EDITOR’S NOTE

THE PURSUIT OF PASSION

T

ALK ABOUT TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING: In the case of Fran Elson (p. 37) as editorial subject, we could’ve focused solely on her elegant art glass. Or her civic involvement, her volunteer work and support of the local arts community. Her backstory alone—born in Kazakhstan in 1944, her family on the run from the Nazis; from there, a move to Siberia and a camp for displaced persons where she spent her early years—would’ve floated a strong profile article. And that house. Forget words, we could’ve built a coffee table book with images of the sleek, Asian-inspired showpiece that she and her husband, Dr. Ed Elson, built on a Somis hilltop. For my part, I’m just glad we got a peek into one of those hilltop homes. For years, I’ve swerved all over SR-34 craning my neck for a better view—and imagining the views from up there. Yet we haven’t had much luck wrangling stories from the low-key community of Somis. By default, our editorial radar frequently picks up subject matter in the area of Ojai. And why not? How not? No other place in the county is so tightly packed with diverse characters, from working-class heroes to Chumash elders and Hollywood imports, who’ve long used the Valley of the Moon as a sort of decompression chamber. But we know the rest of Ventura County is holding too. That in even our most benign suburbs—in some of those anonymous boxes, with his-and-her SUVs parked out front and laser-straight lawn edges—there are people with inspirational stories. There are creative types and philanthropists, craftsmen, home brewers, organic gardeners. So please, forgive the echo: If you know one of these charac-

ters, or have a story idea you can objectively envision on the pages of Ventana, drop me an email. (Look down and to the right for my address.) Now, back to the Elson’s house. We all have different ideas about what comprises a Dream Home. Mine would be a contemporary number with elements of Japanese architecture and landscaping. It’d be well stocked with art made by friends and keepsakes from my travels around the world, and have martini views of the ocean—the sort of views that inspire one to linger at home. I’m not suggesting that Fran and Ed Elson are living my dream, but I do dream about a house like theirs. If I were more nimble with a chisel, I’d probably fantasize about Sherry and Bill Loehr’s place (p. 13) on the East End of Ojai. We peer into a lot of homes with elements of upcycling and artisanship. This one hit me like a kick to the liver. Its intricate details and perfect balance of (her) art and (his) craftsmanship are the result of decades of obsessive work, on what Bill described as a “shoestring budget.” You want to talk recycling? Here’s a guy who carves spoons out of leftover wood shavings so as not to waste a twig. Unfortunately, he wasn’t around for our photo shoot. Bill was off fly fishing in Colorado, casting with rods he makes by hand using techniques that have changed little since the mid-1800s. Again I’m impressed. And again I’m thankful for the opportunity to intermingle with dedicated characters like this—people who show that you can have money to burn, but after you’ve bought and consumed, collected, donated, and vacationed yourself into a sunbaked stupor, you’re nothing without a passion to pursue. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

5 FOR THE LOVE OF ART FOCUS ON THE MASTERS’ 20TH ANNIVERSARY GALA On September 19, 2014, some 200 people gathered at the Wyndham Garden Pierpont Inn to show their support for Focus on the Masters (FOTM) Archive and Library and the nonprofit’s community-oriented arts education programs. Celebrating 20 years of FOTM, the gala kicked off a yearlong fundraising effort to expand staff and programing.

6

The FOTM Archive contains information on more than 2,000 artists and arts organizations. Learning To See, an award-winning program for school children, integrates the life stories of significant local artists with the curriculum. Eight to 10 outstanding artists are singled out each year for the title of Master Artist, in recognition not only of their artistic accomplishments, but also for their role in the community. The public is invited to attend Artist Spotlight, a series of monthly artist interviews conducted by founder and executive director Donna Granata. For more information, visit focusonthemasters.com. FAB FIVE So you think you know everything there is to know about the Beatles? Think again. Ventura County writer Ivor Davis’s recent book, “The Beatles and Me On Tour,” chronicles the inside story of the group’s pandemonium-inducing first tour of America, a half-century ago. 1. I CALL YOUR NAME The Beatles were angry with Cassius Clay (soon to become Muhammad Ali). In February 1964, in Miami, they went to a gym expecting to have their picture taken with heavyweight champ Sonny Liston. “I don’t want my picture taken with those sissies,” snarled Liston. So instead, they were conned by photographer Harry Benson into climbing into the ring with Clay—then considered a no-hope challenger. “He made fools of us,” said John after the relatively little-known boxer clowned them in his inimitable style. Clay then went on to win the heavyweight crown and change his name to Muhammad Ali. 2. ALL TOGETHER NOW The Beatles adored Elvis, and I trooped along with them when they met the King in summer of l965. However, Elvis was jealous of the Beatles. They had knocked him off his top music perch. And worse: He hated grinding out three cookie-cutter movies a year. The Beatles’ first film, A Hard Day’s Night, was an instant smash. At that first meeting, it took 30 minutes for them to warm up to each other. Finally, Elvis jumped up, “I’m going to bed … I thought you guys came to jam.” That broke the ice, and Elvis and the Beatles began an impromptu jam session in his Beverly Hills living room. But several years later the Beatles

Davis, then a young reporter for the London Daily Express, had unrestricted access to the boys from Liverpool for 35 wild days and nights. Here are five fabulous anecdotes from a tour that made rock ‘n’ roll history.

felt betrayed by Elvis. In trying to cozy up to President Richard Nixon, Elvis went to the White House and badmouthed the Fab Four. “The Beatles laid the groundwork for many of the problems we are having with young people today,” he said, referencing their “unkempt appearances and suggestive music.” (A strange comment from the hip-swiveling Elvis.) 3. ANOTHER GIRL Bob Dylan was dating Joan Baez when he met the Beatles and introduced them to high-grade marijuana in a motel outside J.F.K. Airport the night before the Beatles flew home following their triumphant American tour in September l964. But he also warned John to keep his hands off Joan. John fancied her a lot, and she liked him because both were passionate about their opposition to the Vietnam War. John was married to wife Cynthia at the time, but that didn’t stop him from playing the field. 4. YOU WON’T SEE ME The Beatles were wary of show business celebs who wanted to exploit the Beatlemania frenzy. Jayne Mansfield enticed them to a Sunset Strip nightclub, but the evening turned into disaster after a sozzled George Harrison tossed his drink at a photographer who refused to stop taking pictures. The drink missed the lensman, instead dousing movie sex symbol Mamie Van Doren, who was

sitting nearby. 5. DO YOU WANT TO KNOW A SECRET John Lennon would call me to come to his suite to play Monopoly at 2:00 in the morning—and if the roll of the dice didn’t land him on the property he wanted, he cheated. He also played poker for money, losing quite a bit to photographer Curt Gunther and me. For more information about “The Beatles and Me On Tour,” or to buy the book, log on to ivordavisbeatles.com. NE OF THE JOYS OF THE ANNUAL OJAI STUDIO Artists tour every October is not only meeting the artists and viewing their work in their studios, but also peeking into some of their homes. Many of them are exceptional, like Bill and Sherry Loehr’s remodeled abode down an olive tree-lined driveway on the East End. Sherry is a fine artist featured on the tour, but just as enjoyable as her art and her painting studio is the fine wood craftsmanship on display courtesy of her husband, Bill, who more than likely will be pouring lemonade and offering cookies to guests. If you look closely at Sherry Loehr’s luminous,

detailed paintings, they are peaceful, meditative, and skillfully created, but each one has a deeper story to tell. They are solid yet dreamy, Asiatic in feeling with a Western sensibility. It is obvious that the artist loves birds and fish, and nature in general. And that she is not afraid of color. But there is something more. There are clues and nods to art history in her still life “fruit temples” that also include references as wide ranging as Botero to Japanese woodblocks. In fact, there’s an Asian/Craftsman sensibility in the couple’s home as well. Luminous and meticulous come to mind regarding their respective crafts. Sherry spends OCTOBER 2014

hours setting up and photographing compositions that “freeze reality,” because she admits she can’t paint fast enough to capture the piece of fruit or the flower before it decomposes. Sherry is a California native who grew up in San Francisco; Bill hails from Connecticut. The couple met in a jewelry making class in 1976 in Colorado. He was teaching at the University of Denver in the Graduate School of International Studies, and Sherry was teaching art to middle school kids. She had been an undergraduate at the University of Colorado, studying English literature. After college, she went to New York City where she worked in the editorial department of Seventeen magazine. Then, she got her MA in art education at Columbia and began teaching in Colorado. “We moved to California in 1985,” Sherry said, “I wanted to play tennis year-round and set up a ceramics studio. Bill consulted in economics. He is fluent in Spanish, from a stint in the Peace Corps in Chile. … He could, at the time, essentially live anywhere, so we picked California.” On a trip to Santa Barbara, they took a detour along the back road through Ojai. A realty office listing of an East End house with a spot for an art studio caught their eye. They didn’t purchase that property, but bought a fixer-upper near by. “We lived in that house until 1995, then moved to where we are now. The lot was twice the size, and remodeling the house seemed like it might be an interesting project.” Sherry recalled. The stone and wood house, built in 1954, had a lot of character. A massive stone fireplace was the only source of heat. Wooden beams had been salvaged from a pier that was being rebuilt in Santa Barbara. Screened-in porches and “nice, big trees” added to the appeal. However, the couple thought, “Heating might be nice!” And so the redesign began. “We both fooled around with the plans,” Sherry said. “I used my imagination, and Bill added the more practical aspects. He grew up on a farm, so he understands plumbing and electrical. He did a good deal of construction work while putting himself through school.” The couple built an addition that included a master bedroom and bath on the ground floor and Sherry’s upstairs studio space, which provides tranquil treetop views across the valley. Bill has an office with a stone fireplace, accessible solely by an outside stone stairway. They labored together on the house, with Sherry’s admitted main contribution being

“enthusiasm and patience,” while Bill did the physical work. The original house was paneled in Honduran and Philippine mahogany, which was beautiful but made for a dark interior. Bill removed all the wood, replaced it with drywall, and then tore apart the existing kitchen, converting it into a library. “He then took all that beautiful wood, planed it, and made bookshelves,” Sherry said. Bill also made all the cabinets in the house, did all tile work, made the front door and the patio furniture—and, oh yes, all the furniture except one piece, which Sherry inherited from her father. This was accomplished while the economist was still consulting and traveling to places like Kazakhstan, Lithuania, and Barbados. “That’s where the patience I mentioned before came into play,” laughed Sherry. “It took us 19 years to complete, and there are still things we have not quite finished!” Now that the two-bedroom, three-bath house is “almost finished,” Bill has turned his attention to making beautiful bamboo fly fishing rods. In fact, he was at their second home, in Durango, Colorado, “catch-and-releasing” when we shot this story. But he promises to be home in time to greet visitors on the stone patio, beside a tranquil koi pond, and pour fresh-squeezed Ojai lemonade. v

Is Your Back Pain Keeping You From The Life You Really Want? Seize Your Opportunity Now to FREE Yourself From The Chains Of Back Pain Before It’s Too Late. It’s time you took a step back and looked at your life, and what really matters the most. Looking back over the years, you know how fast time can fly. One minute you’re feeling strong, young and pain free...ready to take on the world. Then in what seems like no time at all, you’re unable to do the activities you love because of your back pain.

My name is Dr. Steve Alff, D.C. and I understand what it feels like to live in pain, because I see it every day. I’ve seen hundreds of people with disc herniations, back pain and sciatica -patients who were once told surgery was the only option --leave my office pain free. You see, I became a doctor to help people get well. I’ve always been driven to find natural ways of helping people heal their bodies, before trying drugs or surgery. As part of that purpose, I’ve acquired state-of-the-art technology to help local residents like you finally get rid of your pain.

Do You Have Any of These Conditions? • Herniated Discs • Bulging Discs • Degenerative Disc Disease • Severe Back Pain • Sciatica • Surgical Relapse • Facet Syndromes If so, this may be the solution. Read this article for more information.

But what if you could play golf again, travel and walk long distances without any pain? There is a treatment called spinal decompression that is likely to help you get rid of your problem once and for all. I’m willing to give you a $49.00 exam, with x-rays if needed -- both of which are normally priced at $197 -- to find out if this will work for you. If you’re not sure about spinal decompression, here are...

3 Reasons You Should Try It Now: First.... You May Avoid Back Surgery. One of the most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is back surgery. Of course the issues that can arise with back surgery are numerous, including a long recovery, complete fusion of your joints, and lost income from missing work. Before going ‘under the knife’, you should seriously consider a less invasive approach like spinal decompression. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a technology that has been shown to help disc herniations. Second...This Is Non-surgical and Drugless. Non-surgical spinal decompression is a technology that has been shown to reverse disc herniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing. Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once and awhile I even catch a patient sleeping during sessions. You’ll simply lie on your back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area – then the advanced decompression computer system will do the rest. Most patients feel better with just a few treatments, and best of all there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises. Third... An Excellent Success Rate. “I was suffering with low back pain for about 10 weeks and couldn’t even walk. My medical doctor told me I probably would have to have a spinal fusion and after hearing about spinal decompression, I thought I better try this first! After completing the treatment and doing everything Dr. Alff told me to do, my pain is gone. Having spinal decompression was the best decision I have ever made for myself!” -Terry T., Camarillo “I had suffered for 2 years with back pain! I knew I did not want to have surgery, so I consulted with Dr. Alff, After completing a series of treatments of spinal decompression with Dr. Alff, I feel much better because my back is not now hurting!” -Dave L., Camarillo As you can see, this treatment has a high success rate. What this means for you is that in just a matter of weeks, you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. This special offer will expire on October 31, so call now and speak to Christine at the front desk. Tell her you want to come in for the special back pain offer in this ad.

LIFE’S TOO SHORT TO LIVE IN PAIN LIKE THIS. CALL 805-626-0424 NOW AND FIND OUT IF SPINAL DECOMPRESSION IS YOUR RELIEF FOR YOUR BACK PAIN.

CALL OF THE TROPICS

From Midtown to Downtown, Tiki culture is ablaze in Ventura—and it’s not just a string thing. BY LISA SNIDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN IT’S BEEN A BANNER YEAR FOR MIDTOWN VENTURA’S Anacapa Ukulele. In February, Brad Ranola and his partners opened a second ukulele shop, in Los Angeles. In June they hosted the first L.A. Ukulele Expo, and now they are looking to expand the Ventura shop they first opened as a leap of faith three years ago. The countless YouTube views of ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro shredding the cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” could be a big reason for their success. And who can forget Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s timeless but fairly recent “Somewhere over the Rainbow”? Ukulele music has come a long way since Don Ho’s “Tiny Bubbles.” The modern ukulele movement has indeed piqued the interest of a new generation of would-be players. But Ranola insists the instrument’s broad appeal is due to its size and ease of use.

“Four strings, four fingers is a lot easier than six strings, four fingers; and the nylon strings are easier on your hands,” Ranola says. Along with a smaller, more portable size and the ergonomic benefits, the ukulele is also more affordable. And affordability doesn’t necessarily mean a compromise. As Ranola puts it, “A cheap ukulele sounds better than a cheap guitar.” A professional international musician for the last 18 years, Ranola got bit by the ukulele bug five years ago, but in order to get ahold of the instrument he wanted, he had to call a friend in Hawaii. He soon realized this was a niche that needed to be filled. “I really wanted to become proficient at this instrument, and what better way than to open my own shop?” Ranola says with a chuckle. It was also an opportunity for him to get off the road as a traveling musician and focus on his family. “I can still fulfill my love for music but be home more.” With a mid-century vintage Hawaiian vibe, the Ventura shop’s design is meant to encourage hands-on interactivity with the instruments they have for sale. It’s this play-before-you-pay philosophy that draws customers in. “Part of the reason why we opened, is you want to feel the instrument,” Ranola says. “It inspires you to want to play and get better. It’s more of an experience. It’s a place where people can play.” Among the more unique ukuleles they sell are the bongolele, the banjolele, and a surfy ‘50s-era ukulele with an enormous headstock— to stick in the sand like a surfboard. They’ve also got an iconic triangle-shaped treholipee, “a fun kitschy instrument” that Ranola says would be perfect at a place like VenTiki Lounge. While co-teaching a ukulele class at Disney Concert Hall with Grammy Award-winning Hawaiian musician Daniel Ho, Ranola shared what he and his partner Cary Hitsman had done at Anacapa Ukulele. Ho suggested a partnership with himself, blues ukulele master Jason Arimoto, and the Japanese American Cultural Community Center in Los Angeles. Within a year, U-Space opened their ukulele retail shop, ukulele school, and café in the heart of L.A.’s Little Tokyo. In addition, the partners dedicate a lot of their time to non-profit outreach, providing instruments and instruction to underprivileged youth in the community. The instrument’s appeal to all ages is what’s RIGHT: Co-owner Brad Ranola’s personal Kanile’a Tenor, with koa body, rosewood fret board, and abalone inlay representing the Hawaiian Islands.

VENTIKI LOUNGE & LANAI

D VenTiki Lounge & Lanai

espite its downtown location, you’re sure to feel like a castaway at VenTiki Lounge & Lanai. With its piped-in ukulele music and occasional orchestrated volcanic eruption, you can almost hear ripe coconuts falling to the ground. Cocktails are taken seriously here—you won’t find a drop of pineapple juice in the Mai Tai, which is made the proper way, right down to the hand-smacked mint leaves called for in the original recipe created by Trader Vic’s in Oakland in the 1930s. “In the tiki community, we believe in traditional garnishes to accentuate the drink,” says Dr. Shocker, VenTiki’s manager and self-proclaimed evangelist preaching the gospel of tiki. The first tiki movement came about when World War II soldiers returned home from the Bartender Crystal Cramer conjures up a round of blood-red Mai Tais. Pacific, but became a fad in the ‘70s when original drink recipes were lost and adulterated. “The ‘70s were the dark days of cocktails,” explains Dr. Shocker. “These drinks are part of the craft cocktail movement and made the correct way: light and refreshing and balanced, not sickeningly sweet.” Since opening 15 months ago, the quirky little bar has become a popular locals’ hangout, and a regular stop for Ventura Food Tours. Drinks made with myriad ingredients are served in intricate tiki mugs and sometimes set ablaze. “The Alter of Sacrifice—it just screams it needs fire.” Made with lime vodka, two kinds of bitters, and spiced vanilla syrup, it certainly does.

ZOMBIE With Halloween approaching, a favorite seasonal cocktail is the Zombie, which was invented in the ‘30s by Don the Beachcomber. Ingredients: ¾ ounce lime juice ½ ounce grapefruit 1 ½ ounce pineapple muice ¼ ounce falernum liqueur 1 ¼ ounce gold rum 1 ounce dark rum 1 ounce Lemon Hart 151 rum ½ ounce grenadine 2 dashes Angostura bitters 6 drops Pernod Combine all ingredients in a shaker and pour into glass. proven to be particularly exciting for Ranola and his partners. “It’s a real communal instrument,” he says. “The ukulele is the great equalizer; there’s no ego. It’s a great instrument that can reach lots of demographics.” Classes offered at both the Ventura and the Los Angeles locations attract all ages, from kids to seniors. “The kids play a lot of pop music, the older ones play early jazz, and obviously there’s a lot of Hawaiian music. We teach a lot of classical, reggae, and island music, too.” Growing in popularity is the kanikapila—a sort of ukulele circle/ jam session. Anacapa’s website lists several locations throughout Ventura County offering weekly gatherings. Ranola sees the company expanding in Ventura in much the same way U-Space did in Los Angeles. He’s hoping to soon add a café featuring local pour-over coffee and prepared sandwiches and pastries. “Coffee and ukulele go hand-in-hand,” Ranola says with a hopeful smile. He could be on to something. The world could certainly use more coffee klatches and impromptu kanikapilas. v

MODERN FUZION

In the hills of Somis, an artful take on East meets West. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL

‘‘I

’VE LOVED EVERY KIND OF GLASS THERE IS,” Frances Elson states, explaining her nine-year relationship with the medium. And it shows. Every room in her house gleams with the colors of the rainbow captured on bowls, sculptures, vases, light fixtures, even pictures—all made from fused glass. Elson crafted these pieces herself, and there are enough to fill a museum, which her beautiful hilltop home in Somis somewhat resembles: open, modern, well lit, smartly composed. It’s a pleasure to walk from room to room taking in the sights, including expansive views of Moorpark, Port Hueneme, and the Pacific Ocean. In addition to Elson’s glass art, there are ceramic sculptures by Maggie Kildee, portraits by Daggi Wallace, watercolors by Norman Kirk, a BiJian Fan paper sculpture… Elson’s personal collection is a veritable “Who’s Who” of local artists, and a testament to her longstanding ties with the Ventura County art community. One word you might use to describe Elson’s work is “solid.” Those platters and pasta bowls might seem as precious as Chihuly collectibles, but they are food-safe, durable, and meant to be used. Her fine art pieces display that same robust quality. Made by fusing pieces of glass and glass powder together in numerous layers, her landscapes and portraits OCTOBER 2014

have a depth and multidimensionality that you just can’t capture with paint. Elson also leaves the edges exposed so you can see the layers. It’s an interesting way of bringing the viewer into her creative process. Inspiration comes from a variety of places. Many of her landscapes are based on photographs taken on her various travels to India, Japan, and Eastern Europe. A series of ethnic portraits reveal a fascination with different cultures. “I like costumes and jewelry,” she admits. In a series paying homage to Picasso, one can see how his Cubist style and vivid colors match up well with Elson’s own aesthetic. Elson’s more domestic side surfaces with her vast collection of housewares: “I do love beautiful things for the home.” It’s a trait she shared with her late mother, Rose, who sewed, knitted, and embroidered with great skill. “She liked pretty things around her,” Elson recalls. “I think there was a creative spark there.” Elson’s family plays a substantial role in her life, not least because it was so fraught with upheaval. Her parents, Joseph and Rose Horowitz, both Polish Jews, spent most of the late 1930s and early 1940s on the run from the Nazis, and found themselves living in Kazakhstan when Frances was born in 1944. The Horowitz family spent two years in a Siberian camp for displaced persons while they awaited sponsorship for emigration to North America, which finally came through in 1948. Elson grew up in London, Ontario, and studied math and physics at the University of Western Ontario. She

met her husband, Ed, while he was in medical school, and the couple moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan for Ed’s residency after they were married. Elson’s original aspirations were to be an architect, but the architecture school in Ann Arbor wouldn’t recognize her Canadian undergraduate degree. She pursued a master’s degree in social work instead, working first as a clinical therapist and later as an administrator and teacher. When she moved to Ventura so Ed could open a dialysis center in the area, she continued to pursue social work until her love of architecture and design won out. “I worked in some furniture stores for free just to learn the ropes,” Elson recalls. “I learned [interior design] from the ground up.” She enjoyed great success with Gold Coast Design Center, the interior design studio she opened in 1975. Elson also explored the local art scene, where she got to know many emerging painters, sculptors, and other creative types, and even hosted art shows. Carlisle Cooper and Hiroko Yoshimoto are just two of the artists who enjoyed gallery space at Gold Coast. Elson became involved with the nascent nonprofit Casa Pacifica when she was hired to do the interiors for its Camarillo campus. “By the time they built it, I was hooked, so I stayed on as a volunteer,” she says. For many years she volunteered full-time, serving on the board (as president at one point), chairing the nonprofit’s events, and establishing the Yummies Culinary Competition. She and Ed, who share a passion for A private gallery showcases some of Fran Elson’s work, including pieces from the “Homage to Picasso” collection, works from the “Cosmos” series, bowls, vessels, and an etched glass coffee table.

the performing arts, have supported the Rubicon Theatre, Ventura Music Festival, and New West Symphony for some time. It took 30 years for Elson to move from connoisseur to creator, but when the calling came, there was no turning back. “I took a four-day class [at Pacific Art Glass in Los Angeles],” she recalls. “At the end of the class, I closed my business.” If she had any doubts about her sudden career change, they didn’t get in the way. In 1995, the Elsons purchased 22.5 acres of land in Somis, giving Frances a blank canvas on which her architectural imagination could take flight. Using Frank Lloyd Wright and Asian design as inspiration, she set about planning her dream home: a 5,000-square-foot modern masterpiece that sits nearly hidden among groves of lemons and avocados (the Elsons lease 17 acres to farmers) and boasts views that, on a clear day, extend to the Channel Islands. Wall-sized glass lets them take in these wonders from three sides of the

house. The entrance, with its guardian Fu Dogs and a yard landscaped to resemble a Japanese dry garden, clearly reflect Asian influences. Despite its considerable size, the house has just three bedrooms. “There are very few walls,” Elson explains. “The biggest luxury is that we can have big, open spaces, tall rooms, and lots of glass. Functionality is critical—there isn’t a room we don’t use. It’s livable, low maintenance, with amazing views.” Vista del Mar Ranch, as Elson calls her home, is a culmination of the artist’s life, which encompasses her love of art, architecture, family, travel, and a sheer appreciation for the area’s natural beauty. “We really got to build the house the way we want to live,” Elson sums up. It’s a way many of us might want to live too. v

The dining room includes a sculpture by local artist Maggie Kildee (back left), a pair of fine raku pots, and (on the wall above the cantilevered buffet) an oil by Israeli painter Yankel Ginsburg. In the kitchen, a 5-panel piece called “Spectral Harmony” awaits installation.
