TAKE TWO SIPS AND CALL ME IN THE MORNING

A

show of hands, readers: Who here would like to be in better shape? Mentally and physically. Who’d like to chug up those stairs without so much as a sigh, and learn to not sweat the small stuff? I sense a lot of nodding heads. I would, too. Now, who works hard at it? I mean, really hard. Coconut water. Kettlebells. Boot camp. Speed yoga. Given the way some of us stress our bodies and minds these days, it’s no wonder we feel a little… off. At least we’re not alone. Neurosis has been normalized in this era of luxuriant confusion, this age of information availability and the everpresent counterpoint to that information. I did a web search for “modern neurosis.” It gave me a headache. At the top of the list (in case you’re looking for help) was a publication called “The Modern Neurosis Handbook: a Guide to Coping.” More interesting, though, was a reference to a letter written by Harry R. Lewis, a former Dean of Harvard who welcomed incoming students with a seven-page missive entitled “Slow Down.” Brilliant. Seven pages. When was the last time you read seven pages in a row? Now, I’m not suggesting we all bury our heads in the sand (if you’re looking for a good spot to do that, see page 20; writer Andrea Kitay recommends a quiet little cove on Catalina). As a freelance editor and writer, I depend upon this modern web of interconnectedness for my livelihood. I do, however, agree with Harry’s assertion that Harvard students, and the rest of us, need to ask “whether it really makes sense to try to do everything simultaneously.”

June 2012

His point was that today’s tendency toward multi-tasking and hyper-analysis prevents people from realizing their full potential. And I think he’s right. I also think that when it comes to health, a similar sort of frenetic compulsion to improve ourselves can roadblock the very well-being we’re after. It’s like the bacon milkshake (1,081 calories scraped from the bottom of the publicity barrel behind Jack in the Box): we’ve taken great individual ingredients—namely, health and knowledge—and blended them into a dreadful sludge. So avoid the bacon milkshake. Drink tequila, instead. Seriously. This doesn’t have to feel illicit. Everything in moderation, right? Besides, we’re talking about good tequila here, first-rate stuff, made from 100 percent blue agave organically grown by a local doctor who uses his brand (Tequila Alquimia, page 27) as a vehicle to promote organics and sustainable agriculture. But what really got me about this story was the product itself. Over the past four years, in the two most prestigious international spirits competitions, Tequila Alquimia has won a total of 16 gold medals. GQ magazine rated it #1 on its Tequila Hot List. To be sure, this is no local yokel concoction. Like Champagne, tequila has Denomination of Origin; it can only be produced in Mexico. Dr. Murillo was raised in Ojai and has practiced for nearly three decades in Oxnard. We thought that was enough of a local connection. Cheers, Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

an island apart What better antidote to the madness of the mainland than quiet Catalina, where a modern focus on holistic health, ecology, and adventure attracts a new breed of traveler? ANDREA KITAY samples the bounty.

G

eographically speaking, cheery little Catalina is an obvious choice for a weekend getaway from the Southland, but its sometimes colorful past can put the kibosh on vacation plans. Fortunately, decades of playing host to a steady stream of weekend partiers and binge drinkers has left the island nowhere to go but up. Today, a much-needed change is afoot on this 76-square-mile Channel Island, and a restorative getaway is now a reality. Sure, downtown Avalon—one of just two towns on the island—still bustles like any harbor town. Foghorns blare, seagulls swarm unoccupied outdoor tables, and a nonstop stream of ferries passes like clockwork behind rows of colorful yachts bobbing in the harbor. Low-price retail shops hawking T-shirts and key chains are palpable reminders of the island’s past, but tucked amongst them are a growing number of upscale coffee houses, wine bars, and the odd organic sandwich shop. But it’s Catalina’s unique ecology that is finally paying dividends for the island. With 54 miles of pristine shoreline and an undeveloped, rugged interior, Catalina is home to dozens of unique species, from the Catalina Island Fox to St. Catherine’s

Lace. Its unique clear, cold-water marine environment and giant kelp forests are almost otherworldly, earning it top ratings as a scuba diving destination. And its backcountry, once on the verge of ruin from a cascade of ecologically disastrous projects including cattle operations, mining, and the introduction of invasive nonnative species, is finally feeling the results of decades of ecological restoration. Spearheading the effort has been the nonprofit Catalina Island Conservancy, a nonprofit organized in 1972 to act as steward for all but a sliver of the island through conservation, education, and recreation. In concert with the Conservancy’s efforts, the Santa Catalina Island Company and private outfitters are pumping capitol into island properties and eco-adventures, many of which are based at the Descanso Beach Club. Here, activities range from heart-stopping zip lining across canyons and ravines to SNUBA diving (a hybrid between snorkeling and scuba) ecologically unique kelp beds and enjoying an oceanside massage. In embracing its uniqueness, it turns out the island is attracting a new type of visitor: one coming to relax, restore, and unwind—and

Opposite: Catalina’s iconic casino epitomizes the island’s early glamour. Inside, Art Deco murals and a classic 1929 pipe organ lend authenticity. restore, and unwind—and leave a smaller carbon footprint. “We took the Extreme Backcountry Adventure and it was great,” said Dane and Marlena Woodbury, a couple from Anchorage, Alaska who’d come to Catalina to celebrate their wedding anniversary. “Our guide knew everything about the island.” Nowadays, getting there is less grueling. What used to take several hours by bouncing, diesel-belching ferry is now a speedy hourlong affair. For the perpetually motion-wary, a blissfully brief tenminute ride on an Island Express Helicopter (islandexpress.com) gets you to Lovers Cove before you can say kelp bed, and early enough to grab a cup of joe and French toast at the popular Pancake Cottage. On a recent spring getaway I opt for speed. By the time the helicopter rises to its final altitude, the island’s profile already comes into view. Fog being minimal, a day at the beach trumps a jeep ecotour and I beat it over to snap up a lounge chair and umbrella at the Descanso Beach Club, smack in the little cove William Wrigley referred to as “the most beautiful place I’ve seen.” Like Avalon’s three

main beaches, the “club” is located in a public area, but its somewhat hidden position just around the corner from the iconic Casino and genial servers bearing monstrously portioned nachos and tropical drinks makes it feel downright private. Spring for the chandelier-lit cabana fitted with table, chairs, and two additional towel-draped chaises dappled with wild iris and you’ll wonder what took you so long to get here. To my way of thinking, it’s arguably the closest version of Capri I’ll find in Southern California, with the added benefit that I don’t have to whip out my rusty French. Finding a place to stay isn’t much of a chore. Amongst the more than twenty hotels, from B&Bs to family-friendly and luxe, the Pavilion is a standout. Centrally located on Crescent Avenue, the mid-century modern, courtyard-style property is an easy five-minute stroll from the ferries and close enough to walk to everything. A generous continental breakfast of cappuccino, fresh fruit, sliced meats, and pastries is hosted daily in one of two buildings at the front of the property. With comfy couches and a birds-eye view of the har-

bor, the hotel’s public spaces are nap-worthy, particularly in the afternoon before the popular afternoon wine and cheese bar gets going. Less than a minute’s stroll away is the Avalon Grille, a recently renovated bistro-style restaurant with regional American dishes. The eatery is also the exclusive distributor of Catalina’s new wine, released publicly for the first time this year. Starting small, Alison Wrigley—the greatgranddaughter of chewing gum magnate William Wrigley—and her husband, Geoff Rusack, have been growing grapes since 2007 on El Rancho Escondido, previously an Arabian horse ranch established by Alison’s family in 1931. Wrigley and Rusack, the owners of Rusack Vineyards in Santa Ynez, harvested the grapes on Catalina and airlifted them back to their winery for processing. The first public release of just 100 cases has produced extraordinary Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. And while the hundred-dollar-plus price point for a bottle may make your job drop, the wine is stirring a buzz in the viticulture community. To be sure, the island’s new focus on holistic health, ecology, and adventure feels downright salubrious, and more in tune with the natural wonder that is Catalina. By summer, the empty, white buoys dotting the quiet harbor will be full of yachts and small pleasure boats, and the servers at Descanso won’t have time to linger. But chances are I’ll be back, as Catalina seems to have finally found its magic bullet. v

message

MEET THE CONDUCTOR DR. E. Burns Taft

Let the Music Begin!

Conductor & Founding Music Director

Welcome to the Inaugural 2012 Season of the Pacific Shores Philharmonic—the PS Phil. I’m privileged to introduce the community to its dynamic, newest orchestra and to share the extraordinary musical lineup you’ll hear this summer at Ventura County’s beautiful outdoor amphitheater, Ojai’s Libbey Bowl.

Dr. E. Burns Taft is Founding Music Director of the Pacific Shores Philharmonic Foundation and Conductor of the Pacific Shores Philharmonic Orchestra and Pacific Shores Chorale. A long-time community leader and fixture in the non-profit, arts and civic life of Ventura County, Dr. Taft is a celebrated educator, having been a member of the faculty of Ventura College for over 40 years. An entrepreneur with business interests in the Midwest and along California’s Central Coast, Dr. Taft has been the longtime conductor of the acclaimed Master Chorale of Ventura County for more than three decades. The Founder and Music Director Emeritus of the Ventura Music Festival, he is an accomplished conductor and pianist, and has performed with leading classical musicians of our time. Under his direction, the Master Chorale has performed at the Ojai Music Festival under the baton of Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Esa Pekka Salonen, and has completed significant international tours performing signature concerts in Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Dr. Taft has prepared the Master Chorale for performances at world leading venues including the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at The Music Center of Los Angeles County, the Hollywood Bowl, Ojai’s acclaimed Libbey Bowl, Santa Barbara’s Granada and Arlington Theatres and the Thousand Oaks Performing Arts Center. Devoted to showcasing local composers and artists, Dr. Taft has premiered works by such composers as John Biggs of Ojai and John Adams at the Ojai Music Festival. Educated at Yale and Stanford Universities, he holds his masters degree from the University of Colorado and his doctorate degree from the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. A native of South Dakota and Wyoming, Dr. Taft has been a Ventura County resident since 1965.

2012

summer season CONCERT 1 STRING SPECTACULAR

Saturday, June 30, 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2:00 p.m. E. Burns Taft, conductor Yue Deng, violin Pacific Shores Philharmonic Orchestra Strings VIVALDI The Four Seasons MENDELSSOHN Octet for Strings Le Quattro Staggioni, Op. 8, Nos. 1-4 (The Four Seasons) Antonio Vivaldi (1678- 1741) Composed in 1723 Length c. 37 minutes Orchestration: solo violin, continuo, strings Antonio Vivaldi Born March 4, 1678 in Venice, Italy Died July 27, 1741 in Vienna, Austria Music director, teacher and virtuoso violinist, Antonio Vivaldi originally composed The Four Seasons as a collection of 12 violin concerti, but it’s the first four that have embedded themselves into our cultural fabric. Rendering the seasons in extraordinarily detailed program music - images of lusty winds, bird calls, thunderstorms and rustic songs and dances -Vivaldi cuts a broad sonic swath, as virtually every note depicts not only nature’s unpredictability, but the moods and colors of time’s passage. The four Italian sonnets providing this vivid musical narrative were possibly written by Vivaldi himself, with The Four Seasons representing Vivaldi at his compositional peak. Composed in 1723, the work was a launching pad for the concerto form as we know it today. But until fairly recently, Vivaldi was just another obscure composer, virtually unknown here in America through the mid-1940’s. That all changed in 1947, when Louis Kaufman recorded The Four Seasons and the work became an overnight smash – more than 200 years after it premiered. These beloved compositions have since been used in blockbuster films (Pretty Woman), wedding ceremonies and in TV commercials hawking an array of products from credit cars to Lincoln Town cars. And, in what might be the meta-test of classical hit status, The Four Seasons are – yes - available as ring tones. Happily, with these performances, you’ll be treated to the sounds of strings as they were meant to be heard: acoustically, precisely and lovingly, in high-blown Baroque style but with, no doubt, a Romantic flourish still needed – and appreciated - in our 21st century. Octet, Strings, Op. 20, E-flat major Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) Composed in 1825 Length c. 33 minutes Orchestration: 4 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos No matter that Felix Mendelssohn was born wealthy, died wealthy, and, in the process, ostensibly didn’t suffer for his art: His musical gifts were prodigious, beginning at the ripe young age of 16, when, in 1825, he composed his remarkable String Octet. At a time when Beethoven and Schubert were still alive and active, Mendelssohn’s score for double string quartets is filled with zestful youth, yet still displaying the magic and maturity found in his Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which burst onto the scene the following year.

The Octet, signifying Mendelssohn’s formidable arrival, opens with an apparent symphonic orchestral style, its tender and assertively grand gestures seeming to relate less to the chamber music realm than to the string-orchestra serenades and similar works yet to come from the likes of Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Grieg. Exuberant, flamboyant and lyrical, with moments of tranquility, the Octet is comprised of four movements, the Scherzo in G minor (later scored for orchestra as a replacement for the minuet in the composer’s First Symphony), the most famous. Believed to have been inspired by sections of Goethe’s Faust, this movement is also alluded to in the energetic finale, the Octet ultimately adding up to a portrait of the teen as an eternally imaginative individual. Even twenty years later, with his great symphonies, concerti, oratorios and the Dream music behind him, Mendelssohn spoke of the Octet as one of his favorite works, recalling that he had had “a lovely time writing it.” Yue Deng, violin soloist Principal Concertmaster, Pacific Shores Philharmonic Orchestra Ms. Yue Deng (Yoo-way Dayng) is Principal Concertmaster for the Pacific Shores Philharmonic and violin soloist for the orchestra’s 2012 Inaugural Season. Appointed by Conductor & Music Director E. Burns Taft, Ms. Deng is a virtuoso soloist and ensemble performer who has played with many of the world’s greatest musical artists and on leading stages, and is the first player to hold the orchestra’s prestigious post. A native of Hebei, China, Ms. Deng won First Prize in the country’s National Violin Competition at the age of eight. A pupil of Dorothy Delay, Hyo Kang, Taras Gabora and Xilin Feng, she performed the Brahms Double Concerto with the Ventura Symphony Orchestra and cellist Virginia Kron, and recently won a titled position with the Santa Barbara Symphony. Ms. Deng has served as Principal Concertmaster for the Master Chorale of Ventura County; was Concertmaster and soloist for the Henry Mancini Institute in 2002 and 2003; and in 2006, was the featured soloist in the John Williams and Ginny Mancini tribute concert at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, home of the Oscars. She represented the country of China in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition, where she was named a laureate, and is a prizewinner of the Johansen International Violin Competition. Ms. Deng performed at Carnegie Hall and has performed with Grammy-winning composer/pianist Roger Kellaway and Bill Charlap at Birdland. She is the featured soloist for the music score by award-winning composer Nuno Malo, in the film No God No Master, directed by Terry Green. As a recording artist, Ms. Deng has recorded with Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Diana Krall, Josh Groban, Johnny Mandel, Willy Nelson and Dionne Warwick, and on movie scores Invictus (2009) and In Her Sleep (2008). Her album with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Ogermann: Violin and Piano Works, was released on the Decca label in 2007, and the celebrated Mr. Kellaway arranged and wrote an album for Ms. Deng, Both Sides Now. The late Canadian music critic, biographer, lyricist, and journalist John (Gene) Lees included Ms. Deng in an essay in his book Friends Along the Way (Yale University Press). Ms. Yue Deng received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and studied under Zvi Zeitlin at the Music Academy of the West. She completed graduate study in New York and earned her Master of Music from The Juilliard School. CONCERT 2 PS PHIL PRESENTS LATIN JAZZ AT LIBBEY BOWL

Saturday, July 14, 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2:00 p.m. Pete Escovedo & His Latin Jazz Orchestra* *Libbey Bowl debut Through his more than 50 years in the music business, Grammy-nominated jazz legend Pete Escovedo is an artist who has broken down barriers between Smooth Jazz, Salsa, Latin Jazz and contemporary music. Born in Pittsburg, California, July 13th, 1935, he began his musical journey while attending high school in Oakland. At the age of sixteen, he began playing the saxophone and then discovered percussion, which informed his love of rhythm and his dream of playing Latin Jazz music. After performing with various bands, Pete and his brothers, Coke and Phil Escovedo, formed the Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz band in 1960, performing around the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1970 Pete and Coke formed the band “Azteca” that toured the United States with Stevie Wonder and The Temptations. They recorded two albums on Columbia records, which are now considered collectors items, Azteca and Pyramid of the Moon. In 1972 Pete toured and performed with the Carlos Santana band and recorded three major albums, Moonflower, Oneness and Inner Secrets. In 1978 Pete and daughter Sheila E. recorded two albums on Fantasy records Solo Two and Happy

Together which were produced by Billy Cobham. Pete’s versatility as a percussionist has been featured in performances and recordings by a wide range of artists such as Carlos Santana, Tito Puente, Herbie Hancock, Mongo Santamaria, Bobby McFerrin, Cal Tjader, Woody Herman, Stephen Stills, Billy Cobham, Anita Baker, George Duke, Boz Scaggs, Andy Narell, Al Jarreau, Ray Obiedo, Dionne Warwick, Marlena Shaw, Barry White, Angela Bofill, Arturo Sandoval, Poncho Sanchez, Chick Corea, Dave Valentine, Najee, Gerald Albright, Prince, and many others. CONCERT 3

SONIC BOOM: CARMINA BURANA WITH THE PACIFIC SHORES CHORALE Saturday, July 28, 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2:00 p.m. E. Burns Taft, conductor Shana Blake Hill, soprano* Robert MacNeil, tenor Zachary Gordin, baritone* Miriam Arichea, piano Fern Fay, piano Pacific Shores Philharmonic Orchestra Percussion Section Pacific Shores Chorale Pacific Shores Youth Choir ORFF Carmina Burana (Songs of Bueren) *Libbey Bowl debut ORFF Carmina Burana (Songs of Bueren) Composed in 1935-1936 Length c. 65 minutes Orchestration by the composer: large chorus, small chorus, children’s chorus 2 pianos, 5 percussion, vocal solos STBar. To put it quite simply, Carmina Burana, a glitzy scenic cantata, was composed in the mid 1930’s by Carl Orff around a coterie of 13th century ballads by itinerant monks. Based on 24 poems found in a medieval collection, the work is part of a musical triptych whose best-known movement, O Fortuna, bookends the über-popular piece. And just how popular is Carmina Burana? A brief accounting tells us it’s been background music for numerous films and television shows, from Natural Born Killers to Glee (hello, Gothic pop), advertisements (Gatorade, Old Spice), and has also been manna to singers including Charlotte Church and Barbra Streisand, with hip-hop artist Nas “re-interpreting” it with Sean (Diddy) Combs. Its classical ubiquity among choruses, orchestras, opera troupes and ballet companies has also elevated Carmina Burana to warhorse standing. Not bad for a music educator/composer who preferred simple, blocklike harmonies, propulsive rhythms and dynamic orchestral colors that also had (for Orff), a philosophical or metaphysical element. Yes, Orff believed music could communicate not only to children who possess innate musical gifts, but also to adults in a disjointed modern society. His “spectacles” were attempts at rediscovering roots and ancient traditions that ultimately would have meaning in any age. Not for nothing do ice skaters glide to it, video gamers massacre to it and political ads embrace its massive wall of sound. First staged in Frankfurt on June 8, 1937, it was an immediate smash, with Orff writing to his publisher, “Everything I have written to date, and which you have, unfortunately, printed, can be destroyed. With Carmina Burana, my collected works begin.” Cast in three large sections and clearly influenced by Stravinsky, the piece opens and closes with O Fortuna, a powerful hymn to the goddess Fortuna. Acknowledging the inexorable power of her grotesquely whirling wheel – first carrying its victims to the apex before plunging them to the nadir - the music, galloping on hummable melodies and throbbing drums, immediately thrusts listeners into a quasi-climax with its first notes. In between are those three sections: the first a depiction of Spring, with rustic songs and dances; the second, In the Tavern, a raucous, ribald section featuring male chorus and baritone soloist as drunken, blaspheming priest; and the third segment, The Court of Love, an uninhibited celebration of eros, voices of women and children dominating. Concluding in a sonorous choral hymn to the “glorious virgin” – actually Venus, the goddess of physical love - ferocious drumbeats delivering us back to the opening O Fortuna chorus. Ah: The wheel has made a complete revolution, our medieval exploits ending where they began…with pounding timpani. But we weren’t privy to hearing the cantata in the United States until 20 years after its debut: Orff had been tarnished by the pernicious shadow of Nazism, no matter that

the Nazi party, which Orff never joined, had a negative response to Carmina Burana, viewing it, among other reasons, as pornographic. When the cantata did announce itself globally, it eventually caught fire: Huge, splashy and teeming with primal forces, Carmina Burana, one of the few box office certainties in the modern repertoire, has burrowed its way into our musical consciousness; Carl Orff’s strangely hypnotic masterpiece now belongs to everyone. SHANA BLAKE HILL Praised by Opera News for her “glorious sound” Ms. Hill is a noted soloist who has appeared with the world’s leading orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Opera and Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Making her Libbey Bowl debut with the PS Phil’s performances of Carmina Burana, highlights of Ms. Hill’s recent engagements and notable upcoming events include the recent release on the Naxos label of Bright Sheng’s The Phoenix and Ms. Hill’s subscription debut (The Phoenix) with The Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Charles Dutoit; Violetta in La Traviata with Dayton Opera; Mr. Tambourine Man by John Corigliano with The Pasadena Symphony, Roberta in An American Tragedy by Tobias Picker (West Coast Premiere); World Premiere song cycle By William H. Curry with The North Carolina Symphony; Mozart’s Requiem with The Pasadena Symphony and Northwest Sinfonietta; Nedda in I Pagliacci with Opera Sacramento; Violetta in La Traviata with Opera Southwest; Maria in West Side Story with the Lexington Philharmonic; A Christmas Celebration at Disney Hall, and an evening of three Puccini Heroines with The Northwest Sinfonietta. Projects in Development include a classical Cabaret series in Downtown LA in collaboration with The Blankenship Ballet, and a new album/live performance project with Grammy winning producer Andreao Heard. Ms. Hill received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory and her Master of Music from The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. ROBERT MACNEIL Tenor Robert MacNeil is praised by the Los Angeles Times for possessing a voice that is “clarion” and “clear.” Mr. MacNeil returned to San Francisco Opera for their 2010-11 season in Werther and Le Nozze di Figaro and made his debut with that company in 2008 as the High Priest of Neptune in Mozart’s Idomeneo and returned for their production of Salome in 2009. Mr. MacNeil most recently performed with LA Opera in Lohengrin, after previous appearances including The Stigmatized, Fidelio, Il Trovatore, Der Rosenkavalier, Festival Play of Daniel, Tannhäuser, La Bohème and Il Tabarro. The tenor made his debut with the famed Ojai Festival under Kent Nagano in Orff’s Die Kluge and recorded the role of Martin in Copland’s opera The Tender Land, which was released on the Koch International Label. He has soloed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in performances of Elijah, the Sydney Choral Festival in the Berlioz Requiem, in Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Central Union Philharmonic in Beijing, made his Carnegie Hall solo debut in Britten’s The World of the Spirit and appeared in Rome with the Orchestra Roma Symphonia in Verdi’s Requiem. ZACHARY GORDIN Baritone Zachary Gordin has been praised by San Francisco Classical Voice for his “heroic performance” as Escamillo in San Francisco Lyric Opera’s Carmen. Gordin’s other recent performances include Monterone in Rigoletto, Silvio in I Pagliacci and “Opera in the Cathedral” with Sacramento Opera, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas and El Cantaor in La vida breve with West Bay Opera, Germont in La Traviata with West Bay Opera and Center Stage Opera, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor with North Bay Opera and Center Stage Opera, Angelotti in Tosca, Wagner in Faust, the title role (cover) in Don Giovanni with Festival Opera, and Count Paris in Romeo et Juliette with Opera San Jose. As a countertenor he appeared with San Francisco Opera, Berkeley Opera, the Ibla International Festival, Oakland Lyric Opera, and the Berkeley Contemporary Chamber Players. With the Oakland East Bay Symphony, Mr. Gordin has sung Faure’s Requiem, Verdi’s Otello, Kurt Weill’s Street Scene and “A Night at the Opera,” as well as Orff’s Carmina Burana, which he has also sung with the Santa Clara Chorale, the Choral Project, and Oakland Symphony Chorus. This performance is Mr. Gordin’s Libbey Bowl debut.

CONCERT 4

POPS UNDER THE STARS: MUSIC FOR COWBOYS & COWGIRLS Saturday, August 11, 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 12, 2:00 p.m. E. Burns Taft, conductor Pacific Shores Philharmonic Orchestra WILLIAMS Star Wars Main Theme BARRY Symphonic Suite from Dances With Wolves DESPLAT/WILLIAMS Suite from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 COPLAND Hoedown from Rodeo GROFÉ Grand Canyon Suite Star Wars Main Theme John Williams (1932- ) Composed in 1977 Duration c. 6 minutes Orchestration: 3 flute, 2 oboe, 3 clarinet, 2 bassoon, 4 French horn, 3 trumpet, 3 trombone, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion, harp, piano/celeste, strings. Celebrating its 35 anniversary this year, George Lucas’ Star Wars was originally released in 1977 by 20th Century Fox, becoming a worldwide pop culture phenomenon. One of the most successful film franchises of all time, the series is also credited as the beginning of a revival of grand symphonic scores in the style of old Hollywood. Grammy-winning composer John Williams used a technique that had been introduced by the grandest of opera composers, Richard Wagner, in his epic music dramas – the “leitmotif,” a phrase or melody that signifies a character, place, plot device, mood, or idea. The main theme is associated with the hero of the saga, Luke, and heroism and adventure, heard in the opening titles. The lush theme for Princess Leia follows, representing both her romanticized vulnerability and stalwart independence. The Imperial March represents villainous Darth Vader and his oppressive hold over the Galactic Empire. Yoda’s theme conjures images of Luke’s Jedi teacher, and the work’s final sequence, The Throne Room, brings the symphonic suite to a triumphant conclusion. Dances with Wolves, Concert Suite John Barry (1933-2011) Composed in 1990 Duration: c. 11 minutes Orchestration: 2 flute, 1 oboe 3 clarinet, 2 bassoon/4 French horn, 3 trumpet, 3 trombone, 1 tuba/timpani, percussion, harp, piano/strings The late English composer John Barry left behind one of the most extraordinary legacies of composition for film music. Best known for his work as an arranger and composer on the James Bond movies, he established that series’ signature blend of classical orchestral scoring with more modern jazz and pop sounds. Barry won an Oscar for his work on Born Free and a Grammy for Midnight Cowboy and was adept at lush, large-scale scores. His epic Dances With Wolves score, written for the favorite Kevin Costner film, so perfectly captured the sounds and sentiments of the American west, and its sweeping musical imagery brings the grand prairies sonically alive. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Concert Suite No. 2 Alexandre Desplat (1961) and John Williams, arr. By Brubaker Composed in 2011 Duration c. 25 minutes Orchestration: 2 flute, 1 oboe, 3 clarinet, 2 bassoon/4 French horn, 3 trumpet, 3 trombone, 1 tuba/timpani, 4 percussion, harp, strings Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2, is a concert suite of the penultimate entry in the favorite movie series based on the wildly popular books by author J. K. Rowling. Composer Alexander Desplat had the arduous task of creating the soundtrack, for which iconic, Grammy-winning film music composer John Williams had laid the previous foundation. The piece includes the ever familiar sound of “Hedwig’s Theme” as well as stirring sounds in other themes “Statues” and “Courtyard Apocalypse” that will likely become a favorite of Potter aficionados everywhere. Hoe Down from Rodeo Aaron Copland (1900 – 1990) Composed in 1942 Duration c. 3 minutes Orchestration: 3 flute, 3 oboe, 3 clarinet, 2 bassoon/4 French horn, 3 trumpet, 3 trombone, 1 tuba/timpani, 3 percussion/piano/strings Rodeo was Copland’s second ballet score with a Wild West theme, the first being Billy the Kid from 1938. The work was written for Agnes de Mille, who danced the lead in the fantastically successful premiere of the production at the Metropolitan Opera

in October 1942. The action depicts lively cowboy dances in which the Cowgirl tries to rope herself a suitable mate. “Hoe-Down”, the last of four dance episodes of the composer’s 1943 orchestral suite based on the ballet, is a recreation of Appalachian fiddler W.M. Stepp’s version of the square dance folk tune “Bonaparte’s Retreat” and the knee- slapping middle section also makes use of Western folk tunes (first in the trumpet and then in the oboe and solo violin). The Hoe Down movement of the larger Rodeo has become one of the most recognized works by any American composer, having been used widely times in movies and on television. Grand Canyon Suite Ferdé Grofé (1892 – 1972) Composed in 1929-1931 Duration c. 33 minutes Orchestration: 3 flute, 3 oboe, 3 clarinet, 3 bassoon/4 French horn, 3 trumpet, 3 trombone 1 tuba/timpani, 3 percussion/harp, piano, celeste/strings The subject of paintings, photographs, books, poetry, and literature, the Grand Canyon remains one of America’s greatest natural landmarks. The inspiring, glowing landscape gave rise to the enormously popular Grand Canyon Suite, written by composer Ferdé Grofé who, just before the 1920s, was an itinerant pianist roaming the desert and mountain country of Arizona, playing in hotels, vaudeville houses and gathering places of Western elite. Falling under the Canyon’s inevitable spell, he vowed to translate his vivid impressions of the landmark’s majestic beauty into a more tangible form. “It became an obsession,” he wrote later. “The richness of the land and the rugged optimism of its people had fired my imagination. I was determined to put it all to music…” Comprising five movements, the piece includes Sunrise; The Painted Desert; On The Trail; Sunset; and Cloudburst. CONCERT 5

WORLD MUSIC: THE FLAME OF TANGO Saturday, August 25, 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 26, 2:00 p.m. E. Burns Taft, conductor Celino Romero, guitar Pacific Shores Philharmonic Orchestra RODRIGUEZ La Cumparista Tango PIAZZOLLA Oblivion CURTIS Tango La Invitación PIAZZOLLA Meditango GARDEL Por Una Cabeza PIAZZOLLA Le Grand Tango RODRIGO Concierto de Aranjuez SURINACH Ritmo Jondo La Cumparsita G.H. Matos Rodriguez (1897 – 1948) Composed in 1917 Duration c. 4 minutes Orchestration: Violin A, Violin B, Cello, Contra Bass, Piano, Bandoneón, Guitar, Percussion Gerardo Hernan Matos Rodríguez a Uruguayan musician, composer and journalist who was born in Montevideo, the son of the owner of the Moulin Rouge, a popular local cabaret. He began composing as a young student in 1917, and his first known work, La Cumparsita, which he wrote on the piano of the Federación de Estudiantes of Uruguay, became one of the most recognizable tangos in the world. Ironically, Rodriguez was initially too shy to play the piece himself, and it became well known through the performance of others. Originally a Uruguayan carnival march, “La cumparsita” translates as “the little parade.” Oblivion Astor Piazzolla (1921 – 1992) Composed in 1982 Duration c. 5 minutes Orchestration by Eduardo Marturet (2001): Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon/Timpani, Drum/Strings Noted as the kind of Nuevo Tango, Argentinian-born Astor Piazzolla grew up in New York where he mastered the bandoneón and became acquainted with legendary tango singer-composer Carlos Gardel. Piazzolla claimed to have studied with three great teachers: Alberto Ginastera, Nadia Boulanger, and the city of Buenos Aires. Boulanger may have persuaded Piazzolla to pursue his interest in the tango, but it was the city Buenos Aires itself that taught him tango’s secrets, which he discovered “in a cold room in a boarding house, in the cabarets in the 1940s, in the cafés with balconies and orchestras, in the people of yesterday and today, in the sound of the streets.” Piazzolla

composed Oblivion in 1982 for Mario Bellocchio’s film Enrico IV (1984), adapted from a play by Luigi Piradello. The protagonist is an actor-historian who suffers a fall during an historical pageant and, upon regaining consciousness, assumes the identity of the character that he was portraying: Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor. Piazzolla’s nostalgic sound unfolds in a slow milonga, a song genre of Uruguay and Argentina that was a forerunner of the tango. Tango La Invitación Mike Curtis (1952 - ) Composed in 1999 Duration c. 4 minutes Orchestration by Charles Helden: 2 flute, 2 oboe, 2 clarinet, 2 bassoon/2 French horn, 2 trumpet/2 percussion/strings –or- flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon/2 percussion Written in 1999 at the invitation of Eugene Symphony Orchestra conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Mike Curtis’ Tango La Invitacion blends tango style sounds with elements of Klezmer music. The PS Phil’s performance of the work features an orchestration by Charles Helden. Medi-tango Astor Piazzolla Composed in 1974 Duration c. 6 minutes Orchestration: Marimba, Vibraphone In a remarkable duet for marimba and vibraphone, Piazzolla’s Medi-tango begins and a passionate, march of anxiety. The work soon descends with movements slowing, and mood shifting. The music becomes smoky and nocturnal, beautifully captured in the longing sound of the marimba’s rosewood and vibraphone’s ring, both mesmerizing and meditative. Por Una Cabeza Carlos Gardel (1890 -1935) Composed in 1935 Duration c. 3 minutes Orchestration arr. By Wolfgang Birtel: solo clarinet/strings Although he was born in the south of France, Carlos Gardel insisted that he was a child of Uruguay. In any case, his unmarried mother moved to Argentina when he was an infant, and he grew up to become the most enduring voice of the Argentine tango. He started out as a bar singer and party entertainer, but in 1917 he catapulted to fame in South America and beyond with his song “Mi noche triste,” which sold more than 100,000 copies. His career ended in a plane crash in Medellín, Colombia, in 1935, with his friend Alfredo Le Pera, who had written the lyrics for “Por una cabeza”, seated next to him. The work’s title, translated as “by a head,” are the sentiment of a horse-race gambler who compares his compulsion for the track to his addiction to women. Gardel sang it stunningly in his final film, Tango Bar (1935), but it has also been heard in many other films, including Martin Brest’s 1992 drama Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino. Le Grand Tango Astor Piazzolla Composed in 1982 Duration c. 12 minutes Orchestration by Paul Salerni: solo cello/strings Le Grand Tango, which Piazzolla wrote specifically for cello and piano, is one of his few chamber works and one of his few pieces of “classical” music, though it too is driven by the varying moods and vitality of the tango. The work has become a great favorite of cellists and is episodic in structure: moments of languor alternate with impassioned sequences full of energy, with this tango rushing to its fiery close on a great upward glissando. Concierto de Aranjuez Joaquín Rodrigo (1901 – 1999) Composed in 1939 Duration 20 minutes Orchestration: guitar solo/2 flute, 2 oboe, 2 clarinet, 2 bassoon/2 horn, 2 trumpet/strings The music of Joaquin Rodrigo is steeped in the music and culture of his native Spain. Born in Sagunto, Valencia, in 1901, and blinded at the age of three by diphtheria, he turned early to a life of music. A talented pianist as well as composer, he won honors early for his 1924 work, Cinco piezas infantiles, as a young music student at the Conservatoire in Valencia. He went on to study in Paris but the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s caused him to leave; he and his wife, pianist Victoria Kamhi, barely made ends meet teaching music and Spanish in France and Germany. In 1939 they returned to Spain, and in 1940, Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez premiered in Barcelona with guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza. An instant success, the work brought Rodrigo international fame, becoming the most popular 20th-century concerto ever written, being arranged for many other solo instruments. The theme of the second movement was famously adapted by Miles Davis in his Sketches of Spain album in 1960, his version in turn becoming a jazz standard. The opening movement, Allegro

con spirito, is based on traditional dances such as the fandango. The guitar enters with a strummed passage, joined by agile counterpoint from the woodwinds, with strings entering with quickly bowed chords. Gentleness becomes longing in the Adagio. The guitar strums quietly while the English horn plays a plaintive melody inspired by the saeta, an Andalusian lament sung during Holy Week. The final movement, Allegro gentile, is a clever combination of Baroque-sounding counterpoint and dancing, folk-like melodies. Ritmo Jondo Carol Surinach (1915 – 1997) Composed in 1945 Duration c. 20 minutes Orchestration: 1 flute (piccolo), 1 oboe ( English horn), 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon/timpani, 2 percussion/3 hand clappers/strings The three Flamenco rhythms, “Ritmo Jondo”, were first performed in a concert of percussion music at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on May 5, 1952. The separate movements of Surinach’s work drawn influence from Spanish gypsy sources: Bulerias: A spritely, fast, Flamenco dance, improvisatory in character with shifting rhythms. The dancer punctuates the guitar and vocal accompaniment with heelstamping and finger-snapping, while the onlookers interject rhythmic hand-clapping and shouts to spur the dancer on; the Saeta: A slow ritual song of Seville, sung in the streets during the Good Friday procession. Instruments are prohibited during this season; however, muffled drums are often employed, adding to the mournful mood of lamentation; and Garrotin: A violent, temperamental dance of Flamenco origin, accompanied only by snatches of melody, sung by the dancer and the staccato clapping rhythms of the surrounding observers. Burns Taft, conductor Karen Benjamin, soprano* Virginia Kron, cello Pacific Shores New Music Group *Libbey Bowl debut RAVEL Chansons Madécasses DEL AGUILA Pacific Serenade HOGAN Questions of Travel TOWER Amazon VILLA LOBOS Assobio a Jato, W 493 (The Jet Whistle) BARBER Knoxville Summer of 1915, Op. 24 Chansons Madécasses Maurice Ravel (1875 – 1937) Composed in 1925-26 Text by Evariste Désiré de Forges Parny (1753-1814) Duration c. 12 minutes Orchestration: mezzo-soprano/flute/cello/piano Ravel’s Chansons Madécasses come late in the composer’s career. In 1925 Ravel received a commission from the American arts patron Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge for a set of songs, with an unusual request: Ravel was free to choose the texts, but she asked that they be accompanied, if possible, by an ensemble of flute, cello, and piano. Ravel–who had just completed Tzigane and his orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition–accepted the condition, in turn making a surprise choice of texts. In his Chansons Madécasses, which means “Songs of Madagascar” or “Madagascan Songs,” Ravel set three poems that Évariste Parny claimed to have translated from the original in 1787 under the title Chansons madécasses, traduites en françois, suivies de poésies fugitives. Scholars have challenged the authenticity of these “fugitive poems,” suggesting that rather than translating native poetry, Parny (1753-1814) wrote them himself while living in India and based their style on poems from Madagascar. Whatever their origin, these songs and their shocking texts—market by explicit sexuality and political sentiments—caused a sensation at their first performance in Paris on June 13, 1926, with some members of the audience walking out. Ravel himself described this music: “I believe the Chansons madécasses introduce a new element, dramatic–indeed erotic, resulting from the subject of Parny’s poems. The songs form a sort of quartet in which the voice plays the role of the principal instrument. Simplicity is all-important.”

Knoxville - Summer of 1915, Op. 24 Samuel Barber (1910-1981) Composed in 1947 Text (1938) by James Agee Duration c. 16 minutes Orchestration: mezzo-soprano/flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon/2 French horns, 1 trumpet/ triangle/harp/strings Pacific Serenade Miguel del Aguila (1957 - ) Composed in 1998 Duration c. 16 minutes Orchestration: clarinet/string quartet In his Pacific Serenade, Grammy-nominated composer Miguel del Aguila of Camarillo notes that he is striving to treat the clarinet as the “singer” in this improvisatory and gentle serenade for clarinet and string quartet. Utilizing Latin song elements (especially the nostalgic Brazilian folk song), the work’s movements are generally structured with a recurring line in the string quartet with color by the clarinet playing (singing) the melodies. As the composer says in his introductory notes, “In an age of boom boxes, media bombardment of information, and pop culture becoming increasingly aggressive, boisterous and violent, I felt the need to write just the opposite…to show once more that less is more.” Questions of Travel Leslie Hogan (1964 - ) Composed in 2003 Text by Elizabeth Bishop (1916-1979) Duration c. 13.5 minutes Orchestration: Flute, Clarinet/Violin, Cello, Bass/Piano/1 Percussion, marimba, 2 tomtoms, 2 bongos, large suspended cymbal, bass drum, mezzo soprano Written by celebrated local composer Leslie Hogan of Santa Barbara, Questions of Travel is a remarkable musical setting of the Elizabeth Bishop poem of the same name, composed for mezzo-soprano and large chamber ensemble. Considered one of the most important and distinguished American poets of the 20th century, Bishop is the former Poet Laureate of the United States and a winner of the Pulitzer and National Book Awards. Her quiet charm, endearing frailty and vivid depictions of nature are perfect companions to Hogan’s genius, which increasingly reflects the composer’s longtime fascination with other art forms and the potential of music to reflect and respond to visual stimuli from the natural world.

Composed in 1947 for the soprano Eleanor Steber, Barber’s Knoxville – Summer of 1915 was originally for symphony orchestra, but the composer reduced the scoring to more intimate forces of seven winds, harp triangle and strings only three years later. Opening with a gentle lullaby theme conjuring images of innocent youth and the simple niceties of summer days, the work is a setting of author James Agee’s text describing his own childhood in Knoxville, Tennessee. The moving words, sung by solo mezzo-soprano, are marked by a conversational simplicity that is both beautiful yet deceptive. Agee’s text exquisitely pairs with Barber’s musical sensitivities, the result being a soft, forceful musical portrait that is at once gentle and nostalgic, but not untroubled. KAREN BENJAMIN Karen Benjamin (soprano) has over twenty years of performing experience in musical theatre, opera, and cabaret. In the last few years she has focused on producing and performing vocal recitals specializing in art song. She is currently presenting Music of the People: Songs of 19th Century America and Chick Songs: Art Songs by Women Composers around the southland area, was an original cast member of the Los Angeles production of Phantom of the Opera starring Michael Crawford, and starred in a Stephen Sondheim tribute with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Benjamin has sung French cabaret songs at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, performed the songs of Kurt Weill with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Chamber Society and appeared as an orchestral soloist with major orchestras. She created the role of Rocket J. Squirrel in LA Opera’s production of Les Moose: The Operatic Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. With her husband, 91.5 FM Classical KUSC radio morning host, Alan Chapman, she has appeared widely in cabaret evenings of Mr. Chapman’s original songs as well as concerts dedicated to preserving the American Songbook. They have performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, New York’s Town Hall, Los Angeles Music Center, Geffen Playhouse, Pepperdine University, Ford Amphitheatre, Broad Stage, Edye Second Space, Dallas Museum of Art, and many other venues across the US. Ms. Benjamin received her master’s in vocal performance from the USC Thornton School of Music and is a member of the music faculty at Santa Monica College and Pasadena City College.

Amazon Joan Tower (1938 - ) Composed in 1977 Duration c. 13 minutes Orchestration: flute, clarinet/violin, cello/piano Written by American composer Joan Tower, Amazon derives inspiration from the great Brazilian river, which provides imagery captured musically in this piece. Like a river, the music features a consistent background flow that is interrupted only occasionally by “static” events or by silence, and which undergoes changes in speed and width through the pacing of notes and the specific texture being articulated. Different kinds of associations with the river emerge throughout the work, specifically in trill passages that echo ripples of water and in fast unison passages that have the effect of a waterfall and forceful currents. Assobio a Jato, w. 493 (The Jet Whistle) Heitor Villa Lobos (1887 – 1959) Composed in 1950 Duration c. 10 minutes Orchestration: flute/cello With an oeuvre that comprises some 700 works, including 12 symphonies, 17 string quartets, myriad solo concertos for piano, harmonica and guitar, operas, ballets, and more, Brazilian born composer Heitor Villa Lobos derived inspiration from late Romanticism and Impressionism and, after initial training from his father, himself an amateur cellist, earned a living by playing cello in cafés and restaurants. Like Bartók and Kódaly in Hungary and Vaughan Williams in England, he collected folk music throughout Brazil from 1905–12 while continuing his formal studies. The composer’s lack of full, traditional musical training was perhaps a benefit since it both challenged and freed his imagination to find his own musical voice. “I have always searched for a synthesis between western culture and that of my own country,” he wrote. Assobio a Jato (“The Jet Whistle”), a duet for flute and cello, is a relatively late work in Villa-Lobos’ life. The opening Allegro non troppo finds the cello singing in rapture while the flute comments in a sequence of ironic “yips” and flighty asides. In the Adagio, the two instruments draw musically near in a spirit of pensive rumination—an intimate dialogue between close friends. In a signature moment of the piece, and on the final page, the flutist is instructed “to blow into the embouchure fff as if one were warming up the instrument on a cold day.”

wimming is what kids in Southern California call a “no-brainer.” Yet, it tops the list of low-impact aerobic workouts, which study after study shows are the very best thing for overall health. It seems no wonder then that Ventura’s own Buenaventura Swim Club was born in 1962 to accommodate all types, from casual to serious, playful to aggressive. Their track, or rather pool record is filled with results, too. From Jim McConica’s 1972 Olympic Trials finals and gold medal in the Pan American games to Katie Myers, who in 1983 at the age of 13 was the youngest Olympic Trials qualifier, the club’s roster is riddled with Olympians and competitors who have set records, swum hard, and brought home gold. With some 260 members—children, teens, and adults—the private club is open to all who want to try out. “We have different names for each group of swimmers,” said Jason York, the head coach for the club, which trains at Ventura Aquatic Center on Kimball Road. “For kids, there’s Bronze Group, Silver Group, and Gold Group; and then Senior Group and National Group.” The first set of groups is non-competitive, according to York, but once they get to the senior level, competition begins. “Then we have our adult club, called the Masters, and even that’s broken into different ability levels. We focus on the fundamentals: first on body position and posture in the water. We get people comfortable in the water and then teach each of the

four strokes part by part until a swimmer is comfortable.” York said that the club also boasts a number of age group world record holders. “Swimming is a great sport,” he said. “You can do it forever. So we have age group breakdowns and those records are held in each group.” The program is year-round, which makes sense considering Ventura’s temperate climate; even on those chilly 40-something mornings, jumping into a heated pool doesn’t seem so bad. But like many sports, devotees become addicts and swimming becomes a lifestyle, like cycling or running. Since it’s so low impact, swimming is not only physically healthy—it’s good for one’s mental health as well. York was a scholarship swimmer at UC Santa Barbara and said he settled into coaching as a career because it’s something he always loved. He coached for a time at the Santa Clara Swim Club under Dick Jochums, a team with more Olympians and record holders than any club team in the world. Up at 4:30 every morning, York said seven-day workweeks are normal. “It’s something you really have to love—and I do. I work with some great up and coming swimmers, nine of them are qualified for sectional competitions as well as junior Internationals,” he said. Those athletes include Ventura High School students Chesna Biolley, Nick Vargas, and Austin Takeda. “Our athletes can stand toe to toe with some of the greatest swimmers in the world.” v

years ago.” It only took a short amount of time for the eye doctor to see what he wanted to do, but nearly fourteen passed between his first agave planting and the first bottle of tequila. “I knew I wanted to grow agave, and I wanted to do it organically, as sustainably as possible.” He knew what he’d call it, too: Tequila Alquimia. “Alchemy is creating gold from other metals,” he explained. “We’re creating liquid gold from the earth.” The naysayers were quick to point out that Arandas, and more specifically, the Murillo ranch’s corner of Arandas, would never grow agave. “Everyone believed that the soil wasn’t rich enough and that there wasn’t enough rain,” Murillo said. “We have very little top soil in our area in Jalisco. It’s a kind of microclimate. But there’s a sandstone substrate beneath the surface that conserves humidity while also draining the soil well.” Murillo took the next step. Working with his ranch foreman, Luis Guzman, who has been with him since he started, he began researching how best to grow the plants sustainably and organically. “When you grow agave with chemical fertilizers, the major nutrients the plant needs are on the surface. But when you don’t use those, the root system has to work much harder.” That’s just what the plants on his 125 acres did. Murillo’s agave plants have a far more complex root system than one will find at most agave farms. “Those roots not only bring up that humidity and moisture, but they bring up trace elements of minerals from the soil,” Murillo said. “This adds to the complexity of our agave, and then to our tequila.”

June 2012

But it’s not just a matter of planting agave, a plant closer to the lily than the cactus in its origins, and watching it grow. “We keep very narrow rows, which look nice, but it also helps us because we don’t use a lot of mechanical equipment,” Murillo said. “The only thing we do with the weeds during the rainy season is mow them. That helps conserve the topsoil we have, and then we plow it under, which adds more nutrients to the soil.” There are also cattle that wander the ranch. While the animals feed on some of the agave leaves, they also provide weed control and naturally fertilize the soil. Harvesting is done by hand using a tool called a coa, a rounded blade that requires mastery in order to quickly dispatch the leaves from the agave fruit. When the job is done, the final product resembles a large pineapple. From there, it’s off to the distillery where the fruit is first cooked, then distilled. The same naysayers wondered how big the agave plants could get without chemical fertilizers. The answer comes in the form of a record breaking 304pound plant. That’s not the norm; the plants usually grow to between 60 and 70 pounds. But the organic and sustainable farm’s yield is still larger than most agave farms and the sugar content, which measures between 20 and 25 brix in most agave fields, averages 44.5 brix on Murillo’s ranch, a number unheard of in Jalisco agave fields. “When we increase the microbiologic activity in the soil, the agave simply grows healthier,” he said. Murillo produces three different tequilas, all bottled in recycled glass crafted by a local blower near Arandas in Jalisco and all made from 100 percent pure organically grown agave, certified by the U.S.D.A. Blanco is clear in color

and distilled, then bottled; reposado ages for six months in white oak barrels that Murillo purchases from the Jack Daniels Company; añejo ages for nearly three years in those same barrels, and extra añejo rests for six years. In the process of sustainably raising agave and making a top-shelf tequila, the Murillos have brought practices to Jalisco that have defied the odds while providing jobs for a small, poor town in Mexico. They’ve used their cattle to improve the beef herds in the area, taught the local farmers how to grow crops without chemical fertilizers, brought attention to artisan glass blowers, and proved that the conventional wisdom is conventionally wrong. Leave it to the optometrist to help people see the future. v

DON’T SHOOT! Top-shelf tequilas are for sipping, not slamming. Añejo: a sipping liquor that stays on the palate. With bright aromas of butterscotch and vanilla, the añejo has layers of pepper, crème brûlée, and citrus notes. A draped and even finish lasts for minutes. Blanco: an ideal mixer that Dr. Murillo says can also be enjoyed neat. This is the one Lupe blends with fresh juices and an organic sweetener to give her crisp, citrusy margaritas a silky smooth finish. June 2012

Or, should I just keep quiet for fear that hearing about my wonderful adventure will only make them feel worse? No kidding, I not only LOVE my new kitchen—I actually enjoyed the experience of creating it. Brenda & Rory started when they said they would, finished when they said they would—and they seemed to have screened their subcontractors on the basis of personality, as well as skill and reliability. I had expected to feel “violated” from having a stream of workers in and out of my house, but instead I was a bit sorry to see them go when they were finished. The result is a thing of beauty that I never get tired of living in—or showing off!” Whether you are looking for traditional design or contemporary, or maybe something in between, Midtown Kitchens  an help you

nyone exposed to television advertising during the ‘80s remembers the landmark spot. A surreal graphic landscape of piano keys fills the frame while the background soundtrack plays “I Want to Set the World on Fire,” by the Ink Spots. A slow dissolve reveals a wide shot of a jetliner’s reflection climbing the face of the Transamerica building, that glorious San Franciscan pyramid. Fade to black. “Charles,” says a masculine voice. “Katherine,” replies the voice-over dialogue seductively. “Do you mind if I ask you a personal question?” She saunters slowly toward camera on an invisible catwalk, with sophisticated poise, dressed to the nines in a classically tailored crimson suit. “No, what is it?”

Then the close-up: dreamy eyes, glossy red lips open in slow motion. The tag line captures the essence. Share the Fantasy, Chanel no. 5. “Katherine” is actually Carolina Gramm, the beauty behind the blockbuster ad campaign that rocked the ‘80s and put Ridley Scott on the map as an A-list commercial director just after he formed the production company RSA. The spot ran for years. Back in the days of healthy residuals, it was nothing short of a cash cow for all the commercial talent that booked the gig. Cut to the present. From her residential villa tucked away in the hills of Upper Ojai, the supermodel-turned-interior designer is remarkably laidback. “I can’t find my hairbrush today. I think my son must have taken it,” she says, referring to her June 2012 | ventana | 35

She doesn’t bother with much makeup, favoring a more natural, organic look, and her attention to fashion and design is geared toward architectural projects and the luxurious fabrics she uses to dress sofas and chairs. 16-year-old, who is still at school. Laughing, she twists shoulder length chestnut brown hair into a clip at the base of her neck and plops easily into white linen cushions on the sofa that adorns the second story balcony overlooking the swimming pool. Despite her easygoing air, Carolina Gramm still carries herself with the elegant savoir-faire of an Elite model, a career that spanned a few decades beginning in her lateteens. But in these modern times, her attention to beauty has turned inside out. Now, she doesn’t bother with much makeup, favoring a more natural, organic look, and her attention to fashion and design is geared toward architectural projects and the luxurious fabrics she uses to dress sofas and chairs. Gramm’s home in Ojai—“Villa DeLa Roche,” reads the stone tablet at the front gate—is her pride and joy. She and her husband, Jack, a retired racecar driver and airline pilot, purchased the property in 2001. The original owners had designed the structure to replicate a villa at St. Jean Cap-Ferrat, on the French Riviera. And though its footprint remains unchanged, Gramm incorporated the perfect details to transform it into a Renaissance-style villa that feels authentic. The color palette incorporates the holy trinity of classic tones: ochre, umber, and sienna, the chromatic blueprint of 15th century Italian architecture. Outside, thick vines of bougainvillea exploding in color define the trellised arches that form a portico under the balcony. Classic Mexican pavers flow inside and out, a floor plan that invites dining and entertaining al fresco.

Inside the residence, Gramm paid special attention to maintaining the original esthetic whenever possible—as long as it was worth saving. “The hardware on the main doors is the same, it works just fine,” she points out as an example. When asked how she approaches furnishings and interior décor, Gramm bursts out laughing and points to a chair with a circular back. “I found that chair on the side of the road. It was just sitting there; I felt sorry for it,” she says. “I’m a scavenger. Someone made that chair, so I picked it up, polished it off, and delivered it to L.A. to be recovered. There it is, good as new. Everything I find has a memory attached and a story.” Nearby, a rectangular wooden box with short legs serves as a coffee table and holds a collection of art books and magazines. “I found that in a small shop in the Hudson Valley,” she tells me. “It was once a child’s bed, but I decided it would make a better table. So where the mattress was, I put books and magazines.” Indeed, Gramm has an eclectic design sense about her, a culmination of a past deep-rooted in European culture. “I was raised in Italy, in Bressanone, and I have always loved architecture,” she explains, her accent laced with multi-cultural threads. “I grew up in the mountains, just below the ski lift,” she adds, sounding more German than Italian. Bressanone sits in the foothills below the Italian Alps and the Dolomites in the northern region of Alto Adige. The area was ceded to Austria in 1918. Not surprisingly, in this area of Italy, German is spoken as commonly as native Italian. “Unfortunately, I don’t

speak much [Italian] anymore,” Gramm laments. “But, I am happy my son is learning Spanish in school; I want him to be bilingual.” It was a long road that led Gramm to America, following a challenging, somewhat turbulent youth. “I began working when I was 13, as a hairdresser. I worked six days a week, Monday to Saturday,” she says, reminiscing. “It was very hard, but then I got discovered by Gianni Versace, when I went to Portofino one weekend with a friend.” Gramm describes the life-changing event with an air of nonchalance: “Versace hired me on the spot and gave me a solid two months of work for his new line. He liked me because I could do many hairstyles, since we did not have a hairstylist on the job.” After that, Gramm traveled to England to hone her English language skills. But she “didn’t make it to many classes because the agency found me and gave me more [modeling] work. I worked every day after that.” Eventually she ended up in New York City, where she met her husband, Jack, who was also modeling at the time. “I met him through a photographer friend who was shooting a test. He was a racecar driver, and to support himself he did modeling on the side.” After apartment living in New York, the couple bought a country house and Carolina fell in love with antiquing. When her purchases began to over-

flow the space, it was time to go into business; there just wasn’t enough room to store all the collectables. Gramm partnered with a fellow designer, and together they opened an antique store under the name Gramm and Ivy. The business lasted a little over a year, until her partner adopted a baby and found that the combination of business and parenthood “was just too much.” After that, Gramm got into interior design, working with realtors, decorating model homes. “We bought another country house, and I designed that too,” she says. “I put in 28 antique wooden doors and cherry wood floors. We sold it to Roy Lichtenstein’s son. But one day it burned down.” And then she got pregnant. Shortly thereafter, Jack’s job as a G5 pilot led the family to California—and eventually to Ventura County and Villa DeLa Roche, where a new life chapter began. Currently, Gramm works with clients on both coasts as she juggles interior design and family responsibilities. Her passion for architecture and creative design is rooted in her childhood, she says. “I learned to work hard when I was very young, and I have always been stubborn, which I think is a good thing. It helps you to never give up.” v

Generations This month I’m featuring a design that my right hand guy, John Muscarella, did for one of our clients. The diamonds came from the client’s grandmother. The original ring was very worn and not a style that the clients fiance’ would wear. So we did a redesign to make it into a contemporary “trellis” style. She loved it!

We work with your gems and we have a great selection of diamonds available. So why just pick from the case when you can have what is really your style?
