Moving with heart and soul into the future The philosophy of a family-run company with the art of conglomerates etched in its DNA The year in which the company was founded coincides with the start of production: 1967. Ever since, Iterchimica has never ceased believing in the values that have consistently propelled it towards the future, often preceding it. The starting point is always the idea, which is conceived from research setting the path for development, production, laboratory experiments and onsite testing and finally the launch on the global market. The idea was successful, and showed the way forward.

Precisely the road. The very same road that Iterchimica, as producer of additives to improve pavements, has traversed for almost half a century steered by the following philosophy: to combine research and operational skills to "create", like a work of art, high-technology solutions with the least impact on the environment.

The positive outcomes of this approach, achieved also through continued investments, are for all to see: “Where it was not possible to lay a paved surface,”says the founder, Gabriele Giannattasio, “thanks to our experience, ingenuity and quality standards, we have ultimately been able to do so”. L’idea ha saputo diventare grande e segnare una strada.

Già, la strada. Quella che da quasi mezzo secolo percorre Iterchimica - produttore di additivi per migliorare le pavimentazioni - è permeata da una filosofia: abbinare ricerca ad abilità operativa per “creare”, come se fosse un’arte, soluzioni a elevato contenuto tecnologico e sempre meno dannose per uomini e ambiente.

Come riuscire a catturare l’immagine dell’“anima” della strada, intesa nella sua accezione più moderna? Ovvero quella materia, frutto di ricerca avanzata, capace di costruire legami sempre più solidi tra inerti e bitume, assicurando all’unione lunga e prospera vita, oppure a far sì che la stessa strada si trasformi in una creatura non più nemica, ma decisamente amica dell’ambiente?

Abbiamo provato a farlo con questa monografia, che ha come protagonisti i composti chimici, con le tecnologie che da essi derivano, nonché l’azienda familiare che, da circa 50 anni, li sviluppa, produce e commercializza in tutto il pianeta.

Il volume si propone come un viaggio per immagini nel campo degli additivi, dei materiali bituminosi e delle pavimentazioni stradali, un vero e proprio “album di famiglia” che da un lato offre un’efficace rappresentazione dell’esperienza di un’azienda emblema del Made in Italy dell’alta tecnologia e della qualità, e dall’altro può costituire un utile strumento di lavoro, di rapida consultazione, per i professionisti del settore.

Alla base dell’opera c’è un percorso di quasi mezzo secolo di lavoro serio, proficuo, creativo, continuativo e, nella modesta opinione di chi

scrive, meraviglioso, svolto da un gruppo di uomini e donne con dedizione e professionalità e da un’intera famiglia attiva in azienda già da due generazioni, che ci ha sempre “messo la faccia”. Ovvero ha sempre affrontato con impegno e passione tutte le sfide: dall’impresa, alla ricerca, al cantiere.

Ogni giorno ci confrontiamo con un mercato mondiale altamente competitivo e in continua evoluzione per qualità e quantità, che richiede soluzioni tecniche estremamente variegate e da destinare a ogni angolo di ciascuno dei cinque continenti. È questa, da molto tempo, la nostra dimensione quotidiana.

Senza falsa modestia e con il giusto orgoglio, possiamo dire che le nostre soluzioni e know-how hanno sempre centrato l’obiettivo, senza mai registrare un fallimento. Persino dove non si poteva fare una strada, anche grazie ai prodotti concepiti e nati qui, a Suisio, Bergamo, alla fine siamo sempre riusciti a farla. E soprattutto a farla bene.

Potremmo dire, con l’anima.

Bergamo, Italy, 2014 How does one capture the image of the “spirit” of the road in its most modern sense? Or that of the mix of materials which is the result of advanced research able to create ever stronger bonds between aggregates and bitumen, ensuring their long and succesful union, and capable of transforming the road into a creature that is a friend of the environment and not its enemy?

In this monograph, we have attempted to share this image through the protagonists; the chemical compounds and the technologies derived from them, and of the family business which, for approximately 50 years, has been developing, manufacturing and marketing these products all over the world.

This book is a journey depicted through images of additives and bituminous materials and road surfaces, a true “family album” which succintly represents the experience of a "Made in Italy" company focused on high technology and quality. The book also serves as a useful business instrument or a quick reference manual for professionals working in the industry.

At the foundation of all this lies the journey of nearly half a century of serious, productive, creative, unwavering and, in the humble opinion of this writer,

wonderful work accomplished by a group of fully-dedicated and professional men and women, and two generations of an entire family who vowed to make the success of the company their personal responsibility. A family that has faced every challenge with commitment and passion: from the management of the company, to research and on-site construction.

Every day we are confronted with a highly competitive and ever changing global market that demands quality and quantity, and which requires a wide variety of technical solutions to be delivered to every corner of the five continents in which we operate. For a long time now, this has been our daily activity.

Proclaiming no false modesty, we can proudly say that our solutions and know-how have always achieved their objectives, never failing once. Even where it was established that a road could not be built, thanks to the products conceived and born here in Suisio, Bergamo, in the end we always managed to build. And above all, to build them well. We may also say that we did so with our souls.

Attivanti di adesione Anti-stripping agents Gli attivanti sono sostanze chimiche complesse che, migliorando l’adesione tra bitume e aggregato inerte, evitano sfogliamenti e sgranamenti dei tappeti e aumentano la vita utile delle miscele bituminose, nonché la resistenza all’invecchiamento. Contrastano l’azione disgregante dell’acqua, aumentano la bagnabilità del bitume e la resistenza alle sollecitazioni meccaniche e cicliche. Infine, permettono di prolungare i tempi di stesa e facilitano l’attività di compattazione.

The anti-stripping agents are complex chemical substances that, in improving the adhesion between bitumen and aggregates, prevent the stripping and ginning of the courses, increase the useful life of bituminous mixtures, and increase their resistance to aging.

Furthermore, they counteract the disintegrating effects of water, increase the wettability of the bitumen and its resistance to both mechanical and cyclical stresses. Finally, they allow for prolonged laying timeframes, and facilitate the compaction process.

Rigeneranti - Ringiovanenti Regenerators - Rejuvenators

I rigeneranti-ringiovanenti a caldo, impiegati nei casi di produzione di conglomerati che prevedono l’utilizzo di fresato, modificano la struttura chimica e fisica del bitume invecchiato e riducono la rigidità dei materiali componenti i vari strati di pavimentazione. Migliorano, inoltre, l’adesione inerte-bitume, bagnabilità e lavorabilità.

I rigeneranti-ringiovanenti a freddo si differenziano da quelli a caldo per le modalità di utilizzo. Sono impiegati nel riciclaggio a freddo in situ con emulsione, tecnica, oggi sempre più diffusa, che ha sempre visto Iterchimica protagonista.

Hot regenerators-rejuvenators are used in the production of mixes which foresee the use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), modify the chemical and physical structure of the aged bitumen, and reduce the stiffness of the materials comprising the various pavement layers.

Furthermore, they improve the aggregate-bitumen adhesion, wettability and workability.

Cold regenerators-rejuvenators differ from the hot ones in the method of utilization. They are used, for example, in in-situ cold recycling with emulsions, a technique mastered by Iterchimica and which has become increasingly popular.

Flussanti Flux oils Si tratta di additivi plastificanti che modificano la struttura fisica del bitume abbassandone la viscosità e conferendo al conglomerato una buona lavorabilità, anche a notevole distanza temporale dalla produzione. Vengono impiegati, per esempio, nella realizzazione di conglomerati bituminosi plastici a freddo per le manutenzioni invernali, nonché nella produzione di emulsioni bituminose. Iterchimica ha sviluppato anche una linea di flussanti con componenti di natura esclusivamente vegetale, in linea con le più avanzate politiche industriali di sostenibilità ambientale promosse, in ogni sua azione, dal management aziendale.

They are plasticizing additives that modify the physical structure of the bitumen, lowering the viscosity and giving a good workability to the mix, even after a considerable time has lapsed since production. They are used, for example, in the creation of cold plastic asphalt concretes for winter maintenance as well as in the production of bituminous emulsions.

Iterchimica has also developed a line of flux oils with purely vegetable components, in compliance with the most advanced industrial policies for environmental sustainability which the company fosters in every managerial decision.

Fibre, polimeri, stabilizzanti Fibers, polymers, stabilizers Fibra al microscopio Tra le ultime frontiere, in materia di prodotti chimici funzionali al miglioramento stradale, registriamo il crescente favore degli addetti ai lavori per soluzioni tecniche basate su fibre o polimeri. Le fibre - naturali, minerali o sintetiche - addensano il bitume nelle pavimentazioni di tipo antiskid, drenante o SMA. Congiuntamente ai prodotti, Iterchimica dispone di impianti di dosaggio speciali da offrire in comodato d’uso.

I polimeri Iterchimica sostituiscono l’uso dei bitumi modificati facendo sì che la modifica si possa realizzare direttamente nel mescolatore senza bisogno di cisterne e logistica dedicate. Modificano la struttura fisica del bitume migliorandone le caratteristiche e vengono generalmente impiegati per modificare il bitume utilizzato per la produzione di conglomerati drenanti, semiaperti o chiusi con caratteristiche prestazionali elevate.

Completano questa famiglia di prodotti gli stabilizzanti per bitumi modificati, sviluppati per aumentare la polimerizzazione e la stabilità dell’SBS nelle miscele bitumepolimero.

With recent developments in the field of chemical products for road improvements, we have noticed an increasing demand amongst experts for fiber or polymer-based technical solutions. The fibers - natural, mineral or synthetic - thicken the bitumen in antiskid, draining or SMA pavements. In conjunction with the products we offer, Iterchimica possesses special dosing systems which it makes available for use at no charge to the customer.

The Iterchimica polymers are an alternative to modified bitumen, permitting the modification to be directly inserted into the mix units without the need of tank trucks and dedicated logistical equipment.

They alter the physical structure of the bitumen, improving its characteristics, and are generally used to modify the bitumen used in the production of porous, semi-open or closed mixes with high performance characteristics.

This family of products is completed by stabilizers for modified bitumen, developed to increase the polymerization and stability of SBS in polymer-bitumen mixtures.

Emulsionanti ed emulsioni Emulsifiers and emulsions Gli emulsionanti sono additivi tensioattivi anionici, cationici e non ionici alla base della produzione di emulsioni bituminose tradizionali e speciali impiegate per trattamenti superficiali quali mano d’attacco, impregnazioni, slurry-seal, conglomerati a mono-doppio strato, paste bituminose e tecnologie di riciclaggio a freddo.

L’approccio di Iterchimica, relativamente a questa così come a tutte le altre tipologie di additivo, non si limita alla semplice fornitura di prodotti, ma il servizio tecnico aziendale è in grado di proporre soluzioni, elaborare le formulazioni più adatte, oltre naturalmente a seguire tutti gli step riguardanti produzione, posa in opera e opportuni controlli.

The emulsifiers are surface-active anionic, cationic and non-ionic additives which are at the base of the production of traditional and special bitumen emulsions used for surface treatments such as tack coat, impregnating emulsions, slurry-seal, mono and double layer mixes, bituminous pastes and cold recycling technologies. As far as pavement coloring for aesthetic benefits is concerned, Iterchimica’s catalogue contains both specific products to be used for the accomplishment of hot bituminous mixes colored in their entirety (red) or of cold mixes colored on the surface (all colours), as well as offering products where the coloring effect depends on the use of special resins designed to replace the classic bituminous binders. The so-called clear binders allow us to breathe life into the pavements with the same characteristics of mechanical resistance as the traditional mixes and, at the same time, are of high architectural value. Among the latest discoveries of Iterchimica a special mention must go to the bitumen modifiers called PPS (Polyfunction Polymeric System), which is at the base of a versatile and practical modification process - a startling innovation destined to revolutionize the modification of bitumen in Italy and worldwide. PPS allows companies to obtain specific results as required by the technical specifications for different types of use. The additive PPS comes in pellet format and allows companies to carry out various processes without interrupting the production cycle or changing the type of bitumen. The production is performed by simply using a small dosing machine that is attached to the main unit. This system offers multiple benefits to the pavements: higher carrying capacity, resistance to rutting and temperature change, sound absorption, SMA, as well as the additional benefit of achieving warm asphalt mixtures and recovering the RAP at very high percentage rates. Asfalti drenanti Porous asphalts Una piccola grande rivoluzione tecnica che ha avuto l’Italia tra i protagonisti è quella che, dagli anni ’80, ha introdotto gli asfalti drenanti resi possibili grazie allo sviluppo della tecnologia della modifica del bitume.

Si tratta di pavimentazioni in grado, grazie all’elevata percentuale di vuoti, di drenare l’acqua piovana aumentando la sicurezza.

Il loro campo di applicazione più noto sono le autostrade: la prima lavorazione risale al 1983 sull’A14. A partire dagli anni ’90 i chilometri quadrati eseguiti passarono da migliaia a milioni. Iterchimica, da parte sua, ha realizzato - in collaborazione con varie società autostradali - un additivo (Iterfibra CV) impiegato esclusivamente per questi tappeti.

Porous asphalt was introduced thanks to the development of a breakthrough technique in bitumen modification technology, a technical revolution in which Italy played a major role since the 1980s.

These pavements are capable of draining rainwater due to the high percentage of voids of draining rainwater, thereby increasing road safety. Their most suitable application is on highways: the first application dates back to 1983 on the A14 Italian highway. Since the 1990s, its application drastically increased from mere thousands to millions of square kilometers. Iterchimica has developed - in collaboration with various highway companies - an additive (Iterfibra CV), used exclusively in these asphalts.

Tappeto a ridotta emissione acustica Pavements with reduced acoustic emissions In materia di mitigazione acustica, uno dei principali filoni di ricerca a cui stanno guardando i gestori di infrastrutture è quello delle pavimentazioni eufoniche o antirumore.

Iterchimica, in questo campo, ha sviluppato un additivo ecologico polifunzionale di ultima generazione in grado di abbattere il rumore da traffico in misura significativa (circa 5-6 decibel), che rappresenta la base di un conglomerato fonoassorbente composto, tra l’altro, da prodotti provenienti da materiali di recupero quali copolimeri plastici, granulati di gomma da pneumatici fuori uso, e attivanti di adesione. With regard to noise mitigation, one of the main areas of research that has attracted infrastructure managers’ attention has been euphonious or sound-absorbing pavements.

Hence, Iterchimica has developed a stateof-the-art, multi-purpose ecological additive, capable of significantly reducing the noise of traffic by around 5-6 decibels. It is a noiseabsorption mix composed of, among other things, by-products of recycled materials such as plastic co-polymers, rubber pellets from worn tires, and anti-stripping agents.

L’additivo, in fase di sperimentazione finale, aggiunto sotto forma di polvere nella fase di produzione del conglomerato bituminoso destinato allo strato di usura, si disperde nel film di bitume che avvolge l’inerte, il che rende ottimale la sua azione anche negli asfalti drenanti. La soluzione non contiene cloruri che potrebbero aggredire strutture in calcestruzzo o acciaio, così come nessuna sostanza generalmente dannosa per l’ambiente. Il suo effetto principale: un abbassamento significativo della temperatura di congelamento dell’acqua a contatto con il manto stradale, il che garantisce un lasso temporale maggiore per gli interventi di mezzi spargisale e lame.

This is a state-of-the-art system in the field of anti-freeze products which improves road safety in the winter seasons. The additive, which is undergoing final testing, added in the form of a powder during the production phase of the asphalt concrete intended for the wearing layer, is dispersed in the bitumen film which wraps the aggregate, making its action optimal also in porous asphalts. The solution does not contain chlorides which can impair concrete or steel structures, or any substance harmful to the environment.

Its main purpose is to significantly lower the freezing temperature of water once in contact with the road surface, thereby delaying the immediate need for snow plowing and salting.

L’approfondimento specialistico e l’aggiornamento continuo - in una formula, la “cultura tecnica” - sono da sempre fattori di distinzione per Iterchimica. Certificazioni Certifications CERTIFICAZIONE AMBIENTALE SECONDO NORMA

UNI EN ISO 14001:2004 Iterchimica ha un sistema di gestione della qualità conforme alla norma UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 per le seguenti attività: ricerca e sviluppo di tecnologie per pavimentazioni stradali; produzione e commercializzazione di additivi per bitumi e conglomerati bituminosi; assistenza tecnica e trasferimento di know-how.

L’azienda, inoltre, ha ottenuto il certificato CE del controllo di produzione della fabbrica in conformità alla Direttiva 89/106/CEE per la produzione di emulsioni cationiche bituminose, prodotti sottoposti a Initial Type Test (ITT) e a Factory Production Control (FPC) in conformità alle disposizioni riguardanti l’attestazione del controllo di produzione in fabbrica descritte dalla norma EN 13808:2005.

Le soluzioni Iterchimica, infine, possono essere prodotte anche in conformità alle specifiche americane Superpave, elaborate a partire dal progetto SHRP (non ancora richieste dalle normative europee ma vincolanti in Nord America), grazie alla disponibilità di strumentazioni avanzate di prova in grado di determinare il Performance Grade (PG) dei bitumi stradali.

Iterchimica has a quality management system in place, in accordance with UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 for the following activities: research and development of road paving technologies; production and marketing of additives for bitumen and bituminous mixes; technical assistance and transfer of know-how. Moreover, the company has also obtained the CE certificate for production control within the factory in accordance with Directive 89/106/EEC for the production of cationic bituminous emulsions, products undergoing Initial Type Testing (ITT) and Factory Production Control (FPC) in accordance with the provisions for certification regulations concerning the certificate of factory production control, described by the standard EN 13808:2005.

Iterchimica's solutions can also be produced in accordance with the U.S. specifications Superpave, based on the SHRP project (not yet required by European law but binding in North America), thanks to the availability of advanced test equipment that can determine the Performance Grade (PG) of road bitumen.
