EDITOR’S NOTE

POCKETSFUL OF CHARACTER

V

ENTURA COUNTY IS AN ANTHOLOGY of stories. They blend and mesh, fade into and out of one another. A few, perhaps, stand alone, islands unaffected, unaffiliated with the whole. But lone wolves are rare. To be sure, character is not constant countywide; it exists in pockets, with nebulous borders. And how one views these pockets of character often says more about the observer than the actual place. Consider Ventura Avenue. What’s your sense of the place? Do you notice popsicle-sticky kids on a family stroll, the rustic bouquet of wood smoke and fresh tortillas drifting on a sea breeze? Or do you focus instead on tags and tattooed mad dogs? Gangland. Oil-rig wasteland. A real estate speculator’s dreamland. Spirit of place isn’t really about the distinctive aspects of an area, it’s more about perception: your take is your truth. And while the accepted snobbery dictates that The Avenue is to be avoided, I happen to think such a hands-off attitude adds to its character. (My neighbor might disagree.) Nothing is absolute when it comes to spirit of place. It is an ambiguous concept at best. But as content for this “themeless” issue filtered in, we began to see the stories as pieces of a jigsaw puzzle— elements of the county’s overarching character. Their sum doesn’t represent a complete picture, of course. Not even close. Just think of these articles as chapters in a heavy book, a compendium of tales that when taken as a whole would tell the comprehensive story of Ventura County. Of course such a book will never exist. The pockets of character are ever-shifting, and the author’s innate assumptions and preconceptions would sully each chapter anyway. But enough of this left-brained ramble. Let’s move on to the

issue at hand, and some Freudian free association, starting with the first word that comes to my mind: Haley Ranch (cover + page 39): Fortunate. We’re fortunate to live in a county that retains a strong connection with early California, presprawl. My family arrived in California in 1911. In 2013, I park on the overlook above this property and command my kids to look, to suck it up, to appreciate it. Off Market Tasting Trail (page 35): Juice. Wine starts out as fruit juice. So why did it take so long for wine tasting to come down to earth? California wines knocked the beret off France’s noggin back in ‘76 at the Judgment of Paris competition. Nearly four decades on, we can finally sample wines without suffering the pretentious… judgment of Paris. Casa Jones (page 15): Shining. Some people just shine. This couple shines. And as Braden and DeNai Jones rise above mediocrity, they pull the rest of us into their orbit, elevating the standards by which we live. Their home looks like it’d smell of plumeria and Asian incense. Iron & Resin (page 20): Grown-up. Thom Hill and Jackson Chandler aren’t old. But they’re not young. Or broke. And neither are many of the people associated with what’s traditionally been considered a lowbrow lifestyle: surfing and riding motorcycles. Kid stuff? I think not. Creativity and entrepreneurialism merge on Main Street to capture part of Ventura’s spirit of place. That’s my take, anyway. Sullied as it is with innate assumptions and preconceptions. — Matt mattk@ventanamonthly.com

BEHIND THE HEDGE

In the hills of Ventura, a family-friendly abode offers respite from the demands of a growing business.

I

BY LESLIE A. WESTBROOK • PHOTOGRAPHY BY NANCY NEIL

t’s no wonder that Braden and DeNai Jones chose a soothing palette for their hilltop home overlooking Ventura. After all, the founders and creative forces behind Petunia Pickle Bottom and Sons of Trade spend their workdays surrounded by prints and design prompts of all shapes, sizes, and colors, not to mention a staff of 30 employees and a constant buzz of activity.

Their family domicile is located just a mile from the international, trends-driven company’s corporate headquarters, but it feels a million miles—and a thousand or so color swatches—away. While cozy and calm, the three-bedroom, two-bath house hidden behind a hedge bursts with restrained creativity combined with a sense of whimsy. More about that in a moment. The couple likely crossed paths while growing up in the same Ventura neighborhoods, but they actually met “right after high school” and have been together ever since. They both attended Cal Poly before traveling the world, first for fun then for business. “We had nothing to lose at the time. No house, no kids, no money,” Braden recalls about their “gap year” after college graduation. They traveled to Europe and Alaska to plan and dream about what their future might hold. Before launching Petunia Pickle Bottom (short for DeNai’s perky childhood nickname: Petunia Pickle Bottom Hortense Horsefeather Wilemina Birdbath) in 2000, the pair settled in Santa Barbara where Braden started a software business and DeNai taught school. Utilizing Denai’s innate talent for design, they made colorful diaper bags and other goods to make maternity and early parenthood more stylish. The company saw 38 percent growth last year. All the more reason to build a retreat from the growing demands of business.

OCTOBER 2013

Upon entering the front garden and entrance of their house, a sense of calm prevails. Church bells ring in the distance, the windows are open and cool, Pacific breezes add to the atmosphere. Braden and their two boys, Sutton and Miller, especially enjoy working and playing outside in the garden. Perhaps this is where some of their cherished bird’s nests, which are incorporated into the décor, were discovered. The couple house-hunted for a year. DeNai now admits she is glad that her husband made her wait until they found “just the right place.” They even went around the neighborhood putting letters of introduction into the mailboxes of houses they were interested in purchasing. On one of their “mailbox solicitations,” they ran into friends who told them about their home to be. They hightailed it over and a deal was struck with the previous owner—before it even went on the market. “We didn’t want a fixer-upper,” noted the busy couple. Which is understandable considering the demands of their global business. Braden travels to China four to five times a year, DeNai spends two days a week in the office designing, and the entire family travels to Asia for a month every year. In addition to China, the kids have been to Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Japan. Items in the house were sourced from catalogues, flea markets, local stores, and some unexpected places. The step-down living room has soft, natural linen furnishings (no patterns here) and a carved wooden deer head presiding over the fireplace.

Five-year-old Miller’s room (this page) incorporates a soothing shade of grey. The modern glider chair by Monte is a remnant of his infancy, the vintage pony was a flea market find, and the framed Atlas moth was purchased in Vietnam. OPPOSITE: DeNai went with an ultra-clean look for the master bedroom, attempting to recreate the “sense of calm” she feels at some of her favorite travel spots. (Sutton and Miller have other ideas.) OPENING PAGE: Natural light and a neutral palette merge with an eclectic mix of found objects in the living room. Outside, Braden installed a climbing wall where the kids can monkey around.

Vintage biology charts from Ventura College, where DeNai’s father taught the subject, flank each side of the fireplace. Natural items like seashells collected by the boys are carefully displayed alongside air plants in a wooden container on the coffee table. Seven-year-old Sutton’s prize-winning painting of persimmons in a bird’s nest is also proudly displayed in the living room. Whimsical art by Airom Bleicher hangs in the dining room, the jazziest room in the house, with metallic wallpaper and the stuffed head of an African eland. But the piece de resistance is a stunning hardwood dining table, hand-built by Braden. Several generations of black-and-white family photos line the hallway: Braden’s father in uniform when he played ball for the Los Angeles Angels, then later at his desk as a sheriff; DeNai’s parents in their youth; and images of their own family of four, which add a sense of continuity. The boys’ rooms are an unexpected blast. Sutton’s is painted a robin egg blue, with accents of dresser drawers and accessories painted black providing a striking contrast. A huge map of the United States (the names of the states can be filled in with chalk) hangs above a vintage school desk where Sutton does his homework without the distraction of his five-year-old sibling. Younger brother Miller’s room is painted a soft gray and has wallpaper with a calming tree design. Goldfish in a tank swim out of harm’s way as a large stuffed tiger pokes his head out from a teepee. The couple preserved many of the nearly century-old house’s original architectural details, including vintage light fixtures and bathroom tiles, but have also created an oasis for themselves on the other side of the house. Here the doors open from an all-white master bedroom to a gurgling fountain and mise-en-scene, a pleasant patio that seemingly reflects their Asian travels with greenery and imported dark wooden furniture, as well as a hammock that could easily transport one to another space and time. Despite future house projects—perhaps the kitchen at some point—there may be another family home in the future. “We like the privacy, and riding bikes to Farmer’s Market. And it’s close to the office and surf,” says Braden, his wife agreeing. “But I grew up on land, and our boys are growing … we might like to build one day.” Whether they stay or go, they assured me this house will remain in their family, as well as close to their hearts, forever. v sonsoftrade.com, petunia.com

RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM: A ‘20s-era Wedgewood stove and vintage antlers in the kitchen; Sutton’s travel-themed bedroom; wallpaper from Osborne & Little, photos from both sides of the family, and a half-moon table topped with the boys’ bird’s nest collection.

FREEDOMRIDERS Thom Hill and Jackson Chandler on Ventura roots and the business of branding. CONVERSATION AND PORTRAITS BY RYAN A. SMITH

I

ron & Resin is the passion project of Thom Hill, a Venturan behind national businesses such as Coastal Classics. Inspired by the motorcycle and surfing cultures Hill enjoys during downtime, the brand officially took shape once designer Jackson Chandler was hired to work with CC and the pair realized they share the same hobbies as well as a keen-eye vision for the label. In less than two years, the pair has built Iron & Resin into an international brand recognized for quality and creativity, but equally noted for its Ventura roots, look, and goal of keeping its products forged in the USA. Beyond

simply selling soft goods, though, Thom, Jackson, and the IR crew often host events like local motorcycle races, country rides, campouts, and outdoor concerts that celebrate Ventura County’s natural offerings and welcome outsiders to explore the region. The Iron & Resin flagship store—a meticulously curated sensory experience located in the heart of Downtown Ventura—recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, and the guys were back in town after a summer of tradeshow travels. The timing was right for a discussion about their Ventura-centric brand.

How does Iron & Resin celebrate the spirit of Ventura? Thom: We wanted to create something that paid homage to Ventura and the lifestyle we have here. There’s ocean out front and mountains in our backyard; we have amazing surf and amazing roads to ride, and lots of outdoor opportunities. I think Ventura just feels real. It is one of the few cities that’s hung onto its authenticity. Jackson: Ventura still has that Main Street America feel. It breathes soul into the brand, into our direction, because Iron & Resin is from here. There’s a lot of history here, being a mission and pioneer town. We tie into that. We have a vintage aesthetic, we look to past eras. It’s a very natural relationship. How has your Ventura base—including the Main Street store and studio space on The Avenue—affected your designs, your identity? Thom: This is a passion project. We want it to feel like it’s coming from a personal place, reflecting things Jackson and I are both into. People take a second look at us because we’re not from LA, because this is something unique. People come into the store all the time and say, “This feels like Ventura.” We didn’t set out to make it that way; I think it just sort of organically happened. Jackson: People say it looks like Ventura. The color palates are a little different, the design may be a little foggy or a little windy, similar to how Ventura can be. Are there advantages to being from here? Thom: There are plenty of fashion brands that react to what is trending in the market. We’re trying to reflect what we love to do, be inspired by it, and make things we would buy and wear. I think that comes across as something real and tangible. Jackson: Ventura affords us the ability to do the things inspiring us to create the brand: surf and ride and be outdoors. Our brand is very visual and the imagery is created by actually going out and living life. How do you see blending the riding and surfing lifestyles? Or is it more one or the other? Jackson: That’s a good question. They’re very similar activities. There’s a sameness: both are very solo, singular activities. Riding your bike on curvy roads is a lot like carving on a wave, it’s just you and nature. The brand has gone beyond just moto and surfing. You’re pushing an outdoors lifestyle—freedom.

Thom: Exactly. The bike, surfboard, your car, it doesn’t matter what gets you there, those are just tools in the garage quiver that allow us freedom. Whether going for a ride after work, dawnpatrolling a surf, or being in the mountains, it all ties to the emotional connection you get when being outside and having a little adrenaline coursing through your veins. Why is it important to produce handmade and hand-touched, Made in the USA products? Wouldn’t it be more profitable to tag Chinese-made items? Thom: Not necessarily. There are definite advantages to doing things locally, on a smaller scale. With the brand, we’re trying to create something that has a very personal, emotional attachment. If we weren’t hand-touched, handcrafted, you get into mass-production and lose that connection with your customer. Your flagship store on Main Street is a great space. How’s the reception been from other business owners there? Thom: Overall, it’s been overwhelmingly positive. Other merchants on Main Street have been very supportive and recognize we add value to downtown. Our goal is to create a destination for people to come to from outside the area, and obviously those people also walk around. The more businesses adding value to Main Street, the better for all of us. Jackson: We’re just another piece of that puzzle, creating a culture downtown where people want to go and spend time. Is it fair to say that Iron & Resin reflects something of a grownup, entrepreneurial side of what’s traditionally been a pair of lowbrow lifestyles? Jackson: It’s a valid assessment. We’ve purposely made it a little more grownup than your typical lowbrow, F-U type of motorcycle rebel, because we’re not those types of guys. The fully grownup assessment I might not completely agree with, but I guess it’s more polished than the rebellious tags people stigmatize the surf or motorcycle scenes with. Thom: I think it’s pretty accurate. It’s correct to say the activities have always existed; we’ve just taken them and presented in a different way. All we’ve done is taken the aesthetic that exists here and put it in a form that is encapsulated in a space where people can experience it. In the store, you smell the leather, gasoline, and surf wax, and we are always changing the products and the flow.

OPPOSITE: Jackson Chandler (l.) and Thom Hill (r.) draw on their own life experiences to curate a collection of one-off goods that embody a facet of Ventura. RIGHT, FROM TOP: In the Iron & Resin “Garage” on Main Street, a mixed quiver of pointinspired sliders, a cushy couch, and a stack of post-session reading material; Red Wing leather and American workwear meet Ventura brick and mortar. Tell us about some of the local events you’ve coordinated. Thom: We did an event last spring called the Hooligan Hoedown, where we rode back to Camp Scheideck behind Ojai, at Reyes Creek Lodge. Everybody camped out, we had great music with a big barbecue. We have another Hooligan Hoedown coming up, a fall version at Pappy & Harriet’s in Joshua Tree. We also put together the Hooligan Derby, which was what we called a “Run What U Brung” event. You can race any motorcycle you want. An event to ride your motorcycle on a dirt track, race around the track with your friends. Just amateurs and friends, a really fun time. We plan to do more of those.

ABOVE: Mike McQuillen, R&D in the VC. Authenticity is at the core of Iron & Resin. TOP: Adrenalin-fueled rides and seasonal gatherings celebrate the outdoors lifestyle while building the brand. Next up, the Hooligan Hoedown Fall Campout, October 26. Details on the I&R blog or by calling 805.643.0737.

What else is on tap? Thom: We’re trying to grow the wholesale end, domestically and internationally. We have a retail store opening in Paris, of all places; we’re getting traction in Western Europe right now. And we have a new distributor in Japan. Jackson: The line is growing. We’re making exciting products on the apparel side, and also accessories. Thom: At the end of the day, we’re doing this because it affords us a lifestyle to go out and do what we love, mix business with pleasure. We never want to be stuck here 12 hours a day, grinding out the brand. We want to go out and have fun and be inspired to create something cool to share. v DROP IN at 324 East Main Street, Ventura or RIDE ALONG online at ironandresin.com.

Finally A Solution for Peripheral Neuropathy Get Rid of the Pain in Your Legs and Feet PATIENTS FLOOD OFFICE OF VENTURA SPINE & NERVE CENTER FOR LATEST FDA CLEARED TECHNOLOGY

Dear Neuropathy Suffer: ASK YOURSELF THESE FOUR QUESTIONS

1. Do your hands or feet feel like you’re wearing an invisible “glove” or “sock” over them? 2. Does it feel like someone’s stabbing you with thousands of sharp needles? 3. Are you extremely sensitive to touch…feeling burning, freezing and electric “shocks” into your arms or legs? 4. Are you tormented by numbness, tingling, loss of feeling or even weakness in your muscles?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, chances are you may have a condition called “neuropathy”. If you’ve been suffering with this crushing and debilitation condition long enough though, I’m probably not telling you anything you don’t already know. But, the question is…what are you doing about it? How are you treating your neuropathy right now…and is it giving you the relief you so desperately are praying for? Yes! There’s Still Hope… Let me say this bluntly. It doesn’t matter if you’ve tried every “conservative” medical treatment available… have tried grueling rounds of physical therapy…have taken enough drugs to choke a horse…been to dozens of different types of doctors…or even tried home remedies including pills, potions or lotions you found on the internet.

If nothing has giving you true, lasting, long term relief, you’ll want to pay attention to this entire report. Why? The information I’m about to share with you has been life altering for people just like you who were once suffering. from this debilitating condition and are finally finding relief…safely and naturally.

Here’s what some of our patients have to say… “The tingling & numbness in my feet has greatly subsided! Carolyn F., Ventura“

From this moment on, forget about everything you’ve heard or read about what you “must” do to treat neuropathy. Forget about anything that you’ve ever believed about having to live with this imprisoning pain. Because-starting with this moment-you’re about to discover the best natural solution I know to finally find relief from this painful condition.

“My feet & leg pain is considerably better! Jerry P., Thousand Oaks

As impossible as it may seem right now…picture yourself actually enjoying a walk around the neighborhood without having to rest along the way. Picture yourself playing with your children or grandchildren, bending over with more ease. Sleeping a full night of restful sleep. Not having to live on Neurontin or other drugs with harmful side-effects. More important, just being able to do the simple day to day stuff that you used to take for granted. Finally, being able to start enjoying your life again…on your own terms…without as many restrictions…and with much less pain.

Dr. Steven Alff, Doctor of Chiropractic, is the Director of the Ventura Spine and Nerve Center. Since 1982, he has worked with thousands of Ventura County residents to restore, and then, transform their health naturally so they live a long, full quality life without ever taking mind-numbing medications and having risky unnecessary surgeries.

What Makes Our Unique Approach To Neuropathy So Successful? It all starts with diagnosing the problem correctly after reviewing your health history and performing some painless, but thorough, tests…and then if you qualify, following up with a comprehensive layered approach to helping you alleviate naturally, every major symptom of your neuropathy. Most importantly, the therapies and technologies we use are totally natural and don’t carry dangerous side-effects as most drugs do. To me, that’s always a better option than living on drugs and relying on chemicals that alter the normal balance and function of your body. My non-drug, non-invasive treatment program uses the very latest natural technology for the treatment of peripheral neuropathy including Neuroanalgesia. This new therapy uses special energy frequencies which talks to the affected nerves involved so they begin to function properly again and stops your pain! We introduced it to Ventura County, we are the most experienced using it and it is changing the lives of our patients! If needed, I also use low-level light therapy. This non-invasive healing therapy has been proven to help some neuropathy sufferers. We combine vibration therapy & intermiitent contraction/release therapies to increase blood flow and reduce inflammatory reactions in the body. We might also give you therapy you can do at home! The plan, however, is customized for each individual person’s needs.

”I was almost ready for a wheelchair ; now I can walk without any assistance!” Ron C.., Moorpark

“Dr. Alff ’s Neuropathy program has changed my life!” Hanna C., Oxnard About the Ventura Spine & Nerve Center:

Do You Qualify For Our Program? Pain is a thief. It steals precious moments and time in your life...time you can never get back. That’s not okay. This, in my opinion, is the most important commodity we have. Why waste precious time living in pain and struggling to get through the day when you can get your quality of life back...the life you used to enjoy before you were in pain all the time. IF YOU READ NOTHING ELSE… READ THIS Here’s my offer to you: I’m going to give you your entire first day Consultation & Exam for just $39. Even better, if I feel that you aren’t a candidate for my Neuropathy program I insist that you receive a full refund of your initial $39... How Does That Sound? And, if you were wondering, here’s everything that’s included in this special offer…. A Comprehensive Neuropathy Consultation and History …A Thorough Qualifying Multi-Point Painless Neuropathy Examination….....and My Recommended Plan of Action. Here’s how to take advantage of this special offer right now: Simply call my office at (805) 830-7523 before October 31 and tell whoever answers the phone that you are calling to set up your “Neuropathy Pain Relief Evaluation”. I’m confident you will be delighted you did.

A

n industrial park zoned for manufacturing off Telephone Road in Ventura isn’t where you’d expect to find award-winning boutique wines and craft beer, but then again, it’s exactly as it should be. “We’re considered a manufacturer because we use raw materials to create a finished product,” says winemaker Marlow Barger, who together with his wife, Janis, opened Plan B Cellars (more on the name later) just last year. With four wineries and a craft brewery scattered among irrigation and tile wholesalers, the DMV, window tinting installers, and plumbing suppliers, the newly dubbed Off Market Tasting Trail may seem out of place, but it’s certainly blazing a trail into the hearts of more adventurous would-be connoisseurs. Plan B resides in an interesting neighborhood for a winery: on one side, there’s a granite fabricator; on the other, the railroad tracks. Not only is the rent cheaper in industrial parks, there’s a quirky charm factor. “We have a toast whenever the train rolls by,” Marlow says, looking out past the roll-up doors to the railroad tracks where ocean breezes flow through. It’s those curious traditions and the view past the tracks to an agricultural field, the harbor, and beyond to the Channel Islands that bring wine lovers in. It sure beats a two-hour drive up the coast. And the wine’s pretty darn good, too.

The industrial contemporary interior at Surf Brewery. Specializing in typical Rhone varietals— Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah—using grapes sourced from Santa Barbara County and Edna Valley, Marlow makes only reds. One of their more popular wines, a dry rosé, comes with a fun gimmick: a refillable, full-liter Italian glass bottle with a swing top. It’s sort of like what their neighbor down the street, Surf Brewery, does with glass refillable growlers, which keep patrons coming back for more. The growlers over at Surf, though, get filled with craft beer made with ingredients sourced from around the world. If a 64-ounce growler’s too big, pints and five-ounce samplers are also available. The taproom and brewery offer a relaxed vibe in a large converted warehouse with surfboards, surf memorabilia, and surf art adorning the walls and vintage surf punk piped in through the speakers. Since opening in 2011, the business has taken off. Among the accolades, Surf boasts a gold medal from the Los Angeles County Fair for its County Line Rye Pale Ale. microbrew in the county, it’s no wonder the place is usually packed. But as co-founder Doug Mason, a homebrewer since the late-‘80s, explains, “We haven’t aggressively promoted any of this. Craft brewing over the last decade is exploding.” A homebrew shop at the front of the taproom and class offerings have helped them tap into a new niche: turning customers into hobbyists. Escabeche food truck, routinely parked right outside, offers hungry beer drinkers tacos, chile rellenos, and sopes. Just across the parking lot, Panaro Brothers Winery has an intimate space to taste their affordable wines (half-bottles start at just eight dollars), inspired by their Italian grandfather’s traditional winemaking style. Reds and whites sourced from Santa Barbara and Monterey counties are handmade using a small press just like they were taught when they were kids. David Panaro’s quick wit comes alive between sips, as he doles out wine trivia and bad jokes. “You know what you’re supposed to do if a bottle of wine won’t breathe?” he asks. “Give it mouth-to-mouth.” He and his brother Vito started making wine

here nearly five years ago, but the tasting room opened just a year-and-a-half ago when things started to get interesting with the newly formed urban tasting trail. David, a geologist for the County by day, felt that going into the family wine business was foolproof. “You can’t go wrong with wine no matter the economy,” because, he says, people drink when times are tough, and they drink when times are good. Farther down the street in a fancy modern tasting room, Gary and Karen Stewart’s Four Brix Winery, which opened in 2011 a few months after Surf, is on its third harvest. “Brix” is the term for measuring sugar in grapes, and “Four” references the owners’ favorite spots for wine: Italy, Spain, France, and California. Gary, a roofing contractor, started making wine in their garage in 2001. When he decided to pursue winemaking more seriously, he took classes in viticulture at UC Davis. “After several thousand dollars worth of classes, I learned you just need good fruit to make good wine,” he says.

Their grape choices are paying off and getting noticed. Their “Scosso” Cab-MerlotSangiovese blend received 89 points from Wine Spectator and a gold medal from Sunset magazine, which will feature Four Brix in its October issue. The first spot on the trail was Ventura Wine Company, which opened in 2001. Owner Nick

Fisher wanted a place for food and wine tasting, so in 2008 he opened The Cave, where Enomatic tasting machines offer one- to five-ounce tastes of 32 different wines with the swipe of a prepaid card and the push of a button, making this is the candy store for oenophiles. Small plates of wine-friendly food allow patrons to have a full gastronomic experience in an ambient space

molded with gunite to look and feel like a wine cave. While The Cave is the trail’s veteran, Plan B is the new kid on the block. But the Bargers are in their early-sixties, and they’re banking on this new venture as their retirement. In fact, the name of the winery is a nod to their newly adopted and not-so-traditional retirement plan. Marlow, who’s been in construction for 40 years, says he likes to be challenged, and after apprenticing with Mike Brown of Camarillo’s Cantara Cellars, he decided, with Janis’ urging, to forge ahead, investing a big chunk of their IRA, even though it seemed risky. “We ran some financial scenarios, which we ignored,” he says with a smile. They’ve kept their plan simple and lean, yet they’ve managed to make their warehouse space comfortable and pleasant. Picking bins tilted on their sides cleverly border the outdoor patio adjacent to the tracks, and bench seating at tables topped with burlap tablecloths allow patrons a relaxing space for a BYO-picnic. Having the support of the other four establishments on the trail, he says, has been helpful, because they all encourage and help each other, which leads to everyone’s success. “A rising tide,” Marlow says, “floats all boats.” v Visit offmarketstreet.com for detailed info and a map of the Off Market Tasting Trail.

A legacy Roger Haley with a trio of his historic wagons and a bucolic backdrop of the western Ojai Valley.

In bucolic pockets from T.O. to Ojai, Ventura County cattlemen and ranchers are keeping the cowboy spirit alive. City girl ANGELIQUE LACOUR saddles up at the century-old Haley Ranch. PHOTOGRAPHY BY RUDY LOUPIAS

W

ill Hobson may have been driving too fast on the dry, dusty road near Ferndale Ranch in Santa Paula, but safety wasn’t on the top of his mind. After all, there was only one other car in Ventura County at the time. He may have been musing on the celebration he’d organized to honor the newly completed courthouse in Ventura and the Ventura River Bridge. Or perhaps he was thinking about the completion of new roads between Santa Barbara and Ventura, a project he’d spearheaded after seeing the causeways of Europe, or mentally reviewing his plan for the Maricopa Highway since the survey had just been completed. But we’ll never know for sure, as the 48-year-old visionary and entrepreneur did, in fact, encounter another vehicle on that quiet country road. He tried in vain to prevent a head-on collision. His tires stuck in the soft dirt. His car rolled, plummeting down the canyon. Ironically, this tragedy made Will Hobson the first automobile fatality in Ventura County. His widow, Effie, and their only child, Edith, who soon married Walter Hoffman, severed the entrepreneurial partnership Will shared with his

older brother, Abram. Thus marked the beginning of the 100-year history of Haley Ranch, a landmark that’s being celebrated this year by Hobson’s great-grandson Roger Haley, a living link to the Hobson-Hoffman-Haley legacy. In 1921, Haley’s grandparents, Walter and Edith Hoffman, built the 4,400-acre Rancho Casitas on land situated ten miles northwest of Ventura near the base of today’s Casitas Dam. The Hoffmans were known for raising high-quality thoroughbred racehorses and Hereford cattle. “In the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, my grandfather ran Mexican stocker steers and Corriente cattle in the rougher country and crossbred them with the Herefords,” Haley said. “He raised remounts for the cavalry, draft horses that were used on the Oxnard plains, and had some of the first Palomino stallions that originated the Palomino color in horses.” But the sparkle in Haley’s eye dims as he explains how everything changed when Rancho Casitas became Lake Casitas. “In 1947 my grandfather had purchased 164 contiguous acres to grow alfalfa—he also planted apricot and walnut groves—and named this section Rancho Corjo,” Haley said.

Rancho Casitas has been in Roger Haley’s family since the early-1900s when his great-grandfather, Will Hobson, ran Corriente cattle on its rolling hills. Here, Roger carries on a family tradition in fall 2013.

“After the condemnation of our land to make way for the lake, we were forced to utilize the fringes and the cattle operation was moved to the northeast side of Rancho/Lake Casitas on 440 acres.” A new chapter began in 1958 when Roger was 10 years old and the lake was officially opened, although “it was just a mud puddle that didn’t fill until 1969,” he recalls. “My grandfather was dead, my grandmother had moved to Ventura, and to keep things going my parents moved their thoroughbreds, quarter horses, and performing horses to Rancho Corjo. Rancho Mi Solar, which means ‘my own ranch,’ and this eventually became Haley Ranch.” As he gets into the “real meat of the story,” Haley gets a bit riled up, stressing that his passion is “educating the Vons shopper.” There’s a lot of simple arithmetic that determines the retail cost of a rib eye steak, but there’s more to success in the complex cattle business than just understanding it: “The secret is to change out here in the woods so you can sell what the housewife will buy.” From the beginning of his tenure at the helm of Haley Ranch, Roger has been adapting, reinventing, and retooling to do whatever it takes to keep the

Hobson-Hoffman-Haley story going for his three sons, Bret, Bradley, and Bryan, and to live out his own life as a cattle rancher. In the 1990s when Bradley was in high school, he got into roping and wanted to raise event cattle. But even though raising Corrientes has been lucrative, Roger said, “it isn’t enough in today’s world, so we are getting back into beef production.” The catalyst that continues to drive every innovation and recalibration in the cattle ranching business is as old as the business itself: drought. “In the last six years, our national cow numbers have dwindled to the lowest they have ever been in American history,” Haley said. “I don’t have a clue where the American cattle business will be five years from now.” Yet he welcomes the next era with excitement and a bring-it-on attitude. In 1999, a week before his mother died from Alzheimer’s, she summoned Roger and his family to her home. It had been several months since she had been lucid, but on that day she was crystal clear. “She asked me to please keep the ranch alive for my sons and grandchildren,” Haley recalled, his voice full of pride. “And that I plan to do—because this is the greatest place on earth to live.” v
