EDITOR’S NOTE

MOVING ON

MY DAUGHTER WANTS TO BE CHINESE. But only in June. Like the Chinese, she counts her age from the year she’s in. It’s her birthday this month. Four. Well, fourth year. Optimistic, isn’t she? Between you and me, she’s turning three. And as V enters its sixth year of publication, we’re turning five. However you count it, we’re over the five-year hump and well into the territory of the established. With all the cross-pollination between media outlets, it’s hard for publications to develop an original voice. To grow an identity. Ours is based largely on people— specifically, local people doing things well. The formula is simple: we focus on what’s right about this place and this time. For our fifth anniversary issue, we rounded up five locally-based people whom we consider progressive thinkers. The point of the article isn’t to celebrate success or influence. It’s to spotlight a few (among many) individuals taking positive steps rather than hovering complacently. We’re trying to alert you to neighbors who are challenging the entrenched interests in their field, like Mikki Willis, the Ojai-based filmmaker on our cover (and p. 43) who has put it to the international film community to create works of social significance; or manifesting their own unique vision, like Jodi Womack (p. 44), an estrogenic fountain of entrepreneurial energy who has created a women’s networking group that is “more cocktail party than sales pitch.” Prior to this article, I only knew of one of the five. Not the case with two of our other feature subjects. Patrick Warburton has irritated me for years: since season six of “Seinfeld” when Elaine introduced her new dullard of a boyfriend, David Puddy. To say the Camarillo-based actor nailed that role is an understatement. In our interview on page 16, he tells Ivor Davis that people still shout

JUNE 2011

Hey, Puddy! as he walks past, “even though the ‘Seinfeld’ show is long gone.” We’re not above celebrity wrangling. As long as there’s a local connection and they’re doing more than signing autographs. Warburton has parlayed his celebrity into an annual charity golf tournament to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s great medical institutions. And out in Ojai, even as I write this note, another actor, Peter Strauss (p. 32), is likely clad in jeans and covered in dirt, his arms scarred from agave sap, his boots well worn. The garden he’s created—and I say this without hyperbole; the man spends virtually every waking hour of the spring fine-tuning his botanic masterpiece—is the result of unbridled passion. And serious manual labor. We put a little extra into this issue. Longer stories, more editorial pages, a look back at five of our favorite covers (p. 10). But is it even worth noting that V is five years old? I mean, the average lifespan of a guinea pig is five years. So what? Couldn’t we have quietly slipped Issue Number 61 a Hallmark card and left it at that? Birthdays used to tease all year long, like summer vacation. Remember those days? A birthday would brighten the world. And I think the little people are on to something. Really, I do. If ever there were an occasion worth celebrating, the birthday is it. It has no religious or political or cultural affiliation. It is a celebration of life. Thanks again for slogging through this 500-plus-word ramble of mine, and thanks for five years of loyal readership. Please don’t hesitate to send me a note. Your comments and suggestions are more than welcome—they’re encouraged. Now let’s move on. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

If These Covers Could Talk...

To celebrate our 5th Anniversary, we reached out to the people featured on some of our favorite covers to find out what they remember best about that V shoot Mark Hartley AUGUST 2007 We started the photo shoot at my house, and then went to the beach—I love to drive my ’42 Ford Woody around. I remember the photographer talking about his running gun experiences shooting for the Washington Post, and that was intriguing and interesting to me. After the beach we shot at my office then the Star Lounge. It was a good cross-section of Downtown Ventura, that’s for sure.

Bonnie Weigel MARCH 2009 When I look at that cover I recall sharing the passion to serve our hungry and the belief that now more than ever we want to be there for our neighbors and friends. V opened a space for new conversations that created and enriched relationships. These have continued to move FOOD Share forward, and we are stronger and better because V allowed us to tell our story.

Sylvia White AUGUST 2008 That issue had a tremendous impact. It came out the first month I was here and generated incredible interest, both in the gallery and in my reason for moving here. The insightful article nailed it. I still meet people, from Thousand Oaks to Santa Barbara, who mention first seeing me in that issue. I am so appreciative of the warm welcome Ventura gave me, and V had the keen foresight to lay the foundation first.

Patrick Warburton Takes a Swing

Q&A: The Camarillo-based actor on his new celebrity golf tournament for charity, the reality of TV, and life after “Seinfeld.”

V

By Ivor Davis Photos by Gary and pierre silva

Ventura County actor Patrick Warburton has joined the ranks of icons like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby—with his very own golf tournament. He’s the delighted new guy on the golf block following this spring’s first annual Patrick Warburton Golf for Kids Celebrity Golf Tournament, held in Palm Desert. The event was a smash hit, raising $200,000 to help youngsters battling cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. While Warburton may not yet be a household name like Bob or Bing, the Camarillo-based actor has become a show business stalwart with a solid lineup of roles ranging from his early duty as David Puddy, Elaine’s once-in-a-while boyfriend in the long running “Seinfeld,” to the short-running but memorable superhero stint in “The Tick,” to his current running role in the CBS comedy “Rules of Engagement.” And Warburton is almost as well known for his distinctive baritone voice as he is for his face. He’s lent those dulcet tones to a wide-ranging array of roles including Ken in Bee Movie, Kronk in The Emperor’s New Groove and its sequels, as well as astronaut Buzz Lightyear of Star Command in the Disney animated TV series of the same name. He also voices Joe Swanson on Fox’s irreverent “Family Guy” and Detective Cash in “Batman.” Like a slew of famous thespians before him, he’s found a niche in TV commercials as well, touting the likes of American Express and the U.S. Forest Service. Warburton left Paterson, New Jersey as a child and grew up in Huntington Beach, the son of an orthopedic surgeon and an actress. Now 47, he shares a home in a woodsy region of Camarillo’s Santa Rosa Valley with his artist wife, Cathy (whom he met as a teenager in church), and their four lively youngsters: Talon, l8; Lexie, 16; Shane, 12; and Gabriel, 10. Ventana spoke to Warburton as he made his daily drive from the family’s “cabinesque” two-story home in Camarillo along PCH to the Culver City studio where “Rules of Engagement” is shot. VENTANA: How did you get involved in your tournament to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital?

PATRICK WARBURTON: My wife and I have been blessed with healthy children. And if per chance you’re not … you can be blessed by the helping hand of the work St. Jude has done throughout the years. They’ve increased leukemia cure rates dramatically. If there’s a problem elsewhere in the world—like adrenal cancer in an isolated area of South America—they can go to St. Jude.

VEN: This was the first year of the event. How did it go?

PW: Our target was to raise $70,000 to $80,000 and we did much better. Overall, it was a win-win situation. The kids, the celebrities, sportsmen, musicians… Everyone who showed up had a great time. It’s fun. It’s a tax write-off. It’s a hospital that is beloved, and its goals are near and dear to everyone’s heart. We’ll do it again next year. VEN: Are you a good golfer?

PW: Anything but. I had a better game six or seven years ago, now it has fallen to pieces. VEN: At what age did you decide you wanted a career in film and TV?

PW: I always wanted to be an actor and was inspired by Jerry Lewis (another actor devoted to raising millions for children), particularly after he branched out following his Dean Martin partnership. And I was inspired by my actress mother, Barbara Lord. VEN: Tell us more about her.

PW: She was out of the business by the time she was 25. She did shows like “Hitchcock Presents” and “One Step Beyond,” and she was nominated for an Emmy for one show she did with Patrick McNee. She was his new wife on honeymoon on the maiden voyage of the Titanic. She also did “Gunsmoke” and died in Matt Dillon’s arms. VEN: Where did you get your start in acting?

PW: At 22 I landed a job playing a slave opposite Oliver Reed in a movie shot in South Africa in l987 called Dragonard. VEN: How did that happen?

PW: I’m still not sure. We shot two cheapie movies (Dragonard and its sequel, Master of Dragondard Hill, which also co-starred Eartha Kitt and Herbert Lom) in one go—in four months. They were so bad they never made it to video. They were cheapies starring Oliver because no big studio would gamble on him; he was a legendary drinker. When I showed up to do some sword fights with him he insisted I start drinking whisky at 10 in the morning. I begged off until sundown and then foolishly spent four months trying, impossibly, to keep up with him. A stupid

PW: David Puddy. People shout Hey, Puddy! in big cities even though the “Seinfeld” show is long gone. I was Elaine’s blank and needy boyfriend. I always wondered why Elaine would bother to be with this guy; he was clueless, a bit dim in the noggin. I’ll never do anything as high profile and iconic as “Seinfeld.” It sticks to you—I’m not saying that in a negative way. And “Tick” comes a close second. “Tick” got a wonderful new life on DVD in 2002.

VEN: How did your voice over career get started?

PW: It came after the ninth and final season of “Seinfeld.” Suddenly doors began to open for me.

VEN: “The Tick”—what happened to that big blue bug of a superhero togged out in his outrageous outfit?

VEN: And what about you doing the voice of Buzz Lightyear—after Tim Allen did it first in the movie?

PW: I loved that show, but Fox destroyed it before it ever got going. There were some great people involved. Barry Sonnefeld directed the pilot episode and Larry Charles was the program’s show runner.

PW: I don’t think Tim wanted to commit to doing 65 episodes of a Disney show, so I opted to be the poor man’s Buzz Lightyear. And that led to “Emperor’s New Groove,” two great jobs in the voice over arena.

VEN: I saw it at the TV critics conference in 2002. Everyone loved it. So why did it fail?

VEN: You are finishing your fifth season of “Rules of Engagement.” What’s the appeal of your character, Jeff?

PW: It was a one-camera half-hour show with costumes—and expensive to shoot. Rupert Murdoch, who owned the studio, looked at the cost and decided their cheapie one-hour reality show “Joe Millionaire” was a hit. So they let us die. We made nine episodes and then they sat on the show for over a year. Then, instead of programming us to follow “The Simpsons,” they threw us opposite a hot new show called “Survivor.” We didn’t survive.

PW: The show has a terrific ‘relatability’ factor: anyone who has been married 15 to 20 years can relate to Jeff and Audrey. He’s sort of an everyman, and I like him even though he’s a bit of a horse’s ass at times. Yet he’s not quite the dolt he pretends to be—there’s self-perceived irony. The show’s numbers aren’t through the roof, but we have a loyal audience and the series seems to have survived without much support from the network. v

“My wife and I have been blessed with healthy children. And if per chance you’re not … you can be blessed by the helping hand of the work St. Jude has done throughout the years. ”

PW: Absolutely. Listen, not every TV hit started out as a smash. I remember at the wrap party for the very last “Seinfeld” show. Jerry read a letter from a studio executive who wrote, “This is a shitty and crappy show.” And, of course, “Cheers” struggled before it became a legend.

ART AL FRESCO

Equal parts art gallery and beach abode, the Silver Strand home of Donna and Phil Landry celebrates summer—all year round BY MARK STORER

ago,” she said. The real estate market, brutal in its recent leveling and toppling of otherwise wealthy people, has been largely kind, though prices do fluctuate in the area. But the Landrys don’t actually live in the three-story Mediterranean on Ocean Avenue, an icon in the neighborhood. They rent it out every summer and occasionally during the rest of the year. “We have some of the same people return each year,” said Donna. “They feel at home here and they make it their own. Which is, of course, what I want.” The former interior designer and artist turned the property into a canvas. “We change it every year, putting in new things, changing colors or whatever,” said Donna. “We call it Landryland.” The analogy is not inappropriate. With a team of local artists—Linda Parker, Erin Marshall, Elizabeth Castrejon, Bill Upston, George Pino, Mary Clements, Ashley Boyd, Jose Carrerra, and Ray Wilson—the Landrys have created a live-in art gallery dedicated to pure joy. Murals of ocean scenes adorn the walls, and a veritable wall of primary colors washes over you as you walk through the front door.

N

TO LIVE IN CALIFORNIA IS TO ENVY THE OCEAN. The comedian Gallagher used to say that pioneers came west to California and hit the beach, but it wasn’t enough so they built piers to walk out on the water itself. Oceanfront property is a definitive term and it has come to mean that whoever has it has arrived. Enter Donna and Phil Landry. For the Landrys, it was never a question of whether or not they had arrived, it was a question of pursuing what they loved—and for Donna, that was art. “It doesn’t matter how much money someone has,” said Donna. “It matters, though, how something makes them feel.” What made her feel good were the cottages along Silver Strand beach in Oxnard. A small community that seems lost in time, the locals refer to the place as a kind of Mayberry. “Everyone knows everyone,” said Donna. “This place is a real home for us.” Some of the cottages there date back to the 1920s and Donna has owned a total of 10 of them over the years. “I didn’t tell my husband the first time I bought one because I was afraid of what he might say. But he loves this one. He knew he wanted it 15 years

The “Ice Cream Parlor” serves as a secondary food prep area, with no stove; the lighted mirror adorned with mosaics doubles as a bar in the recreation room. A fountain and a tile floor punctuate the small alcove and porch. But it’s the murals, the paintings, the decorative pieces and even the knick-knacks that capture your attention. It is even possible that these will distract from the view onto Silver Strand beach through a full wall of windows at the back of the first-floor family room, but not likely. The first-floor bathroom, newly finished, is accented by a chandelier of glass bubbles; a sea-foam green mermaid theme covers the walls, and a full bathtub changes colors with lamps hidden below the waterline. “We weren’t allowed to have two kitchens, so we put in a kind of pantry down here,” Donna said. With the exception of a stove, the 1950s soda fountainthemed pantry has a bank of ice cream makers for guests to choose their flavors and a full refrigerator and freezer so the downstairs guests—there are two bed-

rooms here—can make late night kitchen raids without going to the kitchen. When Donna first bought the house, she asked Linda Parker, another Silver Strand homeowner, to “go to work,” giving her longtime friend artistic free rein. “You can’t tell an artist what to do,” explained Donna, “so I just free them and give them a canvas to work on.” Parker took the charge seriously: “I only work for Donna anymore, because she lets me do what I want to do and doesn’t limit me.” As she spoke, she was meticulously adding glasswork and buttons to a three-dimensional piece above the third-floor bathtub. The top floor is a kind of second master suite with full deck outside French doors overlooking the beach. Just outside the bedroom is a small, private landing with a chair and bookshelf and table. “A lot of what I do is put meaning into the pieces that have something to do with the

family for whom I’m working—so the color in here is sweet pea green; it was Donna’s mother’s favorite,” she said. The second floor is really the gathering place. Filled with three-dimensional wall hangings that Parker created, the space holds the master suite and another private bed and bathroom, each filled with the essence of maritime living. The kitchen and a large family room, adjacent to each other with plenty of room for sitting long and talking much, enjoy the full southwest-facing window out to the Pacific. The rooms are almost an image from Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” with Parker and Landry as Daisy and Jordan Baker: The only completely stationary object in the room was an enormous couch on which two young women were buoyed up as though upon an anchored balloon. Strong sea breezes push curtains, draping them over furniture and people and adding to the playful reds, blues, greens, and yellows, awash over distressed antique furniture and stylish three-dimensional art. Sometimes on a summer day, Landry and Parker will come to the house knowing guests are there and sit at a distance and watch. But this isn’t simple voyeurism or even security checks. “We love to share what we’re doing and we love to see people enjoy it. We get real joy out of watching people be here,” said Donna. “It’s our gift to the universe,” said Parker. “It’s an extension of what we want to be—and it’s closer to our hearts than home.” v For rental information, contact Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Property Management Division / Vacation Rentals at 805-985-5190 or visit beachrentals.com.

All the Garden’s a Stage A centuries-old oak provides towering drama. Succulent groundcover and stellar blooms thicken the plot. On the Ojai property of actor Peter Strauss, botany is a theatrical production—and a true labor of love

A walk through Peter Strauss’ Ojai property puts all five senses on high alert. The intoxicating smell of orange blossoms from his 30-acre citrus farm wafts across flowerbeds and into his breezy Spanish colonial home. Your eyes bounce from astonishingly tall agave blooms to subtle, low-lying groundcovers. Dark purple lavender, hot pink rock rose, and vibrant yellow Jerusalem sage color the various gardens, and the sound of bees happily searching for nectar fills the air. Your sense of touch comes alive as you meander paths overgrown with salvias, rosemary, iris, and oleander, the plants brushing against your skin, infusing your clothes with their fragrance. In the vegetable garden, tomatoes, herbs, and blackberries tempt your taste buds. In the orchard, peaches, plums, cherries, apricots, and, of course, oranges, beg to be picked and eaten. And all this from a simple walk in one man’s garden. In the 25 years since Strauss purchased the home, he has become a self-taught citrus grower, researching how to maintain his mass acreage of Valencia and navel orange trees. In that time he has also channeled his passion for plants and transformed five acres of the property into a gardener’s dream: among the specialized sections, a cactus garden, a native plants

garden, and a lush Mediterranean garden. But before you jump to conclusions, let’s clear something up: Strauss does most of the work himself—and he has the scars and callused hands to prove it. “Every plant you see, I put in the ground,” he says. Strauss’ resume is thick with work in theater, television, and film. Widely recognized for his role in the 1976 TV miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man,” he has received two Emmy Award nominations and five Golden Globe Award nominations. His recent film roles include License to Wed, with Robin Williams, and earlier this year he played Leonardo da Vinci in “Divine Rivalry,” at Hartford Stage, and Ben Bradlee in “Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers,” for the New York Theater Workshop. Yet, when you visit Strauss’ home, which he shares with his actress wife, Rachel Ticotin, he’s not interested in talking theater roles and Emmys. He’s all about plants and flowers. “I’m stunned by how much I love being in plants,” he remarks. Walking around the property, he truly is in his element, rattling off plant names (Latin and common names, genera and species), offering a sniff of a silky, peach-colored rose, encouraging a touch of the smooth red bark of a Howard McMinn manzanita—a shrub he calls

Top left: A sprawling coast live oak is the garden’s piece de resistance. Right: Flowering Echium candicans (pride of Madeira) and naval oranges illustrate the balance between farm and garden. Top center: The master bedroom looks onto a garden of clipped and rounded Helichrysum petiolare ‘Limelight’ (licorice plant), Teuchrium fruiticans ‘Azureum’ (bush germander), Westringia fruiticosa (coast rosemary), and Phorium ‘Yellow Wave’ (flax). Left, from top: In the pool area, pots of Butia capitata (pindo palms) tolerate the Ojai heat; fruitless mulberry trees provide local schools with leaves for silkworms. Strauss consults with his 12-year-old Jack Russell terriers, Lily and Pip. Xanthorrhoea semiplana (Australian grass tree) blooms in the cactus garden. Top center: Strauss imported tiles from Puebla, Mexico and transformed the driveway into a courtyard, the centerpiece of which is an ancient coast live oak. Opposite top: Surrounded by silver prickly pear, yellow flowering Jerusalem sage, and upright rosemary ‘Tuscan Blue,’ Agave salmiana begins its bloom. Opposite bottom: Peter and his wife, Rachel Ticotin, aren’t the only actors on the property.

“one of the sexiest plants alive.” He speaks of his childhood in upstate New York, where his mother loved to garden. With a smile, he recalls a memory of her rolling down her elegant white opera gloves to show him the dirt under her fingernails—a reward from a long day spent in the garden. Yet it wasn’t until he moved to California and saw the vibrant colors of bougainvillea and fell in love with succulents that his path as a serious gardener was solidified. Prior to Ojai, Strauss lived on a historic property in the rural Santa Monica Mountains near Agoura. He worked for several years restoring the property’s natural look before donating it (yes, donating it) to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Now managed by the National Park Service, the property is officially known as the Peter Strauss Ranch. The first thing Strauss did when he purchased his home in Ojai was to remove the front driveway and convert it into a courtyard garden. A massive California live oak tree covers the entire expanse of the courtyard, offering shade to a number of white camellias, palms, acanthus, and flax. The scale of many of the plants is astonishing, hinting at their long, happy lives in the shade of this great tree. Boston ivy scales the side of the house, and wisteria drips from a tall, dark brown trellis. Alongside the house, the Mediterranean garden features seven

varieties of lavender, familiar-looking olive trees, and Mediterranean palms. The centerpiece of the adjacent cactus garden is the towering agave. Reminiscent of vibrant green asparagus, the shoots stand at least twenty feet tall and grow at a rate of a foot a day when on the cusp of blooming. Tucked in a tiny sitting area, the ball garden offers a series of small plants, mostly white and chartreuse, shaped into balls—a French design technique in which Strauss found inspiration. Below the house, the secret garden overflows with Strauss’ prized ‘Just Joey’ roses, known for their apricot-colored blooms, and bush germander with azure blue flowers and silver green leaves. The pool garden offers a generous amount of jasmine, rosemary, and gold-colored ‘Amber Queen’ roses. The riverbed garden, Strauss’ most recent project, is designed to look like a meandering riverbed. Building upon his past gardening experience, he says, “I had the courage of color here.” Pink rock rose sits next to a chartreuse euphorbia; reds, purples, and blues that would normally be separated are united. “A really good garden tethers you to your home,” Strauss says, explaining that he plans his acting schedule around his garden. He prefers working out of town only in the winter—when the garden needs to rest. “And there’s no way I want a job out of town in April when the orange trees are in bloom,” he says. His passion is further evident in a carefully mapped spreadsheet June 2011

detailing plant names and weekly tasks associated with each species. “You have to have this inherent, masochistic love of plants, food, nature, putting your hands in the earth and enjoy the process. It’s an expensive hobby,” he says. “Nature is imperfect; you cannot achieve perfection. That’s the harsh lesson of gardening...you have to have a sense of humor,” says Strauss. And his vegetable garden—where ravenous chipmunks, squirrels, and rabbits are having a heyday—is where humor takes root most deeply. “This is the most expensive, heavily-guarded lettuce in the history of lettuce,” he laughs, pointing out the formidable mesh barricade around the plants. When asked about the crossover between his love of gardening and his love of acting, he ponders the question for a long while. “Your garden gives a performance,” he says, finally. “At certain times of year it is on stage, and the errors are glaring, like they would be on stage.” Then, reflecting on a recent purchase of marigolds,” he sums up his love of plants and their undervalued allure: “Where else in life can you get something for two dollars and get back that much beauty, that much joy?” v

LIKE OTHER STAY-AT-HOME MOMS, FLORENCIA RAMIREZ juggles daily responsibilities while keeping a watchful eye on her three young children. Anyone who’s been there knows—it’s a full-time job. Every minute is precious. But when the Oxnard wife and mother times her daily shower down to the minute, it’s not so she can get back to work. It’s because she’s committed to resolving a large-scale environmental problem. Ramirez founded a company called Azul Conservation Products, which sells everything from shower timers (digital and sand) to sink plugs, water saving buckets to low-water seed packs. The mini sand shower timers have been particularly well received, selling hugely and even appearing on the “Oprah Show.” Ramirez parlayed her company’s success into Azul Publishing—turning out books to inspire water conservation—and the Azul Foundation, which donates one percent of all net proceeds to conservation programs around the world. Using the Internet and telephone, she has managed to build an international business with a global mission—from the comfort of her family home in Oxnard—all the while, raising her children. “I wanted to do something that would grow as my family grew and have a positive impact on the planet,” she says. “At first I thought it was

important to sound like I was in an office, but with small children that’s impossible.” Each week, the Oxnard native, who has a degree in International Relations from San Francisco State University and a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Chicago, cold calls retail stores, water municipalities, fitness centers, universities, and hotels, urging them to buy her products as a means of encouraging consumers to take personal action to save water. “I never thought twice about it when I turned on the water in my shower every morning,” she recalls, “until … I saw the data and it was staggering.” In the U.S. alone, 1.5 trillion gallons of water—enough to fill up Lake Erie—are used each year for showering. “We live on a water planet,” says Ramirez. “The Earth is two-thirds water, the same as our bodies … I want to help create a healthier, more vibrant world for my children, and that means getting involved to protect it.” For water conservation tips and information about Azul Conservation Products, visit azulconservationproducts.com. – Photo by Erin Moroney LaBelle

the filmmaker Mikki Willis

“We need an outlet for responsible people to talk about what’s right with the world.”

IN AUTUMN OF 2001, MIKKI WILLIS was, as he says, “just another filmmaker working in Hollywood.” But the clichés about fate or synergy all seem a little empty now, as he describes the life-changing events of September 11, 2001. Certainly, for Willis, 9/11 was a pivotal moment. “I was in New York making a distribution deal for my first film,” said Willis from his Ojai home. “I was in the World Trade Center on September 10 and I was in the vicinity the next day.” The film deal never went through. But still, Willis’s life changed forever. He mounted a search and rescue effort with other civilians and, for three days, assisted first responders in searching for survivors in the rubble. Somewhere down there, he first lost and then found himself. “The things I once thought were so important were so trivial,” Willis said. He began to craft an entirely new vision for filmmaking: “I really changed and reinvented the expression of love for my craft.” He went to work orchestrating what has become Elevate Films, a company that not only produces films but is changing nearly everything about the film experience. “Every few decades, a new discovery is made that gives a quantum leap to films,” Willis said. “It went from silent to sound, sound to stereo, stereo to Imax, and so on. What we’re doing is bringing in the latest technologies that will add a participatory element to the films,” he said. “I’ve had some very mysterious and awe-inspiring experiences with people who have reached out to me,” said Willis. “There was a reason for it—and it’s certainly in the realm of spirit. It’s really about energy, to me, and about tapping into that immense human potential that we haven’t tapped into yet.” Elevate is not just a film company. It encompasses a foundation for charitable work and a series of festivals. The group is building a studio, and there are a dozen members, for lack of a better word, all of them friends and family, working on Elevate and living in four houses on four acres in Ojai. “We’re committed to the whole change in our lives,” said Willis. “We’re growing a sustainable garden and producing our own food; we don’t use cars that often. I found people who are willing to live and work in service to something higher than their identity.” Though he is unwilling to give away all he is doing, Willis did say that by employing things like vibration technology and even vibration healing, Elevate is making films that go beyond a storyline toward making the audience part of the story—and giving them an opportunity to not just be moved, but to be transformed. Elevate will roll out some of its newest ideas at the Ventura County Fair on October 23 as part of the Harmony Festival, a “conscious music festival” that dates back some 25 years. The group has also introduced Play it Forward, a webbased viral distribution network for sharing films with as many people as a participant chooses. “We need an outlet for responsible people to talk about what’s right with the world,” Willis said. “There are so many films with important topics that don’t have distribution. What we’re doing is providing the bandwidth to allow people to show their favorite films and send them on to people they care about. “At the core of humanity is something very good,” Willis said. “When something touches our lives, we want to reach out and share it with people we love and care about.” More online at elevate.us and mikkiwillis.com – By Mark Storer Photo by James Graca JUNE 2011

women’s woman Jodi Womack For Jodi Womack, the regular eight-hour workday never really felt right. So what did this progressive thinker do? She took her entrepreneurial mindset and embraced it as a lifestyle.

In 2007, together with her husband, Jason, she started The Womack Company, a consulting firm dedicated to helping clients manage productivity and what she calls the overwhelm. “We don’t get training on how to handle a thousand emails a day ... and there’s no training ground for managing the level of complexity people face in global companies,” she says. Through presentations, training, and executive coaching, they

help clients create custom workplace systems to maximize productivity. But it is Jodi’s work with her women’s networking group, No More Nylons, created in 2009, that has catapulted her into the realm of networking guru in Ventura County. As a child, Jodi recalls her parents walking in the door from work, and before being ready to help with homework and play, they would say, “Give me

10 minutes to get out of these clothes and into something comfortable.” The nylons, part of her mother’s work wardrobe, have become a metaphor for Jodi’s desire to help women “get out of the work they have to do, and get into what they love.” So what you find at these now bi-monthly Women’s Business Socials is not your typical networking meeting. The events are open to anyone, including women business owners and those contemplating starting their own business. There’s no dress code, no need to RSVP, no cover charge, and no need to pitch your business with a 30-second commercial. “I wanted to create a networking event that I wanted to attend,” she says. The vibe tends to be more cocktail party than sales pitch, and the emphasis is on cooperation, not competition. As Jodi says, “It’s about being surrounded by people who are people first.” No More Nylons is about building up your network of girlfriends and connecting with other like-minded professional women. But for Jodi, it has evolved into more. “It has become my legacy, my gift to the community,” she says. On the horizon? Expanding Women’s Business Socials into both New York and London this year. For more information, including the 2011 Women’s Business Social schedule, visit nomorenylons.com or call 805-798-1295. – By Allison Costa – Photo by Gary and Pierre Silva

the futurist N. Rao Machiraju What does a former principal scientist at Apple, a man who serves on the advisory board to the World Centre for New Thinking in Malta, do when thinking globally? If you’re N. Rao Machiraju, the co-founder and CEO of reQall Inc., you act locally. A Ventura resident for 24 years, Rao sits on the advisory board of Ventura Incubator, which

the city established as a way to lure high-tech firms to the beach community. Ventura is also partnering with venture capitalists to seek out tech companies that hold promise, something Rao knows a thing or two about. He is responsible for the overall strategy and direction of a company that developed a tool rooted in MIT research on memory improve-

ment—a voice-enabled memory aid designed to make forgetting a distant memory. And he has accomplished much of this while keeping a home and raising a family in Ventura over the past two decades. “The incubator has come a long way,” said Rao. “Now there are 18 companies. It has become the place for engaging in technology start-up conversations.” But he gives a nod to the city council for bringing the incubator about. “When I learned of Rao’s background, I thought he needed to be involved on the advisory side,’’ says Alex Schneider, an associate planner with the city’s economic development division. “From his resume to his ideas to his ties to venture capitalists and entrepreneurs—it was all really impressive. Now he’s becoming instrumental in bringing in people from outside and creating a wider network.” To be certain, the idea of Silicon Valley in Ventura was, and still is, a visionary prospect. But it’s just this sort of leading edge spirit that drives the man. His reQall company is releasing reQall Rover, a device Rao says will make your cell phone into a truly multi-platform tool. “The idea of the phone always working for you based on

your context is a powerful idea,” Rao said. “We are very excited about this. These days I wake up to a reQall Rover summary in the morning, and Rover helps, from surfacing the actions that I need to attend to in my email to all other important things that I would want to know: weather, personalized news, deals, places to eat, Facebook posts, Twitter trends. It all appears on Rover’s ‘Here and Now’ screen.” The Rover is more than just the latest gadget, too. Rao believes nanotechnology will pave the way for the next generations of digital devices, and while shades of The Terminator are everpresent when he talks about “personal technology,” Rao’s vision of the future isn’t clouded by the nightmares of ‘80s-era filmmakers. “In the decades ahead, I think self-organizing pervasive systems will be commonplace,” he said. “Our current dependence on things like ‘smart’ cell phones will be completely dwarfed by devices that learn and do a multitude of tasks for us.” Learn more about reQall online at reqall.com. – Edited by Mark Storer – Photo by Gary and Pierre Silva

the realist Sam Thomas Sam Thomas will not be found on top of compost heaps announcing the end of the world. No bullhorn for him, thank you. He’s too busy actually making a difference. Thomas, a professor of religion at California Lutheran University, in Thousand Oaks, is also the founder and co-chair of the university’s sustainability council. Before you mildly applaud the good intentions, consider what the group has done: In the academic year 2009-2010, sustainability efforts yielded a nine percent reduction in energy spending, saving a total of around $100,000. “I’m not committed to one ideological point of view,” Thomas said. “If we can find ways to solve problems, that’s one step toward sustainability.” The council spearheaded a drive to go “tray-less” in the student cafeteria, for example. “The benefits of that were palpable,” Thomas said. “Less water for washing, students take less food and waste less because

they can’t fit as much on their plates, the list is pretty long.” The council isn’t a group of academics gathering in a room with a plan to save civilization, either. “We’re pretty grass roots,” said Thomas. “We have people from different departments and students, and what we did first was go after the low hanging fruit. It’s part of the university’s mission as a Lutheran institution. We live in responsibility to one another.” From making sure that students have reusable containers for water and beverages when possible to compostable cups in the cafeteria, Thomas and his sustainability council co-chair, Ryan Van Ommeren, the vice-president of facilities and operations, have seen to it that sustainability becomes a culture at Cal Lutheran. “The university has always tried to be a good steward,” Thomas said. “That’s not the issue. What was missing is that there was no culture in which these things were being

discussed or valued,” he said. That’s why Thomas began the conversation that led to a half-acre student grown and managed garden and incorporating sustainability in the academic curriculum—from philosophy to business classes, religion to physics. Perhaps most telling of the group’s efforts is the university’s new LEED-certified Swenson Behavioral Sciences building, seen in the photo above. “Sustainability is a big and rich idea,” said Thomas. “It’s related to everything, and you can criticize it in that vein, but it’s a work in progress. It’s about being wise in the way we live our lives.” More information online at callutheran.edu/sustainability – By Mark Storer – Photo by Brian Stethem

Open Borders June 9 - 11 | Thousand Oaks Open Borders is a music, arts, and digital media extravaganza filling a 40,000-square-foot performance space in a vacant Borders bookstore in Thousand Oaks. There will be at least four shows per week and daily gallery and performance art from June 2 to August 7. All profits will support nonprofit organizations and charitable causes. On June 9, Dan Hicks & Hot Licks will be playing; on June 11, Country Joe McDonald & Ramblin’ Jack Elliot. 125 W. Thousand Oaks Blvd. For more information, visit openborders2011.com.

65th Ojai Music Festival June 9 - 12 | Ojai Established in 1947 by music aficionado John Bauer, the Ojai Music Festival has fostered a healthy spirit of eclecticism in its adventurous programs, gaining a worldwide reputation for attracting artists who are given artistic freedom as they perform exceptional pieces of classical music. In its sixth decade, the Festival—under the leadership of Artistic Director Thomas W. Morris—continues this unparalleled musical legacy in which the creativity of the moment and the artists define each year’s event. The 2011 Festival explores the musical interests and celebrates the artistic collaborations of Dawn Upshaw, this year’s music director. For program, tickets, and more information, visit ojaifestival.org.

The Skatalites June 10 | The Majestic Ventura Theater The Skatalites brought together the top musicians and styles of the time-fusing Boogie-Woogie Blues, R & B, Jazz, Mento, Calypso, and African rhythms to create the first truly Jamaican music: Ska. Throughout the mid-twentieth century, experience in big bands solidified the prowess of most Jamaican musicians, but the genesis for many great Skatalites goes back to a boy’s school for the wayward. From the start, The Skatalites changed Jamaican music forever. Tickets $18-$20, 8 p.m. (doors open at 7); 26 South Chestnut St., Ventura. For more information, visit venturatheater.net.

Ojai Concert Series: Maranga Marimba June 11 | Dancing Oak Ranch Maranga Marimba plays traditional and popular music from Latin America and Africa. The music is upbeat, danceable, and family-oriented. Tickets $18 in advance, $20 at the gate. 7:30 p.m. Dancing Oak Ranch, 4585 Casitas Pass Road, Ventura. For more information, visit ojaiconcertseries.com.

Art Night at Ventura Harbor June 16 | Ventura Harbor Village Local artists will exhibit, sell, and create in the Ventura Harbor area. The Ventura County Potters Guild, formed in 1957, promotes the art and craft of ceramics and provides a forum for local potters to share their experiences and knowledge of clay. Screenings at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The fundraiser includes a meet and greet (at each screening) with the filmmaker and Wrecking Crew pianist Don Randi. $15 admission includes a reception from 5-8:30 p.m.

A New Baby A young Navy man recently brought an opal home from his tour of duty in the Middle East. He requested we make it into a pendant for his wife who had just given birth a few days ahead of her due date. Mother and baby are fine, and he wanted to present it to her on the originally predicted birthdate. Unfortunately, it takes a bit longer to make a custom piece of jewelry than the time we had. So, I did the illustration you see here so he could present IT on the day! The pendant will be finished about the time this issue of Ventana hits the newsstands. The pendant is in our proprietary 19K white gold and is about 1.25 inches long. Let us make your dream real!
