e can help you review all the options available and help you select the right strategy for your personal situation. For Example, if you are age 59 ½ or older, your 401k plan may allow an “in-service” rollover, allowing your to move some of your 401k dollars to an IRA, without having to leave your job or incur taxes. As with any transaction involving your retirement funds, it’s important to do it correctly, weighing the pros and cons of any strategy to determine if it is suitable for your individual situation. Also, it is important to make sure you are complying with any rules imposed by your plan or the IRS code. Work with someone knowledgeable who knows how to help you sort through your options.

Once Upon a Winter Moon Montessori School of Ojai
Gaszton Gal
Wines from The Ojai Vineyard were paired with tapas from Lorraine Kim Catering during Montessori School of Ojai’s annual fundraiser “Once Upon a Winter Moon.” Live and silent auctions included a Royal Caribbean Cruise and a golf package from CordeValle, A Rosewood Resort, home to a PGA Tour-quality course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Guests enjoyed tray-passed tapas such as rolled tenderloin of beef with watercress and aioli mustard, pan-seared scallops, and warm Mediterranean flatbread with fresh hummus while raising funds for the non-profit school’s Campaign for the Future program.

on Cobb was in high school in North Carolina in 1963. As president of the sophomore class, he was asked to help integrate his school with the white school in town. “I was asked to pick ten students who could be sort of ambassadors and begin to integrate the schools,” Cobb said. “But I was smart enough to know that I couldn’t be one of the ten. I couldn’t turn the other cheek. I knew we’d be weaker if there were confrontations and fights. I didn’t want that.” But integration happened, and Cobb is living proof of a history rife with difficulty, brutality, compassion, and grace. Now a retired engineer, having run his own company and worked for NASA, among others, Cobb is not the only man who ever broke down barriers. In fact, he spends at least two days a week with a group of local men who have all done the same and continue to do so while simultaneously teaching younger generations—of all races—what it means to compete with honor, succeed with humility, and lose with grace. Sitting in the clubhouse at River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard, Cobb, Walace Dailey, Bob Adams, and Dwight Blackledge, all friends who grew up in the south and met when they came to California, have just finished a round of golf. “It’s an elite sport,” said Cobb, 61. “And it’s an expensive sport, too. I played at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana and there were only six black members back then. It

A local group of African-American golfers elevates the game. By Mark Storer Photos by Gary and Pierre Silva hasn’t changed much.” Dailey chimes in, “Everyone thought when Tiger (Woods) came out and played, that would break down the barrier. But that didn’t really happen. It’s still not a sport a lot of African-Americans play.” As members of the Pro Duffers West Golf Club, the men have committed themselves to a game Mark Twain called, “a good walk, spoiled.” But it’s not just getting together to play and have a drink at the 19th hole that drives the Pro Duffers. “We’re part of the Western States Golf Association,” said Blackledge, current president of Pro Duffers West. “Access to golf was unavailable for people of color for so very long. Western States acted as a conduit providing access to African-Americans.” The Pro Duffers are committed to nine principle values: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, confidence, courtesy, respect, responsibility, perseverance, and judgment. “Those are more important than golf,” said Cobb. “Along with providing three to four scholarships of 500 dollars a year and teaching golf to young people, that’s what we’re committed to.” “I consider these guys family,” said Dailey. “We all attend Bethel A.M.E. Church in Oxnard, we’re all in the men’s chorus there. We have a lot in common.” Dailey knows a thing or two about family: each year, he travels to Arkansas for a family reunion that

began 105 years ago when his grandfather, a former slave, began hosting the event. “We haven’t missed a year in all that time,” he said. The secret world of golf has always been a love/hate proposition. The word “duffer,” like the game of golf itself, is Scottish in origin and means a person who loves the game of golf and plays frequently, though not that well. Pro Duffers, therefore, is almost a satirical name. “We laugh at that a lot,” said Cobb. “But Bob Adams is the only man I know of in the United States who’s shot three holes in one between the ages of 70 and 76. That’s pretty good.” Adams is now 77 years old, but his youthful looks and demeanor belie his age. The Pro Duffers were officially chartered in 1982—the organization celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this year—and its formation coincided with the development of River Ridge Golf Course. Herbye K. White, who was head of Oxnard’s Park and Recreation district, which is still responsible for the course and its upkeep, was one of the Duffers’ founders. “There are 1500 members in 30 clubs around the nation,” said Cobb. “We all get together every June for our annual tournament, but the numbers are decreasing.” “The fact is, our children have more opportunities now than we did growing up,” said Dailey, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel. “Our kids are doing more things than we ever dreamed of, and that’s a very good thing. It’s like the Negro League in baseball: once Jackie
Robinson integrated, the Negro League died. That may be slowly happening here as young people do more and more.” “It’s why recruiting for the group is so difficult,” said Blackledge. “Don runs our First Tee program, which gets kids started in the game of golf, and we’re committed to that, but more opportunities exist now than in the past.” As the men talk, one of Cobb’s student golfers, who is not AfricanAmerican, comes to say hello. They embrace and talk briefly. “He is one of the young men I mentored,” explained Cobb. “That’s part of this, too: the special relationships you develop with people. The camaraderie and cohesion we have comes from our cultural experiences and from an innate love for each other.” It’s golf as metaphor, then. The game itself may be unimportant; it’s scaffolding: a structure upon which are built values and principles. And one by one as the Pro Duffers keep swinging for the green, they instill a new generation not just with an appreciation of the game, but with the ability to truly integrate a society that has resisted change for so long. Maybe things have changed more than we thought. v For more information about the Pro Duffers West Golf Club, visit produfferswest.org. A DOG’S LIFE In Thousand Oaks, a pop-up pet store offers animals from the Ventura County Animal Shelter a second chance. MARYANN HAMMERS reports on Shelter Hope.
W
ant to get your heart broken? Stroll through the Camarillo Animal Shelter, where hundreds of penned dogs and caged cats wait to be rescued. Many are strays that have scrounged and struggled most of their sad lives. Others, including many purebreds, were family pets, abandoned or relinquished by their owners. The lucky ones will find a forever home. But it takes a hard heart to not break for the rest. Almost two-thirds of all cats and nearly one-third of all dogs at the Camarillo Shelter are destroyed, according to Ventura County Animal Services. In 2010, 2,183 cats and 2,060 dogs were euthanized. And it’s not just dogs and cats: In 2010, nearly 300 domestic rabbits ended up at the Camarillo shelter. But now, pound puppies and bunnies have a new lease on life, thanks to a one-of-a-kind weekend store at Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks. Shelter Hope Pet Shop is a cheerful place of playful dogs, adorable puppies, and sweet bunnies. Every Friday morning, 20 to 30 shelter dogs are picked up from Camarillo and brought here, in hopes they’ll be adopted. With its soft beds, warm blankets, and smiling visitors, it’s hard to believe this is a satellite branch of the county shelter. “When you look in these shelter animals’ eyes, you see they are just looking for love,” says animal advocate Kim Sill, who came up with the idea for Shelter Hope. “If we can’t get more people to the shelter, we wanted to bring the shelter to the people.” People who can’t stomach going to the pound will love dropping in at Shelter Hope. It resembles a high-end pet boutique, including a retail area stocked with new pet beds, blankets, doggie clothing, and other pet items, all for sale, with proceeds going back to the animals. Bright animal-themed artwork, photographs, and portraits hang on the wall. They’re for sale, too, as are the handcrafted bird feeders. How much is that doggy in the window? The price is identical to the county shelter: For 125 dollars, you get a best buddy, already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, plus a free health exam at any veterinarian in Ventura County. (For pets over

five years old, or owners 65 and older, adoption price is 60 dollars.) Tucked between Golds Gym and the Conejo Art Museum in a space donated by property-management company NewMark Merrill, the shop is staffed by volunteers who feed, cuddle, socialize, and play with the pups. Scott Mazzarano, a volunteer, greeted visitors one afternoon. “Welcome to the Zen Pen,” he joked, while standing in a white-picket fence enclosure of bouncing chihuahuas. He introduces them, one by one: No Name, Elmo, Tanner, Foley, Roxy. And the littlest guy wearing a pale blue sweater? That’s Paco. Why so many chihuahuas? It’s because it’s the number-one breed that ends up stuck in Ventura County shelters—more than 1,700 were impounded last year. “A lot of owners don’t realize that chihuahuas are not accessories,” says Shelter Hope store manager Dani Caouette. “People make an impulse purchase, without thinking it through. These are living animals and need care. This is an addition to your family and a commitment that could live eighteen years.” A bunny habitat, full of homeless domestic rabbits, takes up a corner of the store. “Bunnies are intelligent animals and can be trained to be great pets,” says Caouette. “But they are not Easter gifts.” In the back room, a volunteer trims and shampoos a shih tzu’s matted fur. What a difference a hairdo makes! “Shelter dogs are really good dogs,” Caouette says. “But they don’t look and smell their best. When you bathe and groom them and put them in this posh atmosphere, they shine.” The toughest, saddest part of her job, Coette says, is Sunday night—when she has to return the dogs that didn’t get adopted to the county shelter. She tries to not think about that, and instead focuses on the successes: The shop placed 64 dogs and twelve bunnies during its first six weekends of operation. Still, with more money or manpower, they could help lots more animals. “If we had more volunteers and funding,” Caouette says, “we could be open every day—and have a room for cats.” v More information online at shelterhopepetshop.org.
HOW TO HELP ADOPT DON’T SHOP “Don’t support online breeders or pet shops that sell animals from puppy or kitten mills,” says Kim Sill, who helped launch Shelter Hope Pet Shop. “Many people don’t realize that these animals’ parents probably never saw the light of day.” DONATE Animals at Shelter Hope and the Camarillo Shelter need old blankets and towels, cat trees, beds, food, treats, biscuits, harnesses, collars, and leashes. Even dish soap and sponges will be put to good use. (Cat items dropped off at Shelter Hope will be delivered to the Camarillo Shelter.) GIVE TIME “We desperately need volunteers,” says store manager Dani Caouette. Volunteers, who work in two-hour shifts, care for and socialize animals, help with office tasks, launder blankets and towels, and assist visitors.

A contemporary approach to pursuing the dream. By Leslie A. Westbrook
Sand castles and moon beams. Crashing surf and epic sunsets. Who doesn’t daydream of living on the Pacific, of stepping out their front door to hit the waves, watch dolphins frolicking in the surf, or stroll the seemingly endless shoreline, cup of java in hand? 88
February 2012 | ventana | 21
Top, from left: Abundant glass and concrete, materials made largely from sand, reflect the coastal setting. Expansive windows allow the outside in, a prerequisite considering the location. The open kitchen has granite countertops, and the dining area and seaside seating provide plenty of room for entertaining. Opposite bottom: A media room with 7.1 surround sound and a 129-inch screen is just one of the home’s many luxe perks.
The dream, and the subsequent realization of their dream—to own a beach house with mesmerizing views, in this case a straight shot across the channel to Santa Cruz and Anacapa islands—began for Jim and Deborah Herzoff nine years ago when they purchased a little wooden house on the sand at Mandalay Beach in Oxnard. Over cocktails during numerous escapes from L.A., the couple envisioned expanding their vacation house. So in 2009, they designed and completed a concrete and glass contemporary structure, with the help of Oxnard’s Peter Fleming Construction and the Beverly Hills-based architect Phil Brown, creating an abode that reflected their experience of the spot. “I wanted a house with waves, since we have this great wave machine in front of us,” laughed Jim, who collects black and white photography, sports memorabilia, and Lalique crystal. “We designed curved ceilings and a curved copper roof over the entrance gallery to reflect this.” What began as a part-time vacation escape turned into a full-time residence when the couple and their daughter, Toby, along with their dog, Blue, made the leap and moved to the beach pad three years ago. The Herzoffs are rightly proud of their efforts. Details include Lutron lighting and window shades that operate at the flick of a

button, heated floors, a solar panel system, and built-in speakers throughout the house. There’s no need to buzz off to a movie theater; the media room has a 129-inch screen and amazing 7.1 surround sound. But then who needs all that when the house sits on Mandalay’s largest frontage beachfront lot, with views that span more than 180 degrees. Materials used throughout the house reflect the coastal setting. Glass and concrete—both of which are made largely from sand— abound. The beach location draws visitors, of course, and with four bedroom suites (two are beachfront) and six bathrooms, there’s plenty of room. The open kitchen boasts granite countertops, and the dining area, living room, and oceanfront seating area provide plenty of space for entertaining. But while meandering the shoreline collecting shells and sea glass may be fulfilling, it’s even better knowing there’s a Jacuzzi tub in the master bath that changes color to enhance one’s mood. Still, all good things must come to an end: the Herzoff family hopes to make yet another change of residence in the near future, and have put their house on the market. If you’re sold on the dream, go ahead and take the plunge. All you need is a cool $3.8 mil or so. Pocket change, for living the dream. v

Vintage style Alchemy and Artistry in the Digital Age
In the cyber-obsessed modern world, photographer Luther Gerlach is a throwback to slower—yet far less simple—times. SALLY RICE focuses on the resurgence of a timeless art.
O
n Creek Road, a two-lane country byway, an old GMC cube truck spray-painted with clouds and graffiti slowly winds eastward toward Ojai. It’s carrying strange cargo: huge plates of glass, and chemicals like nitrocellulose (aka gun cotton), silver nitrate, and ferrous sulfate. Sharp beams of filtered light crisscross the road like cobwebs under the afternoon sun. Just past Camp Comfort, the truck pulls over beside a stream, under the shade of an enormous oak with a split V-shaped trunk. The cabin opens, and out steps Luther Gerlach, master of wet-plate colloidal photography, a process invented in England in 1848 when the art of photography was born. The truck, which once belonged to a plumber, now serves as Gerlach’s custom-built mobile darkroom. He hops into the back and begins the arduous task of unloading his

photographic equipment and setting the stage for a shoot. Gerlach is one among a handful of photographers in the world whose expertise lies in producing fine art images with the original techniques used by photographers in the mid-19th century. He is also the resident expert on historical photographic processes and technologies for the Getty Museum, and he’s conducted more than 200 workshops and lectures over the past few years. From the outside looking in, it appears that Gerlach, who now lives in Ventura, has led a charmed life. Born and raised in Minnesota, he spent an adventurous childhood traveling the world. His father, an anthropologist and professor at the University of Minnesota, took the family abroad whenever possible. “My dad did his PhD work in Kenya at the School of African and Oriental Studies—that’s where I was conceived,” Gerlach says with a broad

Prices are skyrocketing as more people embrace the original photographic process. Right: Wet-plate collodion photography renders timeless images.

grin. Together, during the summer months and school holidays, the family traveled to exotic destinations including Haiti, Jamaica, Tahiti, Moorea, Germany, and England. A strong academic, Gerlach was gifted in the sciences as well as the arts. In college, he discovered his passion for biology, and eventually received his degree in the subject. “For a long time, I really thought that was where my career was headed,” he says. “But even as a biologist, I always had a camera with me.” Gerlach took to photography at a young age, following his father’s lead. “Wherever he went, he always brought his camera, and so did I,” Luther explains. “There are dozens of shots of me as a child with my little blue Diana camera strung around my neck. It was a plastic toy, of course, but my dad always said, ‘There is film in it Luther. Your photos are mixed in with mine; I don’t know who took which photo, you or me.’”
“There were literally hundreds of cameras in there,” Gerlach says, beaming. “Back then, everyone was looking for the small 35 mm variety, so the old, large-format cameras were cheap. I realized I could refurbish them. I had been reading all these books about photography, and I thought, ‘Hey, these are the cameras Ansel Adams used, and there are his lenses.’ No one ever complained about the quality of Adams’ work.” Driven by his newfound passion, Gerlach sold the camera he had at the time and began investing in large-format originals. He began with an 8 x 10, and then moved up to a 12 x 12, and a 16 x 20. “All the early photographic processes I was interested in were contact prints. That means the size of the negative is the same as the final print. So a 16-by-20-inch camera produces a 16 x 20 print. Wow, that would hang really well on a wall, and I didn’t have to do much enlargement work.”
“The problem with the digital world is that the camera does the thinking for you, and even so-called professional photographers lack the skills and understanding of how the process works.” It was encouragement that would certainly pay off. This past Christmas, Gerlach’s family found the vintage Diana camera he so loved as a child, and gave it to him as a present. It now sits on a shelf in his studio beside his other professional cameras and lenses. Gerlach is grateful for the photographic skills he learned with his father, such as how to use a handheld light meter. “You know,” he says with conviction, “the proper way to learn photography.” Gerlach is not a big fan of modern photography, although he studied photography at the Institute of Art in Minnesota after receiving his degree in biology. “The problem with the digital world,” Gerlach explains, “is that the camera does the thinking for you, and even so-called professional photographers lack the skills and understanding of how the process works.” In the early ‘80s, Gerlach fell in love with a ballerina, and together they moved to Santa Barbara so the dancer could be closer to her family. He opened a woodworking business, and on the side pursued his passion for fine art black-and-white photography. But money was tight, and Gerlach couldn’t afford new camera equipment. So one day he went to a camera swap meet, held at the local fairgrounds. That single event changed the course of Gerlach’s life forever. That’s where he discovered large-format cameras. 34 | ventana | February 2012
Eventually, Gerlach trained himself to not only restore antique large-format cameras, but also to build them from scratch. “In my woodworking business, I collected a lot of wood and used it to build this camera here,” he says, pointing to the 22 x 30, 85-pound camera set on a tripod a few feet away from the truck. “If you know how to restore a camera, you can build a brand new one in the same historical style.” Together with his friend and fellow camera maker Patrick Alt, Gerlach made the camera, capable of producing a 22-by-30-inch image. It is currently the largest wet-plate collodian camera in the world. The lens is the only component of large-format cameras that cannot be reproduced. Over the years, Gerlach has collected more than 200 original, historical lenses that date from the 1840s through the early 20th century. Current prices for the original lenses are rapidly rising, as people begin to understand and rediscover the beauty of the original process of photography versus working in digital. “It’s becoming an ‘in thing’ now, to work in historical processes,” he says, showing me one of the long lenses. “This one here runs about ten thousand dollars.” The process begins by carefully pouring the chemical collodion over a piece of glass. It is then immersed in a bath of silver nitrate. While still wet, the plate is inserted into a sealed

box for transport from the darkroom to the camera, where it is inserted into a special plate holder inside the camera for exposure. The photographer then removes the “cap” on the lens, and the plate is exposed to light. Exposure time can be anywhere from a few minutes to ten minutes. Once exposed, the plate is then removed, revealing the photograph. In a simple analogy, the wet-plate colloidal process produced the very first Polaroid-type image. Yet, as primitive as the wet-plate process might appear, it produces the finest grain film made in the history of photography. Here’s how Gerlach describes the difference between wet-plate and modern film photography: “If you’ve ever taken a piece of modern film and held it up, without an image on it, it’s foggy and cloudy. A piece of glass (the negative) is perfectly clear. Then you have molecules of silver, versus crystals that modern film is made of. It is so unbelievably fine that if you take a photograph of a leaf shot from far away and blow it up, you’ll be able to see the caterpillar holes in it. You’ll never get that with modern film. And in digital, it will never ever happen. It’s an amazing process: difficult, frustrating, and slow. But it’s addictive.” After a long day shooting, Gerlach relaxes on an oversized leather club chair in his Ventura studio. In front of him: a wall of beautifully framed photographs he’s shot, all sizes and dimensions. Centered, in a frame set inside an antique box propped on a low table, is a photograph of his eight-year-old daughter, Amelie. Angelic with soft brown curls that drape
over her shoulder, she is sitting in a chair, facing the camera with a sweet expression while holding a dead bird. The image is slightly eerie, and yet beautiful and serene. Other framed still life images of fauna and flora are dreamy, romantic, and timeless. Beautiful imagery, mesmerizing and captivating. One photograph depicts a female nude, a popular subject matter that emerged in the late 19th century known as “odalisques,” meaning “reclining nude.” The young woman is lying backward, facing down, head first over a cascading wall of large rocks that spill into a pool of still waters. It is strongly reminiscent of the pre-Raphaelite paintings popular in the 19th century by such artists as Millais and Rossetti. As he sits staring at the photographs on the walls and other framed images that are too big to hang—instead they rest on the floor, leaning against furniture—Gerlach says he doesn’t think he’s accomplished much in his life: “The more you do, the less you feel you’ve accomplished. I have so much more I want to learn, it’s frustrating. The only true bliss in life is ignorance.” Despite Gerlach’s proverbial “artist temperament” of self-criticism, he’s got a blowout year ahead of him. In April, he’s off to Amsterdam to teach workshops. After that, he’ll be in the south of France doing the same. And just this morning, Finland emailed inviting him to be an artist in residence. “Whatever that means,” Gerlach sighs. “But kidding aside, I’m really excited. I feel that this year I will have great opportunities.” v

February 22 – April 1 | Sylvia White Gallery, Ventura Immersed in Western as well as Asian art history, aesthetics, and theories of brushwork, Hardy has a long relationship with living and working in Japan. Along with the paintings are a new series of small porcelain sculptures. Made in collaboration with ceramist Trevor Ewald, these extend Hardy’s work done during several visits to Arita, Japan. There, at the invitation of a traditional kiln, he glazed production wares with unexpected themes, extending and subverting venerable tradition. The new ceramics are inspired by a series of his late ‘90s paintings featuring garment forms from 15th and 16th century Northern European engravings to which he added components of tattoo and pop themes. An artist’s reception will be held February 25 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. 1783 E Main St., Ventura. For more information, visit artadvice.com.

exclamation! “We don’t copy what’s new, I create what’s next!” —Bob Lynn
I naturally called this piece “Exclamation!” The down stroke is a spiral Quadra surface that tapers as it goes. The gem is mounted in a sandblasted bezel. I particularly like this design for setting diamonds that are square, emerald cut, or pear shaped. I built this to be a size that you can wear with anything from jeans to Donna Karan and have it fit right in with your wardrobe and lifestyle. The average size is around an inch and a quarter long and can set any gem from about a half carat up to about four carats.
