H Letting Go
He plods through an Ojai warehouse in black pants, dark shades, boots, and a serious looking racing jacket. Which is enough to momentarily confuse me. The Buddhist thing had thrown me off; I was expecting a softer look from Guy Webster (cover and p. 30). Not necessarily a robe and bare feet, but something a bit less rugged. He “owns” (the quotes will make sense in a moment) a collection of motorcycles, sure, and at seventysomething his whiskery face has earned its texture. Still, after seeing some of his photography online—particularly the sensitive black-andwhites: a pregnant silhouette, a curious child peering through a torn screen, a wind-blown gate, an empty concrete wall—and reading about his adherence to Zen Buddhism, I was expecting… Well, something different. And the oxymorons were just beginning to flow. After all, how can a man who eschews the very notion of ownership be a collector in the first place? “These could all go up tomorrow,” he says dismissively of the priceless Italian racing bikes in his collection, illustrating the Buddhist axiom of nonattachment. (My inner provocateur wants to saddle up a vintage Ducati and head toward Wheeler Gorge. What then?) Of course, there is no making sense of anything; the world is full of paradoxes. Guy Webster

is Guy Webster is Guy Webster: a man with a classic story and a sizzling collection of street bikes—a collection that motorcycle cognoscenti regard as the finest in the world. Most of all, when it comes to this particular issue of Ventana, Guy Webster has passion. February in the magazine world generally means one thing: Valentine’s Day. But rather than bombard you with sweet holiday clichés—we do tempt you with one (p. 12)—we opted to build this issue around the theme of passion. Not love. Not hearts and roses. Passion. For Webster, the collecting means more than the collection. His passion lies in perfecting each bike. And to be sure, keeping the rides true to their roots can make him seem a bit obsessive. This is a man who flew to Italy for a bicycle pump, who tracked down a one-person racing seat for his 1964 Moto Morini Corsarino SS because, by God, that’s how it rolled off the production line and that’s how it had to be in his collection. He finally found the studded black seat for a hundred bucks in a Rimini swap meet. Odd? Perhaps. But I prefer to think of Webster as inspired. As Angela Monet said, “Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music.” Who was Angela Monet, anyway? Strangely enough in this age of knowledge congestion, no one seems to know. A Google search turns up nearly 10,000 links, but zero information beyond the famous quote. I like to picture her as a little old lady with a gleam in her eye and a penchant for passion. I put a lot of stock in the words of the elderly. They talk less than young people, leaning toward timeless truths. And one thing they say repeatedly is that you should do what you love. Life is short. Happy Valentine’s Day, and thanks again for reading. Keep the emails coming. I always appreciate your comments and suggestions. MATT KATZ, EDITOR MattK@VentanaMonthly.com

Spirit of Place
Q & A with Ventura photographer Jim M ar tin BY MATT KATZ PHOTOS BY JIM MARTIN
j
Jim Martin works at the intersection where technical photography collides with spontaneous moments in time. In his images, new life emerges from familiar corners, places many of us know yet rarely explore. He devotes most of his photographic energy to his hometown of Ventura and its environs, revealing fantastic worlds hidden in plain sight. The local angle is his forte. And in his new book, “Inspirations,”Martin points, aims, and shoots—capturing the spirit of place that characterizes our county.
You own an architectural design company but just released a book of photography. Which profession would you rather pursue? Photography would be a great occupation, but it’s a difficult business. This is something that’s more of a passion, which I would like to share with everybody else—for example, doing the book. I didn’t do the book to make money; I did the book to share the passion. … For now, design pays the bills. I would love to go the photography route, and I’m going to continue that way. We’ll just see where it goes.

FEBRUARY 2009
Which is the deeper passion, the making of the photo or the moment itself? I would say the moment itself. But there are a lot of moments when I wish I had a camera to capture it. … When I capture it, I can go back and reflect on that moment. Almost every image, I know just what I was thinking at that time. What is the most satisfying photo you’ve made? An image (opposite top) that was not in the book. I really wish it could have been, but the book had already been printed by the time I got the shot. I had envisioned it, and had been looking for those conditions, that angle and everything, for a long time. Even though there were dark clouds where the sun was going to rise, there was a small opening just above the horizon. So I decided to go swim with the camera just in case, and sure enough… The sun was there for only about four minutes, and then it disappeared above the clouds. Twenty minutes later it was pouring rain. I was at the right place at the right time.
There’s an element of fantasy to many of Martin’s photos. Top to bottom: The moon, Venus, and Two Trees; inside out, Ventura Rivermouth; looking west from Taylor Ranch; sunrise fire.
What’s the most unique local vantage point you’ve found? The top of Taylor Ranch (at the western edge of Ventura), the highest peak on the mountain. I was given access to hike up there, and it was pretty brutal: a three-and-a-half hour hike, which I wasn’t expecting. The sun was getting ready to set and I had to hurry, so I was exhausted by the time I got there. But it was a vantage point I really wanted to capture because nobody ever sees this view of Ventura. So it’s kind of a special image to me. … The photo on page 50 (right), that’s just me spinning the tripod around. What’s your favorite Ventura County moment? For sure, the sunrises and sunsets we have. Especially surfing, you get to see a lot of that. When you’re in the water on a mirror glass day, you’re just wishing you had a camera. You know, you’re wishing you could somehow document that—because it just seems too good to be true. v See more of Jim Martin’s photography online at JMShots.com and exhibited yearround at Red Brick Gallery, 328 E. Main St. in Downtown Ventura.

GIVING BACK
Talking about life, cancer, and life with cancer. These are not light topics. But when eight women battling the disease spent a few days together at Ojai’s Lavender Inn, a welcome weightlessness checked in. Perhaps their proximity to a flower known to alleviate anxiety, depression, and stress helped. Or maybe it was the opportunity for the ladies to lounge around in their pajamas, like they did back when their worries were much smaller. The retreat was part of a new program called INNcourage, created by the Lavender Inn’s owner, Kathy Hartley. Women with cancer are provided an opportunity to explore healthy lifestyle options while relaxing in a supportive environment—a place where stress is denied a room key. One of the first events of its kind, Hartley plans to not only continue hosting annual INNcourage retreats, but also to introduce the idea to the California Association of Bed & Breakfast Inns in the hope that other properties will donate their settings for philanthropic causes. “I just thought the inn would be a great place to help people who are going through chemotherapy get away, to think about something else and take care of themselves—especially people who can’t afford to,” said Hartley, who collaborated with the Ventura County Medical Resource Foundation, a group dedicated to enhancing the availability and quality of health care programs and services for all Ventura County residents. “We were honored to be a part of Kathy’s dream,” said Victoria Chandler, the foundation’s executive director. Chandler helped connect Hartley with medical oncologist Dr. Evan Slater MD and his staff at the Ventura County Medical Center Oncology Unit. Each of the participants selected for the program were patients of Dr. Slater. It took just a month-and-a-half for the Lavender Inn and other local businesses to organize a variety of activities including a candlelight yoga stretch,

facials, paraffin hand wax treatments, foot massages, and a makeup application tutorial. The event also included a cooking class that focused on healthy eating strategies and a daily diet of fine cuisine. At the conclusion of the retreat, husbands, family, and friends attended a going away party for the women, who went home with a gift bag of donated items. One of the retreat’s pivotal events was a group life coach session initially planned as a series of one-onone coaching sessions. After only hours of knowing one another, the women decided to do the session together. “It surprised me that they got so close so quickly,” said Hartley. During the session, the life coach touched on crucial topics for cancer patients such as self-care, finding opportunities during crisis, and letting other people take care of you. “Once people started sharing their stories, I was able to share things that I hadn’t been able to share with family or friends. I just felt like this big weight had been lifted off my shoulders,” said cancer survivor Sydnee Mortensen, who in 2005 was diagnosed with metastasized colon cancer that had spread into her liver and lungs. Another participant, Patricia Pearson, said that words could barely express how healing the experience has been for her. But she tried to find the right ones, and succeeded: “Being at the Lavender Inn was a wonderland for my soul. I came home rested, and feel like I was part of a family.” v

y As You Like It
Passion comes in many packages. In Somis, it’s cloaked in the dreamy softness of alpaca fur.
BY DEWITT SMITH PHOTOS BY MICHAEL ROBINSON CHAVEZ
You want warm and fuzzy? For a touch of tactile ecstasy, try sinking your fingers into the deep, soft fur of an alpaca. Then take it to the next level—being nuzzled by a dozen or so alpacas with their long furry necks, big round eyes, and poufy curls framing impossibly sweet faces. This was the nirvana moment I experienced when I went to visit As You Like It, an alpaca ranch in Somis. Ranch owner and breeder Claudia Weintraub had taken me into the paddock where her herd of ten or twelve adorable creatures, including a three-week-old baby, gathered around her like children flocking to their mommy. Standing anywhere from waist- to shoulder-high and looking like a cuddly cross between E.T. and a poodle, the alpacas shifted their attention and moved over to surround me. A beautiful black one sidled up, took a sniff, and then lay down on my feet, leaning her head and neck against my shins as if they were a headrest on her favorite lounger. Then she started to hum, something alpacas do when they’re happy. “I’ve never seen Lady Bug do this before!” Weintraub exclaimed. “She’s usually pregnant and very stand-offish.” While Lady Bug was busy humming, the rest of the herd snuggled closer for some petting. There was nothing else to do except sink my fingers into their mop tops and talk to the animals. It was a pure Dr. Doolittle moment. Weintraub, a former English teacher, laughed and continued chatting with her darlings, most of whom have Shakespearean names— Romeo, Juliet, Lavinia, Mechuchio, Phoebe. The non-Shakespearean names belong to alpacas she’s boarding or breeding, like Moses, Caffe, and, of course, dear Lady Bug. CONTINUED ON PAGE 25

So how does a Swiss-born woman end up in Ventura County raising alpacas? Her story started with a trip to California to go to language school in the ‘80s. She ended up married, living and raising children in Thousand Oaks. In 2003, Weintraub and a friend visited a local alpaca ranch and that was it: she “fell in love with the animals.” After visiting a couple more ranches, she let her imagination soar. “I saw it was a business, and the more I researched, I saw it had great potential. I started by buying four pregnant females,” Weintraub said. Having taught English, she thought it would be fun to give the animals names from Shakespeare. “We very quickly went from four to six, so we leased the three-acre property in Somis and I quit my teaching job.” And that was the birth of As You Like It. But to be sure, Weintraub wasn’t the only alpaca rancher in Somis. The small, unincorporated area of Ventura County is home to a handful of passionate alpaca breeders and borders, including Alpacas at Windy Hill, the largest alpaca ranch in California. Beyond cuteness, the point of the business is the fur. Shearing is done once a year, and finding the right shearer is important. “I tried it, but if you’re not good at it, you’re looking at a really bad alpaca hair cut for a couple of months,” Weintraub said. The average yield for each alpaca ranges from three to seven pounds, but not all fur is equal. The sheared hair is sorted by body part, and the luxuriously silky fibers of baby alpaca hairs are the most highly prized. Once sold, the fleece is sent to hand-knitters and spinners, who wash spin it, and knit it. How the fleece is spun depends, of course, on the end it, product. Mufflers and sweaters are done with very fine yarns, while jackets require a heavier yarn. Jackets are also felted, a process whereby the fleece is compressed into a felt-like material. What’s unusual about alpacas is their variety of colors—it means the luxurious yarns don’t have to be dyed, making them even more prized as a natural product. But in Weintraub’s eyes, her herd is so much more than product. “There’s something very magical about these animals… I just fell in love with them. Those big eyes, and when you touch them and feel how soft they are… When I go to the ranch I feel like I’m leaving all the hustle of life behind.” v

BY JAMES SCOLARI PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL ROBINSON CHAVEZ VINTAGE PORTRAITS COURTESY OF GUY WEBSTER
Although Guy Webster ’s motorcycle museum in Ojai is bright and air y, the atmosphere is thick with nostalgia. Standing among his esoteric collection—which bears such fabled names as Ceccato, Ducati, Moto Rumi, and MV Agosta, and is widely regarded as the nation’s premier collection of vintage Italian racing bikes—one can’t help but wonder at the times and places they traversed, at the intrepid riders who loved them and who were in turn loved by generations of beautiful women. Webster himself evokes a similar speculation: on his lives and times and famous loves, on the places he’s been, the things he’s seen, either through the viewfinder of his celebrated camera or astride one of his legendary machines.

On his website, the word legendary makes an immediate impression. But if “Legendary Photographer Guy Webster” feels somewhat overblown, the feeling won’t last, persevering only as long as it takes one’s browser to load the six simple panes that subsequently present an assortment from his portfolio. Once the slides commence, the moniker proves to be most apt, as the portfolio offers a veritable who’s who of actors, rock stars, and writers from the last four decades: a grizzled Jack Nicholson, a precraggy Keith Richards, Dean Martin, Jimi Hendrix, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mick Jagger, Dennis Hopper, Raquel Welch, Truman Capote. The list goes on and on, until even the most jaded must concede: legendary is the only word that will suffice.
Guy Webster (opposite) has photographed scores of legendary musicians and actors. To hear him talk about the images above and more, go to VentanaMonthly.com/GuyWebster.

Yet if the man’s accomplishments tend to provoke hyperbole, his presence is decidedly down-to-earth. In fact, behind his endeavors one finds a tendency toward a will to commune, to connect, and to share the common thread. His museum stands in tribute to that ethic; open to aficionados and casual observers alike, the bikes are collected less for the sake of ownership than stewardship. Standing among the sparkling machines, he observes, “We really only rent these things for a while before we pass them on to another.” A longtime Buddhist, Webster eschews attachment to objects, which might sound incongruous in a collector, but somehow makes sense in the case of this enigmatic man. “One of these days I won’t be around anymore,” he continues, “and then the bikes will pass into the care of another.” As with the photography, the work serves as a veritable time capsule, expressing the pulse of an age that we might otherwise have left behind. Webster’s detachment from objects notwithstanding, his passion for intrinsic beauty is clear—again, both in the photography of famous faces or the preservation of exquisite racers. He reinforces the idea in the introduction to a catalogue of his collection. “As a visual 32

artist,” he writes, “I see these motorcycles as great works of art. I also see the anthropomorphic nature of the motorcycle: the heart, the lungs, the sinews, and the ligaments. There is an overtly sexual nature, particularly evident in the Italian motorcycle.” Such passion might be identified as a veritable true north to which his compass has unfailingly guided. His imagery is devoted almost exclusively to the art of portraiture. Yet curiously, among the thousands of images in his archive, the listless, static sitting is virtually nonexistent. “I always try to provoke the subject, to make a sensual connection that will bring the image to life,” he explains, an endeavor he found altogether easier when working with the many beautiful women in his portfolio. Given his rugged good looks—as evident now at age 70 as in the dashing self-portraits of decades gone by—it’s easy to understand the air of romance one divines in so many of their eyes. Failing that spark, he confesses a proclivity toward mischief to get the shot: “More than once, when all else failed I’d give the subject a hard pinch on the back of the arm,” he laughs, positing that fiery indignation was at least indicative of passion, the prerequisite of a good portrait.
Webster’s vintage Italian racing bikes represent more than machinery; they are the manifestation of one man’s passion. Guy Webster’s motorcycle museum, Ojai.
Webster’s passion was inspired at an early age, when the celebrated racer Mike Hawthorn paid the family a visit behind the wheel of a 1948 MG TC Roadster. One fast spin on a sunny day and the eightyear-old’s life would never be the same. He acquired his first motorcycle not long after, at the age of 14, despite both the wishes of his mother and the dictates of the law. “It was first and foremost for the love of cars and motorcycles that I ever made money in the first place,” he confides. That love deepened in 1971, when Webster moved his burgeoning family to Florence, Italy, and became acquainted with the Italian racing bikes that would capture and keep his imagination to this day. “One day, a dealer friend of mine beckoned,” he recounts, “and showed me a collection of dozens of these bikes that had fallen out of favor for the sake of newer, cheaper foreign models. He told me that nobody wanted them, and I just couldn’t believe it.” At its height, Webster’s collection swelled to over 300 bikes. But as his appreciation grew his focus narrowed, to the 50 machines that presently comprise his collection—defined as the vintage, handmade Italian racers of the mid-twentieth century. Among the machines are many impossibly rare specimens, some the only surviving examples of their kind. Yet the value, he emphasizes, is beside the point. “I could tell you how much this bike or that one is worth,” he notes, “and sure, it’s a lot of money. But that’s not what this is about.” More to the point, to reckon such passion in dollars and cents is to miss the point entirely. The value of Guy Webster’s collection is reckoned in the same coin as his storied career—as an expression of passion, commemorative of the lives, times, and loves that, yes, comprise the stuff of legend. Truly, it’s the only word that will suffice. v
