EDITOR’S NOTE
GAME ON THERE’S A CHRISTMAS RED ENVELOPE ON MY desk this drizzly December morning. It’s flecked with pearly snowflakes and headed, “Inside: Everything you need to win the holidays.” There is no mention of enjoyment, or the loser. A cursory Web search of the term “holiday season” yields decidedly un-festive front-page news, with the US and UK eyeing a carry-on luggage ban for air travelers: apparently al-Qaida is up to its naughty ways again, or so we’re warned in crushing 72-point type. And, oh, “ugly sweaters are in style this holiday season.” Maybe it’s because I’m getting older—and certainly because the Internet has changed the way we buy and sell and learn—but the paradoxical slap fight of the holiday season seems to be escalating. Back and forth between anguish and joy, rosy cheeks and stress-flushed faces. Whatever happened to The Most Wonderful Time of the Year? Even a search for “how to enjoy the holiday season” generates backhanded glad tidings: how to enjoy it “without going broke,” or “despite being sober,” or “with your cat.” (Rule number 1: Be happy, cats naturally feed off your emotions.) Well, my cats look confused this morning. The holiday season has become a pillar of American economics. That much I understand; secular money drives this bus, after all. But must we wrap the whole period in razor wire? As a society, we wade timorously into the quicksand of what’s supposed to be a joyous stretch, a season whose launch day we’ve given the plagueish nickname Black Friday. Why not just call it Hell’s Fiery Gate? By the time I have grandkids they’ll

fear the whole feast, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, and spend January 1 digging themselves out of a mudslide of holiday neuroses. The term Black Friday, by the way, dates to 1869 when a couple greedy speculators tried to corner the gold market. Then in 1961 it was used by a PR executive to describe the postThanksgiving frenzy of consumerism and resulting traffic jams, as frothing shoppers bum-rushed stores looking for bargains. So perhaps none of this is new. But as a throwback to at least somewhat simpler times, we’ve elected not to bombard you with holiday-related editorial content this month: no holiday survival tips or must-haves or how-to lists, no instructional articles about Beating the Holiday Bulge, or the Holiday Blues, or the Holiday Bloat (actual headlines). Yes, this is the December issue of a lifestyle magazine. But we kind of like wandering from the conventional path. Our cover story features a decidedly unconventional Ventura County designer named Eric Corbett, whose approach strays so far from the mundane it takes on a different language. This is a guy who considers vagaries of emotion and hope for the future building blocks of architectural design, who thrives on getting people to respond—positively or negatively—and who believes that great innovation makes the world a better place. We like that kind of thinking, and believe it’s time for Ventura County to embrace the future by improving the present. They are, after all, one and the same. Thanks again for your support as we move into 2015. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

MEDICINAL PURPOSE In Upper Ojai, a full-bodied blend of home, health, philanthropy, and locally grown wine. BY MARK STORER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL
BRUCE CHERNOF HAS BEEN THINKING A LOT about aging. It’s fall in the Upper Ojai vineyard where he and his partner, Daniel Garcia, are awaiting a delivery of mulch for their three acres of wine grapes: Syrah, Grenache, Malbec, and more, all grown sustainably for their Ojai Alisal Winery label. The mulch keeps the weeds down, and helps avoid the need for pesticides. “Right now, we’re just trying to get this wine into bottles and make sure it tastes good,” he said. Aging the wine, of course, from barrel to bottle, is critical to the outcome. In between vineyard work, harvest, bottling, marketing, cleaning, planting, pruning, and topping, Chernof and Garcia are both medical doctors. Chernof, an internist, taught at UCLA’s medical school for many years and now serves as the president and CEO of The SCAN Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to “promoting aging with dignity and independence.” So growing and aging isn’t just for the vineyard. “There are a lot of philanthropic organizations that focus on health issues in general,” Chernof said. “But the number of organizations that focus exclusively on aging issues can really be counted on one hand. It’s something we don’t prepare for very well.” DECEMBER 2014

Chernof is excited, however, that SCAN has recently partnered with a number of philanthropic organizations that are paying attention. “SCAN’s endowment was a one-time $205 million gift from the SCAN health plan, a nonprofit health plan that focuses only on seniors,” he said. “It has a particular interest and focus on working with the most vulnerable in the aging population.” SCAN’s history began in 1977 in Long Beach with a group of seniors who were adamant about not being put in nursing homes and concerned about the lack of community-based services for seniors. They built a community support network, and received backing from the City of Long Beach. By the 1980s, SCAN was tapped by the federal government to help set up a national pilot program for Medicare. “The board realized that there was no independent entity talking about these issues, about aging, and that’s where the foundation comes in,” Chernof explained. Its main goals are to engage the public and raise awareness about aging issues, advance realistic policy issues at the state and federal levels, and create programs that will deliver usable services to patients. “It’s no good making promises that you can’t keep later,” he said. Beyond the practical application of it all, Chernof is a physician who believes that Americans don’t age as well as we could. “Depression and even mental illness are more prevalent in our aging population,” he said. “And it’s obvious that if an individual needs medications for that, fine let’s do that. But more often than not, it’s more about keeping connected and having something useful to do. We retire and then sort of fade away,” he said. And that’s exactly what we don’t want to do, according to the good doctor. “It’s great to give voice to an issue that we all have to care about,” Chernof said. “Seventy percent of people over 65 will need some form of long-term services as they age. It could be as simple as needing transportation to the grocery store, or help with household chores.” Or it could be the full package—from assisted living to medical care. As Chernof puts it, “We all want to live with dignity and independence, and if that’s what we want, we’re going to have to mindfully build that.” So in 2009, he

and Garcia started taking their own medicine. Not content to just work hard in the medical industry and build up their 401(k) plans, they grow wine grapes in Upper Ojai, not far from Sulphur Mountain Road on the Topa Topa side of Highway 150. They purchased 20 acres and built a home that fits seamlessly among the wide oaks, scrub brush, and lavender, and they planted three of those acres with Rhone varietals. The land they farm has an agricultural history, of course, as does most of the Ojai Valley. The vineyard is home to several old wild walnut trees, and avocado and citrus farms, all suffering from the recent drought, dot the surrounding area. “It’s an east-west valley and we get a sea breeze through here about 150 days a year,” he explained. “The sun exposure is perfect,

even better than in a lot of other growing areas.” Chernof and Garcia do almost all the work in their vineyard, everything from planting to leafing and topping. The only time they bring in outside help is during harvest season. It’s a small operation, entirely sustainable and organic, and Norm Stafford of Aldabella Winery and custom crush facility makes the wines in Westlake Village. “We wanted to make wines that come from our land,” Chernof said. “We don’t source grapes from anywhere else. Terroir makes a difference.” Others think so too, apparently. Ojai Alisal wines can be found at some of the region’s most highly regarded restaurants: Azu, in Ojai; Downey’s, in Santa Barbara; and Café Zack, in Ventura. Chernof said that it’s a thrill to be able to provide local wines for superb local cuisine. As passionate as he is about aging issues in the U.S., Chernof can talk wine all day with just as much passion. “You’re tasting the place and what the farmers did,” he said enthusiastically. “We made our 2012 and 2013 Viognier similarly, with a little more oak on the 2012. But what you’re tasting is the difference between the two years those grapes grew. A warmer summer, more

rain, less rain—you’re tasting all of that in each bottle.” I tasted Chernof and Garcia’s 2012 Grenache, one of my favorite varietals. The balance of flavors and mouth-feel was complex and inviting. Lush floral notes with hints of raspberry and pomegranate, and just a touch of vanilla imparted by the oak, left a long-lasting finish. Winemaking and medicine have a lot in common, as it happens. There are many unknowns that the physician works with, though there is a lot of science to guide him. Sometimes, gut instincts count for something. The same is true of growing and making wine—the science is there, but without a bit of artistic license, wine is merely fermented grape juice. Good wine improves with age. So does life, and the symmetry of moving from one part of life to the next, as one moves from the harvest to the bottle, is not lost on Chernof and Garcia. Sunsets, then, are nothing to be feared. Indeed, they are the promise of another day soon to rise. v Winemaking philosophy, tasting locations, and more: ojaialisal.com The SCAN Foundation: thescanfoundation.org

RETREAT, RELAX, RECHARGE INSIDE OXNARD’S HEALTHIEST BEACH HOUSE
Who says getting in tip-top shape has to be a grind? A couple local ladies—one a fitness guru, the other a fresh food chef—offer a casual approach to mental and physical conditioning. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK PHOTOS BY KIM RIDDLE-HALAMICEK
Gentle yoga on the sand of Oxnard’s Mandalay Beach, steps from the back deck.
Rejuvenate: make (someone or something) look or feel younger, fresher, or livelier. What happens when seven women (in their 40s, 50s, and 60s) and two group leaders with an awesome assistant gather at a modest beach house, sandwiched between million dollar mansions, on Mandalay Shores in Oxnard for a weekend of rejuvenation and relaxation? A lot, it turns out, thanks to Rejuvenation Retreat organizers Dani Bahnsen, a personal trainer and fitness expert, and her business partner, Suzanne Landry, an organic chef/teacher/ cookbook author. Their weekend retreats offer activities ranging from walks/runs and yoga on the beach to nutritional, organic cooking instruction, massages, guided meditation, and, perhaps best of all, camaraderie between women in a low-key, relaxed setting. In fact, guests can partake in as
many activities as they like—or do absolutely nothing. All while enjoying delicious, nutritious meals in a chill atmosphere complete with Pacific Ocean sunsets. I arrived for the late-October retreat on a Friday afternoon, feeling heartsick and in need of rejuvenation. I had lost my father in the spring, along with 20 other friends, neighbors, and relatives—all of whom had passed away in the previous nine months. Needless to say, 2014 had me reeling.

I was warmly welcomed into the cozy four-bedroom, three-bath beach house by Dani, the organizer, and Mary Ann, our “house mom” and Suzanne’s cooking assistant, who brought me a mug of restorative herbal tea. I took a deep breath as I gazed at the amazing ocean and Channel Islands view. Other guests began to arrive, and Dani informed us that there was a schedule but it was flexible—which set the tone for a very relaxed and fluid gathering. Following a light dinner, we gathered around the fireplace in the living room to share why we had come to the retreat. There was Anne, a nurse and mother of four grown sons, who, along with her best friend, Cheryl, had come “for the cooking lessons.” There was Debra, a repeat guest from Santa Barbara, de-stressing after her son’s 250-person wedding. Brenda wanted to learn “how to take better care of herself.” And there was me—beyond sad and unable to hide it during our evening introductions, which morphed into a supportive atmosphere for all participants. I had come to write this story, but also to deal with the grief I’d uncharacteristically shared with the group. But I had also experienced Suzanne Landry’s delicious, healthy food from her cookbook, “The Passionate Vegetable,” and was looking forward to some good eats, too. Everyone was excited and open to what the weekend had in store. Landry, a noted cookbook author and dynamic teacher, is on a mission to inspire people to eat healthier. She teamed up with fitness guru Dani because, in addition to sharing her vast knowledge on healthy eating, she “loves seeing women supporting each other.” Plenty of her tasty, organic dishes were served throughout the weekend. There were delicious quiches with the most amazing crust, hearty soups (squash flavored with cinnamon and ginger, fresh minestrone), kale salad, teriyaki organic chicken, and muffins, as well as bountiful berries, fruits, nuts, and a delicious apple crisp.

DECEMBER 2014
There was a masseuse on hand, two guest speakers (an informative talk on water filters convinced me to never drink bottled or tap water again), gentle exercise, and cooking demos jam-packed with useful information, from cutting skills to stovetop and baking tips. On Saturday night, the group really connected over vision boards, wine, and popcorn, sharing photos and stories and support for whatever each one was dealing with in their busy lives. After a hot bath, I took a book to bed and had amazing dreams (Billy Crystal and I fell in love!), and I began to feel much better than I had upon arrival. Dani, a gentle and knowledgeable personal trainer (one guest feared she was going to force her to run, not walk, which couldn’t have been further from the truth), envisioned the retreats, left the corporate world, and made her “dream come true.” She’s doing a fine job in this new profession. I took home many lessons, including a “formula for success” (know what you want, write it down, and review it frequently) and a reminder of which foods to eat, and chew thoroughly, if I wanted to lose weight. I loved our beach walks, and hula hooping was a blast to the past, as well as great exercise. There was also gentle yoga, stretching, and muscle evaluations. Best of all, I arrived with a frown and left with a smile. And that was priceless. When it was time to depart, all the women exchanged heartfelt hugs goodbye, as we loaded our travel bags, pillows, and towels into our cars and returned to our respective lives, definitely rejuvenated and recharged, not to mention armed with skills to live healthier, happier lives. Would I do it again, even though I now know how to make Suzanne’s killer California Fiesta Quinoa Salad? In a nanosecond—and one that would hopefully find me arriving in the much happier state of mind I left in. v
BODY, MIND, AND SPIRIT Upcoming retreats are scheduled for Jan. 16–18, Mar. 20–22, and May 15–17. Prices range from $297-$797. For details, visit rejuvretreat.com or call 805.732.4836. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Scoping for wildlife on Lago Sandoval, in the Tambopata National Reserve near Puerto Maldonado.
Machu Picchu may top the traveler’s hit list in Peru, but as local writer Ken McAlpine discovers, it would be a mistake to ignore the country’s rainforest glories. Photos courtesy of Inkaterra Hotels
T
raveling up Peru’s Tambopata River from Puerto Maldonado beneath an evening Amazonian sun I am given the obligatory lecture to stay centered in the narrow boat, no sudden movements please, no wild rushing to one side and the other to snap photos of rainforest creatures for there is no telling what we might see here in a place both rare and beautiful. Here in the southeastern corner of Peru, nearly 80 percent of the state of Madre de Dios is protected.

And so I am mildly surprised when the boat driver stands and shouts, abandoning the tiller to lean far out over the port side, cell phone camera in hand. Enzo Mariche Ancasi is right beside him. Enzo gestures to me and I join them, the three of us, rule breakers all, leaning out to gape at the Black Caiman, eight glorious feet of prehistoric reptile, stretched upon the river bank. “It is very unusual to see them on the river,” whispers Enzo. “They are mostly living on the lake, and even there they are shy and it is hard to see them.” Our boat throbs idly, holding its own against the sweeping brown river. No one takes their eyes off the caiman. Very softly my new friend Enzo says, “The Nature is amazing.”
R
egarding Nature, Enzo is, of course, spot on. But better still for Enzo and those who visit Tambopata, few places showcase the amazing breadth and width of Nature like the Amazonian rainforest: otherworldly creatures, astonishing adaptations, and terrible Darwinian battles for survival, up, in, and under a riotous canopy that comprises just two percent of the earth’s surface yet holds half its species. Perhaps most astonishing of all, despite this cornucopia of ecological excess, the rainforest remains Peru’s ugly stepsister. As Enzo’s fellow Rainforest Expeditions guide Katherine Torres puts it one night over dinner, “The face of Peru is Machu Picchu.” This is a profound shame. Don’t get me wrong. I have been to Machu Picchu and it is indeed a life-changing place, but now I can also tell you that Peru’s rainforest will accomplish precisely the same magic, stamping you with moments and memories you will never forget. Happily too, you won’t have to roll out your sleeping bag in a skeeter-infested bog to garner these memories. Although ecotourism has only come to the Tambopata region in the past 20 years, a dozen or so different companies line the river, and with their coming, and their competition, the level of luxury has risen accordingly. I traveled with Rainforest Expeditions, staying in two of their three lodges along Rio Tambopata. Posada Amazonas (a 45-minute boat ride upriver from Puerto Maldanodo) and Refugio Amazonas (3.5 hours upriver) rise out of the jungle like some Swiss Family Robinson oasis, only the Robinson’s digs weren’t polished to a sheen, with soft beds and turn down mosquito netting, hot buffet-style meals (often featuring Peruvian cuisine) served at long tables in the high-roofed dining area, and other civilized touches like soft rolls stuffed with olives waiting, post hike, at the lodge entrance. (Farther upriver, four more hours from Refugio Amazonas, Rainforest Expedition’s third lodge, the Tambopata Research Center, is more rustic but offers greater opportunity for wildlife encounters.) My favorite part, however, was that we were still very much in the jungle. Walking to breakfast each morning I heard monkeys chattering and shrieking as if engaged in some debauched frat party, and cartoonishly colored birds regarded me from the trees. At a little past nine each night the electricity was shut off, plunging the world into velvet darkness so that you might lay in your soft bed listening to sudden blurts and steady drones and deep-throated staccato burstings. And oh, the stars. Days revolved around guided events of guests’ choosing. Rainforest Expeditions offers everything from bird watching tours to canopy climbs. I simply chose to see as much of the rainforest as possible, and Enzo proved to be the ideal guide. He had an almost

encyclopedic knowledge of the jungle; in part because he was born and raised in Puerto Maldonado (his grandfather fished the lakes with a bow and arrow), in part because Rainforest Expedition guides are trained by biologists. Enzo possessed an instinctual grasp of when to keep things simple—“Little frog,” “Big spider!”—and when to discourse at length. Best of all, adventuring with Enzo was like exploring with your 12-year-old best friend. Pausing on the trail, he would bend and peer into the brush. “Let’s see what is in the hole over there.” As you might imagine, there are plenty of big things in the rainforest: plate-size spiders and fist-size snails, the Harpy Eagle (the Americas’ largest raptor) and insects of such girth that you feel their passing breeze, and kapok trees with limbs as thick as Volkswagen buses. There were insanely colorful birds—White Throated Toucans, Chestnut-eared Aracaris, and all manner of macaws—and heaps of cavorting monkeys—Brown Capuchin, Dusky Titi, and Squirrel— whose leaps caused boughs to dip and crash as if assaulted by overweight rain drops. And yes, there were piranhas: four species of the ragged-toothed fish in the Tambopata region, the largest of which, the black piranha, grows to nearly a foot. As we prepared to fish for piranha one dawn on Tres Chimbadas Lake, guide Yuri Rivera raised an eyebrow. “But you know we don’t have any fishing line, so we are going to have to use our fingers.” Masters of the jest, those Rainforest guides.
I
enjoyed the grandeur of the rainforest (twice we climbed tall towers to gaze upon a green canopy sea stretching to every horizon), but it was her countless nuances that rendered me spellbound and riveted. Enzo pointed out how the roots of plants and trees snaked out for impossible distances because there are few nutrients beneath the first few inches of soil. He chipped a piece of bark from a garlic tree, informing me that it made for an excellent bug repellent (a handy thing to know). He traced a finger beside a procession of termites making their way up a tree trunk to their nest. “If you get lost in the woods, you can eat them. They have lots of protein.” This begged the obvious. With Enzo’s permission, I tried them. He watched my face. “Unique taste, actually,” he said. “Like wood.” “Mmmmm,” said Enzo. “And there are millions and millions of them. Termites are very important in the Amazon.” Everywhere there was something that made you marvel again upon the diversity of our world. Birds (Hoatzia) that release a horrible smell to repel predators; strangler figs that crush and drain the life from their host tree; plants that ease arthritis and, perhaps of broader interest, serve as sexual attractant. Even the seemingly obvious and inconsequential was not so. Hiking one humid-thick afternoon through yet another tunnel of fern and leaf and vine and creeper, Enzo stopped to delicately draw a fat leaf down toward my nose. “You see?” he asked. I leaned closer because usually I didn’t. Masters of blending, these denizens of the rainforest. Actually this ant was easy to see, being shoeshine black and a half a size bigger than your average ant. But it still looked like an ant. I wondered if Enzo was finally running out of things to show me. “Bullet ant,” he said. “Very poisonous. I talked to the researchers
and they told me it’s the same kind of poison as a king cobra’s, only much less. But still, you do not want to be bitten.” Hence the three simple guidelines posted in both lodges: “Make Questions,” “Silence is Good,” and “Avoid Manipulate Alive Organisms.” Although the small things never ceased to swarm and surprise, the rainforest was quite capable of producing its klaxon calls. Late one afternoon, the setting sun sending foggy beams of light down through the canopy, the entire forest suddenly echoed with a long roar, something like the passing of a great, deep wind. It was followed by a series of guttural grunts. I turned quickly to Enzo, but he made no move to run. I wished to make a question. What the hell was that? “Howler monkey,” said Enzo. “It is the noisiest animal on earth, after the blue whale.” The howls continued, primitive and now lovely in the waning light. It was the drumbeat of a different world. It is good for us to hear such things. Enzo looked up to the gloaming sky, as if tracking the grunts bouncing about in the canopy, and then he smiled. “The Nature is amazing.” v Ken McAlpine is the author of seven books. His newest, “Lightning Strikes of Loopy Giddiness,” a collection of travel essays, will be out in time for Christmas. Visit kenmcalpine.com.

You’ll fly into the small town of Puerto Maldonado from either Cusco (90-minute flight) or Lima (30-minute flight). A bus takes you to the river; a boat takes you upriver to the lodges. WHEN TO VISIT The dry season, June through August, is best; animals are on the move looking for food. If you want to avoid your fellow man, try the shoulder seasons of April/May and September/October, but be prepared for rain. WHERE TO STAY
TOP TO BOTTOM: Eyes out for black caiman on the Rio Tambopata. A third of the world’s bird species call the Amazon home. With a 5- to 8-inch wingspan, the blue morpho is one of the world’s largest butterflies.
Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica’s all-inclusive lodge abuts the lush Tambopata National Reserve. Posada Amazonas: a 45-minute boat ride up Rio Tambopata from the town of Puerto Maldonado, this 30-room lodge is easiest to get to. Refugio Amazonas: further upriver (3.5 hours), still luxurious and family-friendly, with a play area and a rainforest trail designed for children. Tambopata Research Center: Deep (4 hours upriver from Refugio Amazonas) in an uninhabited portion of the Reserve, here’s your best chance to see wildlife, and a chance to talk with biologists and ecologists conducting fieldwork. Amenities are slightly more spartan (i.e. shared bathrooms), and you’ll need to invest more time to get here.

JJ JETEL For “The Lab” in the Newbury Park offices of Clover Sites, Corbett and his team designed an ultra-clean environment to juxtapose with the luxe, tactile aesthetic of the rest of the corporate space.
SMART WORLD
Future-minded designer Eric Corbett on innovation, shared dreams, and the remerging value of craft. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER “MOST PEOPLE SAY WE’RE CRAZY WHEN THEY FIRST START WORKING WITH US,” ADMITS ERIC CORBETT, founder of the architectural and design firm Kingdom Industry. “And what that means is that we’ve identified the limitations of people’s expectations.” That’s okay with Corbett. His spaces are intentionally radical, designed to tap into his customers’ needs beyond the surface level. He creates everything from layout to decor with the client’s character in mind, making every space an extension of their personality. And that can mean some interesting design choices: hidden rooms, broken angles, patterns and artifacts from every era imaginable mashed up with bleeding-edge technological innovations. The results only sound jarring. In reality, these spaces evince a harmony that feels as natural as breathing. You may not be able to put your finger on why Kingdom Industry designs seems so right, but you’ll feel it. Ventana recently caught up with Corbett to talk about his vision, philosophy, and the (possible) future of interior design. }}

DECEMBER 2014
What did you do before you founded Kingdom Industry? I had an apprenticeship with a local architect while I was in high school. A couple of years outside of high school, I started my own company focused mainly on creating custom furniture and millworks. Without a formal education, my design career had to develop in a more organic way. I found my woodworking expertise lends itself to a wider expression and I began to design larger scale projects. In fact, at some point, I stopped fabricating things altogether. It’s still a passion of mine, and maybe one day I’ll be able to create things in that way again. Over the next 15 years, I started several different design companies—sometimes with partners, sometimes by myself—until incorporating Kingdom Industry in 2011. What have been your biggest influences in design, art, and architecture? For me, inspiration generally comes from outside the field of architecture. Film, music, cooking, art, and just general humanity feed me. Oddly, I’m a musician who doesn’t really listen to music … and I think the worst thing I could do would be to study the ins and outs of others in the same field. That is in no way to say that I don’t respect the things people are doing. In fact, I spend at least a few minutes every day poring over images on the Web. I don’t spend too much time, but sorta feel inspired by a brief glimpse. When it’s time to design, I turn that off and try to have my own ideas. What experiences shaped your current aesthetic/approach to design? Aesthetics and my approach tend to be pretty transient, but right now we’re at a unique point where technology is moving pretty fast. That means we’re feeling a disconnection from our past and our heritage, which creates a pretty big void. Because of that, environments that invigorate, soothe, support, and drive progress need to start from a place of stability that connects human needs in order to offer a platform to jump off into the unknown. As digital and data take over our lives, we crave tactile experience and things that ground us. That’s only going to get stronger. How would you characterize your design philosophy? Our primary design philosophy is, first, to understand ‘why’—why a company does what it does, why it behaves in the manner in which it behaves. How do the attributes of its culture contribute to its output? Our posture has always been to understand the soul of a company and its people, then enable them to express that better. Once we have that understanding, the book writes itself.
GASZTON GAL
Your website states, “We want to create things that drive people to respond either positively or negatively.” What’s the purpose of eliciting a negative reaction? Every good story has a point of impasse. There can be no curiosity without confusion, no resolution without tension. Good design, regardless of medium, is based on a sense of flow and balance and spatial priority. Which, by its nature, means there’s flow in one area, and an area where there is not. We want to take people on a journey where there’s a narrative arc. Otherwise a space becomes forgettable because we haven’t connected with its story. How did you find the variety of talent to help you carry out your vision as a company? Slowly. We look for plumbers who are artists first, contractors who are resourceful and committed to creating quality experiences, and they’re hard to come by. We try to nurture those relationships and are very loyal to those people, because they see things the way we do. Ultimately, we try to surround ourselves with a wide variety of trades and artisans who share those values. It seems like today there are an increasing amount of disrupDECEMBER 2014

tors who are trying to break out of norms, and we’re always excited to nurture new relationships with those kind of people.
Kingdom spends probably more time than we should collecting that data. We really attempt to forecast growth, style, function. We currently have a client that is literally growing so fast they will outgrow the 20,000-square-foot space we’re creating for them before they actually get into it. We’re comfortable adapting to those kinds of shifts in need and culture. That actually really excites us. It’s a lot of fun being forced to be so dynamic. What makes Kingdom different from other design firms? At a brand level, we exist to propel our clients into a more grounded and honest expression of who they are. That seems unique to me. What changes or innovations in design—technologically or aesthetically—do you imagine might take place over the next few decades? We talk a lot about this topic, actually. We want to be known for innovation and super progressive thought as it applies to architecture and design. However, with that said, I believe it can become very easy to forget that human beings need to bring the life to our future spaces. Changes in technology and cultural perception are very likely to radically change in even the next few years. Right now, everything is up for grabs: smart everything, no more inanimate objects. I’m not sure we will be using desktop computers in 10 years. Everything will likely be one computer. Even then, we will love wool and leather, glass and metal and stone. We will crave unplugged spaces, or at least spaces that are tactile and analog. I’m fascinated with the idea of ‘digital’ completely disappearing and a resurgence of craft and one-of-a-kindness. I also think that we are at the front door of a fabrication revolution. Anything you want will be a click away. That will mean a lot of junk. Eventually, craft will reemerge as valuable. v THE ART OF SOUL kingdomindustry.com

When you’re in the design phase, what’s your process for determining a client’s needs and culture? Well, we listen. We watch. We will often spend a lot of time just witnessing how their days go, what sort of things are going on in a home or a business. Everyone has a particular perspective on who they are (more often, who they wish they were), so it helps us to get some objective discernment.

RECYCLED! ONE HUNDRED PERCENT! 1.5ct Emerald and .53ct Diamond set in 18kt Yellow Gold with 19kt White Gold accents. These two gems were originally part of a well-loved pendant made nearly 100 years ago. I liberated this 1.5ct gem from the heart of the original 2ct Emerald. The Diamond is so beautiful I didn’t need to have it recut to the modern ideal. Then I reset both in White and Yellow recycled Gold. A brand new creation using gems and precious metals from the past.
