EDITOR’S NOTE

FARM TO GABLE

P

UBLICITY HOUNDS RARELY CHOOSE Ventura as their home, so it came as no great surprise when the owner of the mod glass house on our cover elected to remain anonymous. All we know about her is that she’s a she—and, apparently, she’s a sheer delight: “loving, caring, and philanthropic,” according to designer Philip Nimmo, who we enlisted to riff on a selection of photos showcasing the stylish abode (p. 46). A relatively dim spotlight is part of the draw for many intriguing characters who call our county seat home. This is a place where celebrities can roam freely among the common herd, often without being noticed, much less ogled. They can breeze up and down the 101—meetings in L.A., dinner in Santa Barbara— then return to the quietude of their nest in humble Ventura. This unassuming vibe is one of our county’s finest assets. Or so I believe. Yet we’d relegated that article to the no-cigar pile. Thing is, we rarely green-light pieces that don’t include some flesh and blood. But this thoughtfully designed hillside home with an incognito owner hooked us. Beyond the Imaxworthy view, it’s a supremely livable dwelling, with no shortage of panache to set it apart. So in this case, we made the structure itself the star of the article, supporting it with Nimmo’s firsthand descriptions and a strikingly clean layout to match its contemporary style. In a perfect world, we’d have co-spotlighted the home and its owner. But ideal rarely happens. Which made working on an article about the solar-powered dwelling of Chris Frederic (p. 11) such a joy. This is the archetype of a Ventana story, an editorial dream scenario where a local resident worked with a local designer to build a captivating and thoroughly cool local home. The creative process led to a lasting friendship between Frederic and architect CJ Paone, as the two became so wrapped up in the task it evolved into something of an art project, a true labor

of love. In this home, the confluence of passion and practicality, of ideology and art occurred so naturally that the all-too-common owner/architect drama of many homebuilding projects wasn’t even a thought. These two gamboled through the process, brainstorming for half a year before even rolling up their sleeves to really get started. As for the other half of our Home + Garden theme, we showcase a conversation with local permaculturist Eric Werbalowski (p. 17). Eric and his partner in life and business, Kristen Kiki Marozzi, have a largely self-sufficient garden at their home in West Ventura. It’s an admirable setup, with salads growing on the kitchen patio, chickens clucking about turning and fertilizing the soil, and jars brimming with homegrown and homemade relishes, jams, and pickles. To me, this sort of back-to-the-land culture is about more than good eating or eco-idealism; it represents joie de vivre. A few months back, I read an article about a tech entrepreneur who compiled a list of 35 nutrients required for survival, ordered them online—mostly in pill or powder form—and blended them into something resembling “gooey lemonade.” He then proceeded to live on this chemical salmagundi. At the end of a year, he was, according to him and the article, looking and feeling great—all thanks to the functional-but-no-fun concoction he named Soylent. Now, as the parent of two young kids (Hot dogs! Pizza! Ice cream!), I’m drawn to the streamlined efficiency of this nutrient delivery system. But we live in one of the principal agricultural areas of a state that, on its own, would be the world’s ninth-largest agricultural economy. Even if we don’t have the time or drive to fully embrace the farm-to-table ethos, we’re lucky to live close to the source. And that’s something to be joyful about. – Matt Katz mattk@ventanamonthly.com

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN One’s an architect, the other a retired solar consultant. Together this forward-thinking duo transformed a modest Midtown house into a celestial retreat.

Natural light and sea breezes flood an open-plan living room with Spanish details.

In 2009, retired solar consultant Chris Frederic purchased a half-remodeled, two-story, 2700-square-foot “California Faux Tuscan/Spanish style” house on a hill above Midtown Ventura. The only problem was that if Chris wanted a cup of coffee in the morning, he’d have to walk from his bedroom and climb the rickety outside stairs to get to his kitchen on the main floor. (Good thing for him we haven’t gotten much rain in recent years.) With an eye toward connecting the upstairs and downstairs—without having to go outside— he began collaborating with Ventura architect CJ Paone of Archipelago Workshop. There were other design goals as well. “All I wanted was a view,” the Southern California native said. And with elements like clear glass railings, the collaborative design project would soon render the sort of views most people only dream about. Connected through “friends of friends,” the architect and the homeowner hit it off right away, and their fruitful collaboration led to a relationship that remains strong. But stylistically, the project began with a dilemma: It was a Spanish-style house owned by a man who leaned towards modern design. “To balance those two was a challenge,” said Paone, explaining that the outward appearance of the modest one-story belies the “wow” factor found inside. “We think architecture, design, and building things are all super fun. We want our clients to play along.” And play they did. Frederic and Paone brainstormed together during a six-month incubation period. “It was a real nice cyclical process,” noted the architect. “We weren’t rushing through the project. Chris really valued the process of getting it right.” Their goals were simple in theory: To bring modern elements to the Mediterranean flavor of the structure and have them meld seamlessly. Mission accomplished, but it would be false to claim the task at hand was easy in practice. It’s about those stairs. Stairs have to meet certain requirements so a person can ascend or descend safely and gracefully. These ones couldn’t take up too much floor space; their design needed to flow with the design of the remodel and existing structure; and they ended up being exceedingly difficult to construct. What the architect conjured are graceful, lyrical, and solidly built stairs of white oak with a simple, sinuous but effective hand-forged rail that has echoes of the great Spanish architect Gaudi, without the frills. Which makes perfect sense since the rest of the house has a Spanish-Mediterranean flavor. “Once we got rolling on the stairs,” said the owner, acknowledging this was one of the most difficult aspects of the project, “we forged ahead and tore everything open.” The upstairs had one small window and French doors

that offered no indication of a stunning 180-degree vista from Point Mugu to Surfers Point. Wall-length folding doors replaced the original small windows and doors facing the view; downstairs, the original frosted glass doors were repurposed as pocket doors dividing the master bedroom and the music room. The owner handcrafted many of his home’s furnishings: the lowlying Zen-like bed frame, bookshelves of walnut and copper, and a couch in the music room. As CJ put it, “The house really exemplifies the values and benefits of living in our beach town—local craftsmen, a surplus of solar energy generated by the PV panels, indoor/outdoor living, amazing views, and an owner who values quality and design.” In the end—after sketching, tinkering, and following nature’s lead—the duo’s vision came to fruition as an elegant abode that’s just what the owner wanted. “Never say never,” laughed Chris, “but I am never moving from here.” v TOP: Glass railings and a full-width folding door system make the most of views from Ventura Point to Point Mugu. Eric Werbalowsky and Kiki Marozzi harvest lima beans still growing from last year.

THE EDIBLE EDEN A West Ventura twosome shows how to grow one bountiful garden.

INTERVIEW BY LISA SNIDER PHOTOGRAPHY BY T CHRISTIAN GAPEN PERMACULTURE IS A REALLY BIG WORD FOR A remarkably simple concept. Ever since college, edible landscaper Eric Werbalowsky has been spreading the gospel of permaculture to anyone who will listen. A self-described compost evangelist, Werbalowsky has been both a consultant and an activist when it comes to creating landscapes that nourish both body and soul. Last month, he once again gave his time, energy, and design expertise at the Ventura County Fair, with his floriculture exhibit showcasing Ventura Growing Circles—a burgeoning organization that promotes neighborhood food growing and sharing—and he took home a few blue ribbons, too. When he is not busy with his day job consulting, he volunteers for Ventura County Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Gardens initiative, which promotes eco-friendly landscapes, and he spends time at the Bell Arts Factory mentoring young would-be gardeners through the Kids Garden Brigade.

So, what exactly is permaculture? Permaculture is about being in relationship with our environment, our community, our natural landscape, and our human-created landscape, and asks, “How do we use these systems with minimum input and run them as much as possible with sustainable resources?” You can design how you live so that it creates abundance instead of a burden. What prompted you to go into this field? When I was going to UCSB in the early ’80s, I took a course in food and ecosystems. I experienced this intense sense of “Oh, my God. What can I do?’ That’s when I began understanding what composting was. I learned to make humus. I learned to grow food. It was so simple and so basic, and it was part of a solution. It really felt positive. We’re in a drought. How does permaculture address that? Everybody is sticking their straw in the ground and taking, taking, taking. Permaculture addresses that and says putting running water down the drain isn’t where it’s at. With increased drought awareness and rising water rates, customers are asking for water-wise landscape renovations—replacing turf with mulches, installing laundry-tolandscape greywater systems and adding interesting motifs like dry creek beds with climate appropriate plants, especially California natives. Taking care of existing fruit trees, adding new ones, and making compact food beds are often an integral part of this work, too. As an edible landscaper, it's a little embarrassing to admit, but my new favorite garden features are well-placed rocks. I especially like the way they provide rhythm and strong texture to any landscape. We usually complement rockery with accent plants to take advantage of the microclimate benefits they can provide. Would you say permaculture takes a lot of work and money, or is it good for those of us who tend to be lazy and frugal? Permaculture design takes more thought than work or money. In fact, the basics of permaculture involve placing design elements so that

18

|

ventana

|

SEPTEMBER 2014

as they grow and become more established, less work and inputs, including water, are required. It may seem esoteric at first, but when we can create a design that uses a site's natural energies of wind, sun, rain, animals, and plants, we can mimic the way natural systems become richer, more complex, and more productive over time, like a forest. What’s unique about our area as it pertains to permaculture? We have a number of climate zones in Ventura

County. I can grow lettuce year-round, but a couple miles inland, no way, unless that climate is moderated in some way. Because we are in a Mediterranean climate, which is mild yearround, we can grow most things. If you like food, this is an amazing place to be. How can a first-time gardener get started at home using permaculture without being intimidated? Start really, really small and really close. There

is an axiom that says you will eat whatever is closest to your kitchen door. Put a small garden right there in the ground or in a box. I have a small grow battery and I’ve been eating salads out of a little box on my patio. When we’re eating dinner late, I don’t have to put on a headlamp and go out back. It’s so easy to start small because it won’t be overwhelming. It’s also a great way to avoid some of the common pitfalls of gardening. What makes permaculture such a valuable tool is that it is always a product of specific local observation, followed by a design to create a result or “yield.” Permaculture design always employs a strategy—even the simple idea of placing garden beds or planters close to areas that get a lot of attention, like along our walkways and near the kitchen door. Despite the relative luxury of home garden space on our hillside, I often harvest herbs and greens from my grow batteries just like a condo balcony gardener because they are visible from my kitchen window, and so easy to access when making meals. What vegetables are you most excited about harvesting from your garden this fall, and what is your favorite way to prepare them? My partner, Kiki, has been working more traditional crops into our gardens, like beans for drying and corn for making masa. It does simplify harvesting to not have to guess at ripeness because we let these crops fully dry on the vine or stalk before harvest. I haven't really been into dry bean cuisine before, but I really appreciate the noticeable flavor complexities and sweetness of our Cherokee and Black Turtle beans. We will ferment the corn in preparation for creating the masa meal. It is a lot more work than eating fresh corn, but it is a delicious upgrade on most commercial masa and tortillas. Do you have any seasonal tips for at-home gardeners this fall? Yes, make your beds! After a long spring/summer season it is easy to cut and run—to just leave/ignore faded mulches and crop stalks. It doesn't take a lot of extra effort to lay on a thick mulch of rough compost, dried grasses, or wood fines. It will protect the organic matter in your topsoil from both the sun and rain. Ideally, all dirt, even in pathways, will be covered under a mulch blanket of at least six inches. By using finer materials that break down more quickly than larger wood chips, it will also add nutrients while the garden bed awaits its next use, whether that’s food, flowers, a cover crop, or left fallow. v VENTURA ORGANIC GARDENS venturaorganicgardendesign.com, 805. 652.1142 MORE PERMACULTURE INFO permacultureprinciples.com

Oil and mixed media paintings by owner/artist Kelly Luscombe Bea hang on an original 19th-century hand-hewn beadboard wall.

THE ART OF IMPERFECTION An 1889 Victorian on Ojai’s East End gets an eclectic update. BY NANCY D. LACKEY SHAFFER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GASZTON GAL

A bookshelf brims with family photos, vintage boxes, coral sculptures, and various other objets d’art.

THERE’S A WARMTH THAT EMANATES FROM KELLY LUSCOMBE Bea’s home, and it’s not just from Ojai’s summer swelter. She greets me on the porch with a smile and a hug as she ushers me into her 1889 Victorian. From the get-go there’s a sense of welcome. The front room, a dark and intimate space, is rich with wood paneling and an enormous stone fireplace—both original to the house and testament to its late-19th-century heritage. But instead of the ceramics, clockworks, and portraits indicative of the era, colorful paintings, quirky sculptures, and saris are artfully sprinkled throughout, adding a palpable sense of levity. This mix of vintage charm and modern art is very much a manifestation of the homeowner. “I don’t want to focus on perfection,” Luscombe Bea tells me over cups of tea with ginger. “I just want to bring the magic in.” That magic comes from many places. Her mother (Suzanne von Drachenfels, author of the etiquette classic The Art of the Table) recently down-

sized, leaving Luscombe Bea with a treasure trove of furnishings, china, and other collectibles. Several black-and-white photographs taken by her father, who studied with Ansel Adams, are displayed on the wall. Mementos from her travels to India and Spain are in evidence along with the art of several friends, many of whom have shown at her Meiners Oaks space, Gallery 525. Her own artwork is prominently featured as well, including metal sculptures, mosaics, surreal paintings, and small tableaux hidden behind dollhouse shutters that she calls “window poems.” Colorful renderings of Christian saints and Hindu deities are a recurring motif. “I practice Bhakti yoga, or ‘yoga of the heart,’” Luscombe Bea explains. “But I’m also inspired by the lives of saints.” As a student in San Francisco, she initially studied both art and interior design. “I thought I had to be practical, so I went into interior design,” Luscombe Bea says. “But what I really wanted was to be an artist.” Decorating paid the bills while she continued to pursue her passion, and she eventually made a living as an artist and teacher, opening up a successful gallery in 1997. She moved to Ojai in 2001 to get away from the fog, and fell in love with the four-bedroom, two-bath fixer-upper on the East End. “It was pretty run-down,” she admits. Old carpet was everywhere, layers of vinyl covered the kitchen floor, and there was rotting plaster on the walls. But it also boasted a large lot with a cool shed, guesthouse, saltwater swimming pool, an avocado orchard, and a spectacular view of the Topa Topa Mountains to the west. Original hardware, wainscoting, and stonework added to its allure. When she moved in, she knew she could handle any necessary remodels, but she made a conscious decision not to make it a faithful Victorian-era reconstruction. “I did a major remodel once on a Victorian in San Francisco,” Luscombe Bea recalls. “Perfection was the goal—and it was draining. Instead, I decided to make this house my own.” Carpet was torn out and the hardwood floors were refinished. Lavender, mint green, and butter yellow went up on the walls, and the built-in glass cupboards were filled with a merry mishmash of teacups, glassware, and random objets d’art. Touches of whimsy are everywhere, like the painted metal bikini out by the pool and a white feather wreath that bedecks her boudoir. Interior design may not have been Luscombe Bea’s true calling, but you can’t deny her eye: while chaos has a certain hold on every room, there’s also a sense of composition. Luscombe Bea doesn’t just have art everywhere; the tools to

|

SEPTEMBER 2014

create art are everywhere, too. Her bright blue porch (“Blue has become almost a neutral for me,” she says) features tables for sketching and a printing press. Near the pool is an outdoor studio space. “You can paint and then jump in the pool and come right back!” she exclaims with a laugh, What would have been the pool house in a more conventional setting has become a colorful artists’ shed, perfect for washing out paintbrushes. The peaceful, creativity-sparking nature of this studio en plain air has earned it the moniker Ananda Verandah (ananda is a Buddhist term for bliss), and it’s been a big draw for the workshops Luscombe Bea frequently offers: yoga retreats, art camps, exhibitions. Music performances are held in a large stage she constructed herself, complete with studio lighting. A musician as well as an artist, Luscombe Bea plays guitar and harmonium, and has been exploring classical Indian singing and kirtan. Friends frequently gather poolside, on comfy couches with a perfect view of the stage, for performances and jam sessions. “We play outside at night, and it’s totally divine,” she says. “This is my little paradise.” Thanks to an inventive use of space, guest accommodations are many and varied. The cold shed she converted to a one-bedroom studio with a loft, and tea houses furnished with beds, mosquito netting, and hammocks are cunningly hidden among the avocado and walnut groves. Students who come to the Ananda Verandah find themselves attempting to attain a certain freedom in their work, not “boxed in,” as Luscombe Bea says, by objects or a sense of order. It’s a struggle she tries to overcome in her own work. “I like to paint people and objects that have meaning; I like a little realism to pull me in,” she explains, gesturing to the dresses, dress forms, shoes, and hands that frequently show up as metaphors in her art. “But the objects are just the surface level. They pull you into something deeper. There’s a certain freedom when you’re painting that touches on the ecstatic. I want to help people unlock that creative part of themselves—it’s like unlocking the secrets of the universe.” Ananda Verandah’s many splendors inspire the imagination to take flight, but it’s Luscombe Bea’s affable nature and gracious spirit that sets the heart at ease, making more profound connections possible. “I feel that in my home I’m entertaining in a more modern way, and entertaining with art. It’s a different way of being hospitable.” v Learn more about Kelly Luscombe Bea, the Ananda Verandah and Gallery 525 at kellyluscombebea.com.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Peek into a modern wonderland in the hills of Ventura.

AS TOLD TO LESLIE A. WESTBROOK PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK JOHNSON

A

n interior designer by profession, Philip Nimmo is an artist at heart. Based in West Hollywood, he’s worked on projects around the globe but found his dream client right here in Ventura. “The world should have more people like her,” he says of the young homeowner, who prefers to remain out of the spotlight. “She is loving, caring, and philanthropic, an amazing girl.” Here, we step into the mod glass house Nimmo designed and built in our local hills—and let him paint the scene with his own words.

SEPTEMBER 2014

ROOFTOP TERRACE: “The rooftop terrace literally has a 360-degree view. It covers the entire top of the master bedroom. There are certain organic elements running throughout the house, so whenever I had the opportunity to use natural wood I embraced the idea. I happened to run across a teak slab at Berbere Imports, and I designed the base to go with it … This is a great, fun hangout place. The space presented itself to us and happened as we were designing the house. I travel to South America quite a bit and it’s like the miradors there, which are staircases to a rooftop terrace.”

KITCHEN: “I’m really proud of this kitchen—it’s completely indoor and outdoor. See the spheres? There’s a panel of glass; we have glass pocket doors that slide open. Structurally, it was a feat to figure out how to make it work, but we did it. The light fixture, from Hudson Lighting, is a metal frame with individual strands of chain. The lights are within the body of this ‘creature.’”

MASTER BEDROOM: “Once again, not a huge space. There’s a terrace above the master bedroom, so you see the staircase. There’s just the bed, a fireplace, and a chair with a side table (one of my designs). The candy red imitation crocodile headboard is my design, too. Above the bed is a painting commissioned from artist Rimi Yang; it’s taken from a photograph of Audrey Hepburn in a crowd of people. The client loves many of the stars from that period. Because it’s a small space, we wanted to get as much light in as possible. We were fortunate to have a balcony outside the bedroom, but rather than a seethrough railway we had to do a solid raining to ensure privacy.”

EXTERIOR: “What is really cool about this structure is that you can push a button and all the sliding doors automatically open. You don’t have to touch them. The window on the far right, next to the bronze bowl, also goes back into the wall, creating full indoor-outdoor living. The other thing that is cool: we have builtin heaters in the ceiling. You walk around the spa to get to the terrace that is above the master bedroom … The chaise material is from Perennials; it’s called Pebble, a cut velvet exterior fabric trimmed in burnt orange. Those are petrified wood side tables. The antique Burmese stone Buddha came from Lee Lacy Gallery. On the limestone wall, we put a large piece of marble as a backdrop for the Buddha.”

BATHROOM: “The client loves the color pink, so we found beautiful pink quartz for the tub enclosure (and shower, which you don’t see) that is all backlit. The cabinet is bamboo. The wallpaper is a beautiful treated raw silk from Phillip Jefferies that holds up really well. Because it’s solid glass, from the deck of the tub to the ceiling, the garden is really a part of the bathroom. It almost feels like a rain forest, with an Asian side garden with miniature bamboo. It’s completely private, but the fence, which complements the lines of the house, helped secure that privacy.”

SEPTEMBER 2014

LIVING ROOM: “When my client bought this house, it was a dilapidated, 1940s ranch-style house; if you huffed and puffed, you’d blow it down. We were very involved in the architectural design of the building. With all the zoning, and being a house on the hill, we had to follow the original footprint, so we reconstructed the layout. This is the great room, which includes the dining room and the kitchen to the side. The photograph reminded me a bit of ‘Alice In Wonderland’ – it’s a mushroom (purchased thru Holly Hunt), and it set the tone for the house. It’s not the largest space in the world, so we had to fit in as much as we could without being too tight. We wanted to create an open loft feeling … What we really liked: all the colors are natural and warm. The floor is Crema Marfil limestone, and we chose white walls, white ceiling, and light-colored floors so the cabinetry would pop.”

BLUE LIGHTNING 10.75 carat natural Blue Zircon. The mines that produce Zircons rarely produce gems above 6 carats that are fine quality. This is by far the nicest Blue Zircon I've seen in years. The mounting I've designed is an experiment in creating surfaces by merging discreet elements, rather than trying to just stretch and fold the surface. I've added scrolls to define the limits of the surface and to create a transition between the planes.
