Here’s what makes Peripheral Neuropathy so dangerous!

Unlike other disease, Peripheral Neuropathy is a condition that slowly eats away at you…quietly, like a thief in the night. Like the angry spouse in the detective stories who slowly poisons the other spouse with arsenic. It is just like that poison (especially with diabetes), doing its damage to nerves slowly.

So slowly, that at first, when it’s already done some damage, you won’t even notice it. As

time progresses, you’ll begin to experience some frequent and repeating symptoms. As it gets worse, many people feel an awful, painful sensation in their legs and feet all the time as though they are wearing a stocking on their feet when they are not, all day and night.

Most forms of chronic Peripheral Neuropathies are degenerative and progressive. In other words, if left untreated, they will likely get worse over time.

Cara Mia opened in Ventura 16 years ago with the mission of providing the public with raw, natural, and all-over-good-for-you skin care and makeup products.

Kezia Edwards, who has been in the beauty industry for 13 years, took over ownership of Cara Mia six years ago.

“I didn’t come up with the idea; I’ve just been continuing to expand upon it,” Edwards said.

“Not only is it a company that I own and work for, but I really believe in everything and I’m comfortable suggesting it to others because it’s so great.”

Cara Mia offers custom-blended makeup and skin-care products that are not only beautifully functional, but that are suited to nearly every individual skin sensitivity out there.

Most customers at Cara Mia arrive at the shop in desperation. They have tried everything, and nothing has worked to heal or cooperate with their breakout-prone, sensitive skin. To get to the bottom of what may be causing these various sensitivities and acne rampages, Edwards and her team ask each customer to complete a surprisingly thorough questionnaire that covers nearly every habit a customer owns, from what they eat to how often they change their pillow cases.

“Our products are hypo-allergenic, gluten-free, fragrance-free, free of bismuth oxychloride (a filler in most mineral makeups and a major skin irritant) and are all-natural,” Edwards said. She added,“We really care about what we eat, but then a lot of people don’t think about ‘What am I putting on my face?’ We don’t have all these horrible ingredients that people are putting on their bodies.”

Although certain products at Cara Mia may at first appear a bit pricey, Edwards and her clearskinned, happy customers will assure you that the products are well-worth the money.

“We could save money [and buy cheaper products], but our customers would notice the difference, and I would notice a difference.”

The process of learning the craft was a journey inspired by something simple and necessary. Her favorite soap maker had closed down shop, and Violet was now without the soap she had come to love.

Violet, whose wide and youthful smile hides the fact that she has 70 years under her belt, spent six months working to find her perfect recipe.

“I just started reading and experimenting and developed my own,” Cohen said. “I’ve always been fascinated by soap, and I just think it’s such a simple pleasure. It’s so sensual; and for such a small thing, it just gives you so much.”

Cohen’s soaps are a delicacy. They are ripe with essential oils and moisturizing ingredients, with touches of flowers and other dry ingredients, like curry powder, that you can see on the soap itself.

Soap making is a long and intensive process. Cohen and her grandson, Red Hawk, make soap together twice a week, spending approximately six and a half hours for the batch of 128 bars of soap that they make on each of those two days.

“When I started, it was just a joy to make; and after all this time, I’m still enjoying it,” Cohen said, despite the hard work involved in making it.“I haven’t really grown tired of it. It’s just such a sweet thing to give to people as a gift.”

Michelle Stevens, owner of the Refill Shop, is helping Ventura reduce its share of the 2.5 million plastic bottles Americans throw away per year.

A Libra, for example, has two soaps. The first, for the artistic Libra, touts coriander, ginger, spearmint and orange as its ingredients. The more natural Libra, on the other hand, has a soap made of sage, among other smell-good ingredients.

Over the years, Cohen has acquired the ability to match a person perfectly to a bar of soap. She uses the person’s astrological sign, gender, hair color and overall personality as gauges.

“The blonde woman will come in and invariably choose this soap,” she said, referencing the lemon-lemongrass bar. “People are kind of amazed that I can do that; and oftentimes, it’s right on.

Somehow, over the years, I’ve just been able to do it. It takes time and space to acquire some of these skills.”

More recently, Cohen has begun to create a body cream and essential oil sprays, such as a mix of cedar wood, patchouli and lavender. All of her products are preservative-free and all-natural, so they are, doubtless, good for your skin.

“Soap offers so much conversation and communication,” Cohen said.

One woman, Michelle Stevens, has set out to help Ventura reduce its share of that plastic waste. In 2010, she opened The Refill Shoppe; a little store located next to the Rubicon Theatre on

“I didn’t know when I opened it [if the concept would work],” Stevens said.

The concept the business runs on is simple: Buy a quality product in a strong glass or aluminum container and then bring the container back, once the product has run out, and refill the original container.

After nearly two and a half years in business and a location change to downtown Main Street, the concept that The Refill Shoppe was founded on has proved itself highly successful. By Dec. 31, the Shoppe had refilled exactly 5,000 bottles; and that’s strictly second-use.

But what about the products that go into these bottles?

“Our goal for our products is to be a balance between more natural but still functioning really well,” Stevens said. “I’ve learned a lot and have come to appreciate really quality ingredients. My goal was to play to the middle-of-the-road crowd. I want a better shampoo, but I want it to function like shampoo and be enjoyable to use. We’re for people who still want to use their things, but we offer a fun alternative.”

Every ingredient, along with the percentage of organic product, in each liquid product sold in The Refill Shoppe is listed on the shop’s website, so customers can be sure of what it is that they are purchasing and using on their bodies and in their homes. All of the liquid refill products, including shampoo, conditioner, body and hand soap, detergent and hair products, are made in-house.

Perhaps one of the most fun aspects for customers of The Refill Shoppe is that products may be scented to the consumer’s liking. The Refill Shoppe has approximately 57 essential oils and 55 fragrances to choose from that may be mixed into products. For the customer with sensitivities to fragrances and essential oils, however, there is always available the option to go unscented.

“I think it’s important to just enjoy life and to take a look at what you’re using and just to think if maybe there’s an easy switch. It’s just little changes at a time and figuring out what you can do that works for you,” said Stevens. Her shop offers“just little things that can really start to eliminate a significant amount of waste.”

The Channel Islands provides idyllic scenery for stand up paddling.

Take it outside Get a full workout in Ventura County story and photos by Chuck Graham The backcountry trail was crusted in a thin layer of frost, my lungs burning while trail-running up steep, chaparral-choked switchbacks. Eight miles into my early morning workout, I made a pit stop beneath the canopy of a California bay tree. A long, smooth limb served as a convenient pull-up bar, a sandstone boulder a perfect spot for some incline push-ups. After several sets of each, I continued on my trail run, increasing my mileage and reveling in the backcountry solitude.

I used to be a devoted gym rat, jumping from the treadmill to the free weights and the Stairmaster five days a week, religiously. Several years ago I kissed my gym membership goodbye, switched gears and now spend 80 percent to 90 percent of my workouts outside, in the front- and backcountry, at the beach, the Channel Islands, anywhere but the sterility of the gym. Don’t get me wrong, gyms certainly serve their purpose, especially for those on time constraints. But there’s nothing like running a trail bypassing a herd of

mule deer while sucking in the scent of sage. Instead of an exercise bike, it’s a mountain bike. I traded in the rowing machine for a kayak. Instead of an exercise ball, I benefit from the low-impact workout of a standup paddleboard, a fine vantage point once dolphins join the fray.

Because Ventura County is so diversified, with the mountains and Los Padres National Forest in such close proximity to the coast and the Channel Islands National Park, anyone can break out of the normal gym routine and discover the wilderness, at least as a cool alternative to working out at the gym.

Here are three possibilities to expand your horizons and sneak you away from the gym.

Utilize Santa Cruz Island as a base for multiple workouts. Camp for two nights at Scorpion Anchorage and between trail runs or easy hikes linking Montanon Ridge to Smugglers Cove, kayak west to Potato Harbor for a six-mile round-trip paddle along sheer cliffs honeycombed in craggy sea grottos.

You can take lessons from an experienced guide or rent a sit-on-top kayak or standup paddleboard and paddle on your own out toward the harbor entrance easily cruising by playful sea lions and dive-bombing pelicans. HEALTH OR HYPE? The pros and cons of detox diets

BY CARLA IACOVETTI WriterAtTheSea@gmail.com With the desire for a healthier lifestyle, it is easy to understand why detox diets have been on the rise over the last several years, especially when some of the claimed benefits include eliminating harmful toxins, boosting energy levels, weight loss, improving physical fitness, enhancing mental clarity, improving skin and promoting youthfulness. There are a plethora of detox diets out there, all promising similar results.

Detoxing the body is not something that suddenly became popular with Oprah or other healthconscious celebrities. It goes all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Basically, detoxification is the removal of both dietary and environmental toxins found in the foods we ingest and in the air we breathe.

According to Dr. Oz, the three critical organs involved in a detox are the kidney, the colon and the liver.

Here in Ventura, Ema Omanovic Salmon, owner of Ema’s Herbs, has been encouraging detoxification for 23 years.
