March Madness
W
elcome to March. I’d welcome you to “spring” but spring arrived in February this year. Which came as no surprise to me; I’ve gotten used to global weirdness: climatic wackiness, warming, whatever you want to call it. New York City flooded while we were locked down in a dry freeze. Our blossoms popped in the dead of winter. And next year, who knows? Certainly not the experts—most of them predicted a rainy 2012-2013. But chances are, it’ll be weird. So let’s forget about spring. Break out a pint glass and put on your best Irish brogue, because it’s March and nothing much happens in March besides St. Patrick’s Day. Yes, yes, I know it’s World Kidney Day on the second Thursday of the month. And of course Summer Day in Albania falls on March 14—which, by the way, is also Save a Spider Day. (I’m not making this up.) In other words, not much going on. My 101-year-old grandmother, an L.A. native, recently moved to Ventura. Feel up to a challenge? Try talking climate change with a centenarian. She looks at me like an owl eyeing a hobbled mouse, her blood pressure redlining. And she’s right. I am clueless. Who isn’t? Growing up in Ventura County of the ‘70s, I swung on a pendulum of floods and droughts, wildfires, mudslides, frog invasions. But now it’s really getting wild, I tell her. We’re approaching the tipping point. Runaway climate change. All over the world. She considers the catastrophic implications, then insists I take her to Danny’s Deli in Midtown for liver and onions. Conversation over. I also wasn’t terribly surprised to learn that the cousins behind friezeframes (p. 12) were gearheads. Sure they make fashion-forward eyeglass frames, an atypical pursuit for a couple of guys who started

their careers in the family muffler shop. But then, we recently featured a racecar driving designer of premium jeans, too. So Marc Franchi and Jason Stanley can tune a catalytic converter and turn out blingy eyewear in the same weekend. These days, particularly around this county, there’s nothing rare about the crossover between car junky and fashionista. It’s a good look, too, if you can pull it off. Comes naturally to some people—and apparently to some places. When I first contacted the Kelley twins, Martha and Christie, who co-own Gridley Ranch in Ojai, to gauge their interest in a Nesting article (p. 28), the first to reply applauded the work of the other. She, in turn, credited her sister. Fact is, they’re both remarkably creative and have lit up the property with their artistic spark. Now, I’ll be honest. I’d never heard of Martha or Christie Kelley. So I was pleasantly surprised when photos for our Style pictorial (p. 17) started to flow and, lo and behold, there were their names. But they’re not among the featured designers. Some of their work just happened to be exhibited in the space where our photographer was shooting and it added to the look. Unplanned props that fell right into our theme. So there you have it. Everything in this issue—clothing, jewelry, shoes, paintings, bikinis, surfboards, vintage-inspired marquee lights, and one-off lamps made from antique industrial leftovers—was handcrafted by a locally-based indie designer. And how much of a chore is it to wrangle designers of all stripes and coordinate three separate photo shoots? Ask Mariana Schulze. Until April... — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Carnevale Ventura
Renaissance Italy comes to town Inspired by the Historical Figures of George Stuart, Carnevale Ventura brought something of Renaissance Italy to modernday California. Participants dressed in period clothing and enjoyed a Renaissance Faire, costume fashion show, masked ball, and other colorful events. While the Renaissance period produced great strides in art, science, architecture, commerce, and politics, it was also a time of turbulence. Carnevale Ventura was intended to raise public spirits in our own turbulent times. To learn more, log on to carnevaleventura.org. Photos Above by Andrew Schmidt Photo at Left by Mary Harrsch

jewelry for the eyes Two cousins’ contemporary take on retro glam.
T
he words “vintage” and “retro” might come to mind when you see your first pair of friezeframes. Defined by their whimsical shapes, vibrant colors, sparkly bling, and pointy accents, each pair has its own unique flair. They’re the kind of frames that make people stop you on the street and ask, “Where did you get those glasses?!” Producing vintage-inspired eyewear here in Ventura County, friezeframes is making a name for itself via unusual designs and an unconventional approach to business. Run by cousins Marc Franchi and Jason Stanley, the company is based out of a 6,000-square-foot building in East Ventura, where all the business operations, design, manufacture, and shipping take place. Since 2009 the company has been progressing up the growth curve; it currently has a presence in 450 retail locations around the country. Each year, friezeframes releases 32 new styles, and they estimate sales between 12,000 and 18,000 pairs last year. Yet despite their growth, Franchi and Stanley still design each pair themselves; and though virtually unheard of in the industry, they start the process by making a wearable prototype instead of drafting designs on a computer. It can take their small production team anywhere from three to five hours to produce each pair, manually cutting them by machine, hand-sanding, and polishing each one.

By Allison Costa
“Most eyewear companies keep regurgitating the same styles,” says Franchi, explaining their approach to design. “We’ve made an effort to come out with the most unique, wearable, original shapes.” The cousins-turned-business partners see eyewear as the ultimate accessory, something that gives you the ability to make a statement, to get noticed, with something often considered purely utilitarian. “We could do more mainstream designs and appeal to a larger taste ... but then we would fall into that vanilla category that defines so many companies,” says Franchi. And to be sure, with styles like the Swarovski crystal bedazzled “Betty” and bamboo-stemmed “Hewood,” friezeframes is anything but bland. So how is it that these two self-proclaimed car guys came to be designing highend eyewear? The story begins with the two cousins growing up in the Bay area and eventually working together as teenagers in the family muffler shop. Over the years, Marc began a career of buying struggling businesses (he bought his first one at age 22) while Jason delved into banking and real estate. When Marc stumbled across an opportunity to buy a small eyewear company, in 2009, the duo decided to go into business together. Neither is formally trained as a designer, but both seem to have a designer’s touch: that ability to to see potential and create something out of nothing. Citing their background in automotive, Stanley explains, “It’s that mechanical background

... the way I’m built. It’s seeing something and knowing there’s a better way to do it.” A quick glance at their eyewear will tell you this is not a company bound by convention. The cousins see their newness to the industry as a positive. “We run the business how we feel it should be run, not because that’s how its supposed to be done,” explains Franchi. Their return policy, dedication to customer service, and the fact that their frames are made right here in the U.S.A. — Ventura, to be exact — all set friezeframes apart in the wholesale eyewear industry. When starting out, they even repped the entire line themselves, traveling through the U.S. and Canada up to three weeks each month, building their customer base themselves so that they could then attract the best sales team. They have also resisted the urge to dive into international distribution. “We’re holding back, making sure we have a good foundation here,” says Franchi. And as for Internet sales, they are foregoing that as well — for themselves and the businesses they work with. Franchi explains, “We feel it’s one of the best ways we can protect the retailers that support our brand. If we sold direct to the public, we could significantly increase our sales. But we would be in direct competition with our retailers.” Looking ahead, Franchi and Stanley appear to be in this business for the long run. Though in the past Franchi would often buy and then sell his businesses, this one has “no exit strategy.” The future looks bright, especially when seen through a pair of sparkly frames. v Find retail locations and check out the full collection at friezeframes.com. Are You Suffering with Neuropathy? Do You Have: Numbness, Sharp, Electric Pain, Burning & Tingling, Pain in your feet, Cramping or Restlessness, Prickling/tingling feelings, Difficulty Sleeping from Leg/Foot Discomfort or Restless Leg Syndrome? If you suffer from one or more of these problems, you could have a common condition called peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy affects every part of your life------walking, sitting, sleeping…your ability to enjoy relationships, socialize and so much more. If you have tried “everything” (physiotherapy, Lyrica, Neurontin or other pain medications) and you are not getting the results you want, or even worse than that, if you were told by your doctor “You’re going to have to live with it”, then this may be the most important information you have ever read. More Medications Are Not The Solution While this may be necessary for temporary relief of severe symptoms, using them long term is no way to live. Some of the more common drugs given include pain pills, antiseizure medications, and anti-depressants – all of which have serious side effects. The Likely Cause Of Your Problem Whether due to diabetes, chemotherapy, dialysis, cardiovascular disease or other unidentified (idiopathic) disorders, the symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy share common causes. Just as though your brain needs oxygen to function properly, so do the nerves in your feet or hands. Nerves are highly vulnerable to damage when they are deprived of adequate amounts of oxygen, glucose (insulin), or stimulation. Any condition that lowers the amount of oxygen, glucose or stimulation to the peripheral nerves can eventually lead to neuropathy.
time progresses, you’ll begin to experience some frequent and repeating symptoms. As it gets worse, many people feel an awful, painful sensation in their legs and feet all the time as though they are wearing a stocking on their feet when they are not, all day and night. Most forms of chronic Peripheral Neuropathies are degenerative and progressive. In other words, if left untreated, they will likely get worse over time. The U.S. rate of foot amputations from Diabetic Neuropathy has soared approaching 100,000 annually. The thing that I hate to see the most is someone who has let their condition progress to the point of having ulcers or sores on their feet. What will your feet, toes, or hands feel like and be like 6, 9, or 12 months from today?
do have other options! You may not have to be on sleep inducing drugs to keep the pain under control! You may not have to get used to the numbness and tingling! You should now be so quick to change your life, or give up your lifestyle! People are finding out what used to be called “alternative” healthcare…are now considered mainstream, effective, useful, and even sometimes permanent cures to previously incurable conditions!
When you call and make an appointment, my office assistant will ask you a few short questions to see if you’re potentially a candidate. When you come in, we’ll perform a Comprehensive Neuropathy Consultation and History. If you meet the criteria I have set forth, then a Thorough, Qualifying, Multi-Point Neuropathy Examination will be performed… to see if we may be able to help you. I will do this Evaluation and Qualifying Process for only $39.00.
What Makes Our Unique Approach to Neuropathy so Successful? It all starts with diagnosing the problem correctly…and then following up with a comprehensive layered approach to help you alleviate every major symptom of your Neuropathy.
Most importantly, all of the therapies and technologies we use are totally natural and don’t carry dangerous “side” effects as most Unlike other disease, Peripheral Neuropathy is a drugs do. To me, that’s always a better option condition that slowly eats away at than living on drugs and relying on chemicals you…quietly, like a thief in the night. Like the that alter the normal balance and function of your body. angry spouse in the detective stories who slowly poisons the other spouse with arsenic. It “I came in to see Dr. Alff because I had a hard is just like that poison (especially with time walking; both legs were really bad due to diabetes), doing its damage to nerves slowly. Neuropathy. When I first came in I had to use a So slowly, that at first, when it’s already done walker to get around and the way things were some damage, you won’t even notice it. As Here’s what makes Peripheral Neuropathy so dangerous!
“I have had Neuropathy starting in my feet since the mid 1980’s. My Neuropathy was moving very close to my knees, my legs were starting to get numb as well. My M.D. diagnosed me as having Peripheral Neuropathy, and told me that there was nothing that could be done about it and it would definitely get worse. Since I’ve started treatment with Dr. Alff, so many things have changed! I am doing everything they are telling me to do and I feel absolutely amazing! I feel like a completely different person. My feet are responding well to the treatment …. I am so excited!” Hanna C, Oxnard

A little bit Country The rustic-inspired handiwork of Martha and Christie Kelley By Leslie A. Westbrook
T
win sisters Martha and Christie Kelley seem to have completed dozens of tasks every day since purchasing their magical 44-acre Gridley Ranch in Ojai eight years ago. There were low-water lawn seeds to be sown, and beautiful stone culverts to be emptied of dirt and construction materi-
Photography by Gaszton Gal
Martha, a retired film editor, moved west from Chicago in 2000; Christie retired from the fast-paced L.A. advertising world where she worked as an art director and graphic designer. Along with their two dogs, a blue heeler named Angus and a terrier mix called Dexter, the sisters mind the land—and then some.
Tucked in the middle of this magnificent spot is a charming 2,000-square-foot house with an interior lovingly put together by the sisters and filled with their perfectly arranged treasures and creations. als. There were hybrid poplar trees to be planted for shade. There were couches to be recovered, family heirlooms to be arranged. Not to mention art pieces for Martha to paint and hang on the walls alongside the reassembled industrial lights made out of recycled materials that Christie designs and constructs. Then, of course, there were oranges to pick and coffee to make for my early visit one fine sunny day in February. 28 | ventana | March 2013
Surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest on three sides, the ranch traces its origins to a land grant consigned to Samuel Gridley by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892 to supply water to Ojai. When I first drove through the rustic wooden gated entrance, I could not stop swearing to myself, out loud: “Holy you-know-what, this place is so UN *&^%
Opposite: Rustic elements abound in the living room. A handforged iron chandelier hangs over a fireplace of local stone. Vintage French chairs, cowhides, antlers, Navajo blankets, and an antique book press complete the look.
This page: The painting-in-progress is by Martha Kelley. Her sister, Christie, builds lamps from old industrial parts. Here in the breezeway, the twins analyze their art before completing it in the studio. march 2013 | ventana | 29

believably amazing.” That was before I even walked into the super cool house and met these very sweet and talented women. I knew I was going to hate to leave. The road, more like a miniature amusement park roller coaster ride (depending on one’s speed), winds and curves and goes up and down and opens onto a pasture that stretches up to meet an old barn, guest cottage, terraced gardens, and handcrafted rock walls. At every step and turn, there is a beautiful site and view to behold. And tucked in the middle of this magnificent spot is a charming 2,000-square-foot house with an interior lovingly put together by the sisters and filled with their perfectly arranged treasures and creations. Most of the interior décor was Christie’s doing – but each sister gives equal credit to the other for the success of their efforts. Christie also converted a charming tool shed that now matches the house, as well as a barn that functions as a painting studio for her sister. Christie credits Martha for the rosemary filled garden with lovely sitting areas tucked here and there, but the edges blur. Yet, in the library/guest room, Martha designed two chaise lounges that face one side of a double-sided fireplace. On a library table, Christie is construct-

ing an assemblage made with bullets. Two Franz Kline-like paintings by Martha (“He’s my favorite, he got me started,” she admits) flank the other side of the fireplace in the living room, where several of Christie’s whimsical lamps – including one made from an old movie projector – provide ambient lighting. Rams horns and fencing helmets hanging on one wall provoke. “I have a penchant for fencing helmets,” Christie says before Martha chimes in: “It’s creepy! Christie likes creepy things!” The sister defends her position: “There’s lots of mystery to masks. They go back to a time when they were inscrutable. There’s much to be said for them.” The floor is Saltillo tile covered with cowhides: “They are the best rugs for the money, they clean easily, are natural and beautiful,” says Christie who painted all the cabinets in the kitchen, bar/pantry and other rooms. The library boasts a “creepaholic” engraving Christie loves as well as stacks of books—many recovered with book jackets she made (especially if neon colors, which she despises.) There are plenty of other touches to discover along the way, including old surfboards that Christie has painted, and more recovered furnishings. The frame from a “hideous” painting that hung over the bed in the master bedroom was repurposed, hats that evoke the Californio land grants vibe now hang over the bed. Perhaps the most fun touch of all is a curtain that wraps around “the throne” in the spacious, window-lined master bath to create privacy. One imagines it’s a fine little place to think and come up with new ideas. Gridley Ranch is a retreat that invites many activities, although it appears to be a great spot for doing absolutely nothing at all. It most certainly inspires creativity. v

Rod Tuazon was recently recognized as a Platinum Club Award recipient for his outstanding production in 2012. He is one of only This_proof_is_to_check_for_accuracy_and_is_not_ Signature:___________________________ eight real estate agents who earned the designation, out of nearly 600.
intended_to_show_quality_of_reproduction.
Rod, a 29-year Ventura county resident with over 20 years in real estate, began his career as an insurance agent with a Fortune 500 company. He decided to get his real estate license and worked part-time, during nights and weekends, while continuing his insurance career. Soon though, Rod was forced to choose a path: accept a promotion to head the National Premium Audit Department at a Fortune 500 company on the east coast or explore a full time career in real estate. Rod walked away from the promotional opportunity and decided to shift his career to real estate, instead. “I had earned my Master’s in Business Administration with a 4.0 GPA while working full-time in insurance.“I was ready to apply everything I learned to my new position,” Rod explained,“but I didn’t want to uproot my family, my young children.” Within the first month of opening his real estate company, Rod earned three listings and never looked back again. In 2010, Rod decided to join Ventura County’s leading real estate brokerage, Troop Real Estate, where he earned the Million Dollar Club the first year and the President’s Club the following year. Last year, he set his sights on the highest production award Troop offers, the President’s Club Elite. It wasn’t until the middle of the year that Troop announced a higher award, the Platinum Club. “I re-evaluated my business plan and decided to shift my goal for the Platinum award,” Rod explained. Nothing can stop Rod once he has zeroed in on a goal and by the end of the year he received his Platinum Club award. “Sometimes, I look back and wonder how did I do that? It’s all about motivation and the desire to help others realize their dream,” he said with a smile. Rod also brings mortgage lending and property management expertise to his profession. A real estate broker who holds many noteworthy designations and who believes that education is paramount to success, Rod is also committed to giving back to his community by volunteering at Santa Clara Church in Oxnard for over 20 years.

Short List Through March 17 | Santa Paula Theater The Santa Paula Theater Center kicked off their 2013 season with this timeless classic by Arthur Miller on its Main Stage. “Death of a Salesman” has been hailed by critics as possibly the best play written about the American experience in the 20th century. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and numerous Tony Awards, the play considers the ordinary man’s struggle to be extraordinary in life and to achieve the American Dream. Set in New York City in the late 1940s, this drama focuses on the Loman family’s struggles together and separately to find happiness and success in a world in the midst of post-war change. Led by father and husband Willy’s vision of life, the Lomans perceive their lives as alternately an opportunity for continuing hope and the inevitability of despair. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. 125 S. 7th St., Santa Paula. For more information, visit santapaulatheatercenter.org.
