N New Age
The original idea for our Januar y 2009 cover story was to profile five people under the age of 35. Five young up-and-comers moving Ventura County forward in the New Year. Then Adina Nack (cover and p. 31) went and turned 36. But since she personifies the idea, we forgave her utter disregard for our editorial plan and nixed the age barrier, loosening the restriction to a supremely vague “young.” Without the 35-year-old age limit, the number five became irrelevant. Nine was an obvious choice, considering the year. And it is a nice number—the highest single-number digit in the decimal system. “Nine for 2009” (p. 30) also gave us an opportunity to include four more people, which went ever so slightly in the direction of solving the eternal dilemma of all magazines: who and what to cover. Inevitably, we will miss some great subjects, but we’re always open to your suggestions. Frequently, suggestions come from self-promoters. And there’s nothing wrong with that per se. Savvy businesspeople understand the value of local publications and reach out, looking to spread the word in the community. If there’s a
story for our readers within their pitch, we’ll consider it; otherwise we direct them to the advertising department. The story about Community Supported Agriculture (p. 13) was not suggested at all. Ever since my wife and I picked up our first tote of veggies I’ve raved about the program. But here’s a tip: If you’re just looking for cheap organic produce, don’t bother. Some weeks it’s a bargain; other weeks you’d be better off, financially speaking, at Farmers Market. And you don’t get to pick and choose like you would there. If critters got to the lettuce that week, you’re eating cabbage salad. Or no salad at all. Which is exactly the point: vegetables should be subject to the whims of nature. CSA isn’t strictly about food; it’s also about education and awareness. When our little girl is old enough to understand she’ll be volunteering on the farm, happily digging in the dirt. Kids reintroduce us to good things we’d been skipping over in our adult haste (like digging in the dirt). Call it the subtle wisdom of simplicity. Which isn’t to say we don’t need a break from them at times—that’s the obvious wisdom of the tired parent. Rebecca Reindl, a mother of two (and a savvy businessperson), understands that need and opened a business catering to parents and children alike. At Imagine That! (p. 23), kids squirrel about while moms lounge on comfy couches, coffee in hand, enjoying a temporary respite from the storm of adolescence. There’s even a room for spa treatments. For mom, of course. The kids couldn’t care less. Then again, in times like these we could all use a massage. Happy 2009, and thanks again for your readership. This year, the event raised $50,000 for faculty grants that will benefit CLU’s academic programs as well as $9,000 that will enable 20 CLU students to travel to Biloxi, MS to help victims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild their homes. The evening’s festivities peaked during the live auction when “ Kingsmen Creek,” an original oil painting by CLU alumnus Michael Lynn Adams, sparked a heated bidding war. Other popular auction items included a luxur y suite for a Kings or Clippers game and a four-night stay at a resort in Los Cabos, Mexico. The evening included cocktails, a silent auction, live jazz music, and a dinner featuring a cleverly prepared Peruvian purple and Yu kon gold potato salad. Apparently, 2009 will be arriving with some baggage—and we’re not talking Louis Vuitton. With the economy stalking us, we could all use some help to get through the tough times. Books are always a great distraction, but they can also educate, alleviating stress of the unknown and empowering us when life cracks open a can of worms. Independent bookstore owner Clarey Rudd (Bank of Books and Abednego Book Shoppe) has seen an increase in sales of used books about economic events like the Great Depression,as well as key players such as Franklin D.Roosevelt.Cognizant of the old adage “history repeats itself,” people are striving to make sense of the current economic climate. But if you are like me, you can only take on harsh realities for so long before feeling the weight of the world. So here are some (very affordable) books to educate and invigorate, perhaps even heal, as together we move into 2009. Community support of local farmers is nothing new—which isn’t to say the idea can’t be expanded in 2009. At The Farmer and The Cook, Steve Sprinkel (farmer) and his wife, Olivia Chase (cook), return the favor, providing a hands-on education in progressive agriculture and healthy cuisine.
BY MATT KETTMANN PHOTOS BY GARY AND PIERRE SILVA
T
The Farmer and the Cook instantly charms food lovers. Shelves at the Ojai Valley market and restaurant overflow every season with a staggering variety of organic produce grown on nearby farms; the café offers up eclectic teas, fair trade coffees, tasty baked treats, gourmet vegetarian Mexican food, popular pizzas, and music on the weekends; and the smiling staff seems genuinely stoked to be there, exuding a youthful energy while happily helping their dedicated customers. And that’s not even mentioning the charismatic allure of owners Steve Sprinkel and Olivia Chase, the husband/farmer-and-wife/cook duo with decades of experience in progressive agriculture and healthy cuisine. It’s a wonder, then, that so many people are lining up to be part of something that will actually cut down the time they spend shopping and eating in the market. But that’s the promise of The Farmer and the Cook’s two-year-old Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, in which subscribers pay 100 dollars a month to take home a hand-picked box of organic, sustainably grown fruits, veggies, and herbs every week. Accompanied by “The Forager”— Sprinkel’s whimsical-yet-wise newsletter prescribing proper produce preparations, suggesting recipes to get you through the week, relaying true farm tales, and spreading gossip about the store’s employees and customers—the CSA amounts to one-stop grocery shopping, your weekly needs completed in a two-minute pick-up. Although it’s just one of a couple similar programs available to residents in Ventura County, The Farmer and the Cook’s CSA subscribers are part of a growing movement across the country of people who want to reconnect with agriculture in a meaningful way and learn a little bit about farming, cooking, and staying healthy in the process. “The CSA movement is off the hinges,” said Sprinkel on a recent foggy afternoon as he sipped chai in his café and personally doled out bonus watermelons to the patrons who came to pick up their weekly red-andwhite produce crate, an activity that occurs every Wednesday and Thursday in the market. Sprinkel, who is 58, has salt-and-pepper hair, and dresses in the casual utilitarian style that a hippie-farmer should, happily puts fresh food on the table of his 60 subscribers in the Ojai Valley, and knows that he could do even more. “We have a significant waiting list,” explained Sprinkel, who is JANUARY 2009

also hoping to soon launch a new CSA program—in partnership with the folks at Patagonia—for the city-dwellers of Ventura. While the desire in Ventura County for this service is relatively recent, the idea of communities supporting local, sustainablyminded farmers is nothing new to the Los Angeles native, who jumped into the “backto-land” and organic food movement as a UCSB student in the late 1960s. After graduation, he farmed in Goleta and Carpinteria and even lived on a commune in Mendocino. While managing these farms and orchards, Sprinkel explained, “We experienced what happened to many people in the organic farm movement: the gardens get out of hand.” That meant they had produce to share, trade, and sell. That trajectory spawned the modern organic and slow food movements, which are only now starting to truly blossom in the mainstream American culture. “Localism?” Sprinkel asked with a grin. “We’ve been doing that for decades. We’ve had these pretensions for 40 years.” As he and other likeminded farmers evolved over the years—many make their livings selling at farmers’ markets around the country or by supplying gourmet grocers and restaurants—they’ve managed to keep their energetic, exploratory spirits. “We’re still in pioneer mode,” he said. The subscribers, it seems, are this next wave of pioneers, for every week is an adventure. In the winter, your box could include beets, arugula, endives, chard, and spearmint; in the spring, perhaps some French breakfast radishes and rainbow Swiss chard. In the summer, you might be juggling hot peppers, squash, kale, chamomile, and tomatoes. And in the fall, maybe some sunflowers, Lebanese squash, and collard greens. Throughout the year, Sprinkel tries to throw some culinary curveballs, spices such as epazote and veggies like kohlrabi that you may have never heard of. On top of all this, subscribers are encouraged to volunteer on the farms, which are also the site of many potluck parties. So it’s not just healthy food and supporting your neighborhood farmer—it’s about building a better community and providing hands-on education for the whole family. Sprinkel, who hurried off to pick the next round of hot peppers after finishing his chai, is more than happy to provide. v

Modern inspiration in the cradle of civilization
WORDS AND PHOTOS (UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED) BY MARY SEQUOIA HAMILTON Recently, my 11-year-old son, Sky, has been studying about ancient Egypt in the classroom—and at home. We’ve mummified Power Rangers tightly wrapped in toilet tissue (embedded with costume jewelry to simulate amulets and drenched in perfume-scented oils), ceremoniously placed them in decorated shoebox coffins, and buried them in the backyard. We’ve TiVo’d dozens of History Channel programs pondering intriguing mysteries: Did Cleopatra commit suicide, or was she murdered? How is a pyramid built? Did the ancient Egyptians really know the cure for baldness and migraines? We’ve written our names in Egyptian hieroglyphs, and in his sixth grade class at Krishnamurti’s Oak Grove School in Ojai, we explored myths surrounding the symbols in a person’s name. (If your name has an M, represented by an owl, legend has it that you possess innate wisdom; R is the symbol of a mouth and refers to those who appreciate good conversation and food.) We even constructed a model pyramid out of marshmallows and hot glue—and had a modern mess when we forgot to unplug the hot glue gun. Fascination with Egypt can start young and can last a lifetime, as there's no other place in the world that holds more mystery and allure. When media magnate William Randolph Hearst was 10 years old, his mother took him on a world tour of Europe and Egypt, where he gathered ideas from the grandeur and scale of castles, temples, art, and history. fact, Hearst was so enthralled with Egypt that he returned again, at the age of 29, on what a colleague described as a “photographic orgy,” returning to the U.S. with 3,200 images, as well as art, antiquities, and a collection of mummies. Travel writer Amelia Edwards, who penned “A Thousand Miles up the Nile” in the late 1800s, described the ancient land of mysteries as a place “of which no writing and no art can convey more than a dwarfed and pallid impression." Bottom line: You have to visit Egypt for yourself. Apparently, about 11 million people did just that last year, swelling Egypt’s tourism up 22 percent from 2007 and up 300 percent from a decade ago. Egypt’s tourism office forecasts that by 2011 they’ll need to construct 2,500 new hotels just to accommodate the global guests. It’s no wonder, since Egypt is crowning “Top Destinations” lists and ranks with the best of the best in books like “100 Places to See Before You Die.” (Ironically, the co-author of that bestseller died this year at 47, having visited only half of the destinations on his list.) Like many travelers, visiting the Great Pyramid has been at the top of my bucket list. I’ve led trips around the globe—sings sings in Papua New Guinea, art tours in Florence, treks in Nepal—and even did a seasonal stint as a Yosemite Park Ranger, leading guided hikes into the wilderness. Now, Egypt was calling. And it was calling Downtown Ventura merchants

We climbed up camels and down steep cavernous tombs. We prayed between the paws of the Sphinx and hiked into the heart of the Great Pyramid.
Keith and Francesca Richardson, the owners of the angel store Things From Heaven, too. When we discovered our mutual travel interests, we decided to form a tour group and invite others to join us. So with my husband’s assurance that he would hold down the Ojai fort and keep our son focused on his Egyptian studies and crafts, I traveled to Cairo in preparation for leading two tours there in April 2009: an adventure for families (including my own) and a “Sacred Travels” tour for adults. Serendipitously, through a mutual friend and via Skype, I was introduced to Jacqueline Muller, who came highly recommended for her creative, soulful tours called Sacred World Journeys. As a fellow tour organizer, Muller appeared to be the ideal mentor for my upcoming custom tours to the cradle of civilization. A local Egyptian tour company, who also would be assisting me in spring, brought Muller’s grand itinerary to life with all kinds of special visits, payoffs, and treats that only locals could arrange. For seven days, our small group was immersed in authentic Egyptian cultures and customs. We dined in tucked-away family restaurants and savored new concoctions like squeezed lime juice with fresh mint leaves (add sugar and it’s like drinking a slice of key lime pie). We drifted down the Nile on a traditional felucca and sailed the skies in a hot air balloon. We climbed up camels and down steep cavernous tombs. We meditated in silence and partied together at the pool’s swim-up bar. We prayed between the paws of the Sphinx and hiked into the heart of the Great Pyramid. Withstanding the sands of time, Kemet (the original name for Egypt, from ancient records) kept true to its meaning—the land of magic— and I couldn’t wait to return with my own magical, mysterious tours. Then a proverbial light bulb went off, in the form of that classic Beatles song: “The magical mystery tour is waiting to take you away. Waiting to take you away…” Inspired, I quickly scribbled a postcard to my husband and son: Can’t wait to be here together in April! I’m arranging a Magical, Mystery Tour. xoxo Mom P.S. GIVING BACK
n Owner Rebecca Reindl with a stylish crew of local kids.
Generation Next There’s a new playpen in town—and this one pampers moms as well as kids. Imagine That!
BY DEWITT SMITH PHOTOS BY MICHAEL ROBINSON CHAVEZ
Nature abhors a vacuum, which is how the world has ended up with so many gadgets and services. Somebody figured out that we all needed cell phones, iPods, DVDs and day spas, drive-through coffee joints, things we never thought of. So one day last summer, Rebecca Reindl, a young Ventura mother with two kids, took a look around, saw not only a vacuum—in fact, a gaping hole—and had a brain-popping idea. There was no place in Ventura where she could take her kids for creative playtime with other children. At least no place where moms could get recharged with gourmet coffee or in-house spa treatments while the little ones do their thing. That idea was the birth of Imagine That!—a warm, affordable place for kids to dance ballet or hiphip, learn yoga, or simply play with other kids. And while the children are twirling, hopping, and stretching, mom can sip steaming coffee with other women, surf the Internet, or even pop out to do some errands without a child in tow. Imagine That! opened on East Main Street in September, and the new business has taken off like a textbook success story. Which is exactly what the 20-something Reindl had in mind. Armed with an undergraduate degree in business from the University of British Columbia and an MBA from CLU, not to mention a lot of pluck, she started by writing a 40-page business plan. From there, it was on to the hunt for retail property. She found the right space in early summer. “When I walked into the real estate place, the leaser was reluctant to sign a lease for a start-up business,” she says. “When I showed them my business plan, they must have thought I was nuts.”

Next step was getting an interior designer. The 2,500-square-foot space is warm and comfy, filled with pastel colors and high ceilings. Playthings are everywhere, as are little ballet girls in pouffy tutus over white tights. As I walked in, Reindl was manning the front desk with one-and-a-half-year-old Makayla in one arm and six-year-old Sasha (wearing a tutu) tugging at the other arm. What’s interesting, especially in this struggling economy, is that Reindl didn’t do any marketing; she just went straight ahead and talked up her plan with other young mothers. The moms’ grapevine, after all, is a powerful marketing tool. “I started talking about my place at moms’ groups, and it was really the grapevine,” Reindl says. “Customers were coming in and loved what they saw and starting buying 50 dollar passes.” Yesina Hughes, 35, works as a paramedic in Santa Barbara and teaches in the emergency medical technician program at SB City College. Fouryear-old Haydn is her only child. “We’re always looking for things for her,” says Hughes. “Haydn is in pre-school two days a week, and every day we want to have a fun outlet. So when a girlfriend from my gym talked about this place, I agreed to meet her here.” Hughes clearly liked what she saw: “It looked very clean. She’s got good structure going on, and Haydn loves the dancing. She loves going there.” Mommies aren’t the only ones giving raves, so are grandmothers. Sharon Yaeko Murray, 50, is a makeup artist in a nearby medi-spa, and she takes her three grandchildren: Mia, Jordan, and Kiana. “Mia saw the place when we were driving by and asked to stop in,” Murray says. “I talked to the ladies and could see it was very safe; there are cameras and monitors so you can see what’s going on. I liked the whole feel of the place.” Could it get any better? Well, yes. Child psychologist and college professor Kathleen Van Antwerp, 42, brings her six-year-old daughter, Kylee, to Imagine That! “My little girl goes to the same school as Rebecca’s daughter,” Van Antwerp explains. “The mothers in this community are tight-knit, and when we find a positive thing for our children, we share the information.” Speaking as a trained psychologist, Van Antwerp gives Reindl high marks: “I think it is providing a much needed service for our community. She’s paying attention to where a child is in her development. … Her curriculum is based on the children and family.” This is the kind of word-of-mouth you couldn’t pay for. And it’s paid off tremendously for Reindl. And yes, timing is everything. v

The health industry’s dirty little secret is that most vitamins and supplement products don’t actually work effectively in your body. The body cannot break down and assimilate many supplement products and ends up passing them through your system virtually untouched! The best way to get healthy, assimilable nutrition is through food. Plants, vegetables, fruits and herbs …

these are nature’s gifts for the human body and they work. The problem is: most of us don’t get enough of these in our daily food intake. What’s worse is that many of our industrial food farms add harmful chemicals to our fruits and vegetables to preserve them throughout the long process of getting from the farm to the supermarket to your table. Boku has an even better solution, one that gives you all the plant fiber as well as the nutrients and food value. It’s the green super food powder drink mix Boku Super food. Green super food powder contains pure, dried and concentrated plants in raw, powdered form. A tablespoon of this powder is equivalent to a huge amount of fruits and vegetables. It’s like getting all of your nutrition in a single tablespoon.

PERSONALITY
9 FOR 2009 Don’t look behind you. It’s dark back there. But there’s light ahead, and that’s what these young people represent—forward movement within our community. Looking into 2009, what do you see? We see open road with a lot of dangerous curves fading behind. And that’s the direction these nine lives are heading. Culture still thrives in Ventura County—in dance and theater and all forms of art—albeit less profitable for the time being.Young entrepreneurs are rising from the rubble of a wounded economy. Education and volunteerism continue to flourish. And as we welcome the first vibrant, young president since Kennedy in ‘61, we enter into a level of universal dialogue unlike anything that could have been imagined in the sixties, thanks to the Internet. It takes time to rebuild a broken house. Meanwhile we live amidst the detritus of a construction zone. And people like your neighbors on the pages ahead just keep moving. And the world will catch up. Perhaps in 2009.
A COUPLE THAT PLAYS TOGETHER, OJAI
When Theater 150 artistic directors Chris (the brains) and Deb (the heart) decided to move the nonprofit theater into roomier surrounds, a Ford dealership, an old church, and a funeral home were among the contenders. The funeral home won. The engaged couple that work by the words of Orson Wells—“Don’t give them what you think they want; give them what they never thought was possible”— considered it a fitting venue. “They’ve done a remarkable job revitalizing the best theater in Ojai,” says local actor Peter Fox, echoing the words of many theater lovers in the community. Now with twice as many seats to fill, Chris and Deb are looking toward the future. They plan on working with Ojai schools to offer more classes for kids, as well as improving the quality of their already topnotch productions. In a poignant act of serendipity, the duo met at Theater 150. That was seven years ago, when actor Chris read for a part in Deb’s playwright debut. Nowadays they work together seamlessly, utilizing distinct talents to strengthen their working relationship. See Theater150.org

ADINA NACK
DAMAGE CONTROLLER, CLU At barely 36, Dr. Adina Nack’s list of accomplishments reads like a howto guide to successful social activism. An associate professor of sociology at CLU, she was the founding director of the school’s Center for Equality & Justice. She is the 2008 Ventura County Community Member of the Year, as awarded by Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties. 2008 also saw publication of Nack’s first book, “Damaged Goods,” which highlights years of women’s health research and has already been featured in two MTV documentaries. Known for using a sociological perspective to discuss taboo topics, Dr. Nack recently launched an interactive website (see below) to increase dialogue about living with medically incurable STDs—a fact of life for over 15 million Americans.A proponent of community-based action research, Nack was a co-principal investigator for Ventura County’s two recent studies of Latinos/as receiving HIV/AIDS services. She has played the lead role in collaborating with community groups to organize Ventura County’s annual World AIDS Day events and has won everything from local teaching awards to national research awards. Nack’s compelling speeches have inspired countless people— particularly women. And the best part is: she’s just getting started.

JOHN KEARNEY
KIDS AND COMMUNITY, VENTURA After two Pennsylvania winters studying at Bucknell University, this fifth generation Venturan transferred to Pepperdine and eventually settled in Ventura County to work at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor. Determined to give back to his community, John serves on the Young Professionals Network of the Oxnard Boys and Girls Club and is a Board Member of the Oxnard Rotary Club. Describe a specific project you’ve worked on that benefits the community? Last year was the first year that I helped chair the Rotary Basketball Tournament in Oxnard. We had the largest number of teams participating ever. Why do you choose to work with youths? You notice that the kids understand hard work has its rewards, and that there are many people out there for them, cheering for them, and wanting them to succeed. What do you hope to achieve through your public service? I hope that children in the community will learn what it means to be part of a team, to stay healthy and exercise regularly, and that hard work can make any dream come closer to reality. What do you love about Ventura County? The people. Since we are a small farm and family-oriented community, you know your neighbors and people do genuinely care. For example, the other day my neighbor called before I went to bed to inform me that my garage door was still open. What is one of your greatest fears? I am too young to have any fears. Give me three years. JANUARY 2009

PERSONALITY
ART ANGEL, VENTURA
This 28-year-old artist, founder of the Red Brick Gallery and winner of a 2008 Mayor’s Arts Award, has done more than her fair share to build the relationship between art and the community. She works closely with the Downtown Ventura Organization, promoting local events, and somehow finds time to teach art classes for children. What do you hope to achieve with your gallery? I want to bring art to the community in an accessible, comfortable atmosphere. I feel that the more the public sees what amazing art is created in their community, the more they’ll want to support the arts and buy pieces locally. What’s on the horizon for your gallery? I am hoping to continue making an impact in the community with more outreach and collaboration with local nonprofits. We are planning a series of monthly workshops for 2009 that are taught by local artists, including myself. Any new projects in the works? I’m currently working on a new series. I’m also working on an art fundraiser for “Kids’Arts”and Bell Arts Factory’s youth art program. How are you able to manage your activities? I have very little social life. I love all of the things I do, so I spend my time balancing them. Organization is the key. What is one of your greatest fears? I have nightmares that no one shows up to one of my artist receptions. I know it sounds silly, but I don't want to disappoint my artists. See RedBrickArt.com

SAM BENNER
TEAM PLAYER, VENTURA While on a football scholarship at Stanford, Ventura native Sam Benner walked onto the field at the Rose Bowl in 2000 ready to take care of business. As defensive end, he did just that. And now he’s back, doing the same locally as an award-winning volunteer and Internet consultant. In 2008 he was inducted into the St. Bonaventure High School Hall of Fame and named the Ventura Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year. Why did you choose to work in the Internet marketing industry? I majored in Communications at Stanford because I loved the combination of studying people and how they process media. Working in Internet marketing gives me the opportunity to continue to pursue those interests. What are some community projects you’ve worked on? I’ve volunteered with the Ventura County Educators’ Hall of Fame, Housing Opportunities Made Easier, Ventura County AIDS Partnership, and the Museum of Ventura County, working with the principles of these organizations to help them use the Internet to promote their causes. What would you change about Ventura County in 2009 and beyond? I would love to see a continued growth of the entertainment industry so people don’t feel the need to leave our county to experience a variety of fun things. What do you plan to change about Ventura County? Bring more connectivity between the local merchants and their customers, and localize the global online marketplace. Do you have a personal motto or creed that you live by? Tough times don’t last, tough people do. See WsiWebDirect.com.

JENNIFER LIVIA
PERSONALITY TIFNEY BERTRAM
CONSTANT GARDENER, VENTURA
“Opportunity is often disguised as hard work. That’s why so many people miss it.” These are words that Tifney Bertram keeps top-of-mind. And considering the opportunities that have come her way, this beloved teacher/surfer/gardener must be very hardworking indeed. The local community voted her one of the best teachers in Ventura County for 2008, and her five-year-old school garden program has been attracting accolades statewide. How did the school garden program at Cabrillo Middle School begin? My principal caught wind that I had a green thumb and asked me to take on a garden restoration project. I had to start by tearing out dead trees and grading. I persuaded community members like APEX General Contractors to help with the manpower. What did you hope to achieve through the program? At first I just wanted to beautify the campus and do something I loved. Now, I’ve been accepted to the UC Master Gardener Program in Ventura. It will hopefully give me ideas on how I can fill the gaps between elementary school gardens and high school agriculture classes. How is the garden being used? Teachers take their students out there for class, student presentations are made there—even detention! Some kids actually got detention on purpose because they had never seen a caterpillar or plucked a tomato off the vine and eaten it. Any plans for other community projects? I would like to become an expert on creating and sustaining school gardens, and create cross-curriculum lessons for the garden. JANUARY 2009

MICHELLE VRAKELOS
FITNESS PHENOM, THOUSAND OAKS Keep an eye on Michelle Vrakelos—if you can. The Ventura County native is a blur of innovation, a high-energy flash with a way of turning everything she touches into gold. Or muscle. A professional dancer, Vrakelos honed her chops at the uber-hip Edge Performing Arts Center in Hollywood. M6 Fitness, her new hybrid gym in Thousand Oaks, fuses exercise and dance, and has either the atmosphere of a trendy house party or a family-friendly vibe, depending on the day and time. The buzz around M6 has already attracted people from Ojai to LA:“People just want to be here,”says Vrakelos. “They want to be entertained when they work out.” Ever the innovator, Vrakelos has a knack for creating profitable niches. When she couldn’t find clothes to fit her athletic build, she started her own line—Cozzi Clothing Company—which was immediately snatched up by chic stores such as Fred Segal, Planet Blue, and M. Fredericks. When she took up Tae Bo, her agility caught the eye of legendary founder Billy Blanks: “Your kicks scare me,” he reportedly told Vrakelos before inviting her to join his exclusive Tae Bo team.Which ultimately led to the hybrid concept of M6 Fitness. So what’s next? Live DJs for one. And beyond that, the sky’s the limit. Physical trainer Michelle Vrakelos gets behind her students, pushing them to the next level.

NATALIE GRAHAM
BALLET BELLE, FILLMORE
According to pediatric experts, a normal four-year-old “enjoys making loud noises.” Appreciation of Tchaikovsky comes later—for Fillmore’s Natalie Graham, a full decade later. Which doesn’t seem terribly strange until you realize that Natalie Graham is only 14. A student at Ballet Academy Ventura since she was four, Graham played a lead role as Clara in the Ventura County Ballet Company’s production of The Nutcracker this fall and has all the markings of a future star. “I’m just kind of keeping my options open right now, working hard at what I do and then we’ll see where the future takes me,” she says. Keeping her options open—at the age of 14? Graham’s natural poise lends itself perfectly to the flow and grace of classical ballet. And with her family’s support, this rising star seems destined for greatness in the performing arts. “It’s a little girl’s dream to be a ballerina,” she says in a soft voice, sounding for a moment like any other young teen.“I think my parents just kind of realized that I really wanted to do it.” See BalletAcademyVentura.com
