In the details
O
ne thing you should know about David Blackburn’s work is that it can crush your dreams. If you have any aspirations to become a master woodworker, divert your eyes from page 11. Or prepare to be humbled. This is not the sort of woodwork you look at and say, I could do that. This is genius stuff. And the best part? He works in his garage. A modest workshop in a modest home in a modest Ventura neighborhood. Which is just about perfect. If the artist David Blackburn lived in, say, Malibu or New York City, he’d be rich—and perhaps not so good-natured. Would he like to make some money off his work? Why, yes. And God knows he deserves it. His obsessively crafted sculptures—decorative boxes and furniture, vases, bowls, trays: everything he creates is a fine art sculpture—are otherworldly. But I’m quite sure that if money were taken out of the picture, David Blackburn would ultimately find himself back on the quest for the holy grail of wood. In third grade the boy was scrounging materials and building two-story wooden forts—on an Alaskan island devoid of trees. As a young man in 1967 he took an art appreciation class at Ventura College. That’s the extent of his formal training. And now, well, he works in his garage, shopping the Internet for exotic woods and turning them into fine art with a function. Shockingly detailed masterworks. There’s a table with a wooden “waterfall” cascading between coralwood burls.

A four-foot-tall heart-shaped jewelry chest rotates on a carved Belgium black marble base and comprises eight different kinds of wood, not to mention hidden inscriptions and secret compartments within secret compartments. We run a lot of art- and artist-related editorial content in Ventana. This piece, however, is a rare diversion in that we assigned it based solely on the work itself; the artist’s backstory is a mere bit player. As Blackburn says, “Wood tells its own story—I’m a microphone.” In the case of Joe Cardella (p. 31), our feature is a mix of the man, his home, his art, art in general, and a celebration of an audacious idea: to publish a magazine where every single page is an original work of art. And he did it. For 25 years. Eleven months a year, never missing a deadline. Again I’m humbled. At least I can relate to Ken McAlpine’s travel story (p. 28). Ken is a wordsmith. He has a way of juggling language to enhance his own dry sense of humor. It wasn’t enough for him to write about the swimming lizards of the Galapagos, or Darwin’s famous theory of evolution. Instead he considers becoming a Darwinian vigilante himself—for the good of all mankind, of course. And why not? Other audacious ideas have worked. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

The Tree That Never Dies Wood reader David Blackburn’s reclaimed genius By andrea kitay
Photos by Michael Robinson Chavez
I
Master woodworker David Blackburn in his Ventura garage/workshop
t’s common knowledge that genius often rears its head in youth. Sometimes it looks more like neurons run amuck than organized thought. Or simply the product of intense parental training, discipline enforced by structure, vis-a-vis the so-called Tiger Mother model. But when you’re talking about David Blackburn, you know you’ve met the real thing. So it comes as no surprise to learn that this Ventura-based, awardwinning artist has been obsessed with wood for as long as he can remember. A military brat, Blackburn’s family did the serviceman’s shuffle, moving frequently and living on military bases around the world. From New Orleans to Alaska to Japan, Blackburn spent afternoons and weekends scouting out bits of wood to forge into his latest project, from simple forts to intricate playhouses. Wood, any kind of wood, he tells me, earned a second look: gnarled logs from swamps, forked sticks from the forest, and an occasional piece of lumber scavenged from a public works shed. “Even in Alaska, on a desolate island with no trees, I was a scrounger. I made a two-story fort in third grade,” he chuckles. “Every six months or so the navy would come tear it all down.” To Blackburn, this was another opportunity. A new project to explore. A career and decades later, Blackburn is back on the hunt for the perfect piece of wood—the touch, the grain, the color. Nowadays his searches often take place on the Internet, where he has located exotic quilted maple, manzanita burl, and tiger wood burl. For a recent project, a table entitled “A River Runs Through,” he sourced a highly prized length of quilted maple to create the rippling look of a river and surrounded it with cocobolo, a tropical hardwood from the dalbergia tree, to create the shoreline. The table’s asymmetrical, gnarled legs are from a corkscrew willow tree he cut down outside his kitchen door. For Blackburn, his home has become his showcase. Standing in a corner of his living room, a four-foot-tall heart-shaped jewelry box is the first thing you notice. With 15 drawers, and sitting on a base of Belgian black marble, the massive jewelry box spins on an unseen axle and rod system. Blackburn explains that he used several types of wood and wood burl to create the box, opening each drawer to point out a successive line from First Corinthians 13, “Love Is,” he lasered inside. A hidden compartment is built into a larger hidden compartment. His garage doubles as workshop, and a quick peek inside reveals a vast array of woodworkdecember 2011

Opposite bottom: A “waterfall” cascades between “boulders” of coralwood burl on the same table. Opposite top: Utilizing budkeye burl with New Zealand paua shell, a tabletop (left) calls to mind the geometric designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. A sculpted jewelry chest titled True Love rotates on a base of Belgium black marble. Blackburn inscribed an attribute of love inside each drawer and overlaid burl woods with subtle touches of amethyst crystals on the back of the piece.

He’s still on the hunt for the perfectly textured burl, a knot on a tree branch or stump with a unique grain and color, the holy grail of woods. ing tools taking up most of the shop’s floor space: saws, sanders, chisels, and lengths of exotic and rare wood. It’s crowded, but renting an industrial space doesn’t make economic sense, he says. A large carving or custom-made piece of reflects hundreds of invested hours. This limits his customer base to those with disposable income, and a larger workspace doesn’t pencil out. But I wonder, after such a long time laboring over a piece, how can he part with it. “I had to get over the idea a long time ago that I would miss the pieces once they sold,” he explains. “I love them, I have archived them, of course, and I enjoy making them. But I would like to make some money, too.” Blackburn’s return to woodworking came after a job layoff 15 years ago, when he saw a cigar humidor. It became his inspiration. With no formal training other than an Art
december 2011
Appreciation class he took at Ventura College in 1967, he returned to working with wood—as he had as a child. But this time, elaborately crafted boxes replaced forts. These were followed by sculpted bowls, vases, and inlaid boxes. Finally, he moved to furniture and larger items. In a way, Blackburn has come full circle. He’s still on the hunt for the perfectly textured burl, a knot on a tree branch or stump with a unique grain and color, the holy grail of woods. A few years ago, he started adding hidden drawers and spaces. “Now when people pick up one of my pieces, they want to know where the hidden drawer is,” he tells me. As Blackburn reclaims both wood and his past, you can’t help but feel you’ve had a brush with genius. v More online at dbartwood.net

“I could not have dreamed up a better surgeon or all around experience. I took my time with my decisions and he was so accommodating and insightful. He and his staff were thoughtful, compassionate and very well educated. I feel like I made the best decision I could have made by choosing Dr. Pickart. My surgery went off without a hitch, my results are more than I could have ever imagined, and the care and compassion that I received through it all were wonderful. I would recommend Dr. Pickart to anyone who is thinking about a cosmetic procedure. Call for a consultation (805) 654-8800

For more than three decades Dr. Ziv, Westlake Village DDS, has been recognized for his use of cutting-edge technology and his pursuit of dental excellence. Sometimes this needed boost of total health, both physical and emotional, can begin with making changes in the way we and others see us; whether it be by enhancing or correcting facial features, or improving body contours or imperfections. Tailing Darwin Ventura author K en M c A lpine follows the path of Charles Darwin through the rotating door of Earth’s Museum of Evolution—the Galapagos Islands
C
harles Darwin was an eager and observant naturalist. Should you have the good fortune to travel to the Galapagos Islands you should adopt Darwin’s penchant for keen observation, for upon these famed Ecuadorian isles you will see many strange and wondrous things—lizards that swim, penguins at the equator, cute little blood-sucking finches—and if you pay close attention you too may grasp certain life-changing lessons. The Galapagos, you see, are a unique classroom, the closest thing in this world to Eden. Imagine a zoo you have visited. Now do away with the cages, so that lion, black mamba, and bull elephant wander freely, and man, too, wanders among them without fear of harm, excepting perhaps the exceptionally stupid—Hey, Jimbo, watch what happens when I pull the elephant’s tail—in which case you are rewarded by the sight of natural selection played out before your eyes. So it is in the Galapagos, where you might walk upon a sunset beach and have a bird alight on your arm or a sea lion wobble over and nibble your foot. Should you be maliciously inclined—and content to absorb substantial fines and prison time—you could walk right up to a marine iguana or a blue-footed booby and poke it in the eye. Though it sometimes goes unmentioned in high school evolution classes, Darwin himself treated the Galapagos denizens with precisely such rude familiarity. He rode the tortoises, plucked finches like plums for lunch, and slung at least one marine iguana repeatedly into the sea, watching in amazement as, each time, it returned directly to him as if anxious for another 28 | ventana |december 2011
chance at whirly-gig flight. The absolute indifference of the creatures of the Galapagos is a wonder to behold. There are notable exceptions. Not long ago I traveled through the islands aboard the 237-foot MV Santa Cruz with Tauck World Discovery. On the evening we set sail, our chief naturalist, Jose Aguirre, outlined the dos and don’ts. During our week together I came to admire Jose greatly, both for his encyclopedic knowledge of the islands and for the pithy manner in which he distilled the facts. “You must to stay away from the male bull sea lions,” he said. “They are very territorial. If you don’t respect these animals, you will be having a large 500-pound blubber attached to your leg.” Even for those not afflicted with instantaneous elephantiasis, the Galapagos can be a very harsh place, for while Darwin’s denizens have adapted, man has not. There is no shortage of tales of folks come to a bad end in the Galapagos, divers sucked into the abyss by powerful currents, skeletons buried to the chin in the sand, likely a last ditch attempt to fend off voracious mosquitoes, and many, many baked corpses whose final act will never be surmised. This is why Jose also swore us to a stringent system in which we signed ourselves out and in every time we left and returned the boat. No signing our friends back in either. “Then later you will be saying, ‘Hey, where is my uncle?’” explained Jose. “And the next trip we’ll be finding him terribly mummified.” As my days passed in this implausible world, I was held rapt by the behavior of both animal and man. On Genovesa Island, I stood beside an apoplectic birder, his bazooka-size motor drive firing off machine gun frames of a disinterested blue-footed booby perched on a bush six inches away. The birder fairly panted (perhaps it was the acrid scent of baking guano emanating from the liberally stained bush), but the booby gazed serenely into the massive lens as if admiring itself in a changing room at Macy’s. Finally the birder removed his eye from the lens and turned to me, his face flushed with orgiastic joy. For an unnerving moment I thought he was going to kiss me full on the lips. “Fantastic!” he blurted. “My family isn’t going to believe this!” I nodded quietly, imagining the purgatory his family would suffer upon his return, squirming through several hundred pictures of a single bird. But not all on our tour thrilled to the Galapagos. On Santiago Island I joined a pink-
faced gentleman, the two of us regarding several dozen marine iguanas piled atop each other like scaly cow droppings. In the Galapagos the marine iguanas are everywhere, but I never tired of watching them plop sluggishly from a rock, and, in a wink, undulate through the water with power and grace lovely to behold. My companion, however, was not impressed. “The lizards are bigger in Cancun,” he said. That was certainly true, I said politely, but I doubted the Cancun lizards would be swimming underwater any time soon. I reminded him that our naturalists had told us that the Galapagos iguanas had learned to swim so they could eat the algae beneath the water, ensuring their survival. It was akin to pigs learning to fly. To accentuate this accomplishment, the nearest iguana expelled a copious amount of seawater out its nostrils. My companion scowled. “Swimming lizards are no big deal,” he said. Though we had been ashore for nearly an hour, he still wore his life jacket. It wagged under his jaw like a third chin. “We evolved too.” I considered pushing him into the sea and then signing him in when I returned to the ship so that, in appropriate Darwinian fashion, his genes would be removed from mankind’s pool. The denizens of the Galapagos did not care if we were impressed or not. One golden evening we hiked along the shoreline of Santiago Island, picking our way through a minefield of sea lions, the pithy Jose Aguirre in the lead. There was a great blurt. Immediately on its heels wafted a smell not unlike month-old salmon pulled from the fridge. “Mother of God,” a woman said. Five yards away, 300 pounds of blubber gave a contented snort. Our chief naturalist raised his eyebrows. “Yes, the animals, they go about their business,” Jose said. After retreating upwind, he turned to us again. “Why do you think the animals of the Galapagos ignore us?” We stood pondering amidst the snorting, honking, farting mass. “Because they are used to us?” someone finally said. The trifling answer—because most of the animals have few, if any, natural predators— would come in a moment. But first Jose smiled. “It has nothing to do with us,” he said. “In the scope of time, man only just arrived here. We are unimportant.” v Tauck offers knowledge-seeking world travelers a premium guided travel experience. precarious wire is threaded across an impossibly thin peak of base sculpture, an art piece upon which balances a Christian Cross and an Islamic crescent. It is one of many such pieces that adorn Joe Cardella’s midtown Ventura home, which is equal parts museum, living space, and studio. Cardella’s whole life has been about balance, blending art with politics, war, work, love, travel… and now, retirement. His home provides a glimpse into everything he has done, and he shares it with thousands of other conceptual art pieces in sculpture, mixed media conceptual art assemblages, paintings, raw materials from stone to glass, and an enviable Mediterranean patio lined with wisteria and bougainvillea, bamboo and paving stones. For 25 years, Cardella published ARTLIFE, which was less a magazine and more a portable museum of its own. Though he launched the publication in Santa Barbara and moved to New Haven, Connecticut
The ART and LIFE of Joe Cardella By mark storer Photos by Gaszton Gal
for a time, he spent 18 of those years, from 1988 to 2006, producing ARTLIFE at his Ventura home. Hand assembled and featuring 40 artists from around the world each month, ARTLIFE was—and still is, though Cardella has doffed his publisher’s cap and put on retirement clothes— very much part of his waking and dreaming, a literal manifestation of a conceptual artist’s passion and obsession. “I started this thing with a telephone and Rolodex, talking to artists and getting them to send me pieces in the mail,” Cardella said. “It had to fit into the size of the magazine, but we put in whatever they sent. We made art together.” And they did make art. They didn’t copy it for the magazine or photograph it. Only 200 issues were created each month. If an artist wanted to contribute, he or she had to make 200 pieces of art. Drawings, assemblages, poems, mixed media… If ARTLIFE published it, there were 200 copies of it

and each piece was sent by mail to Cardella’s home, where he and a few volunteers assembled the magazine. “We took 10,000 pages and assembled them into 200 publications, and then sent them out to the world,” he said. To whom he sent those finished products played a large role in ARTLIFE’s success. “I took a one-week trip to New York and the East Coast,” he explained. “I was able to sell subscriptions to the Guggenheim and the Whitney Museum’s bookstores, as well as Yale and Harvard. ARTLIFE was, and is, on display in a lot of highly respected collections and places.” Cardella managed to make a “sustainable living” from ARTLIFE, charging $50 per issue and occasionally filling in the financial blanks of his life with graphic arts work and other jobs when necessary. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art now has 200 issues of ARTLIFE, and the Ventura County Museum recently purchased the entire collection. For years, Cardella didn’t bother soliciting galleries with his own artwork, choosing instead to devote his energy to the 25-year work of art that is ARTLIFE. “Since we were in the best museums and bookstores in America, it never bothered me that our numbers were so

small,” he said. “I always intended ARTLIFE to be collected.” Serving in the U.S. Navy in the late-sixties, Cardella was told that he had acute hearing and, instead of going to Vietnam—a war to which he was opposed—would be based in Greece. “We were there listening to communications and trafficking that from Europe to the Middle East and Asia,” he said. “I was on the World Wide Web before it existed. I knew in 1967 that it was critical and doable.” It served as a marker for his work, too. Cardella knew a digital age was coming. In many ways, his retirement from ARTLIFE is acquiescence to a new and as yet untried medium. His office, if one can call it that, is testament to the balance of old and new. On one side, a cluttered desk with just enough room to pay the bills. A Rolodex sits in the middle of it. The same Rolodex he started with. On the other side, a late generation iMac sits on a solitary table, no clutter. The clean white screen and small keyboard are all that is visible. Cardella compares his house, a modest midtown bungalow built in 1929, to a computer chip that you can walk through. The front door isn’t merely an entrance, it’s an experience. “There’s a tremendous amount of information inside. It’s 25 years of the human condi-

tion and of human expression in here,” Cardella said. “But it’s like living on a postage stamp.” He seems more comfortable in the backyard, where he turned a simple patio into a Mediterranean dreamland, wound through with greenery and an olive tree. It’s here, in a converted one-car garage, that he launched ARTLIFE. The table on which he and his crew assembled each issue is now home to pieces of art, remnants of a quarter century of creative expression. But his favorite space in the home is a small, clutter-free anteroom where an open bookshelf holds every issue Cardella produced. “If I could get a cot in here, I’d sleep in here,” he said. “This is the heart of it all. For every issue you see, there are 40 stories behind it.” Now, ARTLIFE lives on YouTube and the Web in a digitized version. “I’m an object maker,” Cardella said. “I always will be. I have to keep busy and work with material.” His most recent sculptures combine cuttlefish bones with surfboards, both of which feature an elliptical shape and a hard shell covering a soft interior. The cuttlebones became the models for hand-carved surfboards that when backlit produce what he calls a “cameo effect of light coming through the backs of both large and small.” While Cardella considers this the best idea and product he’s come up with since ARTLIFE, he believes the future of conceptual art is somewhere in cyberspace. “The notes I do now are for a virtual museum,” he says. “That’s what I have in mind.” Shoestring budgets and an original $3.50 cover price came a long way to this midtown Ventura bungalow to listen to the proverbial turning fork struck on a star. From a sleepy West Coast garage to the Guggenheim, the Getty, the Whitney and LACMA, Harvard and Yale, Joe Cardella transformed the American art world. v For more details about ARTLIFE or to contact Joe Cardella, log on to art-life.com. You can find Cardella’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/ user/MrArtlife1. From Dec. 4 – Feb. 12, the Museum of Ventura County will display 30 issues of ARTLIFE to announce its acquisition of the entire 276-issue collection. The Collectors Council, with help from the museum’s Fine Arts Committee, purchased the full run of the magazine, making this the only museum in the United States with a complete set. The Museum of Ventura County is located at 100 E. Main St. in downtown Ventura. More information online at venturamuseum.org or by calling 805-653-0323.

It is with a heartfelt commitment for a cure that I have devoted my time to chair this event. Cancer does not discriminate. It will strike one out of every three Californians during their lifetime, and three out of four families. The American Cancer Society has programs and services available to ease the burden of cancer. Since Relay For Life’s inception in 1985 countless individuals, teams, and communities have worked together to celebrate cancer survivors and remember loved ones we’ve lost while raising much needed funds and awareness for the fight against cancer. Please join us, one person can make a difference! Last year in Ventura County alone over 3,000 cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers received direct services and support from your American Cancer Society.
