editor’s note
TO SPRING, OR TO FALL T
io Juan is a Chilean fisherman who looks like a Greek fisherman. Oily coils of hair frame the exhibition of distressed leather and bushy brown mustache that is his face. A prominent nose announces his presence. Light green eyes. And that mustache: east and west it spreads before turning southward toward the bottom of the world, twitching in time with his smile and the machine gun fire of his pueblo patois. Across the street, a huckster peddles Bolivian trinkets; a town gossip eyes the scene, hunting fodder; and a shopkeeper throws open her corrugated metal door to reveal a forest of woolen sweaters, gloves, and beanies. On the adjacent dirt road, a pack of mutts forms an orgiastic bubble around a bitch in heat. The air smells of fish and French fries and freshly baked bread, of dust and diesel. Here in el centro on this fog-shrouded morning in mid-April, 2012, autumn in the southern hemisphere, I don’t feel particularly far from home. Yes, the seasons are reversed. The night sky is different too. Yet I see the faces of California characters and the daily routines of my Ventura County neighbors in these people. Travel is frequently discussed in terms of the exotic—of striking differences and cultural oddities. Them and us. But hombre please, do you really think there’s a world of difference between that papas fritas stand over there and a Ventura Avenue donut shop? To be sure, this dusty Chilean pueblo—like everywhere I’ve been, from the back alleys of Beijing to Java and Johannesburg—is a microcosm of the world at large; anywhere you travel, human similarities outweigh cultural distinctions by a ton. Acclaimed photojournalist Michael Robinson Chávez, an old friend of mine, has been to Chile several times, twice to visit me during my expatriate years, and, more recently, to cover the devastation of an 8.8-magnitude earthquake that buckled the ocean floor a little south of this very corner—my present workspace, an appropriate spot to write the lead into our annual Travel Issue. 6

A Ventura County native currently living in Moorpark, Michael has covered assignments in more than 45 countries. His work has been exhibited the world over. But his heart lies in Peru. Our photo essay (page 38) offers only a small taste of the imagery he’s made there over the years. For more, log on to robinsonchavez.com, which includes a link to his recently published book of black-and-white photographs from his mother’s homeland, entitled “Awaiting the Rain.” Ventura-based writer Ken McAlpine creates images of a different kind. While the superb photography of his traveling partner, Norbert Wu (norbertwu.com), certainly helps float his story about rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon (page 14), I saw this article as something of a word-driven, domestic counterpoint to the Robinson Chávez photo essay. So we present a sampling of the world, its people and its geography, national and international—with a local spin—in color and in black-andwhite. On page 25 there’s an interview with Lyn Hebenstreit, an Ojai philanthropist who has embraced Africa and dedicated himself and his family to the “culture of peace.” Record producer Michael Cord (page 31) opens his doors to share the travel-inspired home he and his wife, Maryann, built as part of a musical bridge connecting Ventura and the Pacific Rim. And now, back at my own home—my first home—in western Ventura County, with a spring rain beating down and the musty smell of decay and life anew coming through my window, that dusty corner of el centro 6,000 miles away doesn’t seem terribly distant. “It’s a great big world out there,” they say. But I’m not so sure. Really, how grand is the canyon between Old World and New, between the people of Africa and the people of Ojai, between a South American fishing village and its Mediterranean doppelganger? The way I see it: for every tio Juan, there’s an uncle John. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Atop the Emerald Isle An Irish-themed FUNdraiser for the Ventura County Rescue Mission On March 17, the Tower Club (towercluboxnard.com), located on the 22nd floor of the Morgan Stanley building in Oxnard, opened its private restaurant, bar, and dance floor to the general public for a membership mixer in support of the Ventura County Rescue Mission. Camarillo’s Tom Colbert and his six siblings have hosted an annual FUNdraiser/St. Patrick’s Day party since 1982. This year, two prominent local families sponsored the gathering: Tom and Priscilla Van Gundy, owners of Van Gundy Jewelers (vangundys.com) offered raffle items, while Jack and Maral Barsoumian of Oxnard-based Amoretti (amoretti.com) put on a “Blind-Folded Martini Tasting Contest.”
VENTURA COUNTY RESCUE MISSION With the support of the community, the Ventura County Rescue Mission offers refuge, recovery, and restoration to people in need. For detailed information, visit vcrescuemission.org or call 805.487.1234.

Community: Evening d’Elegance | National Charity League Juniors of Ventura County Priceless cars and luxe goods helped bring “hope close to home” at the 8th annual NCL Juniors of Ventura County gala to benefit the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disease Program at Ventura County Medical Center. Held at the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, the gala featured fabulous auctions, local wines, and specialty cocktails served in Peter Mullin’s incomparable homage to Art Deco and the machine age. Until recently, local children with cancer and blood diseases had to travel out of the county for care. Now, through the generosity of local sponsors and donors, top-quality care is available in our backyard. The NCL Juniors of Ventura County have raised approximately $700,000 for the program’s expansion and ongoing needs.

t is a place where day and night arrive in their own languid time. Where all is sky, rock, and river. Where sun and moon touch rocks 1.7 billion years old, where water moves with a force that can pretzel steel and the creak of oars is the loudest sound, where bighorn sheep follow your progress perched on ledges little wider than a pin, and within a mossy nook, if you turn your head just so, a waterfall creates a gauzy rainbow the size of a fingernail. These are just words, and when it comes to the rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon words fail miserably. Numbers too. Between Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Mead, the Colorado River flows 255 miles. The river’s average depth is 35 feet; its average speed is four miles an hour; its temperature, coming as it does from the depths of Glen Canyon Dam, ranges from 48 to 52 degrees. There are more than 160 rapids within the Canyon’s confines; in some, the river’s speed increases appreciably. The soul is not touched by statistics. Count to three. A complimentary fruitcake to anyone who can remember any but these three numbers. “I was told rafting through the Grand Canyon would be the best experience of my life,” a woman once told me. “And rafting the Grand Canyon would be the second best experience of my life, and the third…” Such whispers had reached me for years. And so I decided to take the only possible course. I went to see for myself. Here’s the best thing about rafting down the Colorado: Unlike other grand adventures—climbing Everest, meditating with puff adders—pretty much anyone can do it. Sign

on with a river outfitter, and most companies require only that you be at least 12 years old for an oar trip, and eight to ride in a motorized craft. Other than that, you just have to adjust to a single pertinent reality. “Some people really embrace the solitude, and some people don’t expect it,” smiled Christian Seamans, on the drizzly October morning of our own departure from Lees Ferry. Christian dipped his oars into the cocoa-brown Colorado and smiled again. “Welcome everyone,” he said, as we moved out into the main current. “It’s always nice to push away.” Enjoying nature is about pushing away, and all of us—19 paying customers who had signed on for a 13-day oar trip with Wilderness River Adventures—had ensured ourselves additional solitude by coming to the river in October. It is something of a secret, and I will likely be tossed into the Colorado tied to an anvil for saying so in print, but fall and spring are the river’s unsung seasons; quieter, cooler, heavier with repose. In July, the average high in the Canyon is 106 degrees. In October, it is 85, and the low, on average, is a still quite pleasant 59. In summer, 150 people a day put on to the river at Lees Ferry, 15 miles below Glen Canyon Dam, and plenty more would join them if the Park Service didn’t enforce this cap. On the morning we left, three other groups were starting off too. Over the next 13 days we saw them now and again, but mostly it was just us. October offers a final plus. No motorized craft are allowed on the river after mid-September, making it easier to hear a raven’s wing beat, and the sound of your own heart in the last wink of silence before a rapid’s roar.
Our days unfolded in languid fashion. We woke, warm in our sleeping bags, to cool silence on white sand beaches, the tops of the canyon walls catching the first tracings of dawn. Breakfast followed, the smell of coffee and bacon residing beside the river, and then the guides would break down camp and pack their respective boats, meticulously lashing down heaping piles of gear like fussy Moms. By nine, we would be on the river. Though much ado is—rightly—made of the Colorado’s vaunted rapids, most of the river is rapidless. Yes, there are more than 160 rapids between Lees Ferry and Lake Mead, but they comprise nine percent of that section of river. And so we floated, lazy as a dream, between brown river and blue sky, the canyon walls ever rearing up on both sides, while

Our existence mirrored the river’s, and the river, in turn, proceeded like life, long spells of quiet interspersed with wild bouts of feverish activity.
Our Wilderness guides proved supremely competent, but they didn’t take their competency too seriously, preferring instead to dye their hair green, announce dinner with a Gregorian chant, and even, on the proper occasion, wear women’s underwear (one night we had a costume party). My fellow adventurers had come to the river for different reasons, but each grasped the significance of what was transpiring. “It has always been a dream of mine to raft the Grand Canyon,” Reimund Wolf told me on our first night in camp. Reimund had traveled from Germany. We stood beside the river. A half moon, poised above a dark shadow of butte, threw silver on the river. “I knew I must come here,” said Reimund. “I am 65. I can see the horizon.”
beneath the boat the river made small commotions and fidgets. Great Blue Herons, dragonflies, gossamer strands of spider webs, they all wafted past us at a syrupy pace. Late in the afternoon we would bump up against an empty beach and, in short order, we would be dining on shrimp scampi or prime rib, tiki torches throwing flickering light on the sand. My favorite time came after dinner, when the guides recounted stories of explorers and river runners, folks like John Wesley Powell who went down the river with one arm, wood boats, scarce and spoiling supplies, and no surfeit of determination and courage. We would listen appreciatively, our bellies digesting brownies fresh from the Dutch oven, sparks from the campfire drifting up to join the stars. My personal heroes were Bill Beer and John Daggett, who, in the spring of 1955, swam 280 miles down the Colorado, rapids and all. Many thought them crazy. “…We felt infinitesimal,” Beer said later. “It was hardly important whether we continued or quit, whether we lived or died. We were intruders who meant nothing.” Saner words were never spoken. Our existence mirrored the river’s, and the river, in turn, proceeded like life, long spells of quiet interspersed with wild bouts of feverish activity. Because yes, there were the rapids. Again, floods of words have tried to define the Colorado’s rapids—infamous torrents like Crystal, Hance, and Lava Falls. I will say only this. Those rapids, and others you have never heard of, are a force of nature that should be met at least once in your life. For the 19,000-plus folk who proceed down the Colorado each year, the rapids are a wet and wonderful Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. But they have may 2012

Though her whitewater garners the lion’s share of attention, the Colorado River is largely rapidless. It’s a quiet ride, until suddenly you’re “dancing with a psychotic partner.”
meted out injury and death too, which, of course, adds to the thrill. As we floated deep into the Canyon, the river began to take on a decided cant. We could actually see the river dropping away, an odd sight that leads one to better understand the trepidation of ancient mariners convinced they would drop off the edge of the world. The Colorado’s closest approximation to this is Lava Falls, 179 miles downriver from Lees Ferry, and the granddaddy of them all. As its name implies, it begins with an attention getting spillover. Then all hell breaks loose. Running a rapid is like dancing with a psychotic partner; all proceeds smoothly until you step out of line, and then you are slapped, throttled and otherwise rudely mistreated. In the case of Lava Falls, the partner is trebly psychotic, the drubbing proportionately severe. Rafts flip. They wrap around rocks. And you go for a memorable swim. Lava arrived on the second to last day of our trip. It was hot and sunny. A half-mile away the river was nearly still, as if holding its breath. Then we heard the sound, like the thunder of horses. From the bow of Okie’s boat, I peered ahead. Over the passing days I had noticed how, from upstream, the bigger rapids looked like the splashing of children at play. These children were also blowing mist. We pulled ashore just upstream to scout Lava, hiking up a short trail. Sweat was funneling into bodily crannies I didn’t know existed. I

noticed with detached interest that I still had my life preserver on. We crowded together at the edge of the small overlook, and looked down. Viewed from above, Lava looks like one of those whitewater broils that precede the surfacing of some monstrous sea creature. There were badly placed rocks too, and enormous waves that rose and crashed, followed immediately by more enormous waves that did the same; a train wreck that never ended. The guides studied the rapid and spoke quietly to each other. Our trip leader, Okie, turned on his heels. “My boat, we’re going.” Lava Falls is a short rapid. I have little recollection of the run. Okie followed a slick tongue of water that moved dreamily toward the ledge. The oar locks creaked as he applied pressure, then the boat lurched and bounded and everything disappeared. Water enveloped us; not cold, not violent, only heavy and pressing away the world. And then it was gone and we were through, and Okie had yanked us into a small notch of eddy against the shore, and everyone was talking at once. The river, and the moment, was passing. I stood there trying to remember it all. The sun and wet on my face, the slap of small waves rocking the boat, the giddy closeness I felt for my companions, a small lizard, an arm’s length away, nipping ants off a rock. v

Sweet smiles belie a serious situation. These kids were fetching water from a contaminated spring while GRA was drilling a borehole for the local hospital.
The
Culture of Peace
A conversation about orphans, water, permaculture, and embarrassingly simple solutions to complex global problems. By Leslie A. Westbrook
I
n 2002, with an eye toward social, economic, and environmental change, Ojai resident Lyn Hebenstreit founded Global Resource Alliance to provide financial and technical support to community organizations in the world’s least developed regions. We caught up with him in cyberspace—between here and Tanzania, Africa, where he spends several months a year working on projects. So goes publishing these days. LESLIE WESTBROOK: Jambo Rafiki! How are things in Tanzania? LYN Hebenstreit: Life is hard in Tanzania; it’s more challenging now than at any other time in the past 10 years. Global economic dislocations reach even the remotest villages in the form of deteriorating exchange rates and higher prices for imported goods, fuel, energy, and food. Life and death are close neighbors here. LW: How did you come up with the idea to start your nonprofit? LH: Global Resource Alliance (GRA) was born of necessity—not mine, but that of community organizations here in Musoma, Tanzania. The groups that I first assisted as a volunteer in 2001 had capable staffs and impressive plans for community service but almost no money to put those plans into action. GRA was started to raise funds and offer technical services to help these groups succeed. LW: What pulled your heartstrings? LH: The appalling conditions facing hundreds of orphans in the Musoma area was the first thing to grab my attention. Without assistance, many of these kids were headed for a future of poverty, fear, hopelessness, and crime or prostitution, their hidden potentials never revealed. Hundreds of these kids have benefitted from GRA programs over the past 10 years. Some are now on their way to becoming college graduates, in fact. But the scope of the problem is so vast, we’re hardly able to make a dent.
LW: I understand your project has three main components: water resource development, permaculture, and support for orphans. Can you tell us a little about each of these? LH: Lack of access to clean water is by far the biggest challenge for most rural communities in East Africa. It’s only after working here several years and hearing countless stories of the suffering caused by bad water, or no water, that we summoned the courage to undertake a water project. We had no idea how difficult, nor how expensive, such a project can be. Fortunately, the finances and volunteer expertise came together and we’ve been able to complete over 50 successful hard-rock boreholes (safe, long-lasting wells drilled deep into bedrock) serving many thousands of people. Challenges remain, of course. We constantly battle to keep our equipment working properly, and spend much time and effort training communities how to manage and maintain their boreholes so that the life-saving water will continue to flow. Our second major program area is permaculture. My favorite definition of permaculture is “a diverse, complex ecosystem where the elements interact in mutually beneficial ways to produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.” It’s a system of organic agriculture and human settlement that mimics the ways of nature to maximize output, including environmental enhancement, and minimize inputs. The project has slowly developed into three demonstration plots that serve as training centers for local and international student/farmers and provide fresh, organic food for GRA-Tanzania staff and about 70 families caring for orphans in a local village. As I said before, care for orphans is where our work began. We now operate two projects through GRA-Tanzania. One, in Musoma town, has about 75 kids enrolled who live with foster families in the community and meet weekly at our office compound to play, sing, dance, draw, receive extra food for themselves and their families, pick up school supplies, soap, etc. They also receive tutoring and counseling as appropriate, and periodic health services. support them through high school or vocational school, or through college for those who can qualify. Our other project, in rural Kinesi Village, is similar, but with more attention devoted to food security through permaculture. LW: You spend several months at a time in the Lake Victoria region of Tanzania. Tell me about living there while working on your project as opposed to passing through as a tourist. LH: I think I’ll always be part tourist. I’ve spent about one-third of the last 10 years living in the same hotel room here in Musoma. We don’t get many tourists in Musoma, but if we did, they’d probably end up at a hotel like mine. The biggest difference, I guess, is that I have the opportunity to get to know many of the local residents on close, personal terms. Many are like family. LW: On your website, you reference a quote about “embarrassingly simple” solutions to complex global problems. Can you comment on that? LH: Yes, that’s one of my favorite quotes from Bill Mollison, the guy who co-founded permaculture back in the 1970s. It’s so true—and not just in poor, developing countries. An embarrassingly simple solution to environmental degradation, for example, is to simply stop destroying the environment: stop poisoning the soil with chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides, buy cars that consume less fuel, walk and bike more, compost, recycle, etc. For just about every problem humanity faces, simple, natural, life affirming solutions exist. And they’re usually more effective and more economical in the long run than conventional approaches. LW: Your wife, Tara Maria Blasco, and daughter, Monica Marshall, are also involved. Can you share something about your family dynamics and how you divvy up the duties? LH: As president, I try to assure that Tara and Monica do most of the work. Quite honestly, GRA would never have experienced the success it has, nor be able to function as we are now, without their talents and constant efforts. My responsibilities include the water project, accounting, and finance, both in the U.S. and in Tanzania. Tara coordinates permaculture, herbal medicine, alternative cooking technologies, and the orphans projects. Monica has been to Tanzania two times, but works mostly from Ojai developing and maintaining our websites, writing 26

newsletters, and organizing events and other projects that support our work. LW: What sort of stumbling blocks have you encountered? LH: Without a doubt, the most difficult and unexpected experience we’ve had to deal with is betrayal of trust by two of our closest collaborators in Tanzania. GRA-Tanzania has 24 employees, and a little small-scale pilfering is expected—as I said, life is hard. But it’s very discouraging when you discover that thousands of badly needed dollars have disappeared into the pockets of one of your most trusted colleagues. LW: You had an angel donor—a big stakes Vegas poker player, as I recall—who helped get your organization off the ground. Since that’s no longer the bulk of your support, how viable is it going to be for you to continue this project? LH: Our poker playing angel appeared miraculously about three years ago. His support was a great blessing while it lasted, but now that it’s gone we’re focusing more on a financially self-sustaining project model. This is where we’ve been headed for years, and now we have some real motivation. I think that social entrepreneurship is a better approach than “charity” in general, although both have their role. We’re simply moving even further now in the direction of the former. LW: How can people get involved? What’s most needed? LH: Over the years, GRA has had many volunteers, both in the U.S. and in Tanzania. As an allvolunteer organization, expertise in any of our program areas is always most welcome. Help with public relations, filmmaking, writing, and other creative efforts are also very valuable. A young documentary filmmaker, for example, joined us a couple years ago in Tanzania and produced a short DVD called From the Mara Soil. It’s won several film festival awards and attracts favorable attention everywhere it’s shown. Of course, financial support is always needed; people can donate online. v For more information about Global Resource Alliance, an all-volunteer 501 (c) (3) organization, log on to globalresourcealliance.org or call 805.646.4439.

Michael and Maryann Cord had just returned from China when they began their home renovation. Guardian lions watch over the gated entry, as they do at Chinese temples and imperial palaces. A bridge leads to the home’s main entryway.

In the hills of Ventura, a contemporary view home embraces the owners’ love of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim. By Mark Storer Photos by Gaszton Gal
O
n a hilltop property that overlooks distant islands and waves crashing on a nearby beach, that has a 4,000-square-foot house with a lanai boasting its own outdoor kitchen and fireplace, Michael Cord has found paradise. Again. “I’ve built and sold homes six times,” said Cord. “But this is one special place.” A music producer who has made a career out of his passion for Hawaiian and Asia-Pacific music, Cord and his wife, Maryann, met by chance when he came to Ventura County in the 1980s. Their hilltop home along Terrace Drive in Ventura used to belong to Maryann’s mother, but at that time it was a simple 900-squarefoot bungalow. When the Cords came to take care of her, they promptly razed the structure and, in 2004, built from the ground up a home that pays homage to Hawaii and the Pacific Rim.
Sweeping views are available from every room in the house. “We designed it using Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses as inspiration,” said Cord. Wright’s fame stems largely from his incorporation of natural surroundings being drawn into the home. “The house is designed to give the flow that leads toward the ocean.” One enters through a gate guarded by two “dragon dog” gargoyles and a sophisticated security system. The gate is the entry-point to a bridge over a dry moat, a grassy area where the family dog holds dominion. Up to the front door and, as Terrace Drive is on a slope with the homes built into the hillside, onto the main floor, where the living room and kitchen are located. There are granite countertops, marble floors, and a decidedly Asian theme with Shoji Japanese sliding partition doors. Asian paintings, sculptures, and décor abound, but all point inexorably toward the local view. On a clear day, one can see the arch-shaped rock out at Anacapa Island. 88 May 2012 | ventana | 31
Above: Japanese pond paintings on gold foil hang in a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired marble stairwell. Top center: An antique lacquered screen from Beijing depicts red-crested Chinese white cranes, a symbol of longevity and auspiciousness. The hand-carved birch burrow wood bowl is from Alaska. Opposite top: Longtime cruise gypsies, the Cords wanted to recreate the feeling of standing at the rail of a cruise ship looking out to sea. Opposite bottom: These tribal ancestor sculptures (left) from Jamaica were carved out of ultra-dense lignum vitae wood. The Cords shipped a 300-year-old red lacquer chest from China; the zebra skin is from South Africa; the black lacquer bar and screen are from Shanghai; and the wooden masks on the wall are Balinese.
The home is built for entertaining, the majority of which takes place outside where speakers are built into the patio covers. “We put in surround sound everywhere,” said Cord. Across the lanai, the Cords built a separate apartment for Maryann’s mother, who has since passed away. Now, it remains a kind of retreat for guests or family. “The whole idea of the house was to allow everything to focus on the view,” Cord said. “I’ve been a lot of places all over the world, spent a lot of time in Hawaii and in the East, and Ventura is really the most wonderful place I’ve ever been.” The Asian theme here is not capricious, however. Cord’s love of Hawaiian music runs deep—it led him to the islands and to Japan, and has given him his career. “I fell in love with that music, and I fell in love with the culture,” he said. “It’s part of who I am.” Downstairs, one finds the master bedroom and what Cord refers to as a “storage room.” There are multiple closets, as well as Maryann’s office. The master bathroom features his and her water closets and a steam shower. But the bedroom is fully focused on the view; the bed itself sits center in front of glass doors that open to the lanai. “It’s not a kid-friendly house,” Cord said. “We built it for us, and we don’t have kids.” The result is that the common communication between the floors and the rooms is the lanai, not the hallways or stairwell. Kids could still live in the house, of course, but younger ones might get a little lost trying to find the parents’ room at night. To get from the separate apartment to the main house, one must go outside. Cord’s office is similarly situated: off the
32 | ventana | may 2012
lower level of the lanai with no hallway access to the house. The lanai is no mere patio. A two-level structure, it has a spiral stairway and an L-shaped pattern that allows guests to seek out small alcoves of privacy or join others at the outdoor bar and kitchen on the lower level. Both levels have fireplaces, each radiating enough warmth against the cool Pacific breezes, and a small but elegant swimming pool is centered off the lower lanai. Outside, the dry moat is adjacent to a steep driveway and a garage. The backyard gates, 300-year-old Asian doors (probably Chinese, Cord says), align with the dragon-dog gargoyles. The whole is reminiscent of a feudal Chinese castle. The house’s white color is a stark contrast to the green and sagebrush hillsides, the blue Pacific, and the neighboring houses with their various pastels and earth tones. For the Cords, however, the house is merely an expression of what they love about Ventura itself. As he stood on the lanai, hands on the rail, looking southwest toward Anacapa, Michael Cord summed up the allure: “It’s all about being out here.” v

Permier Furniture LLC is proud to serve Ventura County with quality furniture at value pricing! Located at 1701 E Ventura Blvd., Suite B in Oxnard, we specialize in custom orders with any size, any color options, our sales professionals will design the right fit for you! Come see our new expanded showroom and new location with our expanded line of “made in USA” products. The owners of Midtown Kitchens, Brenda and Rory Stoner, are both Certified Kitchen Designers by the National Kitchen and Bath Association. With over 22 years of experience they can offer a worry-free renovation that involves personally guiding you through every step of the design and remodeling process from concept to completion. One of their clients had this to say about her remodeling experience “.When other people tell me horror stories about their kitchen remodeling experience, I always wonder—should I tell them how great it could have been if they’d known about Brenda & Rory? Or, should I just keep quiet for fear that hearing about my wonderful adventure will only make them feel worse? No kidding, I not only LOVE my new kitchen—I actually enjoyed the experience of creating it. Brenda & Rory started when they said they would, finished when they said they would—and they seemed to have screened their subcontractors on the basis of personality, as well as skill and reliability. I had expected to feel “violated” from having a stream of workers in and out of my house, but instead I was a bit sorry to see them go when they were finished. The result is a thing of beauty that I never get tired of living in—or showing off!” Whether you are looking for traditional design or contemporary, or maybe something in between, Midtown Kitchens an help you create the kitchen you’ve always wanted. If you are looking to remodel your kitchen or bath, call Midtown Kitchens at 643-3063 or come in and meet Brenda and Rory at their showroom, 2122 E. Thompson Blvd. in Midtown Ventura, open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. awaiting the rain Peru in Black-and-White A photo essay by Michael Robinson Chávez
T
he chaos was glorious. Traffic laws seemed a matter of opinion, hawkers barked their offers through scratchy speakers perched on fruit stands, and pedestrians took their lives in their hands sprinting across the potholed streets. Peru in 1988 was a country on the brink; the local currency had the value of confetti and civil war was raging. For an 18-year-old with Peruvian roots who’d grown up in the manicured suburbs of the Conejo Valley, it was beyond eye-opening. Through a beat-up Leica M6 and a bag full of Tri-X, Peru seduced me. It was therapy to relieve the pressures of working in the newspaper world. Freed of editors’

expectations and constricting deadlines, I immersed myself in the art of black-andwhite film and darkroom printing. Peru has changed considerably since that first visit but I am still under her spell. I travel to the Andean nation just about every year. The economy is booming and the old mantra of Peruvians being more accustomed to catastrophe than success is taking on water. My most recent trip was for an assignment: a set of stories for the Los Angeles Times, my current employer. The Leicas are gathering dust in this new digital world. It might be time to clean them up and hit the Andean highway once again. v

May 19 – June 10 | Rubicon Theatre Company, Ventura Rubicon’s first play by August Wilson is also the first chronologically in the playwright’s powerful 10-play series dramatizing the African-American experience in the 20th century. But rather than confess to a crime he didn’t commit, he jumps in the river and becomes a martyr to his coworkers. Riots break out and the workers begin to strike. Against this turbulent backdrop, another young man arrives at the home of Aunt Ester, a 285-year-old healer who is the keeper of tradition and history for her people. She sends Citizen on a spiritual journey aboard the slave ship Gem of the Ocean, where he must learn about his ancestors and then face the truth about himself. $25 - $54. 1006 East Main St., Ventura. Gold & Silver I’m working with a client to make a ring that will match her favorite bracelet. This ring features a diamond set into the silver center section that is ribbed. The ribbing echos the bracelet. This is another one that appears deceptively simple, but was far from it. The edge is in 18K gold. Notice that the gold goes across the bottom of the shank of the ring. This means that it will be easy to size the ring to fit her exactly. Every ring fits the finger a little bit differently. Designing with wearability is one of our basic principles. Part of that is we make sure we can service things like tiny adjustments in the ring size when you first get your ring — or even completely resizing it because you wish to wear it on another finger. Our designs really are all about you.
