editor’s note

I

A NEOCLASSICAL TRIP

I’ve never needed a plumeria lei or a complimentary umbrella drink. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take the drink. Preferably without the umbrella. But when I travel, I don’t expect a welcome mat; my trips are rarely about vacationing. The way I see it, travel at its best is about rattling the brain, extremes, perceptions and misperceptions, tweaking priorities. Travel is not necessarily relaxing. The mental aspect of travel tends to slip between the pages of photo albums. Our stories devolve into exotic meals recounted, scenic panoramas described. Something happens internally, though: a broadening of experience that gives the traveler a deeper sense of the world as a whole. It is a valuable thing, travel. The ultimate education. Of course as our circumstances change so does our approach to travel. Our trips list extends to include family-friendly destinations (page 17) and quiet getaways for two, kids not included. Which isn’t to say we have to shelve our youth alongside the old road-weary backpack. My three most recent trips have included both of the above—and a minimalist solo expedition to Indonesia. “Go now,” said my then-pregnant wife, “it’s going to get harder with two kids.” And so I went. Just as I’ve done since my teens and hope to do until I can no longer shoulder a backpack. Travel is a touchy theme for a regional magazine. Finding stories with enough of a local tie-in to float them editorially can be a challenge. I’ve had Susan Brown’s culinary travel piece—a firsthand take on Tuscany meets Ventura (page 13)—simmering since October when it appeared in my inbox. No assignment, no prior contact; she sent the whole ravioli, words and photos, on spec. In the world of freelance writing that typically leads to rejection, but a quick read had me looking ahead to May of 2011.

Susan’s piece is a little different than our usual articles. And Albert Behar (page 26) is a lot different than our usual interview subjects. To start with, he’s a teenager. An artist and composer (yes, a teenager and a composer) who works in the atypical medium of sound. Now, I’ll be honest: the hook that caught me wasn’t the lofty themes of art and composition. It was a photograph of Albert wearing what looked like a megaphone mounted on a skateboard helmet. This, I thought, is what happens when a kid from Ojai moves to New York. As I Googled around the Web trying to make sense of Albert and his neoclassical sextet, The Movement, it became increasingly clear that the kid was into something well outside my own sphere of knowledge. The youth can take us tripping on a path that at times seems odd, even ludicrous. Then suddenly what they’ve been up to becomes commonplace. Scoff too long and you’re a dinosaur, dipping your quill into an inkwell while the rest of the world taps away on tablets. I liked the mental journey aspect of this subject: a trip into a next-generation art form. Then there’s Albert’s theory on “musical ideas,” which he believes we all have, though we stifle that part of our brain by piping sounds into our ears (hence the megaphone output). Is it a stretch to feature this interview in a Travel-themed issue? Oh, yes. Without a doubt. But I think most Ventana readers will appreciate the stretch. It’s good to occasionally step down from our high horses of age and assumed wisdom to hear out the youth, to consider the possibility that a 19-yearold with a megaphone on his head is leading us. Not the other way around. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

TABLE TALK

A Taste of Tuscany

I

Local ingredients and Italian technique pair up to recreate the rustic flavors of Podere San Lorenzo—an Italian agriturismo built around a 12th century monastery BY SUSAN BROWN

I’M IN MY KITCHEN PREPARING PASTA E FAGIOLI (cannellini bean and pasta soup), a recipe from a cookbook that I lovingly toted across Italy. While staying at an organic olive farm in northern Tuscany, I attended a cooking class that included the book, and though I’ve only prepared the beans for the soup so far (they’re simmering with fresh sage from my garden and garlic, tomatoes, and olive oil from the farmers’ market on Santa Clara Street in Ventura) my entire house smells like a Tuscan dream. When the beans are tender, I’ll begin the soup with a slew of new ingredients, such as “1 bunch rosemary.” How much, exactly, is “1 bunch rosemary”? I could email Podere San Lorenzo, the agriturismo where the cooking class took place, but it’s nighttime in Italy and the chefs are asleep. So I clip a small handful of fresh rosemary from my yard and hope for the best. Agriturismo is a vacation option that allows guests to experience rural Italian life. The idea is that you rent an apartment from the owner of a farm, which financially helps support the property. Our farmhouse was located about a mile from Volterra, a medieval Etruscan town that dates to

the 1st century BC, but these types of farm stays can be found throughout Italy and range from modest, complete with farm animals, to upscale. Few, however, offer cooking classes. Life on the farm is slow-paced, but activities abound: hiking, swimming (our farm had a chemical-free pool fed by mountain springs), reading, guitar playing (my husband takes his acoustic everywhere), napping, picnicking, watching Tuscan sunsets, and exploring nearby towns. To reach Podere San Lorenzo you need a car, so we rented a tiny Fiat (they’re a cinch to park) and drove from Rome, with an overnight stay in the wine town of Montepulciano along the way. We were lost for hours while looking for Montepulciano, but the next day we found our agriturismo with ease. It was located down a winding dirt road, surrounded by olive trees and Tuscan hills that, seriously, could have been a painting. The San Lorenzo Farmhouse was built around a 12th century monastery. The window in the monastery, where breakfast and dinner is served and where the cooking class takes place, has remnants of ancient frescos. The apartment, where we stayed for five days, had a wall of windows MAY 2011

PODERE SAN LORENZO San Lorenzo Farmhouse is located in the heart of Tuscany. The centuries-old property has been restored to offer guests a comfortable stay on a working olive farm. More than 1000 olive trees are grown organically, their virgin oil joining fresh, seasonal ingredients in the chef’s cooking. Details online at agriturismo-volterra.it.

PASTA E FAGIOLI >>> (pasta and cannellini bean soup) Serves 6 Start by cooking the fagioli cannellini (cannellini beans): Soak 500 g. (18 oz.) dried cannellini beans overnight in cold water. Wash and put into a large pot. Add water until approximately 4 inches above the beans. Add 6 fresh sage leaves, 3 garlic cloves, 1 fresh chopped tomato, 3 tbsp. olive oil, and salt/pepper. Cover pot and bring to a boil. Remove cover when water starts to boil and cook on low heat until tender, approximately 1.5 hours. Cover the bottom of a large pan with olive oil. Add 1 bunch chopped rosemary and 3 cloves sliced garlic. Cook on high heat. As soon as oil is hot, add 16 oz. pureed tomato and salt/ pepper to taste. Cook for 15 minutes. Turn heat to low and add cannellini water and beans, stirring to keep beans from sticking. When soup starts to boil, add 300 g. (10 oz.) of penne pasta and cook for 15 minutes. (You may cook the pasta separately and add to soup when al dente.)

overlooking the rolling Tuscan hills, olive trees, and a portion of the farm’s extensive, organic garden. In the morning, as the pink sunrise came through the windows, kept open all night, I could hear a farmer turning the dirt with a shovel. I wanted to pinch myself each morning. After breakfast, we’d explore nearby hilltop towns such as San Gimignano and Volterra, and one ambitious day we drove to Chianti, less than an hour away, for some wine tasting. The cooking class at the farm started at 4:30 in the afternoon and lasted three hours. First, we put salt, pepper, and fresh garlic inside plump loins of pork from nearby Florence. All the other ingredients (olive oil, fresh basil, a huge bowl of tomatoes, colorful sweet peppers, carrots, celery, zucchini, and onions) were from the farm’s organic trees and garden. The eggs and cheeses came from neighboring farms. While the pork and sweet pepper sauce cooked on a portable stove that

had been wheeled into the dining room, we began on the ravioli dough, using a large cookie cutter to form the little round shapes before stuffing them. There is an art to making perfect ravioli. A man in the class had trouble mastering this art and his had holes where the fork, used to make the ruffled edges, penettrated the thinly rolled dough. As a whole, Italians are thin people. In fact, if we saw an overweight Italian, it was more an anomaly than the norm. We decided, after eating our way through Rome, Tuscany, Cinque Terre, and Venice, that it must be the fresh, local Mediterranean diet, and all the walking, that keeps the Italians thin. Rarely did we spot a supermarket; all the towns we visited sported small neighborhood markets with baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables outside, and the largest, most delicious-looking mushrooms I’ve ever seen. A few pointers I gathered in the cooking class were:

Top left: The Farmhouse of San Lorenzo, now an agriturismo, was built around a 12th century monastery. Above: Cobblestone streets lend to the rustic authenticity of rural Italy. Top center: Prep work assumes a reverential quality, as local ingredients are transformed into a topnotch culinary experience. Right: Down-home versions of our weekly farmers’ markets are part of daily life in the Old World. Top right: “I wanted to pinch myself each morning.” Art and nature merge on the Tuscan landscape.

use olive oil in almost everything you cook; use local ingredients whenever possible; use lots of fresh garlic; use fresh herbs, preferably those you grow yourself; and enjoy a glass of wine while cooking. When the class ended, participants had a half-hour to change out of our aprons and into dinner attire, which, on the farm, bordered on sporty casual. The dinner, prepared entirely during the cooking class, was a hearty, authentic Tuscan feast for the eyes, as well as the stomach. And now to taste my own finished Pasta e Fagioli—but first I must grate some fresh Parmesan cheese (brought all the way from Florence) onto the aromatic soup. It tastes as good as it looks, perhaps better, and for a brief moment as I savor the intense olive oil and garlic flavors of my Tuscan masterpiece, I am transported back to Italy, where the delights of the palate are unmatched anywhere in the world—except perhaps right here, in bountiful Ventura County. v

After the Thaw

A summer getaway to Mammoth proves the mountain doesn’t melt away with the snow By matt katz

T

There you are, weekending in Mammoth. You’ve got your Patagonia puff jacket and Gore-Tex boots. There’s a flask of brandy tucked into your hip pocket. The only thing interfering with your weekend idyll is an avalanche of color—purple-tinged monkey flowers and bright, showy mule ears; silky mariposa lilies and crimson columbine: if you’ve ever wanted to know what lies beneath the black diamonds of Hangman’s Hollow or the Cornice Bowl, this is it. After the thaw, twinkling feldspar in the granite gives Mammoth Mountain and its environs a pinkish hue (think sunset in the Ojai Valley). Deep lakes pop like cerulean dinner plates on a forest-green cloth of pines. It took me more than 40 years to realize Mammoth doesn’t melt away come springtime. The Mammoth I grew up with was always about the white stuff: sledding on trashcan lids, skis, cardboard, whatever slid mindlessly; the cabin redolent of wood smoke; the outdoor Jacuzzi shrouded in steam. In summer, the landscape unveiled is a different animal, though it remains ceaselessly beautiful and vast after the last chairlift grinds to a halt. The air retains a familiar highelevation clarity, and the five-and-a-half-hour drive from Ventura County—a cliché of California: surf in the morning, ski in the afternoon—is even easier without chains or snow tires. Nowadays you can even hop commercial flights into Mammoth-Yosemite Airport, just six miles east of town. To be sure, Mammoth has changed since my visits in the seventies and eighties. There’s now a ski museum and, even more telling, an outlet mall—in case you need a Coach bag for your fishing lures. Accommodations, too, have evolved. Take The Lodges at Snowcreek Resort, which were completed in spring 2007. Constructed with rough-hewn timber, the twoand three-bedroom homes (ours also had a loft, perfect for kids) are spacious enough for two families to share comfortably. The interiors boast something of a rustic Western theme, but modern kitchens and luxe amenities hint at a price tag that starts at $689,000 and goes up to $2 million. Which isn’t to suggest you have to pay to play. As weekend renters, we were privy to the perks of ownership, including access to the 30,000-square-foot athletic club with its indoor and outdoor pools, spa, and bistro. Renters also gain access to a Ted Robinson-designed golf course, if that’s your game. Our family’s weekend getaway coincided with the Mammoth Lakes Jazz Jubilee (mammothjazz.org), an annual festival that takes place at a smattering of outdoor sites around town. It’s sort of a condensed version of the Ventura Music Festival, but the performances go down within walking distance of one another, which allowed us to meander freely from zydeco to Dixieland, swing to contemporary jazz. Turns out the area is a hotbed of summer festivals. And not just folksy gatherings of acoustic guitarists and arts and crafts booths. Top-shelf winemakers (Mammoth Festival) and legendary musicians like Robert Cray (2011 Festival of Beers & Bluesapalooza) make their way to Mammoth during the warm months. While the dining scene has developed along with everything else, comfort food eateries like Burgers Restaurant and The Stove—a locals’ favorite since 1972 that bills itself as “country cookin’”—are still the most popular places. There’s just something right about a bacon burger or an Everest of steaming flapjacks in this setting. And really, if you’re concerned about may 2011

Left, top to bottom: As the snow melts, Mammoth comes alive with color. The gondola ascends 11,053 feet to the summit, where views span over 400 miles. The Lodges at Snowcreek provide the comforts of a luxe home and access to the resort’s amenities. Top right: Summer unveils a brilliant landscape in the Sierras.

calories there are plenty of ways to work those off, even without skis, from casual hikes to serious mountain bike trails. Kamikaze cyclists gear up and hop the gondola to bomb the 11,053foot mountain at top speed. We went for the view: 360 degrees over 400 miles of high elevation peaks. I’d been there before, to the top of the mountain, on that same spot. But never without snow. Never just to look around and share with my wife and daughter a bright new perspective on our state. At 11,053 feet our little girl hops off the gondola. She’s thrilled, her eyes are like saucers. Her breath shows as quick, shallow puffs of steam. She’s right to be thrilled. It’s an awe-inspiring panorama. It makes me think of John Muir, the California conservationist who dedicated his life to preserving views like this. “How glorious a greeting the sun gives the mountain,” Muir wrote in his 1911 book My First Summer in the Sierras. I turn to ask our future Sierraphile what she thinks but she’s suddenly off, shoelaces trailing behind. “Look, guys!” she squeals, pointing at a rambunctious shepherd, “a doggie, a doggie!” Yes, it’s quite a view from atop the mountain. Everywhere you look. v

GETTING TO MAMMOTH ON THE ROAD From Ventura County, take CA-126 E. to I-5 N. to CA-14 N. to U.S.-395 N. to CA-203 toward Mammoth Lakes. Driving time is approximately five-and-a-half hours. IN THE AIR Direct flights from LAX to the Mammoth-Yosemite Airport take about an hour, and from there it’s only six miles to town. Plan your trip online at mammothmountain.com.

WHERE TO STAY Snowcreek Resort offers a variety of year-round accommodations. Pet-friendly properties and seasonal specials are available. For detailed information, visit snowcreekresort.com or call 800-544-6007.

Sound Journey

M

Ojai’s Albert Behar takes us tripping into the next generation of art By Andrea Kitay

Music, like art and literature, is a discipline prone to subjective analysis, largely disconnected from its more objective cousins math and science. Live long enough and you’ll watch each new generation in its unique self-expression explore new, sometimes bizarre and always controversial art forms to make sense of the world. In this struggle to express fresh, new ideas, we see glimpses of genius. Enter 19-year old New York University junior Albert Behar, the Ojai-raised music protégé whose mélange of technology and music composition has become a vehicle for his profound disregard of what he sees as the deadening of the internal musician in all of us. A product of homeschooling, early enrollment in community college, and a year abroad in Rennes, France, Behar is on a fast track in the New Music movement. One of his greatest influences has been the kinetic sculpturist and sound artist Gerhard Trimpin, whose Sound Arch installation at the entrance to Libbey Bowl will welcome guests to this year’s Ojai Music Festival. Behar’s intense interest in combining technology, music, and humans is, simply put, cutting edge. And while his senior year will be spent studying French literature in Paris, Behar will spend his free time traveling throughout Eastern Europe researching folk music. VENTANA: I see keyboards and laptops are your instruments of choice. Have you always played the piano?

ALBERT BEHAR: I’ve taken piano lessons since I was little, but struggled with reading music. I had to play everything by ear, which is limiting since part of learning music is reading it. My first piece was with the Ojai Camarada Chorus, which is when I first became interested in composition. VEN: Tell me about your time apprenticing with Trimpin.

AB: It started when I was about 14 and was volunteering at the Ojai Music Festival. Tom Morris, the director of the Festival, knew I was into music, and he suggested I go help Trimpin with his installation: a deconstructed Marimba mobile room. It’s hard to describe, but imagine each Marimba note is its own mobile with a horn, each suspended on the ceiling around the room. These were hooked up to a MIDI input, allowing a keyboard to control the sound. I helped him wire stuff up. When I realized my keyboard and laptop were compatible, I thought I might try one of my compositions on it. I had to call my mom to bring it down, since obviously I didn’t drive. We hit it off, and I was one of three composers who wrote original pieces for the room’s opening a month later. It was this amazing experience, especially at that age. I was completely blown away. A few years later I worked at Trimpin’s studio for a month when he was working on a piece using toy guitars he’d collected over 20 years to create an installation … My job was to open up all these toy guitars and rewire them, basically short circuit the buttons so that the sound would be triggered by a keyboard instead. There were 24 guitars and each made four sounds. Of course, the guitars weren’t in tune with each other, so we couldn’t make a scale. They were more like sound effects. For example, a Barbie guitar said the word “whatever.” We triggered it to say “wha-wha-wha-wha-what-EVER.” VEN: So you weren’t attempting to make music as much as just noise?

AB: (Laughs) That’s philosophical. The music and noise thing. I think it was musical. VEN: Your sextet, The Movement, has four musicians—and two dancers wearing flowing robes and megaphone helmets. What are the helmets for?

AB: The music from the bells or keyboard is being sent wirelessly from the laptop to the helmets, so the dancers wearing the helmet basically become human speakers. Normally, speakers sit in the corner. But I was interested in what happens when a speaker can move around the room, and all the different effects of that. Incidentally, [the helmets] are very heavy, like eight pounds each. And directional, with the music only going forward rather than to the sides or

behind, or even inward. VEN: What message should we take away from The Movement’s performances?

AB: It’s about thought amplification. Normally, a megaphone would amplify your voice, but instead it’s music, which are your thoughts. Or this idea about imagination and what happens if I can think of something and it’s amplified so other people can hear it. Instead of the normal way, it’s going where everyone has an input into their ears through ear buds. It’s anti-mp3 or iPod, so instead of putting music in, your thoughts are coming out. VEN: Assuming your thoughts are music or, at least, that music represents your thoughts.

AB: Right. I think everyone can have musical ideas. It’s total oppression of the recording music establishment to pipe in songs into everyone’s ears. Then the part of your brain that makes music, which every human has, is not being used at all. It’s not just for musicians, it’s for everybody. VEN: Your music falls into the “New Music” genre, but you consider yourself a sound artist. What exactly is Sound Art?

AB: Sound Art uses MIDI technology, which is like a remote control for your TV. For example, when I press down on middle C on my keyboard, it sends a numbered signal to a processor, which then sends an electric signal to whatever device I connect it to: the toy guitars, for example. VEN: Where do you draw the line between composing and creating Sound Art?

AB: I think about that a lot. Composition has to do with notated music. It’s a little like “what’s a composer and what’s a songwriter?” Both write music. But I think composition comes from this tradition, even if it’s going against the tradition of Bach and Beethoven. Composition is in a concert environment. Sound Art can be in a gallery or on the street. For me, The Movement is like sonic graffiti. Artists who can’t get their stuff in a gallery will be like, “You know what, I’m just gonna spray paint walls.” I thought, what if I just wore my music on my head and got an audience like that? The difference is more context than anything. VEN: You got a ticket for creating unnecessary noise in the New York subway. What was that all about?

AB: The whole plan was to enter the subways and pipe music through the helmets, but we didn’t realize the headquarters for the subway police are in Union Square. In New York, you’re not allowed to have amplified noise in public, so we were ticketed because of the amplification. I went to the MTA and fought it and won. VEN: Where do you and Trimpin diverge in terms of your work styles?

AB: Despite his being a huge influence, the greatest difference is that a lot of his work doesn’t have humans in it; it’s all machines. His work helps people see sounds. Normally you’d hear sounds, but we’re living in such a visual culture. In a lot of his installations, you can see the motor, then a flash, and make the connection. I’m more interested in putting humans and machines together in really odd ways. Like the human speakers. VEN: What are your aspirations for The Movement?

AB: I’d love to perform all around the world. It’s always been my goal to get my music to as many people as want to listen to it. Or don’t want to listen to it! v Read (and hear) more online at albertbehar.com. The Ojai Music Festival takes place June 9-12. For tickets and information, visit ojaifestival.org.

You Can Bring it Home

One is Ventura’s maestro of tourism. The other, a violin dealer with clients around the world. A look into the travel-centric abode of Jim Luttjohann and Steve Eddy

W

By Leslie A. Westbrook Photography by Gaszton Gal Attempting to set up a visit to the fab pad of Jim Luttjohann and his partner, Steve Eddy, goes something like this: “Well, I might be out of town,” says the ever-busy Jim, explaining that the day I suggested was his birthday and that his partner “better have something good planned!” Some days later, on the phone, Steve jokes, “Why is the photographer only taking one picture for this story after we cleaned the house?” From there it’s pretty much a free for all. Boys will be boys, and these two are about as rascally as they come. Although Steve may hold the title for most sarcastic yet sweetest guy in Ventura County, both are hardworking and serious—when the occasion calls for it. Frick and Frack, George and Gracie, Laurel and Hardy, Cheech and Chong… Think of a famous comedy team—then add The Jim and Steve Show. Steve deals in violins. Jim deals in tourism. Steve is a bit of a recluse; Jim is a gregarious people-person. Steve is the big collector; Jim the curator. Whatever their respective roles, the two have created a beautiful, aesthetically-pleasing home filled with family heirlooms, Stickley furniture, paintings by Ventura artists, and mementos from their globetrotting that enhances their well-traveled, 17-year-long relationship.

Above: In the living room, a pair of 19th century altar angels from South America watch over a David Linn painting. Roseville and Rookwood pottery and first edition books add to the artistic effect of the Gustav Stickley bookcase, chairs, and footstool.

It is not surprising that Jim, the executive director of the Ventura Visitors & Convention Bureau, a man steeped in the hospitality trade day in and day out, is eager to hit the road whenever possible. Steve is a violin dealer with clients around the world and a travel aficionado who just happened to be planning a weeklong Caribbean cruise when we spoke. The couple’s penchant for collecting art, antiques, linens, and foodstuffs on their travels is evident throughout their local home. But in addition to Southwest art and antique pickings, which are tempting and plentiful in New Mexico, they even purchased a vacation home there on one of their trips. “One weekend in Santa Fe, we went into the Adobe Gallery, a favorite spot for antiques,” Jim recalled. “We spotted a Craftsman-era lawyer’s bookcase in perfect condition. While Steve negotiated the price, I circled the block, in heavy snow, looking for a parking spot. I spotted a For Sale – Open House sign in a condominium compound and decided that could solve the parking problem.” After walking through the open house, Jim made his way to the gallery. A couple days later he brought Steve to see the place and they made an offer on the spot before rushing to pick up the carefully wrapped bookcase and driving back to Ventura County. “All in all, it was a very expensive bookcase,” he joked. may 2011

Jim, a native Californian, grew up primarily in Big Bear. His family traveled frequently, both in and out of the country. Steve was born and raised in Ventura, but his family history is steeped in the Southwest. His great-great grandmother, a dentist in Flagstaff in the late 19th century, would often trade dental services for Native American jewelry, art, baskets, and rugs. Steve’s love of these inherited items is evident in the way they are displayed throughout their 1920s Spanish Revival home. Treasures are plentiful, including paintings by Sherry Loehr and other California artists; a 19th century retablo of the Madonna; pottery by Ojai ceramicists Beatrice Wood and Otto Heino, as well as Steven’s own pottery (offered for sale at the Santa Paula Art Museum); a magnificent Navajo candelabra from Steve’s grandmother; and a Korean wedding tansu, as

well as a table given to Steven by his students in Korea when he taught English there in the 1990s. There’s Acoma, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, and Isleta pueblos pottery. A Monterey- style desk was passed down from Steve’s great grandfather. An Apache basket is described as “a lucky find.” From Hupa hats to sand paintings, it’s fair to say that Casa de Jim and Steve constitutes a museum in its own right. In addition to their precious cargo, the house is also home to four finches, three cockatiels, a greenchecked Conure (a small parrot), a trio of cats, and one canine: Mina, a Pomeranian. And what about the animal menagerie when the Jim and Steve show hits the road? “We have wonderful pet sitters,” says Jim, “We had a cat named Klaus that went everywhere—Mammoth, Lake Tahoe, Seattle—he loved road trips.” v

Steve Eddy seeks out rare violins on trips to Italy and around the world, as well as right here in Ventura County. For information, email steveeddy@mac.com or call 805-816-7941. There’s more to Ventura than you may know. Keep up to speed with happenings in the county seat by visiting ventura-usa.com.

TRAVEL

CHRIS MCLENNAN

The eastern coast of Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand.

At Home on the Flipside

A

A California native rediscovers the Golden State—in all its wine producing, poppy growing glory—on the opposite side of the globe BY DIANE COVINGTON AS A NATIVE CALIFORNIAN, I’ve lived up and down the coast from San Diego to San Francisco. I feel a sense of pride and wonder at our state—the majestic mountains, expansive deserts, and white sand beaches. We make great wines, grow luscious fruits and robust vegetables, and tend to lead the way in thinking and trends for the rest of the country. So I was caught off guard when I discovered a place on the other side of the planet that reminded me so much of home. This past winter, a friend invited me to visit him in New Zealand. He promised hiking, kayaking, deserted white sand beaches … even mountains and glaciers. Why not, I thought? It’s winter here, summer there. So on a dreary February day, with Ventura County already soaked and expecting more rain, I packed a bag with little more than bathing suits, tank tops, and flip-flops and boarded Air New Zealand for the 12-hour flight to Auckland. Dinner, a movie, some sleep, breakfast, and I was going through customs, getting that #think# of the stamp on my passport. That was easy.

I landed at 5 a.m. local time, but the airline staff greeted me with a smile at baggage claim and helped me to navigate finding my bags and checking them again for my second flight. (No language barrier here, just a charming accent.) They even let me use their phone to call my friend to tell him I’d caught an earlier connecting flight to Nelson, where he lived. On my short hop to Nelson, at the northern end of the South Island, the smaller plane allowed clear views of the green islands below, and so much water. In Nelson, the airport reminded me of the one in Santa Barbara: small and relaxed. The air felt soft and warm. I kept catching myself thinking, “Have I been here before?” As the sunny days unwound, full of ocean swims, sips of local wines, tastes of local produce and fresh seafood, the familiarity continued. I even spotted some California poppies growing along the road. I discovered that New Zealand may be a tiny island nation, but it offers big magic. And you just might find yourself feeling right at home— on the flipside of the world.  MAY 2011

FLIGHTS FROM L.A.X.

With glaciers to hike on, mountain lakes to dip into, beaches, hiking, kayaking, and bicycling, New Zealand is paradise for lovers of the Great Outdoors. Liability insurance is not required. Popular adventure excursions include bungee jumping, river rafting, and canyoning, to name a few. For general information, visit newzealand.com.

Air New Zealand offers cuddle class. Their “Skycouches” take up the first 11 rows of economy in the new Boeing 777-300 planes. Three seats fold out to create a pillowed flat space that stretches to the next row. You pay for two seats at standard prices and the third seat at half-price. It works out particularly well for couples and families traveling with small children. Premium economy “Spaceseats” sit two abreast, rather than three. More information at airnewzealand.com. ON THE ROAD

NORTHWEST AND SOUTH Sheltering mountains give Nelson (nelsonnz. com)—located in the northwest corner of the South Island—a sunny climate year-round. With the long beaches, boutique wineries, locally grown produce, and fresh seafood, Californians will feel right at home. Drive through lush green valleys along the Mapua, Motueka, and Moutere highways. Camp or kayak the stunning on the stunning coastline of Abel Tasman National Park. Discover Golden Bay, between Kahurangi and Abel Tasman national parks, home to the Farewell Spit Bird Sanctuary, Whariki Beach, and the quaint town of Takaka.

Renting a camper van is a good option. It allows you to travel at your own pace, stopping at national parks and other local attractions. Escape Rentals (escaperentals.co.nz) offers colorful, hand-painted vans at reasonable prices. Camper Travel (campertravel.co.nz) also has a variety of (less colorful) options. LOOPS AND VIEWS Do loops and aerobatics, or just enjoy the breathtaking views of Abel Tasman National Park and the lush green valleys below, as you co-pilot an open-air, two-seater Pitts Special Stunt Plane in Motueka, near Nelson. (Don’t worry, the pilot sits behind you.) See uflyextreme.co.nz.

a new SOLITAIRE My client wanted to create a contemporary look, yet retain the square outline of the original setting for her main diamond. So I’ve created a new form of the traditional “fishtail” setting style that was used many years ago. But instead of making the heavy looking cube with the fishtail corners, I created a modern setting that would secure the diamond just as well, yet wouldn’t be heavy looking and is open to the light. Her ring is being done in yellow & white gold, the production version will be in all 19K white gold.
