MARINA DEL REY
Marina del Rey is the largest man-made harbor in the nation. It is on unincorporated land owned and managed by the County of Los Angeles. The Marina offers several yacht clubs with boating events; outdoor concerts in Fisherman’s Village during the summer, and Concerts in the Park at Burton Chace Park during the summer. Other activities include bird watching, Los Angeles County Outdoor Adventures, harbor kayaking, surf kayaking, “Old Fashion Day” in the park, typically in late July; and the famous Fourth of July Fireworks Show, with best viewing from Chace Park and Fisherman’s Village, although any water view location is good, www. chacepark.com/events.htm. Marina del Rey activities include sightseeing tours, with local companies providing pre-packaged tours picking you up at your hotel. Many of the tours include Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Universal Studios/Hollywood, Disneyland, San Diego, the J. Paul Getty Center, movie stars homes, Malibu celebrities, hop on/hop off double-decker fun tours, nighttime tours, a grand tour of Los Angeles, Sea World, and the Queen Mary. Cruise and charter companies, offering harbor, coastal, sunset cruises, public dining and cocktail cruises, weddings, corporate events and celebrations of all kinds are available. For onthe-water experiences, there are rentals that
include sailboats and power yachts. Small rental and private, skippered charters are available. Charter and boat rental companies include Blue Pacific Boating, Blue Water Sailing, Captain Alex’s Paradise Bound Yacht Charters, FantaSea Yachts and Yacht Club, Gondolas D’Amore, Hornblower Cruises and Events, Marina Boat Rentals, Marina del Rey Sportfishing, Marina Sailing, and Tiki Mermaid Charter Yachts. The UCLA Marina Aquatic Center offers extensive instruction in sailing, rowing, kayaking, surfing and windsurfing, including classes and harbor excursions designed for short-term visitors. Sport fishing with daily fishing trips, no experience necessary, and tackle and bait supplied are available as well. A diving company with capacity for a maximum of six passengers will visit local wrecks, reefs, and Southern Channel Islands. They also offer coastal cruises and whale watching charters. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary provides public classes on boating skills, seamanship, sailing fundamentals, basic and advanced coastal navigation and more. They also conduct free vessel safety checks. The summer weekend waterbus operates summer weekends, holidays and concert nights, shuttling between Burton Chace Park, Fisherman’s Village, Marina Beach and Waterfront Walk. Information on these tours, charters, rentals and
Santa Monica Pier offers two famous attractions – the Ferris Wheel and the Carousel, along with the amusement park and the Playland arcade. The Heal the Bay Aquarium, located below the pier, provides entertainment and learning opportunities for children and adults alike. The Twilight Concert Series is provided by the City of Santa Monica, and is now in its 28th year. Beginning July 5, concerts are scheduled on July 12, July 19, July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16, August 23, August 30, and September 6, www.twilightseries.org/lineup.
trict is known for its Ocean Front Walk – the Boardwalk – and is peopled with artists, street performers, Tarot card readers and fortune tellers, performers, music and vendors of numerous products. Venice Pier, at the end of Washington Boulevard, attracts sun-seekers, surfers, swimmers, people who roller blade, and those renting bicycles to ride down the bike path toward Santa Monica or to Dockweiler Beach and beyond. Numerous movies and TV shows have been filmed at Venice Beach, such as “Speed” with Sandra Bullock, “Baywatch,” and documentary films like “The Lords of Dogtown,” chronicling modern skateboarding.
Muscle Beach - The original Muscle Beach was made famous by Jack LaLanne, health guru, TV and international fitness celebrity. It was the place for bodybuilders and weight lifters, airborne tumblers, wrestlers, and Hollywood stars, and has been described as the epicenter of the fitness revolution. Some of the celebrities that made Muscle Beach famous, according to musclebeach.net/smonica are Steve “Hercules” Reeves, international movie star and champion bodybuilder; Joe Gold, founder of Gold’s Gym and World Gym, a pioneer weightlifter, bodybuilder and star volleyball player; George Eiferman, “Mr. Universe”; Bert Goodrich the first “Mr. America”; Russ Saunders, celebrated gymnast and stuntman for Gene Kelly; Pudgy Stockton, pioneer woman weightlifter and bodybuilder; and dozens more.
For dining and shopping, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, named after Venice founder Abbot Kinney, has a mix of casual and fine dining, art galleries, bars, and eclectic shops. On the first of every month, First Friday is celebrated with businesses staying open late, food trucks of all types providing a variety of culinary treats, and thousands of people joining in the vibrant energy of the area. The Venice Canal Historic District, located between Venice and Washington boulevards, harkens back to their Abbot Kinney days as he commissioned man-made canals built in 1905 as part of his “Venice of America” concept. Beautiful homes grace the canals, and walking down the sidewalks is like going back in time.
Tourists would flock to Muscle Beach, hoping to see someone famous, or just to watch the amazing competitions. Joe Wheatley has been
