OLYMPIA RETURNS! THE thrilling news that VegfestUK London returns to Olympia on November 12th 13th 2022 for the UK’s biggest indoor exhibition of all things vegan was announced at Global Vegfest 2 just before Christmas 2021 after what will be an absence of 3 years by the time the gates open for a return to live events post-COVID once again. The event website london.vegfest.co.uk will be ‘live’ from April 1st. Expect up to 400 traders with the latest in plantbased products as well as a number of animal charities, campaign groups, authors, speakers & entertainers. And let’s not forget visitors - up to 20,000 potentially over the weekend - although organisers are advertising more like 10–12,000, what with the potential spectre of COVID still hovering.

At the centre of the event, in the prestigious (and currently redeveloping) Grand exhibition hall at Olympia, is the Art of Compassion Project Art Exhibition, featuring vegan artists from across the globe, plus some of the history of the vegan movement and a number of animal sanctuaries and campaigns groups.

Pictured: A packed Auditorium at VegfestUK London 2017.

“At the heart of the vegan movement lies the animals. In and amongst the plethora of plant-based products and a steadily increasing influence of the ‘multinationals’ moving in on what was traditionally ‘independent’ ground, it’s important to keep the focus on the animals, whilst still reflecting the growth of plant-based products. VegfestUK London Olympia does just that’’ claim the organisers confidently. Tickets are on sale in the autumn and the website is live for bookings in April 2022 – see www.vegfest.co.uk for updates. Exhibitors can register their interest here.

SETTING WORLD RECORDS ON A PLANT-BASED DIET

Saturday 12:00 GMT

Join Dr Leila Dehghan as she talks to the plant-based athlete Kate Strong about her journey to set a new world record. Kate will share with us her challenges, diet tips and future plans.

Kate Strong My name is Kate Strong and I don’t believe in living a ‘comfortable’ life. Life doesn’t happen when we play it safe, sitting in our comfort zones. We need to commit to something new (& quite often unknown and perceived as scary) to create a different future from what is predictably & inevitably going to happen without change. Whether it’s personal, corporate or climate change, I am doing my best to create progressive and positive impact while recognising that success requires time, patience, consistency and a commitment to the reason why I started on this journey in the first place.

A VEGAN DIET AND WOMEN’S HEALTH

Saturday 12:45 GMT

15

Every aspect of women’s health at every age and stage of life benefits from healthy plant-based nutrition and lifestyle changes (sleep, stress, alcohol, exercise, social interactions). This is true for painful and heavy periods as well as irregular menstrual cycles, often seen in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), the most common endocrine condition worldwide, affecting at least 1 in 10 reproductive age women and those assigned female at birth (AFAB). Making positive behaviour and lifestyle changes especially through nutrition and exercise can go a very long way in managing PCOS and its symptoms, both in the short term and longer term.

Dr Nitu Bajekal Dr Nitu Bajekal, MD is a Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in the UK with over 35 years of clinical experience in women’s health. She is a Fellow of the Royal College and one of the first board-certified Lifestyle Medicine Physicians in the UK. She has written the women’s health module for the first UK University based plant based nutrition course. Dr Bajekal is the co-author of Living PCOS Free along with her daughter and nutritionist, Rohini Bajekal.

BUILDING A RIGHTS-BASED MOVEMENT: Defining Veganism

Saturday 16:30 GMT

About this panel: Roger Yates and Benny Malone take an in-depth look at the definition of veganism, hosted by Tim Barford. Roger looks at the history of the vegan social movement in the UK and the emergence of a vegan definition through the 1940s to the 1970s and its development up to the modern day, before Benny examines line drawing and gatekeeping around the definition of veganism, a look at ‘categorical value’ vs ‘numerical value’ distinction, and how the definition has broadened to what we now recognise as a pro-intersectional radical justice & rights-based vegan position, before a wider discussion on why the definition is important, what can serve to undermine this, and how we can help build a truly rights-based movement around the definition of veganism.

BUILDING A RIGHTS-BASED MOVEMENT: Veganism & Non-violence

Saturday 19:30 GMT

About this panel: Gary Francione and Philip Murphy join Tim Barford for an informed discussion around the theme of ‘Veganism & NonViolence’, including references to the recent Kurt Zouma/cat case, how the vegan social movement in the UK evolved from previous traditions of non-violence towards the end of the 2nd World War, the broader vision of veganism, the current violence in Ukraine, the moral value of sentient beings, how our focus on welfare violates the rights of these individuals, and how violence and rights violations work together. And then the question at the end - how does all this translate into the modern day animal rights movement.
