hile cardio workouts like running and circuit training increase the strength of your heart and lungs, power lifting involves lifting as much weight as possible in one repetition, which increases your strength and bone mass. “It also helps you burn fat by building muscle — every pound of muscle one puts on burns 50 calories at rest,” said Nikki Lian, a certified personal trainer and owner of CKO Kickboxing in Simi Valley. Power lifting exercises include the squat, dead lift and bench press. Power lifting and cardio exercises focus on different aspects of physical fitness, said Steven Hawkins, professor of exercise science at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Power lifting stimulates the musculoskeletal system, improving the strength of muscles and bones, while cardio stimulates the cardiovascular system, improving endurance, he explained. “Power lifting stimulates muscles and bones to get stronger,” Hawkins said. It works by stimulating the nervous system to better activate muscles, and to increase the amount of muscle. “These adaptations lead to increased muscle strength,” Hawkins said. “In addition, the muscle will get faster because of transitions in several proteins in the muscle towards faster isoforms. Bones respond to the increased strain by increasing bone mass.” Cardio training, on the other hand, has limited capacity for stimulating muscle and bone to get stronger, with the exception of those who are significantly untrained, he noted. “Cardiovascular fitness is still considered the most important fitness parameter, due to its strong association with reduction in cardiovascular disease risk,” Hawkins said. “But it is possible to improve cardiovascular fitness even with power lifting as the primary focus of training.” Continued on page 8

Power lifting, per se, is not an effective stimulus for cardiovascular fitness, so this would require additional workouts stimulating the cardiovascular system, Hawkins advised. He recommends “continuous activity at vigorous intensity” from three to five times a week, 20 to 60 minutes each session. He added that one of the biggest myths about power lifting is that it will increase muscle mass significantly, “which for most people isn’t true. The primary focus of power lifting is strength development.” Power lifting is considered ideal for someone who doesn’t want to gain a lot of size but, rather, strength, Lian said. “Any workout you do is a preference, but you should always try to get in both strength training and cardio as well,” she recommended. “You can have a body builder, power lifter or someone who loves to weight train that is very strong and powerful, but they have trouble breathing going up one flight of stairs,” Lian said. “Then you can have someone who runs on the treadmill all the time and has great cardio, but no muscle mass. So strength training and cardio go hand in hand.” Make sure that whatever exercise or sport you want to get into, seek professional guidance, not just YouTube videos, Lian further advised. “Especially in power lifting, you can hurt yourself very quickly if you don’t have the proper technique and form.” fhb

Ventura. Owner Alfredo Acle, 37, took a personal interest in cryotherapy when doctors were unable to treat his chronic back pain after seven years of trying to diagnose the problem. An avid swimmer for years, having won a swimming scholarship for college, he believes that may have been the source. “I was only able to walk on and off and it was pretty bad. Basically when I was diagnosed, I had surgery at CMH. There are different types of lasers that vary the depth of peel, said Dr. Yuly Gorodisky, owner of the West Coast Plastic Surgery Center in Oxnard who is board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. “The deeper the peel, the longer it takes for the patient to recover, but they will usually get more significant results,” Gorodisky explained. Some laser peels are performed in a “fractional” way, “meaning, the laser beam is split into dots of light that peel tiny areas of skin and thereby speed up the recovery,” he said. “As the skin heals, new skin cells create a smoother more even skin.” Several benefits can result. Laser peels help to improve skin texture, skin laxity and skin discoloration — and help refresh the skin by removing dead skin layers and stimulating collagen production that accompanies the healing process after the treatment, Gorodisky explained. “More aggressive and deeper laser peels may be done only once or every few years,” he said. “More mild treatments and fractional treatments are done every few weeks or months. The less aggressive treatments usually require more sessions to achieve better results.” Gorodisky, who offers laser peels at his Oxnard center, is among several local practitioners and centers that offer this treatment. Others include Dr. Lynn Jeffers, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Oxnard; Laser Beautification Center in Ventura; La Nouvelle Medical Spa in Oxnard; Pickart Plastic Surgery in Ventura; Coastal Dermatology Medical and Cosmetic Center in Camarillo; and Dr. Michael Morrissette in Ventura. To maximize results, it’s important for patients to understand the aftercare and follow the instructions carefully. “The most common side effect is poor healing and infection,” Gorodisky said. “This may turn a great result into an unsightly scar.
