Dear Readers, On behalf of every one at VDU (Virtual Designing Universe), I would like to welcome you to the first edition of “Web Art Gallery”. We thank your for downloading this magazine and reading it. Since this is the first edition we would like to tell you a little more about the plans that go behind the magazine. As fans of great art, the internet provides a much lager range of art work then any one museum has, such web galleries gives us more then our far share or great art to over come our hunger of all artistic forms. Due to the abundance of art online not every one has time to see all great works and the amazing artist behind them. “Web Art Gallery” gives you a chance to see great art and learn about the artist behind them. It is a great way for young artist to be inspired and realize that they have potential. We would like this magazine to spread and become the “Vogue” of the art world. Our goal is to give you a new easy access to the artistic world that we live in. this is an effort by VDU to promote artist that have amazing works, and to inspire others to create great works. For this edition we will be supplying you with 3 interviews with artists of different fields. Or cover story is an interview of NeMAfronSPAiN on Deviantart.com and you will enjoy learning more about this great artist and see some of his great work. We would like if you all can suggest “Web Art Gallery” to all your friends and let them sign up to our mailing list. And if you have any artist you would like to be featured, or any suggestion or ideas for the next issue we would be proud to hear them and work on supplying the for you.

Nope, I a m self taught; I researched a natomy books a nd bu r ied myself i n com ic books.

hat are your tools of the trade?
Wel l, basica l ly I use a “ Pr isma color copy-not non-photo blue” to sketch out the drawing, a normal 2 H penc i l to sketch d raw i n g s t hat w i l l be i n ked. and if I want a ver y clean resu lt a 0,5 2H lead mechpenci l. A lso I use Photoshop to adjust scann i ng, clean t he draw i ng etc.

an you descr ibe your st yle/st yles for the readers who have not seen your work?
Wel l I t h i nk I star ted out prett y car toon, but t han my st yle cha nged a nd got more ser ious as I got i nvolved w it h Mar vel. So I g uess my st yle is Western com ic w it h a smal l touch of cartoon. Let’s say t hat Mad f irst inspired me, t han Carlos Pacheco ... and now I creat i ng my own st yle.

Wel l I must say I don´t go out of Western st yle, Manga doesn’t real ly catch my attent ion, I’ve a lways read superhero com ics and it’s what I most l ike because of t he act ion/angles and so.

o you prefer freelance work or do stick to a specif ic f ir m? W hy?
I would like to stick to a specific firm, Marvel concretely but freelance a lways breaks rout i ne, so I g uess bot h have its pros and cons.

here do you d raw you r i nspi rat ion f rom whenever you start to work on a piece?
m m m , I don’t k now, usu a l ly I just t a ke a sheet of paper and start drawing small sketches. W hen I have a few I just take the one I like most and carr y t hat idea out.

Oh yes, now a days I just love Pacheco and Alex Ross, even though Madureira’s design have a lways fasci nated me.

It’s a lso fast and k now i ng t hat t here are t housands of on l i ne users t hese days makes it even more at t ract ive. It’s a lso a good way to f i nd work , si nce nowadays ha lf t he ed itors scout t he web for penci l lers and so.

hat do you th in k about web ar t ga l ler ies? A re they better then other methods of display ing ar t work? Wel l as I sa id above, I do t h i nk t hey are a qu ick way to get to people, even t hough I wont deny t hat t he qua l it y of an on l i ne i mage isn’t that good as a non-digital one. I also think they may lose a bit of t he enchant ment a persona l ga l ler y g ives.

I st ud ied A n i mat ion and Mu lt i med ia Desig n. It’s basica l ly learn i ng how to make webpages, f lash, i nteract ive CDs, and so... but from a l l I learnt I on ly use my Photoshop k nowledge da i ly.
f you had any tips for people that are just star ting to create ar t wou ld it be?

I wou ld say read a l lot of com ics, or whatever you want to draw. Ded icate A L O T of t i me to it, get i nspi red and pract ice pract ice pract ice. St udy basic anatomy and then exag gerate proport ions! My name is Ceci l ia Gago, cu rrent ly 20 years old, and I was born in a country in South America ca l led Venezuela; and I have been draw i ng for approx i mately 5 years or so now. I do it for fu n and always try to learn more about different ways of i mprov i ng t he f ields I lack.

Apar t from t he art classes schools offer as a reg u lar cred it t hat one must obta i n I have not taken any ot her t y pe of art learn i ng.

hat are your tools of the trade?
My tools of t rade are prett y easy to obta i n. T he t h ings you need are reg u lar ba l l poi nt pens, Copic markers, Prismacolors, wh ite out, watercolors, sharpie markers, and of course an art ist’s best fr iend, Photoshop.

I nspi rat ion l i ke m a ny say comes f rom t he mood we are in at t hat moment when we are creat i ng t he piece. I have to say most of my pieces go t hat way as wel l. My draw i ngs w i l l come out better when I am i n anger for some reason, is as if I have to prove a poi nt so I g ive it my a l l, I know most people say when they feel sad or when t hey are bored is when t hey draw t he most.

hat do you aspi re to ach ieve?
In all honesty I don’t think I will ever make a career out of draw i ng an i me, because I’m not sk i l led enough to ach ieve t he goal of perfect ion. R ight now I do it to get ext ra side money to buy more of t he utensi ls I ment ioned earl ier. I w i l l a lways draw as a hobby.

o before we begin can you please i n t r o d u c e y o u r s e l f ? Te l l u s , w h o you are, and how long have you been creating these wonderful works of ar t? My name is Ci ndy Gr u ndsten. I l ive i n Sweden i n a town ca l led Esk i lst u na. Not so far from t he capital city Stockholm. For three years ago, autumn 2007 I got an old computer from my daughter with an old Photoshop Element. I remember I loved to play w it h t h is prog ram, but I cou ld not any t h i ng about Photoshop or ed it i ng. I wanted to learn a l l t he tools so I joi ned a g roup on i nternet to learn more about it. It was so fu n, and I started to ed it my own photos. I n 2 0 08 I t hought I wa nted to lea r n more so I joi ned Dev ia nt a r t. W hen I saw a l l t he wonderfu l arts I a l most cried. How cou ld anyone possible create such a beaut ifu l ar t? I sad to myself. A nd I decided to learn.

ave you stud ied in any academ ies?
To learn about Photoshop I study on distance once. It was on ly t he basic Photoshop. But it was fu n and helpfu l.

hat are your tools of the trade?
I have Photoshop CS3, and I have a Wacom Intous 3 tablet. I also have a ver y good and strong comput e r w it h a l lot of wor k me mor y so t h at Photoshop ca n r u n good. A nd a f lat screen, 24 i nches.

an you descr ibe your st yle/st yles for the readers who have not seen your work?
My st yle, wel l I am ver y scared to st uck i n t he same st yle. I love to t r y d ifferent st yles. It helps me to keep my i nspi rat ion and i mag i nat ion a l ive. But I love to make fun, romant ic and happy images w it h beaut ifu l colors.

f you can tel l us if there is a project were you involved in? A nd what is it? I have done some CD -covers, a lot of work to models a nd photog rapher for por tfol ios. I have worked on a calendar. But most ly is it project with models and photog raphers.

I t h i n k I prefer f reel a nce work , a nd t hen I a m f r e e t o do d i f fe r e nt t h i n g s a nd d i f fe r e nt projects.

here do you draw your inspiration from whenever you start to work on a piece?
It’s very different actually. Somet imes I just see a photo of a model, an i ma l or maybe a wonderfu l place, and t h i ngs star t to happened i n my head. A nd du r i ng t he t i me I work more and more ideas comes up.

o you have any ar tist in genera l that you look up to?
Oh yes I have for sure. There are so many many wonderfu l ar t ists as I l ike and adm i re. I can’t tel l t he nu mber of it, it’s too many. But t here is one ver y ver y special art ist. And he’s work is so special to me. I can look at his art for hours and it touches my heart so deeply. H is name is JohndeLano. A nd you can f ind his gallery on Deviantart here . hat do you aspire to ach ieve?
Well, actually I love to create art. Create is my l ife. But of cou rse I want to be better and better. A nd t hat is one of my goa ls. My w ish is a lso to become so good t hat I have t he oppor t u n it y to work w it h a l l t he t i me. I t r ied once. A nd star ted up a sma l l busi ness. But it is d iff icu lt because an image takes so long to do. A nd you can not charge t he pr ice t hat wou ld be needed to make a l iv i ng of it. So now I’m just create for my own joy. But of cou rse I st i l l do comm issions.

f you had any tips for people that are just star ting to create ar t what wou ld it be? Some t ips for t hose who wa nt to lea r n how to create d ig ita l i mages. But f i rst ... do you love to create? A re you happy and i nspi red when you create? T hen you have t he basics to become a n accompl ished art ist. Create for your own sake, not for ot hers. Never t r y to i m itate any ot her ar t ist, f i nd you r own st yle. W hat is you. If you joi n an ar t ist, don’t see it as a compet it ion. A l l are at d ifferent levels in their learn ing. And al l are work ing at t hei r own pace. Be a n ice person and suppor t ot her. It is not who are i mportant but qua l it y, so take you r t i me when you create, and feel i nside when it’s f i n ished and when you are pleased w it h you r work. Do not g ive up, pract ice and f i nd solut ions, read t he t utor ia ls. T here are ma ny good t utor ia ls on t he net where you can learn d ifferent techn iques. Do not be af ra id to ask . T here a re a lso m a ny for u ms on t he net t hat you can part icipate i n to bee a good help. This is art; let your imagination run wild. If the neighbor does not like what you do, ignore it. It is YOU who create, and it is YOU who will like what you create. W hen you create somet h i ng you do not l ike, t he result wil l not be good. It is your feel ing when you create t hat determ ines t he outcome and feel ing of t he pict u re.
