BEACHSIDE RESORT WITH NEO-VERNACULAR APPROACH IN KRAKAL COAST, DIY student: abdalla vebriano adrian 21020118130130 lecturer: Masyiana Arifah Alfia Riza, S.T., M. Arch

abstract Geographic, history, and culture become magnetic poles for lokal and foreign tourists visiting the Special Region of Yogyakarta, especially Gunungkidul Regency. The relatively increasing number of tourists every year shows that the natural beauty starts from white-sandy beaches at the lowest altitudes, to mountain views at the highest altitudes; along with cultural aspects ranging from lokal arts to native people's habits are the attractions that are served by Gunungkidul Regency, one of which is the beauty of Krakal Beach. Being one of the leading destinations, this beach has main features such as white sand, main view, and its people. However, problems arise when topic of the discussions is about supporting facilities, in the form of lodging. The availability of lodging on the south coast only relies on the main view to the Indian Ocean without accommodating other aspects such as activities that respond to the environment and user needs, and also the response to lokal culture. The planning and design of the Beachside resort will use a descriptive method with studies of beachside resorts, supported by primary data in the form of direct site observations and also other supporting secondary data such as lokal culture and other supporting aspects, along with the use of Neo-Vernakular as an approach. That way, it is necessary to plan and design a Beachside resort that can respond both in terms of functionality, the needs of users, and the existing lokal wisdom without heeding the lokal community. The use of Neo-Vernakular Approach with the intention of achieving an iconic resort building but still rooted in lokal wisdom, both in terms of the architectural exterior, and the space that accommodates the activities inside. Keywords: Beachside resort, Gunungkidul Regency, Local Wisdom, Neo-Vernakular

beachside resort According to (Kurniasih, 2009), there are several factors that create a resort, including:

Resort is a planned area by providing easy accommodation to tourists and in it not only for overnight stays but also recreational facilities (Gee, Chuck Y., 1988) in (Ghassani & Susanti, 2019). According to (Jennings S. 2004) in (Mustapha & Awang, 2018) Coastlines have become an attraction for tourists and are very important for countries to manage beaches in a sustainable manner. Sandy beaches are one of the elements of natural attraction that makes the rapid development of resorts, especially on beachside resorts around the world.

The use of ornamentation technique Contains communicative elements that are popular/local Awaken historical memories Urban contexts Plural Metaphorics Eclectic Reflect community aspirations The result of participations Represent all

NEO-VERNACULAR

LOCAL WISDOM

IMAGINARY LINE

ACCOMMODATE ALL THE NEEDS

ENVIRONMENT, HUMAN, AND RESORT

In relation to the appearance of the building, Neo-Vernacular approach is applied based on Jogjanese traditional building and then applied metaphorically to create an iconic mass but still rooted in locality of local traditional buildings.

Planning and designing a resort that rooted on local culture, both in terms of arts and local community’s habits. Where the creation of space that can accommodate this potential.

Adopting “Philosophical Axis” concept that connects Mount Merapi of Yogyakarta to the southern sea, into this landscape concept idea. By acting as a liaison between the starting point (entrance) to the end (krakal beach). And also act as a separator between public and private zones.

Resort that can accommodate the basic needs interms of lodging, recreation, and so on. Therefore, the needs of user especially the tourist can be met.

The creation of synergy between the mass of the building with its surrounding community, nature physical features, and also the user (tourists). Thus, each aspect can have a complementary role in this resort.

14

MASS TRANSFORMATION

Stacking the roof provides air circulation in between. Cut the top of the roof top for natural lighting.

The use of Javanese traditional batik motives, which is Batik Kawung as the secondary skin.

Adopt “Saka Guru” as the main construction which represent four (4) cardinal directions.

1 Raise the floor level to differentiate the height between in and outside of the building

Inspired by Wuwungan namely ornaments found in traditional buildings . Metaphoric approach on Wuwungan which shows continuous line from top to the bottom that represent the interaction between human and nature, human and human, and God and human. Where this idea adopts from “The Imaginery Line” that connects Merapi mountain, Tugu Jogja, Alun-Alun, to south sea.

Create four (4) symmetrical sides of the building. And maximizing the aperture and openness in response to public or semi-public zones that also utilise the main view, which is the nature physical features.

WUWUNGAN

ANYAMAN

BATIK KAWUNG

Taking Bangsal Kencono as the precedent for coloumn ornament in this resort.

Inspired by traditional roof ornament, this Wuwungan become one of the approach that speaks Neo-Vernacular. Where the design took inspiration from the indentation of Batik Semen’s motif and ocean waves.

Handicrafts in the form of woven (anyaman) with bamboo and rattan (rotan) as the materials are one of the works of local communities that can be applied to indoor ornaments and also create a unique shades as a chandelier.

Inspired by jogjanese traditional motif, Batik Kawung. Act as secondary skin on the welcoming area, villa/cottage, etc. The gaps that exist can act as privacy and also reducing the amount of heat from outside.
