EDITOR’S NOTE

BUILDING COMMUNITY

F

ramed in the context of an email thread, her

reply was anything but epoch-making. I’d written the James Beard Award-winning cookbook author Anna Thomas to gauge her interest in an article: to see if she was familiar with Ventana and if she’d abide our cameras and questions. And indeed she was—and she would—and not only was the Ojai resident familiar with this publication, she wrote, “it arrives faithfully in my mailbox and I have a lot of fun taking a look—and often finding friends!” A simple statement? Yes and no. Though the neuroscience of well-being is still be in its infancy, studies have proven one thing conclusively: friendship is good for the health. People need more than food/water/shelter; we thrive on interpersonal bonds, a sense of community. Not necessarily geographic boundaries, but a consciousness of identity. And since this humble publication—this monthly showcase of your friends and neighbors, and perhaps of you—fosters a spirit of community, we like to think it matters. Brett Jordan echoes a similar sentiment in our interview on page 13. Articulate and insightful, the contemporary furniture designer describes success not in terms of financial gain but of a friendly get-together: “cooking and having fun and talking story. I don’t think it’s going to get any better than that.” I tend to agree. And I believe it’s the same everywhere in the world. I spent part of November abroad, and on one bright

afternoon shared a few beers with a young architect who’d recently returned to his South American home country after studying at SCI-Arc, in Los Angeles. He had every intention of staying here. Our quality of life thrilled him. Yet he turned his back on the American Dream because he just couldn’t get used to the aloofness of life in L.A. I suggested he try again—this time in a more closely knit place, like Ventura County. Now, to be sure, this county is too large and too diverse to fit into a Norman Rockwell painting. All 850,000 or so of us inhabitants aren’t going to gather at the tavern to hoist a pint in unison, or congregate in a local church or at a community quilting bee. We don’t cross paths daily on a single main street and nod howdy. Still, the notion of community in a relatively widespread and diverse setting like Ventura County is no cock-and-bull story, and these pages document some of the players, some of the contributors. As with any window, of course, there are blind spots; so I’ll say it again: don’t hesitate to email me with tips and suggestions. Ventana may not illustrate the comprehensive history of Ventura County in the early 2000s, but it does offer a glimpse of our modern life. Thanks for taking a look—and for being part of the community. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

CAMARILLO CATWALK

Art meets fashion in SCIART’s Blackboard Gallery By Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer

S

tudio Channel Islands Art Center’s 2013 Fashion Show put Ventura County couture in the spotlight. From the flutes of champagne to the throbbing disco beats to the shiny black runway that ran straight down the middle of the Blackboard Gallery, SCIART made every effort to create an occasion worthy of New York fashion week. Attendees were in an appropriately festive spirit: sequins sparkled, jewelry twinkled, heels clicked, and the gallery was abuzz with conversation and excitement. Of course, the real stars of the show were the fashion designers, all Ventura County locals. Dozens of pieces of wearable art from 34 artists came down the runway, and they truly ran the gamut—from Patrick Fisher’s urban-edgy print tees to the ethereal silks of Sarah Ake and Smadar Knobler to gorgeous knits by Trish Lange and Julie Kornblum. Dolores Barrett, Aimee French, Connie Gunderson, and Eco Luxury Designs were among the many artists who offered up jewelry, scarves, purses, and other accessories. Men were not left out, thanks to silk ties by SCIART Executive Director Karin Geiger. Glittery evening wear (Michelle Sotelo) and dramatic gowns (Michelle Herbert) made for a show-stopping finale. Whether your tastes are sassy or sophisticated, our local designers deliver with style.

TREE CONTEMPORARY MINIMALIST BRETT JORDAN ON INTELLIGENT FURNITURE DESIGN, FAMILIAL INFLUENCES, AND THE DELICATE BALANCE OF ART AND BUSINESS.

INTERVIEW BY RYAN A. SMITH PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEBRA DIPAOLO

rett Jordan swings open a solid pivot door and welcomes me into BWilliam Design. The old oiling machinery building faces Ventura Avenue, though we could be in any stateside industrial neighborhood once the oversized door seals out wafts of grilled meats and the street noise; now, subtler hints of fine wood and leather replace the scent of The Avenue. What a space. Huge tables, a sophisticated and comfortable-looking loveseat, thin wall accent shelves, hardy bookshelves, and a raw, towering, freshly milled tree slab all stare back at me. It’s somewhat daunting for a freelance writer without an inkling of design knowledge, standing beside one-of-a-kind furniture that’s well beyond my budget. It’s a busy day for Brett, surely one filled with a few existential ruminations. He has this Q&A to sit through, a video shoot up next, and Ventana’s photo shoot later in the afternoon—then tomorrow he’s off to UCLA for open-heart surgery. We move to the low-ceilinged office for better acoustics and sit in a couple very intriguing chairs. David Oliver, Brett’s assistant, joins us for the chat, and off we go.

DECEMBER 2013

BRETT W. JORDAN

Why furniture?

My brother was an architect; my dad was an engineer and an architect. My mom, Elayne Jordan (elaynejordandesign.com), is an interior designer. It was natural for me. Giant architectural spaces influenced me, and I was doing ceramic sculpture, but they were small. The transition for me became: ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to build a piece for that house? The sofa in there looks terrible. It doesn’t meet the architecture. I’d love to aesthetically create something that blends in and works.’

What was your first piece?

The first piece I built out of this studio was an 11-foot-long dining table with eight chairs. It was out of solid walnut, for a woman from Ojai. She wanted the table to stretch from her family to the next family to the next, to be massive but still narrow enough where you don’t feel like you’re four feet across. It’s very rare that somebody comes to me like she did and says, You’re the artist, I want it solid wood, these are my parameters. Go.

Do you begin by considering form, function, or materials? I’d love to use that classic statement, ‘Form follows function.’ But the reality is: the people we deal with are high-end and generally come in after their house has been set up, so they already have a wood choice or a material in mind. If you really listen to clients’ wants, and then you have a space and a material, it really boils it down. It’s an equation.

How do commissions balance with more personal projects?

We build cabinets to pay our bills, but when we get to build something

14

DECEMBER 2013

more personal, we’re as happy as can be. That’s the balance. I’ve been here almost 15 years and weathered a pretty nasty storm the past five, but the starving artist isn’t sexy at 46 years old.

Do materials help define your aesthetic?

My arborist friends might call us and have a beautiful slab of milled timber, and that slab immediately dictates a dining table, a coffee table, or a mantle so quickly, just by its shape. Then we build around it. David: Grain configuration is huge—the wood tells the story. If we’re working with super vertical grain, it’s going to read a line all the way across somebody’s kitchen, or if we’re working with really figured wood, it’s going to be the edge of some irregular coffee table or something. We’re reading wood all day long.

What are your preferred materials?

Mahogany and walnut. If I can get something like acacia, that’s a type of walnut look I like to use. There are other mahogany-esque types of wood that I like, but I’m not really into plain maple. Maple doesn’t turn me on; it’s not sexy.

Is it always wood?

No, we do wood, steel, glass, upholstery, leather—we like to mix as many things as we can in a piece. We don’t use a lot of metal; I think metal, right off the bat, makes it too masculine and cold. I like it to be as textural and tactile as it can be, because your senses are there. If I could, everything would have a smell coming out of it, and a sound, so it subliminally attacked all of your senses. My favorite thing would be to build people one-off things

TOP, FROM LEFT: A liveedged silky oak (Grevillea robusta), single slab top dining table; the “Savage Wall,” rough tools used for upcycling curbside finds. RIGHT: A Ventura living room showcases the scope of Jordan’s work. Subtle details create a visual thread, a sense of continuity that ties the space together. Seen here: side table, coffee table, handcrafted doors, dining table, and large sliding door. A grid/lattice pattern in the foyer carries into adjoining rooms; the richness of naturally downed walnut lends to a harmonious flow that works throughout the home.

for their living rooms that have 10 purposes: it’s a giant sculptural nightlight, but it’s also a functional bookcase, and it acts as an inspirational piece to their kid who’s trying to learn rhythm in music, and so on.

Do you see the masculinity in your designs?

Absolutely. And that’s probably a pitfall. Being a guy, I like darker, hard woods, but I try to lift everything off the ground and sleek it out. I don’t like it fat and chunky; I try to give it a feminine edge. But the only way to really bring true femininity in is to throw a curve in, and that combination of bringing a curve to something masculine and hard is the ultimate challenge in contemporary minimalist furniture.

|

What is success for you?

(Brett looks to David) How would you define my style? I’d love to hear it. David: It’s complex minimalist, which is pretty hard to pull off. It sometimes looks simple and plain but it’s actually very complex.

Having friends come over for dinner and bring food. Having a barbecue and 20 people show up, hanging until one o’clock in the morning, cooking and having fun and talking story. I don’t think it’s going to get any better than that. One thing I’ve learned recently is that your mind can only hold one thought at a time—it might as well be positive, right? v

Who and what have been significant influences?

BWILLIAM DESIGN, 1631 N. Ventura Ave. bwilliamdesign.com, 805/477.8356

How do you define BWilliam style?

16

[My influences] were hugely architectural and religious. It was churches, Le Corbusier… Ronchamp had a huge influence on me. And the Japanese, they did the best joinery. They created their own tools, made their own joints: obscure wood joints, unsurpassed male and female tenons. They didn’t need any glue; everything was wedge-fit. They could build a house without one screw or a piece of glue, and it would withstand an 8.0 earthquake. My mom and my dad were also huge influences, by taking me to see Gaudi’s work, Le Corbusier’s work, Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, to just all extremes of design and interiors and aesthetics.

the quiet

champion Clyde Reynolds approaches a personal turning point BY MARK STORER PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARYANDPIERRESILVA.COM

c

lyde Reynolds was in Los Angeles County in 1986 when he heard that Ventura County was looking to create a nonprofit to serve its mentally ill and homeless. Recent federal machinations had decimated programs that worked with such people, and now it was up to states, counties, and cities to do the heavy lifting. Ventura County had money to contract services, but no one to do the work. The former Baptist preacher was intrigued. He’d grown up on a dairy farm in Clovis, just outside of Fresno, and had a small town sense of what California could be. Much has changed since his early days in the Central Valley, however. Recent economic convulsions have jarred the whole state, of course, but Reynolds doesn’t seem to have paid much attention to that. Not that he’s ignoring the reality—he’s just busy trying to change it for a group of people who might otherwise not have a voice. “The goal was to set up programs that would incorporate into a local organization based on what Progress Foundation in San Francisco was doing,” Reynolds said. He had a friend at Progress, and they agreed to provide the start-up needs for an organization here. “The contracts provided three programs for the county: one for a socialization center, one for

a transitional residential treatment program, and one for a crisis residential treatment program.” As simple as that, Reynolds was hired as the Ventura County project director and helped form a community advisory board that, in November of 1988, became Turning Point Foundation. For 25 years, he has shepherded programs through the foundation that have helped turn lives around, given people hope, and a provided a fresh start. He’ll turn 70 years old soon and figures that within the next year he’ll retire, leaving huge shoes to fill. “It’s an amazing program that not a lot of people know about,” said Nick Deitch, the president of Turning Point’s board of directors and senior principal at Main Street Architects in Ventura. “Some of that is related to the inherent fear that the community brings to the whole topic of mental illness and homelessness.” That fear manifest itself in many ways, including the 1988 firebombing of one of Turning Point’s transitional houses in Ventura. The organization had successfully lobbied to purchase a home for just that use, and neighborhood residents were not pleased. Several days after the plan was approved, the house was firebombed.

“Clyde is a quiet champion,” said Deitch. “He doesn’t try to attract a lot of attention. I understand that, he has work to do and that’s why he needs a working board with people with lots of passion.” Reynolds may be a quiet champion, but he too has passion for the job. “When I was working as a pastor in the American Baptist Church, I came to Los Angeles to be involved in a more specialized ministry setting up a crisis intervention hot line called the Contact Help Line Clinic. I realized that what I loved was education and pastoral counseling, and so when I left the formal ministry, I looked for jobs with that specialty.” Reynolds’ faith is still quite a prominent part of his life, but his calling was elsewhere. That all led to a job in the San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center, and it was there that Reynolds heard about what was happening in Ventura County. Since he came aboard, Turning Point Foundation has reached into a community that most people ignore and helped restore individuals to productive and happy lives, or as close to that as they can get. One of the foundation’s more inventive programs is the River Haven Project. Between 2003 and 2004, the city of Ventura wanted to move the homeless population living in the Ventura River bottom out of that area. “The city invited the community to come and talk to them about what to do,” said Reynolds. “The people who lived in the river bottom came to the meeting, and they weren’t happy about being moved out of what they considered their home. Turning Point worked with a group of about 30 people, and the city manager challenged this group to come up with some ideas.” Reynolds said the group came up with mission agreements, a governing constitution, and a plan to use area campgrounds where they would live in community together and move between campgrounds frequently enough to obey the rules. “After about nine months of this kind of nomadic life,” Reynolds said, “they stayed together but kind of ran out of options.” Based on the group’s dedication and its desire to stay together, the city then donated a piece of land near Ventura Harbor and Turning Point helped the group move into a tent city there. But that wasn’t the end of the story. Turning Point then raised money and purchased a series of 21 geodesic domes and a larger dome that acts as a community living center. “They have chemical toilets and running water. It’s supposed to be a transitional place, and we ask people who stay there to come up with a plan for ending their homelessness,” Reynolds explained. “We’ve had a great deal of success.” There are currently 23 resi-

dents at River Haven. And while the project was not specifically designed for people with mental illness, Reynolds estimates that between 50 and 70 percent of the people they serve struggle with some sort of mental illness. “For a number of years, Turning Point was a kind of stealth organization, just laying low and doing its work,” said Deitch. “I remember meeting Clyde when he came to a Downtown Association meeting to tell us that he was going to work with these people. It was not a happy meeting. There was a lot of fear and a lot of concern.” But Deitch said his goal has been to get Turning Point onto the radar, to be more visible in the community. “Last year, we served over 800 individuals,” Reynolds said. “It’s a real challenge. We realized that there are times when we’re

helping people stay homeless. Our philosophy has changed—we focus on people we can engage in ending their homeless situation.” He went on to explain that some homeless citizens simply have no interest in change: they don’t want to come in off the streets. “Part of it is just understanding that none of us change until we’re ready. But we’ve got plenty to do with people who do want help.” In many ways, Clyde Reynolds is Turning Point Foundation, and Deitch acknowledges that replacing him is not possible, but succeeding him is. “Somewhere out there is the right person for us, and we’re right for them. This work will go on. It has to.” v Detailed info on Turning Point Foundation: turningpointfoundation.org

SLO-town the fast train to

Riding the rails to America’s “Happiest City” BY MARYANN HAMMERS

I

abhor flying and am also not terribly fond of driving.

Lucky for me, San Luis Obispo— dubbed our nation’s “happiest city” by National Geographic, USA Today, and even Oprah—is just a scenic train ride away. The city of San Luis Obispo enthusiastically promotes its carless convenience, touting the town’s walkability and bike-friendliness. The SLO Car Free web page (slocarfree.org) includes bike trail maps, bike-rental deals, and other discounts—including 20 percent off an Amtrak train ticket. I stepped aboard the Pacific Surfliner on a cool, misty morning. The conductor stored my carryon for me and directed me upstairs for a better view. I had sprung for a business-class ticket (an extra $19), and that car was nearly empty, except for a college student riding the rails on a cross-country journey and a couple of champagne-sipping middle-aged women on a giggly girlfriends getaway. The journey from Ventura County is worth it for the scenery alone: The train hugs the shoreline, along steep bluffs and beaches without a footprint. The secluded stretch of sand through Vandenberg Air Force Base—not accessible to civilians—was particularly gorgeous. Though I had brought my laptop with the intention of getting some work done (WiFi is free on the train, and every seat has an electric outlet), I ended up reclining my seat, sipping coffee and nibbling on a muffin, and just enjoying the view. PHOTOS COURTESY SAN LUIS OBISPO CHAMBER After about four hours, the train pulled into the San Luis Obispo station. It was such a pleasant journey, I was genuinely sorry to step off the train. Wheeling my carryon a few leafy blocks past cute bungalow homes, I quickly reached downtown. Granada, a chic hotel and hip restaurant/nightspot/spa, was to be my crash pad for the next couple of days. Though the hotel opened just over a year ago, this was no sterile, ultra-modern edifice: The picturesque brick building and former brothel was built nearly a century ago as a hospital, but never admitted 38

a single patient. It was located next door to the Elmo Theater, an old vaudeville house (since demolished). In the 1920s, rooms were rented, ahem, by the hour. More recently, the building served as an old folks’ home. The hotel’s current owner, Kimberly Walker, had been using the lower level of the building as a small wine bar. When she learned that the entire building was for sale, she leapt at the opportunity to renovate and restore it to a hotel, with exposed brick walls, heavy wood doors, and original hardwood floors. She expanded the wine bar to become a high-end bistro, with outdoor seating under leafy trees, fire pits, and oldfashioned street lamps. My second-floor room was super small yet had a luxe feel, with a fireplace, soft robe, luxurious bedding, and fancy amenities. From my Juliette balcony I observed the downtown bustle one floor below. A silver-haired, pony-tailed, tie-dyed hippie rode by on a vintage bicycle, dragging behind him a bulky baby stroller holding a guitar. Speaking of bikes, SLO is a great place to ride one. Granada lends wheels to guests who want to cruise around downtown or to the nearby winery, or pedal along Bill Roalman Bike Boulevard or the Railroad Recreation Trail. Even better: soon the City-to-Sea Trail will connect downtown SLO with Avila Beach. On the first Thursday of every month, hundreds of cyclists circle downtown, wearing costumes. Why? Just cuz. Downtown SLO is compact, pedestrian-friendly, and just plain cute. A creek runs through the center of town, with benches scattered about under trees. I was enchanted by the whimsical mom ’n‘ pop shops, many with a natural or eco vibe, such as the Secret Garden Organic Herb Shop, with dried herbs, teas, and rustic yard art. It’s next door to

the Birkenstock place and a few steps from the Flip Flop Shop. I paid 50 cents for a ride aboard the Old SLO Trolley. The cable car circles downtown Thursday evenings (and on some months of the year, Friday and Saturday, too), clanging along Monterey Street, past the art deco theater, record (vinyl) shop, and used book shop, stopping at the Mission San Luis Obispo, Farmers Market, Madonna Inn, and other popular neighborhoods. It’s a great way to get the lay of the land. On Thursdays, when the huge Farmers Market/street fair takes over town, everyone lines up for beef brisket and barbecue. But downtown dining options the other days of the week are eclectic and fun, many with an organic farm-to-table approach— just what you’d hope for in a hip college town surrounded by agriculture. Big Sky, one of my favorites, had an open-air feel and casual wood tables. The place serves up such improbable combos as eggplant with chipotle and watermelon with feta. Next door, Sidecar specializes in sophisticated burgers—think brioche buns, maple ketchup, and carmelized shallots. My favorite eatery was Lux Red. Its creative late-night menu features tapas, pizzas, “picnic boards” (meat and cheese plates), and other satisfying smallish meals for around five dollars. It was a warm evening, so I chose an outside patio table, where I enjoyed a black-bean avocado fritter and goat-cheese stuffed piquillo peppers. With the live music and a friendly Ashton Kutcher-lookalike server, this was one happy meal. In no time, my getaway had come to an end, and I found myself wheeling my carryon back to the train station for the ride south. Happy to report that the view was just as scenic in the opposite direction. v

Paso Robles, smack in the middle of California, has a close-knit character born of isolation. Kitchen Communal Centered on a sociable island, epicure Anna Thomas’s kitchen has plenty of room for the awardwinning cookbook author to work while holiday guests sip and chat. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY CINDY PITOU BURTON

B

estselling cookbook author, screenwriter, teacher, and

James Beard Foundation award-winner Anna Thomas may not be an actress, but she certainly pounds the boards well in her beautifully designed main stage kitchen in Ojai. The grandmaster of her domain, the fast-talking, whip-smart Thomas often welcomes friends and family to the heartbeat of her house—a light-filled East End aerie redesigned, not surprisingly, around its culinary focal point. On a warm Sunday afternoon in November, I popped into Anna’s kitchen for a visit. I remember her first cookbook, “The Vegetarian Epicure,” from my days as a vegetarian hippie chick, particularly its cover art: a design copied by many in the early-seventies. Without missing a beat, the hostess with the mostess whipped up old-school grilled cheese and ligonberry jam sandwiches on Dave’s Killer Bread, served with beautiful slices of Asian pear gathered at the Ojai Farmers Market that morning. Lunch preparation was accomplished while explaining the ins and outs of her kitchen design, what soup and dessert (recipes below) she planned on making for a few friends who would be coming by later

that evening, and bantering with Teddy, one of her two grown sons, an artist who was home visiting from L.A. for the weekend, about whether or not he approved of her new blue jeans. Talk about multi-tasking. “When I bought this house eight years ago, it was the worst, ugliest house in the world,” Anna emphasized, adding, “but it had this view that I love. Everything was wrong about it … except where it was.” During the three years of planning and remodeling it took to create the minimal, open and airy kitchen/dining/living room space in the 2,600-square-foot house, Anna lived in the adjacent 1,000-square-foot guest studio. To make it habitable, she did a swift overhaul, which included a tiny, 81-inch IKEA kitchen. “I actually got to like it, even though I was having PTSD from downsizing from an 8,500-square-foot home,” she admits. But it was a move that she eventually acclimated to and learned to love. In fact, it is where the idea for her award-winning cookbook “Love Soup” was born. “I would make a great pot of soup, send an email to friends saying ‘Soup kitchen is open,’ and people would come over and bring other dishes. It made for a wonderful, casual, delightful evening.” We sat at the dining table decorated with bowls of beautiful

RED LENTIL AND SQUASH SOUP

Red lentils are actually pink, and turn a rich gold when cooked. Here, they are combined with a sweet winter squash, spices, and a touch of lemon. (Serves 6-7) 1 generous cup red lentils (200 g.) 1 small butternut squash, 1½ lbs. whole 2 medium onions, chopped (450 g.) 1 ½ Tbs. olive oil 1 ½ tsp. sea salt 1 medium yam or sweet potato, 6 oz. 2 Tbs. minced fresh ginger 1 Tbs. cumin seed, toasted and ground 1 tsp. turmeric ¼–½ tsp. crushed red peppers, more to taste 4–5 cups light vegetable broth 2-3 Tbs. fresh lemon juice Rinse lentils and combine with 4 cups water and one teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and boil gently for about 20 minutes, skimming off any foam that rises to the top. Meanwhile, cut the squash in half, seed it, and put the halves cut side down on a baking sheet. Roast at 375˚ for 45 min-

utes or until soft. At the same time, sauté chopped onion in olive oil with a big pinch of salt, stirring often until it is soft and turning golden brown. Peel and dice the yam. When the lentils are just tender, add diced yam, minced ginger, cumin seed, turmeric, crushed red pepper, and 4 cups of vegetable broth. Simmer together, covered, for another 25 minutes. As soon as the roasted squash is ready, scoop it out of its skin—you should have about 2 ½ cups of cooked squash—and add it to the soup. Cook until everything is soft. Add another cup of vegetable broth if the soup seems too thick. You can stir up the soup and leave it this way, with its rough, rustic texture. Or, if you want a smooth soup, remove from heat, let cool slightly, then purée in a blender. Return soup to pot and bring it back to a simmer. Stir in lemon juice a little at a time, tasting as you go. Correct the seasoning with more salt as needed. This is also the time when you might decide to amp up the red pepper a bit, if you like a more spicy soup.

CHOCOLATE GRAND MARNIER CAKE

The cake Thomas once made for Julia Child, who declared it “a perfect dessert.” (Serves 8) 9 oz. best quality bittersweet chocolate, chopped ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick) 2 Tbs. Grand Marnier ½ tsp. pure vanilla extract grated zest of 2 oranges 4 medium eggs, room temperature ½ cup + 1 Tbs. sugar powdered sugar for the top ripe, red strawberries Butter an eight-inch springform cake pan. Line the bottom with a circle of parchment cut to fit. Preheat oven to 350˚. Combine chopped chocolate, butter, Grand Marnier, and vanilla in a heavy-bottom pan and melt slowly over low heat, stirring until the mixture is smooth. Allow to cool to lukewarm, then stir in grated orange zest. Beat eggs and sugar with an electric mixer until they are smooth, thick, and pale (at least seven minutes). The beaten eggs

should fall off the lifted beaters in fat ribbons. Fold a few tablespoons of beaten eggs into chocolate mixture, then fold in the rest. Be sure the chocolate is evenly incorporated into the foamy eggs. Stop as soon as it is. Put batter into the prepared cake pan, place pan on a baking sheet, and bake in the center of oven for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with only moist crumbs attached. You can cover the cake with a loose piece of foil for the last 10 minutes if you feel the edges are getting very crisp. Allow the cake to cool a few minutes; it will start to fall in the center. Gently press down on the edges to bring them more or less in line with the middle. Leave cake to cool completely. Run a knife around the edge of the cake and remove the springform. Invert the cake onto a rack or plate and peel away the parchment. Sift powdered sugar over the cake—or drizzle a dark chocolate glaze over it and scatter pomegranate seeds as seen in photos—then transfer to a platter.

squashes, pomegranates, and persimmons that would soon become part of a harvest meal. The newly minted minimalist was apologetic about a few stacks of papers on the table. “I’ve come to really love having a quieter, less filled-up space around me,” she noted, explaining that she enjoys the calm that comes with living in an uncluttered house. But there was a storm before the calm: Anna had to make “5,000 decisions to make everything work and achieve her goals” in her dream kitchen. “It’s a design I thought about in my other house,” she recalled. That house was a very traditional style, shingle abode where she and her former husband raised their two sons. Everyone always gathered in the large kitchen—which included a sofa. The cook wanted a good, hardworking kitchen that was completely open to the house and acted as a social hub. She also wanted it to look “deceptively simple,” which meant that every detail, from storage to usage considerations, was carefully thought out. Thomas, along with Chicago-/Pasadena-based architect John Chipman, came up with a design that includes a massive 13-foot-long island, which needed to suit both the living room and the kitchen. The custom-designed stainless steel hood was an important focal point, too, since it figures prominently in the living room as well. The handsome mix of materials in the design includes custom-made stainless steel counters and drawers, and handmade cherry wood cabinets. “This was my big art project; I was involved in every detail, including going to the stone yard to select the soapstone, which has a feeling of depth,” she proudly noted.

Becoming a cookbook author happened “by accident,” according to Thomas, while attending film school in her youth. Her first book was a huge success, selling over a million copies, and went into more than 25 printings, a heady experience for a college student. “I was so thrilled. Royalty checks started coming … and coming … and coming,” she remembered. “Being in film school was 24/7; it was hard. One day, I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard and saw my book filling the window in the old Pickwick Bookstore. In those days, long before the Internet, it was—‘Look at that, that is really cool!’” The book was a “conjunction of things,” but also the result of necessity being the mother of invention: Anna was learning to cook and becoming a vegetarian, and there wasn’t much available on the subject. She would experiment and cook for college friends, who egged her on to do a cookbook. Throughout her adult life, Anna continued her food writing,

along with screenwriting and working as a producer in the movie business. She currently teaches screenwriting one day a week at the American Film Institute. “Love Soup,” the cookbook that garnered the prestigious James Beard Foundation medal (one of two) proudly displayed in her kitchen, is her fourth book. “I really wanted to do a soup book,” she said. Her longtime publisher, though, wanted anything but a soup book—so Anna changed publishing houses. The tome she is working on currently will be a “Vegan Vegetarian Omnivore” book that tackles the question: Can we all sit down and have dinner together? “Everyone is going to eat the way they want to eat,” she stressed. “What’s more important is who is at the table.” She then concluded our visit with a universal truth, whether you eat paleo, gluten-free, vegetarian, or steak and potatoes: “Sitting down to eat together is the best thing going.” v The cookbooks and food writing of Anna Thomas: vegetarianepicure.com
