EDIT LIFE

I

’ve seen the Mona Lisa and the murals of Mexico, the Great Wall and wonders of the world, but the oily scrap art of a tire repairman left a deeper imprint on my soul. Art affects everyone differently. This is one of the few truisms about art. Among the rabble lined up at the Louvre there’s sure to be a sourpuss or two. And who’s to say they’re wrong in their derisiveness? I may cringe at the commercialism of Kinkade, but a million or so others swoon over the “Painter of Light.” So if the unpolished work of an unknown artist charms me more than Mona’s smile, that’s my prerogative. But let’s backtrack and circle around to make sense of such a ludicrous analogy. I used to teach English to a Spanish-speaking kid called Brunito, or Little Bruno. His father (Big Bruno) was my mechanic, a straightforward working-class guy, all callused hands and grease-stained canvas. Bruno worked with his brother Hector, whose main job was repairing tires. Patches, plugs, retreads: if your tires needed attention, Hector was the guy to go to. And I did, frequently. I got to know the brothers well but never had an inkling that the monosyllabic tire repairman was something of a pueblo Picasso, a genuine artist—and by that I mean he was compelled by his nature, driven by something internal, to create art: in his case, mixed-media pieces made with reclaimed steel belts, burned rubber, and twisted nails.

6

|

editor's note.indd 1

ventana

|

Mainly nails. Pulled from flat tires, of course, and lovingly collected decade after decade. Hector’s art is not for show, and it’s certainly not for profit. (He charges about three bucks to repair a flat but says he “wouldn’t sell his art for anything in the world.”) In that sense, it is a true representation of the creative process—art created solely for the sake of creation. None of his work has the historical significance of a Picasso, of course, or the mad genius of a Van Gogh, the technical brilliance of a da Vinci. Still, the artist’s purity of motive is a thing of beauty. The other day while whittling down my to-do list I came to a jarring realization: all my chores were, in a sense, edits— from thinning out my overgrown garden to thinning out my bloated closet. Indeed, the very act of whittling down that list was an editorial process. As life clutter accumulates, daily existence becomes a battle to prevent our personal weeds from smothering our potential flowers. A cleanly edited life moves more efficiently; it flows. And while I’m not suggesting a return to the cave, I do think the complexity of modern life precludes many of us from realizing our potential. Simplicity opens the door for one’s true self to emerge. As Picasso put it, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Art, Art Everywhere

From stenciled ceilings to Fauvist paintings, Ojai’s Rancho del Oso brims with brilliant hues and the expressive imprints of an art-fueled family. By Leslie A. Westbrook

ack in spring of 1939, guests were invited to the opening of Arroyo Del Oso Guest Ranch to experience “Hospitality, Rest, Peace and Contentment” under the spreading oaks at the foot of Ojai’s majestic Topa Topa Mountains. Owners Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Harvey offered lunch for a dollar and a four-course dinner for just 50 cents more. A swimming pool, horseback riding ($2.50 per day for a saddle horse to explore the back country), tennis, and badminton, as well as tree-shaded patios and gardens cooled by fountains, added to the creature comforts on the then-160-acre parcel. The Harvey’s son, Thad, crooned songs of the day, and there was plenty for guests to see—like Mrs. Harvey’s collection of cacti and succulents, or her pet birds:

pheasants, finches, lovebirds, canaries, and a parrot. If you stayed too long or drank something stronger than the Jersey milk on the menu, you could even bed down for the night. The rate for a cottage with shower was, at the most, 12 dollars per day for two people on the American Plan; a deluxe cottage or room with bath was considerably less. Rumor has it that Hollywood celebrities like Clark Gable trekked to the retreat. But five years after it opened, the guest ranch was shuttered. From that time on it became a private residence, although the current owners and longtime caretakers, John and Nancy Whitman and their family, know a thing or two about hospitality. These days, all is quiet on the home front surrounded by rock walls, both old august 2013 | ventana | 13

and new, and gardens, both wild and planted. The original stone arched entrance still welcomes visitors—only now they step into a hallway lined with artist Nancy Whitman’s lyrical and colorful paintings of local landscapes, both real and imagined, scenes of parties, flowers, and birds painted in a whimsical manner reminiscent of Matisse and other Fauvist artists from last century. The Whitmans purchased the property (reduced to 10 acres), tweaked the name to Rancho del Oso, and moved in “the day after Christmas in 1969,” recalled their son Fred, a sculptor who was just 13 at the time. “Once the school bus dropped us off, we turned out backs on the rest of the world. We built dams in the creek, created fishing and swimming holes, and rolled big boulders off the mountain.” All five of the Whitman children are now grown, and John and Nancy, married for 60 years, seemingly enjoy the solitude of their canyon retreat and family compound. The rest of the brood includes Charlie, Mark, Andy, and daughter Carrie, along with their various spouses and grandchildren, all of whom have

memories of their own. The walls of the two-story house are covered with matriarch Nancy’s original acrylic paintings. Three bedrooms and three bathrooms are located downstairs, and a charming original master bedroom and bath aerie are up a steep staircase in the original part of the house. The den, with resident stuffed moose above a stone fireplace, was once carpeted wall-to-wall in pink, Nancy’s favorite color, and she stenciled the ceiling using the same Fauvist sense of vibrant hues. The kitchen evokes a feeling of happiness, with cabinets painted salmon (few surfaces escape Nancy’s brush) and a table large enough to accommodate friends and family. The formal dining room features original ceiling stenciling and light fixtures, and a small library has a hidden bar behind a bookshelf door. A stunning great room was recently added, with plenty of windows that bring the outdoors in and a patio where son Fred’s marble sculptures hold court. Nancy’s studio is a charming, rustic cottage with a stone fire-

place built by John and their sons from rocks collected on the property. If you’d like to experience it, and the rest of Rancho del Oso, save the dates of October 12 and 13 for the 2013 Ojai Studio Artists Tour. “We have to kick people out; they don’t want to leave!” laughs John Whitman, referring to the rash of visits from art aficionados, fans, and looky-loos. Indeed, I hated to end my recent Sunday afternoon visit, which stretched into early evening. Good company and a dinner of homemade pasta (from son Andy), frosty beer, and hot fudge sundaes made for a delightful respite. The Native Americans who once used this canyon as a retreat obviously knew a thing or two. Like the guests of yes-

teryear, I experienced that promised “Hospitality, Rest, Peace and Contentment”—as well as some quality time in the studio, painting with Nancy. The next time I visit my friends the Whitmans, I’d like to search for arrowheads or fishing holes from days gone by. Especially if they are willing to honor the original rate card price of $7.50 per night. v For more information on Nancy Whitman’s art, go to nancywhitman.com or call 805.525.3551. The 30th Annual Ojai Studio Artists Tour will take place October 12-13. Details at ojaistudioartists.org.

DreamWeaver Artist Christine Morla comes full circle, lacing her local upbringing and Filipino roots together in kaleidoscopic patterns that document her life—and express Oxnard’s unique spirit of place. By Mark Storer Photos by Karen Parkhouse

C

hristine Morla’s art is tactile and lucid. Weaving strips of found paper with painstaking precision and designing art that, in this case, is inspired by the landscapes of her home in Oxnard, Morla creates vistas of shape and color in three-dimensional outlines, some placed on panels, some placed directly on walls. The weaving is a process, a long one, but like the story of her life and work, it flows and is made inextricably stronger by the challenges faced, the obstacles overcome. Her latest installation at the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard, Kaleidoscopic Gaze, is a patterned blend of these designs, morphing into sky and sea, ground and flower, fences and streets. It’s Morla’s life in patterns and bits of finely tuned surprises found on each wall. What’s remarkable is that her time consuming artwork is but a small part of the story. Morla is a teacher—and she’s just as passionate about sharing art and design as she is about creating it. A full-time professor

2x 0x | | v evnet na tnaan a| a|u gAuusgt u2s0t1 2 3013

of art at Oxnard College and currently the gallery director and chair of the art department, her resume is thick with testaments to a career of production and work. Her passions are family and home, and a spirit of place is palpable in her work. “I grew up in south Oxnard. I’m a home girl, went to Channel Islands High School,” Morla said. “I graduated from art school at Loyola Marymount, though, and I knew I wanted to teach. So I got in touch with a mentor and she said I just needed to teach all levels.” So Morla applied for a gig with a non-profit organization called Theatre of Hearts/Youth First and began teaching art in Inglewood and South Central Los Angeles. “The kids were coming from some pretty rough neighborhoods,” Morla said. “Some were really high energy, while others were sluggish. I worked with them for about three months, along with a poet, getting the kids to talk about and create work about their neighborhoods and their lives.”

A first-generation Filipino American, Morla collects colorful packaging from Filipino snack foods, cuts them into thin strips, and meticulously weaves geometric and floral shapes. New life emerges from unconventional materials once thought of as detritus.

Morla also taught at a probation center in L.A. “These kids just needed an outlet to express themselves. I had to work pretty intuitively and pull all my tricks out of the hat. I learned so much about working with young people. It was a really intense time.” In all, she spent some 10 years in Los Angeles before coming back home to Oxnard. “I was still a kid when I was doing this, 23 or 24, and even though I grew up in south Oxnard, I was really sheltered,” she said. “The neighborhood was pretty mellow in the ‘70s. That changed, of course.” Morla leads a kind of organic life. Her art, her teaching, even her family, all relate in a symbiotic way. “My parents came from the Philippines with almost nothing, so they wanted me to do something practical; they didn’t want me to struggle,” she explained. “They had two or three jobs while I was growing up. It was a hard life, but it was a blessing.” Afforded the opportunity to go to college, Morla heeded her mom’s advice and thought about a “practical” career. She majored in psychology. “I found myself failing a class in my major and it was very humbling. My dad and I talked by phone and he asked, ‘What classes are you getting As in?’ I was getting As in drawing, painting, and art history, and it clicked: I knew I could teach. It was a practical career that would make me happy.” It wasn’t the first time her father’s words and work influenced her. In the Philippines, he wove rugs in patterns similar to the ones she creates now. She says it was unconscious at first, but now she sees his work in her own. “In graduate school, I was open to anything,” she said. “I was getting close to presenting my thesis and wasn’t sure what I was going to do.”

That’s when she found a mat her father had woven in the Philippines. “I think that subconsciously found its way into my work.” Morla describes that work as being very much related to painting or more traditional art forms. “As far as painting goes, I’m still dealing with the formal elements in this work of color value, composition, light, and space. But as far as process and materials, it’s more labor intensive: cutting the papers and then doing the weavings based on sizes of the strips.” Kaleidoscopic Gaze is a collection of such weavings that began for Morla in 1998. In one of the exhibit rooms, panels are all full of weavings that feature abstract representations of Oxnard landscapes. “It all comes full circle for me,” she explains. “It’s a documentation of my life that way. Art and teaching are, of course, symbiotic. They are both optimistic representations that there is something worth knowing about creation and creators. They are both hopeful about the future. “This is what I love about being at Oxnard [College],” said Morla. “I look at these young people’s faces and I see myself. I know about their living situations and what they’re going through. I’m from here. It’s my home. There are a few students who go on to some creative field, and I feel like I had some part in that. It feels so great.” v KALEIDOSCOPIC GAZE Christine Morla’s series of mixed-media works reflecting the cultural landscape of Oxnard will be on display at Carnegie Art Museum through August 18. Injured Golfers:

Is Your Low Back Pain Killing Your Game? patients I accept into my program improve so dramatically that they can return to doing their normal activities, like playing golf, working out, playing with the grandkids and gardening.

You Don’t Have to Take My Word for It You don’t have to believe me or take my word for it. Listen to Don, from Moorpark: “I want to thank Dr Alff for his efforts to get me back on the golf course. It had been 9 months since I was able to play when I first contacted him. I was using a cane to walk, had a lot of back pain and never imagined I would be golfing again. Upon completion of treatment, I have now played my first 18 holes of golf with no aches or pain! I tell everyone about Dr. Alff and spinal decompression. I wish you could have been there to see the expressions on the guys when I told them my story!”

Are You an Injured Golfer Suffering from Lower Back Pain and Sciatica? Are you tired of taking mind-numbing, toxic medications to hide your pain, or scared of having risky injections into your spine, just to get through a round of golf? Or, is your pain so severe that you can’t even get out on the course? Before you do anything rash like having back surgery where you risk getting worse, endure a long rehabilitation or gamble that you may need another surgery down the road, please take 5 minutes and then read the following offer. What you’ll learn is that there is an alternative to pain pills, risky shots and back surgery. It’s called Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression. And it works. In fact, it works so well that many of the

By the way, Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression is virtually painless, so much so that most of my patients fall asleep on the table. For all practical purposes there’s essentially no chance that your condition can worsen from this treatment.

How Does this Technology Work? Computers are the reason that this wonderful technology works so well. They enable those of us who do decompression to gently and safely separate the areas of the spine where the damage to the discs has occurred. This gentle separation pulls nutrients and fluids back inside the disc, which speeds up the healing process. Decompression also pulls bulging and herniated disc material back inside the disc because of the vacuum effect that occurs inside the disc during the decompression process..

Oh, I’ve also treated patients who’ve had unsuccessful back surgery and for the most part they’ve done very well with spinal decompression. In all honesty, I can’t help everyone. There are some conditions that can’t be helped. If you have one of those conditions, I will tell you that you are not a candidate for care.

What Do You Have to Lose? You may not only lose several strokes on your score, you may also lose that crippling back pain that you are worried will eventually stop your golf game altogether…and there’s no risk on your part. I’m so sure of this technology that I am willing to give you a FREE spinal decompression qualification consultation to determine if you are a candidate for care. If you should choose to continue with your treatments after this free consultation, Great! If you decide it’s not for you, then we part friends. Don’t forget, If you need more information, go to my website at www.venturaspinalcarecenter.com to listen to testimonials from others suffering with back pain and sciatica who’ve gotten back to doing what they love. My advice to you: Don’t wait or hesitate. Just call my office direct to schedule your free, no-obligation consultation with me. If I determine that you’re a good candidate for spinal decompression, we can start you immediately and get you back in the game!

How comic art immortalized the patriarch of the free press. Interview by Ivor Davis

T

Portrait by Debra DiPaolo

o paraphrase a British saying, “Old journalists never die —they just fade away.” But 80-something journalist and writer John Wilcock is an exception to that rule. A pundit and happy pontificator, Wilcock has a wide-ranging, eclectic background that meanders more than six decades, from scribbling for the English tabloids to helping found New York’s first “underground” newspaper, The Village Voice. He was a travel writer and author, and, in 2001, finally settled in Ojai where he pens an international blog about matters that take his fancy. Now Wilcock, who’s originally from Sheffield, England, has finally received the credit he deserves.

No, not a knighthood from the Queen. Something even more prestigious. He has become a comic book character. Nothing to rival Spiderman or Little Orphan Annie, but more centered on the peculiar Life and Times of the Wiley Wilcock. The comic book strip is based on the adventures outlined in his self-published Internet memoir, “Manhattan Memories,” and includes brushes with Marilyn Monroe and Andy Warhol— although not in the same room. Like Wilcock, I too am an intrepid reporter, and one weekend this summer I ambushed him at the Coffee Connection in Meiners Oaks. A fierce and frank interrogation took place. I listened to his fascinating oratory, keeping in mind my old journalist credo: Never let the facts get in the way of a good story. 8 11 9 a u gMuas yt 2 0 1 3 | v e n t a n a | 3

Ivor Davis: What’s it like to become a comic book character? John Wilcock: It’s a great way to end a long and interesting career. Americans revere comic strips and are intrigued by graphic novels. No one would buy or review my book—but then I realized I had written a script for a comic book. That was it. ID: Who’s your favorite comic book character? JW: I only read Blondie. Americans are reared on comic strips that keep them perennially juvenile. ID: Other than you, rocker Joe Cocker, and steel cutlery, did anything else from Sheffield become famous? JW: There’s the guy who painted swimming pools, David Hockney, he’s also a Yorkshireman. ID: Malcolm McDowell is a Yorkshireman and lives in Ojai. Have you met him? JW: No, but I was friendly with Larry Hagman. ID: I don’t think he came from Yorkshire. JW: Probably not. ID: Does Sheffield have a good soccer team? JW: When I was growing up it was a grubby tawdry place; we called it The Socialist Republic of Sheffield. Now it’s slick and attractive, with green belts. ID: What did you think of Andy Warhol? JW: I spent seven or eight years around that scene and he was a friend— as anyone was ever a friend of Andy’s. I never saw him angry or put 32

anyone down. He was sweet, very inventive, and I liked him a lot. He taught me a tremendous amount about life. This may sound ridiculous, but he was very much like a Socrates to me. ID: And what about meeting with Marilyn? JW: I did the interview for the Toronto magazine Liberty. She was late but quite charming. It’s amazing how easy it was to get to see her. Today, PR people try to avoid you speaking to their clients. I didn’t know then what a huge star Marilyn would become. She was a B-star then, not in the Bette Davis, Joan Crawford Dietrich league. ID: Who was your best ever interview? JW: So many. But those who are basically human and don’t feel they’re above you. I always treated them as equals. Today, a star walks out if you ask questions that are not allowed. ID: How were you able to move from print media into the digital age? JW: When I moved to the West Coast I hired a woman to help me do my travel books. She introduced me to computers and fax machines. And I hired a great guy in Ojai to do my website. I’m totally incompetent on that front. ID: Did not getting hired by The New Yorker upset you? JW: They blew me off. My comic strip shows what their attitude was: aloof and kind of out of it, but producing a brilliant and fascinating magazine. I wouldn’t have suited them. I got my #New York Times# travel job instead.

“We were the first. Then there were 600 paper members of the underground press. We helped change newspapers forever, and I’m proud of how we did that.”

ID: Why does Wikipedia describe you as, “one of the unsung heroes of the sixties?” JW: When we started The Village Voice there were no alternate, antiestablishment papers. My column ran all over the world, from the LA Free Press to Oz in Australia. We were the first. Then there were 600 paper members of the underground press. We helped change newspapers forever, and I’m proud of how we did that. ID: Who did you vote for in the last presidential election? JW: I can’t vote. I am still a Brit with a green card. I’m just too lazy to become a citizen. ID: Who did you vote for in the last Casitas Water District election? JW: I voted for anyone who wants to put them out of business. I’m against the whole idea of private companies owning water companies to make a profit. It’s outrageous. Same goes for hospitals. ID: How do you react when people ask, “Who’s John Wilcock”?

JW: It doesn’t bother me. I have had a lot of recognition in certain circles. A colleague used to say we were “famous unknowns.” ID: What’s the next chapter in your life? JW: I’m content doing my column and putting out a lot of books. I’ve done 37, mostly on the web…and three books about magic places to visit. My next big one to go up is about marijuana. I may have been the first person in the fifties to write about marijuana. ID: Do you still use it? JW: Not as much as I used to. Every underground newspaper I visited—Australia, Amsterdam, Rome—they wanted two things: to end the Vietnam War and legalize marijuana. v THE OJAI ORANGE Read John Wilcock’s “column of lasting insignificance” online at ojaiorange.com. DONnA GRANATA

The Perfect Storm Painting, music, and dance converge in a whirlwind of artistic expression.

By Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

A

rtWalk Ventura arrived in grand style last month, with a unique multimedia presentation taking center stage. A marriage of painting, music, and dance, Convergence highlighted creative collaboration at its finest, as Ventura County Ballet Company’s best dancers spun across a stage illuminated by the fluid, lyrical images of Gerd Koch, ArtWalk Ventura’s Artist of Distinction for 2013. Simultaneously, violinist Yue Deng and pianist/ composer Miguel del Aguila, internationally acclaimed virtuosos who live in Ojai and Camarillo, respectively, played the score. Bringing art to life has rarely been so beautifully, or literally, conceived. But more extraordinary, perhaps, is how so many local luminaries came together to create the experience and support Ventura’s art scene. The presentation was the brainchild of Donna Granata, founder of Focus on the Masters, which put on the program. Harnessing her expertise and impressive connections, Granata pooled a formidable array of talent for the one-of-a-kind event. august 2013

professionals. The group was custom-made for this ambitious production. “We’re trying to approach the community to show them that ballet comes in all forms,” says Kathleen Noblin, the founder of VCBC. “VCBC is a classical ballet company, but Convergence was very contemporary. It shows a different side of us.” Granata brought the dancers into her studio for some photo sessions. They were essentially bathed in Koch’s art, and found themselves engaging with it intuitively. “They’d see a pool of blue on the floor and put their toes into it like it was a pool of water,” recalls Eileen Riddle, VCBC’s board president. “They just played with the light and let it inspire them.” The resulting photos are breathtaking: elegant bodies veiled in a swirl of colors and textures, suggesting a figure from a painting coming to life. The line between art and reality is obscured. Granata made mounted prints of select photos to be sold at auction, with the proceeds benefitting FOTM Educational Programming. They also gave her and choreographer Brett Weidlich a sense of how the performance would look.

DOnNA GRANATA

ART Artist of Distinction Gerd Koch is a renowned abstract impressionist painter who taught at Ventura College for 32 years. As a student, Granata took one of Koch’s courses, “Exploring the Visual Arts.” Students created slides of their art and projected them onto figures as part of their classwork. “I loved that project, and those abstractions,” Granata recalls. “It was one of these assignments that lit a spark.” Koch loved the idea of Convergence. “I see my work as visual music, because my paintings have gestural strokes,” he explains. “I’ve been very interested in modern dance. There’s a similar vocabulary to dance and music and art.” Granata, an accomplished photographer, shot dozens of Koch’s paintings to create digital images she could project.

MUSIC A native of the Czech Republic who trained in Russia and has danced in and choreographed productions across Europe and North America, Weidlich worked closely with composer Miguel del Aguila to get a sense for how the music should shape the choreography. Del Aguila is a highly regarded contemporary classical musician and composer, originally from Uruguay, who lived in Vienna before coming to Ventura County in 1992. He has more than 100 works and numerous honors (including two Grammy nominations) to his name, and his music lends itself well to a visual narrative. “To me, music is like a play without words,” he explains. “I always have a movie playing in my head when I’m composing.” The relationship between composer and choreographer is notorious for being volatile. But for Weidlich and del Aguila, Convergence

was the start of a respectful friendship. “Brett is a good musician,” del Aguila says of Weidlich. “He understands the music in depth.” For his part, Weidlich says that del Aguila’s music is “very well dance-articulated. He has an appreciation and knowledge of classical dance.” Convergence came at a serendipitous time. Del Aguila was just finishing his latest composition, “Silencio,” a piece for piano and violin to accompany a pas de deux,” a ballet dance designed for two people. Inspired by the recent death of his brother Nelson, del Aguila created a particularly poignant work, a composition filled with emotion. “Silencio” speaks of the emptiness left by loss, and Convergence marked its West Coast premiere. Whereas “Silencio” is slow and introspective, “Seducción” is energetic and intense. Five dancers performed while del Aguila

and Deng strutted their instrumental prowess. Bringing Yue Deng into the project was a tremendous coup. The Chinese-born, Juilliard-trained violinist has worked with everyone from Jean-Yves Thibaudet to Barbara Streisand, and most recently was concertmaster and violin soloist for the Pacific Shores Philharmonic. Convergence was Deng’s last performance in Ventura County before leaving for Canada—another stroke of luck for the production, which seemed to be favored by the Muses from its inception. CONVERGENCE When fiercely talented individuals come together, it can become a clash of the titans: conflicting visions, warring egos, jockeying for prominence and credit. But from the outset, all the principals involved in Convergence seemed to be in synch. According to Granata, the group was nothing less than a mutual admiration society. “Everybody was so respectful of each other’s expertise,” she recalls. “Every single artist was being honored by the other.” v

Star Princess

One of our classic, in-house-made designs is my Star Pendant. Originally it was created for larger, round Diamonds. The STAR PRINCESS pendant is a variation on the original, and the first one went to a lovely couple that have been clients for a long time. I will be stocking it in both White Gold and Yellow Gold. Depending on the size and quality of the Diamond, the price on the limited edition will start from $1200 when set with a gorgeous 1/4 carat Diamond. If it’s set with a 1 carat Princess cut Diamond the price range is approximately $3500 to about $7500, depending on the Diamond quality. If you have a Princess cut or cushion shaped diamond or colored gem, this design is available starting at $695. “I don’t copy what’s new...I create what’s next!”-- Bob Lynn
