A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE
A
rtist Bill Viola (p. 25) was recently named one of five 2011 Praemium Imperiale Laureates, among the highest international distinctions in the arts. Presented by the imperial family of Japan, the awards are given in areas not covered by the Nobel Prizes: painting, sculpture, architecture, music, and theater-film. For four decades Viola has been on the leading edge of video art—from video tapes to flat panel video pieces, architectural installations, sound environments, and electronic music performances. Yet he was awarded in the category of painting. Now, my perception of the word “painting” bears little resemblance to Viola’s fiercely contemporary New Media art. With a lingual downshift though, it all comes home. You see, the official English language press release from The Japan Art Association refers to Viola as a pioneer in the video genre and describes his work as “moving paintings.” Moving paintings. As a lover of language, I find a certain poetic enchantment in this interpretation. It takes me back to elementary school and the twinkly-eyed art teacher who reinforced our creativity by assuring us that it’s okay to draw outside the lines, that if we see a puppy in a Picasso abstract, then by God it’s a puppy. Yes, art is a matter of perspective. Cliché but true. Viola spent time in Ojai this spring filming/painting segments for two permanent installations at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. “Big news for our small town,” wrote Donna Granata, the founder of Focus on the Masters (focusonthemasters.com), who photographed and interviewed Viola while he was in the area. But she mentioned all this as an aside to a different email conversation we were having. I’d reached out to Donna and a heavy handful of other art types for suggestions on a specific story angle, as I frequently do with local experts during the editorial process. Art is a particularly difficult subject, hazy and indefinable. One of my favorite sayings about it is, “The first mistake of art is to assume that it’s serious.” 6

And with that said, let’s proceed to the 60-ton head on our cover. What is it, you ask? Well, it is a severed head—and a stage—rising from an Austrian lake. And there’s a man from Ventura rappelling off the eyeball into a boozy gathering of French aristocrats whose fete is underway within the pages of an elephantine book. It’s all part of an Italian opera: André Chénier, a tale of love and death, and the stage design is based on a famous Neoclassical painting by Jacques-Louis David, The Death of Marat, which depicts the murder of radical Prussian-born journalist Paul Marat. The show is obviously a colossal spectacle. But what sold me on this arts-themed cover wasn’t necessarily the local connection to a multinational extravaganza, but rather the array of artistic mediums represented in a single image. (And we can’t even hear the music of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra drifting across Lake Constance.) Check out the pulled-back photo on page 39 for a different perspective. Now imagine an artistic production like this rising from the waters of Ventura County. Difficult to visualize, I know. But I can easily relate to a scene Andrea Kitay paints in her story about AiRealistic (p. 35), the Ventura-based aerial theater company hired to get the opera off the ground, so to speak. When founding members Gregg and Carmen Curtis moved into their new Ventura home, Kitay explains, they rigged the garage with ropes and fabric so their seven-year-old daughter could practice aerial acrobatics. Which of course drew other neighborhood tykes, promptly squashing the stereotype of the ostracized new kid on the block. I’m sure some grown-up neighbors have peered longingly through that open garage door, too, eager to take a crack. You can bet I’d have been on the neighborhood welcoming committee. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

eyond a secluded winding country road dotted with poppies and lavender lies an artist’s haven. For 14 years, Keith Puccinelli, a nationally and internationally recognized artist, and his wife, Fran, a retired small business owner, have made their passion their home inside a geodesic dome atop a canyon between the Carpinteria coast and Ojai Valley’s Lake Casitas. “It’s a bird’s nest on top of the hill,” says Fran, who discovered the property in 1997. She recounts the story of returning home to their rental in Carpinteria, where they lived for 20 years, to tell Keith, “I found our house today.” Flanked by cypress and birch trees, the taupe-gray geodesic dome—an architectural style popularized by Buckminster Fuller—and the long view down an oak-studded canyon, was what attracted the couple to the property. The modest-sized three-bedroom, two-bath home is just less than

Inside, they say, they had their work cut out for them. “It was really bad seventies,” says Keith, who’s mostly known for his designs and illustrations, recalling pulling up the wall-to-wall carpeting. Underneath they found the knotty cedar subfloor, and decided to sand and polish the wood to see how it might turn out. Today, the golden-blond wood still holds a gorgeous sheen and serves as the foundation for the home’s design, which, when pressed, Keith dubs, “Puccinelli style.” Much of Puccinelli’s artwork is characterized by witty irreverence. Indeed, the artist can trace his roots to the 16th century Italian commedia dell’arte, an improvisational form of street theater whose exaggerated characters were the precursors of modern clowns. Fran, too, is a natural artist, and in this tastefully decorated space, their signature is everywhere. Fran’s handiwork with mosaic tiles is on display on the patio, the sunroom, and the

entryway, where she found beauty in jagged broken pieces of beigegold limestone. In the guestroom, she fashioned a countertop from clear pale-green shards from a friend’s broken shower door. “I loved the glass, so I brought it home,” Fran says. Hanging above the wood-burning stove in the living room is the first piece of art the couple, now married 28 years, bought together. Titled “Cigars,” the painting by Wayne Thiebaud held special meaning because Fran had just quit smoking. from finding homes for their 100 pieces of contemporary and folk art. “Any opportunity for straight walls, we use,” Keith says. Top to bottom: Keith’s predilection for clowns is evident in this drawing in progress for the upcoming “Sweet Cream Sour Fool” exhibition at the Atkinson Gallery, Santa Barbara (details below). with bobcats, deer, coyotes, foxes, and even bears (they have only seen one). “It’s kind of wild and wooly around here,” Fran says. Nature, though, has sometimes presented a challenge. Their driveway was completely taken out by the 2005 floods, and for six months the couple had to park on the highway, hiking in and out of the property. “We’ve learned a lot living up here,” Keith says. “It’s made us hardy.” To keep the moving earth at bay, the back of the house is surrounded by a retaining wall that was once part of the Alaska Pipeline. The wall’s curves and bright poppy-orange paint make it seem more design-conscious than functional. A steep driveway is lined on one side with oleander and on the other with grassy vetiver, which is not only beautiful, but also perfect for erosion control, says Fran, who does all of the gardening. She plants mostly wildflowers, succulents, natives, and drought-tolerant species, as well as fruit, olive, and walnut trees. Her raised-bed vegetable and herb gardens are located on a lower part of the property, between a tiny screen house and Keith’s art studio. The screen house, Fran says, is the best place to be when it’s hot, a bug-free refuge of cool ocean breezes (the property is just one mile as the crow flies from the coast). Furnished simply with two built-in twin day beds, one of Fran’s hooked rugs, and charming wooden bumblebees hanging from the corrugated steel roof, it feels like an adult playhouse. While Fran gardens, Keith works in his 800-square-foot studio on large-scale drawings and sculptures. His work is dramatic, yet always with a touch of humor and playfulness. And the same can be said for the couple’s home. v The Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College will present a solo exhibition of Keith Puccinelli’s artwork from November 4 through December 9. The public is invited to attend an opening reception for the artist on November 7 from 5-7 p.m. Details online at gallery.sbcc.edu.

Home& Garden The owners of Midtown Kitchens, Brenda and Rory Stoner, are both Certified Kitchen Designers by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. With over 20 years of experience they can offer a worry-free renovation that involves personally guiding you through every step of the design and remodeling process from concept to completion. One of their clients had this to say about his remodeling experience “... The most important thing was adherence to their original detailed schedule of the work and adherence to the original cost estimate. Concerts come home No grand opera hall. No great forum. No problem parking. This is the house concert, where music is an intimate conversation between artist and audience By Mark Storer Photos by Gary And Pierre Silva

(except where noted)
all it the reverse rock show. The lights go down and the crowd claps, even cheers, but then all goes quiet. The performer takes the stage and says hello and instead of fist pumping and lighters, the crowd simply says hello back. A cell phone rings, to the owner’s embarrassment, and the performer waits while the guest turns it off. Welcome to a house concert. Musical troubadours are nothing new, of course. They go back to medieval times when traveling minstrels went from village to village reciting poems and singing songs for a few coins, or maybe a meal and a warm bed. The musicians saw it as a way to gain popularity and a supportive audience. It was total free enterprise: a service was offered and if patrons liked the service, they paid. It’s happening again, or perhaps it never really went away. Musicians across the U.S. line up concerts at private residences, usually the homes of friends or acquaintances; the host then literally opens their door to some 30 to 50 guests, providing a small-scale yet eager audience for the artists. Ventura County has long been a house concert haven, perhaps because of its proximity to L.A., perhaps because there are many musicians living here. Whatever the reason, house concert venues dot the hillsides and tract homes of the county from Oak Park to Ojai. It’s not that the trend is growing, it’s that the trend is here. If there is any change, it’s that more musicians are realizing the benefits of the unique venue. “Contemplative music can be played for thoughtful audiences, who are comfortable, seated, parked for free, treated respectfully, and genuinely excited about hearing the music,” said David Poe, a singer and songwriter from Los Angeles who recently performed at Jim McCarthy and Christine Brennan’s home in Ojai. “The house concert represents a return to the heart of the musical experience, which is not a passive, television-like affair but a dialogue between musician and audience,” he said. “We can get maybe 30 people into the house,” said McCarthy about concerts at his home. “With that, musicians who play can make a decent wage, and it’s a way of contributing to the music Christine and I like.” Most hosts don’t take any of the cover charge or donation that is asked at the door. All of the proceeds go to the musicians—or, at times, to charity. “We have a suggested cover charge of 15 dollars,” said McCarthy. “Some people give more. It is a considerable amount of work, but it’s worth it to us.” There are limitations, of course. Most hosts can’t put on a show every night. “We only do one or two shows a year,” said McCarthy. “It provides impetus for us to clean the house, but it’s not something we can do all the time.” One also has to be sure that the noise level is appropriate. “Most of our shows are acoustic and we’ve never had a problem with the neighbors. A lot of them come to the shows,” he said. “You do have to be careful about parking and the crowd, and it’s probably not best to offer a lot of alcohol.” “There’s no more intimate musical experience,” said Russ Paris about hosting shows at his home in Oak Park. “It’s a real community event.” Paris and his wife, Julie, have built one of the most

popular house concert venues in the state, featuring well-known musicians including Laurence Juber, the guitarist for Paul McCartney’s band, Wings, among others. “It’s a real listening room, and that makes it worthwhile,” Paris said. Russ and Julie’s House Concerts, as they’re known, happen about 10 times a year. This month, on August 13, Barry McGuire, who wrote the 1965 hit song “Eve of Destruction,” will perform (in Russ and Julie’s Ventura County living room) with John York. “We push the shows as hard and as much as we can,” said Paris. “We’ve met musicians who’ve heard of us and ask if they can play.” Ojai singer-songwriter Rain Perry has been on both sides of the house concert scene, as a performer and a host. “We don’t do ‘official’ house concerts,” she said, “but I’ll occasionally host one if a friend is coming through.” Perry, who wrote “Beautiful Trees,” the title song of the television show “Life Unexpected,” says the shows are uniquely demanding for performers. “The audience is focused on you,” she explained. “It’s not like playing a bar or a club where there’s a lot of background noise.” Perry said that the popularity of the concerts has grown for the musicians as well. “You’re not going to get rich playing house concerts, but you can make a living,” she said. “Some of the more popular 22

ones, like Russ and Julie’s, are hard to get booked into.” But the effort is worth it, according to Perry: “You get 100 percent of the proceeds, not a percentage of them. And if you book a show, the host does their best to provide a full house.” Su Part and her husband, Jon Kavesh, are Ventura County-based music lovers who attend house concerts when they can. “Our first one was seeing Harold Payne play at Russ and Julie’s,” said Part. “You can talk to the musicians most of the time. It’s so intimate, you feel like they’re doing a show just for you.” “You’re not straining to see what the performer is doing with his or her fingers,” said Kavesh. “It’s like having a conversation with the performer.” Which is, of course, what the musicians like about the shows as well. “I wish more people would be willing to open up their homes to music,” said Paris. “I think it would do a lot of good.” Poe drew the strongest analogy between the house and the concert, though. “Music is like a shot of whiskey, or adrenaline. Songs are still best perceived in a hi-fi, low-distraction environment—and those environments are special, and rare.” v For details about Russ and Julie’s House Concerts and a listing of house concert resources, log on to houseconcerts.us.

Target Video artist Bill Viola and the evolution of art Interview and photos by Donna Granata
B
ill Viola is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading artists. He was recently named a 2011 Praemium Imperiale Laureate, one of the world’s most prestigious art awards, and has been instrumental in the establishment of video as a vital form of contemporary art. For 40 years he has created videotapes, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, flat panel video pieces, and works for television broadcast. Viola’s video installations—total environments that envelop the viewer in image and sound—employ state-of-the-art technologies and are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. They are shown in museums and galleries worldwide and are found in many distinguished collections. In spring of 2011, Viola was in Ojai filming segments for two permanent installations at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. Documentarian Gerald Fox was also there, working with the BBC on a film about the artist. The following is an excerpt of a conversation between Bill Viola and local photographer and Focus on the Masters Founder Donna Granata.

DONNA GRANATA: Tell us about this new project. BILL VIOLA: I was approached by people at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. They had seen The Messenger (a single-channel video and sound installation), which I did in 1996. A canon of the church, who is also in charge of the arts, was very excited by that work and they ended up actually asking me to do two plasma screen chapels for St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. That’s two permanent installations, something I don’t think has ever been done before. When you’re dealing with media as opposed to painting and sculpture, you’re really dealing with something that has to find its eternity in a different way. It’s a moving target, an active and evolving technology. We’re still trying to get our minds around how that would actually work, with the perception that we want to do something that’s permanent. The Tate will be the caretakers of the work. They’re going to open up their whole tech facility, one of the best in the world for restoration. They’re going to be taking care of it for the foreseeable future.
backgrounds—I think we have to really get rid of that. Art probably has the best chance in humanity of being the universal language. You can see 3,000-year-old sculptures. They were people just like us. You can shed a tear for it and can be touched by it emotionally. That’s a powerful link. That’s what it really means to me right now. There are two projects I’m doing for St. Paul’s, which are interrelated. One is the life cycle of Mary, done in a somewhat contemporary way. It’s very powerful. This particular shot in Ojai shows Mary, who has run away because she was frightened and disturbed when the angel came to her with his message. Then she traveled over mountains on a three-day walk. She ends up coming back to her cousin Elizabeth’s house, her safety net. We’re shooting the culminating scene in this field. Elizabeth comes out of her house, taking a break. She sees someone walking across the landscape towards her and realizes it is Mary. Then the two of them embrace. For Mary, who did this very arduous journey, this is a huge thing. The second piece I’ve been asked to make is on the topic of martyrs. Here (the one
When you’re dealing with media as opposed to painting and sculpture, you’re really dealing with something that has to find its eternity in a different way. It’s a moving target, an active and evolving technology. DG: In order to keep the project up to date as technology changes? BV: Yes. DG: How does that feel, knowing this work will continue to evolve and be updated as technology evolves? BV: I was very touched when they came up with the idea of having the Tate be the caretaker. This is living stuff! It’s movement. It’s time. We’re very thrilled with it. From the time of Buddha and Christ, we go back to the idea of a recitation, whether it’s a Hebrew recitation or a simple repetition that keeps the knowledge circulating in an active way. It’s not a dusty tablet that you have to dust off every few years. DG: Describe what we’re seeing here. BV: We’re in Ojai, in this beautiful place, a kind of a meadow with mostly dry grasses, but there’s a lot of interesting variegated aspects to this hillside with oak trees and then beyond to the mountains. It’s very beautiful and inspiring. We’re creating the last leg of a journey that Mary has been on. The angel Gabriel came to her to inform her that she was going to be receiving the Son of God in her womb. That’s a pretty powerful moment for anybody. I’m looking at it from a slightly broader perspective than just simply the Christian version. Right now we need to be focused not on people’s differences but on our similarities. So many religions at the core are so much alike. They’re all connected with being human, what it means to be human, being born and dying, the human experience. This piece will have multiple resonances with various people in the world, whether they’re religious or not. That’s important for me. In an age where there’s so much violence that’s been perpetrated by people who are from various religious

being shot now), we have Mary giving birth. Birth. Fertility. The feminine principle in the universe. That’s on the north choir aisle. On the south choir aisle we’re going to have the Martyrs, the exact opposite. It’s about death and destruction. It’s about persecution, and ultimately it’s about transcendence. The question I had asked myself in the Martyr’s piece was, “What would you give your life for?” Wherever else there’s conflict, people are giving their lives—literally, right now, at this moment, to make sure their culture continues. It’s a very topical thing. I’m focusing on this positive kind of message: What do want to go to your grave? What are you going to leave behind? What is your legacy? DG: How does it feel to touch so many lives? BV: It’s a privilege, something you don’t take lightly. Just one person can change a life. Something you say. Something you do. A stranger offers you a seat on the bus, and then he says something. Your life can be changed from that. You don’t have to go to a giant sermon by a spiritual leader. Sometimes you just need a total stranger to say something and all of a sudden, it clicks! And you’re off and running. It’s a beautiful, beautiful thing. I really take that very seriously. You have to respect the people who have given you the privilege of sitting in a place called the studio and have money from somewhere; some patron gives you a job. And you got to really be aware of what that means. That’s a kind of sacrifice—someone is giving you that time. v For more information about Bill Viola, log on to billviola.com. Top to bottom: Viola directing Mary and Elizabeth as the cousins embrace following Mary’s three-day journey; handson guidance; behind the camera, Viola puts 40 years of video art experience to work. How? With his trademarked Smile21® System. Dr. Ziv’s Smile21® system is a unique combination of cosmetic and neuromuscular dental procedures that can rejuvenate your entire face—helping you look and feel years younger. if you find yourself clenching or grinding your teeth, or you may notice that your teen are worn down, chipped, or flat, you may be a good candidate for Smile 21®. By restoring your teeth back to their youthful dimensions change in facial support creates an instant appearance of a facelift. worn down teeth can cause loss of facial structure and gradual shortening of the lower third of the face leading to deep wrinkles and jowls. Smile 21 ® can make you look 10-15 years younger in a few short visits by actually restoring the former youthful length of your face. Many of our Smile 21 ® treatments are achieved with “no-prep” custom detailed porcelain veneers called Enamelettes. “No-prep” meaning: no drilling, no injections, no pain, and no removal of existing teeth. Studies have shown that if you have a beautiful healthy white smile you are perceived to be more successful, attractive, intelligent and wealthier. Transform yourself with a sparkling, whiter, brighter smile and bring back the beautiful youthful you!

Suspended Disbelief Danger, beauty, and the defiance of physical law. Aerial theater takes flight in Ventura By andrea kitay
A
s midnight approached at Paramount Studios, in New York, the final hour of the Taurus World Stunt Awards show, the air crackled with excitement. For the 1,800 movers and shakers gathered at the stunt industry’s leading annual event, the evening had already proven a success. The show, highlighted by a gala extravaganza created by performers and technicians from the aerial theater company AiRealistic, had wowed the crowd. Could the finale be any better? Now, in a moment of unprecedented drama, a crane bearing a piano and a pianist in fluttering coattails appeared in the sky and panned across the crowd, stopping in front of Paramount’s famous water tower. As the music died away, the pianist reached up and pulled a snap-shackle, unhooking the piano from its perch. As the crowd gasped, the piano plummeted 80 feet and smashed to the ground, followed by the pianist, who plunged off the crane and, tethered to a guard rope, rolled seven times, finishing with a perfect “layout” over the heads of the guests. If there was any doubt that the company hired to perform such an out-
rageous feat had reached its creative and technical limits, AiRealistic’s inaugural show laid them to rest. “I’m really excited by the combination of danger, beauty, and defiance of physical law,” said Gregg Curtis, an AiRealistic founding member and head of the Circus and Flying School, now headquartered in Ventura. “If we can stimulate our audience by beauty, and puzzle them at the same time by the reality they see in front of their eyes, we can create a moment of sustained bliss. It’s during that moment that we present our greatest gift: the sublime suspension of disbelief.” AiRealistic, begun in 2003 by a group of like-minded artists endowed with both creative juices and technical savvy, has flourished since its inception. The core team brings together unlikely and exceptional talents: professional rock climbing guides, national gymnastics champions, former Cirque du Soleil performers, professional dancers, and even a Fulbright Scholar in the Arts. Though it’s tempting to compare AiRealistic’s performances with those of the better-known Cirque du Soleil—dazzling rope acrobatics at impossible heights, for instance—AiRealistic specializes in creating what they call theater,

acrobatics and stunts as a vehicle for the art of storytelling. “There are many incredible companies in the world today, doing many incredible things, but we’re the only ones doing it the way we do,” said Curtis. Since its radical gala performance, the company has put on site-specific performances worldwide, including shows at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the WTA Championships in Qatar, Los Angeles Philharmonic Conductor Gustavo Dudamel’s inaugural performance, and on the ABC show “Dancing With The Stars.” Back home in Ventura, both a handful of the company’s professionals and students
the Circus and Flying School is to help new cast members develop a full set of skills. “A fully developed AiRealistic artist will be an amazing acrobat, an expressive dancer, a powerful actor, and an adept rigger,” explains Gregg Curtis’s wife, Carmen, a performer and instructor in her own right. And like most circus performers, the art is part of the family’s daily life. Once settled into their new Ventura home, the couple rigged their garage with ropes and fabrics for their seven-yearold daughter. With the garage door standing open, neighborhood kids were soon part of the gang, and Carmen found herself training them.
“If we can stimulate our audience by beauty, and puzzle them at the same time by the reality they see in front of their eyes, we can create a moment of sustained bliss.” from the Circus and Flying School gave their own performance at this year’s annual Westside Artwalk opening. Riggers strung supporting cables, ropes, and brightly-colored fabric from the heaviest branches of a tree; dramatic lighting and a twilight performance created the natural setting the company hoped to achieve. Though the company employs specialists, part of the purpose of 36

work to be functional, active, and different. The community is small enough to be accessible but big enough to be relevant on a much larger scale.” But innovation brings risks. Among the company’s more dangerous feats was its first, involving 19 performers and technicians linked near the top of a five-story building. Three separate mechanical/pulley systems and ropes connected the performers in a counter-balanced relationship. “One missed clip or unlocked carabiner and any one of the performers could have taken a horrible fall,” said Gregg Curtis. “At the top of the show, another performer and I run and jump out of a window and freefall two stories before getting caught by another performer who had us on a loose belay. Bang! In an instant, the performer who had been standing on the floor a moment ago has now met me two stories up on the building.” In July and August of this year, 19 members of the company and an additional 14 European dancers, actors, and acrobats converged in Bregenz, Austria at the Bregenzer Festival to participate in the French Revolutioninspired opera “André Chénier,” held on the Bregenz Opera House’s famous floating stage. As usual, AiRealistic has the most challenging role in the production: recreating the decadent ambiance of the period and staging an aerial ballet atop the head of an 80-foot-tall sculpture. For those of you hoping to run away and join the circus, AiRealistic now provides training in their Ventura studio, in three specialties: Aerial Theater, Rigging, and Aerial Instruction. Other contact offices are in Los Angeles and New York City. v Please note: Local members of AiRealistic will return from their summer program at the Bregenz Opera House at the end of August; Ventura classes will resume at the beginning of the school year. a petite pendant This petite pendant is only 1.1 inches long. It was made for a lady who loves beautiful jade. I was commissioned to find a stone that would match the jade gems in a pair of earrings, and then to combine it with diamonds that had been passed down through the family. So I designed a 1/3-carat diamond pendant, which holds up a strand of diamonds suspending the jade. The gem settings are very secure, yet when viewed face-on the mounting almost disappears! Please come by and let us design the jewel of your dreams! “I don’t copy what’s new... I create what’s next!” —Bob Lynn
