LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER

S

ince moving to Los Angeles, this time of year hasn’t felt quite the same. The fall and winter holidays without snow or frigid temperatures leaves me forgetting that it’s time to pull out the decorations and start my holiday shopping. But I’m still a kid at heart and look forward to these last few months on the calendar. I get to spend more time with family, see friends I haven’t seen in a while, and enjoy all the seasonal treats. So, in the spirit of the season, we’re covering everything festive—from vegan roasts and sugar cookies to cinnamon rolls and pumpkin spice.

But, first—an update. We launched this magazine four years ago as a way to give our audience a break from screen time, a print format to easily share with family and friends. But what began as an idea for a small brochure quickly turned into a full-blown publication. Our first issue was a Los Angeles magazine, and I did the distribution myself. Many people didn’t see the vision. One restaurant owner told me that no one would pay for a magazine and that it should be free. Needless to say, I didn’t listen to him. Over the past few years, with the changes brought on by Covid and increasing print prices, a lot of small, independent publishers like ourselves have had to make the difficult decision to either push forward through financial hardship or cut losses and close shop. That said, I’ve decided to take the magazine fully digital—to reduce our operating costs and move in a more environmentally friendly direction. We still plan to publish the quarterly magazine, but it will go out digitally instead of hitting newsstands. VegOut, to me, has always been about more than simply what I do for work. It’s about the mission, the movement. I’ll do everything I can to keep it alive. And with that, whether you go all out for the holidays or just enjoy them for the seasonal grocery items, we’ve curated this festive issue just for you. In these pages, you’ll find all things holiday— from store-bought roasts (page 26) and cookie decorating supplies (page 28) to mocktails (page 30) and vegan grocery hauls (page 60). Find holiday inspiration with our seasonal gift guides (pages 22 and 56) and create a new recipe favorite from around the world (page 42). Looking for interviews? We’ve got those, too! We sat down with Mandy Lee from the indie pop band MisterWives (page 14) and Chef Roy Elam of California’s delicious Italian restaurant, Donna Jean (page 44).

Cheers!

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

MisterWives’ Lead Singer Mandy Lee Tells All

INTERVIEW BY ALLIE MITCHELL

14 | VEGOUTMAG.COM

Inspiration Behind New Album, Nosebleeds How Veganism Brought the Band Together and

Her Pre-Show Routine

PHOTOS COURTESY OF MATTY VOGEL

VEGOUTMAG.COM | 15

When we first heard MisterWives’ Reflections album back in 2014, we knew there

was something special about the band—aside from their stellar sound and infectious energy. It’s because the lead singer Mandy Lee is vegan! To celebrate the release of MisterWives’ latest album, Nosebleeds, we spoke with Lee to learn more about the album and her vegan lifestyle on the road. Let’s get to it!

16 | VEGOUTMAG.COM

VEGOUT (VO): HOW WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO VEGANISM, AND WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT THE LIFESTYLE? MANDY LEE (ML): I grew up loving animals and rescuing every stray cat in my neighborhood, but never put together how my love for animals didn’t reflect what was on my plate. When I was 15, I took one of my sister's books with me for a flight that was all about veganism. When I landed, I made the life-changing decision to go vegan and never looked back. I quickly got my first job at Vegan Treats which made the transition extra sweet. And soon after, got a serving gig at Blossom where I met our drummer who worked down the block at Peacefood. While veganism has absolutely transformed my health and well-being for the better, it also is the reason our band started! VO: DO YOU RUN INTO OBSTACLES FINDING VEGAN OPTIONS IN SOME OF THE CITIES YOU TOUR IN? IF SO, WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THAT OCCURS? ML: It’s been incredible seeing the glow up of veganism and how much more mainstream it’s become which has definitely made touring easier. I feel lucky I’ve been touring for ten years, so I’ve gotten pretty good at knowing where to go for every city and if I don’t, I use the app HappyCow, which helps locate the nearest vegan options. When we first started touring, the options were sometimes slim to none, so I packed a hot plate and would buy groceries and cook in our van or hotel room. 10 years later, I still bring a hot plate but now because I just miss cooking while on the road and thankfully not because I can’t find veganfriendly options around. VO: WHAT IS YOUR PRE-SHOW ROUTINE? ML: [My] pre-show routine is my most grounding part of the day on tour! I’ll usually have a protein smoothie post-lunch—just to give myself extra fuel since the show is so physically demanding—accompanied with a ginger shot to wake up and tea to help soothe the vocal cords! A solid 30-minute vocal warm-up while I do hair and makeup, get into show clothes, stretch, some breathwork to help calm my nerves, and then it’s hands-in time, where we do a little chant that we’ve been doing since our first show.

VEGOUTMAG.COM | 17

VO: IF YOU COULD ONLY GO TO ONE VEGAN RESTAURANT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

VO: WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE YOUR FANS FEELING AFTER LISTENING TO NOSEBLEEDS? ML: I hope Nosebleeds empowers you to expand when others tell you to shrink, to give yourself permission to show up authentically as yourself, and as always the biggest gift of music—to help anyone who listens feel less alone in the loneliest, hardest parts of life.

ML: This is tough because there are so many amazing restaurants, but I think abcV [in NYC] takes the cake for my favorite veg restaurant! Their dishes are so innovative with the boldest, freshest ingredients that always leave me completely mesmerized with each bite. Close second fave would be Crossroads Kitchen [in Los Angeles], whose carbonara will forever blow me away and was such a pioneer in creating vegan egg yolk made from tomatoes. VO: CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW ALBUM, NOSEBLEEDS, AND FOR PERSISTING THROUGH THE MANY OBSTACLES YOUR BAND HAS FACED. ANY TIPS FOR OTHER CREATIVES TRYING TO WORK THROUGH HARDSHIPS? ML: Thank you so much for the kind words! While the industry can definitely feel like a neverending obstacle course, I would say the most important thing is to not give up on yourself and to always trust your inner knowing. If you believe in what you're creating, that's the North Star to keep following despite what others may say. Honestly, just like veganism—I remember being made fun of and heavily criticized as a teenager for being vegan, but I believed in my decision and didn’t let others deter me from what I knew to be right for me. VO: NOSEBLEEDS HAS QUITE A DIFFERENT SOUND THAN PREVIOUS ALBUMS. WHAT INSPIRED THIS CHANGE? ML: While the punches that kept coming inspired the change, my shift in showing up honestly and not censoring parts of myself really allowed this record to take shape. It felt like a disservice to my experience to try and sugarcoat my emotions sonically and lyrically for the sake of staying in whatever genre we’ve been put into. It was incredibly liberating to throw away the concept of genre and let suppressed feelings surface by owning my truth without fear of judgment or needing outside validation.

News IN THE

THE WHITE HOUSE HOSTS FIRST VEGAN STATE DINNER

OATLY CREAM CHEESE ROLLS OUT NATIONWIDE Oatly released two new vegan cream cheese flavors nationwide in June (Plain and Chive & Onion). Initially tested in bagel shops around Philadelphia in March, Oatly eventually gave the green light to a wider launch just months later. The cream cheeses, which utilize oats for their lower environmental impact, are now available in 8oz containers in stores across the US.

On June 22, the White House hosted a state dinner in honor of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, featuring an entirely plant-based menu (a historical first!). The menu was curated by renowned plant-based chef Nina Curtis in collaboration with White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford and Executive Pastry Chef Susan Morrison. The dinner included a fusion of American and Indian flavors with dishes like Marinated Millet & Grilled Corn Salad, Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms with Creamy Saffron-Infused Risotto, and Rose & CardamomInfused Strawberry Shortcake.

LEBRON JAMES PARTNERS WITH GAME CHANGERS FOR SEQUEL Grab some popcorn, because asequel to the popular pro-vegan documentary, The Game Changers, is currently in production. The creators of the original film have partnered with UNINTERRUPTED, an athlete empowerment brand founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, for the sequel. The new film, co-directed by Stephanie Soechtig and Kristin Lazure, will further explore the relationship between dietary factors and performance, children's health, food justice, and the environment.

TACO BELL TESTS VEGAN CRUNCHWRAP In June, Taco Bell launched the first-ever Vegan Crunchwrap at select locations in New York, Los Angeles, and Orlando. The Vegan Crunchwrap, which quickly sold out, featured a proprietary vegan seasoned beef, vegan blanco sauce, vegan nacho sauce, and traditional fixins (shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes) wedged with a crunchy tostada shell. Fingers crossed they bring it back nationwide very soon!

DOUBLETREE INTRODUCES VEGAN WELCOME COOKIE Let them eat cookies! In honor of National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, DoubleTree by Hilton, famous for its complimentary cookie welcome, introduced an allergy-friendly soft chocolate chip cookie in partnership with Partake Foods on August 4. The new vegan cookie is devoid of the top nine allergens (wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, milk, eggs, soy, fish, sesame, and shellfish) and produced in a dedicated allergenfree facility.

SLUTTY VEGAN OPENS NEW LOCATION AT SPELMAN COLLEGE During the company’s five-year anniversary celebration in August, Pinky Cole Hayes announced the unveiling of Slutty Vegan’s 13th location—at Spelman College. This Altanta-based HBCU has major historical and cultural significance to the community and to Cole Hayes herself, who attended an HBCU. The location is open to the public.

ATLAS OCEAN VOYAGES UNVEILS NEW VEGAN MENU You can now cruise to locations such as Antarctica, Malaga, and Rio de Janeiro while enjoying an exclusively plant-based menu with Atlas Ocean Voyages. Beginning in August, the yacht expedition cruise line announced several new dishes, including flaky vegan pastries, Fresh Beets Niçoise Salad, Oyster Mushroom Ceviche, and even Vegan Steak.

THE BEST VEGAN

Jewish Delis ACROSS THE US

BY ALLISON VAN TILBORGH

Pass the latkes! From Portland to Chicago and then to Los Angeles, three vegan Jewish delis have taken America by storm. Ben & Esther's, Sam & Gertie's, and Mort & Betty's have captured the hearts and palates of Jewish food lovers across the nation with their niche menus and nostalgic fare. As we celebrate the best of Jewish vegan deli culture, we are reminded that food can transcend generations, inspire love and nostalgia, and leave an enduring impact on the world.

Ben & Esther's

PORTLAND, SAN DIEGO, & SEATTLE

L’chaim! Nestled in the colorful streets of Portland's Alberta Arts district, Ben & Esther's' first location stands as a symbol of both tradition and innovation. Founded in 2019 by the enterprising Justin King, this vegan deli is a heartfelt tribute to his grandparents, Ben and Esther, who introduced him to the world of New York-style Jewish comfort food from an early age. As a Jewish vegan himself, Justin sought to create a dining experience that would warmly embrace nostalgia while accommodating evolving dietary preferences. At the heart of Ben & Esther's success lies their distinctive Jewish deli menu. Sink your teeth into signature offerings like the Classic Reuben, featuring savory plantbased pastrami, tart sauerkraut, and a Ben & Esther’s secret sauce. Or tempt yourself with the bestselling Benny's Brisket, stacked high with steak-like mushrooms, swiss cheese, and a zippy horseradish aioli, which will keep you returning for more. Ben & Esther’s serves ten distinct traditional bagel options (including salt, garlic, and pumpernickel) complemented by a set of eight schmears (including favorites like bacon-scallion, lemon-dill, and lox). The deli also pays homage to celebrities like Lizzo (the vegan queen herself), who personalized a bagel sandwich with scallion cream cheese and jalapeño bagels during her visit (just order “The Lizzo”). Wash down your decadent breakfast with a classic New York-style Egg Cream—a surprising mix of plant-based chocolate milk and seltzer water. The Seattle location, which boasts a full espresso bar, can also turn your Egg Cream into a Mocha Egg Cream with the addition of coffee. Seal the deal with matzah ball soup, latkes, or fresh-concocted dill pickles. During the holidays, enjoy Hanukkah favorites, including kugel, latkes, menorah-shaped cookies, and sufganiyot. With an eye on expansion, Ben & Esther's aims to bring Jewish vegan deli culture to major cities nationwide. VEGOUTMAG.COM | 35

Sam & Gertie’s CHICAGO

In Chicago's Sheridan Park neighborhood, Sam & Gertie’s has become a Jewish vegan destination, founded by culinary couple Andy Kalish and Gina Marino-Kalish, with a deep connection to the essence of Jewish cuisine. The mastermind behind Sam & Gertie’s is Andy Kalish, who was raised in Detroit's big Jewish deli culture, where he cherished family gatherings enriched by the soulful essence of Jewish cuisine. "It's steeped in my bones," he said, and this love for the culinary heritage of his people became the driving force behind the birth of this extraordinary deli. The menu at Sam & Gertie’s celebrates tradition with a compassionate twist. From the classic Levin Rueben with housemade corned beef, slaw, Michigan dried cherries (a nod to his home state), and Russian dressing on rye to their Goldies' Lakx, a smoky, cured tomato sensation paired with dill pickle cream cheese, each dish is an unforgettable experience. Pair your main with a Broccoli Cheddar Knish or Challah Wrapped Hot Dog (yes, you read that right) for a perfect American Jewish food pairing. In the mood for a sweet? End your visit with a Coconut Orange Chocolate Rugelach, Mandel Bread, Black & White Cookies, and fluffy donuts, which have all become instant classics. “We just do our best to do a great job with plants. We want to create deeply soulful food that connects to people,” Kalish shared. Each morning, you can also get a $1 cup of coffee in honor of Kalish’s grandfather, Sam, a Detroit hardware shop owner who always provided his guests with free coffee as a gesture of goodwill. Kalish’s grandparents, Sam and Gertie, are the inspiration behind every dish, and their legacy is carried on through the store’s culinary journey. For Hanukkah, Sam & Gertie’s sells “The Essential Chanukah Kit” which comes complete with Challah, Matzo Ball Soup, Latkes, and Sufganiyot for a convenient delicious culinary solution for celebrating the festival of lights! In true Jewish fashion, Sam & Gertie’s’ most popular holiday food offering is their “A Very Jewish Christmas” set of all Chinese food featuring: Egg Rolls, Crabby Rangoon, Hot & Sour Soup, Braised No-Fish in a black bean sauce, BBQ Char Siu No-Pork, and Commanders Orange Chiken, served with sweet Green Tea Ice Cream and homemade Almond Cookies! 36 | VEGOUTMAG.COM

Mort & Betty's LOS ANGELES

Pickle seltzer, anyone? In sunny Los Angeles, Mort & Betty's is a plant-based, farm-to-pop-up veggie delicatessen established in 2018. Founded by culinary mastermind Megan Tucker (former Executive Fine Dining Chef and Whole Foods executive), the deli's mission goes beyond serving delicious dishes—it also supports the creation of a farm animal sanctuary, making every bite a contribution to a better world for animals and humans alike. At Mort & Betty's, vegetables reign supreme! Tucker's mission was to veganize classic Jewish deli staples with ingredients that people are familiar with. Her motto: Go vegan harder. The fruit of her work? An innovative take on Gefilte Fish (a medley of white and yellow carrots, mushrooms, and jackfruit), Corned Beef (corned beets), Reuben Tacos, and classic open-faced bagel sandwiches like her signature Megan Thee Scallion (named after her and Megan Thee Stallion, of course, with scallion cream cheese and carrot lox) or Uncle Larry (named after her actual reallife uncle, featuring an olive bagel filled with white carrot white fish salad and pickled green tomatoes). Avoiding mock meats, Mort and Betty’s always make plants the star. Got a sweet tooth? Indulge in Mort & Betty’s' Tahini Chocolate Chip Black & White, which incorporates sustainable local Sonora flour. Or need something to wash down your veggie deli goodies? Sip on Mort & Betty’s signature creation, the world’s first Pickle Seltzer! Served with classic seltzer water over electrolyte-full ice cubes of pickle juice and watermelon, you’ll be glad you tried this unique beverage. For Hanukkah, Mort & Betty’s does a gluten-free fried Dill Pickle Latke that incorporates natural fermented pickles into their signature potato-chickpea flour mixture. Served with a delicious cashew Russian dressing, this is not your Ima’s typical latke. Local farms are the backbone of Mort & Betty's. The deli works with farms throughout Southern California, like Sunrise Organic Farm, which supplies the bulk of their carrots. Tucker sources organic flour from Central Milling on the West Coast and works with the Tehachapi Grain Project to revive heritage grains in a sustainable way. At Mort & Betty’s, even leftover farmers market strawberries find new life as delicious jam, eliminating food waste one jar at a time. Like the other vegan Jewish delis in this roundup, Mort & Betty’s is, too, an homage to the founder’s grandparents.

This holiday season, give a gift for a more just world by supporting a woman-of-color-led organization—a nonprofit that believes in veganism for the animals, supports the rights of farm workers by organizing school supply drives and more, works to fight food apartheid, and encourages transparency in the chocolate industry by asking consumers to not support slavery and child labor.

We know that it is not only our individual food choices that can make a difference in the world but our collective voices. Why not use food as a tool to help create a better world? "Don't forget to check out our F.E.P.–recommended Chocolate List!"

VEGANS

ON THE STREET

BY A L E JA N D R A TO L L E Y

With the rise of plant-based items hitting the shelves, we can veganize almost anything! The holiday season is the best time of year to showcase your cooking skills and a great opportunity to introduce vegan versions of nostalgic dishes to friends and family. We talked with some readers nationwide to see how they transform their favorite recipes without compromising culture and taste.

PT: My go-to dish to share with non-vegan friends and family during holiday dinners is Taiwanese stir-fried rice vermicelli noodles, also known as “chao mi fen” (炒米粉). Inspired by my Taiwanese mom’s recipe, this dish holds a special place in my heart as it brings back many nostalgic memories. By simply omitting the eggs or using an egg substitute like JUST Egg and incorporating slices of braised pressed tofu, you can create a delicious, healthy, and filling vegan meal anyone can enjoy. The response to these noodles has always been positive, and it brings me incredible joy to see my loved ones appreciating the flavors of this dish!

JS: When it comes to holiday dinners, my favorite thing to bring to the table is arroz con gandules and my famous lasagna. Growing up Puerto Rican, we always ate rice on the side with our pasta ... as if one or the other wasn’t enough! The tradition has [continued with] my [own] cooking style. There’s something so comforting and filling about eating both of these dishes together surrounded by those you love most. I’ve been told that eating these feels like the warmest hug and that is the energy I try to bring through all of my dishes, so I’m glad I’ve achieved that during the holiday season and beyond.

SN: I grew up in a Muslim household—Christmas or the holidays weren’t acknowledged at all. I like to celebrate [by sharing] my cultural South Asian food with friends in the form of biryani and samosas. It feels like the best way for me to celebrate, with the foods I love and grew up with. Samosas are popular in other cultures as well as in North America. I wanted to start with something familiar and easy to recreate. I chose biryani because it showcases how delicious vegan food can be with its multiple layers of spices and flavors and by adding seitan. Both dishes easily show that vegan food doesn’t have to sacrifice flavor or cultural authenticity.

Poljički Soparnik (Swiss Chard Pie)

Momos

Poljički soparnik is a cherished Croatian dish that hails from the Poljica region and is completely plant-based by default! This traditional delicacy is a savory pie made from simple ingredients but packed with flavor. Thin layers of dough, made of just flour, water, and a pinch of salt, are meticulously rolled out to form a delicate base. It is then generously filled with a mixture of Swiss chard, garlic, onions, and olive oil and each layer of dough is carefully folded over to create a multilayered delight that is then baked to a golden perfection. The dish pays homage to the historical sustenance of the region’s agricultural communities and is a cultural treasure that continues to be savored, shared, and celebrated, bridging the past with the present in every savored bite.

Hailing from the Himalayan region of Nepal, momos are savory, delicate dumplings featuring a light layer of dough enveloping a flavorful filling. The filling is customizable to one’s preference, and there is no going wrong with a creative combination of plant-based ingredients! Simply blend any plant-based protein of your choice or your favorite vegetables with aromatic spices and herbs. Your guests are guaranteed a harmonious burst of flavors with every bite. Momos can be steamed or fried, and we recommend serving them with a side of zesty dipping sauce, typically made from tomatoes, chilis, and garlic. These Nepali household staples have gained popularity with food enthusiasts across the world! Nepali momos offer a taste of tradition and a warm sense of community, embodying the essence of Nepali cuisine.

INDONESIA:

Tempeh Kecap Lettuce Cups This appetizer serves up a creative take on Indonesian cuisine and guarantees a visual and gustatory treat. The star of the dish is the Indonesian plant-based protein staple tempeh, marinated in a sweet Indonesian soy sauce called kecap manis. The tempeh is then sautéed to a satisfying crispness, complementing its nutty essence. Fresh lettuce leaf “cups” offer a refreshing and crisp contrast to the sweet and savory tempeh. Quintessential tempeh kecap toppings include peanuts, cilantro, and a drizzle of chili sauce, all of which add layers of complexity to every bite!

TOURING MUSICIAN TURNED Y CHEF MEET THE

ou know when you can just tell someone is a good person? That’s how we feel about Chef Roy Elam. This Midwesterner ditched his touring musical career to open a sustainable vegan restaurant in Southern California named after his late mother. Donna Jean debuted in San Diego in 2017 and expanded to Los Angeles in 2022. Through both restaurant locations, Elam pours his culinary skill into a thoughtful menu of Italian American comfort food cuisine featuring sustainable ingredients and seasonal produce. Customers can’t get enough of Donna Jean’s pizzas, handmade pastas, and brunch biscuits, among other great hits. (We dream about the cast iron mac ‘n’ cheese frequently!) Keep reading to learn more about Elam’s vegan journey, culinary career, and holiday advice.

BEHIND CALIFORNIA’S

DONNA JEAN

INTERVIEW BY ALLIE MITCHELL PHOTOS COURTESY OF LINDSAY KREIGHBAUM

VEGOUTMAG.COM | 45

VEGOUT (VO): CAN YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT YOUR VEGAN BEGINNINGS? HOW WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO THE LIFESTYLE, AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TRY IT? ROY ELAM (RE): The first vegan I ever met was a guy I worked with at Denny’s in Southern Illinois. He was in the hardcore scene, which I was also very into at the time so it made me think about the concept a bit more. Ultimately, the idea of killing something for food started to repulse me and the desire to eat or use any animal products faded quickly. My wife and I went vegan at the same time and have stayed vegan together over the years. VO: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SWITCH CAREER PATHS FROM TOURING MUSICIAN TO VEGAN CHEF? RE: Touring as an independent band is really hard financially. There came a point when touring full time just didn’t make sense anymore, so we all had to find different ways to sustain ourselves. To me, being a chef satisfies the creative side that drew me to being a musician in the first place. I still love music and am always on the lookout for new artists. That side of me still exists and always will.

VO: IS THERE ANYTHING FROM YOUR MUSIC CAREER THAT HAS HELPED YOU IN YOUR CULINARY CAREER? RE: Absolutely. Running a restaurant is a lot like running a band. We are all creative people working together to take an idea and make it the best it can be. I may be the creative head and have the overall vision, but I am only as good as my team. In songwriting, I would always come up with an idea and present it to my bandmates, and we would work together to make it better than I could have imagined on my own. I also feel this way with Donna Jean. I have great people around me who are always pushing to make what I have presented even better day after day. VO: DID YOU GO TO FORMAL CULINARY SCHOOL, OR DID YOU LEARN YOUR COOKING SKILLS THROUGH EXPERIENCE? RE: I never went to culinary school. I don’t have anything against it, and I did think about going several times. Ultimately, I learned on the job and on my own time through experimentation. I have also had the pleasure of working with some talented people along the way who have taught me skills I still use to this day. VO: THE MENU AT DONNA JEAN FOCUSES ON SCRATCH-MADE ARTISAN PIZZAS, HANDMADE PASTAS, AND VEGETABLES. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT TESTING THESE RECIPES? RE: Trial and error! We go through multiple versions of everything before we get to the finished product. The best example of this is our pizza dough. I feel like we are probably on version 100 by now. VO: WE LOVE THAT YOUR RESTAURANT IS DEDICATED TO YOUR MOTHER, DONNA JEAN. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO SHARE ABOUT HER THROUGH THE DINING EXPERIENCE? RE: She was very much about family and taking care of everyone else first. I believe that is what we try to do here at Donna Jean. We do our best to take care of our employees and guests in the best way we can every day. VO: DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR VEGANS COOKING FOR THE HOLIDAYS? RE: My best advice is to always cook with the seasons. Find what is good around you and let that inform your ideas. VO: ANY HOLIDAY SPECIALS WE CAN EXPECT TO SEE AT DONNA JEAN? RE: We always try to do something fun for holidays. For example, we always offer a full spread for Thanksgiving every year. VEGOUTMAG.COM | 47

SHOPPING SECONDHAND THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

BY JILL ETTINGER 50 52 | VEGOUTMAG.COM

Benefits of Secondhand Gifting

W

hile shopping secondhand has become far more acceptable in recent years, that wasn’t always the case. It was often viewed as a sign of frugality or insensitivity—a last resort, even. But, secondhand gifting brings you and your giftee the opportunity to embrace sustainability, heritage, and uniqueness.

Try secondhand shopping this holiday season for the planet, your budget, and memorable gifts.

T

his time of year, the consumerism tide often propels us toward the latest, the flashiest, the most novel gift ideas, even when we know our gift recipient would be happier with less. What’s more, these new gifts can be problematic for the planet, contributing to the climate crisis—one study found that the production and use of household goods and services were responsible for 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions. There’s also the impact on our bank accounts. Stores can increase prices on new items around the holiday season. The facade that new is “best” often gives those items a higher sticker price to begin with. Enter: secondhand gifts. Not only can gifting secondhand items reduce our environmental impact and keep our holiday budgets in check but shopping secondhand can also provide some pretty unique and memorable gifts as well.

One of the most significant advantages of secondhand gifting is its alignment with sustainable and ethical consumer practices. A myriad of environmental issues are associated with new product manufacturing, including excessive resource use, harsh chemicals, plastic pollution, deforestation and biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emissions. By gifting secondhand items, you help reduce the demand for new products, leading to lower production levels and the associated environmental impacts. VEGOUTMAG.COM | 53

There's also the unique charm that comes with secondhand gifts—a distinct personality shaped by the items’ previous owners and their journeys. Whether it's a vintage vegan leather jacket perfectly distressed, a classic novel, or an antique piece of furniture, jewelry, or kitchen item, there’s a good chance you’ll find something with depth and character that you can’t find new. Secondhand gifting can also be a wise economic choice without compromising on quality. Often, items with excellent craftsmanship and durability can be found in thrift stores, online marketplaces, or even in one's attic. Gifting these allows one to offer high-quality, often luxury items, at a fraction of the original cost. It's a practical way of making your budget stretch further while still providing a gift that's valuable and appreciated. Of course, some secondhand items, like those found in antique or vintage stores, can cost more than new items. Think of a fully restored piece of midcentury furniture, an era-esque collectible, or a piece of art. But you can often find these items in thrift stores, too, for a fraction of the price at an antique store. If budget isn’t an issue, scouring vintage stores can turn up some truly thrilling gifts that bring all of those environmental benefits. By choosing to gift secondhand, you subtly encourage a shift toward more mindful consumption. It’s a small yet powerful step toward promoting a circular economy, where goods are reused, repurposed, and recycled, minimizing waste, pollution, and excess. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, durable goods make up nearly 20 percent of landfill waste. Reducing the production of new items inevitably helps chip away at this number.

Finding the Perfect Secondhand Gift Unlike heading over to Amazon or your nearest shopping mall, the search for the perfect secondhand gifts may take a bit more of your time. And, like everywhere else, thrift and antique shops see a surge around the holidays, so your best bet is to shop early in the season. (And, pro tip: Kids are far more easily impressed by gifts than adults! They are also much less likely to take issue with secondhand gifting.) New to secondhand gifting? Try looking for some of these items in thrift or antique stores: Books Board games Cookware Tableware Glassware Ceramics Knick-knacks Art Lamps Graphic T-shirts Jackets or blazers Denim Dresses Skirts Sweaters Handbags Jewelry Furniture

Are you crafty? Perhaps you can refinish a piece of furniture or touch up a painting. If you know your way around a sewing machine, you could also source materials from a secondhand store and repurpose them into something new.

Where to Shop Secondhand Secondhand stores go beyond your local Goodwill—although it’s a great place to go and help support your local community. It’s also often the first place secondhand items wind up—buyers for higherend stores go and scour Goodwill and Salvation Army daily in search of those items they can sell for a profit. Your town may also have specialty secondhand shops like vintage clothing stores focused on a certain era style or secondhand furniture shops, jewelry shops, and more. There are a number of secondhand online platforms you can search, too. For furniture, check out Chairish, Offerup, and even the Facebook Marketplace. For clothing and accessories, Vestiaire Collective, The RealReal, thredUp, and Fashionphile all offer a range of pristine secondhand items. Additionally, groups like Buy Nothing on Facebook can be a reliable resource for finding free items on your shopping list. You can also check to see if there are clothing swaps in your town (or start your own!) where you can trade your gently used clothing, accessories, and even home goods for new-to-you items. And nothing beats the weekend flea market or yard sale. If you frequent those in the summer or warmer months, keep an eye out for the perfect presents— the thrill of the secondhand hunt is a gift in and of itself!
