DO WORRY BE HEALTHY

Preface

During the first semester of the second year of my Fashion & Design study at HKU we had to work on our first big project. The assignment was to choose a theme and design a collection of which one outfit had to be physically produced. This collection book you will give an in-depth view in my design process, and it will speak for who I am as a designer: My inspiration comes from personal experiences which I encounter in my daily life; the inspiration for this project was my father who was on a business trip and sent me pictures of the smog-filled skyline in China. I always translate my personal inspiration to a bigger theme, in this case: air pollution. This way of designing really suits me, because from my point of view the concept is as important as the end result. Therefore my designs should make people think, wonder and evoke a reaction or opinion.

Do worry be healthy is a concept based on the pollution of the air we breathe every day. It is inspired by the smog in China, which is caused by the heavy industry and traffic. Citizens become victims by the indifferent attitude of the government. China belongs to our world too. If we want our world to be one big polluted mess, we should not worry and be happy

imagine waking up and the world isn’t the same

Poor/makeshift suit to criticize the Chinese government’s lack of action considering pollution, making their population, and that of the world, a victim of contaminated air in the process. Also to show that China gives a bad example for the rest of the world and that we all should be aware of the air we breathe. Pure air is precious and valuable and worth to worry about.

10 Cloverfield Lane - Thriller about a woman who is locked up, her captor tells her she can’t go outside, because the air is contaminated and she will die if she goes outside. She creates an escape-suit (complete with gas mask) out of a shower curtain so that her skin and longues aren’t exposed to the contaminated air.

Chemistry - SO2 and CO2 (sulfur-dioxide and carbon-dioxide) are the most prevalent micro-dusts in our planet’s atmosphere. An atom consists of a positively charged core (filled with protons and neutrons), surrounded by a negatively charged electron cloud. In nature, atoms always ‘want’ to form pairs. These pairs of atoms are known as molecules. This happens because atoms exchange negatively charged electrons, making their own charge positive. This makes it so that the atoms are more attracted to each other, and eventually bind to form a molecule. Sulfur-atoms and carbon-atoms that are emitted by the modern industry and infrastructure bind to the oxygen-atoms in the air, contaminating the air in the process.

The suit from ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ was made using a shower curtain, duct tape and other household tools. The same ‘poor’, makeshift quality I will try to incorporate in my own design as a symbol for the attitude towards the industry: economic position above people’s health. The print I have designed looks like a city seen from above, covered by clouds of smog and soot. The plusses and minuses area symbol for the hazardous atoms in the air.
