EDITOR’S NOTE

W Modern Style

We spent a lot of time look ing for the right house to spotlight in this issue. It had to be somewhat environmentally sensitive. Not a perfect cave, mind you, but at least a shade of green. And we were hoping for an element of affordability. Eye candy was a prerequisite; it had to look good in photos. Most of all, we were looking for a house with style. We found one (cover and p. 36) that wears a hat: a voguish steel lid that would have made Carmen Miranda blush. Digging deeper we discovered that the house wasn’t entirely new, in spite of its contemporary look. Rather than tear down a mid-century bore on a nice lot, the architect, Studio Dig’s William Growdon, had removed the old roof but left much of the original structure. Sure, from there he knocked down walls and basically reconceived the place. But he didn’t start the construction project by slashing and burning everything in sight. It’s a relatively cost-effective and environmentally sensitive approach to architecture. Growdon greened it up even more by using high efficiency windows and floors made from fast growing bamboo or Trex, a material composed of recycled plastic bags. And the house certainly doesn’t lack style. From the moment I saw its roof I was pretty sure we’d found the right place. A retro-cool Airstream camper in the driveway helped convince me, and a

bizarre, futuristic-looking addition sealed the deal. Stuck incongruously to the back of the house, the metal and translucent glass box—How else to describe it?—floods the stairway with natural light, lending the property a unique touch of panache. It is the flamboyant scarf that sets off the steel hat and completes the outfit, so to speak. Style goes a long way. At CandleLight Kitchen and Bar (p. 27) in downtown Ventura, it effectively launches a late Victorian house into the stratosphere of the new millennium, converting historical City Landmark 78 into an ultra-contemporary restaurant and nightclub. The hip scene isn’t for everyone; some people will, understandably, find it over-the-top. This is a place where torches dance in a waterfall, where 20 people at once recline on a supersized divan or sip cocktails named “Desire” and “Envy” in an eyeballthemed lounge. The concept is worlds removed from anything that’s been attempted at the location, which has seen ordinary restaurants come and go over the years. But passersby won’t likely notice anything different at 211 East Santa Clara Street. From the outside it looks about the same—the familiar old house that’s been there since 1912. A lot of Ventura County’s cool is hidden away like that. Which explains in part why people tend to overlook our area, blowing past the strip malls and car dealerships along the 101. But then they find themselves on back roads through rural utopias like Hidden Valley, Somis, and Upper Ojai. Or watching a world-class performance at the Ventura Music Festival (see special program in this issue). And they wonder what else they’ve been missing just off the freeway. Most of us know. They’re missing quite a bit, enjoyed largely by those of us who call this place home. Thanks again for your support. As always, feel free to drop a line and let us know what’s on your mind.

Build Smart Energy saving tips from local expert David Inger

Energy efficiency expert David Inger has 25 years of technical energy expertise. But that doesn’t stop him being able to communicate with average homeowners. Here, when asked a simple question—Which energy saving upgrades result in the most dramatic energy savings?—he deconstructs the jargon and shares seven practical tips in a language we can all understand.

THE RIGHT SIZE HOUSE “Larger houses require more money and material to build, and more energy to heat and cool. A small house with just average energy performance will require significantly less energy to heat and cool than a large house that’s designed for superior energy performance. It’s much easier to achieve energy savings by making your house smaller than by tracking down the specialized building material and techniques required to match small house energy performance in a larger house.” TANKLESS WATER HEATERS “Half of the natural gas used in a typical home in this region is used for heating water. Installing a tankless water heater can save you 30 to 50 percent of that water-heating energy. Tankless, or ‘on-demand,’ water heaters are more efficient than standard tank systems since they only heat water when it is needed; standard water heating systems must keep an entire tank, typically 40 gallons, of water hot 24 hours a day.” EXTRA INSULATION “Insulation slows down the flow of heat—in the winter it helps keep heat in the house, and in the summer it helps keep heat out. A wellinsulated house saves energy, lowers your heating and cooling bills, and allows you to get by with smaller-capacity heating and air conditioning systems. The more you insulate, the more your energy sav-

ings can add up. By keeping temperatures more moderate, and reducing drafts, insulation can also create a more comfortable home year-round.” RADIANT BARRIERS “Install radiant barriers (a reflective surface that minimizes heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter) on the underside of roofs in residential buildings. Radiant barriers can also be installed in walls and in vaulted ceilings.” DUCT TESTING “Central air conditioning and heating are the top energy consumers in California homes, so ensuring the efficiency of your entire HVAC system can yield big improvements in energy efficiency. When we think about saving energy, we commonly focus on the furnace and air conditioner units, but a leaky duct system can reduce your climate control system’s efficiency 20 to 30 percent. These leaks can bring unwanted dust, unconditioned outdoor air, and humidity into living spaces, and take money straight out of your wallet.” ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES “The energy used by refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and other appliances adds up quickly; refrigerators alone account for 19 percent of household electricity use in California. The ENERGY STAR® program identifies appliances that

offer superior energy efficiency, making it easy to choose appliances that will save you energy, water, and money.” (Look for the ENERGY STAR label, which identifies products that meet strict guidelines set by the EPA and the U.S. Department of energy.) HIGH EFFICIENCY WINDOWS “Windows are the primary weak spot for heat loss in any building. In the summer they can let in unwanted heat, and in the winter they can account for as much as 25 percent of heat leakage. Dramatic improvements in window technology during the past 30 years are largely responsible for our ability to create buildings with superior energy performance. These technologies are widely available and relatively inexpensive.” David’s picks were chosen based on the following criteria: Do it right the first time “There are many energy opportunities that you will only have during your construction or remodeling. … Making the wrong choice now can be a huge lost opportunity.” Bang for the buck “If you are going to make an investment in enhanced energy efficiency, you should expect a good return on your investment. Let’s assume you are going to spend $350,000 to construct that new 2,000-square-foot house. For about $500 more you can have your heating and cooling ducts tested to insure that there is minimum leakage (lost energy).” Leave Title 24 in the dust “Title 24 is recognized as one of the most stringent energy codes in the nation, but it is still a minimum standard. These ‘picks’ will enhance your energy efficiency by 10 to 50 percent above Title 24. v David Inger is the energy projects manager for Ventura County Regional Energy Alliance, a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) composed of public agencies working in collaboration to approach the availability, reliability, conservation, and innovative use of energy resources in the Ventura County region. For details, see VCEnergy.org. ABOUT TOWN

Walking on their farm during the summer bloom is like visiting a candy store filled with tubers rather than tootsie rolls.

Dahlia Dreams

I

It started innocently enough, with a few flowers. Now the annual bloom at Love House Dahlias attracts busloads of green-thumbed admirers.

BY DK CRAWFORD If dahlias were a religion, Ann and Andy Dunstan would be their prophets. The owners of Love House Dahlias are enchanted by their work, and it’s not because of some bottom line but rather a connection they share with the flowers and what those flowers in turn give back. Their ultimate goal is to share the love by having “at least one dahlia in every yard in Ventura County.” Walking on their farm during the summer bloom is like visiting a candy store filled with tubers rather than tootsie rolls. Row upon row of vastly diverse Technicolor flowers provoke a sense of wonder. Compact, oxblood red, button-shaped blossoms mingle with frilly orange flounces while precisely folded origami peach pinwheels nod at winter white blossoms as big as dinner plates. The Dunstans first discovered dahlias in Washington State, where homemade stands of them line the roads. When they moved into the historical J. Hoover Love House in downtown Ventura in 1994, Ann imported her first few bulbs and was surprised by what she received. “You start out with something that looks like a nasty, scrawny, gonna-go-nowhere potato,” she said while holding up a gnarled brown root From those first oblong tubers, leafy green plants branched out and blossoms magically appeared. “Each bulb gives so much!” she exclaimed. “What you give to them, they give back tenfold; they just bloom and bloom for months.” After digging up the dahlia bulbs at the end of the season, they can be cleaned and divided into one to 10 more tubers. They are planted again in the spring, around March, depending on the weather, and bloom through September. After Ann dug and divided hers that first year, she was hooked. Andy grew concerned about her staying up late at night, looking so serious, and finally asked what

With their stunning flowers (left), dahlias can be addictive. Ann and Andy Dunstan (right) open up their Foster Park garden for annual tours (above right), which attract thousands of visitors.

was on her mind. “She would literally sit up plotting where she could fit one more dahlia on the property, always looking for just one more square inch she could fill,” he explained. Soon, she’d covered their front and back yards, and even talked her neighbor into plowing up part of his lawn for a bed. As the Dunstan’s array of colorful flowers bloomed, a flock of admirers appeared. First, passersby asked to purchase cut flowers; then others stopped to ask how to grow them. One morning the Dunstans awoke to 50 strangers peering over their fence. A tour bus had stopped and visitors stood gawking at the blossoms. “Some were moved to tears,” said Ann. The Dunstan’s house became a regular stop for the buses. Ann soon began growing blooms for competition and most recently won 47 blue ribbons at the 2008 Ventura County Fair. She has also hybridized, propagated, and named five of her own new dahlia varietals. So far she keeps the names in the family, including one called “Lahti-Da” for their daughter Lahti. Soon the Dunstans ran out of earth to grow more dahlias at the Love House and Anne started eyeing the roof. It was then that they decided to move Love House Dahlias to a three-and-three-quarters-acre farm on Santa Ana Road, near Foster Park in western Ventura. Now they have thousands of plants rather than 800, and instead of buses of 50 showing up to gawk, over 2,000 people came to their September Open House this year to walk among the flowers and place their orders for the upcoming season. Their current location is a mélange of boarded horses, goats, ducks, and dahlias all happily co-existing. The animals provide fertilizer and the dahlias bulbs

that don’t survive dividing are a special treat for the horses. Anne even uses dahlia bulbs to make bread, substituting them for zucchini. She is something of an “earth mother,” with sable and silver streaked hair and a wicked sense of humor. As we spoke, she got lost at moments, watching birds bathe in a rain puddle. Andy has a strawberry blonde ponytail, aqua eyes, and a mercurial mind. He wears a St. Therese of Lisieux (the patron saint of flowers) medal around his neck, and has been busy inventing systems for the new farm. Though it’s been almost nothing but hard work since they moved, they both glow when talking about the flowers and the joy they bring. The Dunstans considered changing the name of their business when they moved, but really no other name seemed quite so well suited. “This is a love house too,” said Anne, smiling at Andy. “How can you go wrong with love?” v

Rising Star

Ventura’s S ophie Wingland has never b een one for the straight road. Now, at age 21, the talented soprano is lo ok ing to push op era in a whole new dir ec tion.

BY IVOR DAVIS

i

It was a noisy Saturday night at the Ventura Harbor Comedy Club. Table five was raucously celebrating a birthday, with nonstop primo margaritas. I ordered a drink called a Twisted Orchid from the pretty blonde waitress as the first two comics tossed out a handful of worn and slightly risqué jokes. Then, halfway into the show, the M.C. announced: “We have a surprise… Please welcome Sophie.” And my blonde, pretty waitress dropped her tray and bounced on stage to sing a brief operatic song, “La Villa Nelle.” For a few seconds the audience was stunned, wondering if she’d gotten lost on her way to a gig at the Santa Barbara Opera, or if perhaps this was some warped Monty Python comedy act? Neither. The big-voiced blonde was local girl Sophie Wingland, one of the Ventura Music Festival’s “Rising Stars,” who will share the limelight with 16year-old violin prodigy (and Harvard researcher) Jourdan Urbach as part of the Festival’s 15th annual program. And as incongruous as it seemed, the audience, which had come for laughs, was captivated. Welcome to the economic reality of classical music. There is no easy way to the top for a 21-yearold opera singer from Ventura, so while trying to carve out an uncommon career, Wingland has to find ways to pay her bills and fund her voice lessons. And while it is unlikely that Maria Callas or Renee Fleming had to sling Mai Tais and chicken wings, the road to success is never easy. (Beverly Sills sang for kids’ birthday parties before becoming the darling of the New York Metropolitan Opera.) Wingland is no exception. She lives with her parents, Mark, a composer and music teacher, and her mother, Kathy, a nurse/midwife, while dreaming of a career on stage. Last May, hometown soprano Nicole Cabell, winner of the Cardiff BBC “Singer of the World” competition, returned to Ventura to perform at the Music Festival. This year Ms. Wingland is hoping for a similar standing ovation from the hometown crowd. Such abundance of talent leads one to wonder if there’s something in the Ventura air that grows wonderful voices. “At less than two years old Sophie could sing melodies on key and had a great sense of pitch,” recalls her father, Mark Wingland. Local voice teacher Linda Ottsen remembers her as a very young girl saying she wanted to star in one of her operas. “She was nine years old at the time, but even at such a young age her voice took on a whole new dimension of power … so resonant it cuts through the orchestra.” She’s always been headstrong, her father says, always a “much older soul than her age.” In between her comedy club waitress stint and applying for a scholarship to the USC Thornton

"My dream is to open my own opera company to showcase new composers and music and get younger people interested in it ... I feel opera needs one big push in a different direction."

School of Music, the lively young soprano sat down at My Florist Café in downtown Ventura, attacked a steaming bowl of oatmeal, and talked about her life of song. She is dressed all in black, her blonde hair pulled back tightly. With blue eyes, finely chiseled features, and a pale complexion, she looks more East Coast prep than California surf queen. Ivor Davis: Was music always part of your life? Sophie Wingland: My dad teaches music at Pacifica High School in Oxnard, and he’s a composer and blues guitarist who also runs a music program at Ventura Methodist Church. So I was brought up with music in my life. Where did you go to school? Elmhurst Elementary, and then Anacapa where I played cello with music teacher Mario Bocalli and was in his choir. Then I went to Ventura High and played cello there. After two years I got my GED, and at 17 I left Ventura and went to the Oberlin Music School in Ohio for four years. It’s a little isolated, and very Midwest for a West Coast girl. How old were you when you started to sing? I was seven and sang with Marcene Jardine’s Ventura County Children’s Master Chorale. I wanted to start a lot earlier. Singing in the choir was my favorite time. I also did a lot of solos. How did your parents feel about your singing? I guess there was an aha! moment. They always knew what I wanted; they have a tape of me when I was four saying, ‘I want to be an opera singer.’ Did friends think you were eccentric for pursuing opera? I was always a bit of an odd fish … but so were my friends who had been playing with me since fifth and sixth grade. They understood classical music and my passion for music. And they came to my concerts. How do you feel about singing at your local church, the venue for the Ventura Music Festival concert? Great. I’ve sung there many times and know the stage, so it’s a bit like performing at home. What can we expect at the concert? I’m doing some Stravinsky—the Anne Trulove aria from The Rake’s Progress—as well as ‘On This Island,’ the song cycle by Benjamin Britten. And a few other pieces.

Is your ambition to sing in all the great opera houses of the wo rld? Honestly, it’s not my life’s dream, although I’m sure a lot of singers would want that. My dream is to open my own opera company to showcase new composers and music and get younger people interested in it. I love new music and have been in several contemporary productions. I feel opera needs one big push in a different direction. v

Sophie Wingland will perform on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church (1338 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura) as part of the Ventura Music Festival. The Art of the Chill Ventura’s Landmark 78—a historical late Victorian house—has seen restaurants come and go, but now CandleLight Kitchen and Bar introduces ultra-contempo rary style to a classic setting.

T

WORDS AND PHOTOS BY JAMES SCOLARI

The ice is perfect. It’s actually better than perfect; it’s double frozen and dispensed in immaculate square-inch cubes that melt more slowly than garden-variety ice, chilling rather than diluting. These frigid little marvels are the product of Cold Draft technology, executed by a very expensive machine that does one thing and does it very well—which proves an apt metaphor for the style and service ethic in play at Ventura’s CandleLight Kitchen and Bar. Located in the historical City Landmark 78—a late Victorian house built on Santa Clara Street in 1912— CandleLight is one of the few places that offers Cold Draft cubes, and has likewise mastered the art of the flourish in its many disciplines. From the ice to the food presentation to the esoteric and deeply romantic stylings, this is a well-tuned hospitality engine, smoothly firing on all cylinders.

The space has undergone a dramatic reimagining that preserves its legacy even as it spins it into a contemporary milieu.

CandleLight is the brainchild of Garner Gerson, whose youthful appearance can be deceiving. Along with the dashing good looks and offhand charm of the consummate host, he carries an impressive pedigree as a fourth-generation restaurateur. The family business began nearly a hundred years ago as a “covered wagon club,” which grew into Malibu’s legendary Calamigos Ranch, the site of countless weddings and events. The Ranch served as a veritable lab for the perfection of the Gerson family coda in style and service, giving birth to numerous successful spinoff ventures, including CandleLight, first in Simi Valley and now in Ventura. Downtown Ventura’s Landmark 78 building has been home to a wide variety of kitchens and taverns over the years, but nothing like this. In its current incarnation the space has undergone a dramatic re-imagining that preserves its legacy even as it spins it into a contemporary milieu that offers the best of both worlds. True to its name, candlelight is ever-present throughout the establishment. Some 400 wicks alight on any given evening, lending an attractive and decidedly romantic hue to both patrons and perspectives—whether in the cozy dining room, the funky eyeball lounge, or the outdoor lounge with its sprawling, 20-person divan, private cabanas, expansive deck, and dramatic torch-lit waterfall. The sweeping restyling of the historic space is CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 3 4

Top to b ottom: Private cabanas and a supersized divan are hallmarks of the hip nightclub; the historical Victorian provides a decidedly old school backdrop to the modern scene; Garner Gerson, owner of CandleLight Kitchen and Bar.

emblematic of Gerson’s fresh approach. “We realized early on that we’re in the business of making memories,” he says. “It’s at the heart of everything we do, and it all needs to be done right.” Acknowledging that this building has been the scene of myriad culinary misfires, he adds, “Unless you reimagine the establishment from the ground up, how can you expect the result to be any different?” The expectations for CandleLight are very different, indeed. With a 25-year lease on the property, this is a business with every intention of making the long haul—and the signs point to a faith that’s well founded, despite prevailing economic notions. “We keep a close eye on the industry and the economy. Sure, times are hard in many places. Look at Campanile, which has been a great success in Los Angeles; their business is down 20 percent over the last year. We just don’t believe it has to be that way. CandleLight in Simi Valley is in its fifth year and we’re actually up 70 percent.” Like its unique style, CandleLight’s menus are an esoteric pleasure, at once sophisticated and casual. Gerson studied at the renowned Apicius Culinary Institute of Florence, and his knowledge of food preparation combined with years of practical restaurant experience enables him to work within the kitchen hierarchy and oversee the front of the house. “First and foremost, this business is an exercise in team building,” he says, noting that it’s a capacity in which successful restaurants typically excel, while failure often leads to a failed venture. “While our businesses are all family-owned, we do have equity partners, and in each case they’re former career members of our staff.” Gerson concludes that the philosophy behind CandleLight was to offer a romantic lounge—a comfortable place for dinner or drinks, dependable for a certain quality of experience. “We imagined a nice place where ladies could wear their new shoes,” he laughs. Whether they succeeded in that ethic can be seen for oneself on any given evening. Simply drop in, with a mind for fine fare and an eye for the conspicuously feminine and decidedly wellturned heel. v

Raising the Roof

By reworking the original structure rather than demoing, local architect William Growdon brought new life and a modern look to a midcentury house in the hills of Ventura. BY MAXINE HURT PHOTOS BY GASZTON GAL

Some houses are a curbside advertisement; you can’t help but notice them as you drive by. Others are subtler, conserving their allure for the lucky few who get inside. The three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath, 2,918-square-foot house at 1940 Terrace Drive in Ventura fits squarely in the latter category. You may glimpse a monumental glass box or a curiously curved steel roof as you drive past, navigating the windy road, but you’ll likely miss the main act. Ventura-based architect William Growdon is just fine with that. It wasn’t extraordinary curb appeal that inspired him to transform a dilapidated mid-century house into this work of modern art. “It’s not about what the house looks like from the street, or if the neighbors think it’s cool,” said Growdon, whose own angular features suggest an architectural origin. “What really inspires me is if I can improve my client’s life and not affect the earth as much as we tend to do.”

The contemporary-styled house, which Growdon began redesigning in 2002, accomplishes both: it allows the owners to lounge indoors yet have the expansive view they wanted, and it incorporates sustainable building techniques that lessen its ecological footprint. The result is a living space with what Growdon refers to as “rhythm.” At the core of this rhythm is the view, spreading out across Ventura to the Santa Monica Mountains, across the channel to Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands. It’s the main attraction until you reach the front door. But once inside, the interior takes over. You walk into a large open space comprised of the living room, kitchen, and dining room. Minimalist in design, the room is ideal for entertaining and opens onto a deck that stretches across the back of the house. Light streams in through large windows and a sliding glass door. You can breathe easily here. Like many modern structures, the house is all about letting the outside in—allowing nature to affect the living space. As Growdon puts it, “If you are in this house and you don’t know what the weather is like outside, there is something wrong.” A cinematic, letterbox-shaped kitchen window frames the view as if it were art. It encourages you to stop, look, and see all of that lush beauty below. According to Growdon, that was part of the big picture. “They didn’t want to have a ton of art, so the idea for that window was to create a piece of art. It’s hard for paintings to beat it.”

A bridge (left) made from recycled plastic bags leads to the main living space (above), where light floods in through efficient low emissivity windows. Venturabased architect William Growdon (right) raised the roof and lowered the floor, creating space and effectively bringing the outdoors in.

In the kitchen (above), bamboo floors and sustainably made cabinets demonstrate how wood can be used more efficiently: a veneer of farm-grown white oak layers over the cabinets’ core of scraps and reused wood; unlike most hardwood trees, bamboo can be regrown in just a few years.

Growdon not only optimized the view, he made efficient use of the original structure, and used sustainable building materials and techniques to lessen the ecological footprint. “One of the hardest things on the environment is upkeep,” he explained, “keeping the home warm, lit, cool… That’s a huge environmental impact.” So when his client approached him about transforming the sunless, oppressive house into an open, loft-style space, Growdon responded with sustainable solutions. The original house was a compartmentalized concrete masonry unit (CMU) with low ceilings and a sagging floor. But instead of demolishing the place, Growdon reworked the original structure, knocking down walls, forging together old and new building materials, lowering the ground floors, and raising the roof. The result is the minimally expanded yet completely reconceived dwelling that stands today.

The windows that so effortlessly frame the view are low emissivity; they help control the climate within the home by managing the heat transfer through the windows via an ultrathin metallic coating. Fixed windows are also used throughout the house, allowing Growdon’s eco-friendly climate strategy to function without human interference. “[Eco-friendly windows] are probably the single most sustainable thing we can do in buildings, because that’s where we have the most heat gain and heat loss,” said Growdon, who also designed a wide band of windows around the top of the walls on the upper floor to allow an influx of natural light. This feature decreases the need for artificial lighting and electricity usage during the day and gives the space an expansive feel. When light is needed, there is a low voltage lighting system that can be controlled from one source in the kitchen. CO N T I N U E D O N PAG E 4 1 APRIL 2009

Growdon didn’t stop at using eco-friendly window and lighting solutions. He also used Trex, a floor material composed of recycled plastic bags, for the entry walkway and the deck. The cabinetry in most of the house utilizes a veneer of farm grown rift-cut white oak, with a fiber board core made from scraps and reused wood. The living room floor is bamboo, and beneath it is a layer of concrete that contains a cost-efficient, zone-controlled radiant heating system. The owners can set a timer to begin heating the ground floor, which in turn heats the upper floors, providing efficient, even heating throughout the day. Some details in the home, although efficient, are more of a design wonder than anything else. Take the home’s ceiling and roof, a low-cost combination of Rolled Steel I-Beams, insulation, and an Arched Steel Pan. “It’s almost like we’ve put a hat on the existing building. Everywhere where there was a roof, I raised it to allow for glass,” said Growdon. The top of the roof, he explained, is a material typically used in commercial buildings as flooring. As a design element, it communicates a modern aesthetic. Looking at the roof, you’d expect to hear a sharp patter when it rains, enough to disconcert the owners, but the oppo-

site is true. “When it rains, it’s quiet,” said Growdon. “It’s actually not loud enough.” Another element of cool is the towering 10by-10 translucent glass box added to the back of the house. The structure, composed purely of glass and metal forming a geometrical pattern, is utilitarian as well as imaginative; it serves as a massive natural light source, efficiently dispersing the gloom that once prevailed. While exploring a house where darkness has been usurped by light and space, I got the sense that I could be airborne—that at any moment the arched roof would slide open and the outdoors would sweep in, lifting me right into that big beautiful view. “It kind of has that soaring feeling,” said Growdon, who planned things that way. And that’s what sometimes happens in a well designed home with a view—you soar. v
