H

ere’s how an editor’s note typically doesn’t start: I dread this issue. Every year, it seems, lifestyle magazines are beholden to the romance theme in February, as if Valentine’s Day were the only game in town. Last February we skipped it altogether. Not a mention of hearts or flowers. No subjective roundups of top places to pop the question. No interview with a matchmaker (that was the year before). This time we land somewhere in the middle, focusing not on romance but on relationships—in a broad sense. What do I mean by that? Consider Mark Storer’s Nesting article on page 31. While the featured house, a 1931 Hobson Heights original, is worthy of an article based on its own history, Storer zeros in on the way it has meshed with familial dynamics over the decades, in a sense becoming a member of the owners’ family. Kathleen and Ron Noblin raised their three kids under its roof and it’s now a gathering place for grandkids and extended family as well. Yet in spite of its amplitude, Storer notes, everyone seems drawn to congregate in its smallest quarters: a little room off the entryway where three generations pack together—tents, toys, and all; a 12-by-15-foot breakfast nook Kathleen calls her “favorite place in the house.” Downstairs, a nautical style great room used to be a post-game gathering place for St. Bonaventure High

School football players, led by the Noblin’s son Toby. Now he brings his own boys, and grandma and grandpa are thinking about renovating it for the next generation. Then there’s Maryann Hammers’ piece on Ventura County-based wildlife rescuers (p. 22), which delves into the relationships between three local ladies and native critters big and small, from bobcats to bottle-fed baby squirrels. Animal care: it’s the Roe v. Wade of lifestyle magazine content; passionate opinions on all sides of the issue. My opinion? I think we’re all a bunch of animals. On page 12, Lisa Snider profiles sommelier Michael Denney, whose relationship with the Ranch House restaurant in Ojai goes back to 1980. My wife and I got married at the Ranch House, so I have a soft spot for the place. And it truly is one of the most charming restaurants in California. But that’s not what drew my attention. No, it was Lisa’s description of an intricate web of rubber bands that Denney devised to earthquake-proof his jawdropping collection of wines. Five thousand bottles. Some priced upward of $2,000. Rubber bands. The incongruousness of it all was just too delicious to let slide. And since we can’t get away from the romance theme for long, we take it over the top with a real-life fairy tale (p. 19). Thanks, Paul Feller, on behalf of normal guys, for making our Valentine’s Day bouquets look like weeds. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Castro Family Toy Drive Poinsettia Pavilion, Ventura The 4th Annual Castro Family Toy Drive was held December 15, 2012 at Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Sponsored by Ventura Police Activities League (venturapal.org) and National Charity League Juniors of Ventura County, the event benefitted patients in the Children’s Cancer & Blood Disease Program at Ventura County Medical Center. Patients and their immediate families attended. The Juniors’ upcoming “Boots & Belles” gala will again raise money for the program, which allows local children with cancer and blood diseases to remain in the county for care. Shaken Not spilled Sommelier Michael Denney uncorks a new use for the humble rubber band. By Lisa snider

’d watched him with an intense curiosity over the years

as he sauntered in and out of the arched barrel door with trays of wine. A couple of years ago, I finally got up the nerve to ask if he ever allows guests into the cellar. With a smile, he proudly escorted me into a room roughly the size of a shoebox, where some 5,000 bottles are stacked floor to ceiling (many are, in fact, strapped to the ceiling) using a network of colorful rubber bands. It’s an impression that stays with me to this day. Sommelier Michael Denney started pouring wine at the Ranch House in 1980, after pulling the late shift as a bartender for a few years at the Ojai Valley Inn. “I wouldn’t get off work until two in the morning,” he recalled. A friend heard his laments and encouraged him to take a wine steward job at the historic restaurant, a destination for wine connoisseurs since 1953. But Denny was mainly drawn by the lure of work hours that got him home before midnight. Without any specialized training, he acquired his wine knowledge on the job. “In those days, we’d have up to five wine stewards on the floor,” he explained, “and every Saturday night, we’d pull out six or seven wines and bag them up.” The stewards were expected to spend 15 or 20 minutes alone with the wines making their own personal notes. They couldn’t see the labels until they were done. “When you compare things side by side like that, you learn really quickly.”

Now, he says, they do it a little differently: “We taste every night instead of once a week. We play a game. What would you be willing to pay for this wine? What am I tasting? What does it remind me of?” Wine, he says, mirrors scores of other flavors, and so he encourages his staff to seek out those comparisons. “A banana tastes like a banana. You’ll never get a little apple or a little blackberry out of a banana. And you’ll never get banana out of a blackberry. They taste like what they are. But wine imitates thousands of flavors, and that’s what’s so fascinating about it,” he said. Denney feels that so much of enjoying wine is noticing its subtleties, which is something he not only shares with his staff, but his customers, too. “If you’re paying attention, it’s really fascinating.” With arguably the best wine list in the Tri-Counties, featuring 700 selections on 53 pages, Denney has, over his 32 years at the Ranch House, successfully evolved his award-winning list to suit new trends as well as the recent economic downturn. “When I started buying the wines, we only had 250 on the list,” he explained. “At one time, we had as many as 900. With the recession, I scaled it down to 700, which is still a big list.” As a result, Denney has become more discerning about what goes on that list, no longer buying a trusted purveyor’s entire line, but instead looking for the excep-

tional gems. “Sometimes I taste something that’s so good, it deserves to be on the list. And there are those wines out there that remind you how good wine can be. That’s what I’m looking for.” He’s also keenly aware of how different the customers’ preferences are today. “People used to be more interested in vertical selections of Bordeauxs,” he said, “but those have priced themselves out of the market we have here in Ojai. This isn’t Las Vegas or Paris. People [today] don’t seem to require drinking older wines, as they might have at one time, because palates now are geared toward California and younger wines.” Denney’s list seems daunting, perhaps intimidating, but he’ll be quick to tell you it offers something for everyone’s taste and budget, with prices starting at just 25 dollars. “We like to keep our wine mark-up low,” he said. “We want to see people enjoy the wine, and we want them to come back.” It’s a handful of bottles hovering above the thousand-dollar mark that raises eyebrows, and although those bottles don’t sell very often, customers expect to see them on the list. And once in a while, one of those rare bottles gets dusted off and uncorked. “A year ago last summer a guy came in and bought several,” Denney recalled. “He drank one here and took some with him.” Among the cellar’s high-end vintages are a 1953 Chateau Cheval Blanc for $1,950 and a 1986 Chateau Petrus Bordeaux for $2,200. Once in a blue moon, customers will let Denney sample their wine. He stills remembers one of his first nights on the floor; the diners offered him a taste of a 1966 Chateau d’Yquem, long considered the finest dessert wine in France. “It’s a transcendent experience, just because it just goes on and on and on on your palate, and the flavors are myriad and magnificent.”

Every bottle Denney delivers to the table comes with a story and his verbal tasting notes. At age 65, he says though his memory may fail him with other details, it’s reliably accurate when it comes to wine. “Wine, at this point, is probably the one thing I can still remember. I remember what things taste like.” And he remembers the stories that came with the wine. Like the time he accidentally sprayed Pol Roger Champagne all over Herb Alpert and his wife. Or the time Alan Hooker, the restaurant’s original owner, fell into the creek. And he can tell you anything you want to know about every bottle on his list. “I think the stories behind the wine are interesting,” said Denney. “Things that interest you are easy to remember. It’s worthwhile, and that’s how you make it more enjoyable for the customer, by telling them the story. They get into it more; they pay more attention.” He also remembers the 1994 Northridge earthquake. “I went to my kids’ bedrooms and saw that they were OK, and the next thing I thought about was the wine room.” Though only one bottle was lost, it spurred him to go to work on the web of rubber bands now crisscrossing the bins. “It was the cheapest, easiest thing to do,” he explained. “It works.” For Denney, it’s the stories, memories, and wines all coming together that give him pause to share his epiphany: “It’s a relationship. And [it becomes] a three-way relationship: the people, the server, and the wine itself. That’s the fun part of this job—getting someone excited about something I’m excited about.” v

ONCE UPON A FAIRY TALE A real-life romance. Believe it or not. BY ALLISON COSTA

W

PHOTOS BY AMANDA DRIVER

E’VE ALL HEARD THE FAIRY TALES: the stories of Cinderella, Snow White, and even Rapunzel, enchanting us with their tales of love at first sight, magical kisses, and princes saving the day. But how many of us can say we’ve lived one? Local Lauri Merritt has quite a tale to tell, so tall a tale that even she seems shocked as she recounts the details of her modern day love story. As I sit with Lauri and her love, Paul Feller, in his Carpinteria home, surrounded by the debris of Christmas, they seem like a couple that’s been together forever: finishing one another’s sentences, telling stories in perfect tandem, even deferring to the other to deliver the perfect punchline. It all began just a year ago, with a blind date arranged by friends. Each was a single parent (she to a six-year-old son, he to three kids, ages 13, 10, and 5) searching for a partner—one to click with individually and one who would meld into family life as well. The courtship seemed regular enough until one night in March when Paul mentioned in the most casual of tones that in a few weeks he would be traveling to Sweden... to be knighted. Together they recount the details, of how one week prior to his departure he invited her to come along, and her frenetic race to get the gowns and accessories in order for the Royal Amaranther Ball, where Paul and 11 other royal inductees were to be initiated into the Royal Amaranther Society by the king and queen. She explains that the whole thing felt “very Cinderella,” and recalls giggling to her friends at the insanity of it all. “I’m going off to Sweden with my new boyfriend who’s being knighted. No big deal.” Meanwhile, it was a big deal because once there she too would be added to list of inductees, garnering the title of Dame during the lavish ceremony. Paul managed to keep this detail a secret until the day of the ceremony. “The whole trip was surreal,” Lauri recalls. There was the yacht that escorted them to the royal palace for the ceremony, the bowing before the Swedish Royal Court before being tapped on the shoulder with a scepter from the 1600s. And of course the trumpet music serenading them and the lavish feast that followed. And then there was Paul, spontaneously whisking her off to Rome for a few days.

It was there the couple fell in love. And now they are back in California, in the midst of transitioning from fairy tale to reality, facing the very modern day task of blending their lives and their families. Lauri and her son, Jack, recently moved from Ventura to Paul’s home in Carpinteria. The couple counts their blessings that the transition has gone smoothly, knowing that half the battle is finding the right person, and the other half is finding someone who loves your children. “It has to work with the entire picture, and that is a hard dynamic to find,” says Paul. Not surprisingly, when all four children are around, things can get a bit wild. While Paul is retired from his job as CEO and president of Stratus Media Group, Lauri works full-time as a consultant. Getting the children to school each day and making it to four different soccer games on the weekends, the scene amounts to what Lauri calls “lovely chaos.” Though this love story had a fairy tale beginning, what seems to make it work is that parenting the children is top priority. They each light up as they talk about family dinners and a road trip they took last summer with all four kids. Though they haven’t tied the knot yet (they blush when asked about it), this is a family in the making. All throughout our conversation pervades a sense that this was all just meant to be. From their identical custody arrangements with the children, to their love of classic rock and martinis, to the fact that Lauri had always dreamed of having a big family, there is a sense that there is something bigger at work here. “I always thought I’d have four kids,” says Lauri, “I guess this is how it was meant to be.” v

Where the

Wild things were

As suburban sprawl encroaches on Ventura County’s countryside, humans and native animals encounter increasingly frequent run-ins—with mixed results. MARYANN HAMMERS explores the relationships between three local ladies and the animals they’re committed to helping. Photos by amanda driver

Local wildlife rescuers and rehabbers are gearing up for baby season. From the mountains to the sea, Ventura County’s open spaces are thickly populated with native wildlife. But as homes and streets get built on former wildlands, raccoons scramble through backyards, bunnies run in front of cars, and orphaned squirrels get stuck in trees. And when all the furry and feathered babies are born in springtime, things really get wild. These three women are ready to help wildlife in distress—and the humans who encounter them. 22 | ventana | February 2013

Who ya GONNA CALL?

A

nna Reams’ life mission started 20 years ago when her daughter brought home an injured duck. A former hospital worker, Reams nursed it to health—and in the process, she found her calling. Today she operates Wildlife Care of Ventura County, taking in about 1,000 animals a year, coyotes to crows, raptors to raccoons. She tends to wounds and stabilizes animals until they can be released. (She turns to Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital for X-rays and surgery.) She sees sad cases: hawks suffering from lead poisoning, caused by eating prey riddled with

buckshot. Baby bobcats whose mother was killed. The raccoon shot with seven arrows. “I’ve learned how messed up some people are,” Reams says. Another raccoon got luckier. Someone set a trap near the Metrolink train station. But whoever set the trap didn’t check it for days. By the time Reams got the animal, it was severely dehydrated, front paws badly wounded from trying to claw its way out, and eyes so sunken they were invisible. The situation didn’t look hopeful, but Reams tube fed and rehydrated the raccoon. It will survive. Reams says most tragic encounters could be avoided without traps, poisons, or pesticides. “If

Anna Reams’ commitment to wildlife care began 20 years ago with a single duck and has grown to include hawks, possums, and much more; her nonprofit is permitted to work with all native wildlife except bears, deer, and mountain lions.

you find an injured or orphaned animal, or want help ridding your backyard of nuisance animals, don’t call a pest-control person,” she urges. “Call a rehabber. We’ll assess the situation and help you get the animals to move on. And we won’t charge you.” Reams needs more storage, more supplies, more cash, more food to feed a never-ending parade of hungry mouths. She needs more volunteers. “We are just a bunch of individuals taking it upon ourselves to fix a situation,” she says. A Soft Heart for SQUIRRELS

S

harron Baird has a soft spot for the animal kingdom’s “little guys”—bunnies, possums, gophers, and squirrels. Especially squirrels. The Thousand Oaks resident launched Squirrelmender Wildlife Rehabiliation in 1991 when tree trimmers knocked down a nest of newborn squirrels. Under Baird’s care, all survived and were released. Word got out that Baird could mend sick squirrels, and people began bringing her animals. In one case, a woman spotted a dead mom squirrel, struck by a car, leaving the orphans crying in the tree branches above. With the help of Westlake Village firefighters, those four babies ended up with Baird. A squirrel with a broken leg turned out to be pregnant. She recovered and delivered her baby. “That mama doted on her baby,” Baird said. “I released the two together.” Baird converted an extra bedroom to a convalescent

24 | ventana | Febuary 2013

hospital. Four large outdoor cages are reserved for squirrels about to be set free. “I watch to see if they are hiding food, digging and jumping,” Baird says. Those behaviors indicate the animal can be released. Baird needs more volunteers for transportation and feeding. She welcomes donations—heating pads, soft blankets, unsalted nuts, sunflower seeds, fruit, or pet-store gift cards. She’s grateful that Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital (conejovet.com, 805.495.4671) evaluates and treats wildlife at no charge. During baby season, Baird’s day starts at 6 a.m., feeding up to two-dozen babies every three hours. “There are days I don’t make it out of the room,” she says. But it’s worth it, she says. “It’s such a cool experience to release the animals and watch them climb up into the trees.” Squirrelmender Wildlife Rehabiliation squirrelmender.com, 805.498.8653

As word spread that Sharron Baird was willing and able to help wild animals in need, neighbors came knocking. The T.O. resident has since converted one of her bedrooms into a makeshift convalescent hospital.

No room at the shelter

A

s the county’s new managing veterinarian, Heather Skogerson, DVM expected the orphaned, injured, abused, and abandoned dogs and cats, kittens and puppies. The bobcats, coyotes, owls, and seagulls were more of a surprise. Not that she wasn’t prepared. In her previous position at Solvang Veterinarian Hospital, she treated wildlife emergencies, and she’s on the board of directors for Animal Rescue Team, a Santa Barbara County wildlife rehabilitation organization. She’s bottle-fed babies whose moms were hit by cars, given blood transfusions to bobcats, treated foxes for mange, and cared for a coyote with a broken neck. “We decided to give that coyote a chance. We put a collar on her and kept her in a cage until she could be released,” Skogerson says.

Unfortunately, Ventura County Animal Services—bursting at the seams with dogs and cats—isn’t equipped for wildlife. “We don’t seek out injured wildlife, but I do what I can. I’ll evaluate them, X-ray them, tube feed them, stabilize them, and help them get released when possible,” she says. “If they can’t be helped, I humanely euthanize them.” Sadly, the shelter’s statistics show that euthanasia is the outcome for the vast majority of animals that end up there. Skogerson hopes that will change. Her goal, she says, is to educate the public. Simple steps—such as keeping garbage cans closed—can prevent wildlife encounters that end badly for the animals.

Though VC Animal Services isn’t equipped for wildlife, new managing veterinarian Heather Skogerson will X-ray, tube feed, and stabilize the injured critters, helping them back into the wild whenever possible.

making history

Ron and Kathleen Noblin’s proud Hobson Heights home was built in 1931, but over the last 35 years the family has built a history of its own. MARK STORER pays a visit. Photography by Stephen Schafer

ooking south and southwest from the hills above Ventura High School one takes in close views of Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands. The view on a clear day, blue sky and green sea horizons fading together with the offset of rolling green and beige hills from the islands, sailboats and oceangoing freighters puffing away in the distance, is world-class by any standard.

a craftsman home. They saw a place to raise their growing family. Ron is now a retired ophthalmologist and Kathie is the executive director of the Ventura Ballet Company and the Ballet Academy in Ventura. Here, amid the spectacular scenery, winding and narrow streets, the happy spirits of Christmases, Easters, falls, springs, and winters past, the Noblins raised three children—Toby, Josh, and Rachel—creating a warm, loving environ-

“My grandchild told her mom that she wanted to live in a house like nana’s,” Kathie said with no small measure of pride. The homebuilders who came here knew that. They had to as they started building homes up here as early as the 1920s. And it’s here that Ron and Kathie Noblin came in 1978, the third owners of a custom Spanish Colonial house that had been deflowered by the decorating excesses of the 1950s and ‘60s with carpeting covering every surface and great draperies and curtains drawn against the views. What they saw wasn’t simply

ment for them and a home that is not a museum piece, but very well could be. The Stennett building company built the Noblin’s house in 1931. “They hired craftsmen from Los Angeles,” said Kathie. “There wasn’t much work then, so they were easy to find. They brought them up here and the crews camped out in tents on the property.” Kathie said the crews weren’t in any hurry to finish, as the Great Depression had rendered February 2013 | ventana | 31

finding other jobs difficult. “They took their time,” she continued. “I like to think the result is something really spectacular.” Original tile work on the fireplace in the living room is just one example. Laid in patterns that alternate from traditional placed tile to longer and thinner strips as it gets closer to the fireplace, the attention to detail is apparent. The mantle piece is hand-carved wood, and mahogany is the predominant choice throughout the house for doors, exposed beam ceilings, and even floors in some cases. “These beautiful hardwood floors were covered in carpet when I first came to see the house,” said Kathie. “I came here with our realtor after the previous owners moved out. We spent five hours pulling back drapes and lifting up carpeting to see what we could see.” What they saw was the Channel Islands view that dominates the outside of the house, though a front courtyard planted with a mature olive tree, a magnolia, and several melalucca trees. But inside, the rounded archways that enter the family room, living room, kitchen, and dining area open up a space framed by dark wood and pastel colors that Ron and Kathie chose as they renovated together. Rachel still lives in the pool house, an 1,100-square-foot structure behind the pool deck with an islands view of its own. The walls are filled with family portraits, pictures, and snapshots, and each room has

a story about what happened there from 1978 until today. But Toby, who now lives in El Segundo, and Josh, who stayed local, are never far either, frequently bringing their children to grandpa and nana’s house. “My grandchild told her mom that she wanted to live in a house like nana’s,” Kathie said with no small measure of pride. No one could fault the child. The split stairwell just off the main entrance to the home reveals another craftsman surprise. Looking up to the ceiling, frescoes were painted on the exposed wood and the effect is a story in the heavens: openness rather than confinement as the hand-carved stair railings guide you to the second floor bedrooms and baths. A small room just to the right of the entryway serves as the television room. “We can have the grandkids and the kids over and have all this space, but we all wind up in here. The kids set up their little tents and bring their toys in, we watch a movie or a show, and we’re all in this little space,” Kathie said. Meanwhile, back in 1931 when the craftsmen were taking their time, inspired by the nautical view, they went to work building the basement, which isn’t really below ground since the house sits on a slope. The great room downstairs has been created in the form of the lower decks of a great sailing ship, complete with a porthole window of three-inch-thick glass and exposed redwood beams that run from

floor to ceiling. “The kids used to come down here a lot,” said Ron. Toby, who was a championship football player at St. Bonaventure High School, would bring the team back to this room on Friday nights after the game to watch game films. “We’re thinking of renovating it again so the grandkids can use it,” Kathie said. Outside, the pool gives way to a surprisingly large grass area that gently slopes down to a fenced-off garden where Kathie’s pet giant African tortoise, Sam, lives among palm and fruit trees. “We used to own the land right next door, but we sold it to the neighbors when the kids got older,” Kathie explained. Back inside, the main floor is furnished with a few antiques as well as more modern and practical furniture and appliances. It’s not the kitchen nor the fireplace nor even the ship’s hold that are the favorites. “My favorite place in the house is the breakfast nook,” said Kathie. “It’s where we are every morning and where we eat our meals. All of our kids ate dinner in there, and sometimes their friends and our friends with us.” The room is small, about 12-by-15 feet. A feature of the house is that several of the main floor rooms are smaller than the 4,400-square-foot edifice would seem to justify, but they are functional and beautiful just the same. Turquoise paint now covers the walls of the nook and a built-in china cabinet holds the Noblin’s crystal and dishes. The south wall, of course, is made of large windows opening to that glorious view of the islands. “I get inspired in here,” Kathie said. Inspiration from home is as old as civilization, of course. But even gorgeous views and rolling hills, mild weather and blue skies can grow tiresome after a time. No, what brings us back home are the stories we create there, and the Noblins have a wealth of them. v

Lightening Round This month I bring you a work in progress. A client brought me a 13 carat Citrine that she had been given and four small diamonds from a college ring to make a pendant for her. To do a modern design that would compliment her style and the gems at hand made several bold strokes the perfect answer. However, if I left those strokes solid, the pendant would be so heavy it wouldn’t be a comfortable piece to wear. Now comes the Lightening Round!

the answer was to open the structure. This not only took the excess weight off of the pendant, but allowed me to echo the rectangular lines of the gemstone and bring more harmony to the pendant. During the next few days I will change the support structure of the Citrine so that it joins the harmony and maintains the security for the Citrine. The hard edges you see on the mounting in this image will be slightly rounded to soften look and make it feel great on the neck. I would love to create the Lightening Strike for your style, please come see us!

To make the design so that it was both wearable and remove the clunky feeling that the main structure gave it,
