MARIANA SCHULZE

EDITOR’S NOTE

RIGHT AS RAIN

I

nteresting things can happen when you combine wine and paint. It can be a dangerous combo or a catalyst for creativity. In the case of this month’s cover, I’d say the latter won out. Michael O’Kelly (cover + page 29) is a fascinating character, a likeable guy and a great artist. I first got to know of him around 2007 when he was co-founding the Ray Bradbury Theatre and Film Foundation, and what struck me was that not only did he have a vision, he also had the drive to manifest that vision. Big ideas are not particularly rare; but bringing those ideas to life—now, that’s a different story. Thousand Oaks recently held an open forum called “Visioning 2064” to discuss the city’s next 50 years. Time will tell if anything comes from this, but it seems like a good idea. In theory, anyway. From what I’ve seen, the best ideas tend to emerge organically, around a campfire or at a quiet two-top in a wine bar. Perhaps from the maelstrom of a raging party. Any setting where creative types can muse on infinite possibilities and gab freely. The next big idea will likely begin with two simple words: What if… And I’m quite certain it’ll come from an atypical mind. Bradbury, of course, was the prototype of a visionary thinker: a writer who turned the world on its head and shook out galaxies of atypical ideas—some of which turned out to be spot-on predictions of the future. Unfortunately, most ideas never fly beyond a few sentences, and that’s partly because visionaries tend to color so far

outside the lines that the bureaucratic herd can’t follow; logistics have bogged down many a grand notion. But when just one of those starry ideas explodes, it’s wildfire down here on planet Earth. Everything is impossible. Until it’s not. So anyway, we green-lit a profile of Michael, and as expected he’s got quite a backstory. An unconventional cover seemed appropriate. Our monthly schedule, while stifling at times, gives us freedom to roll the dice and test out possibilities that might not have made the cut if we weren’t stepping up to bat again in a matter of weeks. Of course we couldn’t get through February without a little love. Tree Bernstein’s article about Gary and Betsy Quinn Scofield begins on page 34, but it was an advice column she wrote a couple years ago that helped nudge the lovebirds out of their nest and into marriage. In fact, the starry-eyed couple read two of her columns (advising Betsy to take it slowly at first, then for the two of them to go for it) at their wedding. What I find most appealing about these two is that they seem to truly understand the value of their relationship. They’ve compiled enough life experience to recognize the significance of such a rare union late in life, and fully embrace it. Indeed, there are times when the stars align and the universe works with well-oiled efficiency. But on this mild winter morning, with the sun shining and early blossoms popping, it feels dangerously like spring. So until the March issue drops, we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a miracle. Thanks again for your support as we continue to spring forward. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

HEAVEN SENT

Antique collector Lisa Toland’s angelic mission to restore a Midtown landmark. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL

T

HE TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP OF THE HISTORIC SHAFFER HOME IN MIDTOWN VENTURA WAS SEEMINGLY A match made in heaven. “We prayed for the right steward of our family home, The house was large by Midtown Ventura standards of the and you appeared,” Mary Warner, the granddaughter of the day (four bedrooms in 2,000 square feet) and boasted a two-car house’s original owners, told Lisa Toland when she came to garage with a mechanic’s bay for oil changes, a basement (with purchase the property, which had been in the same family laundry chute!), and even a gun cabinet for Mr. Shaffer, who for three generations. owned a sporting goods and gun store downtown, in the current Lisa’s response? “The house touched my soul.” location of Tipp’s Thai restaurant. The house was designed with Built in 1927 for the prominent Ventura businessman Albert 66 windows, to accommodate the Shaffer’s daughter who was G. Shaffer and his wife, Maude, the house stayed in the family losing her sight—and all the original windows, except for one, from the date of construction until June of 2013 when it was sold remained intact after the floors were leveled and the foundation to Toland, who decided to seek landmark designation as well as a earthquake-braced and bolted by the new owner. Mills Act contract to protect the family’s legacy. Fortunately for Lisa, who “likes to restore, not remodel,”

OPPOSITE: An 1820 ladder back chair rests in front of a 1780 work table that Toland uses as a desk. The corner table stand and original blue mammy bench below the window date back to around 1800, and the fireplace mantle came from a mid-19th-century Boston hotel.

most of the house and its fixtures and built-ins were kept in place over the decades. All but one of the light fixtures remained, as well as beautiful wooden floors. She did, however, replace linoleum flooring with small tiles typical of the period in the master bathroom. Lisa Toland grew up in Los Angeles and raised her family, including four kids, in a handful of Ventura County locations (Westlake Village, Somis, Camarillo, and the Santa Rosa Valley) before moving to Midtown two years ago. She purchased the house because her last adult child was leaving, she was now single, and “it was time to make a change.”

What she didn’t change was her fine antique collection. Toland has been collecting for 40 years, mostly East Coast pieces of furniture from the Colonial period in American history (14921763), which work surprisingly well in the Spanish Revival style house with its handsome Batchelder tile fireplace. The oldest piece in her collection is a Pilgrim table in the guest bedroom; many other pieces represent William and Mary, Heppelwhite, Chippendale, and Sheraton periods. One of Lisa’s favorite pieces, and one that grabs the eye upon entering the house, is the 10-foot-long dining table that is an antique weaving loom, made circa 1800 when pieces of furniture were multi-functional: the table lifts to expose the loom. Eight handsome Windsor chairs make this the perfect Thanksgiving table. And nearby, an unusual Windsor candle stand flanks a handsome tall case clock. }}

In the kitchen, vintage tins are displayed in glass-fronted cabinets; the original marble counter more than likely saw plenty of pie and bread dough rolling and candy making in its day. Lisa added a farm sink and a new counter in one area, and the breakfast nook with built-ins remains intact. The original icebox has been cleverly converted into a bar. A portrait of an “instant ancestor” hangs in the hall (Lisa does not know who she was), and a Mammy’s bench in one of the bedrooms is yet another compelling conversation piece. A “faux” fireplace—the vintage mantle and surround was sourced from an old hotel—adds character to Lisa’s home office. The sunniest room in the house is the former master bedroom, which was converted into a den. When the kids come to visit, the basement is a self-contained cave that doubles as a wine cellar. The new owner is taking a break from her former fast-paced life as a marketing and advertising executive for major firms like Pepsi and Colombia Pictures, finding solace in picking up a paintbrush and her stenciling kit as well as offering her design services to others who want to create “warm, homespun, timeless, and comfy” surroundings. “The day escrow closed, I was here with a paintbrush. I did all the painting and stenciling—I find it therapeutic. I turn the music on and go away,” she noted, adding, “I wanted to try something different, that was real and had soul. I can feel the soul here. It felt like coming home.” But getting the house on the Historic Register was something Toland wanted to do for the family. “It was hard for them to give it up,” she says. “I still keep in touch with the owner.” I laugh and remind her that she is the owner. “No,” she replies. “I am the steward.” v To contact Lisa Toland regarding interior design consultation, call 805.857.5500. Toland has collected vintage items for 40 years, focusing mainly on furniture from America’s Colonial period. Here, an antique washstand fills one corner of the kitchen.

CONVERSATION

WILLHOUSE PHOTOGRAPHY Katherine Bell in her mobile boutique.

ROLLING ON A modern entrepreneur’s new direction. BY MARK STORER FOOD ON WHEELS IS NOT A NEW IDEA. SINCE AMERICANS BECAME OBSESSED WITH AUTOMOBILES, THE FOOD vendors were in hot pursuit of their rolling dollars, extolling the virtues of mobile multitasking: a burger in one hand, the other on the wheel. The craze has grown wildly in recent years, with more and more chefs taking the low-overhead route, borrowing a page from the ice cream truck manual and creating haute cuisine atop an American-made chassis. But if food can be on wheels, why not other things? Why not clothes? Why not art? Why not other handcrafted products? Ventura’s Katherine Bell had that very idea and bought a 1977 Grumman Kurbmaster, creating a mobile retail shop that specializes in American-made home décor and clothing items. On a recent winter day, we parked alongside her to find out what’s down the road for The Habitat Factory in 2015. }}

FEBRUARY 2015

WILLHOUSE PHOTOGRAPHY

What kind of merchandise do you peddle? KB: I have a creative side, but I was really focused on the business aspect. I’m a retailer at heart; it’s what I love to do. So I spent time finding great merchandise. Everything is American-made by artisans: ceramic workers, leathersmiths, printmakers. We carry the sort of oneof-a-kind pieces that people want to see in their homes. Where do you find your clientele? KB: Well, I can’t just park the truck anywhere and make it worth my while. So I would create opportunities in the form of maker’s markets or workshops. I’d also partner with likeminded retailers. And we created our own Ventura maker’s market co-op, which was a success. What was your background before you bought the truck? KB: I earned a degree in merchandise marketing from Fashion Institute of Design Management. I did retail and it was second nature to me. Most people don’t like the hours, or they don’t feel appreciated and the rest of it, but I loved selling—and I loved high quality merchandise. As a mom, I couldn’t handle the hours and needed to find something that worked for my family and me. I always knew I’d start my own business, but I never imagined it would be something like this. Moving into 2015, what are some of the changes you have in store? KB: I’ve been sort of messing around with my creative side. I did a bunch of indigo workshops last summer and started experimenting with indigo dyes, and I did some products for a baby shower that really turned out well. A woman I know in Los Angeles, who’s been working in the apparel industry for 20 or 30 years, saw what I was doing and asked me to develop a children’s line for her showrooms. It’s basically an extension of my brand. So I’m taking these American-made products, like leggings and onesies for toddlers and other children’s clothing, and working Shibori (Japanese tie-dying technique dating to the 8th century) patterns and hand dying them with indigo dyes. It’s a whole new phase, and I’m really excited about it. What are some of the challenges you face? KB: I log a lot of miles in the truck. I’ve worked essentially between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and that takes a lot of time. It’s also a challenge for me because, like I said, I’m a retailer at heart, not an artist. I really like the contact with people. Does the business pay for itself? KB: It does, yes. We’ve begun to grow a larger clientele and the truck has really been a springboard. The feedback has been wonderful, and I think people are really intrigued. I have a great merchandise selection. Ultimately, I’d like to have a retail space for Habitat Factory. The mobile aspect has been a great start, and I think the website, too, is a wonderful place for people to go. But I really do like that contact with the customers. I kind of need that. So, like most entrepreneurs, you’re open to change. KB: Yes, it’s not really clear that the truck will be around forever. It’s a very flexible platform and I’ve been really pleased with how it’s gone, but with the focus on the children’s line of apparel, I’m really going in a new direction. I want to stay in Ventura and be here for the future. Where all this will take my business, I have no idea. But I want to keep the same principles I started with: high-quality, handmade, American products. For more information, visit thehabitatfactory.com. Katherine Bell in Ventura.

THE ARTS

THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF.

MICHAEL O’KELLY

One artist’s long, strange trip across the pond. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN

ainter, writer, filmmaker, musician, traveler, collector—artist Michael O’Kelly has packed a lot of pursuits into one lifetime. Perhaps that’s why his ceramic murals are so rich and expressive. Someone who has lived an extraordinary life, full of labyrinthine detours through every creative outlet imaginable, is bound to communicate that in their art. }} 29

FEBRUARY 2015

Take his “History of Ventura” mural that was installed in 2009 at 60 California Street. Yes, it’s created in the California Spanish Revival Style and features the earthy palette reminiscent of the missions, but there’s a level of detail and lavishness that isn’t common with most tile murals. Fluffy clouds; carefully recreated architecture; faces, clothing, and animal life painstakingly illustrated. It’s all very elaborate, like a Renaissance painting. Indeed, O’Kelly’s background (or, rather, one of them) is in painting, and Early and Pre-Renaissance art is one of his greatest influences. But his love of color and ceramics was forged in Latin America. How he got there is a story unto itself. O’Kelly was born in Wales to an Irish father and a Welsh mother. He grew up in Wales and Ireland before the family moved to London when he was 13. O’Kelly was an accomplished musician; his sister, Jane, four years older, was a gifted painter (she would eventually become one of England’s top art restorers). In fact, the O’Kelly clan included artists of all stripes. “It was just like a family curse,” he says with a laugh, gesturing to the numerous family portraits (made by a great uncle), wonderful landscape (an aunt’s), and other paintings made by himself and his beloved sister. His Midtown Ventura studio brims with other delights, too: statues and artifacts from Central and South America, African sculptures, necklaces from Papua New Guinea, a collection of superhero figurines. The space resonates with history and experience, memory and emotion. At age 18, O’Kelly attended the Royal College of Music to study classical guitar, and at one point formed Europe’s first classical guitar quartet. He and Jane, both clever and talented, quickly fell into the “swinging London” art scene. “Nothing was weird in the late sixties in London,” he recalls fondly. Jane became involved with the infamous art forger Thomas Keating in 1963, and O’Kelly would visit them at their 15th-century Tudor home in the country. This creative exposure was transformative. “I’d hang out with my sister and Tom, and they’d teach me how to paint,” he says. “It was an education you just couldn’t get in art school. I was doing music but I didn’t like the lifestyle—we were touring a lot. So in 1973 I decided to quit music and focus on art.” That year O’Kelly went to Mexico on a scholarship to study Pre-Colombian music and dance. He ended up staying for a decade, immersing himself in the culture and the art. “It was a golden age,” he recalls of his travels throughout Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, and the Amazon. “It thrilled and inspired me.” The vibrancy and originality of Latin American art made a powerful impression on the young English painter. “It changed how I saw color,” O’Kelly says. “England has a landscape and watercolor tradition, and the colors are all based on bad weather. In the 1980s it wasn’t easy to unleash color like it was in Latin America and Italy. Living in Latin America made }}

me totally unafraid to use color.” His paintings and murals alike show that influence. Surprisingly, O’Kelly didn’t start working with tile in Central and South America—he drew, painted, did illustrations of art and artifacts (The Encyclopedia of Ancient Civilizations, by Arthur Cotterell, is an excellent example of his early work), and acquired art for the British Museum. But being steeped in the environment planted a seed that would blossom years later. “Ceramics have been a part of Latin American culture since Pre-Colombian times. … You saw tile everywhere. But I never thought about designing at that time. I was influenced subliminally—and when I met Sean, all that experience came rushing back.” That would be Sean McLean, who, along with his brother Desmond, Gisele Tryon-Kelly, and O’Kelly, opened California Pottery and Tile Works in 1994. It has grown to become one of the largest and most pioneering tile companies in the United States, equally lauded for avant-garde designs and faithful reproduction work. The company’s renovations can be seen at the Star Lounge and Watermark Restaurant, both in downtown Ventura, where CPTW’s ability to recreate the original facade has restored these buildings to their former glory. But it’s CPTW’s custom tile work that has benefited most from O’Kelly’s painterly vision. An O’Kelly mural might be roughly summed up as a Renaissance masterpiece transferred to ceramic, with a Latin American sophistication and a touch of quirkiness that stems from O’Kelly’s far-flung inspirations. His most recent creation appears on the hillside villa of philanthropists Doug Halter and Randy Encinas. “They’re some of the most high-profile patrons of the arts, so it’s an homage to their work,” O’Kelly explains. The Rubicon Theater (which they helped found), native plants (the couple are major supporters of the Ventura Botanical Gardens), City Hall, the mission, and other local motifs appear in recognition of their efforts to serve the community. These pieces of “public-private art” are just one example of O’Kelly’s enormous oeuvre, but more than anything else, they showcase how art, architecture, and artisanship can come together in beautiful harmony. “Paintings are wonderful,” the artist says, “but so fragile. Ceramic art and tile—architecture—are built to last. It’s a thrill.” v

THE SWEETEST SONG

IN VENTURA, FINE ART LEADS TO TIMELESS LOVE FOR A PAIR OF UNCOMMON COMPANIONS. BY TREE BERNSTEIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARIANA SCHULZE GARY AND BETSY QUINN SCOFIELD HAVE A LOT IN COMMON. They both retired from long careers teaching in public schools, both lost their spouses around the same time. Yet, both were happily reconciled to devoting the final quarter of their lives to enjoying their grandchildren and puttering in their respective gardens. Neither had any intention of looking for another marriage. }}

Fate brought the two independent artists together at a banquet, which turned out to be an auspicious sign for the feast that has defined their marriage these past two years. “It truly is amazing,” says Gary, looking fondly at his wife across the table at Café Fiore in Ventura. He starts the sentence then looks to his wife for her nod. “We have the same interests in art, music, cooking, gardening, and literature. Everything, actually,” confirms Betsy. “It is remarkable, at our age (she is 78, he is 82), to find someone who is so compatible,” says Gary, as he gives Betsy’s hand a little squeeze. Early in their courtship, Gary brought her a bouquet of flowers from his garden. Delighted, she asked if she could thank him with a kiss. “Good Lord, no!” he exclaimed. (It was his old conservative upbringing, he concedes.) But he quickly changed his mind, and Betsy planted a chaste kiss on his cheek. Their mutual appreciation for art and interest in sketching led to art dates and, yes, long walks on the beach. Gary, who spontaneously recites passages of poetry, found Betsy to be an appreciative audience. From “Love Song,” by Rainer Maria Rilke: Upon which instrument are we two spanned And what musician holds us in his hand? Oh sweetest song. Although neither are novices to art, it was not a career path. Gary is also a fine woodcarver and has carved wooden animals for his grandchildren’s birthdays for the past 26 years. Although he always loved drawing, his teaching career took precedent, and he did not pursue art wholeheartedly until he retired. He taught fourth and fifth grade at both Summit and Somis elementary schools. Betsy, who taught English and ESL at Ventura High for over 25, found her journey as an artist had a similar trajectory. “I give 100 percent to where my attention is focused,” she says. “Teaching and raising a family filled my life. When I retired, I realized I needed to learn to draw properly if I was going to paint, so I took classes with Beverly Decker and Hiroko Yoshimoto, and other masterful teachers at Ventura College.” She is also a printmaker and member of the Inkspots printer’s collective. Betsy has traveled a fair amount. “I’ve always loved looking at art, but never thought I could be an artist,” she says. She speaks French and Italian, and has taken groups of artists on sketching tours to Europe. She introduced Gary to the pleasure of seeing France and Italy from outdoor cafés, sketchbooks in hand. They both draw with a .005 Pigma Micron pen (the thinnest line) then fill in with watercolor. They carry the compact Windsor Newton watercolor travel box, which comes with a telescoping sable brush. 36

FEBRUARY 2015

Sometimes they’ll finish a sketch and paint in situ, or save the coloring for later. For their honeymoon in 2013, they sketched their way around France for three weeks. In the summer of 2014, they traveled to Greece and Italy, painting the countryside, and finding a watercolorist’s dream come true in Venice—the City of Love. Gardening and cooking are other passions. “We sing when we cook,” says Gary with a grin. They have a poster in their kitchen that reads: Make salad the main course! Which no doubt helps fuel their robust energy and absolute delight in the ordinary miracles of everyday life. That delight finds its way into their sketchbook collaborations, some paperback book-sized, others small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. These little color Xeroxed books are memory maps of where they’ve been, often embellished with scraps of poetry they memorize and recite, such as these lines from “To John Ashbery,” by Frank O’Hara: I can’t believe there’s not Another world where we will sit And read new poems to each other High on a mountain in the wind Much of their Ventura art features local café society or their own garden—with lots of heirloom tomatoes. In fact, their tomato harvest has become an annual event they call Tomatomania, inviting family, friends, and neighbors to enjoy their bounty with a big picnic. Of course, invitations to the party are beautifully illustrated. Gary’s artistic eye often fastens on architecture, such as his view of St. Mark’s across the channel, or a detail of wrought iron archway. Perhaps because he is also a woodcarver his perspective and sense of volume is confident and appreciative, like he’s saying to the viewer, “Take a look at this!” Betsy displays a bit more whimsy and wiggle; she’s obviously in love with bold color. (She also draws insightful cartoons, such as Gary with a big patchwork Bag-o-Guilt. But that’s another story.) Her artistic view usually includes evidence of the pleasure of company, such as a glass of wine on a table or a tangle of garden flowers, a golden sprit aloft. Both artists are so playful, one sometimes cannot tell them apart. “That happened the other day,” confirms Betsy. “We were looking at some recent sketches and saying, ‘Did you do this, or did I?’” They complement each other’s work, each appreciative of the others’ skill. She admires his sense of perspective. He praises her intuitive color. “We love painting together,” says Gary. “I don’t like painting by myself anymore,” adds Betsy, who prefers painting en plein air. “We give each other energy.” Gary’s New Year’s resolution is to complete a painting a day. It looks like Betsy will be right there in the picture with him. v

Traveling with compact watercolor boxes, telescoping sable brushes, and archival quality micro-thin pens, the couple has documented their travels through romatic locales like France, Italy, and Greece.

SHORT LIST FINE PORTRAITS, FINE PEOPLE

Through March 29 | Ojai Valley Museum This original art exhibit features portraits of intriguing individuals who have influenced life in the Ojai Valley. Included are fine art portraits of educators, movie stars, philanthropists, artists, ranchers, and writers. “Topography/Cartography of the Ojai Valley,” a mini-science exhibit, will run concurrently and let the viewer explore the valley’s geography via a three-dimensional topographical map. The art of cartography (mapmaking) will also be featured. 130 W. Ojai Ave., Ojai. For more information, visit ojaivalleymuseum.org.

THE OIL PAINTINGS OF RICHARD SCHLOSS

Through March 22 | Museum of Ventura County The oil paintings of Richard Schloss are a testament to the beauty of the land and sea that surrounds us. His dramatic treatment of light creates and captures a moment in time that evokes memories of an unspoiled California. Richard lived and painted in the Santa Barbara area for many years, and became part of a movement of landscape painters known as the Oak Group, which was committed to preserving open spaces by bringing public awareness to preservation efforts in areas throughout California. 100 E. Main St., Ventura. For more information, visit venturamuseum.org.

PARALLEL REALITIES

Through February 22 | galerie102, Ojai galerie102 will present Parallel Realities, featuring photographer Ricardo Rodriguez, former curator of Ventura’s Bell Arts Factory’s Tool Room Gallery, and Ventura-based mixed-media and ceramicist Janet Neuwalder. In Parallel Realities, Rodriguez and Neuwalder collaborate on new work that plays off each other’s art. Though some consider photography and ceramics very different and separate mediums, in this installation they work together to celebrate the origination of each element: earth and paper. 102 W. Matilija St. Ojai. For more information, visit galerie102.com.

MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS

Through February 22 | Skyway Playhouse, Camarillo In this play, legendary film producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, “Gone With the Wind.” The screenplay just doesn’t work. So what’s an all-powerful movie mogul to do? He calls director Victor Fleming from the set of “The Wizard of Oz” and taps legendary screenwriter and “script doctor” Ben Hecht to rewrite the script. There is only one problem: Hecht hasn’t read the book. Selznick locks the doors and pulls down the shades, and on a diet of bananas and peanuts the three men, assisted by Selznick’s assistant, Miss Poppenghul, spend the next five days acting out and fashioning a screenplay that will become the blueprint for one of the most beloved films of all time. 330 Skyway Dr., Camarillo. For more information, visit skywayplayhouse.org.

MONUMENTUM + SUSTAIN

Through February 22 | Carnegie Art Museum, Oxnard The Ramon Ramirez exhibit “Monumentum” captures unofficial monuments through reconnaissance of the urban environment of Los Angeles. In “Sustain,” Ventura-based artist Terry Arena’s drawings and installations show the quietly intense renderings of the environmental vulnerability of our food sources. 424 S. C St., Oxnard. For more information, visit carnegieam.org.

STOMP

THROUGH MARCH 29

OJAI VALLEY MUSEUM

February 11 & 12 | Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza

From its beginnings as a street performance in the UK, STOMP has grown into an international sensation. Created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, STOMP continues its phenomenal run with four global productions: the ongoing sell-out production at New York’s Orpheum Theatre, a permanent London company, and North American and European tours. Tickets $64 or $54. 7:30 p.m. 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., T.O. For more information, visit civicartsplaza. com.

PACIFIC MAMBO ORCHESTRA February 14 | Majestic Ventura Theater

2014 Grammy winner the Pacific Mambo Orchestra (a.k.a. the PMO) is a 20-piece, San Francisco-based musical group leading the rebirth of the Latin Big band Sound. The PMO uses the traditions of the classic mambo-craze orchestras of the 1950s to deliver their original music and clever, modern arrangements of hit songs. Currently the only fully active Latin Big Band on the West Coast, this elite group of the Bay Area’s finest musicians performs in both English and Spanish (French and Portuguese selections are also available). $25 to $50. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m. 26 S. Chestnut St., Ventura. For more information, visit venturatheater.net.

CARNEGIE ART MUSEUM

THE LAST FIVE YEARS

Through February 15 | Rubicon Theatre, Ventura

Winner of the New York Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, “The Last Five Years” is a funny, honest, and intimate pop musical about two 20-something New Yorkers who meet, fall in love, and try to hold on to each other when life leads them in different directions. Jamie, a rising novelist, tells their story from the beginning, while Cathy, a struggling actress, begins at the end of their five-year journey. Emotionally powerful, with an exuberant musical score. 1006 E. Main St., Ventura. For more information, visit rubicontheatre.org.

ON THE HORIZON

WILD & SCENIC FILM FESTIVAL

March 13 & 14 | Poinsettia Pavilion, Ventura

The Ventura Hillsides Conservancy will present 20 short subject films featuring outdoor adventure and environmental topics. In addition to cinema, the event will feature live music, local craft beer, raffles, and speakers. The Wild & Scenic Film Festival doubles as the Venturabased land trust’s annual membership drive. Festivalgoers who join the Conservancy with a minimum $35 membership receive two general admission tickets. A $50 or greater membership yields four tickets. Returning in 2015 will be the popular Silver Circle program, which features reserved preferred seating, a beverage, and concierge service for a $25 ticket price. 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. General admission $10 per night. 3451 Foothill Rd., Ventura. For more information, visit venturahillsides.org.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING

March 13 – April 12 | Conejo Players Theatre, Thousand Oaks

Power, ambition, greed ... just another day at the office. From the authors of “Guys and Dolls” comes one of the most delightfully irreverent musicals of all time. J. Pierrepont Finch uses a little “how-to” handbook to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive, tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant “company man”; the office party; backstabbing co-workers; caffeine addiction; and, of course, true love. Winner of the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this delightful musical melds wit, comedy, and romance together to hilarious perfection. Rated PG-13. 351 S. Moorpark Rd., Thousand Oaks.
