BATTERIES NOT REQUIRED
Four couples. Four homes. Four feature stories.
So clean and even you’d think we set out with this quaditorial approach in mind. And it would have been a good idea, too. That much is obvious now that the last “t” has been crossed and the ink is dry. But it didn’t start out like that. Building this issue was more of an organic process. The editorial lineup shaped itself, announcing its intention suddenly, in a spontaneous burst: “Hey, buddy. Look at me. Four local couples, each with a house that tells their story. Get it?” And there it was: a Homes and Gardens issue with skin and blood and soul. Not just bricks and mortar. Like you, I get forests of throwaway publications in the mail, many of them thick with homes-related nonsense. Perhaps that’s too strong a word—non-sense: of trifling importance or of little or no use. When I’m ready to do some work around the house these advertising vehicles may come in handy. Until then, straight into the recycle bin. Our top priority here in the editorial department is avoiding the trash heap. We’d like to keep our heads above the egg shells and banana peels, the coffee grinds and junk mail, thank you very much. So we scout for stories that not only match an issue’s theme, but that truly engage Ventana readers. As much as possible, we eschew cliché. Take Leslie Westbrook’s article on page 20. To be sure, the Kellaways of Ojai are worthy of a feature in a local lifestyle magazine. Roger is “the greatest unknown pianist in jazz,” according to the Wall Street Journal and many in the jazz cognoscenti. His artist wife, Jorjana, is an equally engaging character, known for hosting fabulous fetes at their home. So what? We could run a standard profile of the couple. Yes, that’d be fine. Easy. Good enough. But what if, considering this issue’s
6

theme, the Kellaways threw one of their house parties and invited us? Invited Leslie, I should say—and her designated driver. And our photographers, Gary and Pierre Silva, who are a walking party anyway. Sounds nice on paper. But from my editorial perch I saw a wildfire of red flags flapping in the Ojai Valley. Logistical cat herding. Coordination between too many people. Beyond the hurdles, though, was the prospect of an article considerably more engaging than your typical magazine fodder. As it turns out, the whole thing went off like smooth jazz. Jorjana confirmed her reputation as a consummate hostess, and the story and photos came in on schedule. Party guests dined and drank and danced. Lampshades stayed on lamps. Stories like this one—indeed, most of the stories we run in Ventana—are not intended as resource tools. Though you may pick up an idea here and there (I got a couple good ones from the Midtown piece on page 13), we’re not out to teach or preach. And we’re certainly not in the business of breaking news. You want the daily scoop? Go online. It’s all there. Quick bytes. Unconfirmed. Here this second, viral the next, rewritten a minute later. While the specter of print publication’s looming demise remains a radioactive topic of conversation in journalism circles, magazine readership continues to grow. The reason, I think, is that there’s no hurry to chug this cocktail of entertainment and information. Sip it. Pick it up, put it down. Come back to it next week or next month. Tell your neighbor you saw them on our pages. This isn’t time-sensitive material. It’s a magazine. Batteries not required. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Proceeds from “The Art of Giving” benefited the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disease Program, a joint venture between the Children’s Center for Cancer & Blood Diseases, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Ventura County Medical Center. The Serra Center’s mission style design and beautiful grounds helped showcase the work of local artists. Guests participated in silent and live auctions while enjoying hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, followed by dinner and entertainment. The NCL Juniors’ annual galas have raised more than $500,000 for the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disease Program. Learn more about the NCL Juniors of Ventura County online at ncljuniorsventura.org.

Al fresco dining in Ventura can be a windy affair, but roll-down shades keep the infamous sea breeze at bay. Tiles on the patio were handmade by the artisans at RTK Studios in Ojai.
Big Ideas for a Small Space
For Michelle and Jeremy Walker, a 600-square-foot bungalow in Midtown Ventura was big enough to house a world of fresh design ideas
W
By Allison Costa Photos by Jim Minics and Kelly Segre “We’ll buy it.” That’s what Michelle and Jeremy Walker said within the first minute of seeing the tiny house with a shaky foundation and colonial pillars in Midtown Ventura. Recalling that day in 2002, Jeremy said with its square footage capping out at 600 square feet, “It would fit in someone’s garage.” But it was near the beach, the price was right, and the Walkers knew they could transform it. In the nine years since then, they have turned the nondescript house into a charming Craftsman style bungalow. In the process they created an oasis for themselves, a place where they can escape their busy lives as co-owners of the landscape design company Blooming Gardens (bloominggardens.biz). Dating to 1927, the structure was originally built to house workers from the offshore oil rigs. Though it had not an ounce of Craftsman design, the Walkers— who had been deeply inspired by the architectural style—set about recreating their property. Craftsman homes were popular during the early part of the 20th century, and the couple endeavored to make the redesign “aesthetically correct to the era.” With Jeremy’s experience as a general contractor and Michelle’s background in landscape design, they’ve got design, construction, and landscaping covered. “We’ve never had anything handed to us on a silver platter,” Michelle said, explaining why they had no problem doing the work themselves.
And with help from the sub-contractors they work with at Blooming Gardens, they were also able to custom create every aspect of the home. Since they spend much of their time in the backyard, last year the Walkers set out to transform it into an outdoor living space. The large covered patio offers a welcoming area with a fireplace and a large solid wood dining table flanked by an Asian-inspired sideboard and an oversize mirror. One of the first things they did was widen the tiny front porch, making it more inviting to the neighborhood and more Craftsman in style. They installed replacement replica siding above the bottom of the window line and shingles below, painting both with colors historically appropriate to the era. Throughout the construction process, the Walkers kept the neighborhood in mind. “We didn’t want to overbuild,” said Michelle. “We wanted to bring it back to life, make it green, and give it character.” Sustainability was among their top priorities for home and garden. They replaced all of the original windows with vinyl double-paned windows and installed LED lighting in the kitchen. Around the patio, a gravel border is part of a drainage system designed to filter out soot and grime before runoff water drains to the street, and eventually to the ocean. Neither of the yards have irrigation systems; all of the plants are drought tolerant. A wall protects the front garden and its flora from the April 2011

drying effects of wind, so only a scant amount of water is required—and only when the weather gets hot. When asked to describe the yard’s style, Michelle smiled: “It’s called no maintenance... with a splash of modern Japanese flare.” Michelle found much of her inspiration for the front yard in Japanese art, something she has had a passion for most of her life. A concrete Japanese lantern, Japanese maples, and a few small pots of bamboo sit amongst grasses and rocks alongside a series of stepping-stones and a trickling fountain. Feng shui—the ancient Chinese system of spatial arrangement—also guided the Walkers’ design. In accordance with feng shui guidelines, the pathway to the house is wider than the front door. A pair of foo dogs, traditionally believed to ward off evil spirits, sits on either side of the entrance. When asked what it was like to design such a small space, Michelle said, “We just made
things work.” Part of the way they did that was by widening many of the doorways and adding mirrors to reflect light and expand the space visually. They even painted their bedroom door the same olive green as the walls to trick the eye and make the kitchen feel larger. In their contemporary kitchen hangs a sign that reads “Que syrah syrah...,” a reference to the couple’s fondness for red wine and their belief that whatever will be, will be. Yet the Walkers are anything but fly by the seat of your pants kind of people. They are planners, with more ideas for their house. Their next project will be to expand upward, building a second floor master bedroom. When asked by friends why they don’t simply move to a bigger house in the hills, the Walkers seem almost shocked. Why would they want to leave? “We’ll just keep growing the house,” Michelle said. v
Top left: No room for a garden? Michelle grows lettuce indoors, utilizing skylights. Above: Efficient use of space is a hallmark of the Walker residence. Again skylights come into play, adding depth to a relatively small patio. Top right: Small doses of Japanese-influenced garden design lend the property a tranquil feeling in spite of limited space. Right: A stereo projection TV is mounted over a hand-carved coral portrait in Michelle and Jeremy Walker’s bedroom. Combining design savvy and modern technology, the couple turned their 600-square-foot Midtown house into a showpiece.

In that we are somewhat particular with whom we work as well as who we have in our home, we were delighted with you and your company and felt very comfortable having your workers in our home. Overall, we are pleased that you not only coordinated the efforts of others but you did so in a timely basis, while at the same time were creative and flexible as well as sensitive and responsive to our needs and desires. Thank you again, we love our new kitchen.”- CKC customer R. McCaslin testimonial- Call (805) 654-1971. Buena Tile + Stone has ensured successful outcomes in Ventura County since 1976. Homegrown Jazz: a Couple’s Composition

APRIL 2011
FULL DISCLOSURE: I have been a friend of Roger and Jorjana Kellaway for more than 15 years and I happen to love them dearly. Roger is one of the most kick-ass jazz pianists on the planet (the Wall Street Journal called him “the greatest unknown pianist in jazz”). He is also quirky and great fun, just like his vivacious redheaded partner of 45 years, Jorjana, an artist in her own right. Jorjana and I first met at a Santa Barbara “jazz house party” where Roger was performing with the lyricist Gene Lees. While waiting in line to use the W.C., we struck up a conversation that has never stopped. Eventually, when he finished tickling the ivories, Roger joined in. Make that Dr. Kellaway, as Roger—along with another jazz legend, Quincy Jones—was recently anointed with an honorary doctorate from The New England Conservatory of Music. Kellaway is a smalltown Massachusetts native and an alumnus of that illustrious institution. The good doctor’s bio of folks he has jammed with reads like a who’s who of the music world. He has performed and/or worked with Elvis Presley, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Joni Mitchell, Henry Mancini, Lena Horne, Bobby Darin, Carmen McRae, Barbra Streisand, and Michael Tilson Thomas. Did I mention Kevin Spacey and Tony Bennett? That’s just the short list. Kellaway also happens to be one of those rare artists who can cross over from jazz to classical. He’s composed a ballet for George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet; orchestral pieces for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the National Symphony, and the New American Orchestra; and a concerto, “Songs of Ascent,” for the New York Philharmonic, with Zubin Mehta conducting. Roger’s list of national accomplishments goes on—including 26 film scores, one (Streisand’s “A Star Is Born”) that garnered an Academy Award nomination. Here at home he has regularly performed at and supported the Ojai Music Festival since 1993, when he and Jorjana moved to the area. (He actually first performed at the Festival in 1973, at the invitation of Michael Tilson Thomas.) And he recorded a lyrical album with the Ojai-based violinist Yue Deng, a classically trained musician who, remarkably, had never played jazz before this LP. Many of Roger’s recordings are done under his own

Top left: The gold record in Roger’s home studio is from “A Star is Born,” 1977. Right, top to bottom: Jorjana’s father, Robert McIntosh, painted much of the artwork hanging at Casa Kellaway. Pre-party, empty dishes await chicken tangine, basmati rice, and organic salads while Roger tickles the ivory. April 2011

label, Kellaway Lightworks, LLC, with Jorjana co-producing. They say behind every great man there is a great woman—or one rolling her eyes! Jorjana McIntosh Kellaway grew up in Los Angeles, the only child of two accomplished artists, both of whom worked for Walt Disney in the early days. With that artistic DNA in her blood, she has created a nurturing nest by decorating their cozy Ojai home with many original oil paintings by her father, Robert McIntosh, a frequent and popular visitor to Ojai, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 94. Ceramic pieces by Jorjana’s well-known uncle, Harrison McIntosh, are also lovingly displayed, along with her own compelling clay sculptures, some inlaid with semi-precious stones. “We moved to Ojai to be close to family in L.A. as they aged,” said Jorjana. “It’s the last place on the planet we thought we’d ever end up, but now there is no place we’d rather be.” Roger riffed on his wife’s sentiments: “We finally found the place. We travel a lot, and it’s such a good feeling thinking about coming

home to paradise. Ojai reminds me of the small town where I grew up. Waban (Massachusetts) had one bank, one market, and one cop. I went back to my roots.” The couple’s wood and glass home is a welcoming place of tranquility. From the moment guests enter through redwood gates, the soft sounds of a fountain and gentle tinkling of outdoor bells create a sense of calm. For evening soirees, like the Moroccan fest the Kellaways hosted in March, candles and small lights glow throughout the garden grounds. The modest home is perfectly suited for two but can accommodate a crowd. Recently, the couple added a teahouse for entertaining in the garden. It’s a heavenly spot for al fresco lunches and pink moment dinners. For the recent Moroccan meal, guests gathered in the teahouse for appetizers before adjourning to the main house and a buffet dinner that included Jorjana’s chicken tangine with basmati rice and a bountiful organic salad. Free-flowing wine loosened the crowd for dancing in the living room after the food had settled.
Above: The teahouse, built by Sergio Cortes, provides an idyllic space for outdoor entertaining. Right: Appetizers were served in the teahouse before guests moved to the main house (top right), a wood and glass affair where Jorjana spread out a buffet of Moroccaninspired dishes. Far right: The aquatic gurgle of a fountain and the gentle tinkling of bells lend the garden a utopian serenity.
Whether Roger is performing in a concert hall or club, or the couple is entertaining friends at their cozy home, you can always count on the Kellaways to create memorable performances. If you happen to be one of the fortunate friends of Ojai residents Barney and Kate Barnhart, you may get to hear Roger tickle, tease, and cajole some amazing sounds out of the ivories when he performs at the couple’s private luncheon party, held annually during the Ojai Music Festival. Next to a Kellaway production, it may well be the hottest ticket in town. v

Michael Bradbury has the hands of a farmer: large and knotted with muscle, cracked and worn from hard work. Standing with him on his rustic Hang ‘em High Ranch in the Ojai Valley, you’d be hard-pressed to think of him as the former District Attorney for Ventura County, a politician and heavy operator. “I was raised in Susanville,” said Bradbury. “I had cows and horses, and when I came to Ventura County, I brought horses with me.” But Bradbury, then and now, is more than a cowboy. He had Pete Wilson’s ear and called Ronald Reagan a friend. His hallway is dotted with photographs: Bradbury with the “Governator”; Bradbury and his wife, Heidi, with Margaret Thatcher; Bradbury with Reagan. Though he made his living prosecuting criminals and representing clients, he still laments the loss of a time when a handshake sealed a business deal. In spite of his storied past, here at the ranch he is first and foremost a husband and father. Hang ‘em High is Michael and Heidi’s combined vision, a 10-acre wonderland with a menagerie of animals, a zoo where dogs, horses, a llama, a pig, birds, sheep, and many others gather in a sort of happy commingling. The Bradbury’s ranch is part retreat, part entertainment, and all home. “It’s all about the kids, really,” said Bradbury. He’s talking about the couple’s three children: Michael Jr., 15, Sean, 13, and Heather, 8. “We wanted a place where they could grow and be,” he said. But this isn’t Neverland. Michael’s career as a prosecutor and his political connections tell a very real story. This is a study in contrasts. The Bradburys, married now for some 20 years, bring together the varied interests of a creative and serious artist and a take-no-prisoners D.A., combining them in a Western retreat. “We wanted to instill certain values in the kids and preserve the Western way of life,” said Michael. Purchased in 1992, the ragged old ranch house was daunting. “When we found the place, our Realtor told us we shouldn’t even take a closer look,” said Heidi. “It was a disaster. There were 20 or 30 people living in the main house, and there’s a guest house out back where there were another dozen living.”
Hang ‘em High Michael Bradbury was a hard-as-nails district attorney—the steely architect of Ventura County’s nationwide reputation for safety. These days, the former D.A. and his artist wife, Heidi, are more concerned with kids than crime, and their sprawling ranch in the Ojai Valley is a Western wonderland—family style By Mark Storer Photos by Gary and Pierre Silva

Michael, however, saw incredible potential. “It was powerful,” he said. “It looked like a Roman bath. There were columns throughout the main hallway and the dining and living rooms. There were marble floors and chandeliers. We spent a lot of time just cleaning it up, getting rid of those columns, redoing everything.” Clean they did. And with an eye for the Old West and an eye for Ojai, Heidi, an artist and painter, began to style the decrepit old ranch into a family home. She and Michael, both horse lovers, bred and raised a few quarter horses. Though three of the females were preparing to foal at the time of this writing, this is by no means a breeding business. For lack of a better term, the Bradburys are simply animal lovers. Their dogs enjoy a high place of esteem, right alongside the llama and the ducks. As we walk the property, two Labrador retrievers flank us, acting as a kind of security detail, but with tongues lolling and happy expressions instead of earpieces and dark glasses. The whole family rides, and the tack room is riddled with favorite saddles and bridles. Only the couple’s eldest son, Michael Jr., has split from the family’s Western roots: there is one black English saddle among the myriad brown Western ones. The house itself is 4000 square feet with mostly wood floors and tile. Heidi’s office, a true artist’s studio, is

strewn with her work, complete and incomplete, as well as an amalgam of dog toys and even a couple of dogs. Sunlight pours through windows into the living and dining areas, dappling a giant wooden archway in the entry hall and dancing across the undulating wood floor. Michael’s office is the office of a country lawyer. There are bookshelves and more pictures, badges from his work as Ventura County’s District Attorney. There is a notable gun collection, from which he removes a beautiful, old Colt revolver for me to hold. Picture windows look out to the backyard deck, shaded by one of more than 50 redwood trees the couple planted. “We planted every tree you see out here,” said Heidi. “We just created what we wanted.” And what the Bradburys wanted was a family home. The place is lived in, not unnecessarily bedecked with trinkets. There are obvious and valuable keepsakes, and certainly Michael and Heidi’s careers are noted with her paintings of Yosemite and his photos of political connections. But pictures of the children are more prominent, and none of the rooms have age restrictions. Heather, the eight-year-old, follows us into Michael’s office without a thought of being shooed away. Directly behind the house, a multi-layered deck descends to a large pool with beach entry and a built-in waterslide—for “kids of all ages,” as Michael said. There’s
Preceding page: Mike and Heidi Bradbury in the aptly-named family room, with kids Mike Jr., 15, Heather, 8, and Sean, 13. Top, from left: The familyoriented ranch home was a shared vision. In the sunroom, an antique fortune-telling scale stands tall amongst cowboy collectibles. The living room showcases a Schimmel piano and Mehl Lawson bronze. Interior adornments range from this saddle by Juan Beltran to Heidi’s greenhouse orchids. Right: The fireplace was handbuilt using rocks from the ranch. Dugan Essick crafted the bar and wraparound bookshelves from Russian walnut burl. Far right: The sunroom is a gathering spot replete with Ranchero Visitadores leather chairs for each family member.

Left, top to bottom: Old saddles and a collection of branding irons hang in the path to the training arena. The pool is a fantasy for “kids of all ages.” Animals like Pork and Beans, a.k.a. Rosie, are treated like family. Above right: The entryway is stocked with antique coach guns and Winchesters. Actor and Western artist Buck Taylor, a family friend, did the painting. The spittoon came from an old Santa Fe railroad car.

even a hidden picnic area in a hollow created by the redwood trees. Down the path from the tack room and workout arena is the kids’ tree house. “I worked pretty hard on it,” said Michael. “I woke up one morning at 2:00 a.m. because it suddenly occurred to me how I wanted it to be. The next day I told Heidi I was going to get the proper tools to frame the walls. When I got back, she’d already done it.” Beyond the tree house, a stroll up the backbone of the ranch leads to a commanding view of the Topa Topa Mountains. “We have our own view of the Pink Moment,” said Michael, referring to Ojai’s evening phenomenon when the sunset turns the stony faces of the Topa Topas pink. As he talks, the horses and the llama come running to the fence to get a quick pet and all three children are playing together near the pasture. Family vacations are something of a tense discussion for Michael and Heidi. Most kids can’t wait to get out and see the world, but the Bradbury kids are content in Ojai. After all, everything they want is here. “That’s what makes me love it all the more,” said Heidi. “When we go on vacation, the kids are the ones who can’t wait to come home. They don’t want to leave.” v

Coastal Eclectic What do you get when you combine a natural sense of aesthetics and an entrepreneurial spirit? For Keith and Samantha Repult, the possibilities were limitless By Andrea Kitay Photos by Gaszton Gal Most days you can find Keith and Samantha Repult at home in Pierpont, on the beach, plotting their next project. Like many of the residents of Ventura County’s beach communities, Keith discovered Pierpont’s narrow lanes as a weekend warrior from Santa Clarita. “We would come down and stay in our weekend home, and the weekends turned into weeks,” he says. “Next thing you know we bought a lot and decided to build a house ourselves.” Impressive from the outside, their new home, fin-
ished a year ago, actually has a dual personality. The exterior’s stained soffits, hand sawn corbels, hand-troweled stucco, and tile roof suggest south of the border ease, even sunny Mediterranean climes. But the interior tells another tale. “Samantha calls it Bohemian,” chuckles Keith as he opens the door and leads me on a tour of the house’s three light and airy floors, stopping to point out the view of the sand from this vantage, and the surf from around the corner. April 2011
Confidently eschewing a decorator’s preference for a main theme, the couple filled the house with items that caught their eyes and won their hearts. But revealing a natural sense of aesthetics, they mixed and blended an eclectic collection of furniture, fixtures, and art into a pleasingly coordinated whole. From the heavy wood front door to the coconut-covered wall and pebble shower in the master suite to the third-story patio where daughters Syanne, 20, and Sahvon, 19, hang out with their friends, the house seems to glow with an oddly tropical warmth. A hand-blown sea glass chandelier casts a mellow glow on the front hall’s wood floors, and radiant heating installed beneath floors throughout the house keeps the interior comfy on cool mornings. As we move through three living rooms, four bedrooms, an office, and three decks, we navigate a maze of protective railings and baby gates. Built before now 16-month-old Jaxon’s arrival, it’s clear who’s running the show these days. No sooner did the house seem finished than the two embarked on another project. The new venture, a quick stroll away from the home, is a cheerful Tommy Bahama style yogurt shop, complete with brightly painted walls and a thatched overhang. A former vegetable stand, it opened in December as the Yogurt Hut. And business seems to be booming. Who is this self-made and delightfully unpretentious entrepreneur? Keith, tall and sandy blond with a goatee, sports the typical Ventura beach uniform: shorts, sandals, and a relaxed shirt. Though he hails from Tennessee (you can still hear a trace of a drawl), he now considers himself a bona fide Californian, having hopped a bus and headed west more than 20 years ago. “I left Memphis with three dollars in my pocket and ended up doing really well for myself,” he muses. “But I think that stems from the fact that I had to make it or break it. It’s either live in the street or make it.” That’s easier said than done. But Keith is a natural salesman, a skill he honed by selling plastics, real estate investments, imported antique cars, and even gold. “I can sell anything,” he says matter-of-factly. “Samantha and I are the perfect partners. Where I’m better at some things, she’s better at others,” he chuckles. “Nothing’s off limits for us, including diapers, dinner, and business.” As it happens, the yogurt shop was Samantha’s idea, and with Keith in agreement the couple went for it. “We love it, and
Darkly-stained strips of wood outline a recessed soffit, cutting the overwhelming whiteness of ceilings and walls. In the adjoining room, plush couches are pure comfort.
The Repults opted not to pursue a single design theme. Instead, using a natural sense of aesthetics they blended eclectic elements into a coordinated whole.

“Samantha and I are the perfect partners. Where I’m better at some things, she’s better at others.”

so does the neighborhood,” he says. “It’s a place for our community to come and hang out. We wanted everyone involved, so when we opened we gave out shirts to the kids at our local elementary, and now we’re having a competition to see who comes up with the best name.” Pierpont being a tight-knit community, it was a natural for these constant entrepreneurs to turn the little 390-square-foot shack on the corner of Pierpont and Seaward into something that would serve the community and their friends. “The corner here has two liquor stores. It needed something more to bring the community together,” says Keith. The place is humming when I stop in for a cup of nonfat vanilla with fresh strawberries. Lactose-free and nonfat varieties are offered alongside a peanut butter/chocolate blend and a sumptuous self-serve bar with and fresh fruit toppings. Like the Repult’s eclectically-designed house, their yogurt stand was a somewhat impromptu affair: the product of wise decisions made in the heat of the moment. “We didn’t know anything about yogurt when we started,” laughs Keith, “but what we’ve discovered over the years is that there’s nothing we can’t learn to do.” v The Yogurt Hut, 1038 S. custom MADE
This month I’m featuring a design that my right hand guy, John Muscarella, did for a client. These earrings were designed specifically for a pair of marquise sapphires and done in our proprietary 19K white gold. The sapphires are a beautiful deep blue. As you can see, the earrings are completely articulated so that they move and sparkle with the slightest motion of the head. Please come and see our collection of great earrings - and if we don’t have it, we’ll make it!
