GLOBAL
VEGFEST December 18th & 19th 2021

E M M A R G O R P EVENT
Welcome
Welcome to Global Vegfest 2! We’re thrilled to be hosting a second Global Vegfest right before the close of 2021, and it’s another exciting line-up of vegan activists, creatives & business folk from all over who are once again taking to the ‘Global Vegfest stage’ to share their insights, experience and educative knowledge to an ever-growing collection of vegans (and aspiring vegans). VIVAS Vegan Women’s Leadership are joining us again, with a long list of speakers and panellists with the fabulous Katrina Fox hosting both a Saturday session and a Sunday session. The VIVAS livestreams will feature talks & panels such as ‘Women Making Waves in Sustainable Fashion’, ‘Careers in Animal Advocacy NonProfits’ & ‘How to Build Online Communities Through Video, and Video as a Tool for Activists’. In a matter of days after Global Vegfest 2 concludes it’s livestreams, Veganuary 2022 begins, and as always it’s set to be the biggest yet. A global campaign itself, Veganuary proves repeatedly that the appetite for veganism & plant-based diets is still there for many, in increasing numbers. The encouragement in most of us that Veganuary provides is a great, uplifting way to start each year, and so for this Global Vegfest we have in part, non-vegans and the plant-based curious in mind - particularly with Benny Malone’s livestream ‘10 Reasons NOT to go Vegan
- and how to reply’ which focuses on common ‘arguments’ against veganism, and how these are often a mix of myths to be busted, and common distraction techniques. We’ll also be hearing more from the good people over at Plant Based Health Professionals UK, who’s members will be conducting multiple talks over the weekend. Rohini Bajekal will be introducing us to vegans who are thriving on their long-term vegan lifestyles with the panel ‘Vegan For Life: Real Life Stories of Healthy Vegans’. Then expanding on this theme, Rohini’s panel will be followed by Dr Leila Dehghan’s talk entitled ‘Vegan For Life: How To Thrive on a Vegan Diet’. We will also be hearing from a collection of vegan activists from Ghana, Uganda & Kenya in the panel aptly named ‘Vegans in Africa’, where they will share with us their actions, experiences, observations and expectations of the future. In addition to all of this, we can’t forget the VegfestUK Awards 2021, which have been voted on in the first two weeks of this month. The results are in and we’re very excited on Day 1 of this event, to be able to reveal the winners of the VegfestUK Awards for another year! So be sure to tune in at 6pm UK time to find out who the ‘favourites’ are for 2021 with this exciting livestream, after which the results will be published online.

About this panel: This panel hosted by Nutritionist Rohini Bajekal from Plant-Based Health Professionals UK will highlight the real life stories of healthy vegans. You’ll hear from VegFest Founder Tim Barford as well as PBHP members including vegan chef Nishma Shah, activist Annie Leymaries and health coach Annette Henry. We’ll explore the benefits of a healthy vegan diet as well as the tips to sustain this lifestyle from those who have been doing it for years and in some cases - decades.
Panellists:
Saturday 12:00 GMT
About Rohini Rohini Bajekal is a nutritionist (MA Oxon, MSc Nutrition and Food Sciences, Dip IBLM) and a BoardCertified Lifestyle Medicine Professional. She provides 1-1 evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle advice to her clients. Rohini is Communications Lead at Plant-Based Health Professionals UK, an organisation providing education around the benefits of plantbased diets.
Annette Henry
I have been fully plant-based for 4 years following a long journey from giving up dairy about 20 years ago for health reasons (recurring endometriosis) through to shifting from a plant strong diet, to a wholefood fully plant-based diet. This final shift involved switching from a high raw, high fat, low fruit diet to one that includes much more fruit and no overt fat sources, again the change was prompted by a health challenge - post viral chronic fatigue. I am now a wholefood vegan.
9 Nishma Shah Hi, I’m Nishma. I became vegan around 22 years ago for ethical reasons. Prior to that, I was a no-cheese lacto-vegetarian, living in Kenya. My cultural background is Jain – originally from India. Core to Jain dharma is the universal principle of ahimsa, i.e., to practise compassion (and non-violence) towards other living beings. The vegan lifestyle clearly aligns very well with ahimsa.
Tim Barford Tim went pretty much plant based in 1980 aged 17, as an act of political rebellion, before turning vegan in 1984, eating a wholefood plant based diet ever since. Stress related health challenges last year have led to a fresh approach to health & nutrition and Tim explains some of the changes he has made to diet and lifestyle to achieve optimum health.
Annie Leymarie In 1984, whilst working in Ethiopia (for the International Livestock Centre for Africa), I decided with two colleagues to adopt a vegan diet – for both environmental and health reasons. Ethiopia’s long tradition of vegan cuisine made it easy. I went on to work in Kenya, India and Nepal before returning to England, maintaining a whole food plant-based diet.

My name is Rachel Kabue, founder, The Vegan Society of Kenya. I became vegetarian in 2011, after visiting India for a yoga teacher training course. While looking for vegetarian recipes online, I stumbled upon veganism, and this was the first time hearing about the lifestyle. It resonated with me and I embraced the lifestyle in 2012. I started outreach and animal rights activism in 2013. After seven years of informal outreach, I finally registered the Vegan Society of Kenya in February of 2020.
Kyobe Ashiraf
I formed up a Corporate team aiming for networking and social cooperation with other people in the community as a leader. Being a vegan lifestyler, many of my friends adopted to and later suggested to make our team – a team of vegans – and to start using football as the method of raising awareness about Veganism and it has made much impact, with positive results.
