MR. BLACKWELL’S NIGHTMARE

Don’t ask me about fashion. Like a lot of men, I don’t do fashion; I wear clothes. My wife recently complimented me on something she called my “look.” I was wearing jeans and an untucked shirt. And shoes. Apparently it’d been a while since I’d gotten so duded up. As an editor I’ve long avoided the topic. Not because it isn’t a good editorial fit. Done well, fashion pictorials are dazzling—a hallmark of glossy mags everywhere. It’s the other part that had me reticent: the possibility of an utter fiasco, the editorial equivalent of socks and sandals, dark underwear and white pants. You may think I’m damning fashion with faint praise here. That I’m about to say, “I’d rather watch a dog show than a fashion show.” I’m not. I do love dogs. And maybe I would be more comfortable at the Westminster than the catwalks of Milan or Paris. But I’m not about to wag a finger at fashion. If you’ve gotten this far you’ve noticed our cover. Striking, yes? Now flip to page 38, the start of a knockout spring fashion pictorial. Don’t look at me. I was just a bystander. A fashion bush leaguer who turned to someone better and brighter to address the question of couture. Thank Naz Madean of Ventura-based MBN Productions. She rounded up the models and photographers, the hair stylists and set designers. She jumped through a narrow window of opportunity at Rubicon Theatre, coordinating a shoot even as they set the stage for Master Harold … and the Boys. And then she did it again: outdoors at Hartley Botanica, a wholesale nursery and garden in Somis, with a different crew and a two-day break in the weather between Santa Ana winds and a winter storm.

Fashion, it turns out, is tiring. No place for an elder. Unless you’re David Elder (page 17), who, at age 74, has been carving the fashion of the day for decades. We tend to think of fashion as a young person’s game. But here’s a keen septuagenarian, and he took his cue from the ancient Greeks, who transformed the vogue of antiquity into sculptures thousands of years before Mr. Blackwell and his scandalous lists. Perhaps it’s the models thrust upon the consumptive masses (and their credit cards): youthful clothes hangers, ever in fine fettle, the lines of character airbrushed from their faces. Or those clothing stores run by Facebook-addled clerks, their T-shirts emblazoned with ironic slogans. For myriad reasons, it’s easy to overlook the legitimate artistry of fashion. To think of it as trifling. To be sure, fashion isn’t for everyone. My own closet would make Mr. Blackwell’s pen drip with urgency. Naz Madean, on the other hand, probably thinks clothes have a life of their own, that shoes talk to each other and dresses dance when the door is shut. Somewhere in the middle of the spectrum—between haute couture and socks with sandals—there is style, which has nothing to do with the overt branding of logo tees or pushing the envelope at Paris Fashion Week. In the end, style is about rolling with the look that’s right for you. And above all, not taking yourself so seriously. Still, I’d think twice about dark underwear with white pants. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

6 Four Star Theater Awards Ventura County’s Take on the Tonys All six of Ventura County’s non-union theaters came together to celebrate their 2010 seasons at the Four Star Theater Awards, a local version of the Tony Awards. The alliance emphasizes cooperation, as theaters from Thousand Oaks to Ojai advertise each other’s shows, lend props and costumes, and reach out to an expanding list of talented actors. The award process is by consensus: Three representatives from each theater attend all the plays at another theater. Categories are not “Best,” but “Outstanding,” and range from Outstanding Lead Performance to technical talents in lighting, sound, and costuming, plus a wild card called “Judges’ Choice.” The theaters are Camarillo Community Theatre (CCT), Elite Theatre Company of Oxnard (ETC), High Street Arts Center in Moorpark (HSAC), Ojai Art Center Theater (Ojai ACT), Santa Paula Theater Center (SPTC), and Conejo Players Theater (CPT).

Respect Your Elders

Inside Crystal Hawk—the Ventura home of artists David and Linda Elder—where ancient cultures and cutting edge fashion collide on a timeless meeting ground.

T

BY MARK STORER PHOTOS BY GARY AND PIERRE SILVA THE ROAD TO CRYSTAL HAWK IS A PILGRIMAGE ROAD. It snakes its way just north of the Seaward off ramp and rises slowly above Ventura, revealing shrubs, flowers, and greenery, masking the railroad thoroughfare that frequently echoes and booms with freight and passengers. Crystal Hawk is the home of artists David and Linda Elder, a custom-built abode with sweeping views over Grant Park and the Santa Barbara Channel. In the couple’s living room window, the islands of Anacapa and Santa Cruz appear as a framed painting. It is David’s own artwork, however, that dominates most of the space in and around the house. As a sculptor, he is fascinated, some may say obsessed, with fashion and the female form. Rows of headless torsos draped with clothing representative of distinct eras, dating back to the 1970s, stand sentinel at Crystal Hawk. In the backyard, a symmetrical line of more than 20 such life-sized torsos is arranged along the sidewalk and patio. Working mostly with hand tools, Elder spends up to 10 hours a day in the studio. “I’m pretty constant about that,” he said, revealing a fascination with fashion that, at age 74, is as strong as ever. “The Greeks were carving the fashion of their day,” he said. “So I decided to start carving the fashion of our day.” A lifelong interest in Greek sculpture and art has provided ample inspiration for him. Whether carving out of wood, working

in bronze or other metals or even plastics, David’s work has appeared in countless galleries across the United States. He’s even featured in a series of short films at the Getty Museum where he and others explain how metal casting and bronze casting were done by ancient cultures: “There’s me in those films—bald-headed and working the foundry.” Foundry work has been a mainstay of David’s artistic diet. He taught sculpture, three-dimensional drawing, and architectural drawing for years at Cal State Northridge. That’s how he made a living and afforded a growing family of five boys. “I love working the foundry,” he said. “That big throaty roar of the furnace, it’s all very tangible.” Fashion and human forms are everywhere at Crystal Hawk. Linda, too, has an artistic interest, carving life-sized female forms, including Chumash Indian women. But the magazines in the mailbox are addressed to David. “It’s embarrassing,” said Linda. “He gets Victoria’s Secret and other ladies’ magazines. He flips through them to find what he likes.” In the small library, more than 20 such pieces of ladies fashion, carved into wood and painted as they appear in photographs, adorn the walls and floors. Outside, one piece is an entire rack carved from wood, as though customers could pull off a garment and take it to the cash register. MARCH 2011

These carvings are part of “Elder’s Fashions.” Top center: Linda utilized resin in this transparent abstract of the female form. Crystal Hawk itself is merely a repository for daily and constant creations coming out of the couple’s studio, a circular building adjacent to the garage that sits closest to the street. “We took the aesthetic position that we were from Barcelona,” said David. “We’ve been displaced to California and built the main part of the house accordingly.” Though not Spanish themselves, David points out the windows on the second story, which are shaded by jutting and pointed features from the roof. Stained glass windows that David made adorn the front door and other key spots as well. “But then we found out the house sits on a Chumash meeting ground,” said Linda. “They said that it was an equal place and that harmony reigned here.” Linda surveys the ground as though in spiritual agreement with the Chumash. “We had Julie Tumamait, a Chumash Indian who is here locally, come and bless the place,” Linda said. “She told us the story of the ground and it was astounding. We feel like it’s sacred, too.” On the property stood a 110-year-old Cyprus tree that eventually developed Cyprus-canker and had to be removed. A hawk that lived in the tree seemed to bless the property by its presence, according to the Elders. The day the tree was removed, the hawk came back and sat in the branches once more while workmen prepared to cut it down. “We felt like it was saying its goodbyes,”

march 2011

said David. “So the positive energy, the Chumash stories, all are reflected in the name of the house.” Crystal Hawk is a mélange of things they love reflected in the land on which it is built. Upstairs one finds a single bedroom and large bath, while the downstairs entry gives way to a giant kitchen. “It’s where everyone in our family wants to be, so we made it the biggest room in the house,” said Linda. Even here in the breakfast nook, though, human form and fashion collide with a wall of pop culture icons like old Coca-Cola signs and children’s toys. Here, the art world gets turned on its head as the two living artists provide classical pieces while purchases and non-original works are the more modern examples. Classical works of art created by the Elders litter the floor, tables, and walls. The more one looks, the more draped dresses, female forms, and eras of clothing one sees. They aren’t alone in this obsession, either. David’s delicately dressed torsos just finished a three-week run at SCIART studio in Camarillo. Called “Classical Contemporary,” David’s ladies shared the space with artist Russell McMillin’s work, which focused more on antiquity. Art at its best turns us inward to examine ourselves—and outward to examine our world. By using the past for inspiration, the Elders have provided small windows glimpsing into the future. v

Classical works of art created by the Elders litter the floor, tables, and walls. The more one looks, the more draped dresses, female forms, and eras of clothing one sees.

The World Interwoven Soft like cashmere, cool as silk, an Ojai company specializing in high-end scarves thrives on an international blend of luxe fabrics and spiritual connections. By Allison Costa

T

The firstborn son after four daughters, Shai Ardebilchi was named for the Hebrew and Sanskrit word meaning “gift.” When the time came to name his Ojai-based company, Shai put forth a similar intention, naming it Shai Shanti, or “gift of peace.” A petite man with a ponytail, wire-rimmed glasses, and the longest eyelashes you’ve ever seen, 36-yearold Shai has an air of tranquility. His mother is from Afghanistan, his father from Iran. Yet he was born in Israel. After being drawn to Ojai by a calling to the Ojai Foundation 10 years ago, Shai never left. He frequently uses words like thread, weaving, and unfolding in conversation, hinting at a life that revolves around both fabric and a deep sense of spirituality. Shai Shanti offers a broad selection of unique highend scarves and wraps, from faraway places like India, China, Mongolia, Korea, Israel, and Nepal. Available mostly in specialty boutiques and yoga stores here in the U.S., they are made of fine gauge cashmere, warm merino wool, and cool silk—fabrics that long to be touched and yearn to be wrapped around the neck or shoulders. As we chat over a cup of coffee, Shai proudly

unfolds a hand-painted cashmere scarf from Mongolia, spun so thin it is almost translucent. A purple wool scarf from India graduates from light lavender on one end to a dark purple on the other. A wool and silk blend scarf from China integrates a tie-dye design. An emerald green merino wool scarf from India is hand-embroidered and beaded with a delicate star pattern. Shai travels to Hong Kong four times a year, seeking out fabrics that speak to him. After researching the finest fabrics and reliable sources, he says, “I start walking and follow my nose to find things.” In his sources, he looks for people with whom he resonates: “people who walk on the spiritual path.” On his most recent trip, to attend Hong Kong Fashion Week, Shai met a group of Korean women who produce their own line of scarves. “I loved their stuff and their energy,” he says. Following his instinct, working only with those whom he finds a spiritual connection—this is Shai’s atypical approach to business. He tells stories of exploring markets, like one in Northern China close to Shanghai—a market dedicated to scarves and fabric and so large it covers 10 blocks.

Top left: Ten percent of Shai Shanti’s online sales go to the Tribal Trust Foundation, which works with indigenous cultures such as the San Bushmen of southern Africa. Above: The Ojai business is built on direct connections with artisans like these Indian men, seen selecting threads to weave on a traditional handloom and doing embroidery and beadwork. Opposite: Ojai’s Chaya Cuenot wraps herself in a Shai Shanti merino wool scarf, hand-embroidered with traditional Indian motifs and beadwork.

“Buying becomes a connection I’m weaving with artists from around the world. I bring their gifts back here, and through that I empower them. It becomes something bigger.” Often through a translator, he selects small quantities from different sellers (keeping in mind that his customers prefer one-of-a-kind pieces), filling suitcase after suitcase with what he calls “luxe” fabrics. When asked how he discerns the quality of a fabric, he says, “The fingers ... You develop touch.” Yet Shai Shanti is about more than this purchasing process. “We’re not just buying and selling products ... Buying becomes a connection I’m weaving with artists from around the world,” explains Ardebilchi. “I bring their gifts back here, and through that I empower them. It becomes something bigger.” Shai recently bridged a partnership with the Tribal Trust Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving indigenous communities by supporting their culture and traditional way of life. Barbara Savage, the organization’s founder, is also a buyer for the Museum Store at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. After purchasing Shai Shanti scarves for the store, a friendship bloomed, as did conversations about the impact Shai Shanti could have sourcing handmade items from around the world. Consequently, 10 percent of Shai Shanti’s online sales now go to support the Tribal Trust Foundation. As is the case in the most ideal of partnerships, Barbara and Shai seem to share a mutual adoration. “I enjoy supporting his work because he is … really conscious,” says Barbara. “I love that he is so spiritually tuned in.” Shai likes to call his company a social entrepreneurship. When asked about this, he explains, “It’s about bringing awareness to an environment, supporting small communities of artists, trying to minimize mass production, and working more directly with small production.” Looking ahead, he plans to introduce a yoga apparel line, more organic fabrics, and all-natural dyes. He also hopes to travel more and meet the people who produce his fabrics—to connect to more communities on a grassroots level. “This company of mine, it’s still a baby,” he says. “It’s just now taking its first steps.” v For more information about Shai Shanti, go to shaishanti.com or call 805-754-9655. You can learn more about the Tribal Trust Foundation online at tribaltrustfoundation.org. The Chaya Zahav scarf is 100 percent viscose and features a paisley print.

Lose 1 to 2 Pounds of FAT Per Day With Safe, Effective, Natural Weight Loss. It’s as Easy as 1 ... 2 ... 3 ... ARE YOU SERIOUS ABOUT LOSING WEIGHT?

You can virtually melt away your FAT without strenuous dieting or excessive exercising. This is the best weight loss secret to come along in years - when you’re talking about FAST EFFECTIVE weight loss.

HOLD ON!!!

You might be afraid the “solution” will be worse than the problem, but let me assure you, it’s not! When you schedule an appointment you’re going to receive something that NOT only helps you lose weight, but also helps your appearance, your face, your complexion and even your body structure. Listen, I am a regular practicing doctor in Ventura, and I love helping people, just like you, lose that stubborn weight, without dieting, and then how to keep it off - permanently.

SAFE & EASY!

My exclusive weight loss management system is completely SAFE and has been proven to work. It is based on scientific principles that cause almost immediate changes and is strictly administered along common sense protocols. Here’s what most people don’t understand. When you’re heavy, you lose your strength, vitality, and you can become feeble. And on top of that you can age prematurely because your “fat” cells clog your body’s vital organs. That will change after you start utilizing this system. You may be like some people who have lost their figure due to this “fat” clogging weight gain.

The problem is, most overweight people are unable to find a simple, easy-to-follow system to reduce their fat and then keep it off. Even their coordination, daily movement and attractiveness are destroyed with this weight gain. That will all change when you start using this system.

Here is what I can do for you:

CALL the office NOW and schedule an appointment. You won’t have to make any radical changes in your lifestyle with this program, have surgery, or take any harmful drugs. Your treatments are private and you will start to lose 1-2 pounds per day, depending on your size, age, condition of your body and follow through. Once you’ve reached your desired weight, you’ll have your shape back, have more energy, and you’ll have your self-esteem back.

Doesn’t get any better than that!!

“Thank you Dr. Alff and Staff for introducing us to your Fat and Weight Loss Plan AND all the encouragement and support we received while on the program. We are still amazed at how the fat just seemed to melt off. Dave lost 22 pounds and I lost 14 pounds in 23 days. We look better, we feel better, and are enjoying our new nutritional awareness too! Thank you!” -Teddy Little, Camarillo

Long Live the Queen In the hills of Ventura, there lives a designer whose one-of-a-kind handbags are fit for royalty yet accessible to the masses. Meet Kristina Wilkov, a.k.a. the MidiQueen

P

By Andrea kitay Photos by Gary and Pierre Silva

Pawing through stacks of vintage upholstery at the local flea market, Kristina Wilkov, the owner and creative force behind Ventura-based MidiQueen Handbags, hears “Doooorieee,” a gentle ribbing not uncommon from her friends. A reference to the delightfully distracted character Dorie in Finding Nemo, she’s also known as The MidiQueen to customers who drop by her garage-studio at all hours to examine her latest inspirations. “It’s justified,” chuckles Wilkov, rubbing a sample of vintage upholstery as we stand in her sewing room. “I can get a little bored, which is why the fabrics are so fascinating to me.” Kristina’s house, a ranch-style abode in the hills of Ventura, is a whirlwind of colors, textures, and shapes. The property—which she shares with her husband, Jeff, and their daughters, Sydney and Logan—is strewn with evidence of her passion and business: designing one-of-a-kind handbags with vintage and vintage-inspired upholstery material. Even the

garage has been converted to a studio. This is no man cave. Shelves are lined with overflowing bins of muted neutrals, warm reds, and her customary, eye-popping turquoise. Racks of handbags organized by style take their place beside mannequins and flea market-style furniture piled with makeup bags, totes, and baskets of bling she uses to customize pieces. Although both her mother and grandmother were trained seamstresses (Wilkov’s mother churned out runway-quality garments for her in junior high school), she is not. “I’m a visual learner, so for me it’s more about cutting the fabric; for my mother, it’s about following the rules. I can’t do that.” Apparently, not following the rules is working. Wilkov’s vintage-inspired bags and her latest creation, the iPad sleeve, have earned something of a cult following. “I have eight of her handbags. I love them,” says Josie Ralstin, a neighbor and local businesswoman. I’ve given out tons of her makeup bags to cancer support groups, and they’re in heaven because each

one is individual, personal.” Wilkov claims it’s not the clean, simple lines but the fabrics that make the bags. If ever there were an accidental business, this is it. While experimenting with sewing handbags for holiday gifts in 2003, Wilkov found herself enthralled by texture, color, and the creative process itself. Word got around and she began to sell them a few at a time, the first step in a journey that’s led to sales to stores, at home parties, and online. For the first four years, she did all the sewing herself. “After four years, Jeff asked whether this was a business or a hobby, and I realized he was right. I couldn’t wear all the hats,” she says. So she hired a local sewer who now constructs the bags, leaving her time to create and refine the bags that will eventually go into production. “I buy fabrics that are only available in limited amounts, so each handbag is unique … Once a fabric is gone, it’s gone,” she says. Although MidiQueen handbags are sold in retail stores and online, the bulk of the business is through home parties held by Wilkov and her three salespeople. “I’m very involved with my daughters’ school, Ventura Charter School of Arts and Global Education, off Ventura Avenue, so it was important to develop the business in a way that would allow us to do home parties, leaving time for our families.” Handbags with

names like the Hannah Lee, the Logan, and the Sydney have been named after her own daughters and those of friends. “Home parties are a great way for us to achieve balance with work and family. We set up people’s houses like a boutique, and when guests walk in they’re almost overwhelmed. We create a colorful store, a fullblown thing. It’s very physical, but we pride ourselves on having unique displays and new, never-seen-before items.” Parties average 12 to 15 guests, and generally no one walks away without a bag. Despite a rough economy, MidiQueen’s growth doubled in 2010, probably because Wilkov keeps her products accessible and affordable, and her labor local. “My margins are low. I want everyone to be able to afford a MidiQueen bag, and yet still ensure the bags have a really cool, highend style,” says Wilkov. “We regularly donate to local causes for raffles and silent auctions.” While her success still surprises Wilkov, she isn’t rushing to jump on the QVC bandwagon. For now she’s happiest pattering around the house in sweats, creating samples for new creations, and watching the pleasure her products bring customers. v To learn more about MidiQueen handbags, visit midiqueenhandbags.com or facebook.com/ midiqueenhandbags.

Top, from left: Kristina Wilkov carries on a family tradition; her mother and grandmother were both trained seamstresses. She calls the Manhattan “a big city bag for a small town girl.” Customers can personalize their look with key fobs, purse holders, and pins. Handbags are named after the designer’s daughters, or in the case of this Lily clutch, the daughter of a friend. Right: Wilkov utilizes a variety of patterns, textures, and colors. Far right: The MidiQueen Princess brings a vintage dress form to life.

How were the political ideals of the Chicano Movimiento of the ‘60s and ‘70s transformed by succeeding artists in the ‘80s and ‘90s? How did Chicana/o art change as it moved from the streets to the galleries? How were artists energized by the emergence of feminism, postmodernism, and transnationalism? This talk considers these issues, as it attempts to demonstrate the rich diversity of Chicana/o cultural production. Free. 5 - 6 p.m. Roth Nelson Room. For more information, call 805.493.3512.

wedding bands wedding bands

Although we don’t stock a lot of wedding bands, we sure do sell a lot of them. Almost all of the wedding bands we sell are custom made for a particular client. Sometimes they are very plain, sometimes they are complex to the degree that you need a magnifier to see all the detail, most are in between. But each and every one of them was made just for that bride or groom and finished to the quality we are known for. Custom bands start around $300 and can go to wherever your dreams can take us. “We don’t copy what’s new, I create what’s next!” —Bob Lynn
