Trickle Up It seems so simple, philanthropy. There’s a need. People recognize it. A civilized society addresses it. And the world is a little better off.

But of course, there are complicating factors.

Politics. Egos. The question of how to divide the pie amongst the needy. It’s not a simple game, philanthropy. Beyond the back pats and tax deductions, does anyone help just to help?

Because they really care?

Absolutely they do. Judy Bysshe (page 36) does. Either that or she’s a hell of an actor. It’s not just the obvious twinkle in her eye. Or the one-liners that sound straight out of a Berkeley handbook, circa-‘60: “Trickle up is always more effective than trickle down. … We do our best for ourselves when we are doing our best for one another.” It’s the whole package— the life she leads.

When I first met Judy, she was in her garden gathering fresh herbs and veggies. “You want some basil?” she asked. And from there she was off, expatiating on the theme of giving, particularly to local environmental causes. Not giving of money per se, but rather giving of time and energy. Lots of energy. The woman crackles with it. She sparks and boils and by God she gets things done.

from the trough of environmentalism. Since the early ‘70s Judy Bysshe has supported the eco-movement on a large scale, taking altruistic gallops through the fields of green. She’s left her mark on Ventura County from the Santa Monica Mountains to the Ventura River and back into the Sespe. People like Judy make me question whether I do enough. And that sort of introspection is generally the impetus to change.

Nearly thirty years ago one of my best friends took a left turn away from the public school system and into a place called Happy Valley, a boarding school in Ojai with only a hundred students. We’d grown up on a dirt road in an unincorporated nook of Ventura County, and I couldn’t understand why he’d want to prolong the isolation.

They’ve since changed the name from Happy Valley to Besant Hill. And there’s a new head of school: Paul Amadio (page 43), who plays the role to a hilt, inspiring students to use their passion and discover their true calling in life. Apparently, it’s still a happy place.

Did I mention that was nearly thirty years ago? Time flies: a heartening cliché, considering the current financial madness. One day we’ll look back. We may not laugh, but we’ll look back and it’ll seem like just yesterday we were in line at Washington Mutual.

We reserved some editorial space at the end of the Judy Bysshe article so she could plug a few local nonprofits. When you have a moment, please visit their websites. Times are tight. But most likely they’re even tighter for one of your neighbors.

The 2009 For d Fle x dar es t o b e diff er en t. Its contemporary design provoked strong opinions (mostly positive) from nearly everyone I met during a recent seven-day test drive around Ventura County. To be sure, the Flex is like no other vehicle on the road. Which means it’s not for everyone.

But Ford knew that going in.

With the exception of the driver’s seat, all of the seatbacks fold flat to open up the interior for virtually any cargo-loading situation—including seven passengers. The powerful V6 engine is mated to a smooth shifting six-speed automatic transmission and a fully independent suspension, which makes the Flex drive and ride like an entry-level luxury sedan.

From its planted stance and broad shoulders—flanked by signature side grooves—to its distinctive multi-panel Vista Roof, Ford designers have crated a provocative vehicle. In a world of easily recognizable automobiles, this one is hard to define. Its prominent stance is a key design element setting it apart from all other vehicles. Just park the Flex next to an SUV or Crossover.

The proportions immediately take you by surprise.

Capping the horizontal design cues in bold contrast is the Flex’s unique flat roof. Available in just two colors, White Suede or Brilliant Silver, the roof contrasts stylishly with the exterior paint palette. The Flex’s multi-panel Vista Roof adds even more distinction, and is only available as an option on the Flex SEL and Limited models. The Vista Roof features four glass panels that provide abundant natural light to occupants of all three rows. The forward panel is a power moonroof that opens to let in fresh air. And all four panels have easy-to-use shades when you want to keep the light out.

The fully independent suspension system provides comfort and precision, with virtually no noise, vibration, or harshness. Up front is a gas-pressurized MacPherson strut setup with rear-facing L-shaped lower control arms with hydro-bushings, coil springs, and a 32 mm stabilizer bar.

The rear features a multi-link setup with upper and lower control arms, coil springs, gas-charged shocks, and a 22 mm stabilizer bar.

The all-new 2009 Ford Flex has to be driven to really appreciate its finer points. Just judging by the outside styling isn’t fair to the vehicle or to the consumer. Oddly, the more you dislike the Flex, the more you come to appreciate it. It’s not for everyone. But this versatile vehicle may well represent the new direction in people and cargo hauling. v

A cupcake craze is sweeping the country.

Oprah is raving about Sprinkles in Beverly Hills, Dots is about to open a new store in Pasadena, and the TV show What About Brian? created whole plot lines about one character whose dream it was to own a cupcake store.

Now, with the birth of Michelle Michel’s Couture CupCakery, Ventura County gets its tiny cake too.

The word “couture” conjures thoughts of meticulously made, hand-stitched, avantgarde clothing—often impractical and ludicrously expensive. The word “cupcake” brings to mind summery childhood birthday parties, baking with grandma, and fighting over the one with the most frosting. Combine the two and you have a novel concept: custom-made, individual dessert creations that simultaneously make a fashion statement and give you the warm fuzzies.

Couture CupCakery made its debut this spring at Weaver Wines’ Ventura Women and the City event, a fundraiser to benefit the nonprofit Women’s Economic Ventures.

Michel, an Oxnard native who had just procured her business license and a space in which to bake, called Seana Weaver, one of the event’s organizers, and offered to donate cupcakes. But not just any cupcakes. She designed unique flavors to represent four main characters in the movie that set the tone for the evening, Sex and the City: Cosmopolitan, Bailey’s and Kaluha, Passionfruit Mojito, and Chocolate-dipped Strawberry.

That debut of her cupcakes, presented on satin ribbon-edged silver serving tiers, yielded six more orders. Weaver herself became one of Michel’s first clients and ordered cupcakes for several subsequent events. “They are incredibly unique, and guests love them!” gushed Weaver.

“Each is like a little fashion piece.”

Although Michel loves the challenge of meeting high-end and unusual orders with her custom business, her motto is “cupcakes for everyone.” She started baking as a young girl, with her mother and grandmother. Later in life she gained not only a husband (with a somewhat ironic last name), but also two children who love to bake. “I started for very selfish reasons,” she said with a twinkle in her eye. “It’s a lot of fun!”

The feeling she got watching family and

friends respond to her cupcake experiments led her to create more flavors and designs. People suggested she consider selling her cupcakes, so she did a bit of research. When she learned how popular cupcake shops had become across the country—and realized that her local area didn’t have a bakery that specialized in them—she asked herself, “Why shouldn’t it be me?”

For now, Michel doesn’t have a retail store; she bakes part-time out of a rented commercial kitchen and delivers her products to clients. She dreams of having a store, and even has a vision of how it would look: dressed in damask and dripping with chandeliers. But she’s taking this endeavor one scoop at a time, striving to do it right. Starting next year she hopes to pursue baking for more wedding and big events.

She has over forty-five flavors, including a buttermilk maple syrup Breakfast Pancake Cupcake with maple buttercream, an After Dinner Mint chocolate mint cupcake with chocolate mint ganache and mint buttercream, and a Cup of Pink Lemonade Cupcake. Two of her flavors—Jeter, Jeter Pumpkin Eater and White Diamond, a white chocolate cupcake with whipped white chocolate ganache—are named after her children.

So far, the most popular flavors are Cinnabun and The Island, a coconut cupcake filled with pineapple, topped with cream cheese frosting, coconut, pecans, and pineapple slices.

She also sells organic cupcakes, and even three varieties of what she calls PupCups for dogs.

Michel’s cupcakes are remarkable in appearance, taste, and texture. The chocolate cupcakes are rich and moist like chewy brownies with crunchy edges, while her vanilla versions are slightly spongy, with a delicate flavor. Her martini cupcakes are tart and just sweet enough.

She puts her ingredients together in a specific order, being careful not to beat them too much—just to the point of wetness. “Over mixing a cupcake makes it into a muffin,” she explained. She insists on freshness and bakes orders the night before, frosting them just prior to delivery.

Michel, who has a background in social work, found an occupation that combines creativity with her desire to help people. Yet it’s still a selfish occupation. “Cupcakes make people happy,” she said. “I’ve yet to give someone a cupcake and have them not get excited.” v

Côte d'Azur California A “staycation” at Le Merigot in Santa Monica brings the French Riviera home, adding a splash of SoCal casual to the world of European elegance. And you don’t have to fly to get there.

A

Admittedly, I’m the kind of person who becomes giddy when she hears about a hip hotel with a glittering roster of over-the-top features and amenities. If the shower fits 12 people and the room includes an interactive light display or VIP access to ground floor clubs, I’m booking it. But after a recent marathon of stays at trendy hotels, I had been smothered by modern hospitality’s tendency to over-engineer luxury. So when I saw online images of the fresh, sun-stroked interiors of Côte d'Azur-inspired Le Merigot in Santa Monica, I decided a weekend stay was imminent.

Only about 60 miles south of Ventura along the coast, Le Merigot is ideally situated—across the street from the beach, four blocks from the Third Street Promenade, and two blocks from the Santa Monica Pier. A friend compared the property to other local heavies, describing it as something “between Viceroy, Loews, Shutters on the Beach, and Casa Del Mar.” With that description in mind, I drove along Ocean Avenue on a brilliant Saturday afternoon eager to begin my economically responsible “staycation” getaway (preparation

for the Greater Depression) and accelerated right past the hotel. It’s not as if Le Merigot is hidden by a wall of shrubbery.

There is simply something invisible about the boxy façade with its bland walls, unadorned windows, and sparse palm trees. In a visual world where our flighty attention is most often drawn to the conspicuous, Le Merigot’s exterior could not be less so.

But once inside, it becomes clear that the hotel’s exterior is a play at modesty. The lobby’s color palette—warm creams, yellows, and golds accented with the slender, green leaves of potted plants—is reminiscent of the French countryside. A massive disk-shaped blown glass chandelier hangs overhead like the sun hovering over a wheat field. A comfortable living room style arrangement of elegant tables, cloud soft sofas, and white wingback armchairs encourages lounging.

After a flawless check-in, I hurried to my room to prepare for dinner at Cézanne, the hotel’s celebrated restaurant.

My husband was making his way down the coast to meet me, so I had a few moments to assess our fifth floor Deluxe

Balcony room, which was a faithful echo of the lobby’s design and color palette. The warm yellow walls were a subdued version of the romantically aged walls of a Tuscan villa.

The wooden furniture featured contemporary art deco detailing. The bathroom and desk were laced with a thick salmon-colored marble.

And then there was the balcony. From here, I had a partial view of the ocean and a complete view of the pier. I could hear tourists conversing below as they rode bicycles along the winding beach path and swung on the swing sets. Sea gulls cried and kids hollered as they plummeted earthward on the pier’s roller coaster. In the distance, a solitary sailboat sat on the horizon as if posing for a painter’s canvas. On the pier, the Ferris wheel slowly circled clockwise, moderating time in languorous turns. I heard a knock at the door and knew it was time for dinner.

ration. Chef Desi Szonntaugh runs the kitchen, preparing classic Provencal fare infused with Mediterranean cuisine with influences from the Pacific Rim. But I was hardly thinking of food when my husband and I walked into the dining room. Instead, I admired ornately framed works of art depicting scenes of idyllic French life. Another chandelier, this one golden orange, cast a gilded glow over the pure white tablecloths and cobalt blue glassware.

Commodious cream-striped banquets lent themselves to casual dining, and a carefully placed silver bucket of chilled still water rested against the wooden wall. Everything was where it should be, artfully balanced and designed for comfort.

We started with steamed manila clams and black mussels in a white wine scallion broth, and moved on to a main course of pan-seared duck breast, which arrived playfully arranged like a splayed fan. After crème brûlée and cappuccino (and about an hour of digestion), we stepped out for some dancing at Bar Copa on Main Street.

Packed with chic boutiques, bars, and restaurants, nearby Main Street is an underrated treasure.

We strolled a few blocks before returning to our room where I found a note on the bed. Turn down service, those angels of hospitality, had left us a quote from Heraclitus: “However far you go, you will never find the boundaries of the soul.” With my head propped on a feather pillow and my body encased in Frette linens, I pondered the boundaries of comfort, wondering if they exist at all.

Early the next morning we did nothing. After sleeping past noon, I ventured to Spa Le Merigot and enjoyed a customized hot stone therapy massage heavily infused with classic Swedish massage. In the eucalyptus steam room, I cleared away any earthly concerns before grabbing my husband and getting out for some fresh coastal air. At the concierge’s recommendation, we rented bikes at a nearby rental store and peddled along the path from Santa Monica down to Venice Beach and back. We stopped to watch the hauntingly graceful yet primal motions of Capoeira dancers, and to observe the general mayhem of Venice Beach, which always seems to include a man cozying up to a reptile.

Late that night, I crept into the lobby with mussed hair and striped pajama pants to borrow a dog-eared paperback from the hotel’s bookshelf. No one jeered or shot me a disapproving look. I went back to our room, donned a fluffy bathrobe and slippers, and ordered a slice of peach cobbler from room service. At most of the trendy hotels where I’ve stayed recently, I never would have left my room in such a state. But doing it here felt okay. v

“If we abandon one person, we abandon ourselves.

If one piece of the fabric tears, the rest of us feel the effect,” Judy Bysshe said recently over a hearty lunch in Ojai. “We are a community that cares about one another, and we take care of one another.”

Bysshe is the embodiment of the politics of inclusion. A thin, blue-eyed beauty in her mid-60s, she has boundless energy. Whether she’s working on one of her philanthropy projects or hiking several times a week with a girlfriend, she is a full participant in life. She wants to take care of everyone she meets—and everyone she has yet to meet.

In a way, Judy Bysshe has protected and cared for

Ventura County for nearly four decades. She is a natural teacher, lecturer, administrator, fundraiser, outdoors person, environmentalist, feminist, carnivore, baker extraordinaire, musician, world traveler, intrepid adventurer, gardener, and politico. She lives the saying “think globally, act locally.” And Ventura County is her locality.

Kate McLean, a consultant on nonprofit management and the past president of the Ventura County Community Foundation, has known Bysshe since 1973.

“Ventura County probably does not realize how much Judy has done for our community,” she said, “and how many projects and organizations are strong because of her ability to get people to come together.”

Raised in B akersfield, Bysshe came to Ventura County as a young adult. She learned about the wilderness from her father, an outdoorsman, and was encouraged by her mother to play musical instruments including accordion and harp. Not your typical upbringing. But the “Future Farmers Queen” of Bakersfield High still had not learned much about the world outside of Kern County.

In 1959, Bysshe went to college and her life was forever changed. She went to UC Berkeley during the heady days of the first flashes of rebellion and the recognition of what would become a full-on charge for equal rights. “Berkeley was perhaps the most exciting place in the world to be at that time,” she said. “I was exposed to a broad and general belief that we could really do something. I came away absolutely knowing I could make a difference in the world.”

After graduation, she returned to Southern California and gradually immersed herself in the new movement of environmentalism. During her time as president of the Environmental Coalition, the group tackled some giants of industry. The coalition stopped Shell Chemical Company’s nighttime dumping of illegal chemicals in the Ventura River by proving it was a navigable waterway, which placed it under federal protection. “We got the first water pollution fines in the State of California on that project,” she said proudly.

Other quests soon followed. Eight electric plants were planned for Ormond Beach in Oxnard. They would have delivered electricity to Los Angeles, but brought only pollution to Ventura County. The coalition limited the construction to the one plant already built. They also stopped channelization on the Santa Paula Creek, and took the EPA to court when their Environmental Impact Report was clearly one they had taken off the shelf from another project. And they helped preserve the Santa Monica Mountains—one of Ventura County’s most beautiful and environmentally sensitive wilderness areas—through the development of the Santa Monica Mountains State Park.

And there were more challenges. “We stopped U.S. Gypsum from strip mining in the Los Padres National Forest,” Bysshe said, “and stopped the building of a sulphuric acid plant in the backcountry that would have drained the aquifer and potentially fouled the wild Sespe Creek.”

By the time she had thrown herself into the environmental causes, Bysshe was also a young mother with two children.

During the battle for Sespe Creek, Bysshe brought her children with her to many rallies and fundraisers. Her daughter, Kelly Lynch, still has vivid memories of those days. “U.S. Gypsum would have required that seventy trucks use Highway 33 on a daily basis,” Lynch said. “We used to leave the rallies early because [mom] drove an old Dodge Dart that belched smoke when it was started.”

Over the years, Bysshe and her younger sister, Joan Fulton, collaborated on many visits to areas in Mexico and Central America that had been ruled by the Maya. Eventually, the middle-aged sisters began to explore the jungles in earnest.

“We are talking slogging through belly deep mud on horseback to go to sites rarely visited,” Fulton said. “We barely avoided an eight-foot venomous chulpate snake whose grip is

so powerful that the fangs can only be removed by cutting the head off … pointless since you’d be dead anyway.”

Then Bysshe decided what she wanted for her sixty-fifth birthday: to go to Machu Picchu in Peru. And to get there the hard way—a four-day trek down through the jungles and up into the oxygen-challenged stratosphere at fourteen thousand feet. The sisters survived the adventure and felt it was worthwhile. However, Bysshe said that as they were heading to other parts of Peru, she told her sister, “Next time I call you with some hair-brained scheme that includes hiking steep and long distances at high altitude, please remind me of how I am feeling right now.”

Somewhere along the line (maybe it was the exposure to exotic locales), Bysshe developed a preference for unusual pets.

When she worked in her husband Fred’s law office, she’d bring along her constant companion, a ferret named Elizabeth Ferret Browning. “Judy adored her ferret and took her everywhere,” her sister said. “Elizabeth even had her own drawer at the office.”

At home in Ojai are two llamas, Fernando and Boliviano, gently living out their geriatric years. They were a fiftieth birthday present from Fred, intended to be helpful as Judy recovered from neck surgery. They carried her belongings, but soon became more than mere pack animals. As pets, they even accompanied Fred on his runs. “Until both the llamas and Fred had to give up running,” Bysshe said.

Outspoken as always, Judy Bysshe is not oblivious to the political turmoil of the past several years. “I do believe that in this time of crisis and seeming defeat, when much of what we have worked for has been dismantled by an administration that exists only to serve corporate interests, we cannot allow ourselves to become defeatist,” she said. “The threats to liberty in this country were never more insidious; we must consistently confront the threat with the truth.” v

It was a marriage made in ac ademic heaven. Paul Amadio was looking for the perfect job to take him to the end of his career, and Besant Hill, a private boarding school in Ojai, was looking for the perfect headmaster to take it to the next level. But before we start this love match, the obvious question: Why would anyone in their right mind want to run a school? Dealing with all those students, teachers, and parents. Overseeing the property, the budget, the fundraising. And that mountain of never-ending paper work!

Amadio (Ah-mah-dee-o), 48, lays it squarely on his own parents. "I grew up around civil servants who gave their lives to education,” he explains. “My father worked for the Massachusetts State Department of Education." What a noble inspiration. Based on that answer, I was ready to interview an egghead.

What a very different picture I got when I walked into his office. Front and center on his desk was a photo of John Lennon, another photo of the Beatles, David Halberstam’s book “The Fifties,” a 12-pack of Diet Coke, a Peter Max print, and his Blackberry.

The only egghead thing was a plaque that read, “Aun aprendo.” Turns out that’s the school motto—Latin for “I am still learning.”

Greeting me was a man with a warm and open face, curly gray hair and a trimmed beard, an easy smile, and an affable voice. A twinkle-in-the-eye guy.

Knowing he was from Massachusetts, I couldn’t resist asking if he was a Red Sox fan. “Yes, of course!” he replied. Which explains the unbridled enthusiasm. After all, being a Red Sox fan requires eternal optimism.

Paul Amadio may have been inspired by his parents, but it was his own hard-wiring that took him on the circuitous route from Massachusetts to Ojai, from acting to education, and finally to being an educator. His trip, like most, had a few detours. The first stemmed from a part in his high school play, “Grease,” which led directly to a role in a professional road company tour of the musical.

After a year on the road, he went to college at Roger Williams, a liberal arts school in Rhode Island, where he studied education and business. But acting was still a passion. So he took himself back on the road, ending up in Chicago where he worked in different resident theater companies, one of which sent him into the inner-city schools of Detroit. "I walked into classrooms that were overstuffed with kids, and my job was to introduce theater games to them,” says Amadio. “What I learned is that kids are all born with extraordinary creativity— and that schools are killing it.”

That experience solidified his path to being an educator, and he went back to New England to start his career.

"When kids are confident and comfortable, they express themselves in ways that are extraordinary,” he says. “If you teach kids to trust themselves, they'll take risks, and that creativity is a mental process you need to give voice to."

Creativit y is the hear t and soul of B esant Hill, a sprawling place on 500 acres in Ojai. Opened in 1946, it was originally named Happy Valley School. Amadio was instrumental in having it renamed two years ago in honor of Annie Besant, the English feminist and theosophist who—along with celebrated friends such as Aldous Huxley and Jiddu Krishnamurti—envisioned the school. (Besant actually bought the 500 acres.)

It was an impressive site with an altruistic philosophy: that students are served by learning cooperation and service, and by eventually leaving the school knowing what they do best. It was just the sort of environment Amadio was looking for when he decided he needed a new challenge and applied for the position of head of school. His educational experience combined with a strong background in marketing and fundraising made him an ideal candidate for the job.

Ojai resident Peter Bellwood, whose daughter Lucy had been at the school for four years, was one of the parents who interviewed Amadio. "I liked what Paul said right at the start: ‘I'm looking to make one more move with my wife and my children,’" Bellwood recalls. "Then, after talking about the school's strengths, he shared what

he thought the school lacked. I thought he was right on the money in his assessment."

While the school is still in the process of recalibrating itself under Amadio’s stewardship, one faculty member has had the advantage of the long view; Tina Leslie, who’s been a teacher at Besant Hill for 21 years, has seen the before and after. “The biggest change since Paul Amadio has taken the helm is the physical plant of the school,” says Leslie. “The school needed a lot of repairs and upgrades, and he has tackled those beautifully.”

He’s also expanded the experiential education program, such as traveling, both domestically and abroad.

Basically, it’s an all-around reconstructive energy that Amadio has brought with him to the school, where he lives in the Besant House with his wife, Donita, their three children, and four dogs.

But these tight financial times require a focus on fundraising. Besant Hill has a steady enrollment of 100 students, 80 percent of whom board. They come from as far away as China, Taiwan, and Africa. While about a quarter of them get financial aid, the full tuition is $38,500 a year. The board wants to expand the $3 million endowment (which doesn’t include the value of the

Of course, the school is nothing without its unique curriculum, which goes way beyond the college prep requirements. The emphasis is on an experiential education—getting outside the classroom. On a post-Katrina trip to New Orleans, students not only studied the history of music and blues, they also helped rebuild and restore houses demolished by the hurricane. They’ve worked on beach restoration at the Channel Islands and in Baja California, and have delivered books via donkey in Egypt, where they set up a traveling library. As Tina Leslie says, “Paul really inspires all the students and staff to find our creative sides and use them.”

Amadio firmly believes that creative expression is the cornerstone of the school, and from that expression, students discover themselves as true learners. He wants kids to get excited about their potential. "Use your passion,” he teaches them.
