EDITOR’S NOTE

W Senior Moment

Who is J ohn Platero (p. 32), and why does he mock me? I hadn’t seen his name in my inbox since last fall. Then suddenly, in early May, he’s back. And he's written a book about "Fitness After 40." There he is on the book's cover, at 50, looking like a 30-year-old, and meanwhile I'm trying to forget that I turn 40 in a week and feel like ... a 40-year-old. Which isn’t so bad per se, but still I’m fighting it. Not as nimbly as I fought in my twenties, though. It’s all pawing jabs and defense born of experience from here on out, a downward slide to the last round. Or is it? I mean, here’s a guy who so thoroughly dominated his division at the Huntsman Senior World Games (10,000 athletes from 20 different countries) that one or two officials weren't enough to confirm his age. So they called in a third. Then a fourth. And finally the other competitors, particularly the road-racing cyclists, had to accept that this was no fake ID college prank. When the dust settled, 50-year-old John returned to Ventura County with gold medals from all four of the road-racing events. On his mountain bike, he actually crashed, launched face first into the dirt, rolled, got back on the bike—and still only missed the gold by .14 seconds. (Whoever took that medal had to feel a bit wobbly atop the winners’ platform.) Platero’s approach to health is based on the physics of the body: exercise combined with proper rest and nutrition. And to be sure, those are essential

ingredients in the recipe of complete wellness. I wonder, though, where on the wellness scale they rank compared to intellectual self-awareness—truly understanding one’s place in the world. Consider Jakob Bogenberger (p. 36), a German scientist living in Ojai. How to explain the depth of this guy’s commitment to living well? Every aspect of his 40-acre property is a case study on doing things efficiently—which is to say, doing things well. And in that sense, he leads a supremely healthy existence. But this is no muscle-bound gym rat. Weed abatement using a hand-held scythe, he tells me, has been his workout lately. Rhythmically slicing his way across 40 acres like some Green Reaper, moving quietly, listening to whistling blade and the birds, the oak trees and the whisper of his land. No motorized howl, no exhaust. The home Jakob shares with his wife, Susan Swift, is about as intelligently thought out as a dwelling can be. Their approach is sort of a high form of living well, focused mainly on efficiency and environmental sustainability. Wellness, according to the National Wellness Institute, is “an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence.” I like that definition. It gives me hope, even if I can’t keep up with the John Plateros of the world. As a community at large, I’d say Ventura County is doing pretty well too. This issue marks the third anniversary of Ventana magazine. Which, considering the economic rollercoaster of the time period, says a couple of telling things: Local people are still interested in a regional lifestyle publication like this, enough to tune in month after month; and area businesses value that consistent connection with our readers, enough to continue investing hard-earned dollars to advertise with us. It’s a healthy relationship. Or is it well? Either way, we recognize the importance of everyone involved, including you. Thanks for contributing.

Yoga on the Rocks Local mixologists whip up an alcohol-free cocktail of mental and physical exercise. BY MATT KETTMANN

B

Breathe deeply. Drop into Downward-Facing Dog. Now scramble up the steep mountain. Such is the quick progression of YogaROCKS, a Ventura County-based outdoor fitness class that combines the stretching and spiritualism of yoga with the physical challenge and adventure of rock climbing. Run by Audrey Walzer, the owner of the Camarillo Yoga Center, and Matthew Fienup, the owner of Earthworks Rock Climbing School, YogaROCKS takes young and old—one recent trip had a seven-year-old and her 84-year-old great-grandfather— into the mountains for a full-day excursion amidst the oak trees and babbling brooks of the Los Padres National Forest. The seven-hour, $115 class begins with about 45 minutes of gentle yoga before you’re harnessed in and given the chance to climb routes ranging from easy to expert. There’s a solid break in the action for a gourmet picnic lunch and, better yet, says Walzer, participants are constantly surrounded by “positive, supportive, and loving energy.” That support is crucial in both yoga, where newbies are often timid due to hippy-dippy misconceptions, and climbing, where fear of heights and strength concerns could usually be considered serious hurdles. Not so in YogaROCKS. CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

When it comes to doing yoga beneath a rock climbing site, you couldn’t ask for a better setting: the sound of trickling creeks, mountain breeze through the oak trees, scents of sage and earth. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13

When it comes to the yoga, Walzer says that she doesn’t teach “white leotard” or “pretzel” yoga. Rather, Walzer teaches techniques that can be easily duplicated by participants at home. “Everything we do is just joint mobilization,” she said one recent afternoon beneath a climbing site in the wooded hills above Montecito. Walzer, who’s taught yoga for over 25 years and was a coach in the 1976 Olympics, explained that she also uses the surroundings to aid in the practice, whether that means leaning against a tree or bending over a rock. “We gear it to the group,” she said. “I don’t want people to be turned off.” “It’s just like what we do for climbing,” Fienup chimed in. “We teach the basic steps to the group, and then go one-byone to each participant and tweak it.” That attentive model allows those who want to push it—whether by deeper stretching or higher climbing—to do so, but doesn’t put the pressure on those who want to take it easy. “We have the technical background to challenge people who are gifted, but, at the same time, we are able to create tremendous success for people who aren’t as gifted,” said Fienup, who himself grew up with a “paralyzing” fear of heights. “Climbing was the hardest

thing I ever had to do,” he explained, adding, “Most climbing schools just tolerate people who aren’t as gifted or are afraid of heights. Those are our favorite clients.” Currently, YogaROCKS uses one of four climbing spots: The Foot and John’s Portero, both near Ojai, and Gibraltar Rock and San Ysidro Creek, in the mountains above Santa Barbara. All of the spots are perfect for both beginners and experts, each offering more “user-friendly” options than Yosemite and Joshua Tree, said Fienup, his fingertips still hurting from a weekend on the craggy rocks of Joshua Tree. “This is one of the best places to learn climbing in the country,” he claimed. And the day’s learning doesn’t stop with yoga and climbing. Fienup turns out to be quite the natural history guide; on your short trail walk to the climbing area, he provides the lowdown on plants, geology, geography, Chumash lore, and more, making it educational for the head as well as the body. The combo of his knowledge and Walzer’s encouraging attitude is clearly one of the reasons for the class’s success. Yoga people come for the climbing, the owners explained, and climbers come for the yoga. Everyone else, it seems, comes for both.

Camarillo Yoga Center’s Audrey Walzer (top left) illustrates the simple essence of YogaROCKS, which combines the tranquility of nature, the intensity of rock climbing, and the focus of yoga.

The marriage of climbing and yoga makes perfect sense, explained Walzer. “When anyone is surprised or tense,” she said, “they tend to hold their breath.” Rock climbing presents advanced practitioners with intensely stressful moments, and learning to breathe properly via yoga can be a valuable asset—as it can, says Walzer, for anyone who must deal with the challenges of a 21st century work day. And when it comes to doing yoga beneath a rock climbing site, you couldn’t ask for a better setting: the sound of trickling creeks, mountain breeze through the oak trees, scents of sage and earth—in short, the dictionary definition of tranquil. With only about a dozen people per class and the chance to explore as many as seven climbing routes over the course of a day, few health related day-trips are as enticing as YogaROCKS, which is designed to instill lasting lessons in participants. Explained Walzer, “We challenge students to ask where else these techniques would be useful in their lives.” v For more information about YogaROCKS, log on to E a r t h Wo rk s C l im b i n g.c om or Ca m a r i l l o Yo ga . com. The Healthy Trail Crack-of-dawn sun salutations and heart-healthy chocolates? They may not be the typical offerings of a luxury resort. But for owner “Big Jim” McLeod they’re just what the doctor ordered. BY COLLEEN FRIESEN

I

It’s somewhere between the fifth and sixth muttered expletive that I’m able to finally heave myself on to the top of the cliff. Looking down, I realize that calling it a cliff might be overstating the geographic truth. In fact, once I’m standing solidly on the top, it’s kind of embarrassing at just how little distance I’ve come. Though I’m sure I wasn’t overreacting. The good news is that Tracey Hilton from Red Deer, Alberta, is perhaps in worse emotional shape than me. In contrast, she manages to keep the more colorful language to herself, but I think she looks rather pale. And I can’t be entirely sure, but I think she might have whimpered. The guide and the other guests practically scamper up after us, like nimble goat girls. Tracey and I exchange looks. I am on the first day’s hike with Coastal Trek Health & Fitness Resort near Courtenay, British Columbia. I had pictured strolls on winding woodland trails. In my mind, there

were nodding ferns and sightings of Bambi. My imagination had not foreseen this rather gruelling Outward Bound thing. Did I mention the thigh-high bushwhacking that came after lunch? Did I mention lunch was small? My idea of a spa getaway generally includes sleeping in and lounging about like a Harlequin heroine on a chaise lounge. While eating chocolates. Waking from that morning’s 6:15 a.m. knock, it is clear to me that the good people at this spa failed to read that part of the handbook. By 6:30 I am lying on a yoga mat with a view from the lodge’s perch on Vancouver Island’s Forbidden Plateau. The ocean way below is covered by a thick fog that has created islands out of the coastal mountains. Slowly, slowly it swirls and dissipates as we continue with our sun salutations, stretching and breathing our way to wakefulness. Soon it is breakfast, and while I am drinking my coffee in

the post-and-beam dining room, the entire panorama of BC’s coastline reveals itself. The view reminds me of the float plane ride I’d taken the afternoon before from Vancouver’s harbor. Glued to the little window of the Cessna, I’d watched the wonderland of islands, the fjord-like coast, and the scrimline of the sea below. After my pick-up at the Comox dock and a bouncy ride up the gravel road to the Forbidden Plateau, I’d arrived to meet the other guests. Tracey Hilton was one of them. A construction manager, she was there for the full week to learn to relax and with hopes of going home more fit. Like Ms. Hilton, Coastal Trek was born from a different executive’s need to wind down. Jim McLeod is known as “Big Jim,” and at six-foot-two it’s an understandable moniker. Unfortunately, as the years added up he became more and more tied to his desk, and watched his waist band expand and his blood pressure go up. Soon he was Big Jim for some-

thing besides his height. When he realized it was getting literally to the “do or die” decision stage, he connected with the outdoor specialist and healthy living expert Sharon Best. She designed a program to get him kick-started into a new lifestyle regime of good food and lots of outdoor exercise. Jim was so inspired he, along with his wife Susan, created Coastal Trek Health and Fitness Resort to help other people have the same chance to change their lives. Coastal Trek opened in 2005 and has helped other wild-eyed and too-wide executives and other stressed out clients escape to a place where the emphasis is on healthy, organic foods, hiking in the forests that surround the lodge, and lots of fresh mountain air. But that was then, and this is now. Now we have done our hike for the day. We stumble out of the Suburban, stiffly bending to dump our boots at the door. phonetics significantly. Dental implants feel like natural teeth and patients actually forget they have missing teeth. Improved psychological health. Having dental implants is like having a new set of natural teeth. With all the comfort of eating, talking, and socializing without the fear of embarrassment, the individual’s self image is tremendously enhanced. Improved esthetics. By preventing bone loss, often through bone repair and replacement, implant procedures significantly improve facial esthetics. Regained chewing awareness. Chewing forces are directly transmitted to the jawbone, which helps patient’s chewing awareness. With dentures, the roof of the mouth (palate) and all gum surfaces are covered, which prevents taste and chewing reception. Maintenance of muscles of chewing and facial expression. A sound, healthy bone structure is vital for intact overlying facial muscles. By preventing facial bone loss, dental implants maintain the integrity of facial muscles. Increased retention and stability of dentures. Loose, instable dentures can effectively be anchored to jawbone and provide stability and retention.

These are the main, but not the only, advantages of dental implants. However, an implant restoration can return the function to near normal. An implant stimulates the bone and maintains its dimensions in a manner similar to healthy natural teeth. As a result, the facial features are not compromised by lack of support. In addition, implant supported restorations are positioned in relation to esthetics, function, and speech to mimic natural teeth. Because implant teeth are not bulky and take only as much space in the mouth as natural teeth do, facial muscles and tongue do not undergo changes. In the past 15 years implant dentistry has evolved into a predictable treatment model for replacement of missing teeth. Advantages of implants over traditional dentures and bridges make them the best choice for this purpose. Fortunately, the awareness in the general public about dental implants and their advantages has increased significantly. This has motivated many dentists to become more knowledgeable and offer this treatment to their patients. This is very promising and will undoubtedly improve the

The fact that I’d hiked myself senseless only made it better. The salmon was wild and glazed with a miso sauce. The salad was huge, with local goat cheese and a tangy vinaigrette. The new potatoes were cooked to that sweet place of perfection. Coastal Trek believes in sourcing as much of their food as possible from local, organic farmers. I can testify that I’ve eaten healthy food that ended up tasting, well, healthy, but not necessarily tasty. These people understand that satisfaction comes from eating well and making it taste good. Maybe they think if it tastes good you won’t notice the portion control. And then, oh my. They deliver some handmade good-for-our-hearts dark chocolates. Maybe this healthy lifestyle is going to be alright. Tracey and I lower our bodies into the hot tub. The moon hangs in the crystalline air. Steam surrounds us in our own little fog. “You know,” Tracey is speaking quietly. “That lunch was small, but somehow it was exactly the right amount.” “I know,” I said, “Same with dinner. It was just right. I kept expecting to be hungrier after lunch. Maybe it was the fear factor.” Tracey grinned back at me through the fog. “Pretty cool we did that, huh?” “Pretty cool.” I realize I mean it. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s hike. v

The New 50

John Platero redefines the term age limit INTERVIEW BY MAXINE HURT

John Platero is a serious guy: serious about life, learning, and lifting the fitness benchmark. And he seriously doesn’t look like he was born in 1958. With a granite hard jaw, shaggy brown locks, and a muscled frame, Platero, the founder and owner of Future Fit, Inc. and the director of the National Council of Certified Personal Trainers, could easily blend in with fist-pumping thirtysomethings at a rock concert. Which he does fairly often, pounding out the beat for his Steely Dan cover band, Dr. Wu. At the tender age of 50—competing in the Huntsman World Senior Games—the avid cyclist swept the road racing events, claiming all four gold medals. When the dust finally cleared, he returned to Ventura County with a total of seven medals heavy around his neck, leaving event organizers to reassess what defines a “senior” athlete.

As a super fit 50-year-old, what does your workout routine consist of? My routine is very specific because of my sport, which is biking, and because I have a lot of injuries [from my days as a weightlifter]. I was young and doing exercises in the gym that, at the time, didn’t hurt. But eventually, I wore things out and tore ligaments in my knee. I also tore my pectoral muscle. Now, at my age, I can’t do many things that I could when I was younger. Since cycling is not weight bearing, and neither is swimming, I try to swim twice a week. And I cycle pretty much every day. I usually go to the gym to do specific exercises. As a cyclist, I am in a seated, rounded position, so I’m doing exercises at the gym to counter that. I’m also a writer and a drummer, so again I’m in a seated position. All of my exercises in the gym are to activate and facilitate the muscles I don’t use at those times. I’m not in the gym trying to pump up. I’m in the gym trying to keep muscle balance, keep certain muscles active, and keep bones dense. As you get older, your bones get softer. What are the key takeaways from your book, YES YOU CAN: Fitness Af ter 40, A New B eginning? At age 40, whether you like it or not, you have to deal with your body. You have to be active and start learning about your body. We are misinformed. We have advertisements blaring at us about how you can do XYZ in 10 minutes a day. It’s a joke. If I told you that you could get a college education in 10 minutes a day, would you believe it? This book tries to bring back common sense. You can’t get fit in 10 minutes a day. You can’t learn an instrument in 10 minutes a day. You can’t do anything in 10 minutes a day. It’s bullshit. People are looking for an easy route. This book brings you the science, but then breaks it down into practical application.

JUNE 2009

What are three things people need to star t doing in their for ties to keep fit? First, you have to be consistent; fitness has to be a part of your day, everyday. Second, you need to move. Just take the word ‘exercise’ and replace it with ‘movement.’ You need to move seven days a week. The third thing is that you have to educate yourself. Go online, read a book, watch a video … Take responsibility. What are some of the things people have to be careful ab out, in terms of physical fitness, as they age? You still go hard, but you can’t do the miles or volume you could when you were younger. You have to learn your boundaries. At a certain point I couldn’t run anymore, so I had to learn to bicycle. And if for some reason I couldn’t bicycle, I’d have to learn to swim. If I couldn’t swim, I’d have to learn to dance or something. That’s wisdom: knowing that you have certain limitations and knowing how to work within those limitations. Sometimes people don’t learn and it takes an injury to wake them up. A lot of guys won’t stretch. At a certain point their back will go out. Then they say, ‘Oh, maybe yoga class is good.’ Are ther e ad vancemen ts in fitness t echnolo gy or techniques tha t p eople o ver 40 should pa y att en tion t o? One thing I’ve seen in the past five or 10 years is functional training, which is a really broad term. The methodology moved away from just lifting weights for bodybuilding. Now they are looking at things like, ‘How do you use a lawn mower?’ Trainers started moving toward recreating activities in life using balls and bands and pulleys. That’s one of the reasons Pilates is really popular. It’s funny, because I see fitness in the media more today than ever before. Yet

P H OTO B Y B I L L K N A P P

it seems that the more I see it, the lower the benchmark falls. S o you think the media’s increased focus on f i t n es s h a s a c t u a l l y b e en d et r i m e n t a l ? One of my pet peeves is: How much lower can we lower the benchmark? Now it’s, oh just park a little farther away from the grocery store and walk. Are you kidding me? When you look at the science for females, they have more endurance fiber than men. So a woman who is, say, 40 or 45 years old is still a vibrant strong female. When she goes and walks for 30 minutes—that’s nothing. If we were living in 1909 right now, do you know how much activity you and I would be doing? I’d be loading up a horse. You’d be making butter. There was no washing machine to do the laundry. We’d probably be doing three to five hours of activity, no problem. So for a woman to come into the gym for a half-hour walk, that’s nothing. In fitness, we keep lowering the standard. People say that 50 is the new 30. Wh at does that mean to you? This is my personal belief: At 50, a lot of people are starting things anew. They are getting divorced, or their kids are leaving the house. Maybe, because of the economy, they have to start a new career. Or they’ve done very well, so now they have free time and are doing things they always wanted to do. Mentally speaking, there is that paradigm shift. It used to be that at 50 you were done. Now, for a lot of people, it’s a new beginning. Plus, there is increased awareness in the media about health and wellness. We are talking about sleep, Alzheimer’s, high cholesterol, diabetes … and you have sexual enhancement drugs like Viagra. There is this feeling of, You aren’t dead yet! Wh at was it like to compete and win multiple gold medals in the World Senior Games? When I went to the senior games, I saw 75- and 80year-old cyclists—I’m not talking about riding a bike on the side of the street; I’m talking mountain biking over rocks and sand and shale and on trails. That means these guys can ride a bike on the street for the next 20 years, because that’s just a smooth surface. Their balance and coordination is amazing. You talk to them and they say, ‘Yeah, I’ve been coming here for the past 12 years,’ and they are already talking about next year. They’re excited. I think that’s why they say 50 is the new 30, because you can still be active and do new things. It’s not over. v For more information about John Platero, or to order his new book, Yes, you can! JUNE 2009

i

If one came upon the home of Jakob Bogenberger and Susan Swift by accident —an unlikely scenario, tucked away as it is on forty acres in the hills of Ojai—a passerby would quickly recognize there’s a different ethic at play here. That the home is “green” is readily apparent; the colorblind could see that. But the property as a whole suggests more: it hints at a higher level of sustainability, something beyond solar panels and native plants. The striking utilitarian design is the result of a partnership between the homeowners and Ventura architect David Ferrin, who proved well matched to realize an ambitious agenda. The couple intended not only that their home be constructed with cutting-edge materials, facilitating goals in environmentalism, safety, and durability, but also from Bogenberger’s own forward-thinking design. In Ferrin’s firm, Arketype Architects, Inc., they discovered first a partnership and then a friend, an unusual development in what is typically an arduous process through which many relationships (working, friendly, or both) don’t survive. Bogenberger laughs at the improbability of his friendship with his architect, noting with wry humor that, “Most people who go through construction together get a divorce.” Ferrin echoes the sentiment: “For most people, construction is like tor-

ture. But Jakob is a scientist—for him life is about learning. So it was a joy to work with him.” Friendship came in handy for the ambitious project, when the design’s thorough sensibility ran afoul of civil codes that often seemed to confound “best practice” ethics. Originally intended as two abodes—a day house for living and working; a night house for sleeping, dressing, and bathing—the structures are connected by a glassed-in vestibule, an efficient response to construction codes requiring that they be contiguous. Such utilitarian separation of space was only the beginning of the home’s departure from mainstream thought in residential development. Unlike many projects, where so-called green design serves little more function than a marketing tag, this home is green to its veritable roots. The roof, which is curved both to echo the natural form of the surrounding hillside and to buffer sound in the spacious great room of the day house, is covered in amorphous silicone photovoltaic cells—a system that helped bring the home’s electrical bill for all of 2008 down to an astounding thirty dollars. The walls are comprised of Durisol ICF (insulated concrete form), a cement-bonded wood fiber that is both fire and termite-proof, and finished in permeable lime plaster that allows the home to truly breathe, whereas tra-

Inside and out, the home is an exemplar of how to live well in the modern world. Architect David Ferrin (top left, back) and Jakob Bogenberger (top left, front) developed a friendship as they built one of the county’s most sensible homes.

“For most people, construction is like torture. But Jakob is a scientist— for him life is about learning. ” JUNE 2009

A veritable museum of fossils, the limestone floor (far left) tells a story millions of years long. Meanwhile, the kitchen (left) makes use of modern technology and owner Susan Swift’s personal room (above) has a decidedly warmer feel.

ditional construction seals in air and moisture, often to dreadful effect. “We lose a liter of water in our sleep every night,” Bogenberger explains, pointing out that the moisture typically has nowhere to go but into the walls, where it stays, often triggering common allergies. The floor is fossil-encrusted Bavarian limestone, a surface that is both aesthetic and serves as an evaporative cooler in the summer, needing only a dash of water to help bring down the interior temperature. Bogenberger laid the tile himself, an experience he likened to the reading of a book, as each tile yielded a new “page” of biological surprises in the fossilized remnants of the ancient seabed from which it derived. While the property seems casually landscaped at best, in fact it is undergoing a painstaking process to return the surrounding land to its natural state. Bogenberger focuses on plants that are at once native to the region, generally water and fire smart, and

either visually pleasing or edible. Often both—as in the case of the exotic arugula lettuce in the backyard. Ferrin credits the surroundings to Bogenberger’s hard work and love for biology: “There is a year-round remarkability to the landscape,” he says. “Jakob’s property is like a botanical garden.” In a market where green building is too often dismissed as a luxury, and where durability is typically neither reckoned nor expected beyond the thirty-year span of a home’s financing, this is one green home whose lessons will continue to resound for decades; long enough, one would hope, to see its good sense example become less the cutting edge than simply the state of the art. In this case, the very fine art of sensible and sustainable living. v For more information about the home of Jakob Bogenberger and Susan Swift, contact architect David Ferrin: Arketype Architects, Inc., 275 San Clemente St.,Ventura; 805.653.5088, Arketypearchitects.com.
