here are many hikes to choose from in Ventura County. Too many to count, but here are three day hikes in extremely diverse locales that will leave you completely caked in trail dust, yet utterly satisfied.

Sandstone Peak, Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area Difficulty: Moderate Distance: 6 miles round trip

Calling all rock hounds — This high point of the coastal Santa

Monica Mountains is your dream escape from Ventura County’s urban jungle. Hiking the Mishe Mokwa Trail to the summit (once a 10,000-foot volcano) delivers a peek into Sandstone’s 16 millionyear history. You’ll pass layer upon layer of sedimentary rock and marine deposits of limestone, chalk, dolostone, conglomerate, breccias and shale. You can’t miss them — lots of knobby handholds caked in multi-colored lichen. Bonus: sweeping views of five coastal Channel Islands from the 3,111-foot mountaintop. Scorpion Anchorage to Yellow Banks, Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park Difficulty: Strenuous Distance: 10 miles round trip

Explore a 19th century island ranch, watch for island fauna and explore cave-pocked canyons and a secluded beach on this trek along the southeast edge of the largest of California’s Channel Islands. After leaping from an Island Packers boat at Scorpion

Anchorage, head southeast on the old ranch road to Smugglers Cove. After ascending to a windswept plateau, keep Anacapa Island on your left. Bear left and straight at the next sign, then descend past the olive tree orchard into Smuggs. From there, head west past the old ranch house, across a dry creekbed to another old ranch road. Follow it to the next cove, a deserted beach strewn with driftwood and tattered fishing gear, and reward yourself by cooling in the breathtaking turquoise-blue water. Bonus: Keep an eye out for native island foxes. After nearly going extinct, they’re bounding Continued on Page 8

Keeping the kids happy this summer

Go out and

play

I

by Joan Trossman Bien

f you are looking for a memorable day somewhere in Ventura County this summer, there are a few inexpensive places for hands-on experiences, especially for the younger children. Kids like animals, and whatever type of animal they want to get up close and personal with, you have a choice. If it is farm animals they enjoy watching and feeding, take a swing by the Underwood Farms in Moorpark any day of the week. If exotic animals are more up your alley, the Exotic Animal Training Management program at Moorpark College puts on live shows every weekend, several times a day. And, if older kids are looking for fun, there is the spectacular Air Show 2009 at the Camarillo Airport at the end of August. Children can even go up in a plane before or after the show. So go out and have some fun with your kids this summer!

Underwood Farms in Moorpark This pick-your-own farm has been a longtime farm experience destination for the city folk, but it is just as much fun for locals. In season now through June: strawberries, blackberries, apricots and all types of salad vegetables. July through October: cucumbers, squash, Valencia oranges, green beans, raspberries, black-eyed peas, heirloom and beefsteak tomatoes, peppers, chilis and Roma tomatoes. October and November: gourds and pumpkins. There is a farm animal center on the premises with animals the kids can feed and watch. It has what you would find on a typical farm: goats, ducks, chickens, sheep, cows, rabbits and a couple of emus. The Animal center also has train rides, wagon rides, Moon Bounce, mining for gems, and an animal show on the weekends. A farm camp will be held for the younger children weekly this summer, where they can learn about the crops and the animals, culminating in an animal show for the parents. Open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission: Weekdays $3 Weekends $5 Address: 3370 Sunset Valley Road, Moorpark Contact: 529-3690

Youngsters can enjoy pony rides at Underwood Farms in Moorpark.

Exotic animal show at Moorpark College The Exotic Animal Show features different animals and each show lasts about 20 minutes. The public is free to wander the zoo area. There are currently 150 animals. The Exotic Animal Training Management (EATM) is a training program geared Continued on Page 14

The Lavender Inn in Ojai makes guests feel like they are in an exotic getaway.

Save money and take a staycation this summer by Alex Wilson

P

eople searching for ways to stretch their summer vacation dollars are finding that Ventura County’s varied attractions and unique accommodations make it a perfect place for a staycation. There are campgrounds featuring ocean views and nearby lakes, as well as mountainous pine-covered wilderness areas suitable for backpacking trips. Locals looking for a more luxurious camping experience are trying the Ventura Beach R.V. Resort, which offers a general store, bike rentals and a swim-

16 —

ming pool. Park Manager Gracie Willoughby says about 80 percent of her customers travel less than 100 miles. “They don’t have to waste all the money and gas, but they’re not at home,” says Willoughby. “They get to go to the beach, they can go hiking in the mountains since we’re still close by, they do the bike rides, but they don’t really have to travel far away to do it.” Willoughby says her guests escape their everyday reality. “They feel like they are away from home because they didn’t bring the worries, they didn’t bring the work,” says Willoughby. “They say, ‘For that short weekend, I’m away

— Summer Guide — 2009

from everything.’ ” Campers also save money by cooking out. “They’re not spending all the money going out to dinner because now they’re barbecuing at a fire pit. You get to be with the whole family but you’re not spending $100 for a dinner,” says Willoughby. The Lake Casitas and Lake Piru Recreation areas are also good options for easy camping trips and boating. An elaborate water park at Casitas adds to the vacation vibe, and there’s a disc golf course, too. Several local bed and breakfast establishments also make visitors feel far away or transported into the past without leaving the county.

Piru’s Heritage Valley Inn was built back in 1890. It’s near Ventura County’s only National Historic Landmark, Rancho Camulos. The Rancho partly inspired the hugely popular 1884 book Ramona, and when a 1910 movie version was made, the hotel played host to stars like Mary Pickford. Early California tourists flocked to see the fictional home of Ramona. Ventura’s Bella Maggiore Inn feels a bit like traveling to the sunny Mediterranean coast. A front-desk clerk said they frequently serve parents who live in Ventura looking for a romantic night away from their kids. Continued on Page 18

Where to find the farm-freshest

summer goodies Stories and photos by

by J.R. Grant jrgrantfoodie@gmail.com

W

hen it comes to good summertime dining in Ventura County, I have to admit my restaurant taste buds begin taking a backseat. Summer is the time of hikes, beach walks, fairs and backyard and garden parties. And it is the time of picnics, barbecues and potlucks. However, there is one absolute must for me when it comes to anticipation and salivating taste buds. What this one culinary treat

is and where it can be found will be revealed a little farther along in this article. In the meantime, I want to briefly give some ideas for your own picnics, or places for your potluck ingredients. For the best in summer goodies, I can’t help but think of the amazing treats found in our local Farmer’s Markets. While I visit several of these markets weekly, I also still like the oldfashioned produce stands found in many farm areas of the county. One of my favorites is Ralph’s Garden Fresh Produce, 18909 E. Telegraph, just east of Santa Paula on the way toward Fillmore. While most stands carry abso-

lutely farm fresh produce Ralph’s always has the first and last local asparagus, lots of miniature veggies and blossoms, perfect (and early) white corn and a full line of local jarred olives, jams, nuts, and whatever the local farmers offer on any given day. If Ventura is your home, you can find a terrific assortment at Trace Ornelaz’s Pierpont Produce, 1038 S. Seaward, corner of Seaward Avenue and Pierpont Boulevard. Not only does Ornelaz’s always have the most perfect artichokes and lots of exotic local offerings, she also has unusual jams and specialties found nowhere else. You will be phenomenally happy when you taste her banana jam. Sounds odd, I know, but your taste buds will crave this delight immediately after savoring it for the first time. By the middle of the summer you can get everything you need for a superb picnic at the Upper Ojai Market (12679 Ojai Santa Paula Road, Ojai 525-4344).

By then, owner Jeffray Frahen and his family hope to have a classic 1950s station wagon available for rental for that extra-special picnic; he is even planning a horsedrawn carriage for that old-fashioned country outing. All of that is for you to explore. For me, I’ll go down the road from that market to have the most perfect taste sensation of the summer in Ventura County: Dan and Karen Beasley’s Summit (12689 Ojai-Santa Paula Road, Upper Ojai 933-9898) looks like any other remote hamburger stand, which it is. Great fries, great burgers, etc. — the usual. But come July when the nearby K. B. Hall apricot ranch begins offering its harvest. The Summit makes an apricot milkshake that is quite possibly as close to nirvana as one can ever find. Whatever it is you want summer to be, it will be unfulfilled unless you have a creamy, juicy, succulent and divine apricot milkshake at The Summit. Happy travels. F
