editor’s note
who cares?
I
first met Mary Maranville in the parking lot of a local watering hole, and I was pretty sure she’d tipped back one too many. She hadn’t. She hadn’t taken a sip yet. But she has a way about her—the verve of a zealot—and she fixed me with a piercing blueeyed gaze, behind a pointed finger, and let me know with no uncertainty that we were about to discuss a matter of vital importance. Like it or not. Turns out I did like it. But first, something in that woman-on-amission ardor of hers sparked my primitive fight or flight instinct—which I promptly snuffed out, of course, because I’m at least a half step beyond primitive. And besides, she was right. Her story (p. 38) does belong in Ventana. Mary recognized me from a photo that hasn’t been on this Editor’s Note page for years. I’d had her name on our list of potential features for almost as long, but we’d never met, and the timing had never been quite right for an article. We can’t cover everything we’d like to on these pages; some stories just fizzle, others lose their timeliness and never see ink. In this case, pure serendipity led to the editorial green light. But enough behind-the-scenes balderdash. Let’s cut to the present. There comes a time in the evolution of most anything when that thing— whatever it may be: a musical genre, a social movement, a nonprofit—is at its shining peak, a Golden Age before the funds flow and the britches pop a button and power hungry gobblers devour its soul. Mary’s mission to turn Ventura County kids on to agriculture is just entering that sacred space. You could feel it during a recent fire-lit al fresco dinner at Limoneira Ranch. Maybe it was the dusky backdrop of Santa Paula mountain silhouettes, or the rhythmic whisper of Todd Hannigan and friends. Maybe it was the wine. But a pervasive sense of optimism was in the air as local farmers, educators, ag workers, and other interested folks gathered to celebrate the idea of “connecting kids to the farmland in their own backyard.” 6

For now, in this early grassroots phase, SEE AG (Students for EcoEducation and Agriculture) is a nonprofit possessed with the simmering passion of youth. Its purity gives it power. The business of philanthropy is a touchy subject. But the current wave of businesses billing themselves as philanthropic as part of a marketing strategy can be downright flustering. How do we as consumers know if a company actually cares? And really, does it matter? In our interview with socially conscious entrepreneur Gunnar Lovelace (p. 15) we ask him about the triple bottom line movement, or “3BL” as it’s come to be known. To his credit, he doesn’t gloss over the business aspect—the fact that making charitable donations gives his family’s company a competitive advantage, which ultimately leads to higher profits. Higher profits in turn lead to greater charitable giving. But again, how do we know it’s not all a promotional sham, a soon-to-be-hackneyed marketing ploy? Chevron earns billions, then spends millions to clean up its messes with populist advertising campaign slogans like, “Do people care about the environment? People do.” The irony is clear. So how do we know if a company is giving back to give—or giving back to get? Well, we don’t. Not with absolute certainty, anyway; one man’s common sense leads him to the left, another’s to the right. It’s hard work digging through the baked clay of a corporate brand to unearth a business’s true intentions. Business is business, after all. But around here, in the relatively small market of Ventura County, with rootsy 3BL companies like Love Heals and Patagonia, it’s not such a chore. Hey, if you can’t trust your neighbors, who can you trust? — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

Building a New Community Memorial Hospital
e let p CoM
CONSTRUCTION PHASE I CLEARING THE PROPERTy
CONSTRUCTION PHASE II BUILDING THE STEEL STRUCTURE
The official start of construction began as we cleared the site of nearly 4,000 tons of material, of which 90% was recycled.
MOVING THE UTILITIES To provide the necessary utilities for the new hospital, existing gas, water, electric, phone and fiber lines were moved and repositioned.
TEST PILLARS Five test pillars were drilled into the earth and filled with concrete. These pillars were inspected by the State of California to ensure that they would withstand a sizeable earthquake. The pillars passed inspection.
DIGGING “THE HOLE” A total of 80,000 cubic yards of dirt was removed to a depth of 22 feet. On a typical excavation day, 200 to 230 truckloads of dirt were removed from the site.
PHASE II FACTS 7,000,000 Pounds of Structural Steel 365 Miles of Rebar 80,800,000 Pounds of Concrete
STRENGTHENING THE EARTH 2,238 40-feet deep holes were drilled and filled with a concrete slurry to create a new bedrock foundation upon which the hospital will be built.
FOUNDATION ANCHORS In order to ensure the building does not “slide off” or move from its foundation during a major earthquake, carefully positioned steel anchors have been embedded into the new bedrock below. They will be encased in concrete structures and secured to the new hospital – essentially “anchoring” the building to the new bedrock.

3BL: The Business of Philanthropy People. Planet. Profit. Socially conscious entrepreneur Gunnar Lovelace gets to the heart of the triple bottom line. Interview by Leslie A. Westbrook
T
hanksgiving is Gunnar Lovelace’s favorite holiday— one devoid of commercialism and an opportunity to share with others and give thanks. Sharing comes naturally to the 35-year-old co-founder and codesigner of Love Heals who grew up on a five-acre family commune in Upper Ojai. A strong sense of community was instilled in him as a youngster and goes beyond passing the tofu and turkey. It reaches all the way to Ethiopia and beyond. Lovelace left a lucrative job in the Internet industry eight years ago to combine forces with his family and create a socially conscious wholesale and retail jewelry company. The basic business philosophy behind Love Heals is to “give back.” For every piece of jewelry sold, at their retail shop in Ojai or via the wholesale business, Love Heals plants ten trees in Ethiopia. We recently sat with the soft-spoken yet energetic entrepreneur in the shade of an Arcade Plaza sycamore tree to discuss the modern marriage between philanthropy and entrepreneurialism.
Leslie A. Westbrook: Your family’s jewelry business is responsible for the planting of nearly a million trees, mostly in Ethiopia. Why there? Gunnar Lovelace: We’ve done a lot of research on how we can make an impact. We connected with Trees for the Future and their subsidiary Greener Ethiopia. I like their program because it’s very integrative: it isn‘t just planting trees for the sake of planting trees, the organization is also focused on improving the quality of life for the villagers. LAW: What kinds of trees are planted? GL: Mango, papaya, and moringa. We did a lot of tree planting with a lot of different groups. We focused on Ethiopia and permaculture principles because of the carbon reduction from the food-bearing trees we plant. November 2012

“Business is the most powerful force affecting change on the planet. To the extent we can shift the paradigm, a more balanced triple bottom line approach will help create a positive path for a sustainable future.”
LAW: What is moringa? GL: Moringa is a super food, one of the highest protein plants in the world. It even helps new mothers lactate. We have a beautiful program. There are contests with the children to see how many trees they have planted. They tend beehives. The program provides labor, and the water table comes back. LAW: Social issues drive environmental issues, right? GL: A lot of trees are cut down for firewood or clearing land. Wherever there’s a lot of environmental devastation going on, it’s driving a socio-economic situation. By planting functional, food-bearing trees, we get the advantage of carbon reduction. Additionally, the trees will be protected and respected long-term. LAW: How has your background informed your sense of giving back? GL: As a child, we used to have mules; we’d spend one to two months a year in the backcountry with the mules. I developed a deep love of the land and a very intimate connection with the earth and trees. People don’t realize how important trees are. It was a natural progression for us. LAW: In this economy, how can individuals and busi-

nesses afford to tithe? GL: For us, philanthropy has been a natural movement of the heart. But it also makes business sense. In the very competitive fashion marketplace, with increasingly sophisticated and globally concerned consumers, being a socially conscious business is a competitive advantage. It’s a genuine movement of concern and love—and at the same time, in business, it builds brand loyalty and creates a fan base that wants to tell your story. A customer can buy a piece of jewelry that looks like ours, but in many cases they will buy from us because they are willing to spend a little more if they know it’s a socially conscious product. LAW: Guilt-free shopping? GL: I am stunned that more people don’t do it. It’s the most obvious thing in the world. Our mission, in addition to taking care of the families that depend on our business, 25 employees here and three families in Bali, is serving as a role model and being part of the wave of triple bottom line. LAW: Explain the “triple bottom line” movement. GL: People, planet, profit. Triple bottom line companies are a wave of socially conscious companies that recognize that “profit only” is not a viable sustainable model for the human species. There’s a

huge wave of those companies: Numi Tea, New Leaf Paper, Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, Tom’s Shoes... California has been at the forefront, and this model is spreading all over the country and all over the world. Business is the most powerful force affecting change on the planet. To the extent we can shift the paradigm, a more balanced triple bottom line approach will help create a positive path for a sustainable future for our species and life. LAW: Where do see yourself in 20 years? GL: Every week, someone asks me for help with his or her business. I teach workshops and courses on how to run socially conscious businesses. One of the things I tell a person when they want to start a business is that it’s all about the team. You have to have good people and a culture where the team knows its respective individual and collective responsibilities so that the business can execute as a cohesive organism on its mission. A lot of alternative-culture types approach us to work for us. They think we are a loose, causal hippie operation. I tell people right up front in every interview: You can dress however you like, but you have to be on time. We are a peaceful warrior SWAT team on a mission. We’ve had 18

top-performing salespeople who we’ve let go because they were selling the culture of discord and competition inside the business. Our philosophy is a cooperative model of mutual success, not a competitive model. I grew up in a sustainable “intentional” community of 25 people of different ages and backgrounds. It was great training for how to deal with lots of different personality types. That type of upbringing emphasized cooperative, interdependent ways of living and working together, which have been a genesis for the way we run Love Heals. LAW: So what’s next? GL: I am working on a socially conscious business book right now, “Business as Creative Yoga.” The idea is that every act of business is a form of yoga. Spirituality and holistic living happening outside of work. How do we create a culture that’s integrated with a healthy lifestyle? LAW: How did you come up with the name of your business? GL: Most fashion brands are built around a personality cult. We wanted to do something different that was tied to charity. Love Heals was a powerful way for us to communicate that to the market. v

game Changer Coach and youth advocate J.J. Vaivao by mark storer
J
Photography by gary and pierre silva
.J. Vaivao looks out from slightly bloodshot eyes but with a fine wide smile on what is a chiseled face. The Buena High School baseball cap on his head is as sharp and chiseled as he is. He’s tired, and it’s not because he works too hard or is sad. “I love working,” said Vaivao, a landscape caretaker for Ventura County. “I get up around 5 a.m. and work out at the gym; I get to work early if I can and I’m there until around two in the afternoon.” But it’s not work that propels him. And it’s not working out, either. It’s giving back—and answering to the title “coach.” “When my daughter was 11 years old, I got involved in coaching softball for the first time with the Tri-Valley League,” said Vaivao, a native of American Samoa now living in Oxnard. “We were living in Cabrillo Village at the time and I decided to start my own team,” he said. Married to wife Anna, and with four children from a previous marriage, Vaivao is still
drawn to coaching. But it’s not all he does. “I saw some pretty wild things in Cabrillo Village,” said Vaivao. “What was going on there wasn’t good, and I saw they needed a big brother.” He started a youth program, as well as a neighborhood watch program in an area of Ventura County known for crime. While he was at it, Vaivao started a library at Cabrillo Village, mainly for kids. He then got donations from the Boys and Girls Club, as well as the Ventura Athletic Club, and started a gym for them. “I had a lot of partnerships going and a lot of people involved, including the Ventura Police Department’s D.A.R.E. program,” Vaivao said. “They helped us take the kids camping in places like Lake Casitas and Lake Piru and up at El Capitan State Beach. The kids had never seen anything like those places before. We even took them to Anacapa Island. It was great.” It wasn’t all trimmed roses, though. Vaivao got death threats, and a local gang scratched continued on page 37

If it wasn’t for the scholarship program, my daughter and I would not be able to be members. I am a single parent and have a good job, but only make enough to cover our monthly expenses. We are thankful to be alive! Call today to adopt. we started CABODOGZ, our rescue affiliate because we wanted to give back by rescuing homeless dogs and placing them into homes. We rescue dogs both from Cabo, Mexico and the local shelters. Since February 2011, we have rescued and placed over 75 lucky dogs, most of whom are enjoying life in the greater Ventura area. CABODOGZ is committed to both rescue and education: spreading the word about overpopulation of pets.

This year during the holiday season, Casa Pacifica will be providing hope and help to more than 450 abused, neglected, or at-risk children and youth, like Jimmy, as they meet the challenging circumstances that child abuse, and/or at-risk behaviors cause children and their families. In addition to those challenges, during the holiday season extra burdens and expectations are placed on them. Casa Pacifica eases their worries by providing holiday gifts, family baskets, and gift cards to these struggling children and families.

Casa Pacifica Centers for Children and Families was incorporated in 1988 to address an unmet need in our community. The purpose was to create a place where children removed from their homes for abuse and neglect could receive all the services they would need underone-roof. Casa Pacifica’s doors opened in 1994 with its mission to provide hope and help to abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families; and its vision to lead the services sector in promoting healthy outcomes for children and in strengthening families. Since opening the doors of its beautiful Camarillo campus, Casa Pacifica has expanded its programs to include several communitybased services, and most recently services to transitional and emancipated foster youth. In fact, Casa Pacifica has grown to be the largest nonprofit provider of children’s mental health services in both Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, serving more than 15,500 children (ages birth to 18 years) and their families since 1994. “Students who have arts-rich experiences in school do better across-the-board academically…” Arts education offers an opportunity for children to learn creative problem solving skills while emphasizing the uniqueness in all of us. A March 2012 National Endowment for the Arts research report found that students who engage in arts education demonstrate a higher potential in all areas. The study also found, “Students who have arts-rich experiences in school do better across-the-board academically and they also become more active and engaged citizens, voting, volunteering, and generally participating at higher rates than their peers.” All qualities we would like to see in the youth of our community.
Anthony and Sebastian show off their ceramic animal sculptures that they created in a Learning to See residency at Fremont Middle School. FOTM documented artist Albert Stewart is the renowned sculptor who designed the United States Treasury Seal. The careful study of his subjects and years of practice set the example for these young men to aspire to.
Students’ awareness of science and compassion for others is roused by a visit from the Humane Society animals for the lesson in contour line drawing. Learning about FOTM’s documented artists MAD magazine cartoonist, Sergio Aragones, and world renowned wildlife artist, Lindsay Scott, show these Elmhurst Elementary School students how far these valuable lessons can take them.

Students take part in a roundtable discussion lead by FOTM Education Coordinator Aimee French as an integral part of each Learning to See lesson. Here, they are learning about FOTM master artist, Bob Privitt, and the positive and challenging life choices that he has made. Inspired by Bob’s art and life, our students make their own decisions on the materials to use to make their own 2-D/3-D assemblage.
FOTM is seeking interested teachers, parents, organizations and art advocates to bring our award-winning art program, Ad Proof Learning To See, to schools throughout Ventura County. “187 J.J.,” a reference to the police code for murder, into a wall in Cabrillo Village. “But I also still get people saying thank you to me, even now that I don’t live there anymore.” As coach, Vaivao, along with Bill Denino, started his own league, “American Eagle Softball,” which currently boasts eight teams. He handed the reins of American Eagle over to his friends Wendy Carlton and her husband, Larry, and is now the head coach of the junior varsity girls softball team at Buena High School. It’s there he has made his mark as a coach. “I met J.J. when my daughter was nine,” said Denino. “He was coaching a 10-year-old team and my daughter was a year younger. We’d seen him coach, and she wanted to try out because she said she liked what he did. She tried out and J.J. was so good to her, she literally fell in love with him,” he said. “We live in Westlake Village and would drive out to Saticoy to practice, so we drove by Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Camarillo, and Oxnard to get to the Tri-Valley league so she could be coached by J.J.” “I focus on the players, and I try to make playing fun and memorable for them,” said Vaivao. “Seeing those kids happy makes my life a lot better. It’s a blessing to have these experiences.” It must be working, because last year his team came in second place in division play. In 2011, there were 20 girls on the team. This year, 60 girls tried out. “I hate cutting players,” he said. “I wanted to start a freshman team so there’d be room for all of these players, but it takes so much and so long. We didn’t get a chance to do that.” As we sit and talk, a coaching colleague of Vaivao’s, Priscilla Rouse Becker of the Tri-Valley League in Ventura, walks by. They greet each other warmly. “He’s just an incredible contributor to our youth,” she said. “The kids are lucky to have him.” “I hope they’re happy with me,” said Vaivao of his players. “I’m very lucky. I have a beautiful wife and great children, and I love what I’m doing. That’s my main focus.” v

here are 50 of them. They’re no more than four feet tall, a little sweaty from time spent in the sun, and they are ecstatic. They’ve just been let loose in a citrus orchard, and after what feels like hours of waiting, they are finally allowed to pick three pieces of fruit to eat. One runs by me chanting, “Tangerines, tangerines, tangerines!” Another yells to a friend, “It would be so fun to work here!” as a third charges up to his teacher squealing with delight at the three lemons he has selected. The setting? A field trip to Limoneira in Santa Paula. The players? A group of third graders from EARTHS Magnet School in Thousand Oaks. Their mission? To learn more about where their food comes from by experiencing firsthand the journey of a lemon from farm to table. And at the helm of all this controlled chaos and hands-on learning is Mary Maranville—founder of the nonprofit Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEE AG), coordinator of the Ventura County Agricultural Education Program, and board member of Food for Thought: the Ojai Healthy Schools Program. A lovely woman with fierce blue eyes and sun-kissed blond hair, Mary appears to be the epitome of a person doing what they were meant to do. As I spend the morning watching her interact with these children, her giddiness about what she does shines through in every sentence she utters and every question she asks. Effervescent with passion and energy, she is a wonder to watch. Yet, what she is trying to do is actually very simple: teach elementary school children where their food comes from. When they sit down to the dinner table at night, she wants them to see their food differently than they did before. “I want them to know that it came from dirt, that it came from the land...and that it takes a lot of time and energy, patience, and diligence, to get that food to us,” she says.
ABOVE AND RIGHT: Mary Maranville goes into classrooms and out in the field to teach local children about the importance of agriculture. OPPOSITE: Eliza Barroca of Poinsettia Elementary School in Ventura displays her notes from a field trip to Limoneira Ranch.

ary’s program (an offshoot of the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education) is built on two components: classroom presentations where students learn about agriculture in Ventura County, and field trips to Limoneira, where they can see, feel, hear, and taste what goes on at a working ranch. During the 2011-2012 school year, she saw approximately 2,500 kids in the classroom and 2,300 on her field trip excursions. Her program draws students from Oxnard to Oak Park, Fillmore to Port Hueneme. “It sounds like a huge amount,” she says, “but I want to do more.” But for now, her scope is limited, because behind this program, well, it’s really just Mary. Her workday starts at 7 a.m., and she often works more than 60 hours a week. But her work just seems energize her more. “When you show kids a piece of broccoli and they get excited...how can you not get excited?” she asks me as we wander through a stand of orange trees moments before the school bus arrives, bursting with excited third graders. The seeds of Mary’s passion were planted long ago and more than 2,000 miles away, during a childhood spent on a dairy farm in upstate New York. “My father loved farming, and now I know why. I think of him every single day when I’m doing this job. His father did it and his grandfather did it. It’s just a family thing,” she says. But it wasn’t until after a twelve-year career in the cycling industry, at a time when she was looking for a fresh start, that Mary decided she wanted to do something in the way of agriculture. She started by going into the classrooms, but quickly realized that in order to make a real difference, she needed to bring the kids to the farm. “You’d be surprised,” she says, “that most kids don’t know that a carrot is a root.” She approached Limoneira and, after a short while, a partnership was formed.

ohn Chamberlain, the marketing director of Limoneira, says that it was Mary’s entrepreneurial spirit that drew them to her. “She created her own program; she didn’t wait around for someone else to do it. She has a can-do attitude, a true passion for her work, and we like that,” he says. Rachel Meyer—a friend, fellow educator, and SEE AG board member— sees what she does as going well beyond teaching kids where their food comes from; it also helps them see the importance of agriculture to our society. “Mary sees the value of agriculture workers in Ventura County. She wants to elevate them in her students’ eyes, wants them to see it as cool. She’s planting the seed in their minds that this could be a potential career.” And for those students whose families currently work in agriculture, Mary wants to instill in them a sense of pride in what their parents do. As a child, Mary recalls feeling self-conscious about being the daughter of a dairy farmer. “I wish that when I was little someone had come to my school and said ‘Dairy farmers rule!’” she laughs. Looking ahead, Mary hopes to find funding to add a program she calls Careers in Agriculture, where she plans to teach students about the wealth of opportunities in the field. She wants to educate them about the jobs available—from working as a water irrigation specialist, to farm operations manager, to getting a job with the USDA. After these fieldtrips, Mary receives handwritten notes from most of her students. Some are written in cursive, all are written in pencil. Some students write about the fun of wearing a hairnet inside the packing plant, or the sheep that munch the weeds around Limoneira’s solar panels. Others remember the symphony of motion and sound that is the conveyer belts driving lemons through the packing plant; and of course, most mention the fresh squeezed

lemonade served at the end of the morning. But as I read through those stacks of letters at the end of the day, after the last child has climbed back into the school bus, it is apparent that what most have taken away is a new sense of excitement about food, about the process of getting it from the farm to the store and to the table. No longer does a lemon come from the local market. In their minds it now comes from that lemon tree at Limoneira, a tree that they touched and whose blossoms they smelled. Not surprisingly, these letters have become a source of pride for Mary, evidence that she is on the right track. Her face illuminates as she shows them to me; and then Mary, who doesn’t have children of her own, looks at me and says, “Now I feel like I have thousands of children... The mother in me is loving this as well.” v

Back at the Ranch Beset by sprawl and malls and the roar of the 101, Camarillo’s landmark Ranch House offers a glimpse of the early days on the Oxnard Plain. By Mark Storer

Photography by Stephen Schafer
hirley Randall speaks with relish, considering her words carefully for the most part when discussing her favorite subject. Randall, a retired dietitian, is a docent at the Camarillo Ranch House, and Don Adolfo Camarillo, his contributions, his family, and, most importantly, his house, are subjects about which she is passionate. Ventura County owes much to the little man from the big ranch. From developing a unique breed of white horses to donating land for the public good and bringing the railroad to his little town, the Don left an indelible mark on the county. The center of his empire, the Queen Anne Victorian house he built for his wife, Isabel, and their five children, is now a historical landmark that plays host to weddings, parties, celebrations, and events of all kinds. “It was here that he ran everything he did,” said Randall. She’s standing in Don Adolfo’s office on the main floor, where he spent time with what she calls “his cronies.” He didn’t allow women in his office, she explains. The only exception was his granddaughter Carmelita Nicholson, who was permitted entry just once—to be reprimanded for her mis-

takes with his beloved white horses. “He’d sit in here with Fitzgeralds, Petits, Donlons, McGraths, Laubachers,” she said, listing a who’s who of Ventura County founding families. “He was on the committee to build Santa Clara Church in Oxnard, and these people were all his friends, his colleagues.” She smiles as she talks about his generosity and many charitable works. He donated so much land, it’s impossible to find any place on the Oxnard Plain that isn’t in view of property owned by Don Adolfo and his brother Juan. “He was so influential, but he wasn’t a politician,” she said. “At least not professionally.” Of course, Don Adolfo was a politician. But to be in the Camarillo Ranch House is not just to see the life of an influential founding resident of the county. The Don was first and foremost a devout Catholic and a family man; the house and its exhibits are mostly dedicated to the vibrant tableaux of life, love, children, and friends that took place within its walls. He, Isabel, and the children, Rosa, Ave Maria, Isabel, Francisco, and Carmen, lived in the house from 1892 until 1958. The house was renovated after the last residents, Bert and Linda Lamb, descendents

of the Camarillos, left in 1997. Originally, the land on which the house sits was a Mexican land grant, Rancho Calleguas. Now, the house fronts Highway 101 and Mission Oaks Boulevard at Camarillo Ranch Drive. The city of Camarillo bought the house and set to work making it into a landmark—a repository of the family’s and the city’s history. Designed and built by Amleth and Ward of Ventura, the 6,000-square-foot house with 16 rooms on two floors was painted almost entirely white, as was fashionable at the time. During the renovation, it took more than 1,700 volunteer hours to scrape the paint off the hardware alone, not to mention the now naturally stained redwood. “We couldn’t save too much because it was so well used,” Randall said. “Hollywood used the house in the 1970s and really abused the place.” The Camarillos raised enough cattle and grew enough crops to feed the entire staff in addition the family. The house was the center of a 21-building miniature town. But this wasn’t a house with servants and butlers. The Camarillos were a ranch family, and Don Adolfo believed in hard work. On occasion he hired whole families as ranch hands and farm help. “He was a Mexican Don building a Queen Anne Victorian home,” said Randall. “He did it for Isabel, of course. She wanted it this way. But he loved the people who worked here, like Melaton Ortiz, who he hired when Melaton was 15 to be his driver.” Ortiz died in Camarillo just last year, at the age of 90. The wraparound porch no longer wraps around, but its grandeur exists in the front and partially on the side of the home. Climbing up the stairs at sunset, one can picture a simpler time, when the family sat

outside listening to the ranch animals and watching the white horses. The main floor entrance and receiving parlor featured a guestbook that is still under glass. Visitors can see the names of the many guests—including George Cryer, the mayor of Los Angeles in 1924, and Friend Richardson, the governor of California in the same year— who came for Don Adolfo’s and Doña Isabel’s legendary barbecues. The Queen Anne Victorian style appears in things like the turret, a circular section on the southeast side of the main entry area fretted with intricate woodwork and stained glass windows. Pocket doors separated rooms, allowing privacy when desired. Twelve-foot-high ceilings and rounded entryways lend a sense of grandeur as well as personality and character. Six bedrooms and two powder rooms upstairs have been renovated to look as they did when the family lived here, including period furniture and dolls in the girls’ rooms. The kitchen, however, and the adjacent dining areas, are craftsman in style and were built for function, not form. (Don Adolfo liked modern appliances and was one of the first in the county to have a working icebox.) Don Adolfo and Doña Isabel wouldn’t recognize the interior today. Through several grants and many donations by various groups and individuals from all over Ventura County, the house was retrofitted: upgraded with electricity and plumbing, a new foundation, and other necessities. But the rooms still feel lived in—and the docents have lovingly cared for them as though they were. Don’t talk to Randall about ghosts, though. “We don’t talk about that,” she said. “That’s not an issue here; this was a happy house, full of life and love and family. And it still is.” v

wave This is a new solitaire that we designed recently. The inspiration was a set of waves I saw some years ago near the Rincon, but I’ve abstracted them to look more like the classical wave patterns we humans have used for thousands of years. As I write this, the casting is in the workshop being polished. The ring is based on a classical repeating wave pattern. I have it available to fit diamonds from one half carat up to three carats. I will be stocking it in 19K white gold, but it will be available in 14K & 18K yellow and Platinum as well. Depending on diamond size and metal, it is available starting at $900. If I don’t have the ring for you in stock, I’ll create it. You can afford a Lynn’s quality ring.
