O

A Simple Mission One of my clearest childho od memories is a feeling: I was always supremely confident that whatever went down, no matter how drastic the situation, I could easily live off the land. Call it childhood naivety, but considering the surroundings it made some sense. To me, everything west of Camarillo State Hospital (now CSUCI) looked like a salad bar. This was the Land of Plenty, with mountains plunging into the sea and a free buffet of agricultural flatlands. Running away would be a piece of cake. Not to hop trains or join the circus, mind you. No, I’d stay right here in Ventura County and eat. That was back in the seventies. I’ve matured very little since then, just enough to realize our local bounty is not up for grabs. Still, it shocks me to think that one in six people around here—one of the most food-abundant regions in the world—go hungry. What I find even more shocking is that the number exceeds our national average. Consider the irony: We’re the sixth wealthiest county in the famous “Golden State,” a county blessed with a temperate climate, miles of coast, a couple of islands, and perfect growing soil. Yet more people go hungry here than in backwaters where kids run

away to join the circus. To be sure, the numbers are disheartening. But our aim in presenting an interview with Bonnie Weigel, the new CEO of FOOD Share (cover and p. 31), isn’t to point out a dark cloud hovering over Ventura County. Rather, it’s to put a face on the solution—and if solution is too strong a word, call it good intent. Of course good intent doesn’t feed the hungry. My wife founded a successful nonprofit foundation and I’ve seen firsthand that philanthropy is a demanding line of work. An unfortunate reality of the business is that many wellmeaning charities devolve into thorny tangles of donated money and clashing ideas about how to use that money. There’s no avoiding the perpetual hunt for funds. But as a nonprofit, FOOD Share has something extremely vital going for it: the purity of its mission. It exists to feed people. Simple as that. The way neighbors have helped neighbors since the dawn of humankind. No, philanthropy is not an easy business, particularly in bleak economic times. But I get the sense that Bonnie Weigel has the right combination of communication skills and good intentions to make a real difference with FOOD Share. And though I haven’t seen it, I’d be willing to bet she has a Rolodex the size of a phonebook. We live in an imperfect world, but in a helluva good place, with a lot of great people. Vino V

Winemaker Michael Meagher has a love of wine that goes back some 25 years. It all started in 1984 while working at Trader Joe's in Ventura, where he met his wife, Anita. Every Friday, their employer had them taste wine. At the time, Michael was pursuing other interests at Ventura College, but the wine steered him in a new direction. "I actually changed majors because of it,” he says. “It seemed like a great way to live.” Meagher set off to attend U.C. Davis where, in 1990, he received his degree in oenology. Soon he was making wine in the Santa Cruz hills at Mount Eden Vineyards. In 1998 he returned to Ventura County, and in 2000 took a job working for five harvests with Adam Tolmach of The Ojai Vineyard. He developed an appreciation for small lot, high-end, handcrafted wines, but longed to have his own label. "In 2004, I was looking for a place to make my wine," says Meagher, adding, “At some point you just say, ‘I gotta do this.’” Eventually, he talked to John Whitman of Old Creek Ranch Winery in Ojai, who made him a generous offer to house his operations on the property. The partnership recently led to another opportunity when Whitman’s winemaker retired; Meagher now serves double-duty as Old Creek’s winemaker. With few grapes grown in Ventura County, mostly because of the region’s susceptibility to the devastation of Pierce’s disease (which wiped out all of Old Creek’s vines), Meagher started buying chardonnay, syrah, and pinot noir grapes from Santa Barbara County. He soon created the Vino V label—V standing for Ventura. Looking back on his decision, he thinks out loud, “It's the dream you always have." Today, he is producing some 500 cases a year and his wine is getting noticed, mostly through word of mouth because he doesn’t have a distributor. "It's a real trip with selling wine … I have so much respect for salespeople,” says Meagher. He sells to his private mailing list and upscale restaurants including Brooks in Ventura, Spago in Los Angeles, and Bouchon in Santa Barbara.

Meagher’s signature winemaking is more artistic than scientific; it’s all about individuality and the process he loves, which favors quality over quantity. PHOTO BY GARY AND PIERRE SILVA

Last fall, Vino V was the featured wine at an Outstanding in the Field event at Earthtrine Farm in Ojai. The highly regarded international event partners foodies with farmers, chefs, and winemakers. Being selected to provide wine to match the food of chef Josh Brown, who runs the kitchens at two of Santa Barbara’s best restaurants—Bouchon and Seagrass—proved that Vino V had arrived. During the growing season, Meagher makes frequent trips to see how the grapes are faring and talk with the growers. He gets involved and gets his hands dirty. “You have to,” he says. “I’ve really learned that there’s so much you can do in the vineyard that determines what you see in the bottle.” When it’s time to harvest, it becomes a family affair. "Our vacations are work," he says, recalling a 4 a.m. wakeup call when he, Anita, their nine-year-old son, and five-year-old daughter went to pick grapes. “Last year, [our son] Jack helped pick this chardonnay,” he says, holding up a bottle made from grapes grown at Solomon Hills Vineyard, a spot he chose because of its cool climate and ideal location in the westernmost part of the Santa Maria Valley. The food-friendly finished product was aged for 17 months—half in oak, half in stainless steel—resulting in a well-rounded chardonnay displaying aromas of toast, apple, and citrus. The wine Meagher is most proud of, though, is his syrah, from White Hawk Vineyard in the northern Santa Ynez Valley near Los Alamos— another location with a relatively cool climate. “It’s a really special vineyard,” he says. Aged for 20 months, this beautiful, inky red is spicy with pepper and blue fruits. Meagher’s signature winemaking is more artistic than scientific; it’s all about individuality and the process he loves, which favors quality over quantity. "I like balance, something more restrained, lower in alcohol," he says. Looking ahead to his next bottling, Meagher is focused. "I want to make really distinct, amazing wine," says the winemaker, who is proud of his accomplishments thus far. "It takes a lot of work to do it—and I do it. You can taste it in the wine." v

The Pool of Lorenzo

Balancing culture and leisure, a weary traveler discovers the cure for Stendhal’s Syndrome at a luxe Tuscan spa.

A

BY CAROL STIGGER After Venice-Verona-Bologna-Pisa-Assisi-Florence, my clothes were dirty, my feet were whining, and famous works of art and architecture were so jumbled in my mind I no longer knew Boticelli from Bellini. Stendhal’s syndrome—sickened by beauty—had struck in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, leaving me dizzy and overwhelmed. I did not go on to the Pitti Palace, for I could not absorb one more glorious painting, fresco, dome, bridge, or sculpture. I had a chocolate gelato and stared jealously at enthralled tourists who had paced themselves. With chocolate drips on my last clean shirt, I boarded the train for Siena. Two days later, I was slumped in Siena’s train station with a ticket to Rome in my hand, feeling like a survivor of a forced march through the Middle Ages. The shirt I had laundered with shampoo was damp and attracting gnats. I needed a vacation from my vacation before I could unpeel the layers of Rome, from Vatican City’s new regime to Etruscan artifacts. The Eternal City, my lifetime dream, the minutely researched and diligently planned two weeks of awe… I was awed-out. Thanks to a brochure at the train station, I arrived in Rome three days late but physically and mentally refreshed. It was a brochure about a spa in Tuscany claiming to be the essence of peace and harmony. I am not a spa person. Where is the art, the architecture, the history? Spas are for people of leisure, not people with an annual vacation.

But maybe spas are also for the weary. I called Adler Thermae Spa, and in fluent English the hostess told me to get on the next train to Chiusi. A car would be waiting. The spa's driveway curves gently in Tuscany’s Orcia Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and out of sight of a lightly traveled country road a century removed from tour buses. Cars are parked underground like Industrial Age embarrassments. The spa was designed to have low impact on the environment and preserves the Tuscan vista with its villa design and gardens. Thermal springs flow down the hill behind the spa, filling a pond in the sauna complex and the swimming pool. A stream meanders through an exercise room with treadmills. I exchanged my dirty clothes for a terrycloth robe and slippers and was assured all I would need in the way of wardrobe were my bathing suit, robe, towels, and something casual to wear to dinner. Other guests, wearing robes and looking serene, sauntered past, their slippers whispering on polished wooden floors. After consulting with a spa director, I was scheduled for a manicure, two massages, and a dawn yoga session on the grounds of a nearby abbey. I declined the mud wrap, the algae wrap, and skin peelings both vigorous and gentle. The Etruscan mud bath was of historical interest, so I asked for an CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

explanation, not an appointment. Nurturing muds are used to massage different body parts, each mud beneficial in its own esoteric way. A Cleopatra milk and honey wrap sounded sticky. The evening primrose wrap was tempting, but it would leave me scrimping in Rome. The view from my terrace, bed, and bathtub was a masterpiece. Green fields sloped up hills topped with terra cotta smears of ancient towns. I did not need a guidebook to identify the master. Lying on the bed, I watched shadows and sun veil and reveal a castle on the hill. With no train to catch, no map to decipher, and no nagging itinerary, I continued to absorb the view while I soaked in a floral-scented bubble bath. The castle turned from ochre to purple to twinkles of light. From my lounge chair on the terrace, I watched the crescent moon scythe stars from its path. Instead of reading Dante, damp and creased in my backpack, I watched God compose a lyric. The next morning, I jumped into the indoor-outdoor pool, prepared for the shock of cold water. But the pool, filled by thermal springs, is heavenly warm. I floated to a waterfall, then on to one of the Jacuzzi coves. My bathing suit almost blew off, but the water jets straightened every kink in my spine and loosened muscles that had

been tourist-tensed for two weeks. I investigated the steam baths and saunas, and selected the olive wood sauna because it smelled so good. After my sauna, I could relax in a travertine grotto called the Philosopher’s Cave, on a waterbed in a silent, glass-walled room or beside the thermal where I stayed, with my feet in the water, until lunch. The harmony of bird song, waterfall, and thunk of a wooden waterwheel deepened my post-sauna daze. My 75-minute Watsu massage was described as “relaxing Shiatsu treatment in 95-degree Fahrenheit water.” It was in a private thermal pool with a thatched roof, and surrounded by flowers. My masseur was a young Italian who said that I must trust him and not do a thing; he would do it all. He kept my nose above water, and the massage gently worked all joints. He spun me around in various positions and floated me about, and sometimes I was simply weightless in the moist smell of roses. I tried to assign a number to Watsu on my personal pleasure scale—and then he massaged my toes. I had no more thoughts until he slowly seated me on an underwater ledge. I opened my eyes a few minutes later. He was shoulder high in water, hands tented beneath his chin. He bowed his head. I had nothing to say. I do not know a

word for giving birth to every worry I ever had. On my last day, my mystical dawn yoga session in the garden of an ancient abbey ended with a tour of the religious house that had sheltered medieval pilgrims on their way to Rome. Even so, I was feeling art and history deprived. I strolled 300 meters to Bagno Vignoni, population 35. The town square’s medieval and renaissance buildings face a thermal pool used since Etruscan times, a favorite of Lorenzo the Magnificent. I had seen his tomb in Florence. The marble statue by Michelangelo of Lorenzo with his finger crooked above his lips formed as clearly as a postcard. Was Lorenzo contemplating his next political coup, or a trip to Bagno Vignoni? I was surprised I remembered anything in Florence so clearly. Poetry is defined as “emotion recollected in tranquility.” Perhaps Stendhal would have written the same of art if he had recuperated like Lorenzo. The main village activity is soaking feet in a stream of thermal water while reading the newspaper or knitting, then having coffee at the village’s one bar. I waded down a thermal stream, sat on the bank, put

my feet in the stream, and collected more postcards from Florence. I walked around the village reading signs in four languages. Saint Catherine of Siena’s mother brought Catherine here to try to dissuade her from entering the convent. On the square is a shrine to Saint Catherine with fresh and wilting flowers pushed through the iron grill and strewn on the floor. I recalled seeing Catherine’s head in Siena. I remembered the rest of her bones are in Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome. According to my revised itinerary, I would tour that church right after visiting the Pantheon. I had an espresso at one of the coffee bar’s two outdoor tables and envisioned walking through the Forum, past Trevi Fountain, up and down the Spanish Steps, onto Piazza Navona, along the Tiber and to St. Peter’s Square. The peace and harmony promised by the brochure were not an exaggeration. I was rested, relaxed, and ready for Rome. The train leaves Chiusi Station every hour. It was time to move on. v For details about Adler Thermae Spa, log on to Adler-Thermae.com. MARCH 2009

FOOD Shar e’s B onnie Weigel and the ne w cultur e of philanthropy

BY MAXINE HURT PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID YAMAMOTO

Bonnie Weigel has a sp ecial relationship with the go od ear th of Ventura County. This has been her family’s home for three generations; her grandfather grew strawberries in the rich Oxnard soil, selling them at a stand just down the road from her new office, where she serves as CEO of the nonprofit organization FOOD Share. Indeed, she has a special relationship with the land. But lately she’s been tilling the community, harvesting relationships while managing the Strawberry Festival and editing Skirt! magazine. Now in a position to serve Ventura County’s hungry (yes, they do exist), Weigel has unearthed a cornucopia of support for a cause that feeds the heart and soul of our community.

Bonnie Weigel: Ten years ago when I was looking at nonprofits, I thought, FOOD Share is really the queen bee; I'd love to do something at that level. Fast forward and I'm offered the position. My first thought, knowing the economy, was, What is it going to be like to take that on and lead that team? Then I realized it really had nothing to do with me, that it was beyond me. I had to look at the bigger picture. I'm just a small part of the puzzle, but if I could help then I was all for it. I u n d e r s t a n d y o u d i d n ' t h a v e a ny e x p e r i e n c e i n f o o d b a n k i n g. W h a t a t t r a c t e d y o u t o t h i s e n d e av o r ? It’s a very basic mission—taking care of somebody by feeding them. And we know from looking at social issues that when you feed someone, many other problems go away. I think it was that purity of mission that drew me to it. It really is the foundation of so many other solutions.

No small operation, FOOD Share’s warehouse in Oxnard (above) is stacked floor to ceiling and the organization depends on hundreds of volunteers (left) every month.

I s t h e r e a c o n n e c t i o n b e t we e n t h e wo r k y o u d o n o w a n d w h a t y o u di d as a m a g az i ne edi t or or m an a g e r o f t h e S t r a w b e r r y Fe s t i v a l ? Yes, relationships. It all goes back to relationships. You've heard about six degrees of separation? Well in Ventura County, it's more like three degrees. I think the relationships you form all through the different phases of your professional career come back full circle. I'm talking to colleagues I haven't spoken to in 15 years who are saying, Bonnie, we've read you're at FOOD Share. I want to help. What can I do? H o w w o u l d y o u d e s c r i b e t h e c ur r e nt s t at e o f p h il an t h ro py ? There is a new idea in the culture of philanthropy. We are not looking to Corporate America anymore to solve our problems. We know they are a part of the solution—but they are not the solution. It is up to us to look out for each other and take care of one another.

“There is a new idea in the culture of philanthropy. We are not looking to Corporate America anymore to solve our problems... It is up to us to look out for each other and take care of one another. ”

I t s oun d s like you’r e describ ing a n ation al m ov emen t towa rd comm u n i t y - o r i e n t e d p h i l a n t h r o p y. The Obamas have been really involved in looking at how society comes together to make things stronger. I don't know if it was the timing of the elections, but I think somehow the message was delivered through his whole campaign using viral marketing. It’s no different for nonprofits. I have been watching this trend for probably the last three years. Small businesses realize they are part of the bigger picture: if I donate a little money and everybody does too, then we have enough to take care of everyone. That's a big paradigm shift.

D e s c r i b e t he ne w f a c e . It can be our friends who we know are at a very low income level and need our help regularly—that's the basis of who we serve. But now we have this new layer. You can see the mom pull up in her Volvo, and she may not have extra money. She can barely make her mortgage payment. Her husband has possibly been laid-off, or she has. That's the new face we are seeing. I had an email from somebody saying, I used to be a donor and now you are helping me. I just want you to know how grateful I am. That puts it in perspective.

H o w i s t h e c u r r e n t e c o n o m y g o i n g t o a f f ec t F O O D S h a r e ? We know we are going to have to serve more people than ever. That's where we've reached out to collaborative partnerships. We have joined efforts to create Ventura County Together, which is a collaborative group of nonprofits. We find that we are serving the same clients, whose needs are food, healthcare, and shelter. Why not work together and help them? The whole idea is one neighborhood at a time—just take care of what is in your backyard. Do a food drive for your street.

W h a t h av e yo u l e a r n e d a b o u t h u n g e r ? When you feed a person, there is so much more that you are giving them beyond nourishment. You are giving them back a part of their dignity. You are giving them their health. You are giving them hope. Not only are you getting food out to a client, you are helping them feel like somebody cares, that they matter. [Hunger] is definitely the root of a lot of different things, like health care. If your kids aren't getting the right nutrition, what's that going to cost? Even adults are going to get sick, and then they get secondary diseases. If they get sick, they can't work. If they can't work, they can't support their families. So you see how hunger is at the core.

Woul d p eop le in Vent u ra Coun t y b e s ur p r i sed at the a mount of thei r n e i g h b o rs who g o hu n gr y ? I know I was. Brand new to the food bank industry, I knew we had a need. But I didn't realize that nationwide the statistics are one in eight, and here it's closer to one in six. When you are looking at friends in line at the grocery store, just think: one out of every six people there is hungry right now, or they are ‘hunger insecure’—by that we mean they are going to be thinking soon about where their next meal will come from. And the face is different. It's not who we think.

W h a t w o u l d s u r p r is e p e o p l e a b ou t F OO D S h a r e ? I have a fresh set of eyes, since it's only been 60 days. How well we work with our volunteer base was a surprise. I don't think people understand that we have about 320 volunteers every month working with our staff of about 24. Or that we feed 40,000 people every month. When you realize that, you get a sense of the operation. The volunteer aspect is huge. Some people have been here 20 years. I was also surprised that we work with so many other organizations. There are over 150 partners we work with: all nonprofits, from the Red Cross to this tiny little church pantry.

W h a t d o yo u d o w h e n y o u a r e no t wo r k i n g ? It's all about our two daughters; they are the center of our world. We also love to be on the water and with our horses. Living here in Ventura County, I want to be outside as much as I can. We like to spend our time out at the ranch or on the water. And I love to cook and have tons of people in the house. It goes back to food and relationships. v

VENTURA FILM FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT FILM March 26 | The Elks Lodge Thy Will be Done, a world premiere feature documentary by Ventura

filmmaker Jacob Cunningham, will be the opening night film of the 2009 Ventura Film Festival. The film is part historical documentary and part Cinema Verite, and tells the story of Kevin Natale, who lived a BradyBunchesque childhood in the suburbs of Ventura. He was an energetic kid; he came home dirty; he got sunburned; he played Tee Ball; he wasn't in a gang or mixed up in drugs; he was, for lack of a better word, normal. Until one day a violent act changed his life forever. This is a story of hope, tragedy, addiction, friendship, faith, serenity, forgiveness, compassion, and ultimately the power of family love. 11 S.
