Gypsy Magic
“W
ell, it’s not a real Gypsy carriage,” John Morgan said, alluding to the bedazzling contraption parked on his Oak View property. It was precisely the sort of ornate carriage we would have hoped for—had we been so bold to hope so high. “That one’s just a replica,” John continued. “The real Gypsy carriage is parked out front.” As he said this, Naz Madaen, who coordinates fashion-centric photo shoots for us from time to time, shot me a sideways glance: a mishmash of doubt and promise. We’d come to Morgan Carriage Works to nose around a bit, to scout the location for a winter fashion pictorial. She had a “Gypsy kids” theme in mind, but Mr. Morgan wasn’t aware of that yet. We walked to the front of the property, located in a semi-rural neighborhood along the Ventura River, and—Shazam! There it was. Moons and stars and all. An authentic 19th-century Gypsy carriage built in England, imported from Ireland, installed on a Hollister Ranch hilltop, and now resting comfortably in Oak View awaiting a deep-pocketed buyer. No crystal ball could have predicted such a coincidence. No earthly magic could have conjured such an ideal photography prop. And John granted us full permission to use it, too, which still amazes me, considering the potential havoc our gaggle of undersized bulls could have wreaked in his carriage shop. Yes, the heavens had aligned. Or so it seemed. A hanging cluster of yellow leaves cast an autumn glow over the antique carriage. Everything was perfect. Then it rained. And just like that, a muddy curtain dropped on our fantasy. By now, of course, you know that Naz managed to corral all the com6

ponents—kids, clothing, carriage, et al.—reschedule for a sunny day, and beat our deadline. By just a hair, I might add; mere hours before press time, we’re still working on the layout. What amazes me most about the scenario isn’t the unlikelihood of discovering a prop that so perfectly fit the bill. It wasn’t the weird serendipity of it all. No, it was John Morgan’s willingness to oblige. To literally open his doors for us. I’m no appraiser of antique Gypsy carriages, but this thing is worth a buck or two. It belongs in a museum. And he lent it to a couple of strangers, not to mention a bunch of well-dressed kids. Thanks, John! (Readers: the Gypsy wagon is for sale, along with other horse-drawn carriages and a trove of wonderful treasures—from whips and gloves to saddle chimes and sleigh bells. Call 805.649.1723 or log on to morgancarriage.com.) If it seems I frequently mention the hominess of Ventura County in these front-of-book notes, it’s because I do. Guilty as charged. And yes, that down-to-earth character influences editorial decisions. When Leslie Westbrook asked if I was “cool with” her deeply personal lead into an interview with singer Perla Batalla (p. 15), I encouraged her to keep it real. The art of music, after all, is its power to move us, to conjure emotions and make us feel. And writing, done well, has a similar dynamism. Sure, most people over the age of four can write. Literally. Physically. Technically. But using words to create a potent brew rather than a mere hodgepodge of letters—that’s the sort of writing that establishes a connection with the reader. At least that’s what I like to think. Thanks again for reading, and for keeping it real as we move into 2013. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Northward ho! Traveling against the grain, an intrepid Southern Californian heads into the snowcapped wilderness of Alaska to welcome winter. By Anne Z. Cooke

iece of cake,” says Jerrod. He sees the overhead light and stops by my seat. “These Alaska pilots do it every day. Snow is like mother’s milk to them.” Out the window, I can see the Chugach Mountains, the string of peaks looking like so much whipped cream. Jerrod smiles confidently and buttons his uniform for the landing. I hold my breath as he hurries back to his seat, and sure enough, our plane floats down onto a snow-blown runway as smoothly as a skater gliding on ice. I hear an audible sigh of relief from my seat partner, as flurries whirl around the plane. She relaxes her grip on the armrest and takes out her lipstick. Snow, mountains of it piling up in Anchorage, is the reason I’m visiting in late February. I tell friends here in town I’m interviewing dog mushers competing in the annual Iditarod dog sled race to Nome. They tell me Anchorage is on track to break the all-time record for total annual snowfall, a record set more than 50 years ago. But my real reason—undeclared—is the urge to go to extremes, to live on the edge. And that means the far north in winter, when temperatures sink into the cellar and snow and ice stretch away for miles, deep, white, and still. You won’t find me tracking polar bears on the Arctic ice sheet. And I won’t be summiting glacier-bound Mt. McKinley: at 20,320

feet, North America’s highest mountain. But the call of the north at its least forgiving, most glittering best is irresistible. If you’ve been to Alaska, chances are it was during summer, when the days are warm and the sun dallies in the heavens until midnight. But by November, the 49th state shines like the jewels in a pirate’s hoard. On the drive north to Fairbanks, giant flakes float down on the windshield as if a featherbed was ripped open and shaken over the highway. When the storm clears, the February sun bounces off the snow like candle flame on a crystal chandelier. Icebound rivers, their rapids frozen solid in midflow, gleam an opalescent silver-green. The ice blocks at Fairbanks’ annual Ice Carving Competition—dump truck sized chunks sawn out of the frozen Tanana River—are so hard and dense that sculptors wielding saws and files easily shape graceful fingers, prancing horse’s legs, and flowing strands of mermaids’ hair. On the horizon at sunset, clouds of tiny ice crystals refract the lingering rays, creating rarely seen “sundogs,” identical pairs of glowing oval shapes. Before my trip ends, with a ride on the Alaska Railroad from Fairbanks back to Anchorage, I’ve signed on to every adventure one could reasonably fit into a single

northern odyssey. With pilot Todd Mackinaw at the helm of an eight-passenger Piper Chieftain, I join a group in Fairbanks to fly north to the Brooks Range, cruising low over the serpentine loops of the frozen Yukon River. Our destination: a tiny airfield in Coldfoot, north of the Arctic Circle. A former mining outpost, Coldfoot earned its name when the last few settlers called it quits and left after two savagely cold winters. Now it’s a café and supply point on the oil pipeline road between Valdez and Prudhoe Bay. I’ve sledded through a forest of birch and sitka spruce behind a team of huskies and explored blue-ice caves in minus-20-degree temperatures. I’ve joined a guided snowshoe hike on the frozen Susitna River, near Talkeetna, where the occasional treacherous patch of open water threatens life and limb. I’ve been on hand as the sleepy brown bears at the Alaska Wildlife Heritage Center (rescued yearling orphans named Taquoka and Shaguyik) wake up and stumble out of their den, looking for a handout. I’ve been teased by the lure of a slippery hillside, and cutting too tight a turn, toppled a snow machine into a snowdrift not five feet from a notso-frozen stream. Soaking at Cheney Hot Springs on a minus-10-degree day, my wet hair freezes into stiff spikes. Who would’ve thought? Throughout, my closest friend has been my daily uniform: a fat down jacket, down mittens with expedition-quality glove liners, padded ski pants over with layered fleece underwear, and—on the coldest days—toe-warmers inside insulated waterproof boots. Stuffed and swaddled I look like a ragbag. But it’s kept me warm, and to my surprise, sometimes too warm. But warm is always good, here in the mystical winter of ice and snow. v Get detailed information and travel tips online at anchorage.net and explorefairbanks.com.

GUY WEBSTER
BIRD ON THE WIRE Nimbly balancing trend and tradition, local singer Perla Batalla has created a sound all her own, a timeless cross-pollination that reflects her bicultural heritage. INTERVIEW BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK
T
HE FIRST TIME I HEARD OJAI SONGBIRD PERLA BATALLA was almost a decade ago when a dear friend of mine passed away. His family had brought him home from the hospital to die in a more comfortable setting. Douglas was in repose in his art-filled dining room, surrounded by flowers, friends, family, and his faithful dog. His sisters were shuttling in and out of the kitchen, preparing food. A recording of Perla Batalla singing the Mexican classic “Cucurrucucú Paloma” was playing throughout the house as we said our farewells, tears streaming down our faces. Douglas and his family gave me the gift of sitting at his deathbed in a most magical and beautiful environment. And Perla, unbeknownst to her, provided the soundtrack that became a most heartfelt adios. The song still brings tears to my eyes. Such is the power of music. Ever since that day, so clearly etched in my memory, I wanted to meet the woman behind the voice. When I learned that the Ojai-based, Grammy Award-nominated singer, composer, arranger, and social activist was involved in an outreach program to expose children to music, I knew it was time for me to learn more about her—and to bring this story full circle.

Leslie A. Westbrook: Let’s start with an easy question. What inspires you, Perla? Perla Batalla: I am inspired by stories. When I keep my ears open I can hear them everywhere. Sometimes there can be a great story hidden within a painting, a black-and-white photograph, or a symphony.
have a CD of Christmas songs, “We Three Kings,” recorded with your daughter, Eva. Is there something you haven’t done yet that you are aching to do? PB: I am writing a theatrical piece that is all about the artistic process. I have been researching Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The working title is “Blue House.”
LAW: Your father was a musician who owned a record store in Venice, California. How did the store inform your artistic path? PB: Discoteca Batalla was the name of the record shop. My mother ran the business, and my brothers, sister, and I all worked there everyday after school. We catered to the Spanish-speaking population on the Westside, back when there was
LAW: How much time do you spend on the road? PB: I have a wonderful agent who has kept me busy since I began my solo career. When my daughter was little, my husband and I decided we would travel together as a family when we worked. He was the chef on “Dinner and a Movie” for 16 years. He would shoot in Atlanta every six weeks, and on occasion they would

Eventually, our little shop was put out of business by the corporate music stores that decided music in Spanish was here to stay. Spending so much time there as a youngster had everything to do with the direction my musical career took. I love to sing and write in Spanish, and still today I adore the Mexican standards. Even Leonard Cohen has said that Spanish is a very musical language: “like flowing water.” LAW: On your latest CD, “Lazy Afternoon,” you show great versatility, singing jazz, rock, folk, and Latin American songs. travel to shoot in wonderful places like Napa, Venice, Rome, New York. We saw a lot of the world together, and I think it added to my daughter’s education. LAW: Tell me about your outreach to children—particularly to children who have not been to a live concert, or who are not exposed to music the way you were in your youth. PB: Outreach is a life-changing experience for my band and me. We have gone into some of the poorest communities in the country to perform and speak about music and the importance of embracing creativity. I take a lot of time to talk with

the students about how being creative can give you power. It’s important for them to know that just because the schools have lost funding for art and music, there is no reason to abandon their creative endeavors. Sometimes young people just need to be given permission to explore the artistic horizon. LAW: Tell us about your adventures and outreach in New Mexico. PB: I have had the pleasure of going to The Border Book Festival, headed by my Mexican “Auntie Mame,” Denise Chavez, many times. It is in La Mesilla, a New Mexico border town, and the volunteers in this community are the real inspiration. Among my favorite all-time moments was the day I went to a juvenile hall and had a poetry exchange with some amazing young writers. LAW: I understand you are thinking of making a documentary film about your work with children. How is that shaping up? PB: We shot the footage and hope to get funding for the editing soon. LAW: You have had an amazing career thus far, singing backup for Leonard Cohen and being nominated for a Grammy for your tribute album to him (“Bird On A Wire”). You’ve performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and in 2009 you were awarded the U.N.’s Earth Charter Award for extraordinary devotion to social and economic justice. The following year you received the Premio Fronterizo Award for “healing work in the world.” What are you most proud of? PB: I tend to be a mother to every child I meet. So I have to say I am most proud of being a mom. My husband and I think of our daughter as our masterpiece.

LAW: What makes you happiest? PB: People who try. LAW: What makes you sad? PB: People who give up. LAW: Beyond music, what are some of your interests? PB: I am interested in absolutely everything: art, food, photography, literature, design, theater, film. Claud Mann, my hubby of 21 years, is working with the Orfaela Foundation on the School Food Initiative and is passionate about his work. I like to say that he is saving the world one snack at a time. LAW: There used to be a radio program on KCRW where the host asked what three pieces of music his guests would take with them to a deserted island. What would you take? PB: That is easy: “Cohen Live,” “The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album,” and the soundtrack to “CHiPs the musical.” LAW: I don’t mean to be morose, but since I began this interview with a personal story about your music and my friend’s passing, I wonder what you would want played at your funeral? Store manager, Kris Rosado says “customers really appreciate the appointment because I can work uninterrupted with them… It actually speeds up the selection process.” For anyone looking to create two spaces out of one, Comfort Zone’s exciting new wallbed gallery has the solution. “Be the change you want to see in the world” - Mahatma Gandhi. We all have a personal vision of what we think the world could be, should be or can be; but Humanity never seems to live up to these ideals. We humans are complex creatures, filled with imperfections. Our emotions, beliefs and superstitions often take precedence over logic, generosity and compassion. The labors of the few who rise above the rabble and give their lives in an effort to do some real good may seem insignificant, but without them there is no real hope. These unique individuals can’t do it alone, they need our help. I believe we are obliged to give whatever we can to support the efforts of those who work to create a more ideal world. The dining room in the 1928 Tudor home connects to the front door. Or is it the back door?
little cottage by the sea Steve and Carol Cook followed Thoreau’s lead to the Lanes—where sand is normal, art abounds, and the couple can live the life they imagined. By lisa snider

here is the front door the back door and the back door the front door? Why, at a quaint beach cottage on Brunswick Lane in the Pierpont community, of course. It’s a story that Steve and Carol Cook love to tell about their 1928 Tudor home. The backyard was originally the front yard, but over time, zoning changes put the main street on the other side of the house. Pieces of the original front sidewalk dot what is now their backyard garden as stepping stones. “It’s a magical place,” says Steve, who reluctantly bought the house at his wife’s urging 15 years ago. According to her decorating blog, Carol wanted a beach house because, “Marriage to an avid surfer means sand tracked throughout the house. I constantly complained about sand always underfoot. I said we should buy a beach house where sand is normal. We did. And I no longer complain about sand.” It wasn’t easy, though. At the time, they lived comfortably just a mile away in Midtown. The beach house presented challenges; it was twice the money and half the space. At just 1,000 square feet including a small one-car garage, the couple, now both 64, had to downsize significantly.
“It’s like living on a boat,” Steve says with a big smile. Two bedrooms and one bathroom meant getting creative with the space, but with their daughter in high school and their son in college back then, they could see the big picture. At the time, Steve worked at a manufacturing company, and Carol’s salary as a teacher made getting into a more expensive home tricky. One thing that worked in their favor was that they bought at the bottom of the market. “We got in just before the prices took off,” Steve says. The first weekend in the house, Steve painted a surfer on their mailbox. Next he painted the kids’ surfboards, and soon, he was scouring yard sales for old surfboards to paint, which were quick to sell. Before that, he hadn’t painted in 25 years. “This house brought out his muse,” Carol says. Meanwhile, the manufacturing company Steve was working for sold, and he used his severance to invest more time and effort into his art and to fix up the house. “She had a job, and she had benefits, so that helped,” he says. Steve quickly became a prolific and successful painter best known for his use of vivid colors and light. His subjects range from land and seascapes to surf culture, old cars and buildings, December 2012 | ventana | 31
and gardens. He refers to his work as “painterly realism.” In their spare time, when Steve wasn’t painting and Carol wasn’t teaching, they turned their attention to much-needed improvements to the home. First, they removed the wallto-wall Berber carpets to reveal beautiful hardwood floors, which better accommodated their new sand-loving lifestyle. What was originally the back porch still held a water heater, which was moved to create a more inviting front entrance. The wall that divided the front entrance from the rest of the house was opened up, and the addition of a bright red Dutch front door completed the look. Now, looking through the front door, visitors can see all the way into their backyard, where Carol has created a vibrant garden. Also an avid cook, Steve saw to it that the kitchen receive some updates, including granite counters, hexagonal tile floors to match the original bathroom tiles, and a new Viking range. But some of the best features of the home needed no improvements. All of the white wood-framed windows are original, and they have left them without curtains or screens to flood the home with natural light and a feeling of being outdoors. The original moldings and curved ceilings reflect the period the two have grown to cherish and wish to preserve. Since space is at a premium, details like a built-in dining room window bench seat and pull-down attic stairs offer more options for easily accessible storage. Steve’s painting took off, and he painted anywhere he could—in the house, in the yard, and in the garage—and oil paints dripped all through the house. Carol pleaded with him to build a studio, and Steve soon saw the benefit. “I painted in the garage with the garage door open, and it would always turn into a party,” he says, recalling well-intentioned critiques from some passersby. The distractions proved overwhelming. Working with a contractor, they designed a small art studio at the back of the cottage in the home’s classic Tudor style with a tall pitch to the roof. High skylights and French doors provide perfect lighting for Steve to work. A stained-glass window featuring a sea glass wave lends a signature artistic touch. 32 | ventana | DECember 2012
No longer treating his passion for art as a hobby, Steve has realized a successful business. He sells some 20 to 30 paintings per year at prices ranging from $400 to $4,000. He does well commercially, too, selling his work to the Ventura Visitors & Convention Bureau for posters and tote bags, as well as to Firestone Winery for a series of wine labels. Many of his paintings, 70 in all, hang proudly in their home and are constantly rotated to accommodate the seasons, shows, and sales. “I have to work with the decorator,” Steve says with a nod to Carol, who has developed her own creative passions in the home, painting their furniture pieces, designing functional and striking vignettes, and sewing custom pillows and slipcovers to make the space into a cozy livable beach retreat. Both have an eye for stunning colors, sometimes muted, sometimes boldly displayed for impact, with the two often negotiating for places to display their works. Carol’s work has also spilled over into crafting handmade books and cards, which, in addition to her designs and décor for the home, are all detailed in words and photos on her whimsical blog. “It makes me do the things I want to do,” she says of her blog, which enjoys quite a following and espouses Thoreau’s advice to “live the life you have imagined.” Now fully entrenched in beach life and a neighborhood that has become what they refer to as their village, with holiday progressive dinners up and down their street and picnics with the neighbors on the beach, everything is as it should be. “It’s a good life,” Steve says. Looking ahead, Carol is making plans to retire from teaching, a profession she loves, in 2014. Years ago, she recalls, she and Steve attended a retirement planning seminar, and the one question she still remembers being asked by the facilitator was, “Where do you picture yourselves in retirement?” Carol says she answered without hesitation: “I’m walking on a beach!” v

Tension Free A tension ring is one where the diamond is held in by hardening the metal in the mounting to the point that it has become a spring that is so strong it holds in the diamond. I love the concept but hate the compromises required to create them. The hardening of the gold in the mounting means that the ring can’t be sized without destroying the spring properties. Also, the diamond is under great strain and more likely to get damaged. Anytime service is needed, you have to make a new ring. This is a ring I did recently for a client that looks like a tension ring, but uses conventional technology. That means the mounting protects the diamond rather than endangering it. It also means we can size it or repair any accidental damage without making a new ring. Plus it is far less costly than a tension mounting. The advantage of a design that is this open is that it displays a diamond so well and makes it very easy to keep the diamond clean. That’s important because the cleaner it is, the more beautiful. This style is can be made with round, square, or emerald shape stones. The center can range from one half carat, up. We also make several styles of companion bands for them. Please come see us regarding your jewelry needs. We have a wonderful selection of finished jewelry & everything that hasn’t been designed yet as well.
