Lean Construction in India The concept of Lean Construction was introduced to Indian construction sites for increasing efficiency, productivity, and profit. This is possible only when the non-value adding activities or ‘waste’ is eliminated. Lean construction is the adaptation of the principles of lean manufacturing and it is said to the future of the construction industry both in developing and developed countries. Although the lean construction has started in India, not much-documented information about it is not available. The professionals have already started minimizing ‘waste’ using the lean principles without the knowledge of the term ‘Lean Construction’. However, it is evident that the profit and efficiency of construction projects could be effectively increased using Lean Construction Management principles. Construction in India Both the cultural and historic background of India is old. Through frequent analysis and usage, people in India have discovered many refined methods for the best use of the available resources. As India is a highly populated country, available resources are not enough to meet the demands of the people. This has led to the discovery of methods to avoid ‘Waste’ and use again the faulty items by repairing them instead of avoiding. India is known as the second fastest growing industry in the world and the integral part of the Indian economy is Indian Construction Industry. Construction accounts for nearly 65% of the total investment in infrastructure and is expected to be the biggest beneficiary of the surge in infrastructure investment over the next few years Problems in Indian construction sites There are many problems in the construction industry of India which affects productivity, efficiency, and profit and customer satisfaction. These problems can be easily overcome by lean construction companies. The main causes of the problems are as follows. • Poor or incomplete design and documentation • Change in scope by client during construction • Mistakes during construction • Delays in decision making or in instructions • Poor communication and information dissemination • Poor planning and scheduling • Weather • Poor Labor skills and availability • Disputes • Incorrect material types or quantity Benefits of Implementing Lean There are many benefits for implementing the lean model in construction. The benefits can be divided into two such as Operational improvements and Administrative improvements. Even today most of the organizations apply lean for the operational improvements because they think lean can make improvements only in the operational; side of the business. Nevertheless, Lean’s managerial and strategic benefits are uniformly remarkable. Some of the benefits of Lean are summarized below.
