The pleasure of being opticians - Il piacere di essere ottici

When I stepped into this world, I never imagined that I would have fallen in love with it. Life often takes you to places you never would have thought about going, unknown places you didn’t get prepped for, and presents them to you perfectly wrapped with shiny paperwhat’s going to be inside? Your choice is up to the curiosity of knowing what’s underneath and to the unknowing human courage that will keep the rod straight in any situation. Beneath the golden surface an intricate tangle of challenges, but then you realize along the way what it really means to be an optician....

I often find myself talking with colleagues about the time at the store that is always short, dense and crowded between the myriad of tasks to be done. Each customer we choose to take care of, in response to the trust dictated by his or her choice to cross the threshold of our store, is for us a small world that unravels into a thousand streams. “The cash drawer” to which nowadays too often the activity of an optical store is reduced, in this industry taken by storm, is actually one of the steps, and it happens naturally for an independent optician. We who are living every single facet of this profession firsthand, without intermediaries or those superstructures above our heads to be put over the needs of those who come to us, we start with people’s eyes and try to get through them in all the ways we know best. We have studied and continue to study to get into them, we use our /me to understand what they see, how they see, how much they see, which sharpness, and often even what they “would like to see.”

We live in the desire-necessity to ensure with the devices we can afford the sharpness, visual comfort, focus and accuracy. We get into or at least try to take in the perception of those in front of us and describes it to us in order to preserve or improve it with a pair of glasses, with a contact lens... sometimes with a magnifying glass. We support conveying the images of the world around us into the lives of people by following the path of the light in their eyes. We travel every day in the wonderful world of the eyes that unfolds in the relationship between light, chemistry and biology, and we must know it very well, explore and understand it well enough, ask ourselves questions, seek advice and help from experts in every field to give the necessary assistance. We are bombed every day with a multitude of information and input of all types from technological innovations that spill over into ophthalmic lenses that are increasingly sophisticated and the newest trends in frames, designs, innovative materials, new shapes, new lightweight forms. We learn every day simply by listening to our world, we have our hands so deep in the dough that it is often only the fear of adding more to the daily load that holds us back from certifying our knowledge and experience with a new title, even though we have everything we need in our daily lives to obtain it.

This year in a MIDO that is finally coming back into our lives with its explosive driving force of freshness and innovation, there will be much talk about the figure of the optician and its important and unavoidable relationship with the medical world in contexts where institutions are urged to the needed attention. The hope is always twofold: on the one hand, the social and Institutional context will absorb and fully exploit the full potential of a figure as complex as that of the optician, and on the other that the category will assume the awareness of its role and respects its related rights and duties.

It is truly pleasing to be an optician!

Quando sono entrata in questo mondo non avrei mai immaginato che me ne sarei innamorata.

La vita spesso ti porta in luoghi in cui non avresti mai pensato di andare, luoghi sconosciuti per cui non ti sei preparato e te li presenta perfettamente impacchettati con carta luccicante… cosa ci sarà dentro? La tua scelta dipende dalla curiosità di sapere cosa c’è sotto e l’umano inconsapevole coraggio che terrà dritta la barra in ogni situazione. Sotto la superficie dorata un groviglio intricato di difficoltà, ma poi realizzi strada facendo cosa significa davvero essere ottico… Spesso mi capita di trovarmi a parlare con colleghi di come il tempo in negozio sia sempre poco, denso e centellinato tra le mille cose da fare. Ogni cliente di cui scegliamo di occuparci in risposta alla fiducia dettata dalla sua scelta di varcare la soglia del nostro negozio, è per noi un piccolo mondo che si dipana in mille rivoli. “Il cassetto” a cui oramai troppo spesso in questo settore preso d’assalto si riduce l’attività di un negozio di ottica, è in realtà uno dei passaggi e avviene in maniera naturale per un ottico indipendente. Noi che di questo lavoro viviamo ogni singolo aspetto in prima persona, senza intermediari e sovrastrutture galattiche sopra la testa da anteporre ai bisogni di chi si rivolge a noi, partiamo dagli occhi delle persone e cerchiamo di attraversarli in tutti i modi che conosciamo. Abbiamo studiato e continuiamo a studiare per entrarci dentro, utilizziamo il nostro tempo per capire cosa vedono, come vedono, quanto vedono, con quale definizione e spesso anche che cosa “vogliono vedere”.

Entriamo o almeno tentiamo di entrare nella percezione di chi ci sta di fronte e ce la descrive per preservarla o migliorarla con un occhiale, con una lente a contatto a volte con una lente di ingrandimento.

Supportiamo a convogliare le immagini del mondo che ci circonda nella vita delle persone seguendo il cammino della luce nei loro occhi. Viaggiamo ogni giorno nel meraviglioso mondo degli occhi che si dipana nella relazione tra luce, chimica e biologia e dobbiamo nostro malgrado conoscerlo molto bene, esplorarlo e interpretarlo a sufficienza, farci domande, cercare consiglio e aiuto di esperti di ogni ambito per dare il supporto necessario.

Siamo bombardati ogni giorno da una miriade di informazioni e input di ogni tipo dalle innovazioni tecnologiche che si riversano nelle lenti oftalmiche sempre più sofisticate e le novità in fatto di montature, design, innovativi materiali, nuove forme, nuova leggerezza. Impariamo ogni giorno semplicemente ascoltando il nostro mondo, abbiamo le mani talmente in pasta che spesso è solo la paura di aggiungere altro al carico giornaliero ciò che ci frena dal certificare la nostra conoscenza ed esperienza con un nuovo titolo, pur avendo nella nostra quotidianità tutto ciò che serve per ottenerlo.

Quest’anno in un MIDO che finalmente rientra nelle nostre vite con il suo esplosivo trainante carico di novità e innovazione, si parlerà tanto della figura dell’ottico e delle sue importanti e imprescindibili relazioni con il mondo medico in contesti in cui le istituzioni sono invitate all’attenzione necessaria.

La speranza è sempre duplice: che da un lato il contesto sociale e istituzionale assorba e sfrutti a pieno tutte le potenzialità di una figura così complessa come quella dell’ottico e dall’altro che la categoria assuma la consapevolezza del suo ruolo e ne rispetti diritti e doveri derivanti.
