SEA SAW IT WAS A HUMID MORNING ON THE COAST OF West Java, the kind of weather that makes an eggshell feel slightly buttery to the touch. Outside my losmen, a low-budget hostel held together by hammocks and mosquito netting, villagers were peddling backyard veggies and sacks of rice, chicken parts and coconut milk. And eggs. Smudged, Ping-Pong ball round eggs that bore little resemblance to the disinfected ovals of American supermarkets. Inside, in a claustrophobic kitchen ripe with the smell of it all, a Javanese woman dished up breakfast for her three guests, all foreigners. “Something funny ‘bout these eggs,” an Australian traveler named Peter said softly. “Funny how?” “Look like eggs, cook like eggs, but they taste—I don’t know, kinda musky,” said Peter, digging in for another bite. “Something funny,” he repeated, and grinned wickedly. He motioned to a poster on the wall. It was green in color, with images of baby turtles poking their heads adorably into the world for the first time, and billed the area as an up-and-coming hotspot for ecotourism, a haven for endangered sea turtles. Our hostess poked her own head out of the cracked shell of her kitchen. Her face broke into a delighted smile. “You tell your friends,” she said. “They stay here, see sea turtles.” This was my first trip to Indonesia, and the last time I ate the eggs of an endangered animal. The reason I bring it up is that my experience illustrates a key dilemma facing conservationists like Sarah Otterstrom (cover and page 43), who founded a Ventura-based nonprofit called Paso Pacifico. Her organization focuses on a 700-kilometer strip of
Nicaragua, but the storyline repeats around the world: good people doing what comes naturally, utilizing indigenous resources, unintentionally threatening the existence of a species. On the Pacific Slope of Central America, thousands of pregnant sea turtles swarm a beach en masse, laying some 30,000 eggs in just a couple days. Chaos ensues. Armed soldiers prowl the sand, some of them protecting eggs from hungry villagers, others snatching them up to trade as a sort of protein-rich currency. Then there’s the hot-button issue of deforestation. But this page is too short for details—stats on trees cut, watersheds reforested with natives—or another anecdote. Put simply, Paso Pacifico’s goal is to strike a balance between human and environmental needs. And as a human, I appreciate the nod to humanity. I’m an animal lover, an outdoorsy type. I lean green. But when push comes to shove, I’m on the team seven billion strong. Two of our team members, turtle-cute, a boy and a girl, strip my bank account and keep me up at night and test my fatherly impatience every day. So I bow to the fortitude of Lisa and Rick Pugh (p. 12), who’ve taken in some 40 foster children over the years. Truth is, I can’t imagine a worthier cause. The immediacy of need. The sad helplessness of a child alone. In a pinch, perhaps, most people would open their doors. I like to think we would, at least. But Lisa and Rick, having raised four children of their own, step up year after year, purely out of compassion. Theirs is the work of heroes. SOMETIMES, LIFE LEADS YOU DOWN AN unexpected path for the good of the less fortunate. For Lisa and Rick Pugh, their unexpected path was illuminated in their mid-30s, after their four children had reached driving age. The couple, through Ventura County Foster Parent Association (VCFPA), began taking in foster kids some six years ago, and quickly realized the local foster parenting community was in need of assistance. “These two are angels,” Jeannie Merrifield, a regular volunteer at Rachael’s Closet on East Main Street in Ventura, tells us as we walk through rooms and racks full of children’s clothing. And after sitting down with Lisa and Rich for a chat, it immediately became clear that they truly are doing divine work.

How did you get involved with VCFPA? Lisa Pugh: The kids. Rich Pugh: It goes beyond that. Lisa led us down the path of becoming a foster parent first. We had four kids of our own, and they were getting older. Both of [Lisa’s] grandmothers took in foster kids. And Lisa’s sister said she was going to become a foster parent, so Lisa decided to do the classes with her so she could help her sister. That was the original discussion. But a month after that, lo and behold, we have a foster baby at our house! And what we quickly realized was, you cannot be a foster parent without support. There are tons of programs out there to support the parents of the kids that come in, but there is very little out there for the foster parents when they are handed the child. How long have you been involved? RP: When you are going through licensing to become a foster parent, you’re usually introduced to VCFPA then. I think it’s been six years. The FPA has three core areas: the association itself, which is the recognized advocacy group for foster care in the county; the mentoring, teaching, and training; and we have Rachael’s Closet, an additional program where we help foster parents get items they need to care for the children. It’s hard enough to raise your own kids. What drew you to foster parenting? LP: We like to be around kids. Once kids turn 15, they generally stop talking to their parents; there are no more little parties and birthdays. We just missed that. RP: Our youngest kid was 16 and we were still in our 30s. We’re 43 now, still young. We had our four kids young and, truthfully, we were still learning who we were and trying to be a parent simultaneously. I guess we’re not done yet. How did your biological kids react to the foster kids? LP: They’ve all been great with it. And they’ve been pretty helpful, for teenagers. RP: We’ve always been fair with our own. They have really responded well, been supportive, never questioned it, and they’ve never felt second or anything like that. When we started doing this, we promised each other we weren’t going to be looking to our kids to be babysitters or care providers. We also were very up front, telling them, “Whomever comes into our home, they all get treated equally.” How did you go from one foster child to nearly 40? LP: We had kids before we became foster parents, from friends who were having a hard time. We took their kids in. RP: When you become a foster parent, you get licensed. Part of that licensing and training is they come out and evaluate the living arrangements in your home to see where kids could stay. So you get 13

licensed for different ranges. We’re licensed for up to three. LP: Sometimes, you get one kid and then they call and say, “Hey, we found a sibling.” We usually have two babies at once, all the time. RP: We care for a lot of babies. We have two cribs in our room, plus another bedroom that can be set up independently with its own crib and bed… LP: …for teen moms. Can you keep in touch with the kids you foster? LP: Sometimes the families are really receptive. We had one girl for five months and 23 days. We thought, if this kid doesn’t go with anybody, we’re going to adopt her. Well, the girl went with her aunt and she adopted her. The girl is going on four years old now, and we get text updates every week. We’ve watched her grow up; she comes and visits. Some people who want to get their kids back are nice, they’ve just had a hard time. If they’re fine with you and you’re fine with them, you can keep a relationship. What are best/worst case scenarios? RP: Best case scenario is the one Lisa just told you about: you have a child for a short time, you help the family out. You’re not only helping the child, you’re working with the family, through whatever issues they’re having. When the child leaves, you get to maintain that relationship. Like an aunt and uncle, close friends, or grandma and grandpa. Then there’s the opposite end, where you’re not pleased that the child is going back, you just don’t feel comfortable with things. Or the court made a decision you may not agree with—the child leaves and you never see the child again. That’s the way it goes. What was the impetus to create Rachael’s Closet? LP: Spending $500 on a foster kid we only had for two weeks. You’re so excited about a new child, you want them to have everything. But then you may only have them for a very short time, and you only get a $100 stipend. RP: It comes down to economics. We’re expected to provide all general life necessities: food, shelter, clothing, daycare, doctor visits, transportation. A lot of times that stipend doesn’t make it work. So put yourself in the kids’ shoes. You’re eight years old, it’s 5:00 p.m. and there’s a knock on the door. There’s a social worker, sometimes a police officer, telling you, “You need to come with us.” You’re not given an opportunity to pack, and you probably didn’t have anything to bring with you anyway. LP: The biggest thing for us is that we never want these kids to feel second-class. We don’t want a foster parent to take in a child and not be able to get them a new pair of jeans, or be forced to give them used stuff from the kids before them. RP: So Lisa started buying and trying to pull together, even just for our house, a couple days’ worth of each
thing for each gender and each age. We’re licensed for [ages] 0-18, so we don’t know who’s coming. We could get a call tonight saying, “We have twin girls for you.” What are we going to do, go buy all new girl baby clothes? Or do we have to dress them in boy outfits, or anything that fits? And then when they come, you don’t know how long they’re going to be there. That’s how Rachael’s Closet came about. Lisa and some other foster parents pulled it together. The goal is to take some pressure off. And the foster care parent community and FPA put a lot of time and energy into this. I would say probably 75 percent of the funds FPA brings in goes into Rachael’s Closet. When did this program begin, and what’s the story behind its name? LP: About five years ago, a girl named Rachael Maurer was doing a project to help foster kids. She came along and asked, “What do you need?” We really needed money to get things taken care of here after a robbery. She raised about $6,000. A girl in high school. I couldn’t get anybody to help us, but this teenage girl raised $6,000 and a bunch of clothes. How odd is that? We had been trying Walmart and all these places, and nobody would help us. But this teenager really did. She’s in college now and very busy, but still finds time to help us. Her mom, Jenine Maurer, does too. RP: You cannot just go anywhere and get donations; most national chain stores do not donate. Rachael’s Closet relies on community donations and individuals. We have some really good people who have supported us for a long time, and they’ve really kept us going. It’s also about trying to grow, and that means going out and getting more. How has response been from the community? LP: Not as good as we’d hoped. We’ve had a hard time getting places to donate, because everybody thinks foster parents are paid. We’ve had a hard time getting people to donate new items. A lot of people who have kids will donate used items, and that’s been great. Anything else, it’s really hard. People don’t understand the specifics of foster care, so it’s been hard to collect money. What are the best items people can donate to Rachael’s Closet? LP: We always get asked for new car seats. The other thing would be cribs. We take used high chairs and used baby things, too, and just wash them up. Strollers are another thing we never have enough of. And shoes—new shoes. Half the kids don’t come in to care with shoes. We cannot keep enough new shoes here. I think we’ve had maybe two foster children out of all them show up at our home with shoes. RP: New is the biggest thing. New is wonderful. Donations, too. New items allow us a bit more freedom to distribute, and we don’t have to wash it first. Money is good, as well. There are a lot of things that
we need to go buy. We might be in Target see they have a bin of socks on clearance for 50 cents a pack. We will buy 500 pairs because we have that opportunity. It’s not like the money is being handed out. LP: One of the hardest parts is clothing for teens. The teens come in, they don’t like the clothes, and they want to pick out their own. And I don’t blame them. So we try to keep gift cards on hand, even if it’s $10, just to give them something. If you come in and you’re in your pajamas, and you’re 15 or 16, you don’t want to wear someone else’s jeans. A two-year-old doesn’t care, but the teens are pickier. Tell us about the Rachael’s Closet “Care Bags.” RP: Mostly, the kids come in to a new foster home with nothing. LP: With the Care Bags, we try to put whatever necessities a kid needs for at least two to three days. The parents can come in, grab a bag, and also take whatever items they want here. I like to put shampoos in there, cutesy little kid stuff, normal things you would buy your own child. Two outfits, a pair or two of pajamas, underwear if they need it, socks, a few diapers if they need them. You never know what the foster parent might need.

Anything else you’d like to share about Rachael’s Closet? RP: Rachael’s Closet is a really important resource. Foster care is one of the least exposed communities because of all the confidentiality. I would love to be able to say, “Well, I had Johnny and here is Johnny’s story.” If I could do that, I’m sure we’d have a different level of understanding—and contributions. But it’s hard, because what we’re saying is, “Trust us, this is what we need. And I need you to understand what I do, but I cannot tell you why I’m doing it.” It’s a struggle for a lot of people when they want to get involved. So, the more we can help people understand what we do, the better they will understand how they can help us. LP: I sleep and breathe Rachael’s Closet. I’m constantly washing clothes. There is not one part of my day that does not involve something for Rachael’s or FPA. Obviously, foster parenting is all about helping the children, but Rachael’s Closet is here to support the parents who have the kids in their home. I don’t know any wealthy people doing foster parenting, just hardworking people who have a love for helping these kids. We are here to support the foster parents, to keep them happy and keep them going, so they can tell other people, “Hey, you can foster. It’s not as hard as you think. They speak without words, and provide a larger-than-life-sized mirror of human emotions. Writer Nancy D. Lackey Shaffer visits a trio of local ranches to explore the healing powers of horses. TOURISTS HAVE FLOCKED TO VENTURA COUNTY’S BEACHES FOR DECADES, but her hillsides have their own appeal, particularly for equestrians. Rancho St. Francis, hidden away in a gated community in Camarillo, is 14 acres of equine paradise: rolling hills, shady oak trees, and large open spaces create a fitting landscape for 50 horses. Riding trails, training arenas, and spacious paddocks add to their exceptional comfort and care. “The goal is to be a resort for them,” says ranch foreman Glenn Hogan. And he should know. As the son of Ken and Lynn Hogan, founders of Pleasant Holidays, he spent much of his professional career in the hospitality industry. Now that he’s taken up the reins as a philanthropist (Hogan also serves on the board of the charitable Hogan Family Foundation), he extends that high level of attentiveness to the horses under his care. And they need it. His ranch is a place of restoration and rehabilitation for injured, abused, neglected, and aging horses. Some are thoroughbreds abandoned after they’ve been hurt or passed their prime, some come from hoarding situations, and some have unknown but clearly distressing histories that have left them physically and mentally traumatized. But a combination of high-quality veterinary care, customized diets, appropriate exercise, and attendance by compassionate and experienced trainers, ranch hands, and volunteers has worked wonders on Rancho St. Francis residents. Many have gone on to be adopted by loving and responsible owners, while others have remained in the “family” as equine therapy horses. The Camarillo property was established in 2007 as an extension of the larger Hidden Valley-based Rancho St. Francis, which Ken Hogan founded in 2005 to teach low-income children horsemanship. “He believes that the compassion and care of animals will develop great character and kindness,” Glenn explains. Over time, their programs grew to include equine therapy, hippotherapy (a form of occupational therapy which uses the gait of the horse for neuromuskuloskeletal improvement), and adaptive riding for individuals with disabilities. Horses from the Camarillo site were originally trained for use in Hidden Valley, but eventually they started running their own therapy programs. The benefits of equine therapy for people with Down syndrome, autism, and developmental disabilities have been well documented, but Rancho St. Francis explores the effects of the horse on the mind as well. Women recovering from homelessness, mental illness, and domestic violence benefit from the safe space created at Rancho St. Francis, while the Homefront program was developed for military families. “Our goal now is with the veterans coming back, helping them deal with PTSD, and re-integrating the families,” Hogan says. “The horses become a common activity that they can connect around.” So what is it about horses that proves so thera-
peutic for many people? Hogan thinks it’s their ability to reflect what’s going on inside the humans interacting with them: “They feel and reflect our emotions. And because a horse is so large, it’s a bigger feedback or mirror on how you’re conducting yourself.” “They speak to us without saying a word—that’s what’s so special about them,” says Adri Howe, president of the board of California Coastal Horse Rescue. The nonprofit, founded in 2000, currently plays host to 17 horses (including two minis) on an oak scrubland in the Ojai Valley, providing a sanctuary for “rescue, rehabilitation, and refuge.” Some of the horses that arrive on the 9.25-acre ranch are, like those at Rancho St. Francis, retired or abandoned racehorses, or escaping abuse situations. “But the economy plays a large part as well,” Howe says, explaining that sometimes owners simply can’t afford to care for these large, beautiful but expensive animals. “A lot of people don’t realize the work involved or the lifespan. There’s such a need for homes for elderly horses.” CCHR is run by some 35 volunteers, who pitch in with mucking, tending the grounds, grooming, feeding, and other ranch work. The concierge-level of care includes the usual: vet and farrier visits, specialized nutrition (senior horses require their own diet), appropriate exercise, and pasture time. But they’ve also introduced Reiki sessions (administered by Lea Alexander of Animal Heart Strings), which Howe says have dramatically helped soothe and heal many of CCHR’s most highly stressed animals. “To see an animal that has had trust completely shattered start to reconnect—it’s just an incredible thing.” The goal for many horses, beyond healing, is to rehabilitate them for adoption and possibly even equine therapy, so socializing the horses is key. “We’re trying to increase their ability to interact,” Howe explains. To that end, CCHR offers the Pony Tales Reading Club, where children come to the ranch and read out loud to horses. But it’s the unrelenting patience and dedication of CCHR volunteers that truly helps these rescue horses overcome their less-than-perfect pasts. Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship deals in nearly every form of equine therapy and is a big employer of rehabilitated horses. With such a diverse menu of services, different types and sizes of horses are always needed. Prospects are evaluated for temperament and soundness, and spend around 30 days being trained in various elements of the program at the 13-acre site in Newbury Park (there’s a smaller site in Chatsworth as well). According to Sara Jones, the group’s development director, one of the things that makes horses so well suited to therapy situations is that “they’re NOVEMBER 2014

just so honest. If you’re doing something the horse doesn’t want to do, it will tell you very quickly and unequivocally.” People with ADD/ADHD, autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, multiple sclerosis, and even traumatic brain injuries can get valuable sensory input from riding. Equine psychotherapy is helpful in the treatment of addiction and also forms part of Ride On’s veterans program. As Jones says, “Horses help people bring out feelings and emotions they normally wouldn’t express.” As these organizations show, the human-horse relationship is deep and nuanced, and there are many benefits (for both species) to exploring them. In Ventura County, we’re lucky to have the kind of spaces that allow that depth of camaraderie to flourish. v

UNNING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA can be an act of sheer will. Welcoming landscapes are rare, unless you’re at the beach—and that landscape offers challenges of its own, like bodies strewn over the sand, loose dogs, and parking hassles. Our local hills are largely stripped of vegetation; years of drought combined with this summer’s record heat waves have left parched trails that look more appealing to rattlesnakes than runners. Paved roads are tough on feet and limbs, not to mention full of cars. Indeed, there are a lot of good reasons not to take up running around here. Unless you’re a true runner, and Josh Spiker is just that. He’s also an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, and a guy who has made a living out of the drive to lace up a pair of decent shoes and take to the road. Equal parts serious athlete, reluctant businessman, and personal coach, Spiker, now 32, started running at age six with the Ventura Tigres youth track club. He earned a full-ride track scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, where running was a different experience, with leafy green trees and wintertime temperatures below freezing. In 2007, he bought Inside Track, a running shoe and sports equipment store in Ventura, but has since opened a new company called Vendurance. “We produce five races a year, and we work for another 30 or so during the year,” Spiker explained. “My job is directing and timing races.” The most popular is the Ventura Marathon and Beach Party, which Spiker describes as “a hard one, a lot of work.” Vendurance also puts together a summer run series called Boogie Nights, a 10-week Wednesday night 5K race series on the Ventura Promenade that raises money for Buena High School. “Each night there are between 100 and 140 people,” he said. “They usually generate about $7,000 over the 10 weeks.” There’s also the January/February Ventura Habitat Half-Marathon along the Ventura Bike Path, and the Ventura Turkey Trot, a popular Thanksgiving 5K, which Spiker said helps people bring families together to burn off a few calories. “It’s a flat path, a quick course. People really love it,” he says of Vendurance’s most popular race. “Initially, when we started putting on runs, we would donate money to local school cross-country teams and they would volunteer at the races,” Spiker said. “It was a great way to help out the local schools and give them a chance to do something useful in the community.”

But it was Camarillo resident and California Highway Patrol officer Tony Pedeferri, who was critically injured when a drunk driver hit him during a traffic stop on the 101 north of Ventura, who brought out the power of philanthropy in Spiker. “It was the Ventura Habitat Half-Marathon, and a lot of his CHP friends from all around the state came to support Tony,” he recalled. Pedeferri, whose injuries put him in a wheelchair, was told that his survival was due largely to physical fitness. Spiker said he felt a “need” to donate proceeds from the race to Pedeferri, who began a foundation to help organize physical fitness events and promote healthy lifestyles. “That race had about 200 more people than normal, and it was the first time we really donated a decent amount of money to a cause,” he said. “I’ve always felt that when we’re working in the community, we should give back to that community,” Spiker explained. It became an imperative, much like the imperative of running for Spiker. From straight donations, like giving a portion of the proceeds from the Turkey Trot to Habitat for Humanity, to dividing up proceeds based on volunteer numbers, Vendurance has made a significant impact on a number of Ventura County organizations, including Pedeferri’s Freedom on the Wings of Sport, the Humane Society, Ventura YMCA, and the Boys and Girls Clubs. He’s working with the two latter groups to create a program to get kids moving again. “They don’t have to join a league or a team, but we want to get kids to make movement and running a part of their lives,” he said. “I want to get them outside and moving instead of inside in front of a video game.” Spiker has created additional revenue streams and angles for fundraising as well. “For the Ventura Marathon this year, we tried something different,” he said. “We gave incentives for fundraising. If someone raised $150, they got a running hat. If they raised $300, they got a free hat and shirt. For $500 they got those things plus we rebated their entry fee.” This year, the marathon raised $9,500 for charity. Vendurance is growing steadily, and Spiker plans to hire a couple employees to help organize races. He’s thinking ahead. “I’m definitely open to the idea of creating larger events,” he said. “I really love Ventura, and I’d like to see us do some larger races. I think we could do that. How can a local nonprofit change the world? By pinpointing one of its most sensitive biological corridors—and taking a holistic approach to restoring and conserving that natural ecosystem. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK
DELVING INTO PASO PACIFICO’S WEBSITE, it’s easy to get lost in the Internet jungle and ask, “What does this Ventura- and Nicaragua-based environmental nonprofit not do?” Founder Sarah Otterstrom laughed when I mentioned this, explaining, “We concentrate on one small, 700-kilometer biological corridor in Nicaragua, but we do everything that pertains to our mission—and then some.” Their mission? To restore and conserve the natural ecosystems of Central America’s Pacific slope, home to some of the world’s highest levels of biodiversity. Which means not only studying what is going on, but also informing and educating the locals on the ground, including farmers, large landowners, and potential develop-
ers, as well as schoolchildren, teachers, and government officials. “It’s a systems approach,” she continued, “working across the entire landscape and natural ecosystem to address the conservation needs.” Efforts have included putting satellite transmitters on turtles and radio telemetry devices on baby parrots to monitor where they go in their first year. “If we know their habits and where they go for food, we can reach out to the farmers or larger landowners so they don’t cut down those forests,” Sarah noted. They’ve also planted more than a half million trees, restoring 1,000 acres with native species. That 2007 project, funded through carbon credits, was a hallmark: the first in Latin America to receive NOVEMBER 2014

gold standard validation under the Climate Community Biodiversity standard. “We continue to reforest watersheds with around 30,000 native trees per year, in partnership with small-scale landholders,” she said. An ecologist and conservation scientist, Sarah Otterstrom, PhD, grew up in Spokane, Washington, one of nine children. Although she and her husband, Dr. Rick Rutherford, attended high school together, they lost touch for a decade or so after graduation. While living and doing doctoral research work in the tropical forests of Nicaragua, Sarah communicated with Rick as he was practicing medicine in an indigenous community in Guatemala. The duo discovered their shared love of Central America—and one another—and moved to Ventura County in 2002 so Dr. Rutherford could train at VCMC’s Family Medicine Residency Program. Sarah launched Paso Pacifico in 2005, and in 2007 the growing family (including four children between the ages of one and eight) moved to Ojai, where they currently live. Otterstrom and her local team work out of a Ventura office, and she makes three to four trips a year to Nicaragua. The organization employs 40 people on the ground there, managed by country director Liza Gonzalez. I asked if they have any volunteers. “Not normally,” she said. “But we organize an international coastal cleanup for Nicaragua and get a lot of volunteers to help clean up beaches and lakes.” “How many is a lot?” “Five thousand,” she replied nonchalantly. Community involvement also includes education. Paso Pacifico teaches schoolchildren about the environment, and has established a Junior Ranger program outside of school hours that is coordinated with the Nicaraguan Education Ministry. “We are creating libraries in all the schools, and doing teacher training. Even uniforming some of the most impoverished school children and trying to help improve the infrastructure,” Sarah noted, explaining that public school teachers are sent to weeklong workshops in northern Nicaragua. And the educational programs are having an impact. Twenty-six-year-old Marvin, formerly a rural high school student, earned a scholarship to study forestry at a technical program in Oregon. He is now a full-time employee of the nonprofit, and working toward a college degree. “I really enjoy working with Paso Pacifico,” he wrote in an email. “It’s not everywhere you find a job that you like and that allows you to develop your knowledge. I have many opportunities to learn different things related to conservation. An important one is how to become a leader in my community.” Sarah’s area of expertise is in tropical fire ecology with a focus on rural subsistence farmers and how they use fire for hunting and agriculture. As an anthropologist, she lived in various rural communities. One site was a major sea turtle nesting beach, where she encountered the social dynamics around turtle eggs—a precious commod-

ity for poor, and frequently hungry, local people. The sea turtles arrived in mass, some 5,000 of them laying 30,000 eggs over a one- to three-day period. Then the frenzy began. “It’s an amazing natural event. I was there before a lot of tourist development, and it was very messy,” Sarah recalled. “Rangers and the army protecting the beaches, but also participating in the trade of turtle eggs, sometimes even bartering them for sex.” She was writing her PhD thesis at the time, while “the army was shooting at people at night, and New York investors were flying down and buying land. Villagers were coming and taking eggs like crazy since the level of poverty at the time was so bad.” She was also trying to figure out the next step in her life, and pondered how a community might balance environmental and human needs. While baby sea turtles hatched, so did the idea for Paso Pacifico. “The villages depend on natural resources, but need the right tools to manage them effectively,” Sarah explained. “It’s not a simple situation.” She went on to describe how a New York investor recently bought up “70 percent of the forest and coastline to build a golf course and resort.” The land has yet to be developed, though, and the new owners are now protecting it. The complexity of real-world problems keeps adding to the organization’s list of things to do. “There are a lot of needs,” Sarah said. “Other organizations are often so large they can’t embed in a community very easily. I wanted to create a grassroots organization that worked closely with communities, as well as the private sector.” She admits to a certain level of naivety, not fully understanding how hard it would be. But “nine years later, we’re still here.” Encouraging feel-good moments keeps Sarah going. Case in point: A new project to create a cooperative of women restoring an oyster bed and launching a native oyster business. “I just got a note from the cooperative,” Sarah recalled. “It said, ‘We know this is possible! We believe in doing this because Paso Pacifico has been here so long, and we trust them.’” Smaller organizations are often more locally committed, as larger ones tend to jump in and out. “Even though our impact is small, we have been very present in the communities,” she noted. Thirty of the organization’s 40 employees are from local communities, and Sarah says Paso Pacifico is committed to the long haul. With an operating budget around $650,000, the nonprofit has received funding from USAid grants in the past, but now gets grants from the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife, as well as private donations and funding from foundations. The biggest challenge at the moment is the looming threat of an inter-American canal through the isthmus and Paso Pacifico’s designated biological corridor. “We have concerns about the biological impact, but we can’t fight it,” Sarah said of the government-proposed, Chinese-funded (50 kilometers on each side of the canal

would belong to the Chinese firm) project. “If we do, we risk being kicked out of the country.” Poverty is also an issue. Nicaragua places second only to Haiti on the list of poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere, and rural people depend largely on fishing, agriculture, and other means that can deplete the environment. So, what’s next? The organization is in the process of hiring a managing director, so Sarah can focus on fundraising to acquire land and build what she calls “the core area.” In terms of importance, she says, there is one overriding concern: “We haven’t set aside land for conservation. … We’ve done great at recovering and protecting forests, but if we don’t set aside land to create a legacy, much like our national parks, the long-term impact of our efforts is uncertain.” v
