hen the time became right to scout out locations for Labyrinth Winery’s new tasting room that opens this month, co-owner Ed Schwartz and his partners looked everywhere between Los Angeles and Paso Robles. Their winemaking is done in Santa Maria — smack dab in the middle of one of Santa Barbara County’s celebrated “American Viticultural Areas” — but ultimately Ventura seemed the right place to expand. “We like the fact that Ventura County has a really strong up-and-coming wine trail,” he said, adding, “It just felt better for us here.” It’s a curious thing to see someone ditch a federallyrecognized AVA to start a wine venture in Ventura County, but Labyrinth is not the first winery to decide it’s a good idea. Four Brix Winery moved its operations from Paso Robles to Ventura just a year and a half ago. And Millésimé Cellars’ winemaker, after years of making wine at Sunstone in the Santa Ynez Valley, set up shop in Camarillo last summer. Clearly the region is picking up momentum. When it debuted in 2008, the Ventura County Wine Trail’s map consisted of a few dots scattered across the county’s vastness — more an illustration of wishful thinking than a practical tasting trail. But now, in 2013, what were once lonely dots on a map have become parts of clusters — discernible and continuous tasting trails that would have you drunk before you could finish. After a year marked by a lot of openings and new events, the notion of Ventura County as a destination for tasting is no longer a pipe dream; it’s a full-fledged,

diverse and delicious reality. The form of this growing scene mirrors one that has worked out well in other places known for their wines. Just as off Yanonali Street in Santa Barbara, in Lompoc’s “wine ghetto,” and in lower-Westside Santa Cruz, wineries are clustering together in warehouse districts to create tasting trails that don’t demand much driving. And with each of the winemakers having such different approaches and fruit sources, their proximity to each other ultimately proves more of a blessing than a burden. This is especially obvious at the newly named Off Market Street Tasting Trail, which refers to the chain of tasting options in the light industrial park near the Ventura DMV. When The Cave opened there five years ago,
it seemed like a random outpost for wine culture. Then, in the summer of 2011, Four Brix Winery filled a void when it opened as the only winery in Ventura. That solo status didn’t last long, but no one’s complaining. “If we had another winery open just across this driveway, that’d be really good for business,” said Karen Stewart of Four Brix Winery, whose playful red blends are sourced throughout the state. It certainly could happen, considering how much has changed there since it opened. Just down the street, Panaro Brothers Winery is producing well-aged Central Coast varietals inspired by generations of Italian-American winemaking. Then you have Plan B Cellars, the newest label in the area, which sources its very drinkable reds mainly from Santa continued on 12

Barbara County. And something between a wine/beer bar and a winery, Gone West Cellars opened just down Olivas Park Drive, where it pours flights of 805 wines that include its own Paso Robles zinfandel. “The way we look at it, [as more wineries open] we’re creating a gravity where everybody gets sucked in,” said Marlow Barger of Plan B Wine Cellars. A similar situation is developing in Camarillo, where going south off the Lewis Road exit opens up a very diverse range of tasting options. Camarillo Custom Crush Winery has offered flights of locally grown wines there for decades. Now it’s neighbors with San Vicente Cellars, a family-owned winery specializing in Syrah along with lesser-known bold reds. Also a stone’s throw from them is Millésimé Cellars, where Millésimé Cellars, Camarillo AD PROOF winemaker Brittany Rice is producing small-volume, boutique reds with Client: Two Trees Cafe Ad Executive: Barrett (805) 648-2244 organic grapesWarren and wild yeasts. have so many places to taste that, because of time, money or a busy liver, you have to save some for another day. “In five years, I think you’re going to be able to spread it out and have four different days (of tasting),” said Lauren Belshe of the Ventura County Wine Trail (VCWT), adding “That’s kind of happening right now.” Ventura and Camarillo have seen the most activity in the last year, but there’s still a lot to enjoy elsewhere in the county. In Oxnard, one could begin a plausible tasting trail by starting out at Herzog, the area’s largest producer and the mastermind entity behind the VCWT, then jaunt over to Magnavino Cellars and enjoy the Lodisourced whites and reds. Diverse dining in Ventura County by JR Grant

any of us go out to eat to experience a cuisine unlike our traditional home-cooked familiar-since-childhood meals. Or, conversely, when we want to recreate that experience, we will find a comfort food restaurant that brings us back to recognizable tastes, smells and eating memories. For many first-generation Ventura County diners, the familiarity of home-style comfort food is often available only many thousands of miles away. We have discovered a few hidden restaurant gems, not only for homesick immigrants, but for our gastronomic, cultural and eating pleasure as well. Traditionally, the dominant-culture ethnic foods of choice have been Chinese, Italian and Mexican. While there are many variations of these foods, both regionally and ethnically, the intercultural prevalence of egg
rolls, pizza and tacos cannot be ignored. When we step out of that familiar box, we can find a multitude of fascinating and delicious options right here in our own back yard. My favorite specialty ethnic cuisine does fall, however, within one of the familiar country food styles: Chinese. But rather than just a variation on traditional Chinese cooking, I’m speaking about dim sum. Large Chinese restaurants all around the world have a variation on the Chinese Saturday or Sunday family tradition of a multigenerational meal with rolling carts of small offerings (Chinese tapas, if you will). Ventura County has one restaurant in particular that offers an excellent dim sum experience: the Peking Inn in Camarillo. Some dim sum offerings are available whenever the restaurant is open,

but the Saturday and Sunday experience (11 a.m.-3 p.m. each day) is a highlight if you’ve not previously partaken of the dim sum tradition. Since purchasing the restaurant seven years ago, owner Vin Chu continues to improve the quality of the ingredients (purchasing as many ingredients locally as possible); and for those unfamiliar with dim sum dining, it might just become a new weekend dining habit. Don’t be afraid of the chicken feet, they really are quite tasty! Also in Camarillo is a brand-new dining and shopping experience: Camarillo International Supermarket and Restaurant. Specializing primarily in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern spices, bakery goods, meats, cheeses and prepared food, the market also has an outstanding Persian restaurant. There is a different daily special each day, including baghali polo (a lamb shank in a tomato sauce with dill, lima beans and saffron), khoreshteh gheymeh (an eggplant stew with diced beef, onions, yellow split peas and a tomato saffron sauce served over basmati rice). My favorite is on Wednesday, the zereshk polo, which is sour barberries (similar to red currants) mixed with basmati rice and saffron, served with a juicy and falls-off-the-bone-tender baked chicken. The kebabs are also juicy and fresh tasting, with an under-taste of lemon juice, saffron and turmeric, most served with a scallion and cucumber salad and a slice of grilled pepper. The restaurant area is interesting
and very reminiscent of a small take-away market eating area in the Middle East. It is about the food and the companionship, not about the fact that one’s napkin is simply the box of Kleenex on the table. If you are shopping for Mediterranean ingredients or desire to experience quick Persian cuisine, this new Camarillo Supermarket absolutely needs to be on your radar. local culture that uniqueness and exotic, regional authenticity can almost never be encountered in Ventura County. One particular regional cuisine and authentic cultural experience is possible, however, also in Oxnard, at El Oaxaco Restaurant and Panaderia on Fourth Street. If you come into this restaurant and expect to be warmly greeted (unless you are from a particular Oaxacan village), you will be disappointed, as you also will be if you expect any sort of chips and salsa. Nevertheless, if you want to sample a Oaxacan local specialty — chapulines — you are absolutely in the right place. This dish is simply pan-fried grasshoppers, crunchy and earthy in taste and texture, which are deliciously followed by the signature Oaxacan dish tlayuda con carne, a large plate-sized, thin, crunchy, toasted handmade tortilla covered with refried beans, asiento (unrefined pork lard), cabbage, avocado, tomato, your choice of meat, handmade (on the premises) Oaxacan cheese and salsa. It is not fancy, and not designed for the tourist trade, but there is no more authentic regional Mexican restaurant in Ventura County than El Oaxaco. Crossing the Pacific to another continent entirely is the brandnew (and very authentic) Korean restaurant Sura. This entry into Ventura County’s culinary ethnic rainbow is a terrific and phenomenally authentic Korean dining experience, brought to Ventura County by chef Jhon Kim and his wife Yuri. Sura is a clean, crisp space with simple lines, burlwood tables and a gleaming and inviting kitchen/bar area at the entrance. This restaurant does not have a vast menu, but Korean favorites abound. The tofu soup is particularly delicious, as is the spiced pork; and the little pots of condiments (banchan) are different daily, depending on ingredient availability and chef decision. Also each day, a different kimchee is offered (a spicy cucumber version was terrific), and the more traditional cabbage, chili, garlic. The bok choy combination is always available. The firm, sweetened black beans (to be eaten one bean at a time) are a delight, and for the equivalent of Korean comfort food, Sura is a mustvisit destination. Another unique ethnic favorite is a restaurant at the corner of Main Street and Ventura Avenue in Ventura, Himalaya, which offers the cuisine of Nepal, India and Tibet. Although some of the Indian dishes may seem familiar to those diners who frequent Indian restaurants, two standouts for me are the sherpa curried goat (very moist and tender chunks of goat meat in a tomato-y cilantro gravy with an under-taste of garam masala and clove. Also unique, and authentically Nepalese, is the dal bhat tarkari, which is the standard Nepalese lentils and rice dish, but here can be ordered also with marinated ground chicken (or vegetables only, if preferred) in a thin dough and steamed, with a very unique homemade lentil sauce. Ventura County is blessed with many amazing possibilities for sampling authentic, unique and unusual ethnic food offerings. Rather than settle for the usual fall-back choice for ethnic cuisine, these restaurants offer diners a one-ofa-kind dining experience: Peking Inn (Chinese dim sum) 330 N.
