RAISING STANDARDS

FOOD SAFETY “Food Safety… is not only a matter of law enforcement, but also of morality, public health and the well-being of the nation’s future generations.” - Head of the Vietnam General Council of Agriculture and Rural Development

Recent reports suggest that Vietnamese consumers are experiencing an unprecedented level of food safety incidents.

Key problems include microbiological & chemical contamination and a growing concern about high levels of cancer potentially linked to food contaminants. To address this issue sensitively, Abbott is working with several partners including Vietnam Food Administration (VFA), National Institute of Food Control (NIFC), National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH), New Zealand Food Safety Science Centre for Research

(NZFSSCR), and a network of research institutes. Our initiatives leverage our research findings and address current issues through symposia, preventative programs, technical training programs and food safety awareness campaigns. As a part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation – Partnership Training Institute Network (APEC-PTIN), a Food Safety Co-operation Forum was conducted in August 2017, in Vietnam.

RAISING STANDARDS

BLOOD SAFETY We work to share advances in science and raise the level of knowledge of international guidelines and norms. Blood safety is a critical underpinning for safe blood transfusion and health systems. People in every country have a right to expect that the blood and blood products supplied to them are gathered, produced and provided in a safe and sustainable way that supports their communities and their health systems.

With partners such as Medic-Lab—a pioneer in laboratory testing, Ireland-Vietnam Blood-Borne Virus Initiative (IVVI), Ho Chi Minh City Liver Association and the Association of Clinical Biochemists, we organize symposiums, road shows and speaker engagements that cover advances in a variety of areas, from blood-testing systems, to clinical lab-science.

As a global leader in blood screening, Abbott is building Vietnam’s expertise in blood testing systems and clinical laboratory science.

ACHIEVING QUALITY AT SCALE

MAKING BREAKTHROUGH PRODUCTS AVAILABLE IN VIETNAM Keeping Vietnam healthy means ensuring the latest advances—products, solutions, and thought leadership— are made available here with the same expediency they are afforded across the world. This has been our consistent approach with our globally established nutritional products like Ensure - #1 prescribed adult nutrition supplement and our other infant and growing children nutrition products. We also provide nutritional support for

specialized conditions like Diabetes and Cancer. Abbott’s cardiology devices have long been helping keep hearts healthy in Vietnam. At the forefront is our trusted brand Xience, the world’s leading & safest drug eluting stent. For people with Mitral Regurgitation, Abbott offers a novel way of leading better lives with Mitraclip, a catheter based device that allows doctors to treat Mitral Regurgitation inside a beating heart, thereby avoiding open-heart surgery.

Recently the Cho Ray hospital, Ho Chi Minh became the first hospital in Vietnam to have our state-of-the-art decision support system AlinIQ installed. This will help provide intelligent data analytics and improve operational efficiencies.

In pharmaceuticals, we cater to several therapeutic areas, including gastroenterology, women’s health, and cardiology, amongst others. Our key prescription products include global firsts like Lipanthyl, Klacid, Duphaston along with a large portfolio of branded generic medicines.

ACHIEVING QUALITY AT SCALE

BETTER HEALTHCARE, BETTER OUTCOMES, BETTER NUTRITION Hospitals in Vietnam are overloaded, with 60% of the patients estimated to be malnourished or at risk of malnutrition. We saw an urgent need to reduce readmission rate and Length of Stay (LOS).

Abbott’s pioneering work in nutritive healthcare has shown the critical impact clinical nutrition plays in convalescence. In Vietnam, where hospitals lack sufficient beds and malnutrition is estimated in nearly 60% of all patients, we saw the urgent need and opportunity to help government hospitals reduce care-cost and the length of stay. In an MOU with the MOH, Vietnam, Abbott initiated the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) for Clinical Nutrition in Vietnam Hospitals. This involved the development of

a standardized tool and process to screen and assess patients for nutritive deficiencies and enhancement of knowledge and capacities in healthcare professionals through QIP trainings.

IMPACT OF PILOT

Abbott Nutrition is also coordinating with University Medical Center (UMC) in Ho Chi Minh City to conduct a QIP study, which aims to assess the impact of a NutritionHOSPITALS focused Quality Improvement Program (QIP) in Hospitalized Malnourished Patients in Vietnam.

BUILDING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES

REACHING OUT TO COMMUNITIES IN NEED Women’s Union

Rural Community Outreach

Providing Silver Linings

An Abbott survey indicated that breastfeeding of newborn babies is often neglected by new mothers in Vietnam, despite their understanding of its importance. In partnership with the 13 million member strong Women’s Union, we developed a program to educate women on its benefits, and support their ability to breastfeed. The program has grown substantially and now covers most of the provinces known for high rates of infant malnutrition.

Over 25 percent of Vietnamese children under age 5—especially in rural areas— are underweight, according to UNICEF. Since 2004, Abbott has facilitated the spread of nutritional education and helped improve overall health by targeting children early in life. The resultant drop in childhood malnutrition is clearly visible in communities where our programs are conducted.

We make sure we’re there when we’re most needed: helping communities deal with natural crises, such as the typhoons Wutip and Nari, the avian flu epidemic, and more recently, the rising tide of diseases like diabetes and hypertension that come in the wake of changing diets and lifestyles.

BUILDING HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES

ENRICHING MINDS AND BODIES Abbott Fund Institute for Nutrition Science (AFINS) manifests our commitment to innovating long-term solutions that improve health. Backed by an investment of USD 4.4 million and the active support of local and international partners, AFINS is helping Vietnam set higher standards for clinical nutrition best practices in hospitals across the country. A partnership between the Abbott Fund, Boston University, Bach Mai Hospital, The National Institute of Nutrition and Hanoi

Medical University, AFINS pioneered the spread of clinical nutrition in Vietnam. Through training courses, workshops, and overseas fellowships. AFINS has trained thousands of healthcare professionals through its programs to demonstrate the impact. Our partner hospital Bach Mai successfully reduced malnutrition cases by 30% and is also considered as a model for clinical practices. Bach Mai is now helping to replicate the program and spread its learnings to other hospitals across the country.
