BRAND NEW YEAR, BRAND NEW CHALLENGE 2009 is over. It has been one of the toughest years ever for the worldwide market. The economic downturn and the credit crunch heavily affected all of us and in particular earth moving machines and attachments.

Nevertheless overall, Simex still achieved an encouraging result by the end of the year; thanks to this the Italian company looks at the future market challenges with a bit of optimism.

The most important event in 2010 will be the Bauma Show in Munich, next April. Simex will be there with a 180 square meters space inside the Pavillion B3, stand B216. All the Simex range will be shown there.

Furthermore: Simex will also have an external demo area, outside the Pavillion C4 (area 406), where visitors will be able to see a crusher bucket working on an excavator. During the exhibition, Simex will officially launch into the worldwide market its latest

product, completely designed within its R&D department: the rotary cutter TF100. This small but efficient attachment, to be fitted on small excavators, can be the ideal partner for small trenching jobs in different working grounds.

Also, the family of the Simex crushers for excavator becomes larger and more complete: the biggest Simex CBE50 will be shown for the very first time in Munich, and also the prototype of the smallest one, the CBE10, will see the light right in those days, to start its tests before becoming an official Simex product.

Soilmec, in line with its past policies, introduces the use of the crowd winch system also on the SR-30. The application incorporates new features present on top of the Soilmec line products in terms of quick LDP / CFA conversion, as well as the innovations introduced on pull down rope tensioning. It is also possible to remove the lower portion of the mast while maintaining the pull down ropes in position, so that it becomes possible to drill diameters that are greater than the below mast centreto-centre distance. A concept transmission in the evaluation EC phase, the Spicer TE-15HX is an electric 204 parallel hybrid featuring a dual power path transmission control system. Targeted for use on material handling vehicles, this system continuously monitors operating conditions and selects the proper combination of diesel and electric power to optimize productivity while reducing fuel consumption, emissions, noise, and engine idling. Dana has adopted a neutral stance toward energy-storage chemistry in the development of the Spicer TE-15HX transmission, allowing it to integrate with many different energy storage solutions. At bauma 2010, Dana will show a system configured with super capacitors that would be used with highly cyclic applications such as front-end loaders, while container handlers and other applications that permit longer duration charging under a light load can be outfitted to work with lead-acid storage and other conventional battery technologies. Whenever possible, the TE-15HX control system disengages the diesel engine and supplies power from the energy storage system for inching and other vehicle operations that require low energy consumption. During idling, it provides power for lights, climate control systems, and other electrical accessories. The Spicer TE-15HX transmission capitalizes on the flexible modular design of the popular Spicer TE-15 electronically modulated transmission to coordinate the operation of the diesel engine and electric device. Comer Industries extends its range of drive gears with rotating outer casing thanks to the new PGRF25000 model, 25,000 daNm nominal torque at output implementing the new output stage on smaller Comer Industries planetary stages. This drive features the typical flange to be connected directly to the fixed support on one side, and the mobile flange, included in the rotating casing, to which a side of the drum is directly secured. The double mobile flange rotation conical roller bearing acts as a winch support. A “Duo-Cone” front seal features between the two flanges. This seals the reduction gear perfectly even in the most difficult environmental conditions. This same drive can be fitted paired with another identical one, acting as a further support and winch mover of double capacity and by itself, thanks to 50,000 static daNm at output, ensures safe operation in emergencies caused by other unit failure. The 4-stage version shown, with total reduction ratio between minimum 143 and maximum 225:1, features movement by means of two hydraulic motors at 180° on input crown gear. Downstream of each motor and before the first reduction stage, is a “negative” oil-bath disc brake - acting as static and EC safety brake - with min braking torque above max motor 071 input torque. The 25000 drive gear by Comer Industries is suitable for mobile crane winches and other winches like those for marine applications. The PGRF25000 end stage can also equip the PGA 25005 traction track drive to form a 5-stage drive gear, with flanged input for hydraulic motor at 90° to the track fastening output flange axis. HIGHER DYNAMICS AT LOWER ENGINE SPEEDS Intelligent integration of hydraulics and diesel engine control retains the dynamics of machine functions even with Tier 4 final engines and enables a fuelsaving reduction of rpm’s without sacrificing overall performance. High dynamic response of the travel drive and implement hydraulics on mobile work equipment even at reduced diesel engine speeds and for Tier 4 final engines: this is the goal Rexroth has achieved with their electronic Bodas system solution called “Diesel Hydraulic Control”. Developed together with the diesel engine specialists from Bosch, the world’s largest automotive supplier, this solution for engine management and as well as drive and working hydraulics reduces diesel fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. With Diesel Hydraulic Control (DHC) Rexroth has teamed with Bosch to develop a new control strategy which retains the accustomed lively response of the travel drive and implement hydraulics even under conditions of diminished load response and lower engine speeds. DHC changes the traditional function sequence and lets the diesel engine know of expected load requirements. This DHC system map represents the vehicle-specific relationships between rpm’s, efficiency and torque. Since DHC means that the diesel engine only provides as much power as the machine actually needs at any given moment, diesel fuel consumption is reduced compared with current figures. Fuel savings of up to 20 percent as measured in real-life testing will reduce the total cost of ownership for operators with no sacrifice in EC dynamic response. “Impressive” is just the right word for the Maxisoil from Mulching Equipment Specialists Seppi M. This machine will be on view at this year’s Bauma Show in Munich. The Maxisoil is a high performing multi-purpose machine: it EC 136 forms and renews roads, will work at depth and crush everything from stones to stumps to roots. The Maxisoil is one of the most powerful machines manufactured by Seppi M. Suitable for use behind tractors with an upper limit of 360 HP on the PTO input shaft, “this is a real high performer when it comes to crushing, stabilizing and mulching”. The machine can be used to crush rock on stony ground, for stabilization of road surfaces and for crushing waste material and rubble on construction sites.

Hot-mix asphalt production accounts for a large part of the challenge facing the road-building profession in the quest for energy savings and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, of which CO2 is one of the main actors. TWO LAYERS OF ASPHALT IN ONE SINGLE PASS Dynapac’s new Compactasphalt® 2500 provides costeffective solutions for placing 2 layers of asphalt in one single pass. Designed to be used with Dynapac’s DF145CS paver, the CM2500 module’s 2.55-meter (8.37 feet) width is ideal for applying the Compactasphalt® method on highways as well as motorways up to 7.5 meters (24 EC feet) wide. The Dynapac machine features an enlarged hopper for 310 binder material with a total capacity of 28 tons. Equipped with its own power unit, the module has a 15-ton hopper for the top layer material. This hopper features two augers, which allow the top layer material to be carried under the electrically heated VB5100TV-E screed. A second screed, Dynapac’s VB805TV Plus-E high compaction screed compacts the binder layer. Both screeds are synchronized in the case of slope and cross-slope changes. Because the Compactasphalt® 2500 simultaneously places both the wearing and binder courses - hot on hot - in a single pass, the result is a better interlocking of the courses that increases the durability of the layers.

A NAVIGATOR FOR THE PILE-DRIVER Orteco, pile-driver for guardrail and photovoltaic post installation machines producer, and Geotop “Control machine” specialist, are the actors of the join-venture aimed to develop Topcon satellite technology on pile drivers. Double advantage: in case of guardrails the optimisation of the work with the definition in real time of exact points in which piling the posts; in case of photovoltaic works the chance to stop the machine once reached the needed height. The “Topcon pile driver GPS system” for Orteco is composed by a palm top Topcon GRS-1, a receiver PGA-1, a tool for radio communication RH-1 Radio modem and a second GPS receiver located on a tripod (HiPer Base Receiver ). The first receiver, installed aligned with the hammer, catches the machine localisation signal and dials with the palm top software, to allow the second receiver to correct the metric error that a “used all alone GPS” normally has.

The error is via radio communicated to the system installed on the machine and it immediately corrects the position, guaranteeing a precision in a range of 1cm. Afterwards the palm top GRS-1 has to be mounted on a truck, in order to detect piling points path, then it defines the overlap between the machine and piling points. Once “uploaded” the information, the tool can go back on the pile driver and the work can start.

EC 037 Fast Verdini presents the Universal Mill Crusher (MGH 500 hydraulic, MTH 500 electrical), a patented machine designed to crush all construction materials including asphalt slabs, equipped with selfcleaning crushers system, protecting them from deposits of soft asphalt. The crusher can crush even hard stones, concrete blocks, reinforced concrete, stones, rubble, reducing them to the size of approx 0 to 4 cm. COLD PLANERS WORKING IN TANDEM Coop Costruzioni, one of the Italian leading contractors in the sector since 1934, in 2009 received a request from the Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi Airport Maintenance Department to repave one of the runway links, the ECO link, and also to repave some sections of the taxiway. Coop Costruzioni decided to use the best machines in its fleet. “It was essential to finish the project on time without any hitches. To be absolutely sure of this we knew we needed two Caterpillar PM200 cold planers; we knew that it delivered what we needed: top

performance and productivity, reliability and the capacity to work long shifts without breaks and without any interruptions”, explained Nicola Guidetti (Coop Costruzioni). “Since we only had one PM200 in our fleet, we immediately contacted CGT, Caterpillar dealer, and asked to hire a second machine for the time needed to complete the works”. In terms of exhibition space, Bauma is the biggest trade fair in the world. The 2010 edition takes place from 19 to 25 April 2010 at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre and to confirm the international showcase for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment is getting even bigger. In response to an excellent level of bookings from exhibitors, Messe München is planning to erect additional, temporary halls for bauma 2010. This will bring the total exhibition space for the fair to 555,000 square metres. By deciding to set up these temporary halls, Messe München will be able to

offer additional exhibition space to the product sections on ‘Formworks and Scaffolding’ and ‘Construction Equipment and Tools’ - both of these being in particularly high demand from exhibitors.

Currently improvements are under way to the entrance situation on the northwest of the site, by building an entrance and registration building between the multi-storey car park on the northwest corner and Hall C1. For the first time, therefore, this will provide an additional, seventh entrance in time for bauma 2010, and that should help alleviate pressure on the very busy West Entrance.

Another area in which improvements are being made is to visitor flow between the open-air sites to the north and south of Paul-Henri-Spaak-Strasse. It has been decided to close this road to traffic during the exhibition to make it even easier for visitors to pass between the two areas. In addition the earth banks which used to be in place along this road have now been levelled, to provide a better visual link between these two parts of the site.
