EDITOR’S NOTE
THE DOOR TO ABUNDANCE “YOU GET A LOT OF WISDOM INTHE PRESSURE COOKER.” This from a young father named Ryan Green, whose child was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of one. It’s the ultimate parental nightmare, a possibility against which I’ve built an impenetrable force field: I don’t even think about it; my kids will outlive me, and that’s that. Yet Green, a video-game developer, channeled the unthinkable horror of that prognosis into a game. Unlike most video games, “That Dragon, Cancer” was designed not as an escape but as a way to invite others into his real-life experience. And in the end, it became a way to preserve, and to celebrate, the memory of his son’s life. According to the American Association for Cancer Research, more than 1.65 million people in the U.S. will receive a cancer diagnosis in 2015. It’s a group of diseases that’s touched nearly everyone I know. One that recently imposed itself on my own extended family, and that will thoroughly dominate our lives in the coming months. To be sure, cancer is not rare. What is rare, however, is a constructive approach to dealing with it. Ventura’s Michelle Grinsel (p. 48) decided to document her struggle in a locally made film called One Way: A Journey To This Moment, which focuses on making the most of life—savoring its beauty and abundance, appreciating everyday miracles like a child’s laughter or the caress of an ocean breeze. While she’d joyfully return to the “carefree existence” of her life before cancer, Michelle very astutely points out that she would not do so without her “newfound sensibility.” In essence, Stage 4 breast cancer has imparted an almost unattainable wisdom, an enlightened awareness of the present moment.

NOVEMBER 2015
But between those ocean breezes and youthful peals of laughter await countless struggles. Fact is, cancer is a game changer. It is a heavy weight, a disruption, a 24/7 nuisance. And to go through it alone is anything but easy. Ojai’s Susan Kapadia was diagnosed in 2009 and struggled for two years before discovering the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Santa Barbara. Suddenly, she had access to a vast resource library, as well as support groups and other services. But as she put it, “When you are feeling sick and tired, the last thing you want to do is drive 35 miles.” So, instead of burying her head in the sand, Susan founded the Ojai Valley’s only community-based cancer-support nonprofit: OjaiCARES. On page 19, we chat with her and Assistant Director Renee Mandala about the organization, and find out what sort of impact it’s had on the local community. But this wasn’t intended to be a cancer-themed note. In fact, I was more intent on writing about the Gold Coast Veterans Foundation (p. 19), a Camarillo-based nonprofit that offers programs and services for local veterans and their families. Then the phone rang. A tectonic shift jolted my family—the shock of mortality. Priorities changed. Travel plans were cancelled. And the words of Michelle Grinsel rang truer than they had just a day before. Indeed, there is priceless wisdom in her realization that the door to abundance is always open. You don’t have to be diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or hollowed out by grief to gain entry, she reminds us. There is no key. With a sense of gratitude, you can walk right through. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

GIVING BACK
FOR THE LOVE OF ART At home with Jordan and Sandra Laby, Ventura’s passionate benefactors of high culture. BY MARK STORER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL
J
ordan and Sandra Laby had a vision for art in Ventura. The couple moved here in 1979 because they fell in love with the beauty of the place, and eventually built a home in the Keys that itself is a veritable showcase of local art. There are elaborate paintings filled with abstract and concrete images of Ventura, as well as sculptures of various kinds, not to mention picturesque Ventura Harbor and jetty views. Their own experience living in Los Angeles, where they had the opportunity to attend shows, plays, and exhibits, developed into more than a pastime—it was a lifestyle. “We’ve always had a passion for the arts,” said Jordan. “We love music and painting, acting and theater, all of it. And when we got here, we knew there were a lot of artists, but there wasn’t a lot of opportunity to see their work.” The Labys’ relationship includes vigorous and healthy discussions about art. They interpret it, share it—even argue }}

about it. When Jordan talks about the Rubicon Theatre he lights up. “We don’t know what we’d do without the Rubicon,” he said. “We go to see every show, and usually see it twice: once at the beginning and once at the end. Often the show changes over the run and you see so much.” He should know. The Rubicon has been one of the main focuses of the couple’s philanthropy. “We’ve had major experiences with these people, these artists, in our lives, and I can’t think of anything better. It enriches us so much, it adds so much to our lives,” Sandra said. The Labys moved to Ventura from Los Angeles, where Jordan worked as an inventor and entrepreneur and Sandra was a teacher and dancer. At 78, she still dances, even learning to do Argentine Tango and mastering the moves. Jordan invented an automatic pool cleaner that became the Polaris pool sweep, among other things including medical equipment. The couple invested in a number of buildings and industrial properties, and that work allowed them to start thinking about taking a leading role in the Ventura art scene. “They didn’t have anything here,” said Sandra. “Back then, there was just nothing. But they did start the Ventura Music Festival 21 years ago,” she said. “The city was wonderful.” It was around that time that the Labys were asked to help put up the money for a production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Ventura Theater. “We never did any of this alone; it was always in collaboration. They wanted to do a stage production, but they got the original actors,” said Sandra. “Ted Neely came out, and Carl Anderson, and that was such a wonderful production. It started it all.” It may well have. That production was a nexus that built around the Ventura Music Festival and branched out into the Labys becoming involved in planting the Rubicon Theatre, the New West Symphony—a combination of the Ventura Orchestra and the Conejo Valley Orchestra, Camerata Pacifica in Santa Barbra, and others—and supporting a number of local artists. They even had a part in bringing the WAV (Working Artists Ventura), a downtown residence for artists, to fruition. “We had our fingers in a little bit of all of it. We got in on all of it because we wanted the arts here,” said Sandra. “You have to remember that when we got here, it was ag and oil. There wasn’t a lot of art.” Their fingers in all those areas led to the creation of the San Buenaventura Arts Foundation, a group whose mission was to support local art and provide a venue for it in Downtown Ventura. “We had committees set up, and surveys had been done. The land was going to be the parking lot off of Main Street by the Ventura Mission,” said Jordan. 12

There were to be two theaters, a 600-seat and a 200-seat venue. The Labys worked on the plan and raised money for it for more than 10 years. “But around 2007 and 2008, that’s when China started buying up concrete and steel and the prices tripled for those things,” Jordan said. “It just became clear that this wasn’t going to happen.” But the couple doesn’t refer to the event as a failure. “The foundation still exists, and we did succeed in bringing the arts together and uniting all the various parties,” Jordan said. “We had a lot of help, a lot of very fine people have worked with us and brought artists and performers and all of it together to work toward having more art in Ventura and support each other. The city helped with that, and it was a really good thing.” The San Buenaventura Arts Foundation is now the vehicle through which the Labys and a number of others donate to arts and artists around Ventura and Ojai, and is the backbone of a community that has transformed from a working-class beach town to a community where art is welcomed, celebrated, and patronized. One of the things the Labys are proudest of is their collaboration with a group that brought the Harmony Project to Ventura. Dr. Margaret Martin had imported the idea from South America to Los Angeles, where musicians work with schools in poor neighborhoods to teach underserved children to play classical music and instruments. “I asked Dr. Martin, ‘Could we do this in Ventura?’” said Sandra. “She’s such an optimist. She told us that we could, and we spent about three years putting it together.” The Labys started the program at Sheridan Way School in Ventura, using donations to teach music appreciation in the second and third grades and provide instruments for the children. The program now has 150 students involved across four schools in the Ventura Unified School District. The program has won awards that include one from the President of the United States. “It’s part of the New West Symphony now and they run it, which is just great,” said Sandra. “They hire teachers coming out of Cal State Northridge, there are nine of them now, and they teach part-time to get the kids learning to play in an orchestra.” Sandra fills with emotion when talking about it: “It’s changing these kids’ lives! It’s so wonderful.” “That’s the thing,” said Jordan. “It’s really not about us. It’s about these kids and giving them a chance to change their lives.” “That’s what life is about,” Sandra said. “When you come to the end, what do you have? You have the memory of these children, and you made a difference in their lives. And that’s such joy. That’s the real gift.” v

CONVERSATION
A song of healing brought Susan Kapadia (l.) and Renee Mandala (r.) together to support other cancer patients in the Ojai Valley.
WHO CARES?
OjaiCARES. Susan Kapadia and Renee Mandala on the creation of the Ojai Valley’s only non-profit community-based cancer support organization. INTERVIEW BY RYAN A. SMITH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARISA BREYER-SMITH Why did you start OjaiCARES? Susan Kapadia: I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. That realization, that shock and awe, needed to be addressed, and it was more than just my family could handle. My health treatment team was in Santa Barbara. Renee Mandala: Because there’s no cancer treatment in Ojai. SK: That’s right. I looked around Ojai and there was nothing here. It’s very lonely. No support groups, no treatment centers? SK: There was a single support group for breast cancer that met once a month, and it didn’t meet all my needs. I needed somebody every day, somebody I could call when I was in a panic in the middle of the night. So how did your struggle transform into OjaiCARES? SK: To be very honest, I struggled for two years. Very depressed. I owned a restaurant here in Ojai and was diagnosed five months
after I opened it. World Flavor Café on Signal Street. My oncologist recommended that I close the restaurant during my treatment period, because 16-hour days and cancer treatment were not working for me. I was getting very ill. I was devastated. So I sold the restaurant and spent a good portion of those two years in a pity party. One day, I went to my oncologist and told the nurse there, ‘Tammy, I’m having a very difficult time entering the world again. I really don’t know how to remake myself. I’m lost.’ She grabbed my hand and led me across the parking lot to the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Santa Barbara. As soon as I entered, they met me with hugs, and I knew I’d met my people. They gave me a home and gave me a job. A job? SK: I became a volunteer for a year and was quite good at my job. I honed my skills there, went back to school at UCLA, got my patient advocate certificate. I felt competent to open a center based on their model. }} NOVEMBER 2015

How did you two first get together? RM: I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in fall 2012. Mutual friends suggested that I meet Susan. Fun little story: I was about to head into a second surgery and asked friends to record uplifting messages for me to listen to. They collected all these recordings of people, and on there was Susan, who I had yet to meet, singing a prayerful song for me with her lovely, angelic voice. SK: It was a Hebrew song of healing, and I sang it to her because it’s one of my favorites. RM: I soon started to access her as sort of a one-woman startup of a cancer support center. I needed a lot of support. My family was out of town, and I had a lot of worries, a lot of questions. Then I started to recover, and in 2014 Susan asked if I wanted to come on part-time. I have a background in medical social work and ran a lot of support groups in my life, but I was fairly new to running cancer groups. What does OjaiCARES offer? RM: We have four different support groups each month. Two are general cancer support. One is called “Cancer as a Turning Point,” based on a book of the same title. People who attend are very interested in learning how cancer invites us to live more healthy, authentic, aligned lives, letting go of things that aren’t working in our lives, taking on things bringing us more joy. The other is a drop-in group where people can just chat with each other. Not a facilitated group, just chat time. Our groups are popular, but more so are our integrative therapy programs. There is oncology massage, Reiki, and reflexology. Some don’t want to come in and talk, but they sure want a massage. That’s a very popular program run fully by our dedicated volunteer core. SK: They have all been trained in oncology massage, every single one of them. RM: And we have guided imagery called “Turning Up the Comfort,” which is to help people deal with discomfort. Then we have “Finding Our Center,” which helps people get centered when there’s so much uncertainty. We’re adding a new program called “Releasing Through Relaxation,” which helps them find calm. We also have a relationship with an offsite yoga center, Sacred Space Studio with Ingrid, and she sees our clients for free. And we recently got a grant for an art program, to be launched in January. We are also looking toward a “Writing for Wellness” program. Certainly, our lending library is helpful too, the wig and scarf boutique. Primarily, though, we help with patient navigation. Newly diagnosed people have questions. SK: Sometimes there are insurance billing questions, things that Renee and I have dealt with a lot. When you see doctors for six months on a weekly basis, there are bound to be mistakes in your billing You mentioned everything is free. How do you manage that? RM: We keep our budget very low. Our community has seen the need, and they’ve helped with private and community donations. We are also getting better at writing grants, which is one of Susan’s focuses. Finally, it’s our volunteers; we are primarily volunteer-driven, and we’re blessed to have a very dedicated core.

What is unique about OjaiCARES? RM: There is no cancer treatment in Ojai. There are no other cancer support services here. We are not associated with the hospital. We don’t get funded by any hospital budget the way some large cancer organizations do outside of Ojai. SK: We are absolutely filling a gap. When you are feeling sick and tired, the last thing you want to do is drive 35 miles for support. So where does that leave you? Alone with your thoughts, instead of in a community. How has the response been from Ojai residents? RM: One female donor called and said, ‘I heard about your organization, and I want to make a large donation. Just knowing you are there helps me sleep better at night.’ How did the community affect your own cancer journeys? SK: I had to go through cancer in a very public way because of the restaurant. People often came to see how I was doing, and I found that very… It really filled my heart. And I know that’s a very Ojai thing. So they would come in with puppy dog eyes, like, ‘Oh, how are you doing today?’ It was not exactly what I needed, but of course you take in the love—this is what I needed. RM: I have no family on the West Coast, and I considered going back and living with my mom to do treatment. I had a little bit of savings, but certainly couldn’t pay my rent and be out of work. Interestingly, my car was totaled in the middle of the night on a dead end, sleepy street in Ojai, and that’s when things started to come together for me here. A friend asked me to live with her while I did my treatment. Some friends got together and found a cheap mechanic to get my car fixed. Someone else loaned me a car. Someone drove me to chemotherapy each week. Some ladies dropped off vegetables so I could do my juicing. Other people dropped off bones so I could do my bone broth. Susan showed up in the chemotherapy room with some wonderful soup for me. The Mardi Gras folks in Ojai chose to donate the proceeds from their event to me that year. So many things in Ojai came together. Other friends did an online fundraiser for me. Considering OjaiCARES, how do you see success? SK: I already feel successful. I took that leap of faith—that if you build it, they will come. I felt this place would be a success even if only one person came. I honestly believe that. I guess that makes it easy to come to work. SK: Very. People say to me, ‘How do you deal with this issue all day long?’ And I say, ‘It’s a joy to come to work.’ You have no idea the pleasure I get from seeing a person leave with this new sense of, ‘I can do this, I’m going to be able to do this.’ They have a road map when they leave. We are a well of compassion for the challenges they are facing. So I feel successful every single day. What are your goals for the coming year? SK: Exhale! (Laughs) The goal is that everybody in this valley knows we exist. RM: And that no one walks alone with cancer in Ojai. v
Among the many practical offerings at OjaiCARES, stylish head coverings and wigs, as well as a long list of additional referrals and resources. Drop into 960 East Ojai Ave., Suite 105.

Co-founders Ron and Lisa Greenwood at the GCVF Veterans Connection in Camarillo.
EARNING IT Serving those who served, the Gold Coast Veterans Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for local vets and their families. BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL MOORE AS FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN OF THE GOLD COAST VETERANS FOUNDATION (GCVF), a nonprofit founded in 2010 that supports vets and their families via myriad organizations and agencies in Ventura County, Ron Greenwood has walked the walk. A U.S. Army veteran, Ron, now 67, was severely wounded in Vietnam. “The irony is that when I got out of the service, nobody told me about federal, state, or any other veterans’ benefits,” he explained. “If you have 100 percent disability, as I do, you don’t have to pay for automobile registration. I didn’t find that out until I was 50 years old!” On January 31, 1969, Sergeant Ron Greenwood was near the Cambodian border in dense Vietnamese jungle with his platoon—one that usually numbered 44 but had been broken down into four units of 11 men; due to injuries and casualties, Ron’s squad included only five to eight men. }}

“My squad pulled an ambush one night but no enemy came through, so we moved into a deeper part of the jungle to hide out during the day, to rest before pulling another ambush the next night,” he recalled. “One of my men hit a trip wire that was attached to an American grenade. Within seconds it exploded.” There was no time for Ron to take cover. “I was blown to hell,” he said. “Every part of my body was injured, except for my head and left arm.” After many hours of surgery and months of recovery, Ron returned to civilian life to attend college and enter the workforce, with the help of the G.I. Bill and the Vocational Rehabilitation Program. Although Ron was wounded 46 years ago, he astutely notes, “It never goes away, but it is now far in the past.” He was awarded a Purple Heart that hangs amidst numerous commendations and civic awards in his Ventura industrial park office. Ron’s wife, Lisa, the co-founder of Gold Coast Veteran Foundation, has been by his side for most of his life and forms an integral part of the nonprofit. The couple recently celebrated 35 years of marriage, and was honored with a resolution from the Board of Supervisors of Ventura County for their efforts. They met at UC Berkeley during bar exams, and both went on to become successful lawyers in Northern California, where they worked on a number of veterans’ issues. In 1999, they sold their law firm and moved to Ventura to open Global Delivers Logistics, a successful distribution and warehouse company that serves as a liaison between manufacturers and telecommunications and electric utilities end users. AT&T—a “very pro veteran” company, notes Ron—is one of their largest customers. Part of the credit for the Foundation goes to former six-term District Attorney Mike Bradbury, who the Greenwoods met when they moved to Ventura. Mike approached the Greenwoods about starting the Foundation, and with his vast network garnered over years of community service was able to use his influence to get many leaders on board with the idea, including General Roger Brautigan, the former secretary of the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Brautigan asked Ron and Lisa to reach into the Superior Court system and work to get a Veterans Court established. With the help of Judge Colleen Toy White, District Attorney Greg Totten, former District Attorney Mike Bradbury, and Sheriff Geoff Dean, along with many others, the highly successful Ventura County Veterans Court was established. The court provides opportunities and services to make a difference and change the behavior of veterans who have gotten in trouble with the law. “The District Attorney has to approve a veteran for the court, and the veteran must plead guilty to the crime,” Ron explained. “There will be no trial. If the crime involves substance abuse, they have to be clean and sober to graduate. When the vet finishes the Veterans Court Program they will usually have a job, or be in school, and their court record will be expunged.” That veteran now becomes a productive member of society, so the court is not only a win for the veteran, but a win for the community. The success rate nationwide, as well as in Ventura, is an astounding 97 percent. Ron praises GCVF’s executive director, J.C. Oberst, along with a very active and generous board, for all the programs the nonprofit supports. He wants more people in Ventura County to join in.
There’s currently a campaign to get 1,000 people to commit $100 a year, and 100 more affluent veteran supporters to give $1,000 a year to reach the $200,000 annual fundraising goal. Over the last two years, the Ventura County Community Foundation’s Veterans Fund gave away $175,000 to vetted organizations that provide services for veterans. GCVF board members donated or raised almost 80 percent of all the funds. The goal of GCVF is to “advocate, provide hope and opportunity, identify and support the development of programs to fulfill unmet needs and partner with existing organizations to provide services” for veterans and their families. With an emphasis on housing, the organization works with the home division of Cal Vet, the California Department of Veterans Affairs, and the VA home on Telephone Road in Ventura. Other outreach efforts include college campus veteran centers, like the one at Cal State University Channel Islands, and Reins of H.O.P.E., which offers equine therapy for vets dealing with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). In 2013, the Foundation opened the GCVF Veterans Connection. This one-stop shop provides free space and support for nonprofit and/or volunteer veteran service providers in Ventura County, including over 85 community-based agencies that make up the Ventura County Military Collaborative. The GCVF Service Center is supported entirely by donations, and provides a unique community-based environment that coordinates public and private sector services for veterans. The GCVF also helps returning veterans integrate back into the community by providing employment assistance, counseling, education, and housing, and it continues to sponsor donor-funded improvements at Ventura County Government Center Memorial. Lisa Greenwood cites a quote from George Washington on the nonprofit’s website as their guiding mantra: “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, is directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated.” “That’s really the gist of it,” she said. “Ron says these veterans are all our sons and daughters. Their willingness to serve is amazing. These people come back and need an opportunity to reintegrate back into civilian life. None of them will be the same person they were before their service” Lisa praises the tremendous support to date. “Ventura County is an incredible community that’s come together and taken us seriously. The county is small enough that you can really be effective, but large enough to make a real difference. We have a very strong feeling that our vets deserve a break. They need our help, not a hand out.” Lisa noted that the GCVF intends to expand their outreach northward to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, to serve more veterans in need. As she put it, “If the government is willing to have them serve—not only those on the front lines, but all vets—they should go to the front of the line and have opportunities.” v

Family prospers with its line of mattresses at Santa Barbara facility
I
Family prospers with its line of mattresses at Ventura facility n an age of big-name brands, corporate consolidation and outsourced manufacturing, it’s hard to imagine that a small, family-owned company could survive in the business of making and selling mattresses. Yet somehow, quietly holding its own against the Sleep Numbers and Tempur-Pedics of the world, is Santa Barbara Mattress. Founded by local entrepreneur Spencer Simcik, the mattress factory and showroom operates out of an industrial park off Telephone Road in Ventura. From here, Simcik and about a half-dozen of his family members help with the manufacturing and sale of the firm’s own brand of mattresses, Churchill & Smith, and a wholesale pillow-making business. Simcik, an endlessly energetic man in his 50s, sells other brands of mattresses as well. However, his passion lies with the mattresses he and his family produce behind the showroom floor. Simcik prides himself on manufacturing mattresses with natural materials. Instead of petroleum-based products such as polyester and nylon, Simcik said he goes for wools and unbleached cotton. In place of polyurethane foam he favors natural latex and coconut fiber, and he avoids chemicals such as chlorine and formaldehyde. “I’m a disrupter in the industry, I like to disrupt every part of our industry and expose it because there’s a lot misrepresentation,” Simcik said. “It’s become sales driven, all about sales, sales, sales, but it should really be about quality sleep. My whole thing is, if we educate the consumer, the money’s going to come.” On a recent weekday, Simcik bustled between the showroom of neatly-made, plush-looking beds, and the small behind-the-scenes factory piled high with mattresses and boxes of materials. On one side of the factory, two seamstresses sewed together the fabric components of the mattresses, while Simcik’s son, Parker Simcik, and his niece, Courtney Wickman, consulted with
him on operational logistics. The company is truly a family affair, with Simcik’s wife, mother, three sisters and two nieces all playing a role. His sisters, Pam Simcik, Debbie Wickman and Vickie Whalen, operate their own affiliated mattress stores in the Conejo Valley, Camarillo and Simi Valley, respectively. His wife, Karen Simcik operates Santa Barbara Mattress at 909 De La Vina in downtown Santa Batrbara. Almost everyone, including Spencer Simcik, pitches in to help with what’s needed, be it sewing, selling or coming up with new mattress design ideas. “Everybody here has to know how to sew,” said Simcik. “This is not an assembly line. Everyone around here needs to do everything.” Simcik got his start in the mattress business in 1986, when he opened his first store in Oxnard at age 21. At that time, most mattresses were sold at department and furniture stores, but Simcik decided he could corner a niche area of the market by specializing only in mattresses. The business grew, and over the years he helped independent operators open 22 other mattress stores around the country. Although he’d long had an interest in making mattresses himself and began experimenting with it in the late 1980s, it was only in 2010 that Simcik began manufacturing in earnest, he said. He was inspired to create natural, superior-quality mattresses after a trip to Sweden as a dealer for mattress company Hästens, where he learned about the materials and science behind promoting healthy sleep, he explained. Today, Simcik said he makes between 800 and 1,000 mattresses a year, which are sold in his sales room, at his family’s affiliated mattress stores and a few other stores. For his wholesale pillow business he has sold over 14,000 pillows in the last two years, he said. In all, his business generates about $3 million in annual sales, he said. Working with family has been a source of strength and stability for the

THE JOY OF
NOW
How Michelle Grinsel’s battle with cancer unlocked the door of abundance BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOS: ONE WAY – JOURNEY FILM
M
ichelle Grinsel relandscaped her backyard this summer. Where once there was concrete and brick, she now has flagstone, succulents, a cozy patio, and a bench in the spot that gets the most shade—perfect for cooling off during happy hour. It’s not a project you’d expect from a cancer patient in the midst of treatment. But for Grinsel, it’s all about living in the now. The former setup just wasn’t working for her, and when you’re diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer, “You get really clear on what you like and don’t like,” Grinsel says. For her, having a chronic cancer diagnosis is now just a part of life—a life she intends to continue living with passion, power, and purpose.

Michelle’s love for nature and commitment to conservation led her to Ventura-based Patagonia, where she and her husband, Mark, have worked since 2005. Seen here, an outdoorsy crew of co-workers, friends, and family.
Raised in Traverse City, Michigan—known for cherries, vineyards, lush forests, and the beautiful beaches of Lake Michigan—Grinsel grew up with a love for the environment and a commitment to conservation. Her values led her to outdoor retailer and sustainability advocate Patagonia, where she and husband Mark both found employment in 2005. Moving to Ventura, they embraced all that the local area has to offer: an ocean to surf and kayak, trails to hike and bike, a forward-thinking community to embrace. Grinsel loved her job as director of merchandising, and her active, outdoorsy lifestyle full of love, family, and friends. Daughters River (now six) and Sea (four) made life even sweeter. By all accounts, Grinsel was living the dream. When she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in July 2013, it was a shock—not because she didn’t expect cancer to touch her life, but because she had a solid strategy to minimize her very real risk. Breast cancer runs in Grinsel’s family. Her grandmother and great-grandmother 48

died of the disease; her mother is a 16-year breast cancer survivor. Testing positive for the BRCA-1 gene mutation in 2004, Grinsel had fastidiously kept up with the recommended monitoring: regular self-exams plus mammograms and/or MRIs every six months. “I really felt armed with that knowledge,” Grinsel recalls. A double mastectomy and ovary removal are generally recommended, but due to her young age (she was in her 20s) there seemed to be no pressing need for that just yet. Many women with the BRCA gene have children first and then proceed with the prophylactic surgeries once their family is complete. This was Grinsel’s plan as well, holding off while she and Mark contemplated having a third child. Her game plan shifted radically when she found a lump in her lower armpit. Despite her youth, excellent health, and the most careful of monitoring, breast cancer had still caught up with her. “That was the hardest thing to make peace with,” Grinsel admits. What followed were months of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy,
radiation therapy, and the removal of ovaries and 16 lymph nodes. “I just decided to take this head on and do the most aggressive treatment available,” she says. “I had to be able to say that there was nothing more I could have done.” Recalling the days of treatment and healing, she notes, “I was alone with my thoughts … a lot. For hours and days. At first it was sad, but now I’m in touch with who I am. That’s a gift.” And while Grinsel admits that she mourns her “carefree existence,” the wisdom she gained through her ordeal is precious beyond measure. “I would not go back to my old existence without my newfound sensibility,” she attests. She has become so thankful for the miracle of every moment—her children’s laughter, an afternoon spent with friends, the feel of the ocean breeze. “The spectrum of extraordinary has narrowed.” Grinsel had stared cancer in the face— and lived to tell the tale, with a new perspective that allowed her to appreciate her life like never before. “I was healthy for a year. We dove

back into life, and savored every drop of it,” Grinsel remembers. She and Mark biked around Provence. They bought a camper, traveling up and down the coast with the kids. “It was a really joyous time.” Her renewed sense of purpose was sorely tested at the beginning of this summer, when doctors discovered that her breast cancer had spread to her left lung, and that it was at Stage 4. Like the first time, Grinsel chose to meet her diagnosis head on. But unlike the first time, she had what she describes as an “urgency” to do something more. “I don’t know how much time I have … and there’s a lot I have to say,” she explains. Despite weekly trips to UCLA for testing and a new treatment regime (thankfully, less debilitating than the first time around) she’s committed to seeing a very special project through: a documentary about her life with cancer, and what she has learned as a result. The film got underway immediately. The first call she made was to her friend and former
Patagonia co-worker Jessica Clayton, the cofounder of Wilder Public Relations. “I texted Jess, and by the end of the day she had a director and a cinematographer lined up,” Grinsel recalls. That would be Todd Hannigan, an Ojai-based filmmaker and musician, and cameraman Scott Soens. A crowd funding campaign raised over $36,000 this summer, and shooting was completed this fall. “The film has taken me on a thrilling ride,” Grinsel says. It’s called One Way, and it’s only partly about Grinsel’s cancer. “The message of the documentary is basically witnessing my journey of learning that gratitude has been key to unlocking the door of abundance,” she explains, adding that what’s really amazing is that you don’t have to experience a life-threatening illness to discover it. Fighting cancer put her in touch with the wonders all around her, but she recognizes that feeling such grace was always available to her, and to everyone. “That abundance has been there the whole time,” she explains. She hopes others,
regardless of their struggles, will be able to tap into that abundance too. Grinsel isn’t certain what her future holds. Odds or statistics don’t serve her, so she steadfastly refuses to consider them in the equation that equals a happy, fulfilling life. Love. Laughter. Family. Health. Gratitude. These are the elements that inspire and sustain her, and Grinsel intends to indulge them at every opportunity. She’s looking forward to resuming her work at Patagonia, and having One Way presented at the Santa Barbara Film Festival next spring. For all that cancer has taken, her life continues to be overflowing. “It’s a struggle, but if I can practice gratitude, I can get back on track,” Grinsel says. “I refuse to live in any other space.” v Watch the trailer and read Michelle Grinsel’s blog: ONEWAY-JOURNEY.COM

“I don’t copy what’s new... I create what’s next!” -- Bob Lynn
The other evening I looked to the Northern sky and saw the stars that make up Cassiopeia. So I recreated Cassiopeia's pattern of stars in Diamonds and set them on a softer path. Like the pendant above, they are designed with Diamonds as the stars and a swivel connection to the Lever-Back tops so they can move with you and sparkle everywhere. This is the second in a series of pieces based on astronomy that will be available in affordable price ranges because they are made both in Silver and in Gold with Silver.
