Get Realism
W
hen did art get so serious? When did the popular art world turn against pretty pictures and aim its collective sneer at accurate representation? I’m not here to judge; I’m no art critic. Really, who am I to call nonsense on million-dollar paint splatters. What do I know? Maybe I just can’t see Andy Warhol’s “Invisible Sculpture” (an empty plinth upon which he once stepped). Clearly Agnes Martin’s square painting of blue and white horizontal bands is more significant than the beach umbrella it calls to my mind. After all, an art cognoscente paid $1.48 million to hang it on his wall. Four years ago, in August 2008, we corralled a few artistic types for a roundtable discussion at the then-new Sylvia White Gallery. The conversation meandered, but Sylvia always came back to the concept of the “educated eye,” meaning simply that the more we see art, the more we’re exposed to it, the better equipped we become to evaluate it. A good analogy is wine tasting. I drink wine more frequently than I visit art galleries and my palate has steadily improved over the years. Berry flavors? I can taste those. Oaky? Smoky? Yes, got those too. But some of these master sommeliers’ descriptions are, dare I say, hard for me to swallow. A pricey bottle of red tastes like “animal fur”? Really, now. And what

about the reviewer who calls a wine “full-bodied and massively endowed,” with a “sexy nose,” and claims “the finish crescendos into a salty tide.” I have to think he was channeling other desires. But again, what do I know? I probably just need to drink more wine. In our interview with John Nava (p. 17) we discuss the place of realism as it applies to art in the 21st century. Thankfully, there’s nothing too abstruse about the conversation. Nava keeps it about as grounded as an art discussion can be; in fact, he draws a connecting line between latter-day representational painters and ancient man, sketching his prey on cave walls with a charcoal-tipped spear. “What does it mean to continue on with this ancient process today?” Nava asks. Hmm… I’m just a casual doodler, no visual artist. But it seems to me that with its elemental nature, realism provides a necessary counterbalance to the muddy esotericism of avant-garde art. It is, in a sense, just as extreme. Yin and yang. But whereas the value of progressive, cutting-edge art hinges largely on words and perception, realism is based on what the eye sees—and even an uneducated eye can appreciate the beauty of that. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Sculptor Maggie Kildee, former SCIART president and current artist-in-residence.
S
culptor Maggie Kildee works her audience like a chef on a cooking show, explaining the intricacies of each clay piece as she makes it. “I really like to talk to people when they come through,” she says. It’s the first Saturday of the month, and visitors are milling about Studio Channel Islands Art Center in Old Town Camarillo, getting a firsthand look at the creative process of clay sculptors, bronze sculptors, weavers, painters, and multimedia artists. Carolyn Barone, a painter who has been at the studio for nearly two years, works on a portrait of her nephew and his son. Vibrant paintings of fruit, flowers, and people fill her studio space. In a nearby room, oil painter Darla Warner puts the finishing touches on a commissioned painting of a château in France. “A commission is a wonderful thing to get,” she says, dabbing paint on canvas. “This painting is going to a good home, to someone who really wants it.” The variety of artwork done at Studio Channel Islands Art Center is dizzying; dozens of mediums and techniques are used to create original works. Bronze sculptor Susan R. Kaufman sits at a worktable in her studio perfecting a clay sculpture of a young boy. “I saw a little boy eating ice cream at the harbor and thought he was so charming,” she explains. When the clay dries and is fired in the onsite kiln, Kaufman will make a mold of it and send it to be bronzed. In addition to their personal projects and commissions, many of the artists-in-residence teach art classes. “I believe strongly in arts education,” says printmaker Gretel Compton. “It’s sorely lacking in schools. If we don’t acknowledge, emphasize, and promote creativity we’ll have a generation of kids who can’t figure things out worth a darn.” “We all have so many irons in the fire,” says artist Carol Henry of her colleagues. “That’s what we have to do to reach a broad audience and make a living.” Henry, who composes images using a complex darkroom process, hosts a class for adults with no artistic aspirations to speak of. She invites them into her studio during iPaint Nights to enjoy a glass of wine and experiment with paint uninhibited. Open Studio days give the public a glimpse of the camaraderie and community shared by the artists, who

often work in adjoining studios, sharing ideas and taking classes from each other. Recently appointed art center president and oil painter Rich Brimer teaches young adult life painting classes. He challenges his students and offers them artistic advice. “Any effort I put in makes it a better place for me to work and live,” he says of his volunteer efforts at the art center. Art center director and mixed media artist Karin Geiger felt her art changed because of her experience as an artist-in-residence. “I’m more serious about my art,” she explains. “Working in a garage, you feel isolated.” Geiger used her studio time Saturday to complete a series of six small mixed media pieces for an upcoming show. “You can change how you assemble them, but they are all connected.” Connectivity within the art center and with the surrounding community is essential, according to photographer Bryan McCall, who shares studio space with his wife, artist Christine Leong. A collection of framed nature scenes stand in McCall’s studio. “We just finished framing photos for a show at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura,” says McCall. “Commissions on sold photos will benefit the hospital.” Artist Susan Vogel is a newcomer to the art center. She specializes in oil and acrylic landscape paintings. “I joined because I was getting too lonesome and reclusive in my studio,” she says. “This has got me participating, mixing with other artists.” v Open Artists’ Studios days are held on the first Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For complete information about this and other programs at Studio Channel Islands Art Center, visit studiochannelislands. org or call 805.383.1368. SCIART will hold its major annual fundraiser from Sept. 28-30, 2012, at its gallery, located at 2221 Ventura Blvd. in Old Town Camarillo. For more information about the three-day “Mystery Masterpiece” event, call or visit the website (see above).

Sullivan Goss Gallery, Santa Barbara
Art in transition John Nava on the evolution of art and the place of realism in a digital world. Interview by Sally Rice
T
his fall some of the most influential minds in the art world will converge on Ventura to explore the direction of representational art in the 21st century. Among the keynote speakers at The Representational Art Conference (TRAC), 2012, will be locally-based realist painter John Nava, whose brilliant work places him among the most significant artists of our time. Perhaps one of Nava’s most critically acclaimed masterpieces is the series of tapestries he created for the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, commissioned by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1999. The Communion of Saints consists of 25 tapestries depicting more than 136 life-size saints from around the world and spans hundreds of years of human history. These tapestries, some of which measure 50 feet tall, are the largest in the world and were woven in Belgium—a place with deep historical roots of weaving craftsmanship—using the most advanced digital technology. Nava studied fine art at UC Santa Barbara under Howard Warshaw, who profoundly influenced the artist and was responsible for his career choice as a painter. Following graduation, Nava became a college art professor before heading to Florence, Italy to do his graduate work.
From the comfort of his home studio in the foothills of Upper Ojai, Nava shares some insight on his philosophy and his personal experience as an artist. VENTANA: The focus of TRAC is to address the neglect of critical appreciation of representational art. Can you help us better understand that concept? JOHN NAVA: I believe Michael Pearce and the others organizing the conference might feel that there is a great deal of work going on, of serious representational painters who are diligently working away and [creating art] with the traditions and skills of painting as they came down from the renaissance, for example, but they don’t get a lot of play. In the popular part of the art world, there is a great deal of focus on non-traditional technologies and means of making art, and non-traditional kinds of art. I’m sure there are many people who walk into an art museum and see something bizarre, perhaps a piano hanging upside down from the ceiling, and they’ll ask, ‘What is that?’ It’s all part of the movement to expand the boundaries of art that began in the 20th century—and it’s been the focus of a lot of museum curators, art magazines, and exhibitions about the expansion of art. But parallel to all of that, continuing in the background, are those artists August 2012

who have continued to work in a traditional form. The TRAC conference serves to bring those people into the spotlight and give them some focus. VEN: As a keynote speaker you will be discussing Painting in the Digital Age. Can you expand on that topic? JN: I have to say, this is still forming in my mind. Did you ever see Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams? It’s this kooky doc about these ancient caves discovered in 1996. The point is, they are 30,000 years old, and in the caves you have the very first human image that was depicted, done with charcoal attached to a spear, almost identical to the way we would draw with charcoal today. So the way we make pictures, and the way painters use brushes, is all very old; it’s a very primitive technique. In comparison, we all have digital cameras, and we go to movies and see 3D holograms, and there are all these special effects and image technologies, all these ways to make images. Given all the power that those things have, it’s interesting to me that there is something about making a picture by hand, like a caveman, that continues. And we’re all doing it. All the painters are not making 3D movies, they’re engaging in this very ancient practice of making something completely by hand. It struck me that this was the key— the handmade process. I wanted to ask the question: What does it mean to continue on with this ancient process today? VEN: How has art appreciation changed with these new technologies? How does this affect the viewer’s relationship with art? JN: In order to appreciate something at Art Basil, or at the Whitney Biennale, for example, it requires an education, because it’s so obscure. What’s happened is that the 18

definition of art has expanded to essentially be meaningless. In the 19th century there was a very specific idea about what art was. But now, art is anything. This is basically the legacy of Duchamp. John Baldessari, a very important contemporary artist, said, ‘If you have a pile of concrete rubble with some rebar sticking out of it laying in the street, it’s just a pile of rubble with some rebar. But if you take that identical pile and put it in the middle of the museum of modern art, now it’s a sculpture, or part of an instillation.’ So the context makes the art. There is an interaction between the museum and what’s in the room to make the art. But if you have a Vermeer that was accidently thrown in the street, it’s still a Vermeer; it’s always what it is. That comes from a time when art had a different definition. So this idea of the artist as a designer, where there’s a concept and someone else executes it, is different from the old idea of craftsmanship, where you actually have the hand of Leonardo painting the mouth of the Mona Lisa. And that is the hand element that continues in handmade pictures, but it has been dislocated in a great deal of other art forms. VEN: Do you find this evolution problematic for you as a contemporary realist painter? JN: The thing is this: I don’t personally take all of this as a tragedy. As long as people are not doing harm to each other, everything’s fine. I mean, my brother is a filmmaker. He works in a technology that’s much newer than painting. My son makes video games. He does three-dimensional models. And I respect both of them. The world now is vast. It’s a much bigger world. People are sitting with you at breakfast and they’re looking at their laptop, or at their phone. People have this very scattered consciousness now. It’s difficult for people to focus on anything for very long. And painting is all about the opposite of that. So painters may be a little nostalgic for the

time when they were at the top. Let’s face it, not too long ago, say, up until the middle of the 1800s, if you wanted a picture of something, there had to be a guy who would paint the image, or a drawing, or an etching. And if you wanted to hear music, you had to physically go to where instruments were being played. Now we live in a world of images. You watch TV and the screen is divided up with a gazillion images going by simultaneously. You drive down the street and you’re bombarded with images, readouts on the dashboard, moving images on billboards. We live in a world of image glut. VEN: You had exceptional traditional training at Villa Schifanoia in Florence, Italy. Tell us about that. JN: My wife and I moved to Florence for two years. It was a dream, an amazing experience. One of my teachers was Luciano Berti, the director of the Uffizi Gallery. We would have classes in the museum, in places that are not open to the public. The whole experience was very inspiring. We had a car but we couldn’t afford gas, so we always had a horde of people come with us. We made a lot of trips to the countryside, going to Arezzo and Sansepolcro to see the works of Piero della Francesca. But for me, the most important and most inspirational artist in Florence was Masaccio, and the frescos in the Brancacci Chapel. VEN: Would you say the fresco medium moved you more than other formats? JN: I have always been a little bit restless, I think, and I’ve worked in a lot of different manners, but I always come back to that dry-surfaced, fresco style painting. It resonates with me the same way as the cave paintings. It’s very much about a wall, not a canvas. 20

There’s something very ancient about it, and I respond to that. VEN: Do you work according to a schedule, or wait for inspiration? Where do you find your muse? JN: I work everyday, and I’m so behind; there’s always something I’m supposed to be doing. But things shift, and interests change for me. I’ve never been very interested in landscape painting. But in the last few years I’m finding it very inspiring, and I have an interest in doing big landscape paintings. I always focused on figure painting. But now I’m finding the figure in the landscape, and I want to look at that. VEN: Where are you going now? What do you see in your future? JN: I have several things I want to do: large projects that I can’t talk about. It’s a huge thing, on the East Coast. It would take me about two years or so. It’s not as big as the Cathedral project, but very close. I’m very excited about that, but I’m also happy to just go to my neighbor’s house and paint the Topa Topas. That’s nice too. That’s all I have to do. All I do is paint. v The Representational Art Conference, 2012, presented by California Lutheran University, offers three days (October 14-17) of lively discussion in Ventura, including keynote speakers, academic papers, panel discussions, and exclusive demonstrations by prominent artists, bringing together thought leaders and practitioners who share an interest in the practice of the traditional studio techniques of sculpture, painting, and drawing media in the 21st century. here is, arguably, a palpable change in our collective attitudes today since a decades-long spiral into consumerism grabbed the nation and hung on like some bad virus. But for a fortunate few, often boomers who grew up hearing stories of the Great Depression at their parents’ knees, restraint is a way of life. For Camarillo residents Dan Phillips and his ceramic artist wife Gayle Bentley Swanson, less was always more. So it was only natural that the couple, who now share five children and seven grandchildren in their blended family, would make something of the modest Fickettdesigned home in Camarillo Heights that Phillips’ parents left him. Swanson was immediately drawn to the house. “When Dan’s parents left him this place, we saw the simplicity of the Fickett design and the rugged beauty of the land. “With a little tree trimming we can even see St. Mary Magdalene’s church lit up at night through the kitchen window,” Gayle explains in her quiet voice as she shows me the view down the valley and into Camarillo.
And while the home today has kept its decidedly mid-century look, a few architectural elements were removed to allow for more windows and light or solve a structural issue. The result is an even more uncluttered look than the original. Oversized front windows, originally tucked behind a wall built of alternately missing cement blocks designed to let in filtered light yet allow for privacy, are now fully exposed after construction workers simply removed the wall. The roof’s horizontal, slightly vaulted line is now broken midway, and oversized glass doors with operable clerestory windows above make the breadth of the front almost entirely exposed. To reduce maintenance, previously wood fascia boards and eaves are wrapped in the same stucco that now covers the home. One of the biggest transformations is the kitchen, which was originally in the back of the house. Moved to the front and combined with a family room, it now accommodates a more traditional 21st century open kitchen lifestyle. Levi Mize mahogany kitchen cabinets continue the clean lines and prevent clutter, with garages August 2012 | ventana | 27

terminating at the granite counter to store appliances such as a coffee mill, teapot, and toaster oven. Although the property is on seven acres, the house and gardens comprise just a small portion, with the rest being left natural. Barrancas and hillsides loaded with prickly pear and other native shrubs surround the house. Meandering paths are formed from repurposed concrete and small walls delineate outdoor seating areas. On the property’s west side, beyond what is the most formal area, the path splits, offering a separate route to both the chicken coop Phillips built and Swanson’s block-wall studio. Here, pale cornflower yellow walls support shelves crammed with jars of glazes, bits of partially finished pieces, and an assortment of tools. This is a working studio, a place of reflection and creativity for Swanson. Near the door, a potter’s wheel beckons, light pouring onto it through the door we’ve left open behind us. Just outside, Nick the white rescue rooster roams under the shelter of trees, crowing now and then to remind us who’s in charge. “My work is a constant, and a very Zen companion. Color, rather than content, defines my work, and so even when I’m not in the studio I’m thinking of colors to put together,” Gayle tells me. She compares her color scheme to watercolors running into each other and colliding to create unusual blends, which give a depth to her pieces—from serious sculptures to whimsical jewelry.
The home’s interior colors are subdued, with Gayles’ calming artwork here and there. Sculptures are placed on shelves in an extra bedroom, pieces propped against walls. By the living room fireplace, a large salt-fired pot with bright turquoise glaze covering half of the outside is a standout, its raw, natural look in sharp contrast to its glaze. A fruit bowl in the kitchen has nine shades of crackled turquoise, greens, and blue that in typical Gayle style all run into one another. A matte gold trim with an Egyptian design is imprinted into the edges. From interior restructuring to exterior seating areas built by Dan and landscaping designed by Swanson, who is also a Certified Master Gardener, the duo succeeded in one of the most difficult aspects of a successful remodel: continuity. “We give each other energy and excitement,” says Swanson. With the remodel over, they are back at it, Gayle working on art projects—her pieces have a permanent home at the Ventura County Potters’ Guild Gallery in Harbor Village—and Phillips spending his days as a kayaking guide in the Channel Islands. By way of explanation for the success of the remodel, Swanson tells me, “We kept Fickett’s original theme, remembering that what you do to the inside you have to do to the outside.” I think Fickett would approve. v Gayle Bentley Swanson’s art can be seen online at swansonclayart.com.

ally guiding you through every step of the design and remodeling process from concept to completion. One of their clients had this to say about her remodeling experience “.When other people tell me horror stories about their kitchen remodeling experience, I always wonder—should I tell them how great it could have been if they’d known about Brenda & Rory? Or, should I just keep quiet for fear that hearing about my wonderful adventure will only make them feel worse? No kidding, I not only LOVE my new kitchen—I actually enjoyed the experience of creating it. Brenda & Rory started when they said they would, finished when they said they would—and they seemed to have screened their subcontractors on the basis of personality, as well as skill and reliability. I had expected to feel “violated” from having a stream of workers in and out of my house, but instead I was a bit sorry to see them go when they were finished. The result is a thing of beauty that I never get tired of living in—or showing off!” Whether you are looking for traditional design or contemporary, or maybe something in between, Midtown Kitchens an help you create the kitchen you’ve always wanted. zero to infinity Versatile violinist Yue Deng has traveled a rare path—from Hebei, China to the sun-kissed Ojai Valley. LESLIE A. WESTBROOK explores the past and present of a Juilliard-trained wunderkind with a jazzy side.
“M
y father always told me,” Yue Deng, the petite new principal concertmaster and violin soloist for the Pacific Shores Philharmonic, informed me, “that no matter what you achieve, or how far you go, you start from zero.” Deng has experienced many “new beginnings” throughout her budding career, making her a power to be reckoned with. The versatile, classically trained musician first tasted fame at the tender age of eight after winning the National Violin Competition in China against other aspiring musicians from all over the vast country. Don’t let her diminutive frame fool you: Deng is a powerhouse, with an ear and natural affinity for jazz and pop, a rarity among classical musicians. Recently married to UCSB mechanical engineering professor Rousln Krechetnikov, she has performed in the classical mode with the Santa Barbara Symphony, the Ventura Symphony, and Master Chorale of Ventura County, and recorded an album of compositions by Claus 34

Ogermann with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. But she has also performed on albums and/or worked with Diana Krall, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Willy Nelson, and Johnny Mandel, among others. And she’s played not only Carnegie Hall, but Birdland, too. How in the heck did that happen? Like this: One summer, in 1999, during Yue’s second term at Montecito’s Music Academy of the West, the highly regarded, intensive summer program for talented young classical musicians from around the globe, Yue met a volunteer by the name of Janet Lees. Mrs. Lees, who resides in Ojai, happened to be the wife of the highly respected jazz author and lyricist Gene Lees. Gene and Yue met, and the rest was a mutual admiration society kismet. In his delightful book, a collection of profiles titled Friends Along the Way: A Journey through Jazz (Yale University Press, 2003), Gene devoted the last chapter to Yue. “I have pondered how the young lady happened into our lives,” he wrote, “and

what would have occurred had she not done so. But the existential reality is that what is, is. What happened, happened. And there is no turning back from it.” It was a fateful connection for all parties, and one that I imagine Gene, who passed away two years ago, would delight in and not wish to rewind. “Gene and Janet opened my eyes to all types of music, literature, the arts, and politics,” Yue said enthusiastically, recalling her friends’ influence on her life and career. They also introduced her to their fine circle of influential friends in the music business, which included Hank and Ginny Mancini, composer/lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and Ojai-based jazz pianist/composer/arranger Roger Kellaway. Gene wanted Roger to hear the young violinist, who knew nothing of jazz until she heard and went crazy over a Dizzy Gillespie album in Janet’s car. Roger had written a piece for violin titled “Nuages.” Yue nailed it, and her youthful musical world was soon to be expanded. The duo recorded an album, appropriately titled “Both Sides Now,” perhaps a double entendre referencing both the Joni Mitchell song on the CD as well as Yue’s versatility. “Yue was brilliant. She’s a fantastic talent and I look forward to working with her again,” noted Roger recently. At that time, Roger, obviously impressed by her playing abilities and wanting to showcase her talent, also invited Yue to perform at a gig he had booked at The Jazz Bakery in Culver City. She met and was praised by jazz aficionados including noted film director Sidney Pollack, world famous architect Frank Gehry, and actor/director Mark Rydell. “Sydney Pollack kissed my hand!” gushed Yue. “All my friends said, ‘Don’t ever wash your hand!’” But back to her roots. “[China] started the one-child policy the year before I was born, so parents were very devoted to their only child. People really value education in China; I was six-and-a-half when I began playing (her first violin cost two dollars) … I learned English in middle school in China, but not spoken English. I did not become fluent until graduate school at Juilliard in New York.” Yue tasted fame at a young age after winning the National Violin Competition. A local television station made a documentary that was picked up by Central China TV and shown all over the country. At age nine, she was accepted to the Central

Conservatory of Music in Beijing, a boarding school that the “always independent” young lady “loved.” “Gene told me that performing is shy man’s revenge, but I am not really shy,” she said. “I got used to it from childhood. I used to get boxes of fan letters, but my parents didn’t want me to see them or become arrogant. People would stop me in the streets and say, ‘You’re the person in the documentary.’ What I really care about is making music.” In an unusual twist—a sort of role-reversal—her mother (originally an electrician) started teaching violin after Yue moved to the United States to attend college on a full scholarship at Oberlin College. “She would observe me practicing and we would speak about it,” recalled Yue, noting that her mother taught her to sing Chinese folk songs as a child, although she no longer remembers them. “She then figured out her own way to train violinists, when she was in her forties.” Because Deng has been immersed in not only the classical music oeuvre, but, thanks to friends in Ojai, jazz and even pop tunes, she is bringing a fresh outlook and groove to the new Pacific Shores Philharmonic Orchestra. “She’s a rising star—the perfect package of poise, grace, brilliance, and fire,” said Pacific Shores Philharmonic conductor E. Burns Taft. “What more could you ask for?” There’s plenty more musical praise and details about Deng in Gene Lee’s book, but I happen to love this nugget, for which I can personally vouch: “She is insanely funny, both intentionally and unintentionally. I have never known anyone who is so easy to crack up, and when she cracks up she is liable to roll off a sofa and fold up in a quaking ball of laughter.” Yue Deng needed to find her own way—on her own time and terms. Which brings us to now. Not bad for a kid who starts from zero every day. v Keep up to date with the progress of the Pacific Shores Philharmonic Foundation in 2013 by visiting www.psphil.com or friending the organization on Facebook.

SPARKLE!
This magnificent, colorless, oval diamond is 2.05 carats and was fashioned by Sirius Star Cutting Works on my commission. The original 3 carat diamond from which it was cut was visually lifeless. Now, the brilliance and sparkle of this diamond have to be seen to be believed. And the price has to be seen to be believed, too! If Sirius Star owned this diamond, they would be advertising it to their network of jewelers for a wholesale price slightly above $27,000. The Lynn’s price is $21,500, including tax! As a gift, imagine how they will feel! Maybe it’s perfect for you just because you deserve it!
