NARCI LEE, BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN
EDITOR’S NOTE
STYLE RULE #1
L
ike sugar and sex, fashion sells. This is one of the truisms of publishing. Just look around the next time you’re in a supermarket checkout line. Candies are positioned at kids’ eye level; a torso higher, glamour mags beckon mom from a storm cloud of perfume samples. It’s all about the impulse buy. Retailers have been cashing in for decades, and national magazines use wearable glitz and glam to peddle product like Madison Avenue uses skin in their ad campaigns. Of course, we don’t have to sell Ventana. Or appeal to a national readership. Which frees us from editorial hang-ups like designing covers that shout for attention in Vons, or ushering in each new season with a spread of “must-have” fashion accessories. And besides, reader feedback over the years has suggested that craftsmanship and local style are far more compelling than big-name fashion in this offbeat little market we call home. So we’ve steadily leaned away from fashion per se as our March theme, focusing instead on the heart and soul behind some of our county’s most stylish offerings. Like a lot of men in Ventura County, I really don’t do fashion; I wear clothes. But I can still appreciate the artistry of highend, Indo-inspired beachwear from the Ventura-based company KADU (page 29), even if my own travels in the Indonesian archipelago haven’t included anything quite as spiffy as Terry Simms’ trunks. Another style-laden company in the area that’s raised the bar on outdoor adventure gear is Ticla (page 10), which pro-

motes the incongruous notion of elegant camping. Founder Rich Hill worked for Patagonia and a few other industry leaders before striking out to bridge the gap between hardcore mountaineering equipment and the sort of cheap gear that car campers tend to pick up at big-box stores on the way out of town. But getting back to the distinction between fashion and style: I’d argue that many fashionistas—cloaked head-to-toe in name brands, their individuality shrouded by logos—stifle their true character as they try to emulate a perceived style. Then there’s the rare bird who throws fashion and style into the stewpot together, adds a pinch of artistry and a sprig of quirky humor, and serves up striking exhibitions of flair on a daily basis. On page 19, we introduce Narci Lee, a local style bomb who explodes into the world each morning, parading around in sui generis outfits of her own design: patchwork dresses sewn together from used nursing-home gowns, ruffled bloomers, “drop cloth skirts.” And it’s all her, uncontrived—just Narci being Narci. Sure, we could have filled our editorial pages with dazzling fashion pictorials. It would’ve looked nice, too. And maybe some of our readers would’ve used this March issue as a shopping resource. But I like to think stories of flesh-and-blood people, our neighbors, can spark something more profound than consumerism, and perhaps inspire a few of you to abide by Style Rule #1: Do your own thing. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

CAMPING REDEFINED TICLA founder Rich Hill on the limits of khaki, the realities of casual camping, and the emotions of outdoor gear. BY ALLISON COSTA AFTER A LONG CAREER IN THE OUTDOOR INDUSTRY—WITH TIME SPENT AT Moonstone, Kelty, Marmot, Prana, and Patagonia—Rich Hill is now turning outdoor equipment on its head by making it, um, pretty. With a lean team of four employees, his two-yearold company, TICLA (pronounced tee-kla), has set up shop on the corner of Laurel and Santa Clara streets in Downtown Ventura. Aimed at making the lives of car campers easier and more aesthetically pleasing, Hill’s company may just revolutionize the world of car camping gear. Considering its motto, “Don’t Camp Ugly,” we just had to find out more. We sat down with him recently to hear about his inspiration, his company, and his take on all things gear. Where did you get your inspiration for the business? In 2008 we packed up and went to Mexico for three months with our two-year-old son. My wife, Kelly, is a surfer, so we hit every left point we could find all the way down past Puerto Escondido. It was on that trip that the idea for TICLA started coming together. I think having the time to think about it, and using the camper everyday for three months, gave me the space to say, ‘There seems to be something here.’ The company is named for [a surf spot called] La Ticla … where I wrote most of the plan. We said, ‘What if we take what we’ve learned with sportswear and merchandising and appealing to women, and put that into equipment.’ We thought with TICLA we’d bring a little bit of color, trend, and fashion to outdoor gear. Who are you designing for? I wanted to make product for what I call the ‘oh no campers,’ you know, someone who says, ‘I told my sister I’d go camping with her for the last seven years, and this time I really have to go.’ We’re your company. If you’re camping a mile away from your car, you need someone else’s stuff, we’re not your company. We’re for camping at the lowest elevation and the shortest distance from the car. So, what’s your title? I’ve been called CEO and President, but I guess I prefer Founder ... You know, we are 10

so small, those hierarchies don’t really work ... I mean, I was cleaning the bathroom before you got here. Are you the only ones doing this? No, there are other companies of the same spirit, saying, ‘We gotta get out of this rut ... get away from all this khaki and green.’ Like those images of sitting in a tent, or sitting around a campfire … that’s not why we camp. It’s about mountain biking, climbing, music festivals—let’s inspire that. So, what makes you different from other outdoor equipment companies? Well, for one, we hate stuff sacks. You know when you open the tent and see stuff everywhere? We call that the shit show. We ship our stuff in stuff sacks, but our hope is that it never goes back in there. With our GOOD system, it goes into these larger bags where you keep your sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and there’s room left for pajamas and a book and anything else related to bedtime. Normally when you camp, each person is carrying five or six different stuff sacks into the tent. With our system, each person brings one bag into the tent, really simplifying things. Tell us about your tents. Most tents are designed for massive wind and rain, but when you protect for those environments you make a hard-to-use tent. We found that most people are concerned }}

about heat when they camp. If they see horrible weather, they just don’t go. We offer rain protection, but the emphasis is on ventilation. The industry is driven by REI—they buy out of Seattle, they don’t know what camping in Joshua Tree is. So we said, lets build equipment for the southern half of the nation. How did that drive your design? Our Tea House tent has a large eave on all sides. I talked to our designer and said, ‘I need a tent where you can open up all four windows in the rain,’ so that’s what we did. And then we also wanted the ability to sit in our tents and look around, and still have weather protection. You know how it kind of spooks you when you can’t see out of the tent? Well, we spent a lot of time thinking about things like that. Your sleeping bags are unique in that each side is made of a different weight, giving users options depending on the temperature. What are some other ways you’ve approached sleeping bag design differently from the norm? Everyone buys them too big, but then you can’t heat them up. So we started selling them in alpha sizes so its still wide and comfortable but you actually have the ability to heat up the space. Also, sleeping bags are often made with lightweight silky fabrics, which are horrible next to skin. We wanted to be ‘naked optimized’ so if you crawl in, it’s comfortable. We use a 30-yearold brushed polyester that dries fast but is really nice next to the skin. You talk about camping gear being elegant. How so? This next year the floor of our tents will be printed in a patterned fabric. You go in, it gives a sense of top and bottom. It’s actually grounded. Does this make it any stronger, any lighter? No. It costs money. But we’re doing it ... That’s one way we talk about elegance. How did you come up with product names? We try to be whimsical and not take ourselves too seriously. The shade structure—I literally wrote ‘shado inflato’ as a joke and it just stuck. We make a throw, a mini-blanket, and call it the Henry David Throw. We are a creative company, not a technical company. You worked for Patagonia, then Prana, and started TICLA in San Diego. Why move the company to Ventura? Because of family and the support mechanisms here. Patagonia spit out a lot of great people who all loved their experience there and who are doing really interesting things, and those resources are really helpful here. What I didn’t realize is how many other small businesses there are here. It’s a really good entrepreneurial place. Why now? Because it’s such a sea of sameness out there. We think we can add color, style, and print into camping. That look of hyper stripped down, no excess, there’s no inspiration to purchase it. I’ve always been a believer of bringing emotion to a piece. Advice for those planning their next camping trip? Take less crap. Really, simplify. I think people get overwhelmed by camping because there are so many traditions. Bacon and eggs for breakfast? People don’t do that at home, but for some reason they think they need to when camping. A PASSION FOR FASHION
THE INDELIBLE STYLE OF NARCI LEE. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN THERE ARE MANY ARTISTIC SOULS LURKING IN VENTURA County who gather inspiration from a variety of sources. For Narci Lee, a diminutive, creative force of nature who sports a nose ring and exudes positivity, it’s the local art scene. But it didn’t happen right off the bat. “For a long time, I didn’t feel supported,” the upbeat, one-of-a-kind clothing designer and artist admitted. “I am a fashion-forward thinking gal in a jeans and flip-flop town. I have }one } pair of jeans, and I hate wearing them. But I do love living here.” Narci and her husband, Jason Russell, a home baker, live a colorful life in an equally vibrant chartreuse and burgundy East Ventura house they dubbed “The Oasis.” A gal with a penchant for recycling, Narci shops thrift stores and rummage sales for materials used in her creative endeavors, while her husband mans the kitchen. }}

“I am not a retail consumer; I am a second-hand consumer. I like things used, old, and unique. I am a repurposer. The best things in the world are the used things. Sheets are some of my favorites,” said Narci, who hits the monthly Help of Ojai rummage sale, where she can buy an entire bag full of items for $6 that she converts into fanciful clothing designs. All of her designs come “from her head,” she never buys patterns or new fabric. Take, for example, the pile of muumuu, nursing-home gowns she found and magically transformed into a cheerful patchwork dress with a flouncy skirt, saving the pockets and reversing a hand-embroidered hem into a collar. Mention almost any material or method that Narci works with and she’ll tell you she loves it. “Fashion is my passion. I love spray paint,” she laughed, showing me one of her “drop cloth skirts,” made from pre-owned sheets that she puts on the ground and spray paints Jackson Pollock-style and stencils with items such as a light switch cover. The fabric is cut and stitched, and an expandable waistband added. “We did tag a wall at home,” she admitted. What else is she passionate about? “I love tissue paper!” she squealed. Narci makes tissue paper collages and even covers lampshades with it. But wait, there’s more… “Oh, I am very, very inspired. I love linens, lace—my favorite fabric to work with is linen. I am a ruffle fiend. I love ruffles. Yes, yes, yes… a single button is going to be my signature,” she says, her imagination zippering a thousand miles an hour and her pants trimmed with a ruffle, proving the point. Born in Canoga Park, in 1963, Narci grew up in Calabasas. Narci is short for Nargess (Persian for Narcissus, the flower, she notes). Her parents are traditional engineers who thought their daughter might become a lawyer. But after a “miserable” stint as a paralegal, Narci discovered her true calling in the creative world. “My mother taught me how to sew. She made my brother’s and my clothing when we were little. My grandmother gave me my first sewing machine when I was in my late 20s. I set it aside for many years. In my late 30s/early 40s, I started sewing and discovered repurposing—morphing pants into a skirt, or vice versa, was really my thing.” The all-encompassing artist with a forte for fashion has recently been reaching out into performance art, where she exhibits her fashion flair combined with dance and/or words. I caught her fifth performance during First Friday in February, in the newly launched Namba Performance Space at Aloft Dance Theatre on Oak Street in Downtown Ventura, where she played an aging Hollywood movie star with a New Yawk accent being interviewed by her (reallife) husband. “That was the first time I spoke, it’s been dance mixed with fashion in the past. Doing this has tapped into something extraordinary for me: a lifetime desire of mine to be a performer. There’s a little tiny part of Narci that would love to be a performer!” she laughed. Producer and artist John White, who created the events, approached Narci after seeing a fashion show she 20

created. Her first piece, titled “Harry’s Traveling Bizarre presents Waltzing in Fantasy” (watch it on YouTube), also included her husband and partner in crime. “Oh yeah, I paint furniture too!” she added, pointing out a coffee table and vintage curio cabinet colorfully decorated inside and out with harlequin diamonds. “Obviously, these pieces were re-purposed, and just for our home. To make our home feel better.” No wall surface goes untouched in “The Oasis.” Narci’s sewing room is lavender, their living and dining room are painted saffron yellow, and kitchen cabinets are rust and aubergine. Artworks by Narci and other local artists, all of them personal friends, fill the walls.
When Narci Lee was first described to me as “a performance artist and seamstress who sports her own amazing clothing creations in everyday life” I wondered how she (and other creative spirits like her) survives these days. Turns out she has a day job, working at Trader Joe’s in the Pacific View Mall. “I only work four days a week, which allows me a lot of time to do my thing, but it also pushes me more into the community. I know so many people in this town because of Trader Joe’s. It feeds me, being around the public. I have a very good balance of creative time and time out in public,” she said. Even at TJ’s there’s no escaping Narci Lee’s creative mark. Look up over the checkout counters where a six-foot mobile, constructed of Ventura driftwood, seashells, and origami birds, was commissioned by the store and made by none other than the indelible artist. “I am one-of-a-kind,” she said. “And I want to create one-of-a kind head turners.” v
OPPOSITE: The new black, according Narci: orange and chartreuse. “And bloomers, of course!” ABOVE: The one-of-a-kind designer at home in her East Ventura “Oasis.” LEFT: Narci Lee with a few of her favorite things: husband Jason Lee, her drop cloth skirt, and her living room art collection.

NESTING
CALIFORNIA DREAM An architect and an interior designer craft a hilltop perch that celebrates Santa Paula and life in the Golden State. BY MARK STORER PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL
I
t is not true that you can’t go home again. Just ask the city of Santa Paula. With a revitalized downtown to make it look, well, a lot like it looked a hundred years ago, Santa Paula has the undeniable charm of a place looking backward without regret and forward to a future that is at once viable and sustainable. A large number of local inhabitants have lived here all their lives and don’t intend to leave. But when folks started climbing the hills north of town to build houses, they were rewarded with unparalleled views and a quietude reminiscent of the city’s bucolic past. That attracted a few more non-natives. It’s certainly true for John and Susan Kulwiec. He’s a forensic architect; she’s an inte-
rior designer. Twenty or so years ago, Susan went to work for John at his firm and the rest reads like a good American love story. They’ve been partnered ever since, and decided to pool their talents into a 4,800-square-foot home in the heights of Santa Paula with views stretching west to the Pacific, south to the hills, and east to the pastoral splendor of their fair city and beyond to Fillmore. “It’s a town that has a lot of heart,” said Susan as she walked me through their front door. She refers to herself and John as two of the rare “happy transplants,” Midwesterners who came to California seeking their fortunes and actually found them. Their home cascades 50 feet down from the
street and rolls into a sloping backyard full of drought tolerant ground cover and fruit trees that undulate with the ridgeline, marking the forward ground of a view to the horizon and tempered by efficient technologies that keep costs and resource demands low. “The view is everything,” said Susan. “After we got married, we wanted to have a house that was just ours. Neither of us ever thought we would have a house that we would design and build together. It was a real dream come true.” The southwest facing wall is windows—and a lot of them. “I felt like I wanted to work with the hillside, not against it,” said John. “I didn’t want to burrow in and grate the hill away. I wanted to have the house roll with it.” MARCH 2015

Built in 1996 for an unheard of $90 a square foot, the house flows like a river down the hillside. One enters over a bridge to the front entrance and main floor. There are solar panels for electricity, halogen lights in the interior, a kitchen that is a perfect blend of form and function. Susan even has a study behind the kitchen with a window cut into the wall so she can see into the rooms, out to the deck, and the views beyond. “We designed it so we would have as much of this 220-degree view as possible,” Susan said. The couple spends a good deal of their time outside on the deck, but they don’t need to be outside to enjoy the view. In fact, the only place where a wall blocks it is to separate a powder room from the main living area to give users a sense of privacy. Susan’s dedication to the artwork that enhances the walls is far more than just design theory. “There’s a lot of contemporary and Asian influences,” she said. “But there’s a story behind every single one.” Her best friend, who passed away 10 years ago, chose two of the pieces. “She loved Asian influences,” Susan said, pointing out vibrant, earthy paintings on silk. “I think of her when I see them.” The Kulwiecs also have artwork by Camarillo artist Pat Richards. And John’s son Ken produced several charcoal drawings and paintings that enhance Susan’s choice of colors, which allow earthy textures to draw in dark shades and purple and blue into the mix. The master bedroom, closet, and master bath are on the same level as John’s efficient study, a room that is not gigantic or overwhelming in any sense, but rather inviting and cozy without feeling too closed off. Downstairs is quieter these days, unless the grandchildren come over. Between the two of them, John and Susan have six children, all grown now, and three grandchildren. The family room is simple, understated, and luxurious with sea foam greens and reddish brown leather furniture. Two bedrooms and a large bathroom are off an adjacent hallway set off by a tableau of art, a centerpiece cupboard, and a blend of the sea foam, the browns, and the tile floor. From the family room, one accesses the backyard, which is really more of a drought tolerant garden. Naturally occurring rocks create a border between the entryway and the ground cover of pink myoporum.
“We’ve had this ground cover in here for 19 years,” said Susan. “When it blooms there are pink flowers, it’s so lush and beautiful.” The deer visit the yard frequently, nibbling on the succulents and a small grapevine toward the bottom of the hill. Dotting the hillside are lemon, Pixie tangerine, apple, and tangelo trees, like giants over the ground cover. The apricot trees died off because they require colder weather than Santa Paula offers. Looking at the house from the rear shows the X-framing and giant walls that appear to be concrete, but are in fact flexi-rock or hard stucco. The walls have steel frame inside them as well, and the footings of the house are very deep, going down to bedrock. These building materials allow the back wall to be filled with low-e windows. Large overhangs from the roof provide more protection from direct sun. Back inside, across the hall from the family room is a game room, or great room, that houses a pool table and exercise equipment. “It used to serve as our office, and we had staff members down here,” said John. “But now the grandkids play down here. So do we.” The house’s playful nature is apparent throughout, although the Kulwiecs took their building and design very seriously, creating a home filled with warmth and color, splashes of art, and décor that inspires conversation. “It took us about a year-and-a-half to design the house,” said John, who spent much of his career traveling around the country. These days, he’s “mostly in California,” close to home. And considering the home he and Susan built together, one can see why. v LOCATION: Santa Paula ARCHITECT OF RECORD: W. ABOUT TOWN
DRIPPING WITH STYLE Local company KADU and the water of life. BY RYAN A. SMITH
I
t’s a wintry morning at Alba’s Garment Works in Ventura, and Terry Simms is looking over the cut-and-sew production of KADU’s fall 2015 collection, a careful routine he’s repeated for 10 days straight. The time crunch is on for KADU. Samples of its newly designed “Pasola Warrior” line of high-end beachwear need to be stitched for a lookbook photo shoot at week’s end, with another series to be shipped to the Medium Concepts showroom in New York City for buyers’ gatherings and tradeshow flaunting. A resident of Oak View, Simms cofounded KADU with his longtime friend John Pomianowski, a New York-based fine artist with three decades of designing graphics, stained glass, and textiles under his belt. Simms also owns a luxury travel guide company called Terry Simms
Surf, and when he’s not at home with his wife, Nancy, and their three-year-old daughter, Indira, he might be on a pristine tropical beach somewhere coaching corporate surfers and their families. The business partners’ shared love for exotic islands and their indigenous cultures led to an unexpected relationship. “I was intrigued by the cloths woven by Sumbanese women,” John explains, “but my ‘light bulb moment’ came at an exhibition of ikats at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where my mind was blown by the beauty and sophistication of the pieces on display. The idea came to me that these prints would make fantastic boardshorts.” Months after that epiphany, the two friends met in Kauai, where Terry mentioned his intention to start an upscale beachwear brand for }}

surfers, swimmers, standup paddlers, and warm-water adventure sports enthusiasts. John shared his ikat idea, and planning and R&D began shortly thereafter. The name KADU comes from a Sumba dialect and refers to the horns of the water buffalo, a fixture on the Sumba landscape and a symbol of power, wealth, and pride. When the horns are arranged in a tier motif, like KADU’s logo, they represent a ladder to the higher heavens. The company’s mission is to weave the stories of ikats into sumptuous garments built with an abiding sustainability ethos, smart tailoring, fine materials, and highperformance, technical design to address a sophisticated, responsible clientele. “We were both dissatisfied with what was available on the market,” says Simms. “It was all loud, obnoxious designs aimed at an adolescent audience. We set out to design a technically superior boardshort that … would also be elegant and refined on land, while reflecting the timeless sophistication and artisan touch of the Indonesian ikat patterns.” Ikat weaving is amazingly complicated, requiring vision, foresight, and a deft hand, not to mention the patience of a saint, as the finest cloths can require several years to finish. The local, plant-based dyes alone can take multiple growing seasons to collect. The work is done on a simple, wooden frame loom using hand-grown, handspun cotton, without the aid of a pencil, paper, or a ruler. Sumbanese women are known for producing the world’s finest ikats. Intricate patterns, featuring symbols of birth, life, death, and reincarnation, and indicating clan position and social status, are used as a means of ritual exchange in weddings, funerals, and other ceremonies. Anthropomorphic figures, geometric panels, horses, deer, lions, birds, fish, skull trees, stars, prawns, butterflies, and flowers infuse these textiles with stories that explain Sumba’s unique Marapu religion, history, and culture. Making the base for KADU’s boardshorts, Simms set out to eliminate the chafing associated with inferior trunks, as well as to create a fast-drying garment. His solutions included high-tech microfiber poly-suede fabric that dries quickly and placket seams covered in soft Lycra Spandex, all bound by top-quality nylon thread. “The only threads more deluxe are made of gold or silver,” insists Simms, who combined the best characteristics of a dozen or so pairs of his own personal trunks to create KADU’s cut pattern. Toward the end of 2014, following the run of KADU’s inaugural line, Simms and Pomianowski made major manufacturing alterations, shifting production from New York City to Ventura. “We absolutely adored our partners in New York,” explains Terry, “but New York is big, very busy, and very popular. KADU was a small fish in a big tank, and it was difficult to get any production information.” Now, he can now drive an easy 20 minutes from his house to talk design with the company’s seamstress, Alba. And their digital printer is located right across the street. “New York was very efficient and professional, but }}

also very expensive,” adds John. “In Ventura, we’ve sourced a more friendly, casual, and collaborative atmosphere, and we’ve been able to see substantially lower production costs.” Overseas stores are currently awaiting KADU’s spring/summer 2015 orders, and it is exactly this type of personal attention and interaction that now helps the company move forward. Its seven-piece line showcases a broad range of colorful prints from all over the Indonesian archipelago and beyond, each with its own regional, ikatinspired design. “We did a widespread, cast-a-net style of designing for our spring and summer prints,” says Terry. “We looked from Borneo to Maldives to Sumatra to Sumba.” The Black Diamond graphic, for example, is from the Komering people of South Sumatra, while the Skull Tree pattern is an allusion to Sumba’s bellicose, now-outlawed headhunting past. For fall 2015, KADU has pushed boardshorts to a new high-water mark. The entire eight-design “Pasola Warrior” line is inspired by a single ikat that tells a tale of an ancient event known as the Pasola and the small Sumbanese village in which it was woven. This Pasola Warrior collection is quite congruent—the colors are all similar, earthen, and the designs play together to form a storyboard of this sophisticated cloth. “We took 1960s surf trunk designs and leg cuts and other elements from those golden days of surfing and hot-rodding, and married them to this ancient, artistic weaving tradition,” Simms explains. Considering the amount of quality time that both Simms and Pomianowski have spent on Sumba, the partners feel indebted to the tiny island’s local people. It was only natural that KADU give back. “Since a lot of our first print ideas came from the Sumba cloths, it was a no-brainer to start working with The Sumba Foundation (a nonprofit dedicated to helping the island’s indigenous people),” Terry says. “As soon as we began seriously discussing making KADU trunks, we immediately partnered with the Foundation as a way to give back to the people who gave us the inspiration. And since they are surf trunks, we wanted to see our donations be water related: water well projects, specifically.” In planning new seasonal collections, KADU intends to continue its close focus on a single ikat from a single village and the story that goes with it. Looking ahead to spring/summer 2016, the team aims to take the same approach with a warmer, lighter palette. “We have so much to be excited about right now,” Terry says with a smile. “Our goal for KADU, since the beginning, has simply been to offer the best pair of surf trunks you’ve ever worn. That is the most important thing. Number two is the look, number three is the longevity, and number four is social consciousness. It’s all coming together beautifully in 2015.” v
