A NATURAL PERSPECTIVE

ore people than ever are planting gardens. Rooftop gardens, tower gardens, small-space edible gardens. Seed sales boomed in 2009 after the economy crashed and have continued at a steady pace. But I don’t believe this flourishing interest can be attributed exclusively to the economic ramifications of the recession. A garden provides more than affordable sustenance; it offers therapy, and hope. Plants can remind us to slow down and breathe. Dare I say, to stop and smell the roses. And in today’s lightning-paced world, we need that more than ever. On page 16 we visit the home garden of Midge Stork, one of the main sparkplugs behind the Ventura Botanical Gardens project. Our original idea was something of a how-to article (in this case, how to maximize a small space), but writer Amber Lennon shifted course to focus instead on the therapeutic benefits of digging in the dirt. “I lose myself,” Stork told her. “It’s a wonderful outlet because you don’t think about anything else.” A profound comment, considering the tragedies that have befallen Midge and her family. Prior to this article I wasn’t aware of those tragedies, but her words reaffirm my beliefs about the power of plants, and nature in general. Indeed, those fleeting moments of quietude in her garden must provide invaluable solace, a close-tothe-land therapy session of sorts. In the Upper Ojai Valley, Margot Griswold lives about as close to the land as you can get without sleeping alfresco. A restoration ecologist with a background in farming, she specializes in native habitat restoration and has created a home that fits

into the local landscape rather than sealing her off from it. But we didn’t know all that when we contacted John Davis, AIA, of Ojai-based Davis Brown Architecture. We were simply drawn to the home’s clean-lined style, and were looking for a contemporary showpiece in the area to round out this issue’s geographic inclusiveness—four distinct corners of the county: La Conchita, Santa Rosa Valley, Ventura, and Ojai. The pitch for the La Conchita article sprang out of a casual conversation some six years ago. A neighbor of Bill Malis and Bonnie Kelm mentioned (to a very close friend of mine, coincidentally) that she wished “this magazine” (“Which magazine?” he asked) would feature their art-filled home. I often respond to pitches by telling the sender we’ll reach out if and when we find an editorial spot. I click “send” knowing that many of them will perceive that as a brush-off. But it’s not, as evidenced on page 36. We do this every month, and have for nearly a decade. It’s a tough business on both the editorial and advertising fronts. Stress levels run high, particularly when we’re on deadline. But then I see something like my kids marveling at the magic of an avocado pit sprouting roots in a glass of water. Or squealing in joy as they pluck a snack from the tangled riot of a sugar snap pea vine. I watch them stop their play, ever so briefly, to smell the roses. And I let everything else go. THEIR BIG FINISH How a local couple took a bite out of the Big Apple. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOS BY MICHAEL MOORE IT’S NOT OFTEN THAT A VENTURA COUNTY resident appears on a gigantic billboard in New York City’s Times Square. But when Dian Van Patten Singh, a Santa Rosa Valley homeowner, became a finalist in a Black + Decker home remodeling contest called “Your Big Finish” a few months ago, that’s exactly what happened. Not once, not twice, but five times. “When I won for the first room remodel, I sent in another image, then another, and another. They selected all of the rooms I remodeled, except for the two guest rooms,” she said. While she didn’t win the grand prize of $10,000 cash, she did earn some serious bragging rights. Eleven years ago, Dian and her husband, Jai (pronounced Jay), bought an East County house with tran-

quil views of the mountains between Santa Rosa Valley and Thousand Oaks. In 2013, the couple put their house on the market and moved to Tennessee. They ended up staying less than a year, and when their Ventura County house didn’t sell they returned and decided to re-do the interiors, which she then entered in the contest. Pretty and vivacious at age 63, Dian has two grown daughters from her first marriage and three grandchildren in college. She and Jai will celebrate their 15th anniversary this month. Clearly, the 23-year age difference has worked, and that’s due in part to Dian’s boundless energy. She is never boring. Her list of professions, past and present, includes actress/model, talent agent, paralegal, Realtor, massage therapist, game show participant, }}

and interior designer. Jai, a biochemical engineer who appears as an expert witness in automobile accident cases, is currently working on his third master’s degree. Their tastes in interior design were quite different when they first married (he favored traditional, dark furnishings; Dian leaned toward modern, light, and spacious), but over the years they have learned how to combine their preferences. They are both also quite adept at scoring good deals. “As long as she is happy, I am happy,” Jai admitted diplomatically. When they bought the Tudor-style house in this bucolic stretch of unincorporated Camarillo, the style was “very country.” Every room was wallpapered (“duckies and chickens in the kitchen”), and the wooden floors, trim, and fireplace mantle were made of honey oak. Horse saddles hung from the bannister. They ripped out the carpeting, installed additional wood flooring, and stained the wood dark, adding a wood medallion in the foyer for a more elegant look. Dian, who “loves the color gray,” carried that muted tone—accented with black, white, and creams—throughout the house. They redid the kitchen, put in a glass front door, and installed a wrought iron bannister. Plush new furnishings and modern art added comfort and style. Dian painted the kitchen cabinets white and changed the hardware four times before settling on what she liked. The two guest rooms sport a ton of pizzazz. “Dolly’s Room,” with its “French seamstress” theme, was designed around an antique treadle sewing machine and

includes a mannequin and sparkly bed linens. “Ready to go back to the Sixties?” Dian teased as she opened the door to the second guest room. Inside, a flashy disco ball lamp rotated and drawings of Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and John Lennon hung on the walls alongside Dian’s original tickets to the 1968 musical “Hair.” The grounds are large and informal, with five resident goats—Thelma & Louise, Caspar the Friendly Goat, Tammy, and Houdini—all of whom have been part of the family for nearly a decade. (The couple purchased them in the Santa Rosa Valley as kids to clear the weeds.) No stranger to the world of celebrity, Dian has played bit parts in T.V. shows and commercials, and was recently a contestant on “Let’s Make A Deal.” Dressed as a goat, hooves and all, she was thrilled when host Wayne Brady said she had the most original costume he had ever seen on the show. “That’s worth more than the final big deal,” she said. Dian also won a “Best Dressed Seat Filler” prize on The People’s Choice Awards some years ago. She learned about the Black + Decker remodeling contest on her favorite channel, HGTV (Home & Garden Television), and photos of her interior handiwork appeared on the electronic billboard in Times Square for nearly a month in late 2014. She may not have won the $10,000 grand prize, but Dian wasn’t particularly upset. “I wouldn’t have wanted to pay the taxes on the prizes,” noted the eternal optimist with a smile. v

GROWING A BACKYARD EDEN

AT HOME WITH VENTURA BOTANICAL GARDEN CO-FOUNDER MIDGE STORK. BY AMBER LENNON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAREN PARKHOUSE SOME VISIONS ARE A LIFELONG CULTIVATION. Others appear to spring up suddenly when the conditions are just right. Midge Stork’s life has been full of both, and in the solace of her garden is where all her good ideas have grown. She and her husband, Dave, bought their Ventura home in 1959 as newlyweds, and the couple has spent the last 56 years there nurturing children, gardens, and an impressive list of community projects and organizations.

“You look for a need, and you fill it,” Midge commented while plucking dried petals from a camellia bush in her backyard. My time with her was punctuated by her spontaneous gardening—hands constantly tending leaves, buds, and blossoms. Like anything that is second nature, I don’t even think she knew she was doing it. She casually led me on a tour of her garden, admiring new apricot leaves and garden beds brimming with herbs and veggies. “We really emphasize the indooroutdoor aspect,” she commented, pointing to the panel

of kitchen windows that separates the dining table from the blue blossoms of a sprawling plumbago outside. Just walking by, you’d never know that a personal Eden is flourishing in the backyard of her tract home. It’s a perfect representation of Midge Stork’s achievements— understated yet abundant. Between the artichokes and a trellised apple tree, she mentioned that her home will be part of Ventura Botanical Gardens Spring Garden Tour on April 25, 2015, as a fine example of maximizing small spaces. Midge is one of the nonprofit’s cofounders, and she and Dave have toured botanical garden all over the world. While taking in the beauty of the Olbrich Botanical Garden in Madison, Wisconsin, Midge turned to her husband and asked, “Why can’t we do this in Ventura?” So she and a handful of passionate volunteers gathered under the stars at the oversized table in Midge’s garden and formulated a plan to create Ventura Botanical Garden. “It’s been such a miracle,” said Midge. “In the first two years, 900 people gave us $100, and we had nothing to tell them other than we had a vision!” In 2009, a few years into the development of VBG, the Storks lost their son, who—like his parents—was an avid plant lover. Through this tragedy, the Storks’ vision became even more meaningful, and their commitment to the project grew. With tremendous volunteer effort and the help of the Rotary Club, the Ventura Endowment Fund, and generous donations from supporters, the Ventura Botanical Garden was opened to the public in October of 2012. The demonstration trail is lined with over 150 native plant species and crisscrosses the Grant Park

hillside above the Ventura County Courthouse, offering spectacular views of Downtown Ventura and the coast. Many plans are in the works, including the development of the largest Chilean garden outside of Chile, three bridges, and more nature trails. On April 30, the VBG Board of Directors will go before the Ventura City Council to secure an extended land lease. “Things are going to be transformed through this celebration we hope to have on the 30th,” Midge said. About halfway through our garden tour, she sat down on a bench beneath an enormous avocado tree and joked that she limits how much time she spends here because the falling fruit could “really hurt.” It’s an understandable concern, especially for someone who has been impacted by Traumatic Brain Injury, or TBI. The Storks’ daughter was in a nearfatal car accident when she was 17, and in the years of recovery that followed,

Midge and Dave recognized the need for a TBI resource and rehabilitation center. So they created the Brain Injury Center of Ventura County (braininjurycenter.org), which has assisted thousands of people since opening in 1998. “We never dreamed we’d have trauma. We never dreamed of the botanical gardens. But through life, you just change,” Midge reflected. “Out of every tragedy, there are wonderful things that happen. You just have to live long enough to find out what they are.” As Midge continued to identify the various gems in her garden—fig, pear, poinsettias, gardenias, roses, plumeria—her hands touched each one, as if the stories of her life were held in every stem, flower, and fruit. “[Gardening] is therapy,” she said. “I lose myself. It’s a wonderful outlet because you don’t think about anything else except the bugs and the dirt. I always said I loved dirt.” v

hen Bonnie Kelm and Bill Malis first considered moving to La Conchita in 2002, friends were wary. The landslide of 1995, which leveled nine homes, was still fresh in everyone’s memory. And the low-key, distinctly unpretentious seaside hamlet was a far cry from the tony streets of Santa Barbara. But after visiting the property that would become Casa Makai, the couple fell in love with the house, the town, and the ocean just steps away. “We’ve always been drawn to the beach,” Malis, a sculptor, says. The couple met in Columbus, Ohio, when Kelm, an art historian

and professor, became president of the board of Community Initiatives for Fox Cities Artisans, a nonprofit that helped artists find work through community projects. “I discovered I had this skill I never knew I had,” she recalls. That association helped forge a successful career as a museum director…and introduced her to Malis, who had been selected to create a sculpture to commemorate African American history. “I was dirt poor, broke and in debt,” Malis remembers. Nevertheless, “a romance blossomed. We’ve been partners ever since,” Kelm says of their 37-year marriage. The couple traveled far and wide as Malis pursued his art and }}

Kelm hit the lecture circuit (she’s a well known George O’Keeffe scholar) and directed museums in Ohio, Virginia, and Miami. When she was tapped for the University Museum at UCSB, they were delighted to realize a lifelong dream of living near the ocean. La Conchita, with its laidback vibe, small-town feel, and independent spirit was the perfect community for them. Kelm and Malis call their home Casa Makai (makai means seaward in Hawaiian), and the beach is very much a presence. Malis often works with driftwood and other flotsam that washes up on the coast, and Casa Makai is filled with his rustic renderings: intricate wall hangings, sculptures, and furnishings. The work of numerous other artists live here, too—a testament to the globetrotting tendencies of two creative professionals. Woodcuts by Hawaiian artist Dietrich Varez, driftwood sculptures by Barbara Chavous (a former colleague and friend from Ohio who was a major influence on Malis), paintings by Ralph Auf der Heide, and collages from renowned Chinese painter Hung Liu are peppered among folk and indigenous art. But it’s Malis’s original creations that speak most eloquently of the couple’s love for the bounty that the sea—and time—provide. A large driftwood grandfather clock (called “Killing Time” in homage to its resemblance to a guillotine) graces the downstairs sitting room. Driftwood stools and tables are a familiar motif as well; Malis has a particular eye for “legs” he finds on the beach. The charming “Bonnie’s Marbles” is carved from wooden flotsam that vaguely resembles a hand; Malis sanded and polished it, then filled it with glass marbles as a gift for his beloved. For all their funkiness, there’s something both elegant and apropos about these pieces: humble but not demure, dignified in their simplicity and aged beauty. “These are the survivors,” Malis says of his stressed wood creations. “They’ve been knocked down, torn apart, leached by the water, washed up. All superfluous material has been stripped away. What’s left are all these beautiful pieces that want to be shown.” Kelm feels similarly about vintage jewelry. As a child, she was fascinated by the Ancient Egyptian practice of hiding charms and other treasures in mummy wrappings, and would sometimes stash special items of her own. “I’ve been hoarding little pieces of stuff forever,” she says. She also inherited numerous antique pieces from her mother and maternal aunts, who were all avid jewelry collectors. She parlays these and other objects into her own art, available online as Bella Kaye, which is part decorative, part contemplative, and all beautiful. “A lot of my

pieces are assemblages,” she explains. “You can take them apart. Every creation is an assemblage from various other pieces.” This gift for breathing fresh life into discarded items extends outside, too. Old doors and scrap wood are fashioned into workbenches. Cedar siding—once earmarked for the dump—becomes a beautiful set of doors for a shed. Casa Makai’s backyard is nothing like what it was when Kelm and Malis moved in, but almost nothing in it is new, either. It’s filled with bricks, pavers, fencing, and other castoffs from neighbors’ remodel projects, as well as a variety of Malis’s beloved beach detritus: driftwood, stones, large logs that washed up after the storm (and subsequent landslide) of 2005. In the sculptor’s hands, they’ve all become beautiful elements in a well-composed and serene landscape. And not a single piece seems out of place. The somewhat narrow backyard is dominated by a peaceful pond, built with long, slim lines to take advantage of the area’s unusual shape. A freestanding shed adorned with those handsome cedar doors and driftwood handles seems more like fine cabinetry than humble outdoor storage. A large side yard has become a meditation garden, where a carpet of stone and pavers suggest a Japanese rock garden. Old wood planks are fashioned into a comfortable bench for contemplation; the Buddhist shrine makes a lovely focal point. “There’s kind of an Asian feel to a lot of my art,” Malis muses. “I don’t know where that comes from—maybe a past life.” But the most memorable and whimsical feature here is the Ode to Sunglasses, a collaboration between Kelm and Malis. Beneath the glass-topped table lies a diorama of vintage jewelry and sunglasses, arranged in a spiral, that have been left behind or thrown out. Butterfly tiles—three along one edge, five along the other—decorate the sides. The configuration speaks to Malis on an intellectual and emotional level. “Three is a good arrangement,” he explains. “Three and five relate to Fibonnaci’s number and the golden mean. Flower petals, music, octaves, the spiral helix—they all include ratios of threes and fives. It’s hardwired into our DNA.” To the average visitor, this philosophical concept may or may not make sense. But what is indisputable is the harmony engendered by Malis and Kelm’s landscaping. You don’t have to understand the tranquility to appreciate it. And that sense of balance stems directly from the partnership of two artists in perfect synch with each other, and with the old, used, and imperfect objects that give life to the space around them. v

BACK TO THE LAND A Perfect Fusion of Indoor-Outdoor Living BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOS BY RUDY LOUPIAS “I LOVE BEING OUT HERE. I LEARN A LOT,” says restoration ecologist Margot Griswold. We are standing side by side, gazing over a field of native grasses and blooming elderberry trees. Birdsong and the dizzying fragrance of orange blossoms fill the air, as early spring is beginning to take shape in her Upper Ojai sanctuary. A dozen years ago when the California native and Central Valley farm girl first set foot on the 10-acre property she now calls home, she didn’t enter the house—she walked the trails. That was it. She knew then and there that this piece of land was the one she’d been searching for. “I didn’t care what the house looked like,” she admits, motioning to the landscape. “I knew I

would be out here all the time.” Indeed, Griswold thrives in the natural environment. She still walks those sage-scented trails every morning, observing the wildlife and everchanging vistas. She is “letting nature reclaim the land,” while she gently shapes the process to achieve the goals of fire safety combined with her own aesthetic sensibility. Over time, the house, like the landscape, would also change to reflect her goals. Slowly but steadily, Margot began to restore the land to its native state, an ongoing process. But modern humans cannot live on land alone, and the homeowner eventually decided to remodel the house to suit her desires as well. She approached }}

the house renovation much like land restoration: an undertaking that requires considerable thought and time. It comes as no surprise that Margot wanted to create as much of an indoor-outdoor experience as possible in her living quarters. And after a stunning renovation, the house seems to be gaining equal footing. “I spend a lot more time in the house now that it’s been remodeled,” she says, “especially in the summer.” A major direction given to her architects, John Davis and Lorrie Brown, of Ojai-based Davis Brown Architecture, was being able to gaze upon the surrounding landscape and its wild inhabitants. Remodeling the 2,500-square-foot house, dubbed “Bear Creek,” and adding a screen-enclosed “Summer House” was a process that slowly evolved as the architects learned more about their client—who is also their neighbor. The team created a bright and airy abode for the sort of homeowner who “mostly lives in jeans” and prefers a home office to a huge walk-in closet. Margot’s cocoon holds treasures: bird nests, seedpods, and other gifts from Mother Nature, all lovingly displayed on counters and tabletops. Salt crusts from Owens Lake, where Margot has spent the last 14 years working on a restoration project, are preserved in glass-top specimen cabinets. A huge American crow’s nest that her brother recovered when it blew down in a windstorm some 20 }} years ago is an eye-catching conversation piece.

Rainwater is collected in a subterranean cistern, a solar hot-water heater and high-efficiency heat pump reduce energy consumption, and a new field array of photovoltaic panels offsets the remaining electrical usage. Almost all materials removed from the house during the remodel were reused or recycled.

The architects suggested opening up the interior, as well as raising and establishing clean ceiling lines (the exterior’s many complex roof lines morphed from six to two shed roofs). They created a spacious, contemporary kitchen, and incorporated a former porch into the new living room. Stellar views add to the peaceful character of a guest room, while a fiddle stand in another small room hints at Margot’s musical side. The master suite, which can be closed off from the rest of the house, includes a painting studio. When Margot said she wanted a sleeping porch, the architects designed her master bedroom with corner glass windows leading to a wrap deck and hot tub, both of which take advantage of the views. Shortly after the house tour, we donned hats and walked the land that first lured Margot to Ojai. She has worked diligently with land steward Lorenz Schaller for the past decade, and seems to know every plant, bird, and critter in her realm. Lawns have been replaced by native grasses that wave and dance like graceful beds of seaweed. Breezes move freely through the Summer House, a poolside retreat for naps, meals, chats with friends, and sunset viewing. Gold finches pause to quench their thirst at one of Margot’s drippers. “I’m a workaholic, but the Summer House offers a place for me to feel lazy,” she says. With few exceptions, wild animals are welcome on the property. There is no outdoor lighting, “so the owls can come in.” Margot lets rattlesnakes, gophers, and foxes deal with the rats (no poisons here). As we stroll the grounds, she rattles off more names of plants and birdlife: Acourtia, yerba santa, popcorn flower, native peonies… “Oh, look, there’s a northern flicker!” she says enthusiastically, pointing out the migratory woodpecker. “This is what I love,” she concludes, “letting this happen on my time and nature’s time. This is my chance to do it my way, without any interference.” Some spots on earth seem to possess an almost holy presence. This is one of them. As I leave, gifted with lemons and oranges from Margot’s fruit orchard, I feel a wondrous sense of calm. “I am so lucky to be here,” Margot reiterated several times during our conversation.
