A LETTER FROM

THE FOUNDER Welcome to

VegOut’s annual awards issue!

From “Vegan Restaurant of the Year” and “Chef of the Year” to “Most Sustainable Restaurant” and “Vegan Chain Taking Over the World,” you’ll find our winners and nominees throughout this issue. Going plant-based is one of the most significant ways you can positively impact climate change. That’s why for this year’s annual awards, we chose to feature only 100% vegan businesses and add a category specifically for restaurants focused on sustainability. I’d like to celebrate the fact that food is finally becoming a part of the sustainability conversation. Recently, I had the privilege of attending an EnviroVoters event in Los Angeles. The organization works to bring sustainability into the political conversation and to achieve climate justice. For the first time, they featured an all-vegetarian menu—with many vegan options. I was also recently invited to a tasting for an all-vegan restaurant at Disneyland’s California Adventure, a special launch for their Food & Wine Festival. Disney conceptualized the plant-based eatery, in part, to support the company’s sustainability initiative. These are just two examples of brands working to create change. But brands aren’t the only changemakers out there. Many celebs are using their platforms to speak out on the importance of a plant-based lifestyle. We have two special interviews in this issue. The first is influencer, entrepreneur, and America’s Mom, Tabitha Brown. Brown shows up fully in whatever she does. Her authenticity and positivity are just what we need in this world. Her compassion for people is as strong as her compassion for animals. The second is acclaimed artist and activist Leona Lewis. Lewis recently opened her second plant-based coffee shop in LA and continues to dedicate herself to the vegan movement. In addition to awardwinning restaurants and celeb interviews, you’ll also find our regular features throughout. These include Vegans on the Street, Grocery Hauls, Sustainable Apparel Essentials, and more.

HERE, WE HONOR THE BEST OF THE BEST VEGAN RESTAURANTS, POP-UPS, AND CHEFS NATIONWIDE. 8 | VEGOUTMAG.COM

The vegan movement has come a long way. Each year, I see the progress we’ve made toward a more environmentally conscious food system. Congrats to the winners and nominees of this year’s awards!

TABITHA BROWN’S BUSINESS: AN INTERVIEW

Who else scrolls the depths of Tabitha Brown’s TikTok page for vegan recipes,

motivational quotes, and wholesome family content 25/8? The upbeat vegan influencer, actress, TV host, author, and entrepreneur has an infectious energy and spirit that wins over everyone in her path. Over the years, Brown has excelled in her role as America’s Mom with her inspiring books, Emmy-nominated and NAACP Image Award-winning YouTube series for kids— Tab Time, vegan haircare company—Donna’s Recipe, and brand partnerships galore. Most recently, Brown launched a new journal—Seen, Loved and Heard. And, as always, she continues to roll out collections for her Tabitha Brown for Target partnership! We connected with Brown to learn about her vegan lifestyle, family, collaborations, and more. Interview BY Allie Mitchell Photography BY Kimberly Tran

VEGOUTMAG.COM | 13

VegOut (VO): Can you share about the beginnings of your vegan journey? When were you first interested in eating plant-based? What were your thoughts about the first vegan meals you tried? Tabitha Brown (TB): I was sick for a year and seven months—chronic fatigue, chronic headaches, chronic pain. The doctor knew it was something autoimmune attacking my body, they just could not figure it out. I decided to do a 30-day vegan challenge after watching What the Health and within 10 days, a headache I'd had every day for a year and seven months disappeared. I was like, “I know I'm onto something!” After the vegan challenge ended, I was feeling better and decided, “This is gonna be my life. I'm gonna go vegan.” When I first went vegan, I was trying to make sure I didn't feel like I was missing out on something. So I was just trying to veganize all my favorite things, but I was having fun with it. I love getting in the kitchen and exploring [and] was making a lot of things most people enjoy—like tacos, meatloaf, sauté scrambles, and veggies. Fun things that are easy but also delicious make me feel like I'm still eating the same way, just a different option.

VO: After you decided to go vegan, did you quickly introduce your husband and kids to plant-based eating? Or was it a slow transition? TB: We all did the 30-day vegan challenge together and after the 30 days, I was the only one who stuck with it. A year later, my daughter decided to go on her own journey and [went vegan] for three years. Two years later, my husband [went vegan] for two years. My son— who was a little one at the time—never went vegan, but he eats vegan [meals]. I want him to make his own decision. My family still eats tons of vegan stuff because that's how I cook, and they absolutely love it.

VO: What is the vegan scene like in North Carolina, where you grew up? TB: There was no vegan scene when I was growing up in North Carolina. I was vegetarian in high school, and I feel like MorningStar Farms (which used to be my go-to) was the only thing available to me. Or I would go to Burger King and get a Veggie Whopper. That was the vegetarian scene—but absolutely no vegan scene. Now where I'm from in Eden, North Carolina, there are still no vegan restaurants. But in Greensboro (where I lived for five years), the vegan scene is more popular. They have a couple of restaurants. Some of my favorites are Boba House and Mike's Vegan Cookout.

VO: Do you veganize any of your favorite childhood recipes on your TikTok channel? TB: Absolutely! Sloppy Joes, hot dogs, hamburgers, pizzas, mac ‘n’ cheese—all the favorites that are still some of my kids’ and my favorites.

VO: What were your expectations when you first started sharing vegan content on social media? Did you ever imagine being dubbed America’s Mom when you recorded yourself trying Whole Foods’ TTLA in your car? TB: I didn’t have any expectations. I was just doing what God had told me to do. I was sharing my journey and had no idea what was coming. I was a little scared at first. Being dubbed America’s Mom is crazy, because I literally had that on my vision board for years. I wanted to be known as America’s Mom—as an actress, like Phylicia Rashad was on The Cosby Show. I wanted a TV show and wanted people to look at my character like, “Oh this is the mom I always wanted.” I didn’t know they would actually look at me, being myself, and love me enough to want me to be their mom. I feel so blessed by that.

VO: We appreciate how you use your social media platforms to spread awareness for veganism, Black creators, and overall positivity. How do you decide what and when to post? TB: Honey, if it’s not a branded deal like a partnership that I have to post, everything is in the moment and organic. If I’m hungry and decide to cook, I will shoot a video. Especially if it’s a recipe I haven’t shared. When I feel the spirit move inside of me, and I hear a word from God, I record the video. I don’t like staged stuff, it just doesn’t feel right to me. So I like to keep things real and in the moment. I think that’s kind of what separates me from most people.

VO: Who are your favorite Black content creators at the moment? TB: Right now, Keith Lee is one of my favorites even though he is not vegan. But I told him we have to do some vegan content together, and he said yes! I love that he is on a mission to help people and change lives for the better. Now if we could just get him to incorporate some plant-based meals in there—honey, it’ll be a double win! But I absolutely love him, his heart, and his passion for people. Another person is Nick Few. He does all the Eric Mays impressions—he is hilarious! He’s a talented actor and also happens to be one of my best friends. But he’s now on this new venture after leaving his job as a professor teaching acting, and now to see him just jump into it is hilarious and inspiring! He’s also a vegan foodie like me!

VO: What are your must-have vegan food and beauty products from Black-owned brands? TB: Well, of course, for beauty products, I would have to say Donna's Recipe, which is my personal brand. It's my haircare company, focused on implementing natural Ingredients to protect hair and keep it strong and healthy. We have a Sweet Potato Pie collection that is our newest addition. We created desserts for hair because I don't bake, but Donna (my hair) said she could provide sweet treats for hair! [The line is] available at Ulta and just won “Black-Owned Brand of the Year” out of all the brands in Ulta! We are so grateful for that blessing! Other Black-owned brands I love are Brown Girl Jane. They do skincare. They do perfume. It's vegan and absolutely amazing. HoneyMami By Luxe has the best body oils! The Lip Bar has beautiful lip gloss colors, and they feel amazing on the lips. And Black Girl Sunscreen is a vegan sunblock that I love!

Let's see, there are so many Blackowned brands for vegan food: • Vurger Guyz food truck in LA • Everything Legendary burgers • Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat [vegetarian] restaurant in Chicago • Atlas Monroe vegan chicken • Sole’ Pickles—so many different flavors of pickles!

VO: Congrats on the Target collaboration! How did that partnership come about, and what was your favorite part about creating your line? TB: It started as Target Family, doing organic content in partnership with Target in 2020. And it was so successful! Target was just so loving and supportive and let me be me. As time went on, they were like, “Is there anything else you want to do?” And I was like, “I do have a lot of ideas.” So we sat down and came up with this amazing plan. When they offered me four collections throughout the store, I couldn’t believe it. It had never been done before, and I was so honored and grateful that they thought of me. It was a long process but so much fun! The last two years have been mindblowing, but I’m super grateful. My favorite part about creating my line? The clothing and food, of course. I mean, everything was fun, but I studied fashion in college and quit in 1997. I promised my dad that one day I would have a fashion line when I was famous, so this was an extra special moment that I shared with my dad. I am a foodie, and I love to eat. I love to feed people— make food and see people go crazy online, buying [the products] and sharing, especially the okra [and] popcorn … all my favorites. It was a dream come true to be able to share a piece of me with everybody in that way.

VO: What are some of your other favorite partnerships? TB: McCormick Spice is definitely a favorite, as they gave me the opportunity to create my own spices. Goli is one of my favorite partnerships as well—one of the first brands I ever partnered with organically. I’ve had many partnerships, and I’m thankful for them all! You know, there was one time I had a restaurant [in LA]. It wasn't my 100% owned restaurant, but I did partner with Neiman [Golubovic], the owner of the Kale My Name in Chicago, [to open a location in Los Angeles]. And it was so much fun! We just had so many problems with the building, and it just became way too crazy. We were like, “We can't do it.” We just didn't have cooperation from the landlord, but it was still one of my favorite collaborations and partnerships.

VO: Can you give us a glimpse of collabs or product launches you have in store for this year? TB: I’m super excited about my new launch in Target with my haircare line, Donna's Recipe! We will now be in Ulta and Target exclusively, and we are so grateful! Also super excited that my new collection of McCormick spices is hitting shelves in all local grocery stores this summer—Sunshine Seasoning, Like Sweet Like Smoky, Very Good Garlic, Taco Business, Burger Business, and Sauté Business!

VO: 5 million followers on TikTok, three bestselling books, a two-time Emmy-nominated children’s show, and brand partnerships galore! Did you ever imagine when you started that you’d be where you are today?

STYLIST Vannieka Woods / HAIR Shaylin Jones / MAKEUP Brandie N. King

TB: I absolutely did not. Every day, I'm amazed at what God has done in my life. I feel so blessed. I feel so grateful. I knew that I was going to do something big, and I knew that I would be famous one day ever since I was a little girl. I knew that. I had no idea it would come from me being myself. And that's the greatest part of it all. Grateful that I can show up just as me and be blessed the way I am.

HERSHEY’S DEBUTS TWO NEW VEGAN CANDY BARS The chocolate giant joined the vegan movement earlier this year with the release of two new dedicated plant-based items made with oat milk. Customers have been calling for plant-based versions of their favorite classic candy bars for years, and The Hershey's Company answered the call in March when it released Reese’s Plant Based Peanut Butter Cups. A fully veganized version of the classic chocolate cups, the Plant Based Peanut Butter Cups are made with a creamy oat milk chocolate coating over the familiar peanut butter interior. In April, Hershey gave its iconic chocolate bar a vegan twist with the Plant Based Extra Creamy with Almonds and Sea Salt: a creamy chocolate bar made with oat milk, almonds, and sea salt.

VEGAN POACHED EGG LAUNCHES IN US Store-bought vegan eggs have become more accessible over the past couple of years, but finding a vegan egg at a restaurant has been more challenging. Israeli-based company Yo! Egg is on a mission to change that! The brand just opened a factory in Los Angeles and has already started rolling out its vegan poached egg to vegan restaurants in the area. “The Poached One” is made from soybeans, chickpeas, and potato starch and packs 3g of protein per egg. Currently, you can find the egg on the menu at several Los Angeles vegan restaurants, such as Real Food Daily, Flore Vegan, Swingers Diner, Junkyard Dog, and Vegan District Asian Eatery. Make sure to keep Yo! Egg on your radar, because the brand plans to start working on vegan hard-boiled eggs and vegan sunny-side-up eggs soon!

VEGAN BUTTERBEER IS NOW AVAILABLE AT UNIVERSAL’S WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER If your mouth has been watering since Harry, Hermione, and Ron took their first sips of Butterbeer, then this one's for you! The fictionalized drink has been available at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter for more than a decade, but a vegan version has been unavailable until now. At both the Orlando and Hollywood locations, customers can now order cold and frozen vegan Butterbeer! The whimsical drink features flavors of vanilla, butterscotch, and shortbread and is topped with a vegan foam. You can find the drink at the Three Broomsticks and Leaky Cauldron restaurants in Orlando and at the Hog’s Head Pub and Three Broomsticks in Hollywood. Make sure to specify the vegan option when ordering, and keep in mind that there’s no vegan option for Hot Butterbeer just yet.

STEAKHOUSE CHAIN ADDS VEGAN MENU Steakhouses are generally no plant-based haven, but as the vegan movement continues to grow, more and more meatcentric restaurants are adding thoughtful and curated vegan options to their menus. Brazilian steakhouse chain Fogo de Chão announced earlier this year that it had ramped up its vegan options. While the chain had always provided modifiable vegan options and side dishes, those looking for fully plant-based entrees now have several to choose from, including a Seared Tofu with Miso Black Bean Pasta and a Roasted Power Vegetable Bowl. Additionally, the chain’s Market Table—a buffet collection of vegetables, salads, and sides inspired by the markets of Brazil—now boasts vegan-friendly items such as hummus, pasta, and salads.

OATLY ICE CREAM BARS NOW AVAILABLE AT MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL BALLPARKS Take me out to the ballgame … for vegan ice cream! Swedish oat milk company Oatly partnered with Minor League Baseball (MiLB) to bring vegan concession snacks to stadiums all across North America. More than 50 MiLB ballparks across the US and Canada are now stocking Oatly’s frozen dessert bars in both vanilla and chocolate fudge. The remaining parks in the MiLB organization will feature Oatly branding as the alternative milk company continues its expansion plans to make plant-based products widely accessible.

BLING EMPIRE’S KELLY MI LI LAUNCHES LINE OF VEGAN CHILI OILS Small-batch chili oil from your favorite reality TV star? Sign us up! Bling Empire’s Kelly Mi Li launched her own line of signature homemade chili oils earlier this year. Hot Jiang brings flavors from the Chinese region of Kunming straight to the bottle for you to enjoy at home with dumplings, noodles, rice, or whatever your heart desires. Each 6oz jar combines ingredients like black peppers, prickly ash, mushroom powder, garlic, and hot chili peppers to delicious perfection. Hot Jiang offers three varieties: Mild Spicy, OG Spicy, and Extra Spicy, so there’s a flavor for everyone in your life!

BARNES & NOBLE NOW OFFERS A VEGAN BREAKFAST SANDWICH When the largest retail bookstore chain in the country brings in a vegan sandwich, you know there’s no going back! In April, Barnes & Noble announced the addition of a vegan breakfast sandwich to all of its 500+ stores across the country. The sandwich features JUST Egg, Violife Smoked Provolone cheese, and a vegan aioli on a ciabatta roll. With stores in all 50 states, this partnership will make it easier than ever for people to give the plant-based sandwich a try. This marks the largest foodservice partnership to date for JUST Egg as the plant-based brand continues its expansion plans.

She’s Got Fire Under Her Feet An Interview with Singer, Activist, and Vegan Coffee Shop Owner

42 | VEGOUTMAG.COM

Leona Lewis Interview by Allie Mitchell Photos Courtesy of Coffee and Plants

offee and Plant

Left to Right: Dennis Jauch, Leona Lewis, and Achraf Sekhiri; Coffee and Plants’ Founders

Aside from releasing absolute bangers like “Bleeding Love,” performing on Broadway, and appearing in television shows, Leona Lewis dedicates much of her time to vegan activism. One of her latest forms of advocacy? Opening the sustainable LA vegan coffee shop, Coffee and Plants. We spoke with the musical icon herself to learn more about her plant-based journey and new coffee venture. Here’s what she had to say!

VegOut (VO): You’ve been plant-based for a while! What initially inspired you to go vegetarian—and then ultimately vegan?

VO: Why was it important to you to offer such a diverse range of sweet and savory bites at the shop?

Leona Lewis (LL): I’ve been vegetarian since I was about

drink at the store simply because, as someone who is plant-based, our options are often limited. I wanted a space where everyone was spoiled for choice, not just given a mediocre version of something you can find in a non-plant-based shop.

12. I remember seeing a group protesting against animal testing and feeling very moved by what they were saying. I decided to stop eating meat and only use non-animaltested products, which were quite difficult to find at that time. I would ask my mum to only buy things from The Body Shop, as it was the only way I knew that the products were cruelty-free. Later in life, I decided to stop consuming milk and cheese when I became more aware of the environmental and animal welfare issues surrounding these products.

VO: How did your vegan lifestyle affect your musical career? LL: Years ago, my choice to not consume or wear animal

products was met with a lot of resistance in my career. Many times on sets or tours, I would get pushback on making catering meat-free. I also had many campaigns and brands that I chose not to endorse because of animal testing or animal products being used in their lines. I feel that we are now in a better place and people have become more aware of animal welfare issues, but we still have a long way to go.

VO: Did you immediately start your activism work when you first went vegan? Or did those efforts grow over time? LL: I’ve been an animal activist since a very young age. It

started on a small scale—campaigning at school—and has grown with me over the years. I’m lucky enough to have a platform that can now shine a bigger light onto these issues and hopefully bring more compassion and awareness.

VO: We love your vegan coffee shop, Coffee and Plants! Why did you decide to pursue this venture? LL: I remember going for a coffee at Starbucks and seeing

mountains of milk cartons piled up in the trash. I thought to myself, “Wow, this is an insane amount of dairy that’s being consumed in just one store.” It kind of lit a spark in me to start a business that was inspired by my love of specialty coffee drinks and my passion for animal and environmental welfare. I feel we are in a place where our businesses must give back to our earth instead of depleting it, which is why we plant trees for cups of coffee sold. Items sold from our store also go toward supporting abused and neglected animals. I’m really proud of our community and the message of compassion we are spreading.

VO: Coffee and Plants serves some unique drinks—like the 24K Charcoal Latte. What went into curating the beverage menu? LL: Our beverages are inspired by the beauty of plants and the magic of nature. From our Rose Bowl Latte infused with homemade rose hibiscus syrup to our Blue Lavender Latte made with blue butterfly pea powder, we put a lot of love into every item we create.

LL: It was important to offer a diverse range of food and

VO: Let’s talk about the “Plants” in Coffee and Plants! How did the idea to combine the two come about? LL: Originally, I envisioned the store in a garden setting

surrounded by greenery. It was hard to find a location that allowed for it, so we decided to bring the outdoors inside with beautiful foliage and plants that immersed the guests in nature.

VO: Do you have any other vegan businesses or partnerships in the works? LL: I recently sang the theme song for an amazing Apple

TV+ show called Jane, which is inspired by the life and work of Jane Goodall. She is an absolute inspiration to me, and her work in environmental conservation is incredible. I’m so proud of our collaboration. We even have a drink dedicated to her called the JANE, which donates proceeds to her organization Roots & Shoots, a global movement of youth who are taking compassionate action within their community.

Leona’s Favorites: Must-have on-the-go snack: I’m loving dark chocolate-covered almonds at the moment. Go-to vegan restaurant in LA: Crossroads Kitchen Cruelty-free makeup essentials: My favorite makeup essential is actually a makeup remover wipe from Conscious Coconut. They leave your skin so soft. Favorite movie: Pan's Labyrinth First thing you do when you wake up: Breastfeed my baby Houseplant you love the most: Polka dot plant Current pump-up jam: Ayra Starr’s “Stability”

VEGANS

ON THE STREET

by ALEJANDRA TOLLEY

More people are going plant-based, and while it’s easy to join in on food trends at first, it’s important to remember that veganism is more than a diet—it’s a lifestyle. We checked in with some seasoned vegans nationwide to learn how they’ve stayed committed over the years and to hear their tips for plant-based novices.

VegOut:

What advice would you give someone who is struggling to stay vegan?

Jessica Zubia Calsada

Michelle Blackwood

Kayla Kaplan

she/her @plantawhisperer Vegan 8 years · Los Angeles, CA

she/her @healthiersteps Vegan 26 years · Hawthorne, FL

any pronouns @oyveyitskay Vegan 9 years · San Francisco, CA

JZC: My best advice to someone struggling to stay vegan is to recreate your family’s recipes! This, without a doubt, [saved me]! I never felt left out during family BBQs, birthdays, or any other family event. This is so easy with the rise of vegan food bloggers from all backgrounds. Veganism does not have to mean erasing your roots. I have found so much inspiration to recreate my mom’s Mexican recipes with the help of a quick Google search to find an egg white replacement for my chile rellenos or a vegan crema recipe. Be patient because you may need some trial and error before perfecting the dish.

MB: As a vegan, my best advice for those struggling to stay vegan is to be patient with yourself and focus on progress, not perfection. It is essential to understand that veganism is a journey, and it will take time to find the best plantbased alternatives and learn new recipes. Surround yourself with a supportive community, whether online or in-person, and don’t hesitate to ask for help or advice. Remember, every small change you make has a significant impact on your health, the environment, and animal welfare. Embrace the journey and celebrate each step you take toward a healthier, more compassionate, and sustainable life.

KK: I see veganism as an ethical practice, meaning it’s something that I work toward and recommit to every day. If you are noticing your struggle is coming from an external source or things outside of your control, I suggest pausing and reflecting on why you find veganism important, being patient and gentle with yourself, and adapting what you can for your unique situation. Most importantly, you and your practice do not need to fit within someone else’s conceptualization of veganism in order to be meaningful and impactful. Giving your veganism the space to grow and change as you do is key to turning a struggle into a sustainable way of life.

24 HOURS IN

Wilmington, North Carolina BY ALLISON VAN TILBORGH

STRADDLING THE CAPE FEAR RIVER, WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA IS YOUR NEXT NATURE VACATION DESTINATION! Home to rare plant species, beautiful lakes and parks, quaint Victorian homes, and delicious vegan fare, there is something for everyone in your party to fall in love with.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN Make your way to your accommodations in Wilmington’s historic downtown at Dreamers, a fully vegan bed and breakfast. The renovated jet black Victorian home boasts five uniquely themed rooms, each with its own name and essential oil blend. Dreamers offers a complimentary vegan breakfast each morning, including pastries, granola, and non-dairy milk for your coffee. You can also order a more deluxe, hot chef’s meal for breakfast or dinner to be enjoyed on-site. Elect to enjoy the offerings inside the dreamy indoor dining area or dine al fresco on their cozy wraparound porch beneath towering oaks. Refresh yourself with a warm shower complemented with your room’s 100% vegan hand soap (featuring charcoal, tea tree, and aloe) and organic castile soap (for body, face, and hair) before venturing into the city. The Green House

AUDUBON & GREENFIELD Pop out of the downtown hustle and bustle to enjoy a refreshing house-brewed kombucha at Panacea Brewing Company. This fully vegan hippie-themed brick-and-mortar serves dozens of unique kombuchas (including alcoholic variations) and beers, as well as items from a large vegan food menu. Nibble on Spinach & Artichoke dip served with toasted pita triangles or enjoy Fermented Fries with Beetroot Ketchup—pair either with a glass of Peach Basil booch. After relaxing with a hard kombucha, venture out to the lush Greenfield Lake Park for a scenic paddle-boating excursion. Navigate between century-old cypress trees, and if you’re lucky, spot one of the American alligators indigenous to the lake! A two-seated paddleboat will run just $10 an hour, making this a very economical activity in the city. Reflect on your thrilling experience over ‘50s-style plantbased fare at Sealevel City Vegan Diner. Order their famed Kimchi Reuben Sandwich or loaded gluten-free Chili Cheese Fries. Traveling with little ones? Sealevel City Vegan Diner also has a dedicated vegan kids’ menu, featuring a Big Kid Tray with your tot’s choice of falafel or plantains, hummus and veggies, and fries with “honey mustard” dipping sauce.

Dreamers

Little Dipper

CAPE FEAR RIVERWALK Stroll down Wilmington’s historic streets in the direction of the Cape Fear Riverwalk. Along the way, consider sharing vegan fondue at downtown’s Little Dipper restaurant. Offering five plant-based cheese fondue options, this Wilmington gem will leave you struggling to choose between their spicy Baja Cheddar fondue (with habanero and hot sauce) or their Switzerland Original (blended with warm spices—including nutmeg and garlic—and Kirsch). Continue onward for a sweet treat at Gelarto, a veganfriendly gelato scoop shop. Select from a variety of rotating rice milk-based vegan scoops, including (but not limited to) Vegan Sea Salt Caramel, Vegan Oreo, Caribbean Lime, Blood Orange, Mint Choc Chip, and classic Vegan Vanilla. With ice cream in hand, browse up and down the streets by the water, taking time out to read the plaques mounted on historic buildings (the colors of the plaques indicate the age of the structures) and historical markers—both of which reveal the complicated, and often dark, history of Wilmington.

The Green House

AIRLIE Peruse the majestic 67-acre Airlie Gardens in Midtown before finishing your night at the upscale plant-based sustainable restaurant The Green House. Following a seasonal, farm-to-table concept, The Green House sources thousands of its menu ingredients from its onsite greenhouse, which houses a small-scale organic and non-GMO hydroponics farm. Begin your meal with Red Pepper Donuts with red pepper-coriander jam, sherrymustard glaze, and marcona almond. Travel to Spain with their Chickpea Merguez, featuring Sea Island red peas, Carolina Gold middlins, green beans, local mushrooms, and green olive salsa. End your day with the housefavorite dessert—Milk & Cookies—and a full stomach!
