Gratitude. 2021 has been an exceptional year in many respects – and not least the sometimes overwhelming challenges we have all faced. And although the latter half of 2021 has seen some return to life as we once knew, recent events have cast a long shadow over many of us, with many facing yet more uncertainty in the months ahead. So step forward all those that have battled to stay afloat, kept their businesses alive, continued to campaign for animals, grown, evolved and matured, created, succeeded and used the current climate to motivate themselves further to achieve yet more in the world of all things vegan and plant based, and take a bow people. These awards especially reflect those achievements. Recent events at COP26 have highlighted once more the need for grassroots independent vegan and plant based people, products, publications, projects and campaigns, with governments from across the globe shunning the science when it comes to climate change and livestock farming. Now more than ever have we need a strong global vegan collective, collaborations and supportive actions, community led initi-

atives and genuine people power. If you’re a part of this, you’re a part of the solution. And an extended thankyou for everyone we haven’t included in this awards – all the wonderful people across the globe fighting for animal liberation, climate justice and human rights, and barely if ever thanked or recognised even. These awards are for you in spirit if not in presence. And thankyou everyone voting in the awards this year – thankyou for taking a stand for animals, for people and for the planet in your daily lives, and thanks for voting too! To all those nominated - good luck - you deserve recognition for your achievements in the pursuit of a vegan world and we thankyou for your commitment. But a special thankyou goes to those who have supported and enabled us to, for now, continue to produce these awards, as well as the vegan resources we will continue to work on until we can bring live events back again for VegfestUK. Respect.

NOT MADE FOR VEGANS MADE FOR THE PLANET So be you a fan of dark, smooth and velvety, if dreamily creamy is your thing, or if you’re just crazy for caramelly crunchy, we’ve created something to tantalise your type of taste bud.

We had a dream that chocolate could be made a whole lot better. Better for the body. Better for the planet. Better for our suppliers. But most important of all – better tasting. So we made that dream come true. We reinvented the recipe; cutting out dairy, refined sugars and palm oil. We reimagined the supply chain too; paying fair prices for great ingredients that don’t come with hefty carbon footprints. We even rethought the packaging – ours is plastic free.

We didn’t set out to make delicious chocolate for vegans. We set out to make delicious, sustainable, healthier chocolate for chocolate lovers (and that’s pretty much everyone on the planet).

Take a bite and you’ll realise why we’re most proud of the bars themselves. Mouth-watering natural ingredients like Peruvian cacao, coconut blossom sugar and whole roasted hazelnuts all play their part. As do superfruits like zesty baobabs and caramel tasting lucumas.

Favourite Vegan Book The Nominees This year has seen a truly exciting array of vegan and plant-based book releases, from fiction, to cookbooks, guides and beyond. As always it’s very difficult to narrow down the nominees to a mere 10 per category so we’ve decided to make two! So here are our selections for ‘Best Vegan Book’ for 2021.

‘The Vegan Guide’

‘Brotha Vegan’

Alex Bourke

Omowale Adewale (editor)

The Vegan Guide covers everything you need to embrace the world’s fastest growing way of life. It covers all the issues including why vegan, the latest nutrition information (older books will be out of date on vitamin B12 in particular), cooking techniques, and for the first time in the UK the psychology of discussing veganism.

Brotha Vegan unpacks the lived experience of black men on veganism, fatherhood, politics, sexuality, gender, health, popular culture, spirituality, food, animal advocacy, the environment, and the many ways that veganism is lived and expressed within the Black community in the United States. Edited by Omowale Adewale—founder of Black Vegfest.

‘How To Argue With Vegans’

‘Why Veganism Matters’

Benny Malone How To Argue With Vegans examines the most common talking points that arise when veganism is discussed. The book progresses through the initial reactions and not wanting to seriously engage on the subject to those arguments which are more pertinent but ultimately not valid justifications for exploiting animals. 18

VOTE NOW!

Gary L. Francione Most people care about animals, but only a tiny fraction are vegan. The rest often think of veganism as an extreme position. They certainly do not believe that they have a moral obligation to become vegan. Why Veganism Matters presents the case for the personhood of nonhuman animals and for veganism.

‘Vegan Voices’

‘Think Like A Vegan’

Joanne Kong (editor)

Emilia A. Leese & Eva J. Charalambides

Why should one go vegan? Is veganism the positive change the world needs? Vegan Voices: Essays by Inspiring Changemakersis a comprehensive collection of compelling testimonials of how our food choices are deeply connected to the pressing challenges and issues of our time.

Through a personal and often irreverent lens the book explores applying vegan ethics to our daily lives. It examines contemporary topics related to animal use: from basics of vegan logic to politics, economics, love and practical scenarios helping readers think about animal ethics.

‘Manifesto’

‘Animals in Irish Society’

Dale Vince

Dr. Corey Lee Wrenn

Dale Vince never intended to start a business. Driven by a passion for sustainability, he left school aged 15 and became a New Age traveller, living for free in a wind-powered double decker bus. But after building his first wind turbine, he realised that to change the world he needed to be on the grid, not off it.

Animals in Irish Society is the first book to explore the vegan Irish epistemology, one that can be traced along its history of animism, agrarianism, ascendency, adaptation, and activism. This book contributes to the growing field of postcolonial Critical Animal Studies by applying theories vegan feminism and vegan socialism to the Irish context.

It Was In Our Hands (The ‘Liberation’ Trilogy) M. C. Ronen

‘Ethical Vegan’

It Was In Our Hands (by M. C Ronen) is the third and final book of ‘The Liberation Trilogy’. A rewarding climax to this breath-taking dystopian suspense series, with its clear vegan/ animal rights message. Like its two page-turners prequels, this one is also sure to keep you at the edge of your seat.

Originally from Catalonia, but resident in the UK for several decades, Jordi Casamitjana is a vegan zoologist specialising in animal behaviour, and author of the book “Ethical Vegan: a personal and political journey to change the world”. He is known for having secured the legal protection of all UK ethical vegans from discrimination in the UK.

As rates of chronic disease continue to rise, ‘What should we eat?’ has become one of the most important questions of the 21st century. With plant-based ingredients picked specifically for their nutritional benefits, each tub of Fravocado is packed full of goodness and by using agave syrup as a sweetener it means the sugar content is kept much lower than comparable ice creams.

It’s time to hang up the milking gloves and leave those teats alone! Our indulgent soft serve ice cream blended from almonds and cashews is naturally thick, rich and outrageously creamy—just like the best ice cream should be. Ciao milk!

Blue Skies

Booja Booja

Made with FRESH coconuts, straight from the tree, we avoid allergens to craft creamy, delicious ice cream suitable for nearly everyone. We work closely with local grower communities to ensure we keep value at source, support their future and invest in local projects through the Blue Skies Foundation.

Delicious, multi award-winning BoojaBooja ice cream, in eight scrumptious flavours. All vegan and organic, as well as dairy-free, gluten-free and soya-free: and all made without refined sugar (apart from a bit in the honeycomb which we haven’t figured how to make without). Made with cashew nuts and sweetened with agave or coconut syrup. 33

Favourite Animal Sanctuary The Nominees I think we can all agree that animal sanctuaries are truly inspiring places. Looking after and providing a safe haven for animals in need is the be-all and end-all in the current modern world in which we live. This category is not so much about our ‘favourites’, but more about thanking these organisations by hopefully raising their profile, as well as hopefully funds.

Hugletts Wood

Tower Hill Stables

HUGLETTS WOOD FARM ANIMAL SANCTUARY provides sanctuary to cows and their friends. It provides a home for life to farm animals and birds, rescued from the misery of the meat and dairy industry and the horrors of the slaughterhouse. Hugletts is the only farm animal sanctuary in the UK that operates a dedicated cow protection programme.

The sanctuary has just grown to over 600 animals spanning across 6 yards. Whether they be retired race horses, ex-fighting dogs, or neglected and abused farm animals, they all are given love, respect, medical care and a peaceful place to live at THS. We wouldn’t be able to help so many animals without your continued support. Thank you for standing with us.

FRIEND

Dean Farm Trust

FRIEND Farm Animal Sanctuary is run with an ethical vegan philosophy of education about animal welfare and the need for a world of compassion to all its inhabitants, fauna and flora alike. As well as educating visitors about the animals, we are working to make the sanctuary an example of ecological sustainability, for example planting native trees, rewilding and growing food.

Dean Farm Trust is a local charity with an animal sanctuary just outside Chepstow. Rescued animals including Miniature Shetland ponies, Exmoor ponies, donkeys, pigs, sheep and ex-battery hens are all given a home for life.

Hillside

Farplace

Hillside Animal Sanctuary was founded in 1995 to help and campaign for animals in need and most importantly, to bring public awareness to the millions of animals suffering every day in the intensive factory farming industry. Although at Hillside we have given sanctuary to 2500 horses, ponies and donkeys, many of our residents have been rescued from the farming industry.

We started small in 2002 taking in animals at our Farplace home in beautiful Weardale. We registered as a charity in 2008 as a charity and, since them, we have grown over the years, so we now have an animal care team of 3 full time staff, extensive vet costs, land purchase of woodland and fields that are used for both wildlife habitat creation and horse rescue.

Fleecehaven

Hopefield

Fleecehaven, a small family run charity based in North Devon, specialises in rescuing sheep, many from slaughter. It is run selflessly by Emma, who is profoundly deaf, and her Mum, Anne. They provide lifelong love and care to all who are rescued, whilst also raising awareness about these wonderful sentient beings.

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary provides a forever home to 500+ animals who’ve been saved from lives of abuse, neglect, or were simply unwanted. From horses, pigs, cows, and sheep, to more exotic animals like marmosets, reindeer, raccoons and parrots, we help every animal that we can, and provide them with a safe, loving home for the rest of their lives, free from harm.

Freshfields

Freshfields Animal Rescue is a community focussed non-profit making charitable organisation caring for abandoned, abused and unwanted domestic and small farm animals along with sick and injured wildlife.

Holly Hedge Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary was first registered as a charity in 1982 and was known as ‘Animal Concern’ it was run by Pauline Leeson (our founder) who worked from her own home with the support of foster carers – her aim has always been to provide a safe haven for cats and dogs (and sometimes other small furries) until loving, permanent and responsible new owners can be found. 35

New Roots is the result of Alice & Freddy’s very big dream : crafting a plant-based alternative to cheese. It took a lot of work, intrepidity, and a pinch of craziness, like big dreams do.

At Tyne Chease Ltd we produce a tremendous range of award-winning artisan vegan cheese worthy of inclusion on any cheese board. Made with organic cashews, from our unique flavours such as Ethiopian Spice and Blueberry Oak to classics like Applewood and Garlic we have something for everyone at www. tynechease.com

Food by Sumear

Honestly Tasty

Like dairy cheese, the processes of the Food by Sumear vegan-cheese uses the same principles of dairy cheesemaking science; to use microbes to change the properties of the base ingredients and then use a numbering of techniques to produce a wide array of flavours and textures.

Honestly Tasty, a plant based food start-up in Haringey, was founded by Mike when his veganism came up against his love for cheese. After months of experimenting, Mike landed on a winner, Veganzola (now known affectionately, as ‘Blue’). At that point, Mike closed the door on corporate banking and founded Honestly Tasty.

Strictly Roots Vegan Strictly Roots Vegan is a small artisan vegan cheese company based in London aiming to create a delicious range of vegan cheese made with natural ingredients free from flour fillers and preservatives all in plastic free packaging.
