Thoughts From The Editor Alyssa C

Dear Readers, We have another wonderful Special Edition and this time for Hair Designers. I am totally honored to have three of the best Hair Designers in the industry grace the cover. We have Amanda Cassidy World Hair Champion who has received several medals competing around the country with her beautiful hair creations. This year for 2013 she is competing in Argentina for another medal! If you think that’s amazing we have Thomas Shelton Voted Washingtons DCs top Hair Designer for two years in a row( His work is on our cover) 2011-2012 and is competing for this 2013 slot. His work has been in Style Magazine, Face Magazine, NLM Fashion Magazine and many more, his work is truly amazing. The icing on the cake for this cover is Washington DCs most amazing female Hair Designer Kyndra Turner. She truly amazes me. She is so sought out from people all over for her work, when we chatted she was landing from a trip and within a couple hours she was sending me her work before catching a train home to end the with a super designer working her magic on a client till midnight . This woman is a powerhouse and when you see her amazing work you will see why. I would like to Thank Kennesha Walker of Miwa designs and Graphics for designing our beautiful cover. I know you all will love this issue as much as we do!

Happy Reading! Alyssa C Beauty Editor This issue is for Robin Nicole.

starting what classes would you recommend? To stylists starting out my best advise is find continuing education, advanced color and cutting classes. Give a client great hair color with an amazing cut, they wouldn't dare stray to another stylist . VM: With all the trends out there with Color and Highlights whats your favorite and least favorite? Trends I love : finger waves pin up girl hair trend I hate. The Mullet !!! VM: If you could work with one Celebrity Hair Designer living or deceased who would it be? If I had a chance to work with any celebrity stylist it would be Ann Bray her credits include master stylist , hairstylist of the movie Hunger Games Ann and her Husband Gary Bray were my trainers for the European Hairdressing Championships in 1983 , it was my first international hairstyling competition I had ever been in. The USA was represented. By student team of five members, a professional team ladies female models , and gents male models to represent the USA at the European championships In Sweden USA won the gold in all divisions and I won the silver medal in long hair design. At the age of 19 I didn't appreciate or realize what special gift the Brays had given me till a lot later in life, I said one day I wanted to be on that professional team , and some day I want to be the team trainer well 30 years later and hundreds of trophies and medals I'm proud to say I have been on 6 USA teams in such places as Seoul Korea , Berlin Germany ,Milan Italy , Paris France Athens Greece and in the USA in Chicago I was also selected as USA Team Trainer for the past two World Hairdressing Championships I am a 3 time medalist in the European championships and a 3 time medalist in the World Hairdressing Championships . Being part of that team in 1983 honestly changed my life forever. VM 12

How many years you have been a Licensed Hair Designer? I got my license to do hair in April of 2005, so almost 8 years. But for 3 years prior to that I worked as a shampoo girl and then an apprentice. I have been licensed in both Virginia and Texas. When you started to do hair who did you look up to stylist wise?? When I started doing hair I don't know that I looked up to one particular stylist. I was an apprentice in a Redken salon and so I followed their platform artists closely. For about the past 6 years I have been absolutely facinated with Tearsheet owner and Redken Artist Giovanni Giuntoli. I am so excited to be attending one of his workshops in May. Do you have a favorite Product line and why do you like them so much? I wouldn't say that I have a favorite product line but I definitely have favorite products. My top 3 products would have to be Neuma Styling Mousse, Redken Spray Starch 15, and TiGi BedHead HardHead Hairspray. Neuma Mousse will give even the finest hair texture and body but I think what I love most is the fact that you can use it on dry hair too. It is great for revitalizing your second day hair and because of the texture it gives the hair it provides a great foundation for formal styling. Spray Starch is a heat activated spray that I could not function without. It gives hair an amazing memory whether you are curling or flat ironing. I think I have 2 bottles in my travel kit at all times so that I don't run out. And HardHead is the best finishing spray I have come across. I always ask for style approval before I spray because once I do it is not moving. I have even had girls sleep in their styles and wear it the next day! Do you specialize in anything specific? ( Coloring, Cutting, Perms etc) My specialty is formal styling. I fell in love with braiding and twisting hair as a child and now pride myself on the cleanliness of my styles and the fact that they are done to last through the whole party. What is your absolute favorite service you love to perform on a client? My favorite service to perform on a client other than formal styling is color. I love that it is something that can be relatively easily changed as often as wanted when done with the correct professional products. I have some clients that we never do the same thing twice in a row. What get your creative Juices flowing? Being in a fun and energetic room really gets me going. I think that is why I like weddings so much. Everyone is full of energy and happy and smiling. Besides I get to take them from just rolled out of bed to ready to walk down the isle. It is all about them in that moment. What is your favorite style to cut and why? My favorite style to cut would probably be the stacked swing bob. It lets me be OCD about every move I VM 22

make. My beauty school teachers used to pick on me for having trouble letting go of the perfectionist in me. Do you have a favorite Hair Magazine you love to read? I like to read Behind the Chair. They have a facebook page and I always find myself clicking their links and pictures to read the how to? or what would you do? Students who are in Cosmetology School graduate with the same school kit they started with so what advice would give someone who wants to start finding the right tools ( such as a great pair of shears). There are so many brands out there it may get confusing for someone. I highly recommend going to a show where you can touch and feel everything. It has to be a tool that you are comfortable using and it doesn't always have to be the most expensive out there. It is great to talk to other stylist and find out why they like what they use or if they have something they don't like. For me my curling and flat irons are my go to things. I want them to be sturdy and comfortable in my hand and have the longevity to be on for hours at a time and heat consistently. We in the business know the importance of continuing education in the Salon/ Spa industry but for those just starting what classes would you recommend? I recommend that you go to education yearly. I typically go to one hair show a year and then do local classes and now most companies offer webinars too. What is your favorite Hair Color line to use and why? Redken, it is what I was trained on; I love their education and the end results you get when using their color. With all the trends out there with Color and Highlights what’s your favorite and least favorite? I really like hidden panels of color that peak out from under a layered cut. I probably least like ombre because I see so much that is poorly done walking around. If you could work with one Celebrity Hair Designer living or deceased who would it be? David Stanko, a Redken artist that has always been fun to watch on stage. I can only imagine how he is in the salon.

MH: I like Bumble and bumble styling products because they are wonderful for editorial work and I also like Keracare products when I’m working on multicultural hair. VM: Do you specialize in anything specific? ( Coloring, Cutting, Perms etc) MH: I specialize in Cutting, Coloring, and Chemical services. VM: What is your absolute favorite service you love to perform on a client? MH: A haircut I would say would be my favorite because it can totally transform anyone’s look. VM: What get your creative Juices flowing? MH: I am passionate about fashion, so I always look to the runways and magazines to see what’s new. Color inspires me too. VM: What is your favorite style to cut and why? MH: I like to cut bobs because they are like what the “white blouse” is for fashion…classic. It never goes out of style and you can always punch it up with beautiful color. VM: Do you have a favorite Hair Magazine you love to read? MH: I like to read trade publications like Modern Salon and I also like Sophisticated VM 39

Black Hair magazine. VM: Students who are in Cosmetology School graduate with the same school kit they started with so what advice would give someone who wants to start finding the right tools (such as a great pair of shears)? MH: There are so many brands out there it may get confusing for someone. I would tell them to do research with the major manufacturers, for example if they were looking for a flat iron, they could research FHI, Chi, and Infrashine. Shears is something you have to feel for to determine what you like. I have distributors that always notify of the latest and greatest. VM: We in the business know the importance of continuing education in the Salon/ Spa industry but for those just starting what classes would you recommend? MH: I would advise to take tons of coloring classes, haircutting/ styling classes and business classes because the industry changes rapidly. VM: What is your favorite Hair Color line to use and why? MH: I like Goldwell because the color makes the hair shiny and healthy after the service and for the stylist they have great continuing education. VM: With all the trends out there with Color and Highlights what’s your favorite and least favorite? MH: My favorite is combination of redviolet and copper highlights. Can’t say that there’s a trend I don’t like because to me you can take something from any technique and/or trend and make it your own.

VM: If you could work with one Celebrity Hair Designer living or deceased who would it be? MH: I would have loved to have worked with Vidal Sassoon. Living hair designers would be Carla Ross, Vivienne MacKinder and Patric Bradley

Miguel's Beauty Salon (Freelance) VM: How many years you have been a Licensed Hair Designer? JS: 16 years

VM: When you started to do hair who did you look up to stylist wise? JS: Gabriela Mujica, who was the owner of a hair Salon I worked at in Mexico City VM: Do you have a favorite Product line and why do you like them so much? JS: In cosmetics M.A.C. because it’s of great quality for a great price. The pigmentation of their eye shadows is amazing. In hair products L’Oréal Professionnel Série Expert’ because it is one of the most complete hair care system I have ever seen. Their portfolio of products will cover any hair need. VM: Do you specialize in anything specific? (Coloring, Cutting, Perms etc) JS: I like to think that I am versatile enough to declare that my specialty is enhancing beauty. Rather than specializing in one area of the industry I take on the task of keeping updated with new trends in hairdos, coloring, cutting, and makeup. VM: What is your absolute favorite service you love to perform on a client? JS: Make-overs, because I love watching the expression on their face as they see a new them revealed before them in the mirror. It is amazing how a haircut, new hair color, and some makeup bring out someone’s beauty. VM: What get your creative Juices flowing? JS: Visualization. I visualize my models face, the concept we are working, and my imagination does the rest. VM: What is your favorite style to cut and why? JS: Razor cuts. Razor cuts give you the perfect texturized, soft, and deconstructed finish. Razor cutting can give effects that scissors just can't. My clients love it and request it, especially when they are looking for a modern and stylish hair style VM 43

There are so many brands out there it may get confusing for someone. JS: I would advise them to not fall in the price tag and name brand game. A lot of people assume that because the price tag is higher it will for sure be better, and though that sometimes is true, you can always find a great pair of shears for a great price. The important thing is trying them out and making sure you work comfortably with them, almost as if they were an extension of you. VM: We in the business know the importance of continuing education in the Salon/ Spa industry but for those just starting what classes would you recommend? My favorite for haircutting techniques is Pivot Point; they are just amazing in my opinion. For advance education in hair color, I would recommend Redken

VM: What is your favorite Hair Color line to use and why? JS: Redken because its line is so vast that I am always able to find what I need for every client, regardless of what their needs are.
